Notizen: An elastoplastic constitutive model for concrete subjected to cyclic loading conditions is presented. The model is an extension of a recently proposed constitutive concept.7 An initial active loading process is described, using the conventional framework of the rate independent theory of plasticity. An appropriate hardening/softening parameter is introduced which allows one to model the sensitivity of material characteristics to varying confining pressure, including a smooth transition from stable to unstable response. For stress histories that include stress reversals, the formulation invokes a set of neutral loading loci defining the conditions of the neutral state.8 The field of hardening moduli is specified through an appropriate interpolation rule which enables one to simulate adequately the effect of cyclic degradation of the material. The performance of the model is verified for some typical cyclic loading histories, and the results are compared with existing experimental data.

Notizen: Results obtained with the finite element method are greatly affected by the overall dimensions of the mesh and the number and size of the elements used. Proper choice of the boundary conditions is also necessary to obtain an accurate estimate of the unknowns of the problem. This paper discusses some factors that influence the results of a finite element idealization of the problem of earth pressure behind a gravity wall with a dry, cohesionless backfill.

Notizen: The consolidation of a porous saturated sphere under an isotropic pressure, and free to drain on its surface, is examined. It is shown that a Mandel - Cryer effect develops irrespective of the magnitude of the strains which occur. Surprisingly, the effect is found to be virtually independent of strain. However, the progress of consolidation is substantially faster in the presence of large strains.

Notizen: The subject paper1 details finite element analyses of underreamed footings installed at the tips of deeply embedded pipe piles. The analysis model incorporated a double-hardening constitutive law and was calibrated using extensive field and laboratory test results. The results of the study were used to judge the relative effects of various aspects of the design, such as partial drainage and layering. Ultimately, this analysis was used to assess the adequacy of the footings as a remedial strengthening measure for a major offshore platform.

Notizen: The problem of earth thrust for a massive building in a seismic environment is analysed. Intertial and kinematic soil-structure interactions are considered by modelling the soil and the structure together. The problem is solved in the frequency domain by using the computer code FLUSH. Results show that the horizontal component of the seismic earth thrust is much greater than that obtained when applying the Mononobe-Okabe theory. This study establishes a set of conclusicns and recommendations for both design and practical purposes, and proposes future lines of investigation.

Notizen: In the use of underground space for storage of solar energy, storage of excess heat from thermal power plants and containment of nuclear waste, the host medium is subjected to a thermal field accompanied by a thermal stress field. These stresses may endanger the stability and integrity of the structure. In this paper, the stress field, in circular and spherical openings, due to a given thermal field is analytically determined and numerically verified. Both lined and unlined openings are considered. The numerical and analytical results are in a satisfactory agreement. The lining stresses, support pressure and radial interface displacement depend only on the thermal field in the lining. A simplified method of stress computation applicable to a thin lining is also presented.

Notizen: It is shown that a finite element calculation which approximates an ‘infinite medium’; problem by a mesh with finite boundaries will yield greater accuracy when stress boundary conditions are applied on the far-field boundary than is obtainable with displacement boundary conditions. In particular, with Poisson's ratio close to 0.5, the accuracy of the latter model is severely impaired, whereas the stress boundary condition model is unaffected for Poisson's ratio of 0.49 and a reasonable mesh. The eight-node quadratic isoparametric element displays superb accuracy for the axisymmetric thick cylinder with either type of boundary condition.

Notizen: A new semi-analytical solution for the transport of a conservative contaminant species in a fractured medium having a regular two- or three-dimensional fracture network is presented. The application of the technique and some of the practical implications arising from an examination of contaminant migration in fractured systems is discussed. Particular consideration is given to the effects of Darcy velocity, fracture spacing, matrix porosity, dispersivity and the mass of contaminant available for transport. The implications of uncertainty with respect to fracture opening size and ground-water velocity is also discussed and it is shown that provided one can obtain a reasonable estimate of the hydraulic gradient and hydraulic conductivity for the rock mass, uncertainty regarding the magnitude of the opening size and the groundwater velocity does not have a significant effect on predicted contaminant migration for the class of problems being considered.

Notizen: The problem of ill-conditioning in anisotropic and heterogeneous flow regions using plane and axisymmetric conditions is studied. A new concept, conditioning ratio, which covers all the possible factors significantly affecting the problem of ill-conditioning (e.g. aspect ratio, heterogeneity and anisotropy) is proposed. It has been shown that there is an upper limit for this conditioning ratio, beyond which the stiffness matrix of the modelled region will be ill-conditioned. Using this limiting value and considering the fact that flow behaviour in a single fracture is, basically, independent of the value of permeability normal to the plane of the fracture, k1, a criterion is established to calculate the value of k1 for thin elements. By adopting this criterion the problem of ill-conditioning could be avoided, regardless of the value of the aspect ratio. The reliability of the proposed criterion is examined by using thin elements with very large aspect ratio (up to 106) in modelling the pumping problem from a well fully intersecting a vertical fracture. The comparison of the numerical results with the available analytical solutions is found to be very satisfactory.

Notizen: A boundary element approach for time harmonic axisymmetric problems using the complete space point load fundamental solution is presented. The fundamental solution is integrated numerically along the azimuthal co-ordinate of each axisymmetric element. To increase the accuracy of the numerical integration a simple co-ordinate transformation is proposed. The approach is applied to the computation of the dynamic stiffness functions of rigid circular foundations on layered viscoelastic soils. Three different sites are considered: a uniform half-space, a soil layer on a half-space, and a soil consisting of four horizontal layers and a compliant half-space. The numerical results obtained by the proposed approach for surface circular foundations are very close to corresponding published results obtained by different procedures.

Notizen: A spherical cavity expansion model has been used to study the bearing capacity of foundations on calcareous and silica sands. Two constitutive models have been used to represent each sand: an elastoplastic, collapse-softening model, and a computationally simpler, elastic/perfectly plastic material. The predictions of the limit pressures for spherical cavity expansion are compared with laboratory data on the bearing capacities obtained from model footing tests. It is shown that the numerical predictions of the limit pressures correlate well with the experimental values of bearing capacity, particularly at higher effective overburden pressures.

Notizen: A solution is derived for the heat flow and consolidation which occur when a heat source is buried deep in a porous thermoelastic soil having anisotropic flow properties. This solution is used to examine the pore pressure generation and dissipation near both point and cylindrical heat sources. An increase in temperature will tend to generate an increase in excess pore pressure. However, the pore water will tend to flow from regions of high excess pore pressure to regions of low excess pore pressure, and so consolidation will occur, and temperature-generated excess pore pressures will tend to dissipate. Many natural soils exhibit horizontal layering and so have a higher horizontal than vertical permeability. It is shown that in soils the excess pore pressure generated by a heat source is significantly less than that in an isotropic soil having an equal vertical permeability.

Notizen: This paper is a continuation of a previous one on bifurcation of deep boreholes under uniform stress at infinity,1 and it focuses on the effect of borehole radius on borehole stability. Rock is described by the equations of a deformation theory of plasticity for cohesive-frictional, incompressible materials with Cosserat structure. The inhomogeneous bifurcation problem is formulated and the corresponding eigenvalue problem is solved numerically by the finite element method. It is demonstrated that the combined Cosserat and stress-gradient effects lead to an increase of the bifurcation stress with decreasing borehole radius (scale effect).

Notizen: Semi-analytic solutions are developed for the migration of pollutants from cylindrical and spherical repositories buried deep in a homogeneous and isotropic soil in the presence of a uniform and unidirectional advection. The techniques adopted involves taking the Laplace transform of the governing equations, finding an analytic solution in transform space and then numerically inverting the transform to obtain the concentrations of the contaminants at selected positions and times. Numerical results are presented, and practical implications discussed.

Notizen: The problem of the axial loading of a rigid disk-shaped anchor plate embedded in an isotropic elastic medium of infinite extent is examined. At the boundary of the disk anchor plate the elastic medium contains a cracked region of finite extent. The presence of the cracked region decreases the elastic stiffness of the anchor plate. The mathematical formulation of the problem is developed, and a numerical scheme is presented which can be used to solve the resulting coupled integral equations. The numerical technique is used to evaluate the results, which illustrate the manner in which the elastic stiffness of the anchor plate is influenced by the extent of cracking. Similar results are developed for the flaw shearing mode stress intensity factor at the external boundary of the cracked region.

Notizen: An understanding of the fracture mechanics of geomaterials is important for the solution of many problems in geomechanics. One of the most important material properties involved in fracture mechanics is the fracture toughness, KIc. The short-rod test configuration proposed by Barker1 has significant potential for becoming a standard test for fracture toughness determination in geomechanics. The purpose of this brief is to examine the application potential of the short-rod test for geomechanics problems.

Notizen: A finite element model is proposed for studying the seismic response of a flexible retaining wall/soil system. The model accounts for nonlinear hysteretic soil behaviour, and also for the increase in lateral stresses and settlement related to grain slip caused by cyclic loads. The response computed by the proposed method was compared with responses recorded at the Cambridge centrifuge facility, and found to be in reasonable agreement. The model was then used to identify the importance of factors such as flexibility of the wall and relative density of the backfill. The study reveals that the maximum bending moments given by current design procedures are nonconservative for stiffer walls. Deflections of flexible walls are of major concern. Flexible walls supporting a sand of medium density yield the greatest deflection.

Notizen: The use of the limit equilibrium method for the analysis of a dam foundation with a weak shear seam has many limitations. There is further uncertainty in such an analysis by this method when the seam is intercepted by a concrete key. The finite element method is the best alternative means of analysing such problems. In this paper, the finite element analysis of the Karjan Dam (India) foundation, which has a shear seam, is presented with and without the foundation treatment (i.e. the concrete key). The seam is simulated by joint elements. It has been found that a concrete key located near the toe of the dam significantly improves the stability of the foundation.

Notizen: This paper provides the theoretical basis for a forward numerical model of rock block systems. This method was developed to compute stress, strain, sliding and opening of rock blocks; rigid body movement and deformation occur simultaneously. Input data consist of block geometry, loading forces, the deformability constants E and v, and the restraint or boundary conditions of the block system. Output data give the movements, deformations, stresses and strains of each block, and the sliding and detachment or rejoining of blocks. The forces acting on each block, from external loading or contact with other blocks, satisfy the equilibrium equations. Equilibrium is also achieved between external forces and the block stresses. Furthermore, this analysis fulfills constraints of no tension between blocks and no penetration of one block into another. To acheive equilibrium and satisfy these constraints, simultaneous equations are solved repeatdly with partial changes of the coefficients each time the contact constraints are chosen.

Notizen: Finite element and finite difference solid mechanics computer programs have often been observed to overestimate the stiffness of an elastic beam or the collapse load in elasto-plastic problems. There are a number of ways of overcoming these difficulties but many lead to unwanted degrees of freedom in the mesh which continuously degrade the solution if the errors are allowed to accumulate. These unwanted distortions are referred to as spurious or hour-glass modes, and special measures have to be taken if accurate predictions are to be achieved without their appearance. In this paper a new scheme based on assumed strains at the element level is described in the context of a two-dimensional, explicit, finite difference program. The scheme is compared with an earlier solution to this problem and is shown to have some advantages, particularly when irregular meshes and/or large deformations are encountered. Thorough testing indicates that the new formulation passes the patch test and leads to accurate predictions of bending stiffnesses and plastic collapse loads. An underlying consideration of the development was that the new scheme should be applicable to three-dimensional calculations. Although this has not been tested numerically, the extension to three dimensions is discussed.

Notizen: Many of the existing pore pressure models for FEM analysis are limited either to cases where the pore pressure component produced by the shearing stress is neglected (usually restricted to static analysis) or where the component produced by the mean confining stress is disregarded (usually restricted to cyclic loading, as in earthquake and offshore engineering). A pore pressure model including the simultaneous effects of shear and mean confining stresses is presented in this paper. The model is simple and applicable to static as well as cyclic loading. The conceptual relationship between strains and pore pressure is well recognized in soil mechanics; however, it is difficult to determine the strains by FEM with the necessary accuracy to ensure satisfactory pore pressure predictions, mainly in the range of strains where the concepts of stress path are best applicable. To overcome this limitation, the proposed technique introduces a pore pressure function, to be coupled to a potential and a loading function in an elastic - plastic constitutive model. For simplicity, it is assumed that the pore pressure response can be satisfactorily represented by a path dependent calibrating function determined to fit experiments over a given range of confining pressures. This procedure allows the independent determination of the pore pressure increment before the iterative elastic - plastic procedure is activated, thus supplying the constitutive model directly with the appropriate direction and magnitude of the effective stress increment. The advantages of this procedure during undrained loading are presented in the text.

Notizen: A numerical technique has been implemented to perform strain path analyses for arbitrary three-dimensional (3D) penetrometers. The technique is based on that developed in aeronautical engineering for the calculation of incompressible potential flows about arbitrary 3D, non-lifting bodies. It uses a source-density distribution on the surface of the body and solves for the distribution necessary to make the normal component of fluid velocity zero on the boundary. The surface of a 3D body is approximated by a series of plane quadrilaterals, and the integral equation for the source density is replaced by a set of linear algebraic equations which are then solved for the source densities on the quadrilaterals. The displacements and strains are eventually derived based on these source densities. A series of strain-path analyses have been performed for cone and flat dilatometer penetrations. Results show that the soil responses to these two types of penetrometers are fundamentally different.

Notizen: This communication investigates the effect of permeability variation on free convection flow and heat transfer in a porous medium bounded by a vertical porous wall. A transverse periodic variation in permeability is considered to study the effect on heat transfer rate and skin friction. The problem becomes three-dimensional due to the variation in permeability. Analytical expressions for velocity, temperature, skin friction and rate of heat transfer are obtained using the perturbation technique. Effects of permeability and suction parameters on skin friction and heat transfer is studied and it is found that the increase in permeability creates a higher heat transfer rate and greater skin friction. However, the increase in suction parameter causes the skin friction values to decrease. The results obtained will be useful in the design of steam displacement processes in oil recovery and various geothermal systems.

Notizen: A closed-form analysis for elastic - plastic response of a circular hole in an infinite Mohr - Coulomb medium under axisymmetric loading shows the effect of repeated loading on the stress and displacement fields around the hole. Examples show how repeat-load closure increment is affected by working load, internal pressure, material compressive strength and internal friction. The solution is used to predict results of a laboratory test performed on a rock simulant specimen that contained a reinforced hole. Analytical and laboratory results are similar: at small closures (a few per cent, but well into the plastic response range), the closure increment from an unload - reload cycle is small compared with the initial closure. Closure increments for each of several cycles are comparable and cumulative.

Notizen: A simple model for compaction of a sand, that may be useful in various geotechnical applications is presented. The model has been formulated in terms of the cyclic stress and strain amplitudes. The compaction properties of a dry sand are characterized by a common compaction curve described by two coefficients. The second aim of this paper is to show some applications of the theory proposed. The attention has been restricted to the two extreme cases of practical importance, namely to the behaviour of a dry sand (or a saturated sand but in free draining conditions), and to the behaviour of saturated sand in undrained conditions. Some numerical algorithms showing how to deal with those problems are presented and illustrated on the following examples: settlement and pore pressure generation in a soil stratum subjected to an earthquake, settlement of a foundation, pore pressure generation and liquefaction in a sea-bed.The results obtained suggest that the model proposed, as well as a method of dealing with boundary value problems can serve as a useful tool for the analysis of a sandy subsoil subjected to cyclic loadings.

Notizen: A highly efficient technique is presented for the finite element analysis of stresses around underground openings surrounded by an infinite extent of linearly elastic rock mass. The effect of unbounded rock is incorporated in the analysis by using elastic supports around the finite element model. Expressions for stiffnesses of the elastic supports are derived and these are found to depend on the location of elastic supports, the shear modulus and Poisson's ratio of the rock, and the ratio of horizontal to vertical initial stresses. With the use of the proposed technique, the extent of the finite domain to be considered in the analysis is highly reduced. This results in a great computational advantage. The other principal merit of the proposed technique is that a standard finite element code for stress analysis may be used without making any modification. Results of some numerical tests are reported to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method. The technique has the potential of being applied to more complex problems of unbounded domains in geomechanics.

Notizen: Numerical examples are given which illustrate the poor performance of conventional finite elements in problems involving strain localization in frictional materials. In one of the cases investigated, that of granular media subjected to plane strain biaxial loading, isoparametric elements are seen to inhibit localization altogether. With these examples by way of motivation, the performance of a recently proposed finite element method in the context of strain localization in frictional materials is assessed, with particular emphasis on three-dimensional problems. In passing, some issues pertaining to the post-bifurcation response of biaxial specimens are examined. In particular, the numerical simulations suggest that the observed softening is a geometrical effect not attributable to constitutive behaviour.

Notizen: A simple and inexpensive laboratory device has been developed and used to simulate the behaviour of a dry underclay beam as the floor of an underground roadway subjected to a uniformly distributed uplift pressure. The Airy stress function method proved to be a useful means of expressing and predicting of the uplift of such beams. This method has been related to both classical beam theory and laboratory investigations. It was found that the Airy stress function method, utilizing polynomial equations, provides a closer fit to the mechanism of beam deformation and stress developments under dry laboratory conditions.

Notizen: This paper presents a general method of key block analysis for cylindrical surfaces with numerous real or statistically produced joint traces. General tunnel curves, analytically represented, are unrolled to yield a ‘developed view’ on which the joint traces are continuous curves. Then, using extended block theory, the maximum key block regions are delimited from the curved polygons of the unrolled joint trace map. The methods discussed here apply to a cylindrical tunnel of any shape in section and in any orientation, including inclined tunnels and shafts. The trace maps for which the method applies can be generated statistically, as described herein, or surveyed from real traces on exposed tunnel walls. A brief introduction to the basic theory about tunnel key blocks is provided here so that this paper can be understood without reference to other papers on block theory.

Notizen: This paper describes a technique for computing rigorous upper bounds on limit loads under conditions of plane strain. The method assumes a perfectly plastic soil model, which is either purely cohesive or cohesive-frictional, and employs finite elements in conjunction with the upper bound theorem of classical plasticity theory. The computational procedure uses three-noded triangular elements with the unknown velocities as the nodal variables. An additional set of unknowns, the plastic multiplier rates, is associated with each element. Kinematically admissible velocity discontinuities are permitted along specified planes within the grid. The finite element formulation of the upper bound theorem leads to a classical linear programming problem where the objective function, which is to be minimized, corresponds to the dissipated power and is expressed in terms of the velocities and plastic multiplier rates. The unknowns are subject to a set of linear constraints arising from the imposition of the flow rulé and velocity boundary conditions. It is shown that the upper bound optimization problem may be solved efficiently by applying an active set algorithm to the dual linear programming problem.Since the computed velocity field satisfies all the conditions of the upper bound theorem, the corresponding limit load is a strict upper bound on the true limit load. Other advantages include the ability to deal with complicated loading, complex geometry and a variety of boundary conditions. Several examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the procedure.

Notizen: The coupled diffusion and deformation phenomena induced by the opening of a hydraulic fracture in a poroelastic medium are modelled using an extension of the displacement discontinuity method. This method consists in distributing fluid source and poroelastic displacement discontinuity singularities along the locus of the fracture, and over time. As an illustration, the problem of a suddenly pressurized crack in an infinite formation is examined.

Notizen: A simple and efficient method for the solution of uncoupled transient thermoelastic problems using boundary integral techniques is presented. The method employs a Laplace transformation to remove temporarily the time dependence of the governing equations. Numerical analysis is then carried out in the transform space, and results in the time-position space are found by numerical inversion of the Laplace transform. The method has the advantage that it avoids time-stepping and the costly evaluation of domain integrals. Boundary element and analytic solutions are compared, and the effect of cooling on the stresses around a deep underground opening is examined.

Notizen: A finite element method for simulating excavation in elastoplastic soils which produces a ‘unique’ solution for any number of excavation stages is presented. The proposed method satisfies the uniqueness principle for elastic materials postulated by Ishihara,1 and degenerates to the methods presented in the ADINA code2, 3 and by Brown and Booker4 and Ghaboussi and Pecknold5 for the simple elastic cases. The non-linear (elastoplastic) finite element equations are derived from a variational formulation which accounts for time-varying problem domain and boundaries. The roots of these non-linear equations are solved by Newton's method, using the notion of the consistent tangent operator proposed by Simo and Taylor6 in conjunction with a numerical algorithm based on the ‘radial-return’ concept for integrating stresses.7-9 Numerical examples demonstrate that in the elastic case the solution to problems involving a ‘shrinking’ (excavation) or ‘expanding’ (fill) domain is superposable and does not depend on the number of construction stages. For a monotonically shrinking elastoplastic domain and the von Mises and Drucker - Prager yield models, it is shown that the proposed method also produces a ‘unique’ solution independent of the number of excavation stages. Finally, the asymptotic quadratic convergence exhibited by the proposed method is demonstrated to show the efficiency engendered by the technique described.

Notizen: For discrete materials like sands, the continuum field variables, stress and strain, are defined in terms of micro-level quantities by considering the deformation mechanism of granular soils from a microscopic point of view. Under the application of load, soil is considered to deform due to the movement relative to each other of clusters of particles. Based on this deformation mechanism, the kinematics of soils are developed and a strain tensor for granular soils, in terms of local displacements and geometric measures, is introduced. A local constitutive law relating local displacements and local tractions is defined. Using the local constitutive law, the relationships between stress and strain for the media are developed. The developed model incorporates the influence of strain hardening and material anisotropy on the deformation behaviour of the media. Comparisons of the model predictions and experimental results from tests conducted in cubical and hollow cylinder devices are presented.

Notizen: The stiffness characteristics of a packing of granules are influenced by the particle interactions at contacts, the void ratio, the co-ordination number and the packing structure. A stress-strain relationship for the packings of spheres is presented. The relationship explicitly includes the contact force-displacement law and the parameters characterizing the packing structure. The initial moduli computed using this relationship are compared with experimental measurements and empirical equations for sands. The theoretical results are also compared with experimental results on packings of glass balls. Closed-form solutions are derived for statistically isotropic packings under initial isotropic stress conditions. Numerical solutions for the stiffness properties are obtained for anisotropic initial stress conditions and anisotropic packing structures.

Notizen: The paper is concerned with the solution and determination of the optimum shape of a retaining wall modelled by the co-ordinates of a set of points which belongs to a certain permissible space. An optimum design method is formulated as a non-linear multiobjective optimization problem. The following two objective functions, which are mutually conflicting and non-commensurable with each other, are considered: (a) to minimize the total weight of the wall, (b) to maximize the structure stability.A set of Pareto optimum solutions is derived numerically by adopting a logical algorithm, and a Pereto optimum solution is obtained by investigating the trade-off relationships among design objectives.

Notizen: There are many expressions proposed for the permeability of isotropic media based on flow channel and pore size distribution concepts, but there are no such expressions for anisotropic media. In this paper an expression for the permeability of an anisotropic medium is proposed, which has been verified in the laboratory. The mechanism behind fluid flow through soil was investigated using microscopic computer simulations to propose an expression for macroscopic permeability. The soil was assumed to be a spatially periodic porous medium, and the Navier-Stokes equation was solved using the FEM with appropriate boundary conditions for several different arrangements of the porous medium. The basic variables influencing flow through soil at the microscopic level were identified as specific surface area, void ratio, particle shape, material heterogeneity and the arrangement of particles in a porous medium. A sensitivity analysis was carried out to obtain an expression for the permeability in terms of the above variables. The corresponding macroscopic variables for the above microscopic variables are average specific surface area, average void ratio, anisotropy, tortuosity due to material heterogeneity, and the arrangement of particles respectively. An expression for the directional permeability is proposed in terms of these variables for the most common occurrence of particles in a porous medium. For the verification of the proposed equation, the permeability values of a fine-grained sand were measured at different void ratios and were compared with those predicted by the proposed equation. The results show that the predicted permeability values from the proposed equation are very close to the measured values.

Notizen: This paper presents the results of an investigation of the static earth pressure behind a gravity wall with dry cohesionless backfill. A comparison is made between the results of finite element analyses and those of several experimental studies on wall models. The results of the investigation indicate that current design methods do not account adequately for some parameters that may influence the magnitude and distribution of the earth pressure. The study shows also that the design of earth-retaining structures should be based on the amount of displacement permitted in the structure.

Notizen: A soil-reinforcement load transfer model was developed by the authors1 to simulate the response of the reinforced soil material to triaxial compression and direct shearing. This paper presents the application of the proposed model for the numerical analysis of direct shear tests on sand samples reinforced with different types of tension resisting reinforcements. A parametric study is conducted to evaluate the effect of the mechanical characteristics and dilatancy properties of the soil, extensibility (elastic modulus) of the reinforcements, and their inclination with respect to the failure surface on the response of the reinforced soil material to direct shearing. An attempt is made to verify the proposed model by comparing numerical test simulations with experimental results reported by Jewell,2 and Gray and Ohashi.3 Comparisons of predicted and experimental results illustrate that the model can provide adequate simulations of the response of the reinforced soil material to shearing. In particular, it allows an evaluation of the effect of soil dilatancy (or contractancy), and extensibility of the reinforcement on tension forces generated in inclusions during shearing.

Notizen: A quasi-Newton algorithm is implemented for the solution of multi-dimensional, linear consolidation problems. The study is motivated by the need to implement an efficient equation-solving technique for the solution of large systems of equations typical in problems of consolidation of saturated porous media. The proposed procedure obviates the need to reassemble and re-factorize the global coefficient matrix every load increment, albeit the time step may be held variable in the analysis. The method employs the combined techniques of ‘line search’ and BFGS updates applied to the coupled equations. A numerical example is presented to show that the proposed method is computationally more efficient than the conventional direct equation-solving scheme, particularly when solving large systems of finite element equations.

Notizen: Results are presented for three-dimensional planar fracture propagation in the presence of variations in confining stress, reservoir properties and frac-fluid viscosity when the well-bore pressure is constant throughout the frac-job. Solid rock deformation during the frac-job is described by the dislocation method with singular integral equations, and the fluid flow in the fracture is represented by the finite element method. A convergence study is undertaken on the three-dimensional numerical model, and good agreement is obtained with results from laboratory tests and from the simpler circular model.

Notizen: Attention is focused on the mechanical behaviour of rock-like materials. Developments and applications of a constitutive model based on damage theory are presented. The internal damage model is calibrated for a hard brittle rock, Bushveld Norite, and through this process the identification of the material parameters is carried out. Emphasis is placed on the identification of the material parameters in the damage evolution law. The uniqueness of solutions in the softening regime is investigated through finite element mesh sensitivity studies of non-uniform deformation triaxial compression tests.

Notizen: The subject of this paper is the nonlinear analysis of heat and moisture transfer in partly saturated soil. In particular, an extension of the previous work of the author to two-dimensional applications is presented. Problems of greater complexity and engineering significance can hence be solved. The theoretical basis of the problem is first outlined before the two-dimensional formulation of the numerical solution is given. The finite element method is employed to give the spatial distributions of the variables, with a finite difference scheme being used to predict the temporal variations. The method allows the nonlinear nature of the soil parameters to be modelled, predictions being given of the coupled transient simultaneous transfer of heat and volumetric moisture content. The two-dimensional nature of the work is illustrated for the case of surface evaporative soil moisture losses from sloping ground. Subsoil conditions of a uniform deposit of loam are considered with values of representative material parameters assumed after a literature search. The coupled nature of heat and mass transfer is illustrated by means of an analysis of the moisture migration patterns that occur. Two-dimensional moisture flow, out of and into the soil, is shown to take place.

Notizen: A numerical approach to bifurcation problems in soil mechanics is described. After locating the bifurcation point by a combination of an incremental-iterative loading procedure and an eigenvalue analysis of the tangent stiffness matrix, the solution is continued on the localization path by a suitable combination of the fundamental solution and the eigenvector belonging to the lowest eigenvalue. The procedures are applied in a bifurcation analysis of a cohesionless soil in a biaxial testing device. The results suggest that a diffuse bifurcation mode with a short wavelength is encountered whereupon a shear band gradually develops. The inclination angle of the shear band compares well with analytical formulae and with empirical data.

Notizen: Results of both triaxial and direct shear tests on reinforced soil samples performed by different investigators have shown that soil dilatancy and extensibility of the reinforcements have a significant effect on the generated tension forces in the inclusions. An appropriate soil--reinforcement load transfer model, integrating the effect of soil dilatancy and reinforcement extensibility is therefore needed to adequately predict forces in the inclusions under expected working loads. This paper present a load transfer model assuming an elastoplastic strain hardening behaviour for the soil and an elastic--perfectly plastic behaviour for the reinforcement. This model is used to analyse the response of the reinforced soil material under triaxial compression loading. A companion paper present the application of this model for numerical simulations of direct shear tests on sand samples reinforced with different types of tension resisting reinforcements. The model allows an evaluation of the effect of various parameters such as mechanical characteristics and dilatancy properties of the soil, extensibility of the reinforcements, and their inclination with respect to the failure surface, on the development of resisting tensile stresses in the reinforcements. A parametric study is conducted to evaluate the effect of these parameters on the behaviour of the reinforced soil material. An attempt is also made to verify the proposed model by comparing numerical predictions with available experimental results of both triaxial and direct shear tests on reinforced soil samples. This model can be used for analysis and design of reinforced soil walls with different types of tension resisting inclusions to predict tension forces under expected working loads.

Notizen: Deficiencies of different existing models on ‘Reservoir Induced Seismicity’ have been discussed and a new mathematical model, which enhances a better understanding of triggering mechanism in terms of changes in effective stresses, in situ stresses and water level variations, has been discussed in this paper. In the model fractured rock is simulated by a fluid-filled elastic material subject to Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. The model has been found to be capable of responding effectively to site specific attributes. It can recognize and explain the phenomenon of time lag observed in several actual cases. It is also capable of simulating stabilization of rock-reservoir system after a period of activities that follow the initial stage of filling. One dimensional and two dimensional, isotropic and anisotropic cases have been analysed and the model predictions have been found to agree qualitatively with the field observations.

Notizen: This paper presents the application of an advanced BEM for periodic and transient dynamic stress analyses of a class of geomechanics problems. For transient dynamic analysis, the problem is first solved in the Laplace transform space, which happens to be similar to the periodic dynamic analysis, and then the time domain solution is obtained by numerical inversion of transform domain solutions. The numerical implementation of the BEM used to present the results in this paper is complete and most general available to date. It is capable of treating very large, multi-layered problems by substructuring and satisfying the equilibrium and compatibilities at the interfaces. With the help of this substructuring, capability problems related to layered media and soil-structure interaction have been analysed. A number of examples are presented and through comparisons with available analytical and numerical results, the applicability and usefulness of the present analysis to real geomechanical problems are established.

Notizen: The evolution of a gravity-driven free-surface flow of varying horizontal extent which couples with a field evolving within the flow is solved using a finite difference discretization of a mapping of the problem onto the unit square. Since the size of the solution domain may show several orders of magnitude of variation, while the normalized geometry of the domain and the internal field may not vary significantly, this procedure avoids excessively fine or coarse discretizations, as well as interpolations at the boundary. The parabolic and hyperbolic evolution equations for the internal field are considered. The evolution of the coupled system is solved by an implicit marching scheme. The discretizations in space and in time are accurate to second order. Multipoint upwinding is used to avoid an instability arising advective terms are large. The evolution equations are nonlinear, and are solved using a nested Newton-Raphson procedure. The nesting is achieved by using successively better approximations to the ture evolution equations. The matrix equation that arises is solved by a conjugate-gradient-like (ORTHOMIN) iteration procedure with an incomplete Cholesky factorization preconditioning. The method has a wide variety of potential applications in the earth sciences, with the ability to describe glacier flow, lava flow, avalanching and landslides. Some calculations of the thermomechanical evolution of ice-sheets are given as illustrations, and the possible existence of thermally induced instabilities is considered.

Notizen: The axisymmetric problem of flexure of a centrally loaded or uniformly loaded thin-elastic plate resting on or buried in a transversely isotropic elastic half-space is solved using a constraint variational scheme. A fundamental solution corresponding to a unit vertical pressure acting over an annular region in the interior of the half-space which is derived through the application of Hankel integral transforms is used to evaluate the strain energy of the elastic half-space. The deflected shape of the plate is represented by a power series of radial coordinate together with a term corresponding to a concentrated load derived from classical plate theory. The coefficients of the power series representation, which could be considered as generalized coordinates corresponding to the interaction problem, are determined through the minimization of a constraint energy functional. The energy functional consists of the strain energies of the plate and half-space, the potential of the applied loads and a term corresponding to plate edge boundary conditions incorporated with a penalty number. The entire formulation is developed as a convenient and flexible matrix solution scheme. The numerical stability and convergence of the solution scheme are established, and the response of the plate is investigated over a range of relative rigidities of practical interest.

Notizen: A computational method, based on an advanced elasto-plastic large strain formulation, well suited for the analysis of the cone penetration problem, is presented.A new approach of finite strain elasto-plastic analysis is employed.13 The basic (non-rate) constitutive relations are developed in a spatial reference space to preserve their physical significance. They are subsequently transformed in Lagrangian co-ordinates, and through simple time differentiation, their rate equations are introduced. The method is computationally implemented with the finite element method and special provisions are taken to allow for the moving boundary conditions of the problem.

Notizen: Biot's dynamic equations of motion for one-dimensional wave propagation in a fluid-saturated linear elastic isotropic soil are solved using Laplace transformation followed by numerical inversion and the results compared with a direct finite element formulation. A soil column of finite dimension subjected to velocity boundary conditions is analysed, allowing for reflection of waves from boundaries. Comparison of time histories at given points along the column shows that the finite element solution gives good agreement with the Laplace transform solution for low as well as high drag.

Notizen: Previous field and laboratory studies have shown that the creation of a borehole in a saturated cohesive soil mass induces significant pore water suctions in the vicinity of the hole. The dissipation of these pore water suctions (swelling) leads to local increases in the moisture content and hence a softening of the soil around the hole. This softening may have important consequences for the stability of the hole and also for the ultimate load capacity of any foundation elements (bored piles or drilled shafts) constructed in these holes. This paper presents a semi-analytical solution for the radial dissipation of pore water pressure around a freshly created, vertical hole. It is assumed the soil deforms elastically during the swelling process. The solutions are presented in the form of isochrones of excess pore water pressure and may be used to obtain estimates of the time required for the soil around the hole to swell and therefore to soften. Both permeable and impermeable borehole interfaces have been considered, together with either no support for the hole or partial support provided by hydrostatic pressure within the hole.

Notizen: A computational technique for earth penetration is presented which includes the direct coupling between the deformable target model and a deformable model of the penetrator. In this fully Lagrangian approach, both the target and penetrator are discretized to represent the anticipated terradynamic and structural responses. A sliding interface is used between the two models to provide the time-dependent terradynamic-to-penetrator interaction. This technique has the unique advantage of including the target-to-penetrator interaction in one calculation in a continuous and consistent manner. Comparisons of calculated penetration with full-scale field test data are given.

Notizen: Boundary integral equations for traction boundary-value problems of two-dimensional elastostatics are derived by the indirect boundary element method. Quadratic variation functions for the representation of geometry, fictitious forces and displacements over each boundary element are described. A system of equations approximating to the boundary integral equations is obtained by a Galerkin formulation in which the integral equation is written at Gauss integration points of elements. The method of computation of the Cauchy principal value is described. Examples of application to the analysis of stress and displacement around underground excavations demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the formulation.

Notizen: Wave propagation problems, such as blasting for excavation of a new tunnel oriented perpendicular to an existing tunnel, are truly three dimensional in nature. Dynamic finite element analysis with three-dimensional elements is, however, very expensive. The cheaper and simpler alternative would be to model the problem approximately in two dimensions. This paper shows that dynamic finite element analysis of such problems using conventional two-dimensional plane strain elements produces responses which are erroneously excessive. This is accredited to the inability to the inability of the two-dimensional elements to correctly model the rapid attenuation of the amplitudes of the outward propagating waves. To overcome this problem, a pseudo-plane strain concept is introduced and has been found to be a viable alternative. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the application of the concept.

Notizen: The concept that the flow of granular materials is governed by shear on certain critical planes is used to formulate an elastic-plastic model. When the elastic strains are neglected, the Double Shearing model becomes identical to the rigid-plastic model of de Josselin de Jong which he named the Double Sliding model. After a discussion of the model, the small strain formulation is used to describe general boundary-value problems. A comparison is then made between the coaxial Mohr-Coulomb yielding and the Double Shearing model on the basis of several numerical simulations. The non-coaxiality of the axes of principal plastic strain rate and principal stress in the Double Shearing model leads to essentially different behaviour for stress rotations in comparison to the coaxial model. The Double Shearing model predicts in general lower limit loads because, for a given state of stress, it allows for several possible directions of plastic flow rather than a unique direction which derives from a plastic potential.

Notizen: To determine moisture movement and heat transfer through an unsaturated soil under temperature and volumetric water content gradients, it is necessary to have knowledge of phenomenological coefficients of the soil. However, in unsaturated flow, i.e. flow through unsaturated soil, these phenomenological coefficients are not constants, but vary with volumetric water content as well as temperature. In this paper, an identification technique is proposed for evaluation of the phenomenological coefficients. The phenomeno-logical coefficients are first assumed to be certain kinds of functions of volumetric water content and temperature. The choice of the functional forms is based on an understanding of the physical situation, and previous knowledge of water flow in the isothermal case. The constant parameters associated with the functional forms are evaluated through the use of the identification technique. Once these phenomenological coefficients are obtained as certain functions of the volumetric water content and the temperature for a specified soil, analysis of coupled moisture flow and heat transfer in the unsaturated soil can proceed.

Notizen: The processes underlying pile installation by vibratory loading rather than impact loading are complex. However, numerical studies using simple models for soil behaviour do throw some light on the basic dynamic processes involved. As better soil models become widely used, quantitative analyses using the techniques described, or simplifications of them, should be feasible.

Notizen: The analysis of measured stress waves for the prediction of static pile capacity is described. The usual method of using the measured velocity record as the input boundary condition in a wave equation analysis with a finite element model, if not properly implemented, can lead to significant numerical errors. An alternative scheme using an accurate prescribed displacement procedure with the measured displacement record (obtained from the integration of the velocity) is proposed, and is shown to be very efficient. These aspects of the numerical modelling procedure are illustrated by a case study.

Notizen: An earth dam was to be constructed on a site which posed non-uniform foundation conditions. The most prominent feature was a vertical contact between unweathered quartzite and decomposed diabase running parallel to the valley. The paper describes a two-dimensional finite element analysis on the foundation and embankment to determine relative settlements and the possibility of hydraulic fracturing of the clay core. The analysis was extended to evaluate the effectiveness of site improvement measures such as excavation and recompaction of the decomposed diabase and elimination of the contact problem by blasting into the unweathered quartzite. Comparing results from the various analyses, it was concluded that the latter was the only viable solution to the problem.
