Notes: The effect of electron cyclotron resonance plasma cleaning on the contact resistance between a superconducting Nb layer and a two-dimensional electron gas in a strained InxGa1−xAs/InP heterostructure is investigated. Cleaning by a He/H plasma results in a rough semiconductor surface and a high interface resistance. In contrast, by using a pure He plasma a smooth semiconductor surface with a considerably lower interface resistance is obtained. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A scanning laser acoustic microscope (SLAM) is described. The SLAM achieves a resolution of about 10 μm and is capable of imaging subsurface features at depths up to several millimeters, using appropriate reconstruction algorithms. The various components of the apparatus, both acousto-optical and electronic, are described. A major feature of the SLAM is a digital data-acquisition system capable of storing and processing the complex acoustic field in images with 256×256-pixel resolution. An array processor enables most floating-point operations to be completed in a few seconds. Examples of acoustic images obtained from a test sample are presented.

Notes: The potential of near-field photocurrent spectroscopy for direct imaging of mode profiles of submicron-sized waveguides in optoelectronic devices is demonstrated. The technique combines the submicron spatial resolution of near-field optics with tunable laser excitation, allowing for selective investigation of the waveguide properties of the device structure. Experiments on InGaAs/AlGaAs high-power laser diodes with different waveguide designs provide direct visualization of the effect of the waveguide design on (i) the number of guided modes and (ii) the spatial profile of both fundamental and higher-order modes. The technique thus provides a sensitive tool for nondestructive in situ analysis of waveguide properties in optoelectronic devices. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Far IR rotational transitions between the four lowest rotational levels in the X 3Σ− vibronic ground states of OH+ and OD+ have been observed by laser magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Ground state molecular constants, including the three g factors, have been determined and employed in the calculation of a Born–Oppenheimer equilibrium geometry. The centrifugal distortion of the spin-rotation interaction is found to have a significant effect on the determination of other molecular constants. Hyperfine splittings have been resolved and analyzed for OH+, but could not be observed in OD+ spectra with a 6 MHz collision-broadened linewidth.

Notes: Nine rotational transitions of v=0 X˜ 2B1 H2O+ have been measured by laser magnetic resonance. Optical combination differences have been combined with the LMR data in a weighted least-squares analysis using a Watson S-reduced rotational-fine structure Hamiltonian. Twenty-four molecular constants were simultaneously determined, including three hyperfine parameters and the axial components of both the anisotropic and rotational g tensors. The anisotropic g tensors are compared with their calculated values using the Curl relationship. An r0 structure was determined and is in good agreement with several ab initio results.

Notes: The sequence variation of three exons of the major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) was examined in a lake whitefish Coregonus sp., population from the Swiss lake of Hallwil. DNA sequences from the Mhc class I A1, A2 and class II B1 exons, corresponding to the α1, α2 and β1 domains of the Mhc glycoproteins, were obtained by the polymerase chain reaction followed by cloning and sequencing. The numbers of variable sequences detected for each exon were 15 (A1), 11 (A2) and 20 (B1). Levels of nucleotide similarity ranged from 82 to 99% for the A1 exon, 58–96% for the A2 and 88–99% for the B1 exon. At the A1 and B1 exons, the nonsynonymous substitution rates (dn) exceeded synonymous substitution rates (ds) greatly within the peptide binding regions, indicating the effect of balancing selection. Sequence diversity at the A2 exon did not seem to be maintained by balancing selection (ds 〉 dn). Phylogenetic comparison of whitefish Mhc sequences with sequences from other salmonid species and more distantly related teleosts indicated shared ancestral (trans-species) polymorphism.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract With AWPS (Amplitude Weighted Phase Structuration), a new signal processing scheme is demonstrated for the simultaneous determination of zeta potentials and particle sizes. It allows the measurements of a small electrophoretic mobility in the presence of large particle diffusion and constant velocity, e. g. due to thermal convection. Laser light scattering techniques instead of the former methods determine electrophoretic velocity more objectively and precisely. The applicability of laser measurement techniques by analysis of the frequency spectrum is limited for particles ≪50 nm or very low potentials, because of the broadening of the spectral peak by Brownian motion. In contrast to AWPS a separation of the various kinds of collective motion is not possible. The presented results demonstrate that this separation is of considerable significance in the acquisition of reliable values. Additionally the novel signal processing scheme allows a significant increase in sensitivity and therefore the application of an oscillating field (50–100 Hz) with a very small field strength. The system is feasible for particle sizes in the range of a few nm up to several μm. Its high resolution allows experiments with low fields or with small zeta potentials, even in the critical particles size range of a few nanometers.
