    Description: Pin bone removing is a new equipment for pin-bone removal increase customer satisfaction and revenue even further the bones were pulled out at good speed. Pin boning especially is very often done manually which causes lots of global transports to low cost countries for processing new technique will help make processing operations more efficient and profitable The new generation pin bone removing equipment is mainly for trout and is not suitable for carp fishes the new pin bone remover which works with air of compressor and hand. has proved to work in almost twenty different fish species, including Great silver smelt, Pike Perch, Coho, Sockeye salmon, Atlantic Salmon, Sea Trout, Saithe, Haddock, Herring, Whitefish, Chinook, Salmon, Perch, Rainbow Trout, Char, Mackerel and Hake. Therefore it will be suitable for carp fishes too. After a day’s work all vital parts can be removed by hand without any tools, for effective cleaning to the fish and gives nice looking filets and is determined to help processors by offering state of the art bone-removing equipment which will increase speed, yield and efficiency. But pin bone removing done manually does not give a nice looking fillet also has a considerable waste of fish.

    Description: Fish sausages were made from minced fish meat and additives using dehydrogenated vegetable oil and fish oil. Four experimental groups were studied; Group 1 with 65% minced fish meat and 12% soybean oil, Group 2 with 65% minced fish meat and 12% olive oil, Group 3 with 65% minced fish meat and a mixture of 6% fish oil and 6% soybean oil, and Group 4 with 65% minced fish meat and 11.3% corn oil and 0.7% cod liver oil. In all the experimental groups the fish was first headed, the entrails removed and then washed and cut into small pieces. The fish pieces were then put in the meat extractor where the skin and bones were separated from the meat. The minced fish meat was rinsed with clean water and the water was let to drain. The additives for each experimental group were then blended with the minced meat and the mixture was filled in the sausage casings. The stuffed sausage casings were then placed in containers and put in a room to cook. After cooking the sausages were packed and stored in the refrigerator. The quality of the product was tested (chemical, microbial and organoleptic) from phase zero through the entire experimental period which lasted 30 days. Based on the results obtained it was evident that sausages in the experimental Group 1 showed better taste and flavor as compared to those in the other groups.

    Description: Mariculture is one of the most important sub sector fisheries industry in Asia-pacific region. There are over 40 marine fish species commonly cultured, such as groupers (Epinephlus spp.), snappers (Lutjanus spp.) and Asian sea bass (Lattes calcarifer). But this industry in Southeast Asia experienced serious disease problem since the late 1980s. Khouzestan province has a coastal line about 200 km with many Creek and suitable area for Mariculture. Marine fish culture in Khouzestan province in floating net cages was successfully initiated in Ghazaleh Creek following development of Epinephlus coioides artificial seed production in the 1372. This study has been conducted since 1384 to 1387 in Bandar-e-Imam station. The aim of this research project was to determine the health management status in cage and hatchery, identification of marine fish pathogens (Bacteria, Fungi and parasite), examination of heavy metal in cages sediment and test the physico chemical factors of water in cages and hatchery. Different parts of broodstocks body and fingerlings including intestine, gills and body surface were examined. In this study, 18 Genus and species of bacteria such as Vibrio alginolyticus, Vibrio anguillarum, Vibrio splendidus, Vibrio vulnificus, Plesiomonas shigelloides, Aeromonas hydrophila, Aeromonas caviae, Pseudomonas sp. were diagnosed. Also 7 Genus and species of fungi such as: Aspergillus Niger, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus fumigatus, Penicillium sp. And Fusarium sp. Were isolated. In this survey following of disease appearance parasites such as; protozoans Amyloodinium sp. And Trichodina sp. In E.coioides and Acanthopagrus latus and Sparidentex hasta, monogean such as Benedenia sp. In E.coioides and S. hasta, isopoda probably Nerocila sp. In nasal cavity of E.coioides and copepods such as: Caligus sp. And Lernanthropus sp. In A.latus and S.hasta were identified. In this study, microorganisms (bacteria, fungi and parasites) isolated from three different marine fishes species, were reported for the first time in Iran. The range of the physico-chemical parameters of water in cages were: DO (5.42-10.24 ppm), BOD5 (1.51-10.24 ppm), No_2 (0.0197-0.89 ppm), No_3 (3.53-11.93 ppm), Po_4 (0.965-6.05 ppm), turbidity (4-58 NTU) and ammonia (0.0008-0.03 ppm). According to the results parameters such as nitrate, nitrite and turbidity were found more than standard levels. Heavy metals: Ni and Pb relatively high observed.

    Description: Exploitation of bony fishes resources started on 12 October 2005 and finished on 9 April 2006 in 2005-2006. 142 beach seines caught about 14333.4 tons of bony fishes by 47101 hauling. The total catch was estimated 21844.7 tones (Includes illegal fishery). Kutum, mullets and common carp comprised more than 97 percent of total catch. Length classes 39-40, 31-32 and 40-41 cm predominated for kutum, golden grey mullet and common carp, respectively. Age groups 3 to 5 year comprised 84.2, 74.8 and 83.7 percent for Kutum, golden grey mullet and common carp, respectively and age group 4 year was dominant with 42.0, 35.9 and 43.0 percent, respectively. K value and L_∞ calculated 0.26 (/year) and 58.3 cm for Kutum and 0.15 (/year) and 61.5 cm for golden grey mullet, respectively. The total biomass and MSY estimated about 24733.7 and 8550.4 tones for kutum and about 16948.0 and 4999.0 tones for golden grey mullet, respectively. Exploitation rate (E) calculated 0.71 and 0.70 for Kutum and golden grey mullet, respectively. In 2006-2007, the exploitation of bony fishes resources started on 12 October 2006 and finished on 7 April 2007 in 2006-2007. 134 beach seines caught about 14120.0 tons of bony fishes by 48470 hauling. The total catch was estimated 23801.8 tones (Includes illegal fishery). Kutum, mullets and common carp comprised more than 98.5 percent of total catch. Length classes 39-40 and 38-39 cm predominated for kutum and common carp, respectively and length classes 27-28 and 29-30 cm predominated for golden grey mullet. Age groups 3 to 5 year comprised 80.2 and 71.8 percent for kutum and golden grey mullet, respectively and age groups 4 to 6 year comprised 71.8 percent for common carp. Age group 3, 4 and 5 year was dominant with 35.5, 32.1 and 27.1 percent for kutum, golden grey mullet and common carp respectively. K value and L∞ calculated 0.27 (/year) and 60.7 cm for Kutum, 0.2 (/year) and 58.4 cm for golden grey mullet and 0.19 (/year) and 66.7 cm for common carp, respectively. The total biomass and MSY estimated about 46654.9 and 14801.4 tones for Kutum, about 19549.0 and 5748.4 tones for golden grey mullet and about 10584.3 and 2186.0 tones for common carp, respectively. Exploitation rate (E) calculated 0.69, 0.53 and 0.52 for kutum, golden grey mullet and common carp, respectively.

    Description: Investigation on small pelagic fishes in the north of the Persian Gulf (Qeshm Island and Bandar Lengeh) coastal waters during October 2006 to September 2008, illustrated that 6 sardine and 2 anchovy species were locally existed. Sind sardinella (Sardinella sindensis) and Buccaneer anchovy (Encrasicholina punctifer) were dominated in this area. The peak of sexual maturity for Sind sardinella and Buccaneer anchovy occurred in spring and summer respectively. Reproduction period for Sind sardinella was from the middle of winter to late spring, and Buccaneer anchovy encompassed reproduction capacity all the year. The female: male ratio was calculated 1:0.7 and 1:0.9 for Sind sardinella, 1:1.27 and 1:1 for Buccaneer anchovy in Qeshm Island and Bandar lengeh sequentially. The mean of absolute fecundity were estimated 16234 and 16168 for Sind sardinella, 1277 and 1141 for Buccaneer anchovy in Qeshm Island and Bandar Lengeh respectively. L_M50 and L_C50 were calculated and the results showed both species mainly caught before length of maturity, and the mass populations have not sufficient opportunity to reproduction. Both species were planktonivore, theirs food prefect mainly consisted of copepods, naplius and bivalves. Vacuity index indicated both spices were semi-voracious appetite fishes. Based on calculated length-weight relationships in S. sindensis and E. punctifer, they have isometric growth. Growth parameters were estimated, the results illustrated that they were growth fast and short live species, which suggested S. sardinella and E. punctifer have 3 and 2 years maximum life span respectively. The recruitment pattern indicated double recruitment peaks per year in both species. Annually, four cohorts were distinguished in Sind sardinella and 3 cohorts in Buccaneer anchovy. Total mortality (Z), natural mortality (M) and fishing mortality (F) were estimated in both species, and the values of exploitation ratio (0.78 & 0.74) in Sind sardinella and (0.72 & 0.41) in Buccaneer anchovy were reasonable for current fishing effort due their short life span. Analysis of the results showed that CPUE in sardine and anchovy affected by reproduction and feeding processes. Results showed significant correlation between sardine CPUE and Sardine GaSI (P〈0.05, r= 0.499), similarly between anchovy CPUE and anchovy GSI (P〈0.05, r=-0.635). Further, significant correlation between sea surface temperature with sardine CPUE (P〈0.05, r=0.493), phytoplankton distribution (P〈0.01, r=0.560), anchovy GSI (P〈0.05, r=0.526), anchovy GaSI (P〈0.05, r=-0.500) and chlorophyll a (P〈0.01, r=0.780). Phytoplankton distribution with sardine GSI (P〈0.05, r=0.453), zooplankton distribution with anchovy GSI (P〈0.05, r=0.671), and chlorophyll with sardine GSI (P〈0.01, r=0.761) have significant correlation.

    Description: From June 2004 to March 2006, a survey in Iran waters (Bushehr province) has completed. Sampling was accomplished in two area, north and south. In this period 15 cruises achieved in summer and 3 cruises in autumn and winter. In each cruise of north and south area 18 and 30 stations were sampled respectively. Stations row on three depth stratums that is, below 10 m, 10-20 m, and 20-30 m in total area from Bahrekan to Motaf. Some Biological parameters such as sex stages, sex ratio, mean total length, species composition were measured. Duration of shrimp fishing season in years 2004, 2005 and 2006 were 40, 44 and 40 days in summer respectively. In June and august the Catch per Unit Effort (CPUE) in south was more than northern area. CPUE increases in north area especially at the end of summer during fishing season gradually. Computing on Biomass estimation resulted 674, 1024 and 873 ton in years 2004, 2005 and 2006 respectively for all shrimp species (usually tiger shrimp, white shrimp and other). Total commercial landing of shrimp catch in above years were 1602, 1597 and 1110 ton respectively. Percentage of tiger shrimp in commercial landing in above years was 77, 75 and 84 respectively. We found that the least mean length of tiger shrimp was observed in southern area especially from Motaf to Rodmond stations. The schools of prawn penaeus semisulcatus enter to Bushehr waters from southern area that is Motaf region. Other than Motaf; Nakhilu, Rase khan and Rod-mond show same characteristics. Also in this region, density of shrimp increases with depth in most summer cruises. The result from analyses of gonad maturation studies shows the adult and mature females (stages III and IV) of P. semisulcatus accumulate in northern area at the end of autumn. This stock catches in autumn by illegal fishing.

    Description: A variety of products made from fish meat is increasingly being produced in most countries. The availability of low cost ingredients, the use of suitable formulations and modern equipment has made it feasible to produce different products of high nutritious value to satisfy consumer demands. Starch is an ingredient used in most products in the food industry because of its physical characteristics. In the present study fish ball were prepared using starch from two different sources (wheat and potato) either individually or by mixing equal proportions of two sources of starch at a rate of 5, 10 and 15% to 80% ground meat of silver carp. A control group was also tested without adding starch. Results obtained indicate that flavor, odor and texture of the resulting product made with 10% starch were more acceptable as compared to the other trials. Fish ball made with the addition of 15% starch were lighter in color and sticky and loses its strength to form. No significant differences were observed in color, flavor, odor and texture of fish ball in trials containing 10% starch from one individual source (p〉0.05) and the resulting product in these trials were rated higher in organoleptic tests as compared to those containing 5 and 15% starch. Among trials containing two sources of starch, mixed trials with potato and wheat (5% potato + 5% wheat) were rated higher in organoleptic tests as compared to the other trials(p〈0.05).

    Description: Aras dam reservoir situated in the northwest of Iran, west Azarbaijan province, is the only water resource of Astacus leptodactylus harvest in the country that more than 250tons of this species were exported to different countries all over the world, annually. On the other hand, one of the polices of Iranian Science Fisheries Institute is the release of this species into other water resources in the country and for this purpose, the study of risky diseases such as Crayfish pest (Aphanomysis astasi) and other zoonotic diseases are considered as the research priorities of aquaculture development of the country. This study was carried out to health screening of Astacus leptodactylus at Aras dam reservoir from winter 2013 to fall 2014. In this regard, A total of 394 harvested livefreshwater crayfish Astacus leptodactylus (255males, 139females) weretested. 9 epibionts and parasites peritrich protozoans were identified. From Metazoan parasites group, Branchiobdella kozarovi with incidence rate of (100%) in obtained samples was the only isolated organism from this group that identified up to species level. There was a heavy damage in gills of samples with Aeolosoma hemprichi (Annelid) in winter with90% prevalence. Furthermore, Other Epibiont fouling organisms such as Rotatoria; free living nematods and suctoria were observed in this survey. The fungi study of the lesions and melanized spots of mentioned samples revealed their infection to Penicillium expansum; Aspergillus flavus; Alternaria sp. ; Fusarium sp. and Saprolegnia sp. The results of bacterial study confirmed the presence of pathogen bacteria in Astacus leptodactylus. The most frequency percentage (15.16%) in hepatopancrease were related to Aeromonas hydrophila and the least one (1.37%) were due to Yersinia bacteria. Also, only Aeromonas hydrophila and Staphylococcus aureus were isolated and identified from heamolymph, respectively. The results revealed that the combination of Salmonella typhi, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus sp. has caused the most infection rate while. Yersinia ruckeri and Salmonella typhi has caused the least infections in Astacus leptodactylus. According to the isolation of 6 bacteria species from hepatopancreas and 2 species from heamplymph , it can be concluded that hepatopancreas enjoyed the higher infection rate compared to haemolymph in the obtained samples.

    Description: The project is funded by the CASPECO Project which is the Third Phase of the GEF supported project in the Caspian Sea region titled “The Caspian Sea: Restoring Depleted Fisheries and Consolidation of a Permanent Regional Environmental Governance Framework”, and implemented by the Iranian Fisheries Research Organization (IFRO) in partnership with four Coastal Research Centers affiliated to IFRO, Coldwater Fishes Research Centre (CFRC).The project's objective is to improve the conservation and restoration of Caspian Salmon (Salmo trutta caspius) stocks. In accordance with IUCN criteria Caspian Salmon is placed in the red list of endangered fish. In the recent decades the destruction of habitats for juveniles, reduction of genetic diversity and fish immune system were main causes of the Caspian salmon decline. Numbers of public meetings were held with participation of fishing communities’ representatives, experts, relevant local authorities and experts of the IFRO and Iranian Fisheries Organization (IFO), Iran Environment Protection Organization (IEPO), Water Resource Management (Ministry of Energy) and University senior professors, in order to create interaction and understanding of the project objectives. Educational awareness and extension program were conducted with the involvement of fisheries communities, private sector and NGO associations. The results of the project suggests that cross-sectoral coordination for sustainable fisheries can be achieved through building partnerships and enhancing communication between the environment, private, fisheries sectors and academia. Cross-sectoral cooperation through this project improved public awareness on growing risks facing Caspian Salmon from different sources including local sources (illegal fishing and over-fishing, urban wastewater, environment destruction, industrial pollutants, pollution of air and water resources), new emerging and invasive organisms, climate change, implications of the Caspian salmon population decline on economic and social affairs of the people who depend on them for their livelihood and food security and their role in fish stock protection. The project, through its capacity building, extension and educational programs and efforts to link science to management, could translate scientific findings into an action agenda for managers and policy makers that can bring an improvement in the future of the Caspian Sea salmon stock.

    Description: The overfishing and changing environmental following the introduction of the comb jelly Mnemiopsis leidyi in the Caspian Sea, the population structure has a strong influence on kilka fishes in the Caspian Sea and therefore to in this investigation which had been done in commercial catch regions (where discharged theirs catch) in three ports Babolsar, Amirabad (in mazandaran) and Anzali (in Guilan), stimated catch and catch per unit effort, the age structur of catch, length- weight relationship, von Bertalanffy growth parameters, condition factor, sex ratios, maturity stags, spawning and feeding. The result shown that catch of kilka in Iranian coastal in 2012 decreased from 24080 ton to 22696 ton in 2013. But CPUE increased was 2.7 ton (Vessel ×Night) and there was no significant changes. Common kilka was the predominant all months of the year, 98.1 and 98.9 percent in 2012 and 2013 respectively. The mean length was 104.4±10.5 and 101.6±11.2 at the same time and range length 92/ 5 – 117/5 mm were the dominant population(about 75%). Relative abundance of fish less than 77.5 mm and more than 127.5 mm is very low. Age abundance during this period have not been substantially changed and always fishes with 3 and 4 year olds had the highest frequency73.6 and 73.5 percent respectively. The parameters of the Von Bertalanffy growth curve were (8.141) 048.1 for common kilka. The instantaneous coefficient of natural mortality (M) was 0.506 yr-1. The instantaneous coefficient of fihing mortality and total mortality were 0.694 yr-1 and 1.2 yr^-1 , respectively. The exploitation rate of common kilka varied during 2012-2013 between 0.41-0.50. The mean condition factor 1.41±0.14 (n=5801) and 1.38±0.16 (n=6754) at the same time respectively. According to statistical analysis Anova oneway were a significant difference between condition factor at the same time . Main prey common kilka was Acartia tonsa accounting for over 80%. It seems Common kilka due to a decrease in the frequency of other zooplankton species depend more than ever on Acartia tonsa and this species is probably a concentration of prey for Common kilka.

    Description: Fish is a valuable nutritional source witch use of it in daily meal has a beneficial role on nutritional needs supply and also causes mental and physical health especially in people who have protein and food deficiencies. Unfortunately, per capita consumption of sea foods in Iran is 5.5Kg which is very lower than world standards (18 kg). So, study on fish ice cream formulation, by use of fish protein concentrate (FPC) instead of milk protein, had done to make variation in sea foods products and also increase per capita consumption of these kinds of foods. FPC has very high protein concentration and a lot of necessary amino acids like lysine and methionine. Also its protein is very digestible with highly biological value and it's PER in compare with casein PER is high. At first fish protein concentrate type A produced from silver carp in three steps by the extraction with isopropyl alcohol solvent and heat. Microbiological and physicochemical specifications of produced FPC by rules of FDA and FAO were accepted. Finally according to panel test results, substitution of 30 percent of milk with FPC in comparison with 50%, 70% FPC substitution prepared (P〈0/05). Also microbiological and physicochemical specifications of product were tested and results in compare with national standards of Iran were accepted.

    Description: To study the preparation of frozen minced meat from abramis brama orientalis commonly known as sim from Arras lake and from silver carp cultured in the Azerbaijan province, and later this minced meat converted to fish ball and fish burger, in this process microbial, chemical and organoleptic tests was done on samples for frozen minced meat on Sims fish the TVN was 10.1 in zero phase and 14.1 after three month and peroxide value from 0.9 t0 3.1 at the same duration. But he value was higher when converted to fish ball, TVN ranged from 14 to17.6 and per oxide from 1.1 to 4.7 after three month, the unit for TVN was mg/100gram and peroxide unit meq/1000 gram, the microbial tests was also resulted in an acceptable range, the meat of Sims fish had no significant difference with the silver carp comparatively only the color and the smell of the fish was little different, so we could conclude that we can use Sim fish meat for frozen minced meat product and this can increase the consumption of fish in the region in the future.

    Description: An artificial Reef is a fabricated, underwater structure, typically built for promoting marine life in areas of generally featureless bottom. Creating artificial reefs began from 2000 in southern provinces in Iran. This study has surveyed about the Bushehr and Khozestan states. The objective is to determine the effectiveness of artificial reefs in attracting and enhancing the production different aquatics through increasing of fish assemblage and fishery. The performance of artificial reefs deployed off the coast of the Persian Gulf in 10 to 15m, was evaluated. The reefs comprised of seven artificial and one control (natural) statistical tests plan in three replicates. Three types of artificial reefs were used in this study. That two were designed reefs and one was not designed or used material. The experimental plan consisted (i) Reef ball (R), designed hemispherical shaped; (ii) Laneh Mahi (L), designed pyramid shaped; (iii) Used material (U); (iv) mixed (RL); (v) mixed (RU); (vi) mixed (LU); (vii) mixed (RLU); and (viii) control site (CS). Trap nets and under-water visual census surveys were adopted for seasonal sampling of fish aggregation. Results of statistical analysis using ANOVA and T-test of the mean Catch per Unit Effort (CPUE) showed significant difference (p〈0.05) in term of computing number of fish for aggregation of fishes. The study has concluded that reef deployments have influenced favorably the fish communities and fish harvests. Therefore, the artificial reefs, especially the mixed RLU, are appropriate tools for future fishing enhancement in the Persian Gulf of Iran.

    Description: This feasibility study carried out in response to request of Tehran Province Fisheries Management, in order to Qanat Salehabad water assessment for aquaculture relataed purposes in Tehran Municipality – Regions 19 & 20. During 6 monthes between May – October 2011 in 3 sampling stations by 3 replicates investigations executed. Physic-chemical, Heavy methals, organochloro-organophosphore pesticides and microbial nominated parameters analysed in reference to Iran national and international standards as well, resulted an overall assessment on quality and quantity of Qanat water for aquaculture purposes. Results expressed station 1 in all studied seasons can be develop for fisheries warmwater applications and in cold seasons (September-March) fisheries coldwater relevant activities can be consider. Stations No 2 & 3 known as infeasible for fisheries applications but would be recommend for agriculture rrigation. According to the results, possibility of developing live fish shopping centers (Cold – warmwatetr fishes) between station 1 and before crossing the Qanat flow and Behesht-e-Zahra freeway is considerable, indeed water rights could be negotiate between Tehran Municipality and Tehran province Fisheries Bureo. Also application of feasible anti microbial filters and other minimum limitation parameters control is necessary before leading Qanat water flow into proposed live fish shop. And suitable septic tank is recommended at the outlet of proposed fisheries units. Monitoring of nominated physic-chemical & microbial parameters during operation of fisheries unites highly recommended.

    Description: A mass-balance Ecopath model of coastal areas in the Caspian Sea has been constructed for a quantitative description of the trophic structure of the ecosystem. The model is used to estimate the important biological parameters and relationships among the different ecologically important groups. Twenty five species were used in the present analysis. The model is based on the data collected of Kilka fisheries, beach seining (Bony fish fisheries), and set Gillnet (Sturgeon Fisheries) and also dietary information. Total landings along the Iranian portion of southern Caspian coast reached 39647 t, including sturgeon (41 t), kilka (22873 t) and bony fishes (16733 t) in 2014. Two species of kilka (Common kilka and Anchovy) are important commercially in the Caspian Sea, together accounting in the past decade for 〉 60 % of the total catch, as well as being a crucial part of the food chain. The mean average trophic level was estimated at 3.17 by Ecopath software. In this research, the mean level were studied between eight species varied from 2.56 to 4.04, Sander lucioperca occupy the highest and the as vimba vimba was the lowest level. The ranges of total mortality varied from 0.5 to 2.56 per years. The food consumption rate was estimated about 101.56 per year Mixd trophic level index (MTI) showed small pelagic fishes as prey, have crucial role in feeding of pelagic predators population such as invasion of the ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi, bream fish and benthic fish such as sturgeon. In general, niche overlap was greater in more species such as Alburnus chalcoides, Rutilus rutilus, Clupeonella cultriventris, Rutilus kutum and M. leidyi who consumed large amounts of plankton. In conclusion small pelagic fish exert a major control on the trophic dynamics of the Caspian Sea ecosystems and constitute midtrophic-level populations.

    Description: Biological characteristics of Liza klunzingeri were studied in two coastal areas, Sajaphi and Bahrekan, of eastern Khuzestan during March to February 2007. Among total 1880 measured fish specimens, 947 specimens were analyzed. The mean value of Gonado-somatic Index (GSI) for the male and female fish were calculated as 0.96± 1.39 and 3.25 ± 3.26 respectively. The GSI value was highest in November and lowest in July. The mean value of condition factor (K) was 1.25± 0.14 in male and 1.21± 0.15 for female. The highest K value were observed in June and the lowest value in February. The lenght at first maturity regardless of sexuality, was found to be 14.5 cm and the time of spawning based on reproduction pattern were determined in Nov- Dec. The length-weight relationship were calculated as Y=0.024L^2.76 (n=226R2=0.72) for males, Y=0.011L^3.00 (n=444R2= 0.78) for females and Y=0.0208L^2.82 (n=670R2 =0.82) for total fishes and also it’s found significant in level length weight relationship in (P〈0.05). According to biological characteristics and referring to American fisheries society (AFS) indices and Fuzzy logic expert system, Lize klunzingeri is classified as low vulnerable species.

    Description: The study investigated the acute toxicity of 2, 3-dicholrovinyl dimethyl phosphate (Sniper 1000EC) on the African mud catfish, Clarias gariepinus juveniles (mean weight 19.47 ~c 1.05g) using static bioassay method. Sniper 1000EC is an organophosphate pesticide. Each treatment in the acute test was in triplicate with bioassay media concentration of 0,5, 10, 15 and 20 mg/l. Data on mortalities of fish, water physic-chemical parameters as well as changes in haematological indices were subjected to one way analysis of variance (ANOVA) at 5% probability level. Duncan multiple range test was used to separate differences between the means. The 96hr LC50 estimated by probit analysis during the exposure was found to be 8.20mg/l. Behavioural abnormalities of the exposed fish included erratic and uncoordinated swimming and bleached skin with lesion at the highest concentration (20mg/l). Blood dyscrasias attributable to the toxicant was observed with a significant (p〈0.05) decrease in haemoglobin, haematocrit, red blood cells, white blood cells, lymphocytes and monocytes. Mean corpuscular volume (MCV), Mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), neutrophils, eosinophil and basophil increased significantly (p〈0.05) with increasing concentrations of the toxicant. These abnormalities in body and blood parameters as a result of exposure to the toxicant make the study to recommend that the use of Sniper 1000EC by local fishermen be banned to preserve aquatic lives in Nigerian inland water bodies.

    Description: Climate change will have significant impacts on Nigeria's freshwater and marine aquatic systems. and hence on the countries fisheries and aquaculture. Fisheries and aquaculture are highly vulnerable to changes in weather pattern. and the impacts, which could be negative or positive, will vary from the coastal areas to the drier northern parts of the country. Elevated water temperalures will affect fish physiological processes, thereby affecting spawning. survival of the juveniles, recruit into the exploitable phase of population, population size, production and yield. The impacts of increased flooding of the freswater bodies will be negative through erosion of watershed, destruction of fish feeding and breeding habitats, decrease in primary productivity and alteration of the normal resilience of the aquatic systems, or positive in expansion of aquatic habitats for primary and fish productions especially during the dry season. Drought will exacerbate draw down of the lakes and reservoirs, and insufficient flow in the river hasins for spawning and primary pro duction thereby affecting fish production. Rise in the water level of the Atlantic ocean will lead to intrusion of more salty wafer into The river delta areas, and inundation of the coastal low-lying areas, thus affecting distribution of both the freshwater and marine fishes as a result of changes in the physical and chemical properties of the waters. The impacts will ultimately affect fish population, production and supply, thereby affecting the livelihood of over 26 million people engaged in the primary and secondary sectors of the fisheries industry, as well as food security of the country. The adaptation and mitigation strategies will be based on the peculiar characteristics and interactions of fisheries and aquaculture within the framework of feasible policy instruments. Strategies and policy measures need to be evolved to combat the observable and projected impacts of climate change on fisheries and aquaculture, in order to protect the livelihoods of the fishing communities and food security.

    Description: Benefit related relationship among the artisanal fisher folks of Tomho, a fishing community in Western Rural District of Sierra Leone was studied. The study was carried out to ascertain the socioeconomic activities of the target group, their level of involvement and reasons for going into transactional sexual activities. Eighty (80) structured questionnaires were administered to randomly selected fishermen and people engaged in fish related activities and this was backed up hy the record of HIV cases especially among women at tht Tombo Community Health Centre. Data collected from the interview were treated using measure of central tendency such mean and percentages and results are presented in tables and charts. Respondents age ranged between 15-65 years; sex (fishermen to fish traders) was 71.3% (female) and 28.75% (males) respectively. Marital status of respondents was single, married, divorced, seperated and widowed. Predominant religion of repondents was Islam and Christianity. The study revealed that transactional sex in the study area is mediated by economic structural and environmental factors. The study also revealed that 70.12% of documented HIV cases at the Tombo Community Health Centre were female, while 29.87% were male between the active age of 15-55 years. Fish traders (68.8%) constituted the highest carriers of HIV in the study area.

    Description: The aim of the study was to access the impact of water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes on fish catch in the lower Taylor Creek area of Bayelsa State. The experimental approach involved the division of the creek into new stations: infested and non-infested at the littoral zone. Subsequently, the deployment of six Malian traps with dimensions of 70cm diameter and 80cm height were set in each station for a period of six months using groudnut cake as bails. Furthermore, fish caught were counted and identified into families and species. From results, fish species composition obtained from the stations were a total of 9 families and 15 species. However, it was observed that the water hyacinth infested area had the lowest fish catch while the non-infestated area had the highest number of fish catch for both dry and wet season. It is therefore concluded that the invasion of Eichhornia crassipes impacted on fish population and composition.

    Description: The study was conducted to assess the levels of heavy metals in water and the flesh of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Water and tilapia were sampled for a period of 12 months from October, 2003-september 2004. Water and muscle tissue were analysed for Cu, Cr, pb, and Zn using flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The assessment showed Cr (3.35mg/l), Cu (0.75mg/l), pb (0.81mg/l) in water while Cr(2.27mg/kg) and pb (0.27mg/kg) were found to be high in the tissue samples and were above the values recommended by WHO and the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO)of the United Nations and therefore not safe for human consumption.

    Description: One of the priority research projects of the Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR) is broodstock development and mass propagation of silver catfish, Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus of which the broodstock is naturally abundant in New Gala River. Selected physical characteristics and water physico-chemical parameters of the upper reach of the New Calabar River at Aluu were investigated. The highest depth value of 9.20 m was recorded in the middle of the river. The width of the river measured during spring high tide and low tide were 174 m and 110 m respectively. The cross-sectional area and average flow velocity of the river were 797.13 m2 and 0.374 m/s respectively. The discharge of the river was computed as 298.13m3/s. The river water was acidic most of the period (Hydrogen ion concentration, pH: 5.12 to 7.43), with low total alkalinity values (4.00 to 12.00 mgCaCO3/L) and low total hardness values (11.5 to 51.2 mgCaCO3/L) which indicate that the river water is black and soft. There was significant (p~,0.05) seasonal variation in temperature (23.1 to 31.7~'C\}, Secchi transparency (9.30 to 19.00 cm), total hardness (11.5 to 51.2 mgCaCO3/L), dissolved oxygen (5.20 to 7.50 mg/L) and dissolved oxygen deficit (0.02 to 2.95mg/L). These results are useful for several stake holders who use the river as a sink for trade wastes, as source of water for fish farming, as source of broodstocks of Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus, as raw water for water treatment plants, and as means of transportation of industrial materials.

Conductivity ranged from 13.00~Ks/cm ~c 13.33 to 41.38~Ks/cm ~c 5.54. Hydrogen ion (pH) ranged from 6.69 ~c 1.03 to 8.39 ~c 1.17. Dissolved oxygen ranged from 6.39mg/l ~c 1.03 to 10.14mg/l ~c 1.17. Total alkalinity ranged from o.69mg/l ~c 0.38 1.34mb/l ~c 0.02. Total ammonia ranged from 0.20mg/l ~c 0.027 to 0.83mg/l ~c 0.05. There were various levels of correlation between these parameters. There was no significant difference between both sites and months (p〉0.05) of all the parameters except total nitrogen which show a significant difference between the sites (p〈0.05) and transparency also shows a significance between the months (p〈0.05). All physicochemical parameters were almost within the tolerable limits for supporting aquatic life.

    Description: Molecular technique based on Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis was applied to study genetic status among tilapia species from Badore landing site of Lekki lagoon. Individual variations within species population were assessed using PCR-RAP analysis with five Operon primers (OPC04, OPA02, OPB08, OPE02 and OPF03, Operon Technologies Inc, USA) which revealed dif ferent banding patterns of varying primer reproducibility. Graphical representation using UPGMA cluster analysis produced a dendrogram chart with five clusters (~f, ~e, ~p ,~S, and ~W) indicating different degrees of variations and similarities. There were various levels of genetic similarity observed possibly due to hybridization. Nevertheless, few distinct variations among the samples were visible, show ing possible genetic variability. At 0.89 (89%) coefficient, cluster,~f is made up of 7 samples which are genetically similar. At 0.834 (83.1 %) coefficient, distinct sample BTl2 forms a cluster (~p) with cluster ~f which shows they are related at this coefficient. Cluster ~W (84% coefficient) comprising of 7 samples forms another cluster with a distinct sample BT06 at about 0.79 coefficients. At 78.6% coefficient (cluster ~e). All the samples are genetically similar except sample BT17. This distinct sample can increase genetic variability by a cross between it and other strains of tilapia. Therefore, care should be taken by fish farmers who buy or use the fish samples from this landing site for culture. Proper molecular characterization of this fish species before culture becomes necessary to avoid genetic problems.

    Description: A study of fish species abundance of Otammiri River, Owerri, Nigeria was conducted from April to August, 2012. Four hundred and three (403)fishes belonging to 10 families, 16 genera and 21 species were collected from artisanal fishers using various fishing gears. The fish samples were taken to laboratory, identified, counted and their weights and lengths measured. The unnamed cichlid species ranked highest in percentage number and weight as well as Index of Preponderance (38.7%, 33.6% and 51.1% respectively), while the least were Polycentropis abbreviata, Hepsetus odoe, Synodontis omias, Chrysichthys aluensis and Chrysichthys furcatus each constituting 0.2% of the total number of fish collected. Among fish families, Cichlidae ranked highest in percentage number (82.63%) and weight (81.2%), followed by Hepsetidae (5. 7% and 8.0%) and Anabantidae (4.47% and 2.8% respectively). The least were Characidae, Notopteridae and Mochokidae. The presence of an unnamed fish species in the river is an indication that there could be more unknown aquatic living resources with strong potential benefits to the River. The information provided in this study reflects the potential of the fish resources of Otammiri. This will serve as invaluable baseline tool in fisheries management planning and policy formulations that will enhance the development of fisheries in the area.

    Description: The estuarine catfish, Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus, is a prized food fish in Nigeria especially in the Niger Delta region. There is a growing concernrn over the sustainability of the fishery in the face of climate change and environmental variability. Studies were conducted on the fecundity, gonadosomatic index and the spawning period of the species. The objectives were to determine the average fecundity of the species and to use the gonadosomatic index to determine its spawning period with the aim of proffering management advice and prerequisites of the species in the face of climate change. A total of 44 females and 40 males were used for the study which spanned the period from May 2011 to April 2012. The fecundity of the species ranged from 3,730.5 eggs to 41,535.9 eggs. There was correlation between the total fecundity and fish weight (p~,01, r= 0.80, n= 44). The regression model for the relationship was expressed as fecundity = 4660.8+4.76 weight. The gonadosomatic index was highest in the month of May and dropped sharply in june signifying that spawning in Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus starts around this period. The implications of these findings in respect to sustainability of the species, and its aquaculture in the face of climate change are discussed.

    Description: Traditional fish processing technologies vary widely in terms of equipment type, size and processing efficiency in Nigeria's coastal states. This study was carried out to identify fish processing technologies and evaluate the effectiveness, energy sources and efficiency of fish smoking equipment in use in the study area. Data were collected using structured questionnaire administered between January and March, 2011 in seven fishing villages along the coastline in the lbeju-Lekki LGA, Nigeria. Major fish species being processed were identified; and the profitability of the post harvest technologies adopted was evaluated. A total of five traditional fish processing equipment were observed; and included galvanized iron sheet supported by planks 51 (46.4%); drum oven 8 (7.2%); black clay oven 24 (21.8%); red clay oven 9 (8.1%); brick kiln 5 (4.2%) and government model kiln 4 (3.5%). Generally, energy sources were fuel wood and charcoal for traditional fish processing equipment; and electricity for the government model kiln. Majority of traditional fish processors were peasant women; and three types of processing technologies were observed, including air drying (1.0%), hot smoking 169.1%); and salting and smoking (29.9%). The capacity of kilns and ovens observed ranged from 20 to 50kg daily with a price range of Nl0,000 to N50,000. Factors considered before replacement of smoking equipment by the processors were equipment ruggedness, cost and production capacity. Women's involvement in traditional fish processing was 95%; and major fish species in the value chain included Ethmalosa fimbriata, Caranx senegallus, Sardinella maderensis,Drepane africana, Cynoglossus monodis, Pseudotolithus megalensis, P. typus, Arius latiscutatus and A. mercatoris. It was observed that products of traditional fish processing industry were readily acceptable to consumers and commanded marginal market prices with optimal economic benefits to processors.

    Description: The study examined fisher folk responses to climate change in Kainji lake basin. The sample comprises of fisher folks within and New Bussa. Eighty questionnaires were administered to obtain the primary data and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistical tools. The results revealed that majority (70%) of the respondent were male, however (61.2%) of them had tertiary education. Majority (60%) of the respondents were aware of changes in climate in the area. Majority (65%) and (55%) of the respondents were involved in incidence of deforestation and charcoal production respectively. In conclusion, it was discovered that little knowledge about climate change and its effects were found among fisher folk. Therefore it recommends that sensitization workshops/lectures be done to enable the fisher folk have adequate knowledge on climate change and the implications on fisheries activities in the basin.

    Description: The paper discussed the importance of fish as a food commodity and the rich icthyofauna resources of Nigerian territorial which has not been optimally utilized to be sustainable. Among the challenges facing the fisheries subsector of Nigerian economomy apart from overfishing, poor post-harvest technology and high incidence of sea piracy is poor level of communications, public relations, restricted access to extension services especially to the rural artisanal fisherfolks/fish farmers in Nigeria . This has been identified as contributory to the increasing shortfall between demand and supply of fish in Nigeria. There is a need/or a good public image fisheries concerns. Production and marketing personnel need to respect the wishes of the consumers and have good interpersonal relationships. Communication should be a 2-way affair between the extension officers and the fisherfolks in the rural communities to be achieved. The various media that could aid better dissemination in the Fisheries subsector were highlighted. The author recommended better funding, training of extensionists and target audience, improved public sensitization of rural practitioners to fish output. There is a need for a more productive and result-oriented reform in Nigerian extension system. A unified extension is also recommended for effective extension education from the stage of production, handling, processing, transport and retailing. More conducive enabling environment should be created by the government.

    Description: The effects of two different preservative equipment-the NIOMR (Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research) kiln and local cut-drum oven-on crude protein, minerals and vitamins of C. gariepinus were studied. The fish were obtained from Africa Regional Aquaculture Centre, Aluu, Port Harcourt. Moisture, crude protein, crude fibre, crude fat and ash content were determined using standard methods. There were significant differences (P〈0.05) in the moisture and crude fiber content. The moisture content of the fish sample ranged from 2.18 to 5.98, this could be attributed to the drying methods. The crude fibre content ranged from 2.78 and shows no significant difference. The ash content of the samples ranged from 0.25- 0.6%, an indication that smoking reduces the ash content of fish. Result of the crude protein of fresh fish was 21.84 ~c 1.10 which increased to 59.53 ~c 1.88 and 35.41 ~c1.00 in NIOMR smoking kiln and local oven respectively. This means that, there was a significant different in the effects of the two dryers on crude protein. The vitamin content of both ovens showed no significant difference except in vitamin A which was significant in the fish dried with smoking kiln. There was significant different (p〈0.05) in the mineral content of the two drying equipment, this was in Sodium, Potassium and Phosphorus level of fish smoked with NIOMR smoking kiln. This result indicates that the two drying methods have varying effects on the nutritional quality of catfish, which is in favour of NIOMR kiln.

    Description: Mullet and other bony fishes are caught by beach seine in Iranian waters in Golestan, Mazandaran and Guilan provinces. In this investigation which had conducted in commercial regions during 2003-2004, we estimated catch and CPUE, species composition, length, weight, age of two species of mullet and Salmo trutta caspius; von Bertalanffy growth parameters, mortality, biomass and MSY of Liza aurata. The total recorded catch of mullet was 3870 mt and L. auratapre dominated (98.5% of total catch of mullet). CPUE of two species of mullet; L. aurata and L. salienswere 69.6 and 1.1 mt purse seine, respectively. The catch of Salmo trutta caspius was negligible (about 3.6 mt). Biomass and MSY (maximum sustainable yield) of L. aurata were estimated to be 11019.8 and 3322.6 mt, respectively.

    Description: In the years 2007-2007, 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 the exploitation of bony fishes resources (by 131 beach seines) started on 12 October but finished on 9 April, 9 April and 13 April, respectively. During these periods the total catch of bony fishes were 23537.8, 20045.5 and 18664.8 tonnes, respevtively. During these periods, kutum predominated and represented the highest proportion of total catch at 73.1, 74.0 and 66.9% , followed by golden grey mullet at 18.3, 13.9 and 18.7%, respectively. K values calculated 0.22, 0.15 and 0.14 year-1 and L∞ were 66.0, 62.7 and 70.0 cm for kuttum, golden grey mullet and common carp, respectively. The instantaneous coefficient natural mortality were estimated as 0.386 and 0.35 year-1 for kutum and golden grey mullet, respectively. During three periods, the exploitation rates were 0.789, 0.584 and 0.614 for kutum and 0.71, 0.75 and 0.61 for golden grey mullet, respectively. In the years 2007-2007, 2008-2009 and 2009-2010, the total biomass, from the biomass-based cohort analysis were 56600, 62090 and 61590 tonnes for kutum and and MSY estimated about 24733.7 and 8550.4 tones for kuttum and 11040, 11900 and 14460 tonnes for golden grey mullet, respectively. The ABC (acceptable biological catch) were estimated as 8000 and 2200 tonnes.

    Description: The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different doses of gamma rays on shelf life and fatty acids composition of Rainbow trout fillet (Oncorhynchus mykiss) during refrigerating condition. Quality and shelf life of non-irradiated and irradiated (0, 0.75, 1.5, 2.25, 3, 3.75 and 4.5 kGy) Rainbow trout stored at +4 C was investigated by measurement of microbiological, chemical and sensory analysis .Irradiation of fillets was performed by gamma rays from a Co60 source. Microbial counts for non-irradiated trout fillet samples were higher than respective irradiated fish. Total volatile base nitrogen (TVB-N) values was increased from 7 mg/100 g for non-irradiated to 52.7 mg/100 g after 15 days storage at refrigerator, whereas for irradiated fish lower values of 39.4, 37.6, 28.7, 25.6, 24.8 and 23.2 mg/100 g were recorded at 0.75, 1.5, 2.25, 3, 3.75 and 4.5 kGy, respectively (day 15).initial amount of peroxide value in non irradiated sampleswas 0.8 meq/kg and was increased to 7 meq/kg (7 day).Highest amount of peroxide after irradiation process was belonged to samples irradiated by 4.5 kGy (1.5 meq/kg). Also, total viable count of irradiated samples were decreased significantly (p〈0.05). On nutritional aspect, results showed that total saturated fatty acid concentrations increased significantly (p〈0.001) with increasing irradiation dose , so that the control sample and fish muscles that irradiated with 4.5 kGy had the lowest and highest amounts of total saturated fatty acids (20.454 ± 0.011% and 19.228 ± 0.040% , respectively). The amount of total polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in irradiated samples were significantly lower than control sample (p〈0.001) and amounts of total monounsaturated (MUFAs) were significantly higher than control samples (p〈0.001). The results were indicated that the highest content of MUFAs and PUFAs were in samples irradiated with 3.75kGy (37.783± 0.092 %) and control samples (37.677± 0.104 %), respectively .The lowest level of MUFAs and PUFAs were in control samples (36.596 ± 0.024%) and 4.5 kGy (36.459 ± 0.047%), respectively. Altogether, results of this study were determined that irradiation treatment changes significantly the fatty acid composition especially polyunsaturated fatty acids in rainbow trout muscle (P〈0.001). Overall, irradiation of fillet by 3.75 kGy had best results on increasing shelf life of fillet at refrigerator (between 11-15 days) and had no advers effect on fatty acid composition of Rainbo trout fillet.

    Description: Due to lack of access to comprehensive and up-to-date information regarding equipment, personnel, laboratory services tariffs and chemicals in the laboratories of Iran Fisheries Research Institute and felt the necessity of having this information for optimal management of the laboratories, it was decided with regard to all information needs in this area and using previous experiences in this regard as well as the experiences of other institutions and related organizations at the national (and even international) level, the system would be designed. The main purpose of implementing this plan was to establish and implement a software system based on web technology to create a comprehensive database of the Fisheries Research Institute's laboratories, so that in addition to organizing information, using periodic reports on various related areas a more appropriate monitoring and management system could be applied. Fortunately, after the design and implementation stages, the system in early January 2011 was fully applicable. The main parts of this system include portal; database; advanced data entry, search and reporting capabilities; direct tests order system and discussion forums.

    Description: Grey mullet, Mugil cephalus is one of the most famous and valuable fish on the fisheries and aquaculture industry. This species is the most suitable to introducing the southern, northern and central regions of our country due to high resistant to large variation of water salinity and temperature. On the monthly sampling period biometric data including total length and total weight recorded and length and weight classes for every sex were determined. To understanding of physiological functions and sexual development of reproductive organs, this investigation carried out with Grey mullet imported from Hong Kong by 1993. Findings of this research can be used for management of artificial breeding of this species. Daily variation of pond water temperature was recorded. Sex steroid hormones and other plasma metabolites such as Ca^2+, cholesterol, triglycerides and total proteins were measured by blood sampling. Gonad samples were prepared in order to histological studies. Oocyte growth was studied by measurement of egg diameters. Measured values of cholesterol, triglycerides of blood plasma revealed that these metabolites have seasonal variation and severely deposited on the summer and mobilized on the spawning seasons. Findings of this research suggested that egg diameters, values of sex steroid hormones (estradiol and progesterone) and Calcium concentrations of fish blood plasma shortening increased a long with day length shortening.

    Description: This study was conducted in the Persian Gulf (Coastal waters of Khuzestan province) from March 2009 to April 2010. The 237 specimen of Silver pomfert P. argenteus collected. Maximum of mature brooders at Jun and maximum of hatched eggs obtained at same month. Artificial fertilization was successful. Absolut fecundity was between 19000 to 38000.maximum of hatch was 51 percent. Maximum of fertilization was 32 percent and continued development of larvae to 35 days. Average of fertilized eggs was 1.1 mm. newly hatched larvae were 2.2 to 2.4 mm. The all Silver Pomfret larvae were dead at prude 35 days gently. Suppose n enhancement phase wasn't performed.

    Description: Gillan , Mazandaran and Gorgan provinces have temperate climate, thus they have more potential for aquatic animal culture. There are thousands hectare of lands for Aquaculture and fisheries in adjacent to Caspian Sea in this provinces. These areas (North alborz) have provided a favorable back ground for aquatic animal breeding and stock enhancement of species in the sea. As a result, this investigation executed during two stages (phases). At first stage, the goal of this project included the feasibility study and demonstrating the existing situation of fish stock enhancement activities in North Alborz area and second phase is to survey on distribution, and production activities of stock enhancing hatcheries as well as their constructions, and production time table. Survey was started from 2006 to 2008 by using qestionaries in 7 hatcheries from tree provinces. Results reviled that there are more than 10 species was subjected to restocking .Total releasing was about 300 millions of fry and finger lings in to the Caspian sea.

    Description: In this study ichthyoplankton, phytoplankton, zooplankton, benthic and hydrochemistry parameters were studied. 9 out of 11 sampling stations were in the Gorgan Bay area and 2 of them were in the mouth of the Bay. Ichthyoplankton survey were carried out in 6 stations and the other surveys such as phytoplankton, etc were done in 11 stations in 2009. Gorgan Bay map and position of sampling sites are given at the end of material and methods section. Biomass and frequency of phytoplankton at different stations, months and seasons were calculated that are presented in Tables 1 to 3. Hydro-chemical parameters such as water temperature, air temperature, visibility, DO, BOD5, pH, Alkalinity (bicarbonate, carbonate and total), Hardness (calcium, magnesium), CL,EC, Salinity, N (nitrate, nitrite, NH_3), Phosphate were measured and results are shown Table 11. Biomass (mgr/m^3) and numbers (ind./m^3) of 47 genus of different phylum of phytoplanktons such as Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta, Pyrophyta, Chrysophyta and Euglenaphyta as well as different phylum of zooplanktons consist of Protozoa, Arthropoda, Rotifera and Cyliophora were estimated. Frequency of phytoplanktons (ind/m^3) was 131.2, 1.6, 65.3, 18.9 and 23.8 million respectively. Furthermore, their biomass was 308.4, 1.9, 1358.9, 295.1 and 124.7 mg/m^3, respectively. The maximum and minimum numbers were observed in Leptolingbaya belonged to Cyanophyta and Diatoms of Chrysophyta 84.3 and 0.025 million (ind/ m^3) respectively. The maximum and minimum biomass was observed in Gyrosigma (Chrysophyta) and Tetradron (Chloropyta), 12317.3 and 0.014 mg/m3 respectively. The average biomass of zooplankton was measured 531.74, 30.77, 225.07, and 96.26 mg/m^3 respectively and the total was attained 883.83 mg/m3 Table 5. The maximum and minimum biomass of all zooplanktons was estimated in November and July, 3446.23 and 6 mg/m^3 respectively. Furthermore, the maximum and minimum numbers of zooplanktons were found in September and July which were 48.4 and 0.002 millions respectively and the average number was 8.4 ind/m^3 Table 4. Also numbers and biomass (gr/m^2) of 11 families of benthos which inhabit Gorgan Bay such as Annelida, Mollusca and Arthropoda were investigated in separated stations and distinctive months. The maximum and minimum biomass of benthos was observed in January (42.91 gr/m^2) and March (0.6428 gr/m^2). The biomass was considerable in April, February, August and December (Tables: 4, 5 and 6).

    Description: The project of the Study on fishing and resource management of fisheries within Southern Caspian Sea was conducted on the base of an agreement made between fisheries organization (Shilat) and the Iranian fishery research organization (IFRO) signed in 2010. The study has several phases. The final report of the fishery on fishing and resource management of fisheries within Southern Caspian Sea (Gilan, Mazandaran & Golestan provinces) is consisted of several sections such as: 1- The Survey status of biology and catch of Kilka fishes , Bony fishes and Estrogen fishes and also the status of aquatic resource conservation in the Southern part of Caspian Sea 2- Fishing analysis in the Southern part of Caspian Sea 3- Fisheries development Strategies, policies and plans in the Southern part of Caspian Sea In this survey and library-based study, internal and external environmental factors of shilat activities are considered. Using SWOT analysis method, current situation of fisheries is investigated. In this regard, all fisheries activities were divided into four groups, then, the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and treats of internal and external environment will be analyzed. A considerable number of tables and matrixes were prepared and policies and strategies as seen of final report were carried out.

    Description: In a preliminary study, the antifungal properties of essential oil of Satureja hortensis at different tenderness were tested on potato – dextrose agar (PDA). The fungus Aspergillus flavus PTCC 5006 was isolated from pistachio nut obtained from Rafsanjan area, Iran. Among the essential oil compounds, 500 ppm concentration was completely inhibited Aspergillus flavus growth. After determination of the most effective concentration, it was added to fish feeds compound which inhibited fungal growth and production of aflatoxin. Its concentration was determined as 500 ppm and over of essential oil of Satureja hortensis. The essential oil of Satureja hortensis was analyzed by means of GC-MS and their effective factors were evaluated for fish feeds and their results are shown in tables.

    Description: Using SWOT analysis with traditional matrix and quantitative matrix methods, the strategies to benefit from strengths and opportunities to vanishing weaknesses and decrease of threats for strategic management of aquaculture in Iranian Northern provinces was surveyed. Utilizing researches held in fisheries research centers and existence of aquaculture experts in vicinity, activation of veterinary organization in production and post production, and entering new brood stocks with desirable growth are the main strategies for developing rainbow trout and Chinese carps culture in Iranian Northern provinces. In sturgeon fishes culture, independence of farms from fingerlings produced by governmental complex and diversification the cultured fishes using new species and hybrids can develop this part of aquaculture. Avoiding illegal fishing in sea and rivers, preserving the population of Caspian Sea fishes, entering new fish species which their resources are decreased extremely to breeding and fingerling production cycle, and using pike perch and bream while they migrate to Anzali Lagoon from Caspian Sea, instead of freshwater brood stocks will cause the output of sea enhancement and sea ranching activities to increase, and fisheries return coefficient of these fishes will rise. Using quantitative matrix and scoring method, it was defined that aquaculture in Iranian Northern provinces are extremely approved and acceptable and the score of strengths is more than weaknesses and opportunities more than threats. By using strategic management, these activities can be more developed.

    Description: In this study, first, the influence of three precooking methods (steaming, oven-baking and microwave-cooking) on the contents of mineral elements-copper, zinc, iron, calcium and sodium-of silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) was evaluated. Determination results of evaluated elements in raw fish and cooked samples were in range 3.05 to 4.19 for copper, 71.45 to 82.85 for zinc, 32.18 to 40.70 for iron, 425.6 to 529.46 and 315.5 to 534.76 for calcium. Results showed different precooking treatments had no significant effects on the amounts of mineral elements such as copper, zinc, calcium and sodium. The Iron content in the samples subjected to microwave cooking increased. With doing multivariate analysis, on comparing the raw and precooked fillets, steam cooking found to be the best precooking method on retain mineral elements. After choosing the best precooking method, for evaluating the influence of different filling media including sunflower oil, soybean oil, olive oil and brine, on the quality of canned silver carp, amounts of mineral elements(copper, zinc, iron, calcium and sodium) and microbial indices(total counts, thermopile count and clostridium) and sensory indices (color, smell, taste and texture) was surveyed. Assessments of microbial indices showed no microbial activity in canned products. After canning amounts of sodium increased in all the treatments. Except for iron, using soybean oil had no significant effect on the contents of other elements. The highest levels of iron and copper were observed in olive oil canned samples sterilized at 130°C. Sensory evaluating showed, kind of filling media had no significant effects on sensory indices such as taste, smell and color of canned samples. The texture of soybean oil canned samples and the quality defects of olive oil and brine canned samples had better condition than other treatments. In the last step, canned silver carp were proceed under three different temperatures (115°C, 120°C and 130°C) with equal lethality value (Fo=7min), then sensory indices and amount of mineral elements were compared. Results showed, the contents of iron, copper, sodium and calcium were changed in soybean oil canned sample. The amounts of copper and sodium in sunflower oil canned sample subjected to different heating regimes showed significant variation. The highest amount of copper was observed in the canned samples subjected to 130°C heating regime. Results showed contents of iron and copper of olive oil canned sample subjected to 120°C and 130°C heating regimes were higher than sample subjected to 115°C heating regime, while the zinc and calcium contents had no variation. In brine canned samples the highest amounts of copper and iron was obtained after sterilization in 120°C. Results of sensory evaluation showed different heating regimes had no significant effects on the indices of taste, smell, and color of products. Doing 130°C heating regime in brine canned samples led to obtain the better tenacity of texture. While this heating regime caused to increase the quality defects of soybean oil canned samples as a result of existence of hard parts of bone.

    Description: To accomplish the stock assessment that pre-planned for bony-fish resources investigation started by considering two pivotal act. First gathering biometric data and second using catch statistics information for stock analyses. Implementing the research programmes five itinerant groups in Anzali, Keyashahr, Noshahar, Babolsar, Torkaman have been organized during fishing season. The biometric data were supplied in computer that distincted by each fish species and subdivided into age groups. In analyses the samples, Bertalanffy formula used for calculating average length and age, also for growth coefficient. Total mortality rate calculated by using Pauly formula, and the biomass status estimated through Cohort analysis. The catch by beach seiner cooperatives recorded 8630 metric tons, but estimation including. Poacher catch raised the harvest to 15.6 thousand tons. The total catch of Kutum reduced by 1400 tons compared with previous year, but the estimation revealed the biomass of Kutum 18.5 thousand tones, the stock stowed reduction in quantity relative to past years. Harvest exceeding the limit, fishing pressure. And employing higher fishing effort, combining releasing the Kutum seedling with shorter average length in recent years, leaded the shrinkage of biomass of Kutum resources. The Golden Grey mullet catch has been estimated 3437 metric tons, the figure showed 1500 tons increment, in comparison with previous year, nearly 24% of catch was shorter than Lm50% of this species. In Guilan province higher number of sub - size golden mullet captured, this development occured less in Mazandaran and Golestan province. Higher rate of exploitation, reduction of catch in recent years, dominating small size fish in catch composition indicated the population undergoing stress in ecosystem. Thin - lipped grey mullet only comprised 9.2% of the mullet catch - Length - structure of this fish species population formed mainly by young small size fish, the biomass of latter estimated 1100 metric tons. Catch further than maximum sustainable yield, by higher exploitation rate, and gradual diminishing of harvest, represented the resources of this fish species suffering both by high fishing pressure and un - sustainable effort, which ultimately declined the fishery of this fish species. Carp catch and its resources in Anzali region become very low, it is necessary to enhance the stock by Sea-ranching programmes. The carp resources in Gorgan region enjoy better status, but catch practices do not compatible with rule and regulation in Gorgan and Gomeyshan area. The standing stock of Gorgan carp estimated nearly 6000 tons. The information concerning carp resources indicate the stock experiencing pressure and likely the catch will diminish in future. The total catal catch of carp calculated 1900 tons. In recent years the Caspian roach resources are increasing but the bulk of harvest fished illegally and by gill - nets. The total catch of the roach during 1998-1999 estimated 1700 tons. Considering the semi - artificial propagation of roach in Golestan province, if has been concluded the multiplication of this fish species also should be planned by fisheries authorities for Anzali region. It is also advisable catching of this fish species to be regulated soon and selective catch are proposed. The catch of pike - perch during the year of 1997 - 98 jumped to 95 tons, but 90% of catch formed by young fish or sub – standard length size. Almost, all the increment of catch attributed to the releasing of millions of seedlings in the Sea which the plan has been implemented by Iranian Fisheries. Increasing the numbers of released seedlings, with higher average weight Identification of most suitable site for unloading the fries could ensure better survival rate and contribute the enhancement of resources and produce good catch for this desirable fish species. The total catch of Bream hit 18 tons, but most of the catch comprised by young fish with sub - standard size. The present formation of fisheries population of bream are the result of seedling releasing! In the Sea by Iranian Fisheries, since the catch of bream are negligible despite releasing programmes of seedling in a decade which 14million individuals until now, one could conclude the programmes do not contributed effectively to stock rehabilitation. The Caspian Barbus (Barbus brachycephalus) are at the threshold 01 vanishing, at present a few numbers are caught, therefore B.capito appeared in catch composition. The catch of latter species in recent two years are increasing. Total catch during the year of 1998 - 99 estimated 34.5 tons, biomass calculated 93 tons. Caspian vimba are small size fish which beach seiner (mesh size in bosom 30 millimeters) could not capture them ideally, bulk of the catch caught in illegal manner by gill nets. The total catch estimated 154 tons which the present fishing procedures surpassed total allowable catch (136 tons). In recent years the catch of this fish species are increasing. "Shemaya' similar in size with Vimba are caught less by beach seiner, illegal catch are considerable, the total catch in 1998 - 99 estimated 86 tons. The level of harvesting of this fish species are increasing in recent years and its population size become significant relative to last years. The main part of catch concerning Aspius fish species occured in Guilan coastal area, high fishing pressure reduced the population size, including low discharge of water in rivers during spawning period, impact negatively to reproduction. Catch statistic in 1989 showed 128 tons of this fish species are caught but in 1998 - 99 it has been reduced to 6.8 tons. It has been suggested artificial spawning could prevent its fate as endangering species. Caspian salmon catch estimated 78 tons during 1998 - 99, salmon population in Caspian Sea are supported by releasing reared smolts, which in recent years nearly 500 thousands fingerlings released in suitable rivers. After banning the gill nets application in Southern Caspian Sea, the catch of salmon in beach seining are increasing. It is necessary the released smolts in rivers being protected for its safe approach to Caspian Sea. The total catch of herring fish species in 1998 - 99 were nearly 700 tons. The bulk of the catch occur In Guilan fishing area, elimination of gill - nets usage in Southern Caspian Sea contributed the increment of herrings catch in beach seining. The herring resources in Caspian Sea reduced relative to past decades. The catch during 1913 – 1916 ranged between 130 - 160 thousand tons, in Caspian Sea.

    Description: This study was conducted to determine growth parameters, catch and fishing effort trends, stock assessment and Acceptable Biological Catch (ABC) of bony fishes in the Iranian coastal waters of Caspian Sea in the years 2010-2011 and 2011-2012. According to the result, the numbers of beach seines were 131 and 128 and their fishing efforts were observed 50184 and 42255 beach seining during 2010-11 and 2011-12, respectively. The catch per unit of effort CPUE) was calculated 182.9 and 205.6 kg/haul during two sampling periods, respectively. The total catches (including illegal fishing) were also obtained 16601.5 mt and 17034.1 mt during 2010-11 and 2011-12, respectively. The highest proportion of catch was belonged to kutum and golden grey mullet (86% and 88%, respectively) in two fishing seasons aforementioned above. Growth parameters of kutum were estimated as K=0.21/yr, L_∞ = 60.0 cm, t-0 = 0/yr. The Growth parameters were K=0.18/yr, L_∞ = 61.1 cm, t-0 = -0.14/yr for golden gray mullet and were K=0.12/yr, L_∞ = 73.6 cm, t-0 = 0.92/yr for common carp. Based on catch-at-age data, in the years 2010-2011 and 2011-2012, the total biomass, from the biomass-based cohort analysis were estimated 41700mt and 34400 mt for kutum and 14600 mt and 14400 mt for golden grey mullet, respectively. The reference points of F0.1 and F35% were 0.41/yr and 0.34/yr for kutum and 0.36/yr and 0.33/yr for golden grey mullet, respectively. Stock enhancement plays an important role in recovery of kutum stocks in the Iranian coastal waters of Caspian Sea. There is a significantly negative correlation between fingerlings released and condition factor (CF) and recruitment and CF. The different trends for fingerlings, recruitments and CF suggest that CF may be partly density-dependent, declining at high population sizes due to intra-specific competition. Therefore, more research should be conducted to determine the desirable level of artificial propagation. Food consumed by fish species, Rutilus frisii kutum, Rutilus rutilus caspicus, Cyprinus carpio, Liza auratus and Liza saliens were included Foraminifera, Porifera, Annelida, Mollusca, Arthropoda, filamentous algae, fish eggs and detritus.The results showed that Rutilusfrisii kutum generally feed on Balanus and Cerastorderma. The main food item for Cyprinuscarpio, Liza auratus and Liza salienswas detritus. Based on available models, the ABCs were estimated as 6600-7400 mt for kutum and 2200-2800 mt for golden grey mullet (with precautionary approach 6600 mt and 2200 mt for kutum and mullet, respectively) in 2011-12. Two species (kutum and golden grey mullet) are vulnerable to environmental factors, and these factors should be considered in the stock assessment and management of the fish. For two species, the ABC with a lower andmore accurate value based onmore information, should be selectedfor the implementation of a precautionary management approach.

    Description: The aim of this study to investigate the antioxidant potential of ethanolic extract of Rosmary(Rosmarinusofficinalis) and Thyme (Zatariamultiflora) on fatty acids stability and shelf life of frozen minced silver carp fish(Hypophtalmictysmolitirix). Treatments include frozen meat in conventional packaging (control), frozen minced fish+200 ppm thyme(treatment 1), frozen meat+200 ppm rosemary (T2), frozen meat + rosemary (100 ppm) and thyme (100 ppm)(T3). Treatments packed in polyethylene bags and were freezed at -36°C by spiral freezer and IQF method, then were transferred to freezer to keep at -36°C during the storage. Treatments were analyzed for 10 days intervals in the First month and 15 days intervals in the second month of storage. In the next few months, treatments were analyzed once a month. In this study, various levels of both saturated and unsaturated fatty acids in the three treatments and control treatment were identified. The results showed that Keeping of Minced Fish containing thyme and rosemary extract in freezing conditions led to stability of fatty acids (MUFA, PUFA, omega- 3 and omega-6) and the changes in fatty acid oxidation during storage is not significantly. The profile of fatty acids and their related indicators results as well as statistical tests showed that treatments containing rosemary extract were more stable (-18°C) in comparison with the control and other treatments during frozen condition. Also these teratmentshad less oleic acid and linoleic acid , ά-linolenic and palmitic acid in compared with others .more According to the results treated minced meat with rosemary extract was kept the quality for six months and more.

    Description: The aim of this research was to identify the species of freshwater fishes in the water rssoureces located at Urmieh Lake and Zagros catchment area of West Azarbaiigan Province. Sampling was done seasonally with the determination and selection of sampling station on main and secondary branches of different rivers including; Zarineh rud, Simineh rud, Mahabad chay, Shahr chay, Nazlu chay, Baranduz chay, Godar and Zab river. Fish samples catched with different tools include Electroshoker, Cast net and buy from local fisherman, fixed in 10 % formalin and transferred to the laboratory for biological and identify hnvestigation. 42 fish species belonging to 7 family comprising of Syprinidae, Balitoridae, Cobitidae, Siluridae, Poeciliidae, Salmonidae and Mastacembelidae have been identified. Among them Syprinidae family with 32 species had a highest diversity.

    Description: Artificial reefs are manmade materials deployed under water in order to improve environment and increase the exploitation of fishing area. Usage of artificial technic has developed due to increase of world population and need to supply of protein, aim to restoring of natural specially rehabilitation of demersal fishes. It has effected to increase the production in order sustainable exploitation. Coasts and Islands have destruction due to over harvesting from ecosystems and other activities by humans and natural, these caused many aquatic as demersal fishes has endangered in Persian Gulf and Oman Sea. The artificial reef is one way or method that can improve the environment and restore the aquatic. Iranian fisheries has established an artificial reefs area in west of Kish Island. This area has studied during one year, Data of assembled fishes and physical sampling were collected in seasonal during spring, summer, autumn and wintered. There were tow treatment for sampling as artificial reefs site and a control site. Collected data has analyzed and evaluated by SPSS and Exel. The results showed that there was significant difference between the sites and assembled fishes in artificial reefs were more than control site. Consequently the artificial reefs can be a tool and technic to improve the marine environment and increase the production of fishes, especially the demersal fishes.

    Description: 360 funnel traps were prepared as 30 in one row. They were bitted and located in different depths in sampling sites. Two rows each composed of 30 traps were located by stone, linking rope and boat with 50 m distance in sampling stations. The results showed that the average of total length of caught crayfish was 106.26±12.89 mm and their mean weight was 38.79 ± 15.54 gr. The largest crayfish had 171 mm length and 216 g weight. Also mean of total CPUE was 9.72±4.49 individuals in the study period. The evaluation by Schnabel approach indicated that fluctuation range of freshwater crayfish biomass with more than 120mm length was 131-313 with an average of 212.59 ±30.23 kilograms per ha. In this study freshwater crayfish biomass with more than 120mm length was 247 × 10^3 kilograms. The Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) was estimated 83 × 10^3 kilograms. In this study ّFecundity and biometry of crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus) was investigated during 2012-2013. The results showed that the average of total length of caught crayfish was 106.26±12.89 mm and their mean weight was 38.79 ± 15.54 gr. The largest crayfish had 171 mm length and 216 g weight. Mean number of ovarian and pleopodal eggs were estimated at 286 ± 82 and 246.31 ± 80.41 eggs (with 95% confidence limits), respectively. In this research, male to female ratio was obtained 1.21:1. The time of male moulting at 16°C was started from April and was ended in the late May, when the water temperature reached to 18° C. The second moulting of males and the first moulting of females was performed simultaneously in 18°C water temperature at September. Reproduction of freshwater crayfish was started from November and continued to May of the next year. Harvesting period was from May to late November.

    Description: This study was aimed to investigate the effect of different doses of oral diethylstilbestrol (DES) on feminization of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) larvae under the condition of brackish water in Bafgh fisheries research center. This Experiment was comprised of two control groups in two replicates and two experimental ones in three replicates. At the beginning of the trial, a number of 2150 larvae were randomly distributed among 10 replicates that were under treatment for 45 days. The diets in two control groups, i.e. non-treated, C1, and ethanol treated feed, C2, and the ones in two experimental groups, i.e. 200 and 400 mg DES/k of feed, E1 and E2, were administrated to 7 day post fertilization (dpf) larvae for a period of 35 days and then until day 45, the larvae were fed with ordinary feed. At the end of the trial, the gender ratio of larvae in different groups was determined by squash test in 50 randomly selected individuals from each replicate. The results showed no significant differences for gender ratios within control groups (respective male to female ratio in C1 and C2 was 47:53 and 57:43). However, the corresponding ratios within experimental ones, fed with 200 and 400 mg DES/k of feed respectively, was significantly different (P〈0.05). Noteworthy that the percent of females between two experimental groups (E1 and E2) was not significantly different (70.0 and 64.7 respectively) but it was significantly different with ratios in experimental groups (P〈0.05). The total body length and live body weight were determined at the begging and then at day 30 and 45, it was randomly measured in 20 larvae from each replicate. At the beginning of the experiment, the mean body weight and total length of larvae was 0.012 gram and 1.03 centimeter respectively. The respective averages at day 30 and 45 were significantly different among groups (P〈0.05). Survival rate was significantly different among groups (P〈0.05), being highest in E1 and E2 respectively whereas lowest in control ones (56.51 and 58.84 in C1 and C2 respectively).

    Description: Trimming means is cutting fillet for a better shape, packing and marketing. The objective of this study was comparing trimming by hand and machinery from Silver Carp fillet. The aims of this project introduce best type of fillet trimming and machine for Silver Carp fillet. For first time we measured percentage different organs like head , skin, tails, intestine organs , type of bone and fillet in whole fish before and after cutting , filleting and trimming . The results show percentage of waste in trimming by machinery line processing was less than handing, and fillet trimming speed by hand was most than machinery. Also final results of this study show machinery method or complex of handing and machinery for Silver Carp fillet trimming are best.

    Description: Barcodes are short segments of DNA that can be used to uniquely identify an unknown specimen to species, particularly when diagnostic morphological features are absent. These sequences could offer a new forensic tool in plant and animal conservation especially for endangered species. Ideally, barcodes could be used to positively identify illegally obtained material even in cases where diagnostic features have been purposefully removed or to release confiscated organisms into the proper breeding population. In the present study molecular data were used besides the morphological ones to introduce a specific barcode for six selected species of Shrimp. Based on the previous phylogenetics study, it has been proved that the mitochondrial COI gene in crustacean is a good discriminative marker at both inter- and intra-specific levels. In this regard, six species of shrimp (Fenoro penaeus indicus, Fenoro penaeus merguensis, penaeus semisulcatus, Metapenaeus affinis, Marsupenaeus japonicas, Fenoro penaeus penicillatus were collected from the Persian Gulf and Oman sea. After identification, the total DNA was extracted; COI gene was first amplified and then sequenced for each species. Finally the collected data were analyzed with the specific phylogenetic software. Molecular analysis revealed some degree of interpopulation differences but six good species were recognizable based on COI sequences. Also for population study molecular data of two species Penaeus semisulcatus and Metapenaeus affinis were analysed base on COI RFLP and 16SrRNA sequences respectively. The results would be helpful to protect shrimp species.

    Description: Nisin is a natural antimicrobial and has inhibitory effect on the pathogens and spoilage organisms. The efficiency of nisin reduced after reaction with food compounds. There is the hypothesis that combination of nisin with organic salt increases the shelf life of fish. The purpose of this study was mainly to evaluate the effects of nisin (0.15 %) and sodium acetate ( 1% ) individually and in combination on shelf life of fillets and whole trout ( without viscera). then, the behavior of Listeria monocytogenes and Clostridium botulinum type E were evaluated in different time at 40C. Physical and chemical parameters including: pH, Peroxide Value (PV), Tiobarbithoric Acid (TBA) and Total Volatile Nitrogen (TVN) and bacterial factors such as Total Viable Count (TVC), Pscycrothophic Count (PTC) and Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) were examined. These parameters were done at intervals of 4 days for 16 days. Results showed that chemical and bacterial factors of whole trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) (without viscera) have been more favorable than the fillets . It also showed that the peroxide value, the thiobarbituric acid, volatile nitrogen bases, and pH in combination of sodium acetate and nisin Z treatments were exposed to significantly compared to control treatments (no preservatives) (P〈0.05). Treatments with sodium acetate and nisin Z (individual) were exist after combination treatment. Hence it can be concluded that the maximum shelf life of in preservative treatments was 16 days, but control treatment was 12 days in some cases and in some cases 16 days. Effects of treatments on Listeria monocytogenes and Clostridium botulinum in the control treatment showed the highest growth was observed in both species (log 8) but in single and combined treatment of bacterial growth slower , but is still the trend the 16th day of so Listeria and Clostridium log 5 to log 6, respectively. Vegetative cells of Clostridium were more sensitive in compare to Listeria. When using preservatives (chemical or biological) in fish tissue, parameters such as the type of preservative, used method, pH, proteolytic enzymes, and the incidence of resistant strains and so on influence of antimicrobial agents used. The overall conclusion of the study was shelf life of whole trout (without viscera) was more than fillets, combination of nisin and sodium acetate were better than other treatment and finally higher doses of bilogival preservatives are need to for achieve to significant reduction of pathogenic bacteria.

    Description: Black Mouth Croaker (Atrobucca nibe) is of significant value from the economics point of view. In the following study, the genetic diversity of Atrobucca nibe has been investigated using the PCR-sequencing method from three different regions of the Persian gulf and Oman Sea, namely Chabahar in the Sistan and Baluchestan and Jask in Hormozgan Province of Iran and Fujairah in the Fujairah Emirate of the United Arab of Emirates. The purpose of the following exploration has essentially beencoined to further the study of Atrobucca nibe genetic diversity and its population structure in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea. For this purpose, a number of 54 fish have been collected from the aforementioned regions. The DNA of the fish had been extracted through the Ammonium Acetate method and the quality of the DNAs were analyzed via the spectrophotometry and furthermore the quantity of the extracted DNA were assessed viaelectrophoresis. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) was conducted on the targeted DNAs and thenceforth DNA sequencing was carried out. Subsequently, through sequencing it was discovered that the D-loop region in the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) of Black Mouth Croaker,contained 270 base pairs (bp). For the purpose of analyzing the genetic diversity of Atrobucca nibe and its population structure in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea, the following softwares have been conducted, namely theBioEdit, Arlequin, Dnasp and Mega5 software. Furthermore, the Kimura 2-parameter was used for the purpose of genetic distance analysis. Through observations of average levels of FST between the regions, it can be summed up that genetic differences do exist among the present populations. On the grounds of the obtained results from the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea, it can be concluded that there currently are three different populations of Atrobucca nibe residing in the waters of Sistan & Baluchestan, Hormozgan and Fujairah.

    Description: Carp fishes culture is one of the most important subsector fisheries industry in Khouzestan province. Every year in summer high mortality occurred in carp fishes farms specially in silver carp of north Khouzestan province. Inspection of silver carp for identification microorganisms agents (Bacteria, Fungi, Parasite and virus: SVC,KHV), determine total plate count, examination physic chemical factors of farms water, histopathology, identification planktons, the main objectives of this study, which was held in 2012. 180 silver carp from 5 farms (10 ponds) with high mortality in years ago were collected in north Khouzestan province and then differents parts of fish body including: intestine, gills, body surface, eyes and liver were examined. Physico chemical parameters and plankton sampled monthly. Physico chemical parameters of water were measured all over culture period for 960 times as follows: Do(4.45-8.5 ppm), BOD5(1.1-9.25 ppm), temp(19-33c), pH(6.82-8.6), total hardness(348-10053), turbidity(5-56 FTU), Amonia(0.001- 0.06 ppm) and co2( 0.88-13.2). From a total 180 fish examined, 136 (75%) showed unknown algae infestation and 126 (70%) showed parasitic (Dactylogyrus, Gyrodactylus and metacercaria Diplostomum). The results of biotic parameters in farms showed that cyanophycae (Cylindropermopsis, Merismopedia and Nitzeshia) were the most group of phytoplanktons. Histopathological studies have shown necrosis in tobules kidney, degeneration hepatocyte and hyperplasia in gill cells and also results demonstrated the mean of total plate count (0-376 CFU/ml103). 60 samples with sighn severe hemorrhagic on surface body were collected for virology studies by PCR procedure (IQ2000 kit) and have shown which 3 sample suspected to KHV but SVC was not identified.

    Description: The lack of sustainable management programs has resulted in the drastic decline of sturgeons stocks in the Caspian Sea in the past two decades. Legal catch quotas for all Caspian littoral states has dropped from 28500 tons in 1985 to 460 tons in 2007 while caviar production in the Caspian Sea during the same period decreased from 3000 tons to 70 tons. Caviar production in the I.R. of Iran dropped from 305 tons in 1985 to about 11 tons in 2007. The "Strategic and applied research planning for sturgeon management and conservation" was developed with the collaboration of academicians from universities, researchers, experts, fishery authorities and representatives of the executive government to maintain sustainable development and rational management of sturgeon stocks in the Caspian Sea. The preparation and development of this planning was carried out through 121 sessions (2100 person hours) A comprehensive report (375 pg) was prepared which was divided into five volumes; Volume I comprises an introduction, objectives, strategies and planning, present status of production and caviar harvest, catch and export quotas, revenue generated and release of sturgeon fingerlings, Volume II comprises analysis of the problem by constructing a problem tree with 8 broad categories to analyze 344 problems and an objective tree which is the hierarchic flowchart of objectives with 9 broad categories with 241 items, Volume III comprises a review and analysis of previous and ongoing research (414 projects) on different aspects of sturgeon during the past 40 years, Volume IV comprises prioritizing research objectives outlined by the objective tree and finally Volume V which prioritizes primary objectives for 14 executive and 10 research programs. On the basis of the evaluation of the present status and for the sustainable development and rational management of sturgeon stocks a strategic and applied research planning program was proposed and developed within the framework of three primary objectives; 1) Management and sustainable use of Caspian Sea resources (5 programs), 2) Rehabilitation and restoration of stocks (5 programs), 3) Development of aquaculture (4 programs). The applied research program for each proposed executive program was outlined in 10 programs, 42 comprehensive plans and 222 projects. The primary objective on management and sustainable use of Caspian Sea resources includes 5 programs, 14 comprehensive plans and 63 projects, while the primary objective on rehabilitation and restoration of stocks includes 4 programs, 16 comprehensive plans and 87 projects. The primary objective to address sturgeon aquaculture includes 1 program, 12 comprehensive plans and 72 projects. The impacts and outcome of each of these programs was determined and presented. It is evident that if the present situation persists, the catch figures for adult sturgeon specimens and caviar production in Iran will reach zero in 2021. But if concerted efforts are taken and the proposed strategic and applied research planning program is executed (commencing from 2009) we can put a halt to these declining trends. By producing sturgeon fingerlings to restore population abundances, by conserving and protecting them in the Caspian Sea and by conducting applied research we can produce 206.4 tons of caviar by the year 2033. Apart from harvesting caviar from the Caspian Sea we can also annually produce 3000 tons sturgeon meat and 60 tons farmed caviar starting from the year 2023. The total budget proposed for implementation of this program for a period of 14 years (2008-2022) is USD 2483 million. If this budget is allocated in time and the proposed strategic program is properly and totally implemented, we can not only save many sturgeon populations from extinction but also ensure job opportunities for 6000 fisherman, provide 1480 new job opportunities and annually produce 266 tons of caviar which will generate USD 4957 million.

    Description: Regarding the natural potential and socio-economic advantages of aquaculture development, extension of aquaculture has been raised as one of the priorities of the second to fifth national programs of the Islamic Republic of Ira in the fisheries sector in the past ten years. Proliferation and aquaculture development also plays an important role in increasing employment, exportation, and rural development in rural areas. Although the physical capacities of aquaculture development may be clear, it is necessary to analyze the profitability of farmers and fish market as well. In recent years, reproduction and breeding of new species, in order to increase the income of farmers, have been put on the agenda of the Fisheries Research Institute. In order to increase the maximum utilization of production capacity and increase the warm water pond valume per unit area of land, three species of Indian carp has been imported. The main problems of aquaculture economical research include inadequate information and lack of the collaboration between different experts and aquaculture farmers. The objective of the research was to survey of economical aspects for culturing the imported Indian carp. The fingerlings of the imported species were transferred to the target centers, Southern aquaculture Research institute and Inland waters Aquaculture Research institute. The experiment was carried out as three treatments in triplicates for 9 months. To determine the cost of production and the share of the cost of production factors for farmed fish carp, including the cost of labor, cost of fingerlings, feed and fertilizer costs, maintenance costs, energy costs, depreciation of structures, equipment and buildings for administrative and other costs; past experiences, information and other resources and external experiences questionnaire was employed.

    Description: In this study shelflife of whole hot smocked common kilka (Clupeonella cultriventris) fish packed in usual, vacuum and MAP packages and stored 6 weeks at refrigerator and or frozen temperatures was studied. Samples were analysed for TVBN, PV, pH, TBA, and total count, coliforms, clostridia, psychrophile, mold and sensory attributes weekly and monthly respectively. The ratio of Co2, N2 and O2 in the MAP package was 5: 55: 40%. Results indicated that the mixture gases could decline microbial growth and chemical changes during storage. Microbial and chemical changes in control samples were greater than that found for other samples. No significant microbial and chemical changes was observed in frozen samples during 6 weeks storage except for PV . Samples had the same sensory attributes just after production but were changed during storage significantly. Shelflife of samples packed in usual and MAP packages and stored at referigeratore was 21 and 35 days respectively; while it was 3 and 5 months for frozen samples packed in usual and vacuum packages. The conclusion is that packing hot smocked Kilka fish in vacuum and MAP packages can increase shelflife and decrease economical loss due to fish spoilage.

The benefits of fish patty are the most of fresh fish, good use of raw materials, availability of several species of fish in the product, socio-economic benefits for fishermen and fishing industry, product nutritional value and high in protein rejection. Fish Protein Concentrate is a healthy food products, durable and of high nutritional value of fish and hygienic manner in which the protein and other nutrients found in fresh fish and more compact than the long-term maintenance and diverse the second is for the production of food products. The study aimed at producing FPC type A string of fish, fish cakes prepared by the FPC obtained and reviewed the nutritional value, acceptance and endurance cookies generated at room temperature for one month . After examination of the nutritional value, shelf-life tests using factors of corruption, TVB-N, pH, TBArs and sensory tests showed that the most important indicator of the value of food, especially protein product treatments with better FPC and the factors corruption is not much difference between 5% FPC and blank treatment. The final product is important in terms of nutritional value and shelf life, group 2 has a significant difference with other treatments and the final product can be made on the basis of treatment 2.

    Description: A 2.14 M length overall (LOA) flat bottom modern canoe (Sampan), was designed and constructed using locally available materials. The canoe features include easy construction, portability, least cost, light weight, shallow draft, and easy maneuverability. The light displacement (weight empty) was 25kg, which was less than local canoe of same size. When placed on water a draft of 5.5cm. The capacity of the canoe was 200kg, and the total production cost of N10, 000.00, ($67) which was not beyond the reach of an average fisher folks, or any fish farmer. The canoe was easily maneuvered when propelled by paddling as it floated at a shallow draft; this makes the canoe adequate for use on shallow water bodies such as ponds and reservoirs. The craft, because of its easy maneuverability, can also be used on shallow water bodies for recreational activities such as, sport fishing and canoeing.

    Description: Diet of the juvenile Gorean snapper, Lutjanus goreensis from Five Cowrie Creek was investigated between April 2008 and January 2009. Analyses of 184 specimens by numerical (NO), frequency of occurrence (FO) and geometric index of importance (GII) methods, respectively revealed a moderately high proportion (47.83%) of stomachs with food or prey. Shrimps and crabs constituted more than 80 % of total prey items. Other dietary components included lobsters, stomatopods, whole fish and fish parts. Similarly, analysis of diet composition by size - groups also indicated a predominance of the shrimps and crabs over all other prey items. In conclusion, L. goreensis can be described as a top-level carnivore feeding almost exclusively on epibenthic crustaceans in the juvenile stage.

    Description: The fin fish assemblage of Ikere gorge was investigated. The fin fishes comprised a total of 34 species belonging to 13 families. Chrysicthys nigrodigitatus was most abundant and highest in biomass (69,198.33 kg) accounting for 34.65% of the catch. Synodontis nigrita, Malapterurus electricus, Marcusenius psittacus Gnathonemus sensgalensis and Gnathonemus cyprinoides were the least in number, while Phago loricatus was least in biomass (20.00 kg) accounting for 0.01%.The major aim was to assess the fish resources of the gorge and evaluate the water parameters as related to fish production. No significant difference was observed in dissolved oxygen, nitrate, phosphate, water temperature, conductivity, alkalinity, total dissolved solid and pH range value in the stations. The water quality parameters were favourable for fish production. Water level and temperature were observed to guarantee high fish yield in the gorge.

    Description: An assessment of the fish species composition in Lake Kivu Rwanda, East Africa was carried out between February 2005 and December 2006. Fish samples and statistics of average daily catches were collected from the organized fishermen cooperatives societies in Gisenyi, Kibuye and Cyangugu. Fish samples were identified on the basis of existing photographs and standard identification keys. Ten (10) fish species belonging to four families (Clupeidae, Cyprinidae, Clariidae and Cichlidae) were identified with Limnothrisa miodon (57.1%), Haplochromis spp. (17.1%), Tilapia rendalli (9.9%) and Oreochromis niloticus (9.5%) being the dominant ones.

    Description: An aspect of artisanal fisheries of Oramiri-Ukwa River was studied for 6 months from January to June 2008, to get the base-line information on the artisanal fisheries of Oramiri-Ukwa River and appraise the Ichthyo-fauna of the river and their monthly distribution. Data collected was subjected to Simpson’s index, Shannon-Weiner index and Marglefs’ index analysis. The Ichthyofauna community was composed of 30 species representing 16 families with Cichlidae having the highest number of species. Nineteen (19) species were present in both wet and dry season. Wet season recorded more species than Dry season with 52.1% and 47.9% respectively. General diversity value of 0.856 (dry) and 0.672 (wet) was observed.     Description: Information on the fish consumption pattern of the residents of Njala community, Moyanba district, Sierra Leone is rare. Njala is a University community closely annexed by Mokonde village. This study was carried out using structured questionnaires to investigate the fish consumption pattern of the people of the community. The questionnaires were delivered by hand to randomly selected members of the community. 90 respondents comprising 40 males and 50 females were sampled. The respondents composed of 22.2% academics, 8.89% farmers, 14.4% sales persons, 2.22% bank workers, 1.11% police staff, 33.3% dependents, and 1.11% civil servants. 16.7% of the respondents did not indicate their work category. The ages of respondents were between 10 ? 70 years. The results generated showed that 98.9% of the respondents eat one type of fish or the other while 1.11% does not eat fish. Average money spent by respondents ranged from Le 2000 ? Le 10,000. However 48.9% of the respondents spend more than Le 10,000 weekly. Consumption pattern seems to be proportional to income of respondents. Poverty and starvation is pronounced in the study area and this probably accounted for the low consumption of protein-based food especially fish.     Description: Based on personal working relationship with artisan fishers in the southern portion of Lake Kainji, North Western Nigeria, a new fishing pot trap made with polyvinyl chloride pipe material was designed, fabricated and its performance evaluated by comparison with the traditional Malian trap. The aim was to have a fishing pot trap that is long-lasting and be at least as effective as the Malian trap in fish catch. The results of the study revealed the advantages and limitations in the design and mode of operation of each of the trap type and recommended areas of improvement. Data collected on fish diversity, number and weight were subjected to descriptive statistics and Student’s t-test. The results showed that nineteen fish species belonging to ten families were caught. While the same species density index (SDI) of 0.84 was recorded for both traps, there was no significant difference (P〉0.05) in the catch by number and weight of the two traps.

    Description: Quality deterioration (microbial load) of smoked white catfish (Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus) from Ekeonunwa market Imo state Nigeria, was studied for six weeks. The experimental fish was divided into two batches. One batch of 18 fishes with average weight of 700g was resmoked weekly at 75oC. the second batch of 18 fishes weighing an average of 750g was left unresmoked. Weekly samples of both unresmoked and resmoked fish were taken from different regions (body flanks, gill and gut) and analyzed in the laboratory. Total plate counts (TPC) for the bacterial organisms in both resmoked and unresmoked samples (Table III) ranging between 1.56 105 and TNTC ( too numereous to count) exceeded the range of specified microbiological limits recommended for fish and fishery products by ICMSF (1986). Pathogenic organisms isolated included Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Lysteria monocytogenes, Bacillus cereus, Aspergillus flavus, Penicillium varrucossum, Yeast and Mucor. Both unresmoked and resmoked fish specimens were contaminated with these spoilage microbes, but the microbial load of the resmoked samples were less than those of the unresmoked samples. Resmoking beneficially reduces microbial load of stored fish, increases the shelf/storage life, but can not totally eliminate pathogens. The presence of pathogens raises a public health concern.

    Description: Mudskippers are a delicacy in some fishing communities of Rivers State, public perception of mudskipper consumption were determined in these areas. 120 structured questionnaires were randomly distributed in ten communities spread across three local governments. The results of the survey showed that consumption of mudskipper was more popular among the old people than the younger ones. A greater number of people 82.50% considered mudskipper as fish, 10% as nuisance, 4.17% as snake and 3.32% as pest. Also, 83.33% of the respondents were favourably disposed towards mudskipper 15.0% were negative and 1.67% were indifferent. The study revealed that there is no taboo in the consumption of mudskipper in these area, any perceptions was observed personal to individual and not a communal affair.

    Description: Major sections (head, trunk and tail) of six fish species from the Warri River were measured in order to determine which was the largest and most fleshy. Besides Ethmalosa fimbriata (37.31%) the trunk length was over 40% of the standard length in the fish species. Based on the length and breadth the trunk was larger than the tail and head in all species and could be the bulkiest and most fleshy region.     Description: Preliminary studies on the antimicrobial properties of various methods of extraction of Carica papaya (Pawpaw) seeds, Citrus paradisa (Grapefruit peel) and Piper guineese (Black pepper) seeds against eleven bacteria ( Proteus mirabilis, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Acinetobacter sp, Klebsiella pneumoniae, K. oxytoca, Pseudomonas lundensis, Bacillus subtilis, B. megaterium, Citrobacter freundii and Enterobacter cloacae) associated with fresh catfish spoilage were investigated using the cup-plate diffusion method. Cold water, hot water and ethanol were the different extraction solvents used while the concentrations were 0.1g/ml, 0.2g/ml, 0.3g/ml, 0.4g/ml and 0.5g/ml. Generally, hot water extraction of the plant materials was most effective (p 〈 0.01) with the highest mean zone of inhibition of 4.42 ~c 0.38mm followed by ethanol extraction (3.55 ~c 0.47mm). The most susceptible bacteria was Enterobacter cloacae with the highest mean zone of inhibition of 22.6 ~c 3.50mm. This investigation indicates that the antimicrobial compounds in grape peel and black pepper are best liberated when extracted with ethanol while that of pawpaw is best extracted with hot water.

In the production of these snacks, the quality and quantity of fish required is adequately provided. Each snack contained minced fish, a source of essential nutrients in good nutrition. The snacks were subjected to organoleptic assessment by a group of five panelists. Highest preference was given to fish sweet potato balls, rated 9, followed by oyster and cockle barbecue rated 8.6 on a 9-point scale. This is because cockle and oyster meat are fleshy and tasty. Production of these snacks is a way of introducing high protein variety to the family menu. Prices of the production of snacks were calculated and results showed that they are cheap and easily affordable. Conclusively, these snacks are easy to make and could be widely accepted. The overall concept of making these snacks was to introduce a wide range of foods produced using fish to add value to our daily nutrition.

    Description: The study accessed the quality changes of Alestes nurse displayed at 31-33oC average daily temperature on different platforms, the traditional retail table used by fish processors and the NIFFR improved retail table. The fishes were displayed on the tables for 9 hours and quality attributes were monitored hourly by trained panelists. For A. nurse, the gills and intestine recorded faster deterioration starting from the fourth and fifth hours for samples in the traditional table while those in improved table were prolonged by one hour. Scores for skin brightness and texture did not indicate quality deterioration throughout the display period. However, at the end of the storage time, samples in screened table recorded 1.5 x 104 cfu/g while samples in unscreened table recorded 3.7 x 107 cfu/g. The study shows the effectiveness of the improved table over the traditional table in enhancing the keeping quality, minimizing fish contamination and improving the general hygiene of fresh fish.

    Description: Size measurements, anatomical composition and proximate composition of Horse eye mackerel fish (Caranax carangus) were carried out. The mean values of length (cm) and weight (g) were 21.79~c 1.76 and 87.96 ~c 21.4 respectively. Anatomical fractionation showed that the fish samples contained on the average 45.8% fillet, 17.75% head, 25.98% body frame and 6.12% gut. The proximate composition analysis showed that the fish sample contained 77.2% water content, 0.4% lipid, 20.63% protein and 1.67% ash. Horse eye mackerel fish thus constitutes a source of high protein as well as an ideal dietetic fish food.

    Description: Studies were conducted on some aspects of the reproductive biology of Hyperopisus bebe occidentalis in Zaria dam. Fish were captured by using nets of various mesh sizes for 24 months. Sex ratio of female to male was 1:1.08. Fully matured gonads were observed from July to October (rainy season). Fish with spent gonads were found from December to February, virgin or immature gonads (stage I and II) were found in February to May, with the peak in March in female fish and January in male. The estimated fecundity ranged from 2025 to 4192 eggs per female with mean of 2822.4 ~c SD 781.43 eggs that had standard length range of 24.20cm to 35.50cm. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) ranged from 1.63% to 3.31%. There was a significant correlation (r = 0.873, p〉0.05) between the weight of the fish and fecundity and insignificant correlation (r=0.497, p〈0.05) between the standard length and fecundity.

    Description: The survey of the fish fauna in Lake Kainji, Niger State and Kebbi state was carried out for a period of three months from August to October 2003 using fishermen’s catches. Forty two species of fish were identified and these were from the families Osteoglossidae, Gymnarchidae, Mormyridae, Characidae, Citharinidae, Distichodontidae, Cyprinidae Bagridae, Schilbeidae, Clariidae, Malapteruridae, Mochokidae, Channidae, Centropomidae, Cichlidae and Clupeidae. In terms of relative abundance, the family Bagridae has the highest species diversity of 20%, while Osteoglossidae, Citharinidae, Malapteruridae, Mochokidae, Centropomidae and Gymnarcidae had lowest species diversity of 2.5%.The study provides a biogenic history of fish species diversity within this period of the year in the last two decades. The significance of the study is to provide information towards a sustainable exploitation strategy in the community based management of the fisheries of the lake.

    Description: Fishes of the family Cichlidae are known for spectacular adaptive radiation and therefore serve as a model for evolutionary and ecological studies. They are highly speciated due to hybridization that frequently occur in the wild. The existence of an ecotype cichlid, ’wesafu’ in Epe Lagoon, Lagos, Nigeria appears to be the result of such hybridization. This paper reviews the profile of wesafu and compare the species with other cichlids, evaluate the probable causes of speciation which includes diversity in feeding morphology, mate choice, adaptation to changes in habitat arising from water level dynamics , eco-phenotypic variation, restricted migration to predation and introgressive hybridization. The implication of such speciation and hybridization were also highlighted.

    Description: The study was conducted to assess the socio-economic status of fisherfolks in Yuna Adopted Village Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State. One hundred respondents (65 male and 35 female) were purposively selected from four registered groups in the Village. Frequencies and Percentages were used to arrange, summarize and present the findings of this study. Majority of the male respondents fell within the range of 30-49 years, while female respondents range from 40-49 and 60-69 years. The distribution of respondents based on educational attainment shows that 92.3% male and 100% female had Quranic education. Majority of the respondents (both male and female) lives in mud with thatched roof houses and do not own radio and television. Similarly the highest proportion of male respondents generated mostly income of 〉N111,000 and N6,000 ? N10,000, while female respondents earned between N11,000 ? N30,000 and N6,000 ? N10,000 only. The technologies awareness by respondents include fish farming, V-bottom boat, Solar tent dryer and trammel net, only fish farming was adopted by respondents. The major constraints to Agricultural Production were identified and suggestion was made on how to overcome the constraints.

    Description: The role of water in fish production could not be overemphasized. This is because water is required for the total functioning of fishes. This study therefore examined the relationship/effect of rainfall pattern on fish production. Secondary data were collected on mean annual rainfall and total annual fish output for the period of 10 years (2000-2009). The study showed that high rainfall was recorded in the year 2001 which marked the lowest fish production year due to floods effect on fish enclosures. These therefore implies that fish farmers should be encouraged to construct ponds with protective measures such as screens, dykes, freeboards, etc. which prevents total loss of stocks during heavy rainfall.

    Description: A bio- economic assessment based on the Return On Investment (ROI) of a single purse seiner was done from August 2007 to February 2008 at Orimedu. Catch composition in terms of relative abundance of species and their sizes were also assessed. Total income was derived from the product of average selling price for a basin of fish, average number of fish basins sampled from a purse seiner, number of fishing trips of a purse seiner per month and the total number of months. Total costs were derived from the sum of capital costs, operational costs, depreciation costs, maintenance cost and labor cost which was estimated as 1/3 rd of total income. Fish catch was dominated by mature fish consisting of over 90 % clupeids and measured in heaps of 200 pieces in basins. On the average, there were 17 basins of fish from a purse seiner. Each basin was valued at N8000 and the average number of fishing trips in a month was 9. The calculated ROI was 30.96% indicating that the fishing method was lucrative. The study showed that purse seining is both biologically and economically sustainable with great potentials to alleviate poverty if adopted by the local Nigerian fisherfolks.

    Description: A 4.78 M length overall (LOA) flat bottom modern fishing boat (punt), was designed and constructed using locally available materials. The boat features include easy construction, stability, and high capacity to carry load. Other features include: least cost, light weight, shallow draft, and easy maneuverability. The light displacement (weight empty) was 202.24kg, which was lighter than a local boats of same size. When placed on water a draft of 5cm. The capacity of the boat was 715kg (11 prs), and the total production cost of N39,000.00, which was not beyond the reach of an average fisher folks, or fish farmer. The punt can easily be maneuvered when propelled with 5hp out board engine as it floats at a shallow draft (10cm); this makes it adequate for fishing activities on shallow water bodies. The craft, because of its easy maneuverability, can also be used on shallow water bodies for recreational activities such as, sport fishing.

    Description: Bacteria flora predominates the skin of freshly caught fish, and will invade the tissue of the fish immediately after catch. Two preservative methods (cold smoking and freezing) were used to store eighteen specimens of Chrysichthys furcatus harvested from River Niger at Cable-point, Asaba. Two specimens were randomly selected every day from the cold smoked specimens and on weekly basis from the frozen specimens for physical, chemical and biological examination for bacteria causing spoilage. Five bacteria isolates: Salmonella spp, Vibrio cholera, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Proteus vulgaris, were identified. Physical observation of the cold smoked fish after 24 hours showed the production of gas, off-odor, off flavour and slime formation. The colony forming units (CFU) of bacteria isolated from the fish immediately after harvest was 116 x 109 cfu/g. It increased to 268 x 109 cfu/g after 4 days of preservation, and to 64 x 109 cfu/g after four weeks of preservation. The Chi square (X2) analysis revealed that there was a significant difference between the bacteria load of frozen and cold smoked specimens. Free fatty acid value immediately after harvest was 0.90 %. It increased to 2.24 % after four weeks in the freezer and 2.35 % after four days of cold smoked storage. The Total Volatile Nitrogen profile at harvest time was 15.3 mgN/100g. It increased to 35.2 mgN/100g after four days, (for the cold smoked specimens) and 26.3 mgN/100g (for the frozen specimens) after four weeks. The peroxide and hydrogen ion concentrations followed the same increasing trend. The study revealed that freezer preservation was better than the cold smoked one. This is because bacteria proliferation was reduced and or halted in the frozen specimens, whereas it encouraged rapid bacteria growth in the cold smoked fish. The production of total volatile nitrogen (TVN), free fatty acid (FFA), peroxide value (PV) and hydrogen ion concentration (pH) was higher in the cold smoked specimens than in frozen ones, hence the cold smoked specimen exhibited shorter shelf life than their frozen specimens.

    Description: The proximate composition of some wild tilapiine fishes in Epe lagoon, Lagos, Nigeria was analyzed. The species were Sarotherodon melanotheron, Tilapia guineensis, Tilapia mariaei, Sarotherodon galileaus and an ecotype cichlid popularly called ‘wesafu’. Major nutrient compositions of raw muscles like protein, fat, moisture and ash were determined. Proximate compositions were found to be varied among the species. Protein was determined in Sarotherodon melanotheron (19.13%), T. guineensis (18.71%), T. mariae (18.08%), S. galileaus (18.34%) and ‘wesafu’ (21.80%) respectively. Lipid content was recorded as 0.82%, 0.40%, 0.60%, 0.65%, and 0.90% for the tilapia species. The highest level of moisture content was found in T. guineensis (81.70%) and the lowest was in ‘wesafu’ (78.50%). The percentage of ash content was highest in S. galileaus and S.melanotheron (1.75%) and lowest in T. guineensis (1.00%). The present study revealed highest protein content in the ecotype cichlid, wesafu (19.22%) and lowest value in T.mariae (18.08%) while fat was highest in ‘wesafu’ (0.90%). The results of this study reveal the nutritional significance of the ecotype cichlid, ‘wesafu’ above other cichlids of the lagoon.

    Description: The changes that occur on proximate composition of some common fish processing methods used in Nigeria were studied in order to determine the nutritional content of the processed products. Traditional (smoke drying and sun drying) and modern (electrical oven drying) methods of processing were used to process Pseudotholithus elongatus and the results were compared with the fresh sample to determine the changes that occur during processing. The results for the fresh sample of P. elongatus were 79.50%, 1.50%, 0.8% and 18.2% for moisture, ash, lipid and protein. For the processed products, the moisture content for smoke-dried, sun-dried, salt sun-dried and oven-dried fish were 27.00%, 21.83%, 19.50% and 20.17% . Oven dried had the highest protein content (69.87%) while salt sun-dried had the lowest (54.90%). Lipid content was highest in sun-dried (6.6%) and lowest in smoke-dried (4.6%). Correlation between smoke-dried and sun-dried were r2 = 0.99, smoke-dried and oven-dried were r2= 0.98 and smoke-dried and salt sun-dried were r2= 0.98. There was no correlation between the fresh and the processed P.elongatus. The present findings revealed that processing affect the nutritional composition of fish.

    Description: The effects of fresh garlic (Allium sativum) at concentrations of 0 g/kg (control), 10 g/kg, 30 g/kg and 50 g/kg of fish on lipid oxidation and microbial growth of hot smoked catfish Clarias gariepinus during a 28 day storage period at ambient temperature of 20-260C was examined.     Description: The effects of groundnut oil and sodium chloride as protectants against insect infestation of dried fish were investigated for a period of 13 weeks. The fish samples were divided into 3 groups, a group was soaked for 10mins in 30% sodium chloride solution (Brine), and the second group was dipped in groundnut oil after smoking while the third group served as control. The samples were kept in different containers in the laboratory at temperature of 28oC and 70% Relative humidity for 13 weeks. Results show that, the fish treated with 30% sodium chloride was effectively protected from insect and moulds compared to sample treated with groundnut oil. The odour and the texture were also more attractive to customers. However, fish treated with groundnut oil was attacked by insects at week 12th and 13th with 6 Maculatus, 4 Necrobia rufipes species and at few mould colonies. The control specimens however was attacked by insects from week 8th to 13th with numerous number of both Necrobia rufipes and Maculatus species as well as mould colonies showing as early as from the 6th week. The results proved that sodium chloride is more effective than groundnut oil for long period of storage.

They are considered subservient to their male counterpart, even in Europe and America where women have greater basic human right. This paper evaluates the various roles of women in Fisheries and fish processing. Statistics from the European Union shows that, of the various fishing sectors, participation of women (in terms of number) was greatest in fish processing, followed by marine aquaculture, marine fishing and inland aquaculture, with no women involved in inland fishing. In Asia and Africa women are basically involved in fish processing and marketing. In Asia (Thailand and Philippines), women are involved in hatchery operations in aquaculture in addition to fish processing. The finding of the review shows that Fish processing in developing countries, principally Africa is not attracting young literate generation who may have better management competence. It further revealed that, in Nigeria women are directly involved in capture fishery, in addition to fish marketing and processing. This is aimed at empowering women economically to meet the pressing needs of the family. The paper further assesses the problems of women in fisheries and fish processing namely, access to financial resources, education, support services and the need to ensure food security. Possible ways of improving women’s participation in fisheries were highlighted.

    Description: The effects of diesel-oil spillage of fresh (0.4ppt), brackish (25ppt) and marine (37ppt) waters on elongation (cm) and breaking load (kgf) of artisanal PVA synthetic twine of varied diameter (4mm, 6mm, 8mm and 10mm) soaked for 16 weeks was studied. Chemical (solubility) test was carried out to identify the experimental twine as PVA among other synthetic twines. The elongation (cm) and breaking load (kgt) of PVA twine diameters were tested by tensile-strength gauge machine (0-200kg) and was carried out in unpolluted (control) and polluted states (spillage level) at 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% diesel-oil concentrations of different water salinity. Factorial statistics was used to analyze the treatments; twine (at four levels), water salinity (at three levels) and concentrations (at six levels). This implies 4 by 3 by 6, replicated in four places (288 treatments). Results indicated that elongation (cm) and breaking load (kg) of the specimens were significantly (P〈0.05) influenced by twine thickness. Twine l0mm soaked in 3.0 litres of unpolluted freshwater had significant (p〈0.5) correlation coefficient r,0.927 and lowest r- value of 0.499 was obtained in twine 4mm soaked in 100% diesel-oil concentration. Significant (P 〈0.05) relationships were observed between the correlation coefficient r = 0.531-0.927 for unpolluted and r = 0.499-0.592 for polluted tests. The study revealed that diesel-oil spillage had negative effects on the quality of twines. The thicker the PVA twine diameters (10, 8, 6 and 4mm) at lowered (0%, 20%, 40%,60%,80% & 100%) diesel-oil spillage of fresh (0.4ppt), Brackish (25ppt) and Marine (37ppt) waters respectively, the higher the significant (P〈0.05) elongation (cm) and breaking load (kgt) were evaluated in most cases.

    Description: The effects of two different preservative methods, NIOMR Smoking Kiln and Oven drying on Crude Protein minerals and Vitamin of clarias gariepinus were studied. Clarias gariepinus were obtained from the fish farm of African Regional Aquaculture Centre, Aluu, Port Harcourt. The crude protein, minerals and vitamins of the fresh fish were determined immediately while two other batches were separately dried using oven at 50~'C for 30minutes and NIOMR Smoking Kiln at 70~'C for 3 hours. Result of the crude protien of fresh fish was 21.84 ~c 1.10 which increased to 59.53 ~c 1.88 and 35.41 ~c 1.00 in both NIOMR smoking and oven, respectively. This means that, there was a significant different in both dryers on the crude protein. This will improve the knowledge and capacity of rural women and agricultural communities on the appropriate processing method for fish. The mineral and vitamins of oven dried and NIOMR Smoking kiln were analyzed. The vitamin content of both the fish, dried and smoking kiln shows no significant different except in vitamin A which was significant (p〈0.05).There was significant different (p〈0.05) in the mineral content of the two different drying method except in sodium, Potassium and Phosphorus of the drying method. This result indicates that the two drying methods have effects on the nutritional quality of catfish.

    Description: A study was carried out on the fatty-acid composition of Macrobrachium vollenhovenii (African river prawn) in Ogun estuary, Ogun State, Nigeria. Sexes and size groups were considered during the study. Fatty-acid analysis was done in triplicates and data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics, analysis of variance and Duncan's multiple range tests. Fatty acids analysed which included oleic acid, linoleic acid,' stearic acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid and lauric acid were classified into saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids. All values of saturated fatty acids were higher in female (29.64%) than in male (25.50%) p〈 0.05. So also the monounsaturated fatty acid also showed higher value in female (29.64%) than in male (25.50%). All fatty- acid values were higher in female M. vollenhovenii than in male. Meanwhile, myristic acid was highest in the two sexes and the combined sexes, (35.68% female), (33.14% male) and (34.74% combined sexes). The fatty-acid components were not influenced by the size of the fish. This study clearly indicated that the nutritive value of M. vollenhovenii is quite well comparable to the edible species of decapods already studied (shrimps, prawns and lobsters) and could be included in both human and livestock diets.

    Description: A study with intent towards acculturation was carried out on the gut conients and feeding patterns of Macrobrachium vollenhovenii and Caridina africana occurring at Asejire lake and Erin-Ijesa Waterfalls respectively for two years using numerical abundance and frequency of occurrence methods of analysis. There was a strong correlation (p〈0.05) between prawn abundance and food availability, The gut content analysis of M. vollenhovenii revealed that juveniles were predominantly zooplanktivorous, feeding on copepods and rotifers while the adults were omnivorous, utilizing a wider variety of animal foods than plant materials. This changing of diets and patterns as the species advances in age has an implication for its culture potentials. Stomach fullness index was high during the wet season which coincided with high abundance of prawns, C. africana fed mainly on diatoms, zooplankton and other micro-phytoplankton, thus an onmivore with herbivorous tendency. The availability of both species in fresh water bodies and their foods revealed that both species can be cultured in earthen ponds since their unspecialized flexible dietary habit is an optimal strategy for sustained productivity.

    Description: The objective of this study was to determine the quality deterioration of African catfish Clarias gariepinus and Tilapia, Orechromis niloticus stored at-4~'C for 8 weeks. Weekly analysis was conducted to measure protein, moisture, crude fat and ash content and evaluation of the sensory quality. The result clearly reveals that during storage, both the samples showed a highly significant (p〈0.05) decreasing trend in protein, lipid, ash and moisture content. The result shows that protein, moisture, fat and ash content of the fish samples decreases with increasing duration of frozen storage. The fresh samples has the highest value of protein, moisture, fat and ash content while the least value was recorded on the 8th week. 19.98 ~c 2.66%, 80.71 ~c 1.65%, 3.92 ~c 0.5% and 2.52 ~c were recorded for freshly prepared Clarias gariepinus respectively while 12.62 ~c 1.22%, 66.86 ~c 0.68%, 1.08 ~c 1.04% and 1.14 ~c 0.33% were recorded on the 8th week respectively. 20.80 ~c 1.46, 60.75 ~c 2.50, 9.75 ~c 2.50% and 5.85 ~c 2.51% were recorded for freshly prepared Oreochromis niloticus respectively while 25.05 ~c 2.20%, 47.60 ~c 2. 15%, 7.1 ~c 0.20 and 3.00 ~c 2.10% were recorded on the 8th week respectively. After 8 weeks, the total decrease was 7.36%, 13.85%, 2.84% and 1.38% respectively for Clarias gariepinus and 3.75%, 13.45%, 2.65% and 2.85% respectively for Oreochromis niloticus. Sensory evaluation of the fish samples revealed that quality, texture, colour, odour, aroma and taste decrease with increasing duration of storage and best quality obtained when freshly prepared.

    Description: The toxicity of oil - based drilling mud on the survival of the fingerlings of Niger Delta mudskipper, Periophthalmus papilio were studied using static plastic tanks. The exposure period lasted for 96 hours. Lethal concentration (LC50) and lethal time (LT50) were determined. The control tanks contained no oil- based drilling mud. Results revealed increased in mortality values of the fish to all lethal concentrations. There was no mortality observed in the control tank. The oil- based drilling mud were toxic on Periopthalmus papilio.

    Description: Jabi Lake is a natural water body in Abuja Federal Capital Territory (FCT). It was expanded for commercial fishing following relocation of Nigeria's headquarters to Abuja in 1993. Quantitative analysis of microbiological status of water and fish from the Lake was carried out. Samples were collected from the dam site, open water, middle lake and inlet. Result reveal that total coliform count which are indicators of pollution are high (2.0 x 103 cfu/ml, 1.1 x 103 cfu/ml, 1.0 x 103 cfu/ml and 1.1 x 103 cfu/ml for dam site, open water, middle lake, and inlet respectively). Total viable count too is high (9.2 x 103 cfu/ml, 4.9 x 103 cfu/ml, 4.6 x 103 cfu/ml and 4.9 x 103 cfu/ml for dam site, open water, middle lake and inlet respectively). There are no coliform bacteria in the muscle of the fish. High bacterial load is an indication of biological pollution and these calls for restraint on the side of those who are using the lake as site for refuse dump.

    Description: A fisheries-dependent surveys was conducted to identify and quantify the species composition of shrimp by-catch and its effect on fishery sustainability. Samples were bought monthly, from October 2009 to June 2010 from landings site, at Apapa-Liverpool market Lagos. 25 fish species belonging to 18 families targeted in other inshore fisheries constituted the by-catch species. The percent of weight compositions of some economically important by-catch species were: Pseudotolithus senegalensis (5.76%),Ilisha africana (14.65%), Pentanemus quinquarius (2.94%), Pteriscion peli (6.60%), Galeoides decadactylus (3.17%), Cynoglossus senegalens is (6.76%) and Chloroscombrus chysurus (10.81%). About 80% of the shrimp by-catch species were juvenile fin fish. However, continuous harvest without appropriate mitigating measures poses a threat to sustainability of coastal capture fisheries. Recommendations are proffered in order to conserve the resources for sustainable development.

    Description: Human activities in natural environments are among the most important recreational needs. Monthly studies of tourism characteristics was conducted during wet and dry seasons, over a two year period in the three landscapes along the 6817.7m length of Agbokim waterfalls by using a close-ended pre-coded survey instrument. Through MANOVA analysis of the 1780 respondents, we found strong positive association between peoples visits to the recreational areas and the type of landscape in which the respondents felt happy. People who felt happier in landscape dominated by waterfalls, visit the middle reaches of the river for outdoor recreation more often, while people who feel happy in landscapes dominated by slow water current with an extensive wide area and floodplains, visit downstream reaches of the waterfalls more often. Activities performed more often along downstream reaches include fishing, bathing/swimming, boating and hunting while more frequent activities in the middle reaches (waterfalls) include taking photographs, picnics, enjoying nature, outing with family and friends, looking at view, resting and relaxing.

    Description: The morphometric parameters of 54 Hyperopisus hebe occidentalis obtained from Zaria Dam were investigated. The length occidentalis examined ranged from 18.9-41.0 cm and weight ranged from 25-425g, the largest male weighed 175g while the female was 425g. The length-weight relationship of H. Bebe occidentalis in Zaria showed a positive correlation (r=0.897) in both regression exponent (b〉3) for both sexes showed positive allometric growth pattern. The mean condition factor obtained (0.95- 1.26). In both sexes, the condition factor generally increased with increase in individual size of the fish irrespective of sex but slightly in male than female.

    Description: The study was carried out to compare the microbiological and proximate analysis of fresh Synodontis nigrita, Mormyrus rume and Chrysichythys nigrodigitatus sold at Olomore market, Abeokuta, Ogun State. This fish are always available at Olomore market and other market around Abeokuta and its environment. The protein, carbonhydrate, moisture, and ash of the fishes was based on the method of analysis of the Association of Official Analysis (AOAC:1990). Data for each sp. were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA). The Results show no significant difference in moisture content of Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus (70.99 ~c 1.09%), Mormyrus rume (67.30 ~c 4.08%) and Synodontis nigrita (67.33 ~c I.99%). The crude protein content of Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus (12.10 ~c 0.74%) Mormyrus rume ( 15.48 ~c 1.63%) and Synodontis nigrita (I0.73 ~c 0.61%). For carbohydrate content we have Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus (1.15 ~c 0.13%9), Mormyms rume (2.09 ~c 0.20%) and Synodontis nigrita (2.04 ~c 0.10%). Fat content of Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus (7.15 ~c 1.29%) Mormyrus rume (8.97 ~c I.9%) and Synodontis nigrita (8.62 ~c 0.89%) and for ash content of Chrysichthys nigrodigititus (6.33 ~c 0.69%), Mormyrus rume (4.89 ~c 0.21%) and Synodontis nigrita (8.85 ~c 0.27%). For crude protein there was different (p 〈 0.05) same with fat content, ash content, and carbohydrate content (p〈 0.05) unlike moisture content and dry matter content which is (28.57 ~c 1.55%), (32.50 ~c 4.08%) and (32.67 ~c 1.99%) in Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus, Mormyrus rume and Synodotis nigrita. Result showed total bacteria count from (1.9 to 3.8 x 10〈sup〉6〈/sup〉 cfu/ml) from Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus while (2.8 to 4.7 x 10〈sup〉6〈/sup〉 ur cfu/ml) was obtained for Synodontis nigrita and (2.6 to 3.8 X 10〈sup〉6〈/sup〉cfu/ml) for Mormyrus rume. The micro-organism isolated were pseudomonas spp; Escherichia spp; Klebsiella spp; omomls spp, Escherichia spp., Klebsiella spp., Staphylococcus spp., Proteeus spp. and Micrococcus spp. On biochemical characterization the following bacteria was isolated Pseudomonas spp., Escherichia spp., Klebsiella, spp. staphylococcus spp., Proteus Micrococcus spp.

    Description: Study of some Physico-chemical parameters and fish species composition of Doma Darn was carried out between the month of August 2012. Fishing communities along the dam were selected at sampling stations and collection of fish species. The values of physico-parameters obtained for stations were in the range of 28.10-92 m for depth, 27.70-28.48~'for temperature, 7.03-7.64 for PH, 7.23-7.64mg/l for dissolved oxygen (DO), 30.08-31.75 ntu for turbidity, 94.64-105.17mg/l for alkalinity and 79.17-80.58mg/l for total hardness. The result indicated that there was significant difference (p〈0.5)for depth, temperature turbidity and alkalinity, while there was no significant difference (p〈0.05) for DO, pH and water hardness among the stations. The result of these parameters among the duration shows that there was significant different (p〈0.05) in all the parameters except pH. The study revealed that there were twenty-five (25) fish species belonging to 12 families in the dam. The family Cichlidae and Mochokidae and Bagridae which has three each, While the family, Polypteridae, Channidae, Centropomidae, flepsetidae and Protopteridae has the lowest number of one (1) each. The overall result revealed that the Phvsico-chemical parameters were mostly influenced by duration and not much by stations; and parametersoaram measured were within the recommended water quality requirement for growth and survival of aquatic organisms.
