    Description / Table of Contents: Structure and Synthesis of 5-Methoxy-5,6-dehydromethysticin, a Minor Component of Piper sanctumThe woody roots of the Mexican shrub Piper sanctum contain small amounts of a novel Kawa-type lactone with an extra oxygen function in the acetogenine part of the molecule. Its structure was established mainly by a study of the spectral data of the isolated substance itself as well as of those of its tetrahydroderivative cis-4. 4,5-Dimethoxy-6-(3,4-methylen-dioxystyryl)-2-pyronc (5b) was synthesized by hydroxylation [SeO2] of methysticin in position C—5, methylation [CH3J/AgO], and dehydrogenation [chloranil] and shown to be identical with the natural product.
    Notes: Aus dem Wurzelholz von Piper sanctum wurde erstmalig ein Lacton vom Typus des Yangonins mit einer zweiten Methoxygruppe im Pyronteil des Moleküls isoliert. Die Konstitution 5b [4,5-Dimethoxy-6-(3,4-methylendioxystyryl)-2-pyron] wurde auf spektroskopischem Wege ermittelt und durch Synthese sowohl des Naturstoffes 5b selbst als auch seines Tetrahydro-derivates [5,6-cis-Dihydro-4,5-dimethoxy-6-(3,4-methylendioxyphenäthyl)-2-pyron (cis-4)] bestätigt.
