    Description: The sensitivity of a Goddard Laboratory for Atmospheric Sciences global objective analysis cycle to the addition of FGGE level II-b data is assessed. The GOAS system comprises a predictive continuity provided by a model first-guess forecast integrated from a previous forecast and updated by data gathered in the interim. FGGE data originated in the Jan.-Mar. 1979 period and were acquired by rawinsondes, pilot balloons, surface stations, satellites, ships, and drifting buoys deployed during SOP-1. Focussing on 2-5 and 8-day forecasts, comparisons were made of the 6 hr forecast error at the 300 mb height in three experiments using all, no-satellite (NOSAT), and without rawinsondes or pilot balloons modes. Larger errors occurred in the case of NOSAT, while significant corrections to the GOAS predictions were noted using all the FGGE data. It was concluded that all forecasts were improved by inclusion of full FGGE data sets, including forecasting beyond one week.

    Description: Electron density profiles from ground-based and rocket-borne measurements conducted at three sites in northern Scandinavia under various degrees of geophysical disturbances are presented. These data are checked against an instantaneous picture of the ionospheric absorption obtained via the dense riometer network. A map of the riometer absorption and measured electron densities over Scandinavia is given.

    Description: Waveguide coating materials were tested at 8470 MHz for insertion loss. Samples of these coatings on waveguide pieces without flanges were tested in an environmental chamber to simulate the effects of high power microwave heating. Test results indicated that three types of coating materials are acceptable with regard to insertion loss. However, simulated microwave heating caused debonding of Metcot 7 and BD-991 coatings, resulting in peelings in the waveguide. The higher cost Chemglaze R104 does not exhibit this problem.

    Description: A set of nonlinear partial differential equations suitable for the description of a class of turbulent three-dimensional flow fields in select geometries is identified. On the basis of the concept of enforcing a penalty constraint to ensure accurate accounting of ordering effects, a finite element numerical solution algorithm is established for the equation set and the theoretical aspects of accuracy, convergence and stability are identified and quantized. Hypermatrix constructions are used to formulate the reduction of the computational aspects of the theory to practice. The robustness of the algorithm, and the computer program embodiment, have been verified for pertinent flow configurations.

    Description: Double-spacecraft observations presented suggest that growth phase phenomena are widespread in the outer magnetosphere and can occur simultaneously at nightside locations 4-5 hours apart in local time. Evidence is also adduced from multiple-spacecraft data and comprehensive magnetometer and riometer data against the concept that growth phase features are not generally due to substorm activity at other locations in the auroral or polar regions. A close relationship is noted between putative energy input to the magnetosphere and the sensitive response of the magnetic field and energetic particles at pre- and near-midnight geostationary orbit locations. This relationship is shown explicitly for the cases of three event periods. Data are also presented which suggest that growth phase features at synchronous orbit can be strictly controlled by IMF orientations.

    Description: Results are presented of a study of some unusual density relations between olivine and coexisting liquid in the system fosterite-fayalite. At 1 atmosphere pressure it is found that olivine floats on its coexisting liquid for intermediate compositions on this binary because of extreme partitioning of Fe into the melt phase. At 20 kilobars, the usual behavior of olivine settling is found to occur because the partitioning of Fe in the melt is reduced, aided possibly by the dissolution of CO2 in the melt from the use of a graphite container. It is determined that olivine flotation and settling are rapid in a time period of only a few hours because viscosities are slightly greater than that of paraffin oil at room temperature. Some adcumulate textures with good triple junction grain boundaries are found to be developed. Observations of differentiated magmatic systems suggest that the mechanisms by which magmas can differentiate vary considerably in the ultramafic to tholeiitic compositional range.

    Description: The method of three-dimensional stylus profilometry is presented together with a computer-based system for transforming the surface topography of a specimen into an intensity image. Examples are given in which intensity images obtained by stylus profilometry are compared with scanning electron micrographs and two other representations of the stylus data. The comparisons are made for three types of surface irregularities: a discrete feature, a periodic profile surface, and a random profile surface. It is shown that stylus profilometry provides high vertical resolution for low sloped surfaces and thus can be useful in revealing features not easily detectable with other methods.

    Description: Time averages of the latitudinal distribution of kinetic energy and terms of the kinetic energy equation are presented as depicted by analyses of the First GARP Global Experiment during the First Special Observing Period. It is found that the monthly averages exhibit peaks in the stationary wave energy at 30 degrees N and in the tropics, while global decompositions of the streamfunction and velocity potential in spherical harmonics are truncated at the fourth degree. The kinetic energy distribution of the associated wind field displays peaks in the tropics and northern mid-latitudes in January, but only a tropical peak in February. These analyses support the Eliassen-Palm relationship for latitudinal momentum and geopotential wave transport, particularly in the mid-latitudes. However, in the deep tropics, latitudinal convergence of the fully resolved stationary wave momentum transport accompanies latitudinal convergence of stationary wave geopotential flux in westerly flow.

    Description: It is shown that Extremely Low Frequency, or 'lion' roars are closely coupled to quasi-periodic, large scale magnetosheath structures. Because the latter are waves generated by the drift mirror instability, an attempt is made to identify and describe the magnetic and plasma features associated with this instability. Observations and analyses of the large scale structures using ISEE 1 and 2 data for the earth's magnetosheath and Pioneer 11 data for Jupiter and Saturn are presented, along with the background of the drift mirror waves. The cyclotron and drift mirror instabilities occurring in the magnetosheath are natural relaxation processes which reduce the plasma pressure anisotropies created by preferential heating of the solar wind plasma as it passes through the bow shock, as well as the compression occurring when the plasma and fields approach the near-subsolar magnetopause.
