    Notes: One major problem encountered when using the finite element method to simulate the load-deformation behaviour of an elasto-plastic soil mass is that the theoretical collapse load is generally exceeded, and in some cases the numerical solution fails to exhibit a collapse load. A mixed variational principle is used as the basis for developing the governing equations of deformation and the results from this are compared with those obtained from the use of the virtual power equation. The former is found to give improved results and is generalized to include description of finite deformation. An Eulerian frame of reference is used. The method of approximating configuration changes in the numerical solution procedure is found to determine the shape of the load-deformation curve. Finally, a simple method of accounting for anisotropy of yield is presented.

    Notes: We continue our study of the consolidation of inhomogeneous clay soils with an analysis of the response of a soil mass, whose shear modulus increases linearly with depth, to axially symmetric pressure on its surface. This extends the work reported in Part I on the corresponding one-dimensional problem of a clay column, and generalizes researches of Gibson and coworkers on the elastic model of the soil (i.e., the initial response).Because of great mathematical complexity when Poisson's ratio is allowed to assume arbitrary values, we have confined ourselves (as did Gibson in several of his papers) to variations of the modulus from a zero surface value, this being in reasonable accord with published test results on London clay. The deflection of points within this region, the deflection relative to the central one (that is, the shape of the deformed loading area), as well as the absolute deflection of surface points exterior to the load.

    Notes: The settlement and excess pore pressure are calculated for a column of water-saturated clay in which the permeability and/or shear modulus vary with depth. Several fairly general laws of variation are investigated. In each case, the soil is assumed to have a permeable top surface and to rest on an impervious substrate.For all the variations examined, in which the shear modulus increases with depth below the surface but the permeability of the soil remains constant, the deflection at a given instant after imposition of the load decreases and the degree of settlement increases with increasing rate at which the change with depth takes place. It is found that, when the variation over the height of the column is one order of magnitude or less, the curve of degree-of-consolidation versus time is reasonably wellapproximated by the curve for a homogeneous soil whose modulus equals the depth-averaged value. When, in addition, the permeability decreases with depth, the approximation becomes less accurate.The same approximation, for moderate increase in shear modulus with depth, predicts satisfactorily the process of dissipation of excess pore pressure at a given depth, but breaks down when the variation in modulus is large.Finally, it is shown that the effect of variable modulus on the settlement is greater than of a comparable variation in permeability.

    Notes: The consolidation problem in a plane strain porous elastic medium is treated by adopting a consistent formulation of the finite element model. To this purpose, the fluid-phase behaviour is modelled in static terms through a piecewise linear description of the pore pressure field and the behaviour of the two-phase medium is consistently modelled through rigorously equilibrated piec̰ewise linear stress distribution.Incompressibility of the pore fluid and of the skeleton grains is assumed, as is linear elastic behaviour of the solid phase.After a compact description of the model, the governing equations for the continuum problem are recalled and the solution system for the discretized problem is obtained following Galerkin's method of weighted residuals. Some examples are finally illustrated, in order to assess the reliability of the approach and to introduce possible comparisons with other methods.

    Notes: This paper examines the interaction between a rigid circular foundation resting in smooth contact with an isotropic elastic halfspace and a concentrated surface load which acts at a finite distance from the foundation. Owing to the action of the external load the rigid foundation experiences an extra settlement and a tilt. The expressions for the extra settlement and the tilt are evaluated in exact closed form. It is also shown that these deformations due to the external load satisfy Betti's reciprocal theorem. The auxiliary solution required for the application of the reciprocal theorem is derived from the analysis of the problem of a rigid circular foundation resting in smooth contact with an elastic medium and subjected to an eccentric load. The, results developed for the interaction between the rigid circular foundation and the external concentrated load are utilized to generate, among others, solutions for the settlement and tilt induced at a rigid foundation due to its interaction with uniformly or non-uniformly distributed loads with circular and square plan shapes.

    Notes: An anisotropic hardening model for sand or other granular materials is presented. The state of initial densification is represented by a configuration surface and the state of loading by a loading surface in the stress space.     Notes: We extend the well-known Houblt method for dynamic vibration problems to a class of methods suitable for a variable-order variable-step computer program implementation. We discuss the numerical stability properties of these methods and derive a family of extensions with improved stability properties. Finally we present some numerical results which compare a variety of Houbolt methods with other well-known Backward Differentiation methods, demonstrating in passing the practical value of the stability, concepts.

    Notes: A simple friction-contact interface element is introduced which simulates frictional slippage, separation, and re-bonding of two bodies initially mating at a common interface and subsequently deforming with an arbitrary static loading schedule. Constraint equations between initially mating node pairs and the general principle of virtual work are used to formulate the interface element for a finite element solution procedure. Some advantages of the interface element include; easy implementation intostandard finite element programs, direct determination of interface forces without round-off problems, and the generality afforded by the virtual work formulation to include other non-conservative models in the system.The application of the interface element to an idealized buried culvert problem illustrates that the model behaves properly. A second application, for a long-span culvert installation with incremental soil loading, demonstrates the importance of modelling slippage at the culvert-soil interface in order to conform with experimental observations.

    Notes: This paper presents the complete formulation for the application of the Boundary Element Method to solve non-tension material problems. The formulation is based on including an extra term due to an initial stress field into the boundary integral statement. This is then used to iterate the solution until a state of non-tension is achieved. The resulting iteration process is very simple to apply and basically consists only of a single matrix-vector product. The applications show that accurate resultscan be obtained for boundary discretizations involving a small number of unknowns. Whenever possible, results are compared with analytical solutions or finite elements.

    Notes: The work presents an exact expression for the Hankel transform of the surface displacement of a rigid circular body performing harmonic vertical vibrations on a homogeneous elastic half-space of arbitrary Poissn'S ratio interrupted at some depth by a frictionless horizontal plane. The limiting case of the uninterrupted half-space is recovered in each of the extreme cases when the frictionless plane coincides with the surface or sinks to an infinite depth. Furthermore, the static case is derived in the limiting case of zero frequency and it is shown that the result agrees with the limiting case of zero gradient shear modulus variation for the static case of the incompressible non-homogeneous half-space.It is also established that Poisson'S ratio effect is linear, and the important proposition is again sustained that only surface shear modulus dominates vibrations on elastic media whereas any other factor such as the interruption of the frictionless plane as in the present case, merely constitutes a negligible secondary parameter.

    Notes: For non-linear dynamic problems, it has been recognized that an explicit time-integration method of approach is a very efficient way of solving the dynamic equations of motion. The numerical formulation and computation for such problems fall into the two general categories of finite elements and finite differences. Over the years, there have been many arguments between schools which adopt the finite element approach and those which adopt the finite difference approach. At one extreme, arguments areconcerned with the superiority of each approach and at the other end of the spectrum the arguments are about which approach is a subset of the other. The most common of these arguments are concerned with efficiency and accuracy. This publication addresses the accuracy issue with specific reference to explicit calculations in which the analysis domain is discretized into triangular or quadrilateral plane-strain elements. It concludes that if the same basic assumptions are made in the two approaches, they, will give identical answers for problems in this category.

    Notes: A method is devised for measuring soil thermal diffusivity in situ. It is based on direct experimental simulation of the finite difference approximation to the one-dimensional heat conduction equation.The method does not require the soil to be homogeneous except between the three thermometers that are used, at depths z + d, z and z - d. Nor need the energy input curve be sinusoidal. However, it must be fairly smooth for the finite difference approximation to be accurate.Experimental results for London Clay are presented, obtained using thermometers at depths of 1, 6 and 11 cm to give a mean thermal diffusivity of 0.0074 cm2/s at a depth of 6 cm. This value is consistent with other estimates of diffusivity for clay soils.The method is capable of automation, and should be suitable for use on engineering sites, at low cost.The method is capable of generalization to other linear diffusion equations containing one independent parameter. The same limitation also applies to its application to constitutive or geometrical non-linear one dimensional diffusion equations, and each equation requires individual study to assess feasibility of use of the method.The method in effect uses the usual finite difference approximation, not to prepare a numerical solution, but to design an experiment carried out essentially within the finite difference ‘molecule’. The measured parameter of the diffusion equation is the usable product of the method.

    Notes: The pressure versus settlement response is highly non-linear for soils, in general. In the present study, a cubic equation of the type p = K1w - K2w3 is suggested to incorporate the non-linear behaviour. A trapezoidal footing with constant depth resting on a subgrade having non-linear response is analysed. The resulting fourth order non-linear differential equation with variable coefficients is solved by using the Galerkin technique and beam characteristic functions are employed to obtain faster convergence. The results are presented in the form of non-dimensional charts for valid ranges of footings and soil parameters.

    Notes: The calculus of variations is an attractive tool for the determination of critical slip surfaces, but there are unresoived difficulties in its application to plane strain problems. Here we consider the simpler problem of rectilinear flow under gravity or other constant body force. In particular we investigate the stability of an infinitely long slope of finite width for material with cohesion and internal friction. From a variational formulation, the differential equation of the critical slip surface is formulated. An explict solution of this equation is obtained, and hence we determine the critical slope angle in terms of the width of the slope and the material properties. The results are compared with those of an earlier limit analysis treatment.

    Notes: In this paper it is shown that the Jaumann stress rate is not accurate for moderate deformations with deviatoric strains of more than 10 per cent; in such cases the objective stress rate is better calculated using the material rotation rate as calculated by polar decomposition. For very large deformations of granular materials this approach becomes invalid too because then the fabric tends to rotate together with principal stresses. Apparently in general the fabric rotation of a granular material cannot be described by continuum mechanics alone. For the numerical calculation of the material rotation for moderate deformations a numerical subroutine, based on polar decomposition, has been developed.

    Notes: A three-dimensional finite element program has been prepared to study the behaviour of Infiernillo dam during construction and filling of the reservoir. A linear stress-strain behaviour of materials has been assumed. The parameters are deduced from the movements measured during construction, checked with the results of oedometer tests at the laboratory. The no tension strength of granular materials has been introduced following Zienkiewicz et al.9 Collapse of the upstream shell is introduced into the calculation in a simple way from the settlement observed upon flooding under constant stress at the oedometer.A good agreement is found between measured and calculated movements.

    Notes: On the basis of the correspondence principle of visco-elasticity, an application is discussed of the boundary integral equation method to the solution of time-dependent stress analysis problems. The adopted solution technique, in addition to the time-dependent stress and strain distributions, enables the determination of a measure of the error affecting the numerical results. The governing equations for the plane strain visco-elastic problem are derived with reference to a generalized Kelvin model consisting of the series of any number of simple kelvin elements, having both volumetric and deviatoric components. To get some insight into the overall performance of the technique, the results obtained in the solution of some test examples are discussed and compared with those dering from the available closed from solutions.

    Notes: An analytical solution to the problem of a load applied to a portion of the wall of a circular tunnel installed deep in a homogeneous isotropic material has been found. The solution is obtained by taking a Fourier transform, in the axial direction, of the field quantities and then representing these as a Fourier series in the polar angle.     Notes: A method is presented for obtaining the creep settlement of strip or circular loadings applied to horizontally layered soil profiles. The solution method involves applying a fourier (strip loading) or Hankel (circular loading) transform to the governing equations, which reduces the two of three dimensional problem to one involving a single spatial demension. This leads to great savings in computer storage and data preparation time, and since an exact solution may be found for each layer of material, the method has advantages over conventional finite layer techniques where field quantities must be approximated at a number of positions within each layer.The type of formulation presented hearein makies it possible to work in terms of the creep functions of the soil rather than the relaxation functions. This has distinct advantages, as it is often easier to measure the creep behaviour of a soil in the laboratory.Numerical techniques are used to invert the laplace and Hankel transforms and this means that any type of creep function (which is invertible) may be used to describe the material properties of the soil.

    Notes: A one-dimensional wave propagation method for earthquake response analysis of horizontally-layered sites of infinite lateral extent is adapted to account for the finite cross-sectional dimensions of an embankment dam overlying a foundation deposit which may be considered infinite in its lateral extent. The procedure is used to study the response of an existing embankment dam for an actual earthquake record. A two-dimensional dynamic finite element analysis is also performed for this case. The records of ground acceleration at an outcropping base rock and at the crest of the dam are available for the site.     Notes: In this paper the settlement of a rigid foundation supported by a layer of clay which has been stabilized with stone columns is considered. The results of an analytic solution for the settlement, assuming no yield occurs in the clay or columns, have been presented in a previous publication. This solution is now used to develop an interaction analysis which takes account of yielding within the stone columns.This interaction analysis is based on a number of plausible assumptions regarding the behaviour of the clay and columns. In order to check the validity of these assumptions elasto-plastic finite element analyses have been performed and the agreement between the two methods is very good. However, the computational effort required for the finite element analyses is many orders of magnitude greater than that for the interaction analysis.This analysis has been used to generate a number of parametric solutions which provide a basis for estimating the reduction in settlement of the foundation due to the stabilization of the clay.

    Notes: The current work uses Baiocchi's transformation to obtain heuristically a formulation of the inhomogeneous dam problem. When finite element methods are applied the finite dimensional problem is a variational inequality which may be solved to obtain approximate solutions. The main advantage of the method is that it uses a fixed mesh.The finite dimensional problem is solved by means of succesive overrelaxation with projection. Comparisons with previous analytical and, numerical solutions indicate accuracy within 10 per cent for a variety of test problems include wedge-shaped and envelope-shaped fractures, laminar and turbulent flows, incompressible liquids and ideal gases, permeable and impermeable media, prescribed inlet pressure and prescribed flow rates. CPU time is typically a few seconds for a tenfold increase in fracture length. The method has been applied to explosively driven and propellant-driven gas fracturing problems as well as the traditional pump-driven hydraulic fracturing problem.

    Notes: This communication investigates the effects fo the non-Newtonian behaviour of the fracturing fluids in the hydraulic fracturing mechanism. These effects are illustrated on the propagation of a vertical hydraulic fracture into an oil reservoir, in which the fracturing fluid is of power law and of pseudo-plastic type. The analytical solutions for evaluating the fracture lengrhs are presented for the cdases of large fluid loss and for no fiuid loss. The results obtained should be useful in the design of fracture treatments, permitting the finding of the rheological properties of the injected fluid for obtaining the desired fracture length and width.

    Notes: Extension of numerical techniques to the analysis of fissure flow in three-dimensional rock masses of realistic complexity and extent constitutes an important facility in civil engineering and resource exploitation practice. Migration velocities of contaminants and fluid discharge will always be higher for a true three-dimensional network over a two-dimensional representation in that the effect of critical, out-of-plane intersections may be correctly accommodated. Revised direct boundary element formulations are developed that are capable of discretizing individual fissure discs and their intersections with adjacent fissures. Discretization coverage, by definition, is limited to the fissure edges and internal intersections, with this factor alone being a major advantage of the technique over the more conventionally utilized domain methods. Appropriate manipulation of the resulting set of equations is shown to yield a fully populated, positive definite, symmetric tensor representing the geometric conductivity of a single fissure disc. The retained degrees-of-freedom for the ‘super element’ are purely in terms of the fissure intersections with a minimum of 1 degree-of-freedom required per intersection. Global matrix assembly and solution is accomplished by standard finite element techniques, the global matrix being, in general, sparsely populated. The procedure is ideally suited to micro-computer solution in that a reduced degree-of-freedom system is obtained from a much larger and computationally, intractable system. The advantages of boundary solution procedures are realized with minimal data input requirements and effective representation of high potential gradients. The sparsely populated and symmetric from of the global matrix retains one of the more favourable assets of the secondary finite element formulation.

    Notes: The stability and deformation of the seafloor in response to storm wave loading is an important consideration in the design of pipelines, anchors, and offshore structures such as gravity-and pile-supported platforms. Two quite different approaches have been proposed for investigating the effects of storm waves on seafloor sands. These approaches derive from quite different considerations of soil-water interaction.In one of these approaches (exemplified by Yamamoto and Madsen) the seafloor is visualized to be a porous elastic or Coulomb-damped porous nonlinear medium. In this approach, the response of the seafloor, i.e. the displacements, stresses and porewater pressures, are computed for a given wave. The response is transient and is, therefore, related to the largest wave in the storm wave group.On the other hand, in the approach proposed by Seed and Rahman, only the development of residual porewater pressures (for estimating liquefaction potential) due to the storm wave group are considered. The effects of transient porewater pressures and stresses on the seafloor sands are ignored. The residual porewater pressures are computed using properties based on initial effective stresses through a porewater generation-dissipation model.The application of these techniques to problems of offshore structures such as pile-supported platforms has led to considerable uncertainty and confusion. In this paper, both of these approaches are combined to investigate seafloor response to a storm wave group. For typical storm wave conditions that exist in the North Sea, it appears that the inclusion of damping, inertia and anisotropic permeabilities in the study is not important relative to ocean sands. Parametric studies show that, for a given wave, the thickness and the stiffness properties of the soil deposit dictate the response of the deposit. The displacements in the deposit are, therefore, affected by the generation of residual porewater pressures.

    Notes: Theoretical formulations to the problem of expansion of spherical and cylindrical cavities in a layered elastic system are presented. The medium surrounding the cavity is assumed to consist of several layers, and each is idealized as a linear elastic solid. The solutions are expressed in matrix forms and can be obtained using a programmable calculator. The developed solutions are of some importance in geomechanics. The spherical cavity solution can be used to compute the settlement of single axially loaded piles. The predicted settlement using the analysis outlined herein agrees reasonably well with one case of field measurements. The cylindrical cavity solution can be used to manifest the effect of disturbed mass at the cavity wall on the stress-strain and deformation characteristics of the intact mass.

    Notes: The behaviour of an under-reamed anchor in a consolidating soil is examined by approximating the anchor as an impermeable circular plate embedded in a deep soil layer. Hankel and Laplace transforms are applied to the equations governing the consolidation process, and this greatly simplifies the equations, allowing a solution to be obtained for the transformed variables. Numerical inversion of both the Hankel and Laplace transforms is used to obtain the solution at any time.A particular feature of the solution method is that the unknown contact stress between the anchor and the soil and the unknown flows in the plane of the anchor are approximated as a series of simple functions with unknown coefficients. By determining the coefficients of the terms in the series, the complete solution may be found.Computations have been carried out using the method proposed, and results are presented for the time-settlement behaviour of an impermeable anchor. These results are compared with some published and some recomputed finite element data, and this highlights some of the difficulties encountered in using such numerical techniques.

    Notes: The stress solution in plasticity with an associated or a non-associated flow rule is considered. Upon fully implicit integration of the relevant constitutive relations the stress is obtained as the projection of the (fictitious) elastic stress onto the yield surface for given values of the hardening softening variables. This projection is defined, for a general non-associated flow rule, in adjusted complementary elastic energy, which becomes exactly the complementary energy when the flow rule is associated.Isotropic elasticity and mean-stress dependent isotropic yield criteria (pertinent to soil) are considered and the implications of a certain class of non-associated flow rules are evaluated. This class relates to dilatant (or contractant) materials and involves non-associated plastic volume change.     Notes: A physically motivated constitutive law for the behaviour of geologic discontinuities with dilatancy and contact surface degradation (damage) is presented. In the formulation of the law, the paper distinguishes between macroscopic and microscopic features of the contact surface. Through macroscope considerations. an incremental constitutive law is derived which is applicable to a large class of contact-friction problems. By idealizing the microstructure to consist of interlocking asperity surfaces, the constitutive equations are specialized for the description of rock joints including effects such as dilatancy, asperity surface degradation and bulking. Several examples are considered demonstrating the law's behaviour and agreement with experimental data. The incremental form of the equations that are derived are amenable to implementation in numerical procedures such as finite element and discrete element (rigid block) computer programs.

    Notes: The elastostatic analysis of layered systems (such as a soil consisting of a set of L individually homogeneous strata) is tackled here on the basis of discretized boundary integral equations (boundary element method). By exploiting the peculiar chain-like pattern of the system, a recursive formula is obtained which generates economically a ‘stiffness matrix’ of the first n layers (from bottom) at the upper interface with the subsequent layer (n = 1…L). The ‘successive stiffness’ method proposed is shown to imply noteworthy advantages with respect to both the standard boundary element method by zones (or subregions) and another ad hoc, earlier method resting on a boundary element approach combined with the transfer matrix concept.     Notes: A finite element theory, suitable for describing the long-term transient thermal creep of geomechanical structures where the material obeys an arbitrary type of creep law, is presented. The method takes into account large deformation effects, is stable for the large time steps required to model geophysical phenomena and accurately simulates changing, incompressible, plastic flow fields. Applications of the theory to the prediction of long-term creep and creep rupture of simple engineering structures, are given. The theory is also applied to predict the thermal creep of layered media to study the mechanics of folding and rift formation.

    Notes: This paper presents plasticity formulation of the multi-laminate framework of soil models. Soil element is assumed to be an assemblage of perfectly fitting polyhedral blocks and irreversible deformations are assumed to occur due to sliding, separation/closing of the boundaries. Using an appropriate summation of mechanisms, the total plastic strains are obtained by evaluating contributions from an infinite number of randomly oriented planes in space. The paper provides a general plasticity formulation and examines various constitutive theories which can be incorporated into the framework.

    Notes: The effect of axial load on the torsional pile response and the effect of torque on the axial pile response are investigated. To perform this investigation, a computer program was developed which uses the transfer matrix method to analyse a pile supported by a series of coupled axial and torsional elasto-plastic springs. The study indicated that the ultimate torsional and axial pile capacities, as well as the axial displacements and rotations, are significantly affected by the combined load action.

    Notes: A numerical approach is presented for the ‘identification’ (or back calculation) of the earth pressure acting on embedded or retaining structures. The procedure is applicable to structures of any shape and requires a set of in situ measurements that may include displacements of points on the structure, values of concentrated forces, values of distributed loads at some locations, etc. Possible limiting values of the unknown loads, non-linear structural behaviour, varying accuracies of the input data are accounted for in the problem formulation. Depending upon the type of problem, the solution is reached by means of the unconstrained or constrained minimization of a suitably defined error function. As an example, the proposed approach is applied to the identification of the earth pressure acting on some typical geotechnical engineering structures.

    Notes: The quasi-static development of the force, pore pressure and displacement is obtained in the system of a circular elastic pile partially embedded in a saturated porous elastic soil, and loaded axially on the top. The porous elastic soil is governed by Biot's theory. The problem is decomposed into two systems, namely, an extended porous elastic half-space in the absence of the pile characterized by the material constants of the medium, and a fictitious pile represented by a Young's modulus equal to the difference between the Young's moduli of the real pile and the medium. The problem is found to be governed by a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. Laplace transforms are applied to time functions involved, and Hankel transforms to the radial coordinate of which the origin is at the centre of the pile. Numerical solutions are obtained for final and initial solutions for various practical values of the parameters involved.

    Notes: In this paper models are given for analysis and description of non-linear properties of joints, weak intercalations and interfaces in rock masses.Models for analysis consist of four parts, i.e. shear displacement model, normal deformation model, shear strength model and a relationship between unit shear stiffness and normal stress.The method of non-linear analysis given in this paper is based on an incremental procedure.The proposed method is available for different types of shear-displacement curves, and also adapted to the complicated process of loading-unloading-reloading.The results of computer simulation of an in-situ shear test obtained by this method gave a good fit to the measured data.The method of non-linear analysis of joint elements has been used in some practical rock engineering problems, and some interesting results and conclusions have been obtained.

    Notes: A soil-reinforcement load transfer model was developed by the authors1 to simulate the response of the reinforced soil material to triaxial compression and direct shearing. This paper presents the application of the proposed model for the numerical analysis of direct shear tests on sand samples reinforced with different types of tension resisting reinforcements. A parametric study is conducted to evaluate the effect of the mechanical characteristics and dilatancy properties of the soil, extensibility (elastic modulus) of the reinforcements, and their inclination with respect to the failure surface on the response of the reinforced soil material to direct shearing. An attempt is made to verify the proposed model by comparing numerical test simulations with experimental results reported by Jewell,2 and Gray and Ohashi.3 Comparisons of predicted and experimental results illustrate that the model can provide adequate simulations of the response of the reinforced soil material to shearing. In particular, it allows an evaluation of the effect of soil dilatancy (or contractancy), and extensibility of the reinforcement on tension forces generated in inclusions during shearing.

    Notes: A quasi-Newton algorithm is implemented for the solution of multi-dimensional, linear consolidation problems. The study is motivated by the need to implement an efficient equation-solving technique for the solution of large systems of equations typical in problems of consolidation of saturated porous media. The proposed procedure obviates the need to reassemble and re-factorize the global coefficient matrix every load increment, albeit the time step may be held variable in the analysis. The method employs the combined techniques of ‘line search’ and BFGS updates applied to the coupled equations. A numerical example is presented to show that the proposed method is computationally more efficient than the conventional direct equation-solving scheme, particularly when solving large systems of finite element equations.

    Notes: In this paper, the ability of a displacement-type finite element analysis to predict collapse loads accurately is investigated. For the usual assumptions of ideal plasticity and infinitesimal deformations, attention is focused on undrained geotechnical problems. The theoretical criterion originally developed by Nagtegaal et al.1 is applied to each member of the serendipidity quadrilateral and triangular family of elements, up to and including those with a quartic displacement expansion. This method of assessing the suitability of a particular type of element is shown to be valid for any constitutive law which attempts to enforce the constant volume condition at failure, such as critical state type soil models. The method is also generalized to permit an assessment, a priori, of the suitability of any given mesh which is composed of a finite number of elements of the same type. It is postulated that the 15-noded, cubic strain triangle is theoretically capable of accurate computations in the fully plastic range for undrained geotechnical situations which involve axial symmetry or plane strain. This prediction is verified by a series of numerical experiments on footing problems. Extending the work of Nagtegaal et al., 1 it is established theretically that if lower order finite elements are employed rigorously for non-trivial undrained problems with axial symmetry, then it is impossible to predict the exact limit load accurately, regardless of how refined the mesh may be.

    Notes: Collapse loads are overestimated by finite-element or finite-difference procedures when the material discretization does not allow locally incompressible plastic flow: for example, constant-strain triangles or tetrahedra give unacceptable results. The use of different discretizations for the isotropic and deviatoric parts of the strain tensor is advocated for preventing this problem. The technique can be easily implemented in existing two- and three-dimensional computer programs. Its effectiveness is demonstrated by several examples.

    Notes: The bearing capacity of deep foundations has been analysed using finite elements in conjunction with elasto-viscoplasticity. The influence of elastic parameters, mesh size and strain conditions on computed collapse loads was observed. Axisymmetric problems in particular were of interst, because it was found that good numerical solutions could be obtained through to collapse provided reduced integration was used.
