Measuring the overall success of product development efforts hasbeen frustrating because there is no generally recognized metric tomeasure effectiveness. The R&D Effectiveness Index is introduced toaddress this need. It measures effectiveness by comparing the profitfrom new products to the investment in new product development. Providesthe details for calculating the index along with alternativeinterpretations. Finds a strong relationship between the R&DEffectiveness Index and other performance factors and argues that theR&D Effectiveness Index can be used to compare performance, measureimprovement, and evalute business units. Illustrates its application ina case study.
