A new method was developed for estimating the volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient, kLa, in a fermentor. Various methods were investigated for the on-line estimation of kLa with an analog computer employing a steepest-descent calculation technique. The method by which kLa is estimated (by minimizing the error residue of the model) was found to be very applicable. A method for the simultaneous estimation of the volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient and respiration rate in biological systems is also presented.
