    Notes: Summary The use of isoelectric focusing for the isozymic identification of cultivars and wild forms in tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) and determination of ploidy effects was investigated. Peroxidase zymograms from allopolyploid accessions (4x, 6x, 8x, and 10x, x=7) and randomly sampled plants of the cultivars ‘Kenhy’, ‘Kentucky 31’, and ‘Missouri 96’, were compared for band number, position, and staining intensity. There was little isozymic variation among plants in the tetraploid and hexaploid, but considerably more in the octoploid and decaploid members of the series. Yet no significant effects of ploidy on isozyme complexity or band number were observed. There were no consistent differences in band number, position, or frequencies among the three cultivars in spite of their diverse parentage. Isoclectric focusing can be used successfully in tall fescue, but the limited variability of the peroxidases encourages investigation of other isozyme systems in the future.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Le choix des lieux d'hivernation de la coccinelleHippodamia convergens Guérin-Méneville a été étudié à l'égard des caractéristiques morphologiques de 2 graminées introduites:Panicum coloratum (L.) etEragrostis curvula (Schrad.) Les insectes préfèrent de beaucoup les touffes d'agrostis ayant en moyenne 1 à 3 tiges par cm2. Une préférence pour les touffes de panic comportant de 110 à 130 tiges par touffe a été mise en évidence. Il n'y a pas de préférence pour une forme particulière de l'extérieur de la touffe. Avec ces données on peut désigner avec succès les touffes favorables au rassemblement des coccinelles.
    Notes: Abstract The preference in the choice of hibernacula of the convergent lady beetle,Hippodamia convergens Guérin-Meneville, was investigated with regard to morphological aspects of 2 introduced range grasses,Panicum coloratum (L.), andEragrostis curvula (Schrad.) Beetles strongly preferred tussocks with a ratio in the range of 1.0–3.0 stems per cm2 for lovegrass. Preference for klein grass tussocks ranging from 110–130 stems/clump was found. No preference was shown for a particular tussock circumference. It was demonstrated that tussocks could successfully be designated as suitable for beetle aggregation.

    Notes: Summary The interaction was studied among: 1) developing maize kernels (Zea mays L.); 2) European Corn Borer (ECB) (Ostrinia nubilalis Hubner); 3) and three fungal species,Aspergillus flavus Lk. ex Fr.,Penicillium oxalcium Currie and Thom, andFusarium moniliforme Sheld. Two hybrids with varying degrees of resistance to ECB stalk damage were grown in Iowa, Georgia, and Missouri in 1980. One-half of the plots were hand-infested with ECB egg masses. Fungal spores of individual isolates or combinations of the three species were introduced into the silk channels of developing ears in designated plots. ECB larvae were subsequently collected from developing ears. A higher incidence ofA. flavus group isolates was observed in ECB larvae collected from ears that had been inoculated withA. flavus than from insects collected from control ears. Although the resistant hybrid exhibited reduced ECB stalk damage compared with the susceptible variety, no consistent pattern of hybrid effect on the association betweenA. flavus and ECB was observed at all three locations. Differences in aflatoxin B1 levels in mature kernels from the three locations ranged from 8 ppb in Iowa samples to 419 ppb in Missouri kernels. Conditions during crop development at the Missouri location were particularly conducive to elevated presence ofA. flavus propagules in ECB larvae, increased ECB-mediated stalk damage, and greater toxin concentration in mature kernels.

    Notes: Summary Triple-labelled nutrient solution was used to compare the effects of seven root-infecting fungi on uptake of K, Ca and P by wheat. Plants grown in sand or hydroponic culture were transferred to solutions that contained42K,45Ca and32P for 24 h, then dried, ashed and digested in 6M HCl. To distinguish radiation emitted by42K,45Ca and32P plant digests were counted on two channels of a liquid scintillation counter immediately and 7 days later, after the decay of42K radiation. Plants infected byGaeumannomyces graminis took up and translocated less K, Ca and P to their shoots than uninfected plants. Other root-infecting fungi had little effect on uptake of these ions.

    Notes: Summary It has been demonstrated by an agar film technique thatL. albus can cause the breakdown of colloids of iron/silicate, iron/phosphate, aluminium/silicate and aluminium phosphate and destabilise suspensions of manganese dioxide, calcium mono-hydrogen phosphate and ferric hydroxide. Dissolution of these compounds was most marked in areas adjacent to proteoid roots (dense clusters of secondary laterals of limited growth which develop on lateral roots) and parts of the tap root. Soil associated with these regions of the root system contained more reductants and chelating agents than the bulk soil. Soil from around the roots ofL. albus exhibited much greater reducing and chelating activity than that associated with the roots of rape and buckwheat.

    Notes: Summary Measurements were made at intervals during the growth of seven different vegetable crops grown on the same soil to find how far root development and crop growth could be described by simply derived equations and to find how far the parameter values varied from crop to crop. For each crop K1 ln W+W, (where W is total plant dry weight, t ha−1 and K1 is equal to 1 t ha−1) was linearly related to time from emergence, as in past experiments. The derived equation $$\ln L = c_j + b_j \ln W - mt$$ where L is total root length per unit area, t is time from emergence, cj and bj are coefficients that depend on the crop (j) and m is a coefficient having the same value for all crops, removed 89.4% of the total variance in ln L. The best fit was obtained with a value of m that implied that about 3% of the root carbon was mineralized each day. Generally the logarithm of root density declined linearly with increasing depth. Most of the variation between the gradients of these relations for the different crops was removed by a single regression against logarithm of total root length. The main discernible differences between species in their rooting patterns were that root length for a given top weight of legumes was about half that of non legumes, that the development of storage roots was associated with a less steep decline in root density with depth than for other crops and that onions were exceptional in that the depth to which their roots penetrated did not change appreciably during much of the growing season. A single linear relationship between root depth and top weight (r 2=0.85) covered all non-leguminous crops except onions and another relationship (r 2=0.80) covered the legumes.
