An experiment is described in which 32 plots of S24 ryegrass were harvested by two methods, direct- and swath-harvesting at four cutting dates over a period of 14 days. The difference between the two methods was marginal but highest yields and quality were obtained by cutting when seed moisture content was between 53 and 40% and harvesting from the swath when it was about 30%, By the time the seed in the uncut crop had reached 30% moisture, yield from direct harvesting was greater than that from cutting followed by swath-harvesting, although the yields from both methods were falling. The practical significance of these results is discussed.
