Description / Table of Contents:
The preparation of salts of an acid of phosphorus with the formula H4P2O6 and the structure \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm P}\limits^{\rm 3} {\rm\,{\!-\!-}\,O\,{\!-\!-}\,}\mathop {\rm P}\limits^{\rm 5} $\end{document} is described. This acid is isomeric with hypophosphoric acid, which has the structure \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm P}\limits^{\rm 4} {\rm\,{\!-\!-}\,}\mathop {\rm P}\limits^{\rm 4} $\end{document}. Both acids can be hydrolyzed to one mol orthophosphoric acid and one mol phosphorous acid. Salts of the \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm P}\limits^{\rm 3} {\rm\,{\!-\!-}\,O\,{\!-\!-}\,}\mathop {\rm P}\limits^{\rm 5} $\end{document}-acid can be prepared e.g. by phosphorylation of orthophosphate with phosphorus trichloride or by reaction of phosphite with phosphorus oxychloride. Dehydrated mixtures of phosphorous acid and orthophosphoric acid can also be used for the preparation. The properties of the two isomers are markedly different. In the literature the name isohypophosphoric acid has been used for the \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm P}\limits^{\rm 3} {\rm\,{\!-\!-}\,O\,{\!-\!-}\,}\mathop {\rm P}\limits^{\rm 5} $\end{document}-acid.
Notes:
