    Description: The Human society is getting more and more involved with scientific and environmental issues both in terms of consciousness of good practices or participation in legislative decision-making processes. A common effort to preserve our planet is asked every day, for example through recycling practices, reduction of pollutant emission, use of alternative energies and awareness of risks natural and human-induced hazards. In addition, public opinion is often involved for issues of scientific interest (e.g. genetically modified organisms GMO). Unfortunately, the Eurobarometer (Eurobarometer Special 419 Report, Public perceptions of Science, Research and Innovation, 2014) indicates, especially for the Italian population, a low interest in science and therefore a lack of confidence in the potential of the research. It is hence important for people to be informed of the progress made by science and the importance of the researchers’ role. Education, awareness and dissemination of scientific results and issues must be made through simple and appealing channels that must reach all levels of society and age groups: from children to older people. A common and comprehensible language for everyone can be found in Graphic Arts. For this reasons, the working group for science dissemination of La Spezia has increased, in recent years, close relationship with some artists (especially graphic designers). The collaboration between two different worlds (art and science) has allowed us to see an unusual approach and to translate concepts developed in images which everyone can understand also under an emotional point of view. Different techniques and tools based on the target to be reached have been employed. 1. Conferences. Gender differences issues in science professions and more generally in society has been addressed through interactive conferences and round tables during the European Researchers’ Night 2015 and other occasions for general public. Arguments and questions were described and imprinted in the minds of the public thanks to the support of speed painting and visual scribing, which made it more understandable, interesting and direct. 2. Edutainment activities. Two games have been build up for children aged between 7 and 13 years as a part of the European Researchers’ Night activities (2011 and 2014-2015): a great board game with questions and drawings related to marine ecology and environmental protection and a memory game through which children can learn notions on Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Environment. Children’s learning is facilitated if bound by game, and in this case images are more direct than words. 3. Surveys. A graphic questionnaire has been created in order to understand science perception and/or stereotypes in children who do not yet know how to read and write. In all these cases the relationship between researchers and artists has been extremely constructive and fruitful: researchers had to simplify their object of study in order to be able to disclose concepts that have been then translated into a simple and easy language.

    Description: The analysis of different global energy scenarios in part I of the report confirms that the exploitation of energy efficiency potentials and the use of renewable energies play a key role in reaching global CO2 reduction targets. An assessment on the basis of a broad literature research in part II shows that the technical potentials of renewable energy technologies are a multiple of today's global final energy consumption. The analysis of cost estimates for renewable electricity generation technologies and even long term cost projections across the key studies in part III demonstrates that assumptions are in reasonable agreement. In part IV it is shown that by implementing technical potentials for energy efficiency improvements in demand and supply sectors by 2050 can be limited to 48% of primary energy supply in IEA's "Energy Technology Perspectives" baseline scenario. It was found that a large potential for cost-effective measures exists, equivalent to around 55-60% of energy savings of all included efficiency measures (part V). The results of the analysis on behavioural changes in part VI show that behavioural dimensions are not sufficiently included in energy scenarios. Accordingly major research challenges are revealed.

    Notes: A numerical model for calculating the performance of a premixed pulsed supersonic HF chemical laser, pumped by the H2+F2 chain reaction, is presented. The laser kinetic equations, which are coupled to the supersonic gas dynamics and to the chemical equations, are integrated along the flow direction. The model which has been shown to accurately predict the measured gain coefficients, the lasing induction times, and the laser power output, has been used for parametric studies leading to a better understanding of the laser operation. Conditions for maximum gain and maximum laser energy for each of the input parameters were investigated. The lasing zone length in the flow direction was studied. A comparison between the experimental and calculated results shows that the model can be used to evaluate unknown chemical and energy transfer rates.

    Notes: Experimental study of a supersonic pulsed, H2+F2 pumped HF laser is presented. The reactants are premixed and then expanded through a supersonic nozzle into the laser cavity, whereupon the reaction is initiated by an electrical discharge at a high repetition rate. The small-signal gain of some of the laser lines was measured as a function of the distance downstream from the initiation point and as a function of the reactants concentration. The spectral content of a laser pulse was analyzed and the induction times between the initiation and the onset of lasing on different laser lines were measured. The output power was measured as a function of the discharge voltage, the discharge pulse frequency and the reactants concentration. The results are compared with the lasing characteristics of a cold reaction, H2+SF6 -pumped laser.

    Notes: A simple low-cost, uniform-sized liquid droplet generator is described. The generator is based on the breakup phenomenon of a liquid jet flowing out of a capillary by imposing mechanical disturbances on it. The generator enables the injection of droplets into systems where injection is difficult, with minimum disturbance. It has been shown, theoretically and experimentally, that scattering of the droplets around the mean trajectory due to capillary vertical vibrations is negligible over a wide range of disturbance frequencies. The performance of the droplet generator is considerably deteriorated around the resonance frequencies of the capillary.

    Notes: The aim of this study was to demonstrate the feasibility of biographical inventories free of the limitations common to many current biographical measures by constructing and validating an inventory composed of homogeneous scales, with item content that is factual and fair, to assess personality traits predictive of leadership. The experimental inventory, with tentative scales for Dominance, Emotional Stability, Need for Achievement, Self-Confidence, and Sociability, was administered to incoming midshipmen at the US Naval Academy and item analyzed. The validity of the final scales was appraised against subsequent peer ratings of the traits and of leadership shortly after entering the Academy; military performance grades, and midshipman rank and leadership position at the Academy; and recommendations for promotion after graduating and serving as an officer. The Sociability, Dominance, and Need for Achievement scales demonstrated convergent and discriminant validity, and all of the scales except Self-Confidence correlated with the leadership criteria. The Sociability scale’s consistent correlations with several of the leadership criteria, including a nontrivial correlation (r = 0.28) with the leadership peer rating, implies that this measure may be useful in assessing leadership potential.

    Notes: A commercially available flat flame burner with a sintered porous bronze disk was used to stabilize premixed H2/air flames at atmospheric pressure. Temperatures for various stoichiometries, flow rates, and heights above the burner disk have been measured by coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering with an accuracy of ≈2.5%. The corresponding exhaust gas compositions have been derived from equilibrium calculations. This burner together with the data presented in this article can be used for the verification or calibration of a variety of measuring techniques in combustion research.

    Notes: This note contains ramifications of results of Delbaen et al. (2002). Assuming that the price process is locally bounded and admits an equivalent local martingale measure with finite entropy, we show, without further assumption, that in the case of exponential utility the optimal portfolio process is a martingale with respect to each local martingale measure with finite entropy. Moreover, the optimal value always can be attained on a sequence of uniformly bounded portfolios.
