Notes: [Auszug] In 1997–98, the growth rate of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere doubled, reaching the highest on record. As even casual television viewers could have guessed, a contribution to the increase might have come from the wildfires occurring in Indonesia at that time, which burned for months and ...

Notes: [Auszug] Pressure to ban the hunting of foxes with hounds in Britain has fuelled debate about its contribution to the control of fox populations. We took advantage of a nationwide one-year ban on fox-hunting during the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in 2001 to examine this issue and found that ...

Notes: [Auszug] Baker replies Hoegh-Guldberg et al. suggest that corals that were transplanted downwards died more frequently than those transplanted upwards because they were deprived of critical sunlight energy at depth. My argument went a step further by explaining why this energy is ...

Notes: [Auszug] Through the development of a procedure to measure when hydrogen bonds form under two-state folding conditions, α-helices have been determined to form proportionally to denaturant-sensitive surface area buried in the transition state. Previous experiments assessing H/D isotope effects are ...

Description: Molecular genetic studies of Drosophila melanogaster have led to profound advances in understanding the regulation of development. Here we report gene expression patterns for nearly one-third of all Drosophila genes during a complete time course of development. Mutations that eliminate eye or germline tissue were used to further analyze tissue-specific gene expression programs. These studies define major characteristics of the transcriptional programs that underlie the life cycle, compare development in males and females, and show that large-scale gene expression data collected from whole animals can be used to identify genes expressed in particular tissues and organs or genes involved in specific biological and biochemical processes.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Arbeitman, Michelle N -- Furlong, Eileen E M -- Imam, Farhad -- Johnson, Eric -- Null, Brian H -- Baker, Bruce S -- Krasnow, Mark A -- Scott, Matthew P -- Davis, Ronald W -- White, Kevin P -- Howard Hughes Medical Institute/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2002 Sep 27;297(5590):2270-5.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Biological Sciences, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305, USA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12351791" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Glaciation in the humid tropical Andes is a sensitive indicator of mean annual temperature. Here, we present sedimentological data from lakes beyond the glacial limit in the tropical Andes indicating that deglaciation from the Last Glacial Maximum led substantial warming at high northern latitudes. Deglaciation from glacial maximum positions at Lake Titicaca, Peru/Bolivia (16 degrees S), and Lake Junin, Peru (11 degrees S), occurred 22,000 to 19,500 calendar years before the present, several thousand years before the Bolling-Allerod warming of the Northern Hemisphere and deglaciation of the Sierra Nevada, United States (36.5 degrees to 38 degrees N). The tropical Andes deglaciated while climatic conditions remained regionally wet, which reflects the dominant control of mean annual temperature on tropical glaciation.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Seltzer, G O -- Rodbell, D T -- Baker, P A -- Fritz, S C -- Tapia, P M -- Rowe, H D -- Dunbar, R B -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2002 May 31;296(5573):1685-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Earth Sciences, Syracuse University, 204 Heroy Geology Laboratory, Syracuse, NY 13244, USA. goseltze@syr.edu〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12040193" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
