Notes: Abstract cDNA clones for the human Leydig insulin-like peptide (Ley I-L) have been isolated and characterized. The nucleotide sequence of the 743-bp cDNA includes an incomplete 7-bp 5′-noncoding region, an open reading frame of 393 bp, and a 343-bp 3′-noncoding region. By primer extension analysis, the transcription start site was determined as being 14-bp upstream of the translation start site. The underlying gene is expressed in the testis but not in other organs. From the cDNA sequence, it can be deduced that the Ley I-L protein is synthesized as a 131-amino-acid (aa) preproprotein and that it contains a 24-aa signal peptide. Comparison of the pro Ley I-L protein with members of the insulin-like hormone superfamily predicts that the biologically active hormone, after proteolytic processing of the C peptide, consists of a 31-aa long B chain and a 26-aa long A chain, and that it has a molecular weight of 6.25 kDa.

Notes: Abstract The expression of a human histone H1 isoform (H1.1) was studied in several human tissues. Northern blot analysis has revealed that this gene is expressed in testis and thymus, but not in other human tissues. In this report, we demonstrate that the expression of the histone H1.1 gene in human testis is restricted to early round spermatids that belong to the fraction of postmeiotic sperm cells. Transcripts hybridizing with the human H1.1 gene could not be detected in testis of mouse, rat, bull or boar. Southern blot analysis with human genomic DNA, DNA from different Old World monkeys (chimpanzee, orangutan, gorilla and rhesus monkey) and DNA from several mammalian species has revealed that the histone H1.1 gene is highly conserved in higher primates, whereas no cross-hybridization can be detected with DNA from other mammalian species such as mouse, rat, hamster or bull. In a previous report, the human histone H1.1 gene and other H1 genes (H1.2–H1.5, H1t) were assigned to chromosome 6 by polymerase chain reaction analysis using human-rodent cell hybrid DNA; fluorescence in situ hybridization indicated that these genes form part of a major gene cluster on the short arm of chromosome 6. We have confirmed the localization of histone H1.1 to chromosome 6 and have regionally assigned the locus to 6p21.3 by radioactive in situ hybridization.

Notes: Abstract Temperature resolved X-ray diffraction using a diffractometer equipped with a high temperature device was applied to the study of the oxidation of Fe-ARMCO below 570°C. The oxidation products are identified in situ and the difference method yields curvesY(T) showing the global changes. These curves were calibrated to the microscopically measured end thickness of the oxide layer obtaining the growthx(T). A calculated curve including the Arrhenius relation was fitted to thex(T) curve yielding activation energy and values of the oxidation rate constant as a function of temperature.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Trockene Ammoniumnitratproben (AN) mit einem Gehalt von 1, 3 bzw.
Notes: Abstract Dried samples of ammonium nitrate (AN) containing 1, 3, 5 mol% KNO3, RbNO3 and CsNO3 were investigated with temperature resolved X-ray diffraction. The samples were cycled with 2 temperature programs from −70° to 100° and −70° to 150°C, resp. DSC measurements were made for comparison. KNO3 extends the stability range of phase III. The supercooling observed with the transitions II/III and III/IV was so severe that the phases III and IV could be skipped leading to the transitions II/IV and III/V. No hindered nucleation was observed on heating. RbNO3 gives dried AN the properties of the humid nitrate. Phase III appeared on heating but was skipped on cooling, when the sample had been heated to 150°C. Hindered nucleation was observed. CsNO3 stabilizes the phases II and V. No strong hysteresis or supercooling was observed.

Notes: Abstract The oxide films formed on iron-chromium alloys in superheated steam have been investigated using a variety of microanalytical techniques, most notably electron energy loss spectroscopy. The addition of boron dopants leads to the rapid formation of a microcrystalline film of composition (Cr) x B 1}-x 2 O 3,which resists further oxidation. Analysis of the near-edge structures associated with each core-loss edge after different oxidation times allows us to postulate various mechanisms for the observed behavior.

Notes: Abstract Three examples for the application of time and temperature resolved X-ray diffraction for the investigation of solid state reactions and phase transitions are given. Samples were submitted to an isothermal temperature program or to stepwise heating/cooling, while diffraction patterns were measured continuously. The applications include the in situ identification of reaction products or phases, the determination of kinetic parameters, the observation of thermal expansion and the formation of layers.

Notes: Summary A fast X-ray diffraction method was applied in order to study in situ high temperature corrosion of steel surfaces. The measuring system for high temperature corrosion testing consists of an X-ray diffractometer, a high temperature device with programmable temperature controller and a Si(Li)-detector for measurements of energy dispersive diffraction spectra at temperatures from 20 to 1500°C. With a measuring time of 100 s per diffraction pattern a series of 300 measurements can be performed during one day. The atmosphere in the high temperature device can be controlled. The samples were heated in air at ambient pressure, recording X-ray diffraction spectra every 20°C. In addition, isothermal experiments were carried out at different temperatures. From the diffraction spectra the peak intensities, lattice plane distances and lattice parameters of the base material and the oxides were calculated as a function of temperature or time. The method allows an in situ identification of the corrosion products and a direct observation of phase transitions.

Notes: Summary The formation of α-Fe2O3 on Fe3O4 during the oxidation of iron below 570°C occurs very slowly and the scales are so thin that they cannot be detected by microscopy. X-ray diffraction with grazing incidence, equipped with a high temperature device, allows an ‘in situ’ study of the α-Fe2O3 formation even the initial reactions. The formation of α-Fe2O3 was studied in isothermal experiments at 400, 450, 500 and 550°C. α-Fe2O3 could already be detected at the beginning of the experiments. The difference method, a numerical treatment for kinetic evaluation, yields curves showing the growth of the α-Fe2O3 layer. Fitting the parabolic time law to these curves yields the rate constants.
