Description / Table of Contents: Systematic Investigations on the Behaviour of Organotin Compounds towards Liquid sulfur Dioxide. VIII: Reactions of Bis(triorganotin) and Diorganotin Sulfides in Liquid SO2At low temperature, bis(trialkyltin) sulfides 1a-c react in liquid SO2 to yield bis(trialkyltin) thiosulfonates 2a-c and products containing less sulfur. At higher temperatures, mainly oxidation to bis(trialkyltin) sulfates 4a-c takes place; as by-products dialkyltin sulfites 5 and sulfates 6 may result. In contrast, bis(triphenyltin) sulfide (1d) yields the disulfinate 8d and diphenyltin sulfide (9d) independently of conditions. The dialkyltin sulfides 9a, b react with SO2 at room temperature to yield insertion products 10a, b and at 60°C to form sulfites 5a,b. The vibrational spectra of the newly prepared compounds are discussed.
