Description: This new species is closely allied to Helota Vandepolli Rits. ¹) from Borneo, but at once distinguished by the more strongly raised interstices of the elytra, by the deeper angular notches at the apical portion of the lateral margins of the elytra and by the more blackish (less bronze) colour of the upper side. Length 12 mm. — Subshining above, very shining underneath; above blackish, with very faint tinges of dark bronze green; each elytron provided with two small convex flavous spots, situated between the 3rd and 6th striae; underneath testaceous, except the head without the throat, the anterior margin and the front angles of the middle portion as well as the lateral portions of the prosternum, and the elytral epipleurae which parts are dark bronze green. Antennae dark pitchy, the 3 or 4 basal joints reddish. Legs testaceous, the tip of the femora and the extreme base and apex of the tibiae black, the tarsi dark pitchy brown. Head strongly produced in front of the eyes, almost inconspicuously raised between the eyes, the raised portion broadly flattened and covered with large punctures, which are strongly contrasting with those on the lateral streaks along the eyes, where they are minute and closely set; along the middle of the narrowed front portion the punctures are still smaller and scarce.

Description: No doubt the female Helota from Lakhon (Siam) in the Paris Museum, determined by me in 1897 ¹) as Helota Vandepolli Rits., is a female specimen of the recently described Helota lugubris from Laos (see page 57 of this volume). The quoted ♀, which is now before me and which measures 12 mm. in length, agrees with the ♂ of lugubris except in the following points, which certainly are sexual differences.

Description: Den beiden bekannt gewesenen Hydrocharis-Arten, H. morsus ranae und H. asiatica, hat HANS HALLIER in Nova Guinea VIII, Bot., Livr. Centralblatt XXX, Abt. I, 1913. p. 24 sqq.) zu veranlassen.

Description: Herr Edw.

Description: As I stated in my paper on the non-marine Molluscs of Surinam (p. 1 of this volume), our knowledge of the Mollusc-fauna of the Dutch colonies in America is only very little. In that paper I exposed all that is known, up to the present time, of the non-marine shell-bearing molluscs of Surinam; at present I will do the same with regard to the other Dutch colony in America, viz. the colony of Curaçao. This colony consists of two groups of small islands, all placed under one Governor, residing in the principal island Curaçao, which has given its name to the whole colony. One group, near the coast of Venezuela, consists of the islands Aruba, Curaço, Little Curaçao, Bonaire and Little Bonaire. The other group, situated in the northern part of the chain of the Lesser Antilles, comprises the small islands St. Eustatius, Saba and St. Martin; the latter only partly, viz. the south of the island, the northern part belonging to France.

Description: Whilst the Mollusc-fauna of the Dutch colonies in the eastern hemisphere has been studied since very remote times, and its literature represents a considerable pile of very valuable papers, written by well-known conchologists and investigators of many parts of the world, the Dutch West-Indies, and especially Dutch Guyana or Surinam, are very little known in regard to their molluscs. As far as I know the only existing list of non-marine molluscs of Surinam is that given by the late Prof. Ed. von Martens in his „Binnenmollusken Venezuela’s”.

Description: As I stated in my paper on the non-marine Molluscs of Surinam (p. 1 of this volume), our knowledge of the Mollusc-fauna of the Dutch colonies in America is only very little. In that paper I exposed all that is known, up to the present time, of the non-marine shell-bearing molluscs of Surinam; at present I will do the same with regard to the other Dutch colony in America, viz. the colony of Cura\xc3\xa7ao.\nThis colony consists of two groups of small islands, all placed under one Governor, residing in the principal island Cura\xc3\xa7ao, which has given its name to the whole colony. One group, near the coast of Venezuela, consists of the islands Aruba, Cura\xc3\xa7o, Little Cura\xc3\xa7ao, Bonaire and Little Bonaire.

Ed. von Martens in his \xe2\x80\x9eBinnenmollusken Venezuela\xe2\x80\x99s\xe2\x80\x9d. Description: In \xe2\x80\x9eThe Rhopalocera of Java\xe2\x80\x9d, Danaidae, Satyridae, Ragadidae and Elymniadae by M. C. Piepers and P. C. T. Snellen (the Hague, H. Nyhoff, 1913) I have found on page 80, that D. melissa Cram. should be synonymous with D. limniace Cram. On the same page one read: \xe2\x80\x9eThe forms of this species (limniace Cram.) have been dealt with extensively by Fruhstorfer in \xe2\x80\x9eBerliner Entom. Zeitschr.\xe2\x80\x9d, 1899, and by Dr. L. Martin in \xe2\x80\x9eDeutsche Entom. Zeitschr. Iris\xe2\x80\x9d, 1910, where they have based several species and subspecies on these various forms; the latter attributes them to climatic influences. I suspect that here again we have simply to deal with phenomena of colour evolution; the specially pronounced spreading of the white, which plays the chief role here, being doubtless nothing else.\xe2\x80\x9d Always it will be a danger to determine a butterfly only by its external morphological characters, especially by its pattern and colour, even when people will explain the differences of pattern and colour by phenomena of colour evolution. Mr. Piepers is here not right, because there are also anatomical differences, which separate the two forms of Danais specifically. In \xe2\x80\x9eDie Grossschmetterlinge der Erde\xe2\x80\x9d, Tom. 9, pag. 202, Mr. Fruhstorfer has published, that the vulvae of the two quoted species as well as the uncus are different.

Description: The Gonini-Expedition, that explored in 1903 and 1904 some of the rivers, giving origin to the Marowijne or Maroni, as it is called by the French (see sketch of Surinam on p. 2 of this volume), made also a little excursion on French territory, and explored a part of Mount Cottica on the right bank of the Lawa. Here, at an altitude of 450 M., were collected some specimens of Doryssa hohenackeri Phil., of which species, although recorded from Surinam in general, no well-stated locality in our colony is known (see p. 35), and also three specimens of an Ampullaria, which apparently is related to the A. crassa Swains. from the Lawa, mentioned in my paper on the non-marine molluscs of Surinam (this volume pp. 1\xe2\x80\x9446). With Mr. Sowerby, who had he kindness to compare it, I am agreeing in taking it for a variety of this species.

Description: Agreeing in general appearance with the type of the genus, N. licheneus Pasc. (? = Anhammus conspersus Thoms.), but easily distinguished by the different sculpture of the elytra.\nLength from the top of the antennary tubers to the end of the elytra 24 mm., breadth at the shoulders 8,5 mm. \xe2\x80\x94 Derm black, apical half of elytra indistinctly variegated with pitchy red, epipleurae entirely of this colour, the 3rd and following joints of the antennae, as far as they are present (5), and the legs reddish testaceous, the latter with the exception of the black apical half of the femora, the base of the tibiae and the apex of the 3rd and 4th tarsal joints. The whole insect is covered with a dense pale ochreous pubescence, less dense however on the testaceous parts of the antennae and legs, and absent on the granules and punctures which cover the elytra in regular longitudinal oblique lines; at two thirds of the length of the elytra a curved irregular black band is present, formed by naked spots which are confluent towards the suture and transverse towards the sides. The scutellum has a glossy line along the middle.
