Abstract The semiclassical approximation can be used to calculate the extrema in the energy dependence of the total cross section for collisions between neutral atoms and molecules. For this treatment, the classical deflection functionΘ(β) must be known in the region nearβ 0, where it passes smoothly through 0° (glory scattering). Numerical values forβ 0,Θ′ (β 0) andΘ′' (β 0), which determine the amplitude of the extrema, are presented for aKihara (12,6) potential for various reduced energiesK (0.01≦K≦100) and potential parameters α (−0,3≦α≦0.5).
