    Notizen: Abstract  This study examines the effect of temporally patterned pulse trains on duration tuning characteristics of inferior collicular neurons of the big brown bat, Eptesicus fuscus, under free-field stimulation conditions. Using a 50% difference between maximal and minimal responses as a criterion, the duration tuning characteristics of inferior collicular neurons determined with pulse trains of different pulse durations are described as band-pass, long-pass, short-pass, and all-pass. Each band-pass neuron discharged maximally to a specific pulse duration that was at least 50% larger than the neuron's responses to a long- and a short-duration pulse. In contrast, each long- or short-pass neuron discharged maximally to a range of long- or short-duration pulses that were at least 50% larger than the minimal responses. The number of impulses of an all-pass neuron never differed by more than 50%. When pulse trains were delivered at different pulse repetition rates, the number of short-pass and band-pass neurons progressively increased with increasing pulse repetition rates. The slope of the duration tuning curves also became sharper when determined with pulse trains at high pulse repetition rates. Possible mechanisms underlying these findings are discussed.

    Notizen: Abstract The functional role of GABAergic inhibition in shaping the frequency tuning of 96 neurons in the torus semicircularis of the leopard frog, Rana pipiens, was studied using microiontophoresis of the GABAA receptor antagonist, bicuculline methiodide. Bicuculline application abolished, or reduced in size, the inhibitory tuning curves of 72 neurons. In each case, there was a concommitant broadening of the excitatory tuning curve such that frequency-intensity combinations that were inhibitory under control conditions, became excitatory during disinhibition with bicuculline methiodide. These effects were observed irrespective of the excitatory tuning curve configuration prior to bicuculline methiodide application. Results indicate an important role for GABA-mediated inhibition in shaping the frequency selectivity of neurons in the torus semicircularis of the leopard frog. Bicuculline application also affected several other response properties of neurons in the leopard frog torus. Disinhibition with bicuculline methiodide increased both the spontaneous firing rate (18 cells) and stimulus-evoked discharge rate (81 cells) of torus neurons, decreased the minimum excitatory threshold for 18 cells, and altered the temporal discharge pattern of 47 neurons. Additional roles for GABAergic inhibition in monaural signal analysis are discussed.

    Notizen: Abstract Auditory neurons typically respond to a restricted range of frequencies and amplitudes of pure tone stimuli. These findings have led to the concept of the classical frequency receptive field. Over the last few years evidence has accumulated that stimuli outside the frequency and amplitude boundaries of a neuron's receptive field can influence responses to stimuli inside the classical receptive field. We could recently show that sinusoidally amplitude-modulated pure tones could excite cortical neurons although all of their spectral components were above the spectral range of pure tones effective to excite the neuron. This result demonstrated that neurons in the auditory cortex integrate over spectral ranges that are much wider than is evident from responses to pure tones. Here, using sinusoidally amplitude-modulated pure tone stimuli we determine electrophysiologically the high-frequency boundaries of the spectral integration capabilities of auditory cortical neurons in anaesthetized Mongolian gerbils under normal conditions and under the influence of the microiontophoretically applied GABAA-receptor antagonist bicuculline. Our results demonstrate that some auditory cortical neurons integrate over the gerbil's entire audible spectrum. Therefore, the classical excitatory frequency receptive field of an auditory cortical neuron, as determined with pure tone stimuli, cannot provide a satisfactory description of its spectral integrative properties.

    Notizen: Abstract Despite earlier assertions that most mammals are colour blind, colour vision has in recent years been demonstrated in a variety of eutherian mammals from a wide range of different orders. This paper presents the first behavioural evidence from colour discrimination experiments, that an Australian marsupial, the tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii), has dichromatic colour vision. In addition, the experiments show that the wallabies readily learn the relationship between the presented colours rather than the absolute hues. This provides a sensitive method to measure the location of the neutral-point, which is the wavelength of monochromatic light that is indistinguishable from white. This point is a diagnostic feature for dichromats. The spectral sensitivity of the wallabies' middle-wavelength-sensitive photoreceptor is known (peak: 539 nm) and the behavioural results imply that the sensitivity of the short-wavelength-sensitive receptor must be near 420 nm. These spectral sensitivities are similar to those found in eutherian mammals, supporting the view that the earliest mammals had dichromatic colour vision.

    Notizen: Abstract We investigated the autotrophic flagellate Euglena gracilis for gravity-induced modulation of the speed of swimming as previously documented for larger protozoan cells. Methods of video-tracking of swimming and sedimenting cells under 1 g and hypergravity up to 2 g, and computer-assisted data processing were applied. The vertical and horizontal swimming speed, and sedimentation rates of immobilized cells, were found to be linear functions of acceleration. Accounting for sedimentation in the observed upward and downward movements of Euglena, the active component of speed (propulsion) rose in proportion to acceleration. No saturation of gravikinesis was seen within the g-range tested. Gravity-dependent augmentation of speed was maximal in upward swimmers and decreased continuously over horizontal to downward swimmers. Linear extrapolations of the data to zero-g conditions suggest the absence of a threshold of gravikinesis in Euglena. Energetic considerations indicate a high sensitivity of gravitransduction near the level of Brownian molecular motion.

    Notizen: Abstract Multi-unit electrophysiological mapping was used to establish the area of the left- and right-hemisphere auditory cortex (AC) of the mouse and to characterize various fields within the AC. The AC of the left hemisphere covered a significantly larger (factor of 1.30) area compared to that of the right side. Based on best-frequency (BF) maps and other neuronal response characteristics to tone and noise bursts, five fields (primary auditory field, anterior auditory field, second auditory field, ultrasonic field, dorsoposterior field) and two small non-specified areas could be delimited on both hemispheres. The relative sizes of these fields and areas were similar on both sides. The primary and anterior auditory fields were tonotopically organized with counter running frequency gradients merging in the center of the AC. These fields covered BF ranges up to about 45 kHz. Higher BFs up to about 70 kHz were represented non-tonotopically in the separate ultrasonic field, part of which may be considered as belonging to the primary field. The dorsoposterior and second auditory fields were non-tonotopically organized and neurons had special response properties. These characteristics of the mouse AC were compared with auditory cortical maps of other mammals.

    Notizen: Abstract Flower-naive honeybees Apis mellifera L. flying in an enclosure were tested for their colour preferences. Bees were rewarded once on an achromatic (grey, aluminium or hardboard), or on a chromatic (ultraviolet) disk. Since naive bees never alighted on colour stimuli alone, a scent was given in combination with colour. Their landings on twelve colour stimuli were recorded. Results after one reward (“first test”) were analysed separately from those obtained after few rewards (“late tests”). 1) After pre-training to achromatic signals, bees preferred, in the first test, bee-uv-blue and bee-green colours. With increasing experience, the original preference pattern persisted but the choice of bee-blue and bee-green colours increased. 2) Neither colour distance of the test stimuli to the background or to the pre-training signal, nor their intensity, nor their green contrast, accounted for the colour choice of bees. Choices reflected innate preferences and were only associated with stimulus hue. 3) Bees learned very quickly the pre-trained chromatic stimulus, the original colour preferences being thus erased. 4) Colour preferences were strongly correlated with flower colour and its associated nectar reward, as measured in 154 flower species. 5) Colour preferences also resemble the wavelength dependence of colour learning demonstrated in experienced bees.

    Notizen: Abstract The present study was designed to examine the synaptic events in neurons of the pacemaker nucleus of Gymnotus carapo during the increase in rate of the electric organ discharge following activation of Mauthner cells. Pacemaker and relay cells were investigated using intracellular recordings which were performed under two different conditions: (1) with the pacemaker nucleus spontaneously discharging and (2) after its activity was abolished by anesthesia. Mauthner axon activation induced an increase in the rate of pacemaker cell discharges. This response was accompanied by an increase in the slope of the pacemaker potential (up to 110%) and a depolarization of these cells. The discharges of relay cells followed one to one those of pacemaker cells. In contrast to that observed in pacemaker cells, only brief depolarizing antidromic effects could be evoked in relay cells after Mauthner axon activation. In quiescent pacemaker cells, Mauthner cell activation induced a prolonged (up to 500 ms) depolarizing potential with an average amplitude of 1.92 ± 0.82 mV; its latency was 4.43 ± 1.14 ms. Our data indicate that, within the pacemaker nucleus, the population of pacemaker cells is the only target for Mauthner cell-evoked, short-latency excitatory synaptic actions.

    Notizen: Abstract Using intra- and extracellular recording techniques we examined the spontaneous discharge and membrane properties of respiratory-related neurons in isolated brainstem preparations of the frogs Rana catesbeiana and Rana pipiens that display spontaneous respiratory related activity in vitro. We observed neurons that depolarize during the fictive lung ventilation cycle as well as neurons that depolarize during the non-lung ventilation phase. Respiratory-related neurons demonstrated significant decreases in membrane input resistance during the fictive lung ventilation cycle but showed no evidence of voltage-dependent membrane conductances activated near resting membrane potential. Furthermore, respiratory neurons showed little spike frequency adaptation, their oscillatory activity was not dissociated from the global respiratory motor output following imposed changes in membrane potential, and spontaneous fluctuations in membrane potential were not observed following reversible interruption of respiratory burst activity by application of solutions low in calcium and high in magnesium. Taken together these results suggest that bulbar respiratory neurons in the isolated frog brainstem sampled in our study do not display endogenous bursting characteristics. Rather, they are strongly influenced by synaptic input.

    Notizen: Abstract The gap detection paradigm is frequently used in psychoacoustics to characterize the temporal acuity of the auditory system. Neural responses to silent gaps embedded in white-noise carriers, were obtained from mouse inferior colliculus (IC) neurons and the results compared to behavioral estimates of gap detection. Neural correlates of gap detection were obtained from 78 single neurons located in the central nucleus of the IC. Minimal gap thresholds (MGTs) were computed from single-unit gap functions and were found to be comparable, 1–2 ms, to the behavioral gap threshold (2 ms). There was no difference in MGTs for units in which both carrier intensities were collected. Single unit responses were classified based on temporal discharge patterns to steady-state noise bursts. Onset and primary-like units had the shortest mean MGTs (2.0 ms), followed by sustained units (4.0 ms) and phasic-off units (4.2 ms). The longest MGTs were obtained for inhibitory neurons (x¯ = 14 ms). Finally, the time-course of behavioral and neurophysiological gap functions were found to be in good agreement. The results of the present study indicate the neural code necessary for behavioral gap detection is present in the temporal discharge patterns of the majority of IC neurons.

    Notizen: Abstract The pineal eye of Xenopus laevis tadpoles is directly photosensitive. A sudden reduction in light intensity produces a burst of activity in the pineal ganglion cells, which is closely followed by the onset of swimming. In this paper I present the results of experiments on the effects of agonists and antagonists of candidate pineal transmitters on ganglion cell activity. I found that NMDA and non-NMDA excitatory amino acid (EAA) agonists increased pineal activity, indicating the presence of both types of receptor. Kynurenic acid reduced activity, thus confirming that the photoreceptor transmitter is an EAA. Under physiological conditions, CNQX blocked activity almost completely whilst AP5 had little effect. In Mg2+-free saline CNQX had a considerably smaller effect, but joint application of CNQX and AP5 blocked almost all activity; therefore, the NMDA receptors are subject to blockage by Mg2+. Although GABAA and ACh receptors appear to be present, no evidence was found for GABA or ACh as pineal transmitters. In addition, 5-HT had no effect on pineal activity. The main pineal transmitter is an EAA acting on ganglion cells through both NMDA and non-NMDA receptors. Other receptors are present but appear to have no role in controlling pineal activity at this stage.

    Notizen: Abstract The content of catecholamines and dihydroxyphenylalanine in larvae of the nudibranch Phestilla sibogae was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection. Dihydroxyphenylalanine, norepinephrine and dopamine were identified in larvae of all ages examined (5 through 12 days post-fertilization). Dihydroxyphenylalanine could be accurately quantified only in larvae of ages 8 through 12 days, when its average concentration increased from 0.62 to 6.71 × 10−2 pmol μg protein−1. Between ages 5 and 12 days dopamine rose from 0.081 to 0.616 pmol μg protein−1, and norepinephrine from 0.45 to 2.17 × 10−2 pmol μg protein−1. Dihydroxyphenylalanine, dopamine and norepinephrine were also measured at different stages of metamorphic progress in 10- to 12-day larvae. Dihydroxyphenylalanine increased by a factor of 2.4 between the onset and completion of metamorphosis, but levels of dopamine and norepinephrine remained stable. One millimolar alpha-methyl-dl-m-tyrosine, an inhibitor of catecholamine synthesis, inhibited natural metamorphosis and depleted endogenous norepinephrine and especially dopamine, respectively, to 75% and 35% of control values. The existence of unexpectedly high levels of catecholamines in metamorphically competent larvae, and the association of catecholamine depletion with inhibition of metamorphosis, indicate that these compounds may participate in the control of gastropod development.

    Notizen: Abstract In crickets (Gryllus campestris, Gryllus bimaculatus) the contribution of the suboesophageal ganglia (SOG) and thoracic ganglia to the generation of antennal movements during visual tracking, walking and flight was investigated by the transection of connectives. Transection of one circumoesophageal connective abolished the movements and postures of the antenna ipsilateral to the lesion, while the contralateral antenna behaved normally. Simple antennal reflexes remained. Transection of one neck connective reduced fast components of antennal movements during tracking and walking. During flight the ipsilateral antenna could not be maintained in a prolonged forward position. Antennal movements during tracking and walking appeared normal after transection of one connective between pro- and mesothoracic ganglia. However, the antennal flight posture required uninterrupted connections between brain and mesothoracic ganglion. The ablation of more posterior ganglia had no effect on the antennal behaviours investigated. Recordings from an antennal motor nerve revealed a unilateral net excitation relayed via the SOG to the brain. Two ascending interneurones with activity closely correlated with antennal movements are candidates for such a relay function. The data show that the brain is not sufficient to generate antennal movements and postures as integral parts of several behaviours. The SOG and the thoracic ganglia are required in addition.

    Notizen: Abstract Target detection poses problems for moving animals, such as tiger beetles, that track targets visually. The pursuer's movements degrade target image contrast and induce reafferent image movement that confounds continuous detection of prey. In nature, beetles pursue prey discontinuously with several iterations of stop-and-go running. The beetle's dynamics were analyzed by filming pursuits of prey or experimenter-controlled dummies. Durations of stops are inversely related to prey visual angular velocity; as the prey image moves between neighboring ommatidial fields, the beetle relocalizes it and renews running. During subsequent runs, translation and rotation depend upon prey visual angular velocity and position, respectively, seen during the previous stop. The beetle runs, then stops, while prey continues moving. After two to three iterations of stop-and-go the beetle catches its prey, suggesting open-loop control of running. Computational model simulations produce good qualitative spatio-temporal fit with actual pursuits. However, when pursuing prey dummies, beetles track continuously and quickly follow changes in target position, suggesting closed-loop control using a position-sensitive servo mechanism. Differences between these types of pursuit control system are discussed with respect to limitations in signal detection, particularly spatio-temporal contrast, that may force beetles to use an open-loop system.

    Notizen: Abstract There is a change in the synaptic connections between motor neurones that underlie locust kicking and jumping during maturation following the adult moult. The fast extensor tibiae (FETi) motor neurone makes monosynaptic excitatory connections with flexor tibiae motor neurones that have previously been implicated in maintaining flexor activity during the co-contraction phase of jumping, in which energy generated by the muscles of a hind leg is stored. The amplitude of the FETi spike decreases when repetitively activated, and this decrement is larger in locusts immediately following the adult moult than in mature locusts. The decrement in␣the FETi spike is correlated with a greater decrease in the amplitude of the flexor excitatory postsynaptic potential (EPSP) in newly moulted locusts and in turn with the failure of these locusts to kick or jump. The results presented here indicate that the developmental change in the connections between the motor neurones contributes to the change in behaviour following the moult.

    Notizen: Abstract We have examined the electrical activity of interneurons within the higher levels of the crayfish olfactory system. In unstimulated isolated crayfish head preparations, local protocerebral interneurons (LPI) of the hemiellipsoid bodies generate periodic, low-frequency membrane depolarizations. The most reasonable explanation for these baseline fluctuations, which were exhibited by all of the LPIs examined and which were reversibly abolished by either tetrodotoxin or low-calcium saline solution, is that they reflect periodic synaptic drive from the axon terminals of olfactory projection neurons. One-third of tested LPIs generated impulses in response to the odor stimuli we applied to the antennules. Those cells that did respond exhibited a brief excitatory postsynaptic potential and one or two action potentials, even during prolonged odor pulses. Many of the responding neurons also exhibited a delayed impulse burst 1 or 2 s following the stimulus pulse. Most of the responding cells recovered their sensitivity to odors very slowly, exhibiting disadaptation periods of several minutes. The apparent refractory nature of individual LPIs to olfactory stimulation is attributed in part to a hypothesized selectivity of connections between projection neurons and protocerebral targets and in part to the electrical isolation of the recording electrode from many regions of the extensive LPI dendritic tree.

    Notizen: Abstract Vertebrates are able to perceive the pitch of a series of harmonics, even when the fundamental frequency has been removed from the acoustic stimulus. Neural periodicity responses corresponding to the “missing fundamental” frequency of sonic stimuli have been observed in the auditory system of several animal species, including our own. This paper examines periodic cochlear neural responses of the gerbil. Periodicity responses to both sonic and ultrasonic stimuli originate within the cochlea of this animal. Acoustic stimuli, consisting of 2–12 successive harmonic frequencies, were used to generate an ensemble cochlear nerve periodicity response that was recorded from the round window of the cochlea. This response had a frequency equal to that of the missing fundamental, and not to those of the harmonic stimuli. Forward masking of the stimuli used to produce the periodicity response was used to generate sharp tuning curves, with tip frequencies corresponding to the harmonics and not to the periodicities. The sharpness of these functions increased as the frequencies of the harmonics increased, up to at least 38 kHz. This property could be related to reception of ultrasonic vocalizations utilized by many rodent species.

    Notizen: Abstract Translatory movement of an animal in its environment induces optic flow that contains information about the three-dimensional layout of the surroundings: as a rule, images of objects that are closer to the animal move faster across the retina than those of more distant objects. Such relative motion cues are used by flies to detect objects in front of a structured background. We confronted flying flies, tethered to a torque meter, with front-to-back motion of patterns displayed on two CRT screens, thereby simulating translatory motion of the background as experienced by an animal during straight flight. The torque meter measured the instantaneous turning responses of the fly around its vertical body axis. During short time intervals, object motion was superimposed on background pattern motion. The average turning response towards such an object depends on both object and background velocity in a characteristic way: (1) in order to elicit significant responses object motion has to be faster than background motion; (2) background motion within a certain range of velocities improves object detection. These properties can be interpreted as adaptations to situations as they occur in natural free flight. We confirmed that the measured responses were mediated mainly by a control system specialized for the detection of objects rather than by the compensatory optomotor system responsible for course stabilization.

    Notizen: Abstract The discrimination of pattern disruption in freely flying honeybees (Apis mellifera) was examined. Bees were trained to discriminate at a fixed distance between a regularly repeated black/white pattern and the same pattern at a different magnification in targets of the same angular size. The locations of areas of black were regularly shuffled to make them useless as cues. The results of the experiments indicate that the bees discriminate the disruption of the pattern as a whole, irrespective of the actual pattern. Bees trained to prefer a larger period transfer to an even larger period, when given a forced choice with a pair of patterns of differing disruption from those they were trained on, as if their spontaneous preference has not been overcome. Bees trained to prefer a smaller period, however, prefer the former negative pattern rather than transfer to an even smaller period. These results show that the bees do not rely solely on learning the absolute period of a pattern nor the relative disruption of two patterns, and they are confused when these two cues conflict in tests with unfamiliar targets. Bees can discriminate between fields of view that differ in average disruption as a generalized cue, irrespective of pattern.

    Notizen: Abstract Guard bees of the stingless bee Tetragonisca angustula (Apidae: Meliponinae) hover in stable positions in front of the nest to protect the flight corridor leading to the nest entrance against insect intruders. To unravel the visual control of station keeping, we exposed these hovering guards to expanding and contracting patterns at the nest front. The bees fly away from an expanding pattern and towards the centre of a contracting pattern along a line connecting their initial position and the centre of expansion regardless of where in the visual field they view the pattern. The response of bees to a spinning radial pattern is different: they fly parallel to the pattern, up and down or forward and backward depending on whether they initially hover to the side, above or below the centre of rotation. The bees respond to horizontal and to vertical expansion and contraction. They also adjust their distance relative to a rotating spiral which produces a realistic flow field and thus allowed us to test to what extent the bees minimize image motion speed. We find that guard bees indeed move in the appropriate direction to minimize the image motion speed they experience. A comparison of bees hovering at different distances from the nestfront at the onset of pattern motion and experiencing very different image velocities shows that the dynamics of the reaction is quite uniform. At the pattern velocities tested, we did not find evidence that guard bees use image motion to control their flight speed. The bees' response rather suggests that the underlying mechanism might be insensitive to the size of motion vectors.

    Notizen: Abstract The olfactory system is faced with a particular problem – the high dimensionality and inherent unpredictability of the chemical world. Most natural odorants encountered in everyday life are complex mixtures of many different volatiles. This means that from the outset the olfactory system has to contend with a great and often unpredictable diversity of molecules, making it difficult for stable primary features of the chemical world to be mapped onto the sensory surface. One solution to such unpredictability is provided by learning. Learning confers flexibility, enabling individuals of a given species to acquire and make use of the most appropriate information in a particular environment. Two examples of this are presented: learning of maternal odors in neonatal rabbits, including evidence that the sensory surface itself may be influenced by environmental conditions so as to enhance sensitivity to molecules of particular ecological relevance, and cross-cultural human studies suggesting that experience with everyday odors influences not only the way these are evaluated, but also their perceived intensity. It is concluded that an adequate understanding of odor coding and olfactory function will not be possible without taking such experience-dependent factors into account.

    Notizen: Abstract By behavioral and anatomical criteria, the pectinal sensory appendages of scorpions appear to be chemoreceptive organs specialized for detection of substances on substrates. These comb-like, midventral appendages contain tens of thousands of minute (〈5 μm), truncated setae, called pegs, arranged in dense, two-dimensional arrays on the ventral surface. In this study we used extracellular recording techniques to examine spontaneous and stimulated activity of sensory neurons within individual pegs. Chronic recordings lasting several days showed long-term fluctuations in spontaneous activity of sensory units in single peg sensilla, with peak activity coinciding with the animal's normal period of foraging. Several units were identified by the stereotypical waveforms of action potentials they elicit. Near-range olfactory stimulation of peg sensilla by volatile alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, esters, and carboxylic acids produced dose-dependent patterns of neural response. Contact stimulation with these chemicals, or water, or mechanical deflection of the peg tip also evoked activity in identifiable units. The peg sensilla appear to be broadly sensitive to odorants and tastants, suggesting they function similarly to the antennae of mandibulate arthropods.

    Notizen: Abstract The pectines of scorpions are ventral bilateral appendages supporting 104–105 chemosensory sensilla called pegs. Each peg contains 10–18 sensory neurons, some of which show ultrastructural evidence of axo-axonic synapses with other sensory neurons in the same sensillum. In extracellular recordings from single-peg sensilla, individual sensory units can be distinguished by impulse waveform and firing frequency. Cross-correlation analysis of impulse activity showed that at least two of these units, types `A1' and `A2', are inhibited during the 100-ms period immediately following activity of a third unit, type `B'. This interaction between sensory units in a single sensillum also occurs in surgically isolated pectines, indicating that it does not involve efferent feedback from the central nervous system. Other sensillar neurons appear to have excitatory interactions. Thus, in scorpion pectine, chemosensory information undergoes some form of processing within individual sensilla prior to its relay to the CNS, making this an unusually accessible preparation for study of first-order chemosensory processing events.

    Notizen: Abstract The subgenual organ of the honeybee (Apis mellifera) is suspended in a haemolymph channel in the tibia of each leg. When the leg is accelerated, inertia causes the haemolymph (and the subgenual organ) to lag behind the movement of the rest of the leg. The magnitude of this phase lag determines the displacement of the subgenual organ relative to the leg and to the proximal end of the organ, which is connected to the cuticle. Oscillations of the subgenual organ are visualised during vibration stimulation of the leg, by means of stroboscopic light. Video analysis provides fairly accurate values of the amplitude and phase of the oscillations, which are compared with the predictions of a model.   The model comparison shows that the haemolymph channel can be described as an oscillating fluid-filled tube occluded by an elastic structure (probably the subgenual organ). The mechanical properties of the subgenual organ and haemolymph channel resemble those of an overdamped mass-spring system. A comparison of the threshold curve of the subgenual organ determined using electrophysiology with that predicted by the oscillating tube model suggests that the sensory cells respond to displacements of the organ relative to the leg.

    Notizen: Abstract At the end of each molt insects shed their old cuticle by performing the stereotyped behavior of ecdysis. In the moth, Manduca sexta, this behavior is triggered by the neuropeptide eclosion hormone (EH). Insights into the mechanism of action of EH have come from the identification of a small network of peptidergic neurons that shows increased cyclic 3′,5′-guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) immunoreactivity at ecdysis in insects from many different orders. Here we present further evidence that strengthens the association between ecdysis and the occurrence of this cGMP response in Manduca. We found that the cGMP increases occurred at every ecdysis, although some of the neurons that showed a response at larval ecdysis did not participate at pupal and adult ecdysis. Both ecdysis and the cGMP increases only required an intact connection with the brain for the first 30 min after EH injection. Interestingly, ecdysis in debrained animals only occurred if the cGMP response had been initiated, suggesting that the onset of this response marks the time at which the central nervous system is first able to drive ecdysis. Finally, we found that the appearance of sensitivity to EH for triggering the cGMP response coincided with the time at which EH first triggers ecdysis.

    Notizen: Abstract This study examines the contribution of GABAergic inhibition to the discharge pattern and recovery properties of 110 bat inferior collicular neurons by means of bicuculline application to their recording sites. When stimulated with single pulses, 74 (67%) neurons discharged one or two impulses (phasic responders), 19 (17%) discharged three to ten impulses (phasic bursters) and 17 (16%) discharged impulses throughout the entire stimulus duration (tonic responders). Bicuculline application changed phasic responders into phasic bursters or tonic responders, increased the number of impulses by 10–2000% and shortened the response latency of most neurons. When stimulated with pairs of sound pulses, the recovery cycles of these neurons can be described as: (1) long inhibition (n = 49, 45%); (2) short inhibition (n = 41, 37%); and (3) fast recovery (n = 20, 18%) based upon the 50% recovery time that was either longer than 20 ms, between 10 and 20 ms or shorter than 10 ms. Bicuculline application shortened the 50% recovery time of most neurons by 11–2350% allowing them to respond to pairs of sound pulses at very short interpulse intervals. These data demonstrate that GABAergic inhibition contributes significantly to auditory temporal processing.

    Notizen: Abstract To investigate the priming of memories by contextual cues, bees were trained to negotiate two mazes in different places 25 m apart. In the first maze, bees flew leftwards when the inner wall of the maze was covered with 45° stripes or rightwards when the inner wall was coloured yellow. In the second maze, bees flew rightwards on viewing 135° diagonal stripes or leftwards on viewing blue. The trajectories evoked by 45° or 135° stripes were similar in both mazes. However, vertical stripes were treated like 45° stripes in maze 1 and like 135° stripes in maze 2. Contextual cues prime the response to stripes that are oriented in the training condition for that site so influencing responses to stripes in closely neighbouring orientations. What objects in a bee's surroundings determine its sense of place? Bees were trained to different visual patterns at two sites 40 m apart (A+ versus A– at site A, and E+ versus E– at site E). A+ was preferred over A– and E+ was preferred over E– at both training sites. A preference for A+ over E+ exhibited at site A dropped gradually with distance to suggest that spatial context includes both close and distant objects.

    Notizen: Abstract  Responses of mechanosensory lateral line units to constant-amplitude hydrodynamic stimuli and to sinusoidally amplitude-modulated water movements were recorded from the goldfish (Carassius auratus) torus semicircularis. Responses were classified by the number of spikes evoked in the unit's dynamic range and by the degree of phase locking to the carrier- and amplitude-modulation frequency of the stimulus. Most midbrain units showed phasic responses to constant-amplitude hydrodynamic stimuli. For different units peri-stimulus time histograms varied widely. Based on iso-displacement curves, midbrain units prefered either low frequencies (≤33 Hz), mid frequencies (50–100 Hz), or high frequencies (≥200 Hz). The distribution of the coefficient of synchronization to constant-amplitude stimuli showed that most units were only weakly phase locked. Midbrain units of the goldfish responded to amplitude-modulated water motions in a phasic/tonic or tonic fashion. Units highly phase locked to the amplitude modulation frequency, provided that modulation depth was at least 36%. Units tuned to one particular amplitude modulation frequency were not found.

    Notizen: Abstract To understand how chemoreceptor organs may extract temporal information from odor plumes, we investigated the frequency filter properties of lobster chemoreceptor cells. We used rapid stimulation and high-resolution stimulus measurement for accurate stimulus control and recorded extracellular responses from chemoreceptors in the lobster lateral antennule in situ. We tested 16 hydroxyproline-sensitive cells with a series of ten 100-ms pulses at 10, 100 and 1000 μmol l−1 at stimulation frequencies from 0.5 Hz to 4 Hz. Receptor cell responses could accurately encode 10 μmol l−1, but not 100 or 1000 μmol l−1 pulses, delivered at rates of 4 Hz. Flicker-fusion frequency and synchronization with the stimulus pulse train were concentration dependent: performance rates above 1 Hz became poorer both with increasing pulse amplitude and frequency. Flicker fusion frequency was 3 Hz for 100 μmol l−1 pulses and 2 Hz for 1000 μmol l−1 pulses. Individual cells showed differences in their stimulus pulse following capabilities, as measured by the synchronization coefficient. These individual differences may form a basis for coding temporal features of an odor plume in an across-fiber pattern.

    Notizen: Abstract Based on similarity of motor patterns of lizards, crocodiles, birds and mammals, various authors have concluded that a number of homologous muscles across these taxa demonstrate neuromuscular conservatism. This hypothesis remains untested for more basal taxa. Therefore, a quantitative electromyographic study of the hind limb during treadmill walking (mean speed of 0.75 SVL/s) in the salamander Dicamptodon tenebrosus was undertaken. Muscles located ventrally on the hind limb become active just before foot placement on the substrate, and maintain activity through the first half of the stance phase. Dorsally located muscles begin activity at or just before the start of the swing phase, and fire through the first half of swing. Several muscles showed a secondary EMG burst during the stride. The second burst in most ventral muscles occurred in late stance. In all dorsal muscles with double bursts, the second burst occurred in the middle of stance. Comparison of electromyographic onset and offset values for Dicamptodon to those for presumed homologues in other tetrapods reveals similarity in activity patterns for all ventral and two dorsal muscles despite anatomical rearrangements, supporting the hypothesis of neuromuscular conservatism for some muscles but not others.

    Notizen: Abstract Visual and circadian function are integrally related in birds, but the precise nature of their interaction is unknown. The present study determined whether visual sensitivity measured electroretinographically (ERG) in 7-week-old cockerels varies over the time of day, whether this rhythm persists in constant darkness (DD) and whether exogenous melatonin affects this ERG rhythmicity. ERG b-wave amplitude was rhythmic in LD and persisted in DD with peak amplitude during mid- to late afternoon in LD and mid-subjective day in DD, indicating that the ERG rhythm is endogenously generated. No daily or circadian variation in a-wave amplitude was observed, and ERG component latency and durations were not rhythmic. Intramuscular injection of 10 μg/kg melatonin at ZT10 in LD significantly decreased b-wave amplitude but had no effect on a-wave. Intraocular injection of 600 pg melatonin, however, had no effect on any aspect of the ERG. These data indicate that a circadian clock regulates ocular sensitivity to light and that melatonin may mediate some or all of this effect. The level at which melatonin modulates retinal sensitivity is not known, but the present data suggest a central site rather than a direct effect of the hormone in the eye.

    Notizen: Abstract Using the blue crab Callinectes sapidus as a model system, we have investigated the effects of potential neuromodulators on freely behaving animals. Of interest is the modulatory effect of a number of drugs on three rhythmic behaviors of the blue crab: courtship display (CD) of the male crab, sideways swimming and backward swimming. The drugs tested were proctolin, dopamine, octopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. Injection of each drug elicited a unique posture or combination of limb movements. These experiments showed two results pertinent to CD behavior: A posture identical to the CD posture was displayed after dopamine injection; and rhythmic leg waving similar to CD was evoked by proctolin. An unusual combination of flexion and extension of all limbs and movements of some limbs occurred after serotonin injection. Injection of octopamine led to a posture antagonistic to CD posture. The effects of these drugs were concentration- and time-dependent. Injection of dopamine, octopamine, or serotonin produced effects that were seasonally-dependent, and the influence of proctolin proved to be dependent on developmental stage. Quantitative analysis of leg waving movements after proctolin injection allowed for comparison of these movements to naturally-occurring behavior.

    Notizen: Abstract To assess the role of skylight polarization in the orientation system of a day-migrating bird, Yellow-faced Honeyeaters (Lichenostomus chrysops, Meliphagidae) were tested in funnel cages for their directional preferences. In control tests in the natural local geomagnetic field under the clear natural sky, they preferred their normal migratory course. Manipulations of the e-vector by depolarizing the skylight or rotating the axis of polarization failed to affect the orientation as long as the natural geomagnetic field was present. When deprived of magnetic information, the birds continued in their normal migratory direction as long as they had access to information from the natural sky, or when either the sun or polarized light was available. However, when sun was hidden by clouds, depolarizers caused disorientation. — These findings indicate that polarized skylight can be used for orientation when no other known cues are available. However in the hierarchy of cues of this species, the polarization pattern clearly ranks lower than information from the geomagnetic field.

    Notizen: Abstract The object of this study was to test the alternative hypotheses of magnetoreception by photopigments and magnetoreception based on magnetite. Migratory European Robins, Erithacus rubecula, were tested under light of different wavelengths; after these tests, they were subjected to a brief, strong magnetic pulse designed to alter the magnetization of single domain magnetite. In control tests under “white” light, the birds preferred the normal, seasonally appropriate migratory direction. Under 571 nm green light, they continued to be well oriented in the migratory direction, whereas under 633 nm red light, their behaviour was not different from random. The magnetic pulse had a significant effect on migratory orientation, but the response varied between individuals: some showed a persistent directional shift, while others exhibited a change in scatter; one bird was seemingly unaffected. These findings indicate a light-dependent process and, at the same time, suggest an involvement of magnetizable material in migratory orientation. They are in agreement with the model of a light-dependent compass and a magnetite-based ‘map’, even if some questions concerning the effect of the pulse remain open.

When tested with legphone stimulation at 5 and 16 kHz, two prothoracic low-frequency neurons', ON1 and L1 of Acheta domesticus females, receive mainly excitation from one side (soma-ipsilateral in ON1, soma-contralateral in L1) and inhibition from the opposite side as is described for other cricket species (Figs. 2,3). While thresholds at 5 kHz are similar in L1 and ON1, L1 receives 16 kHz excitation with a 15- 20 dB higher threshold (lower than in other cricket species) than ON1. Stimulation of L1 with lower intensity 16 kHz sound on the side of its major input results in a clear IPSP visible in dendritic recordings (Figs. 3,4). In L1 and ON1 the intensity response at 16 kHz rises steeper than that at 5 kHz. 2. The most sensitive auditory low-frequency receptors recorded have similar thresholds as ON1 and L1 at 5 kHz. Responses of the most sensitive auditory high-frequency receptors recorded show an intensity dependence which is similar to that of ON1 at 16 k Hz (Fig. 1C). 3. Results of two-tone experiments show a tuning of inhibition in ON1 and L1 which is similar to excitatory tuning of ON1 (Fig. 4), however with about 10 to 15 dB higher thresholds. In contrast, in Gryllus bimaculatus an exact match between ON1-excitation and ON1/AN1 inhibition has been described.

    Notizen: Abstract Adult pulmonate snails (Helix pomatia) were released equidistant between two types of food, carrot and potato, respectively. Naive snails moved in different directions and did not locate either food above chance, although both foods were readily eaten upon direct contact. After a single carrot feeding episode, 75% of the carrot-fed snails moved directly towards the carrot and ate it. Conversely, potato-fed snails located the potato in 67% of the cases. Snails that were fed apple or lettuce behaved like naive animals, with the majority of animals (75% in both cases) locating neither the carrot nor the potato. The ability of snails to locate this particular food after a single feeding episode was maintained for at least 11 days, provided that the snails were not exposed to other foods in the interim. If the animals were fed a different food (but still tested for food-finding ability to the initially conditioned food) their orientation preference decreased gradually over a period of 5 days. Although the snails' orientation is based upon olfactory cues, exposure to food odor alone is not sufficient to enable food-finding; additional feeding related stimuli are necessary. These findings indicate that Helix do not possess a predisposition for the foods tested, and further suggest that processes underlying food-finding and food selection are strongly influenced by learning experiences. The conditioning phenomenon underlying food-finding behavior has been called Food-Attraction Conditioning, and appears to be a crucial link between the ecologies of learning and foraging behaviors. The accessibility of the snail's nervous system should permit neuronal analysis of the mechanisms underlying such a unique and complex learning phenomenon.

    Notizen: Abstract In the escape behavior of the cockroach, all six legs begin to make directed movements nearly simultaneously. The sensory stimulus that evokes these leg movements is a wind puff. Posterior wind receptors excite giant interneurons that carry a multi-cellular code for stimulus direction — and thus for turn direction-to the three thoracic ganglia, which innervate the three pairs of legs. We have attemptd to discriminate among various possible ways that the directional information in the giant interneurons could be distributed to each leg's motor circuit. Do the giant interneurons, for instance, inform separately each thoracic ganglion of wind direction? Or is there one readout system that conveys this information to all three ganglia, and if so, might the identified thoracic interneurons, which are postsynaptic to the giant interneurons, subserve this function? We made mid-sagittal lesions in one or two thoracic ganglia, thus severing the initial segments of all the known thoracic interneurons in these ganglia, and thus causing their projection axons to the other thoracic ganglia to degenerate. This lesion did not sever the giant interneurons, however (Fig. 5). Following such lesions, the legs innervated by the intact thoracic ganglia made normally directed leg movements (Figs. 4, 6, 7). Thus, the projection axons of the thoracic interneurons are not necessary for normal leg movements. Rather, the giant interneurons appear to specify to each thoracic ganglion in which direction to move the pair of legs it innervates.

    Notizen: Abstract For diverse water insects (species of Hydrophilidae, Hadraenidae, Dytiscidae, Haliplidae and aquatic Heteroptera), the attractiveness of an artificial water surface was found to vary when the polarization of the reflected light, the property by which these insects identify water, was abolished in different regions of the spectrum. The sensitivity maxima of their reflection-polarization visual systems (λmax(POL)) thus determined were in various spectral regions, between λ 〈 360 nm (UV) and λ ca. 550 nm (yellow-green). Species with λmax(POL) at the short-wavelength end of the spectrum would be able to identify bodies of water by polarization regardless of whether the subsurface reflection was bright or dark; nevertheless, this group includes forms that avoid water with a bright subsurface because of the intensity of the reflected light. Species with λmax(POL) in the long-wavelength region fail to use certain bodies of water with a bright subsurface as habitats because the light they reflect at the longer wavelengths is insufficiently polarized. That the POL system of a species has a large λmax could affect habitat choice; on the other hand, it could also be that systems operating in the long-wavelength region were produced in the course of adaptation to the light conditions in or above the habitat.

    Notizen: Abstract The electrosensory lobe of mormyrid fish Gnathonemus petersii is strongly affected by corollary discharge signals associated with the electric organ discharge (EOD) motor command. This study is a physiological examination of one important source of corollary discharge signals to the lobe, the medial juxtalobar nucleus. Intracellular recordings from neurons of the medial juxtalobar nucleus show a single corollary discharge driven spike occurring at about 7.5 ms after the initiation of the EOD motor command with a temporal jitter in individual cells of less than 0.05 ms. Responses to intracellular current injection suggest the presence of a low threshold outward current that is similar to outward currents that have been identified in those neurons of the auditory system in which precise temporal information is preserved. Results from stimulation and lesion experiments indicate that the medial juxtalobar nucleus is responsible for major corollary discharge effects in the mormyromast regions of the electrosensory lobe, including: 1) the gate-like excitation of granule cells; and 2) various excitatory effects on other cells of the lobe. The medial juxtalobar nucleus transmits precise temporal information about the timing of the EOD motor command to the electrosensory lobe. This information is probably used in decoding electrosensory afferent latency as a measure of stimulus intensity.

    Notizen: Abstract Syrian hamsters with intergeniculate leaflet or sham lesions were given tests with a series of light pulses of gradually decreasing intensities. The light pulses were given early in the night, at zeitgeber time 14–15. The amount of wheel running during the pulses was compared to that in the same hour on a night with no light pulses. Hamsters with intergeniculate leaflet lesions showed a significantly greater suppression of their wheel running in response to light than the sham-lesioned animals. The lesioned animals also had larger negative phase angles of entrainment to the 14:10-h light-dark cycle than sham-operated controls. However, phase shifting in response to light pulses at either zeitgeber time 14 or 18 was not significantly altered by the lesions. Preferences for spending more time in a dark than a light area were not abolished by the lesions. It is concluded that the intergeniculate leaflet in the Syrian hamster cannot be of paramount importance for masking of locomotor activity by light but may play a modulating role.

    Notizen: Abstract Previous experiments demonstrated that in choice situations female Tettigonia cantans prefer signals with the conspecific spectrum over signals with the spectrum of the sibling species T. viridissima, whose signals lack the T. cantans-typical 8-kHz component but are otherwise identical in spectral composition. The underlying neuronal mechanisms were investigated using whole-nerve recordings of the tympanal nerve. Hearing thresholds did not differ significantly between the species in the range between 7 and 25 kHz. The responses of the tympanic nerve at 30 dB above threshold did, however, differ significantly between the species. While in T. viridissima response amplitudes did not differ between 7 and 12 kHz, in T. cantans responses at 8 kHz were significantly larger than at 10 and 12 kHz. Since possible influences of axonal diameters on response magnitudes were excluded, these results indicate that in T. cantans more receptor cells are tuned to 8 kHz than to 10–12 kHz, while in T. viridissima tuning of receptor cells is more evenly distributed. The higher response magnitude in T. cantans at 8 kHz than at 10–12 kHz is equivalent to an amplitude difference of 3.8–7 dB, which agrees well with previous behavioural estimates.

    Notizen: Abstract The behaviour of 38 honeybee dance followers and the patterns of antennal contact between followers and dancer were monitored during ten waggle runs for a feeding site 1200 m from the hive. The analysis was restricted to waggle runs with a maximum of 5 followers, allowing the followers to choose between different positions around the dancer. At the beginning of the waggle run, followers are rather evenly spaced around the dancer. During the waggle run, the followers tend to accumulate at the rear end of the dancer. At the end of the waggle run, all followers are found in a ±60° arc behind the dancer. The body orientation angles of the followers depend on their position relative to the dancer. The follower bees have intense antennal contact with the dancer. At least one temporal parameter of the contact pattern may inform the followers about their position relative to the dancer, may guide the dance followers to the rear end of the dancer and may allow them to extract information about the location of the food source advertised by the dance. The role of antennal contact for dance communication appears to have been underestimated in previous studies.

    Notizen: Abstract Brain levels of dopamine, serotonin, and octopamine were measured in relation to both age-related division of labor and inter-individual differences in task specialization independent of age in honey bee colonies. The only differences among similarly aged bees performing different tasks were significantly lower levels of dopamine in food storers than comb builders and significantly lower levels of octopamine in soldiers than foragers, but soldiers also were slightly younger than foragers. Differences associated with age-related division of labor were stronger. Older bees, notably foragers, had significantly higher levels of all three amines than did younger bees working in the hive. Using social manipulations to unlink chronological age and behavioral status, octopamine was found to exhibit the most robust association between behavior and amine level, independent of age. Octopamine levels were significantly lower in normal-age nurses versus precocious foragers and overage nurses versus normal-age foragers, but not different in reverted nurses versus reversion colony foragers. Dopamine levels were significantly lower in normal-age nurses versus precocious foragers, but higher in reverted nurses versus reversion colony foragers. Serotonin levels did not differ in any of these comparisons. These correlative results suggest that octopamine is involved in the regulation of age-related division of labor in honey bees.

    Notizen: Abstract The dragonfly, (Aeshna, Anax) which feeds on small flying insects, requires a visual system capable of signaling the movements of airborne prey. A group of 8 descending feature detectors in the dragonfly are tuned exclusively to moving contrasting objects. These “target-selective” descending neurons project from the brain to the thoracic ganglia. Their activity drives steering movement of the wings. In this study, we recorded target-selective descending neuron activity intracellularly.To define their receptive fields, we recorded responses to the movement of black square targets projected onto a screen in front of the animal. Each neuron was identified by dye injection. Target-selective descending neurons exhibit several receptive field properties. Our results show that they are strongly directionally selective. Two TSDNs, exclusively tuned to small targets, have receptive fields restricted to visual midline. Others, which are not selective for target size, have asymmetric receptive fields centered laterally.We suggest that the behavioral function of these specialized feature detectors is to steer the dragonfly during prey-tracking so as to fix the position of the prey image on the retina. If the dragonfly maintains a constant visual bearing to its prey over time it will intercept its prey.

    Notizen: Abstract During metamorphosis, the lateral line system of ranid frogs (Rana catesbeiana) degenerates and an auditory system sensitive to airborne sounds develops. We examined the onset of function and developmental changes in the central auditory system by recording multi-unit activity from the principal nucleus of the torus semicircularis (TSp) of bullfrogs at different postmetamorphic stages in response to tympanically-presented auditory stimuli. No responses were recorded to stimuli of up to 95 dB SPL from latemetamorphic tadpoles, but auditory responses were recorded within 24 hours of completion of metamorphosis. Audiograms from froglets (SVL 〈 5.5 cm) were relatively flat in shape with high thresholds, and showed a decrease in most sensitive frequency (MSF) from about 2500 Hz to about 1500 Hz throughout the first 7–10 days after completion of metamorphosis. Audiograms from frogs larger than 5.5 cm showed continuous downward shifts in MSF and thresholds, and increases in sharpness around MSF until reaching adult-like values. Spontaneous activity in the TSp increased throughout postmetamorphic development. The torus increased in volume by approximately 50% throughout development and displayed changes in cell density and nuclear organization. These observations suggest that the onset of sensitivity to tympanically presented airborne sounds is limited by peripheral, rather than central, auditory maturation.

    Notizen: Abstract The two Protocerebral-Medulla 4 neurons (PM4a and b) in the locust brain have adjacent cell bodies in the medial deutocerebrum. They project through the posterior protocerebrum, forming limited arborisations en route, and enter the lobula and medulla of the ipsilateral optic lobe, where they form extensive, overlapping arborisations. The PM4a and b neurons are octopamine immunoreactive. Their octopamine content (approximately 25 pg per cell) is confirmed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry; each cell contains approximately 25 pg p-octopamine. Simultaneous intracellular recording from exposed PM4a and b cell bodies reveals that the two cells are physiologically indistinguishable. They receive multimodal sensory inputs. Tactile/mechanosensory stimuli to much of the animal's body and head, acoustic stimuli, and simple visual stimuli all give rise to e.p.s.p.s and action potentials in the PM4 cell body. Simultaneous recording from the cell body in the deutocerebrum and the axon in the lobula demonstrates that action potentials are predominantly initiated in the deutocerebrum and propagate centrifugally, towards the optic lobe. Occasionally, bright light flashes will initiate an action potential in the axon in the optic stalk, which probably propagates bidirectionally: centripetally to the cell body, and centrifugally into the optic lobe. The extensive arborisations in the lobula and medulla are therefore likely to be sites of octopamine release. Because PM4 neurons are octopaminergic, project to the optic lobe, and receive modalities of sensory input known to dishabituate the Descending Contralateral Movement Detector (DCMD) visual interneuron, it is proposed that PM4 neurons are neuromodulatory — mediating dishabituation or arousal of the visual system.

    Notizen: Abstract 1. The wasp Ampulex compressa hunts cockroaches as food for her offspring. Stung cockroaches show little spontaneous movement although they are able to move. Wind stimuli to the cerci, which normally produce escape responses, are no longer effective in stung cockroaches. In the present paper, we have searched for neural correlates responsible for the impairment of the escape behavior by the venom. 2. In control cockroaches, a typical motor response in the coxal depressor muscle to wind or tactile stimuli consists of an initial burst of the fast and slow depressor motoneurons followed by rhythmic discharges. In stung cockroaches, both stimuli evoke only a burst in the slow but no discharge activity in the fast depressor neuron. Intracellular recordings from the fast depressor motoneuron in stung cockroaches demonstrate that it still receives synaptic input, though subthreshold, from thoracic interneurons associated with the wind mediated escape circuitry. Discharge activity of the slow motoneuron lacks the rhythmic bursting pattern characteristic for slow walking in control animals. 3. Yet, the venom affects neither the response of descending mechanosensitive giant interneurons to tactile stimuli nor the response of the abdominal giant interneurons to wind stimuli, both of which are known to excite the thoracic interneurons. The venom has also no effect on neuromuscular signal transmission.

    Notizen: Abstract The two most common mechanisms of pupillary screening-pigment migration in arthropod superposition eyes are the cone and longitudinal pigment migration mechanisms. The dynamics of each were investigated by optical modelling and by determining experimentally the relationship between eye glow brightness and screening pigment position within the eyes of two representative insect species: the noctuid moth Agrotis infusa and the dung beetle Copris elphenor. During dark adaptation, in both mechanisms, the screening pigment is contracted distally to expose the proximal half of each crystalline cone. During light adaptation the pigment migrates proximally and reduces light flux in the retina. In the longitudinal mechanism, pigment migrates into the clear zone of the eye. In the cone mechanism, pigment never enters the clear zone and is instead restricted to the proximal half of each crystalline cone: a migrating sleeve of pigment creates a small aperture at the end of the crystalline cone, the area of which depends on the degree of light adaptation. According to the model, the cone mechanism provides a limited range of light attenuation (ca. 0.6 log units) for which both good spatial resolution and accuracy of control are maintained, and within this range attenuation is controlled very finely. Beyond this range, whilst attenuation is still possible, diffraction at the pigment aperture and increasing coarseness of control worsen visual performance significantly. In contrast, the longitudinal mechanism provides a much larger useful range of light attenuation (up to several log units) and maintains reasonable fineness of attenuation control over the entire range (although not as fine as the cone mechanism). The experimental results support the model. An extensive survey of arthropods with superposition eyes reveals that the cone mechanism is almost exclusively possessed by those animals experiencing a narrow range of light intensities, and the longitudinal mechanism by those experiencing a wide range.

    Notizen: Abstract Each cnidarian nematocyte includes a vesicular organelle, called nematocyst, which discharges its content when the cell receives appropriate stimuli. Extracellular electrical stimuli induced discharge of in situ stenoteletype nematocysts in Hydra vulgaris when the apical membrane of nematocytes was depolarized by about 25 mV or more (threshold). Stimuli hyperpolarizing the apical membrane induced discharge only at high amplitudes, adding about 80 mV or more to the resting membrane potential of the nematocyte (resulting in a voltage that may permeabilize the apical membrane). In order to determine the speed of the initiating (exocytotic) process, the delay between stimulus and a clearly visible sign of discharge (i.e., protrusion of the nematocyst's stylets) was measured using video microscopy with triggered flash illumination. The minimal delay was 330–450 μs and 230–350 μs for depolarizing and large hyperpolarizing stimuli, respectively. With depolarizing stimuli, all discharges of stenoteles occurred between 330 and 950 μs after the stimulus. The deviation was caused by differences in the physiological state of the animals tested rather than by variance in the responsiveness of different stenoteles in the same tentacle. Voltage dependence, short latency and Ca/Mg-antagonism are similar to those characterizing exocytosis of synaptic vesicles. This correspondence suggests that discharge of nematocysts is initiated by a similar exocytotic process preceding the ejection of the nematocyst's content.

    Notizen: Abstract We examined how well single neurons in the inferior colliculus (IC) of an FM bat (Myotis lucifugus) processed simple tone bursts of different duration and sinusoidal amplitude-modulated (SAM) signals that approximated passively heard natural sounds. Units' responses to SAM tones, measured in terms of average spike count and firing synchrony to the modulation envelope, were plotted as a function of the modulation frequency to construct their modulation transfer functions. These functions were classified according to their shape (e.g., band-, low-, high-, and all-pass). IC neurons having different temporal firing patterns to simple tone bursts (tonic, chopper, onset-late, and onset-immediate) exhibited different selectivities for SAM signals. All tonic and 83% of chopper neurons responded robustly to SAM signals and displayed a variety of spike count-based response functions. These neurons showed a decreased level of time-locking as the modulation frequency was increased, and thereby gave low-pass synchronization-based response functions. In contrast, 64% of onset-immediate, 37% of onset-late and 17% of chopper units failed to respond to SAM signals at any modulation frequency tested (5–800 Hz). Those onset neurons that did respond to SAM showed poor time-locking (i.e., non-significant levels of synchronization). We obtained evidence that the poor SAM response of some onset and chopper neurons was due to a preference for short-duration signals. These data suggest that tonic and most chopper neurons are better-suited for the processing of long-duration SAM signals related to passive hearing, whereas onset neurons are better-suited for the processing of short, pulsatile signals such as those used in echolocation.

    Notizen: Abstract We describe visual responses of seventeen physiological classes of columnar neuron from the retina, lamina and medulla of the locust (Locusta migratoria) optic lobe. Many of these neurons were anatomically identified by neurobiotin injection. Characterisation of neuronal responses was made by moving and flash stimuli, and by two system identification techniques: 1. The first-order spatiotemporal kernel was estimated from response to a spatiotemporal white-noise stimulus; 2. A set of kernels to second order was derived by the maximal-length shift register (M-sequence) technique, describing the system response to a two-channel centre-surround stimulus. Most cells have small receptive fields, usually with a centre diameter of about 1.5°, which is similar to that of a single receptor in the compound eye. Linear response components show varying spatial and temporal tuning, although lateral inhibition is generally fairly weak. Second-order nonlinearities often have a simple form consistent with a static nonlinear transformation of the input from the large monopolar cells of the lamina followed by further linear filtering.

    Notizen: Abstract We determined which sensory and motor nerves mediate orientation to flow in the marine slug Tritonia diomedea, and tested the hypothesis that the slug orients to water flow by comparing the intensities of water flow stimulation on each side of its body. Lesion experiments revealed which nerves carried information necessary for flow orientation. The lateral branches of Cerebral Nerve # 2 were the only cerebral nerves necessary for flow orientation. Cutting all cerebral nerves except the lateral branches of Cerebral Nerve # 2 did not eliminate flow orientation. Thus, the lateral branches of Cerebral Nerve # 2 were both necessary and sufficient (among the cerebral nerves) for flow orientation. Denervation of one side of the head by cutting Cerebral Nerves # 1–4 on one side did not eliminate normal flow orientation. We have revised our model of how Tritonia diomedea orients to flow to allow for this unilateral determination of flow direction. Unilaterally cutting Pedal Nerve # 3, which contains many pedal motor axons, reduced turning toward that side, but did not affect final orientation to flow. The ability to detect flow direction was not compro mised by the inability to initially turn towards flow.

    Notizen: Abstract An isolated brain preparation was used to characterize neurons innervating the accessory lobe (AL) of the spiny lobster (Panulirus argus). Four distinct classes of neurons responded to electrical stimulation of the olfactory (antennular) nerve. These cells responded to electrical stimulation with a long and variable latency; they also responded to odor stimulation in a nose-brain preparation. Neurons connecting the AL with the olfactory lobe branched in the central AL layer and selectively innervated olfactory lobe glomeruli. These cells had response latencies which were significantly shorter than those of other AL neurons. Intrinsic AL interneurons were heterogeneous as a population, and most arborized in irregular but circumscribed regions of either the lateral or medial layers. The final class of neurons branched ipsilaterally in the deutocerebral neuropil and bilaterally innervated only a few AL glomeruli. The physiology and morphology of these four classes of neurons confirm an olfactory function for the AL and identify the input and output regions of the lobe. Based on these findings, we propose that the AL processes odor information in the context of higher order multimodal input.

    Notizen: Abstract The Xenopus embryo is a valuable system in which to study the poorly understood mechanisms underlying vertebrate motor pattern switching. Here, we present a combined kinematic and electrophysiological description of the changes that occur during a switch between two rhythmic behaviours: struggling and swimming. Stable struggling movements evoked by sensory stimulation were followed by a transitionary period of variable duration leading to swimming. During the transition, cycle period and bending strength (local bending angle) progressively decreased and longitudinal delay progressively reversed. These changes were paralleled by similar changes in cycle period, burst duration and longitudinal delay of the motor pattern in immobilised embryos. The three movement parameters and their motor pattern correlates all scaled together during struggling and transitionary patterns. Our results indicate that transitions can be gradual (consistent with an earlier conclusion that a single set of pattern generating circuitry is involved); that the transitional movements are centrally programmed; and that they form a continuum with struggling movements. The correlated change of motor pattern parameters suggests that either a single mechanism underlies the components of the switch from struggling to swimming, or that separate mechanisms are closely linked.

    Notizen: Abstract High-speed videography was used to describe the initial turning movement of visually triggered escape in frogs and to compare it with the initial turn of frog prey capture behavior. These two types of turning had some general similarities, e.g. turn duration and peak velocity were positively correlated with turn angle. However, there were kinematic differences: for turns of a given angular amplitude, escape turns consistently demonstrated shorter duration and higher peak velocity than prey capture turns. There also were differences predictably matched to stimulus angles; escape turn angles were more variably related to stimulus angles. Both turning movements are believed to depend upon the optic tectum. However, given the observed differences in kinematics and spatial organization, we used lesion experiments to determine if distinct tectal efferent pathways subserve turning under each circumstance. Large unilateral lesions of the brainstem simultaneously disrupted both types of turning. However, smaller laterally placed lesions disrupted escape turning without disrupting prey capture turns. The kinematic differences in combination with the lesion results support the idea that the post-tectal circuitry for visually elicited turning movements is based upon separate descending pathways that control turning toward prey and turning away from threat.

    Notizen: Abstract The questing behaviour of ixodid ticks serves for identification and localisation of approaching hosts and is evoked by carbon dioxide, vibrations, visual and odour stimuli. In an olfactometer, we examined the specificity of the questing response of larvae of Boophilus microplus, a one-host tick which develops mainly on cattle, and Ixodes ricinus, a three-host tick with a broader host spectrum. While all mammalian odours tested were equally stimulatory for I. ricinus, B. microplus was clearly more activated by bovine odours. A phenolic fraction of bovine odour stimulated B. microplus only. Attractive components of the host odours were identified by exposing the ticks to single chemicals and mixtures. Single chemicals stimulated questing responses only at levels higher than the levels detected in the bovine odour. However, an artificial odour blend of 37 pure chemicals, diluted to concentrations at which the individual components were inactive, proved to be as effective as natural host odour for both tick species. Further fractionation of the blend revealed that the combinatory effect was achieved by only 7 compounds in both species. Although B. microplus responded to the same synergistic mixture of volatiles as I. ricinus, it showed significant higher sensitivity to the cattle-associated compounds 1-octen-3-ol and 2-nitrophenol and this might contribute to its host-specificity.

    Notizen: Abstract This paper investigates how the pattern influences the discrimination of different locations of two or more areas of black, white or colour. The coloured patterns were made from two calibrated coloured papers that give contrast only to green receptors, or alternatively only to blue receptors. The patterns are fixed during training. It is found that the discrimination of translocation of two areas of colour involves green receptors and also blue receptors, and the resolution depends strongly on the pattern. Patterns that offer horizontal strips and up-down differences in locations are well resolved, even with no green contrast. Resolution of left-right reversal is greatly improved when the patterns promote fixation in the horizontal plane, as if green contrast is essential to stabilize the eye in yaw. The addition of radial bars with green contrast, a central black spot or a black surround, is particularly effective. The additions promote fixation, and would aid the detection of natural symmetrical objects.

    Notizen: Abstract We have previously reported that most units in the input regions of the cockroach mushroom bodies have activities related to sensory inputs, while the majority of units in the output regions are related to movements of the animal. In the present study, we were able to attain a more satisfactory isolation of single units by using thinner wires and further characterize the activities of units in the mushroom body output regions. Forty-one units recorded here were classified into three types: sensory, movement-related, and sensori-motor units. Different units from each group exhibited a great variety in activities. Some movement-related and sensori-motor units exhibited activity preceding the onset of movements. We propose that the mushroom body participates in the integration of a variety of sensory and motor signals, possibly for initiating and maintaining motor action. While different neurons displayed a great diversity of responses, the activities of multiple neurons recorded simultaneously exhibited similar, but not identical, responses. These neurons appeared to locate adjacent to each other and may represent a cluster of extrinsic neurons that act synergistically to transmit a specific set of mushroom body output signals.

    Notizen: Abstract The measurement of distortion-product otoacoustic emissions is a noninvasive method that can be used for assessing the sensitivity and the frequency tuning of nonlinear cochlear mechanics. During stimulation with two pure tones f1 and f2, the acoustic 2f1-f2 distortion was recorded in the ear canal of Cryptomys spec. to study specializations in cochlear mechanics that could be associated with the presence of a frequency expanded cochlear region between 0.8–1 kHz. In addition, a distortion threshold curve was obtained which describes relative threshold of nonlinear cochlear mechanics. Sensitive distortion thresholds could be measured for stimulus frequencies between 0.4 to 18 kHz with a broad minimum between 0.75 to 2.5 kHz. The distortion threshold curve extends to higher frequencies than previous neuronal data indicated. As a measure of mechanical tuning sharpness in the cochlea, suppression tuning curves of 2f1-f2 were recorded. The tuning curves reflected the typical mammalian pattern with shallow low frequency and steep high frequency slopes. Their tuning sharpness was poor with Q10dB values between 0.3 and 1.88. In the range of the frequency expanded region, the Q10dB values were below 0.5. This finding emphasizes that the presence of frequency expansion does not necessarily lead to enhanced mechanical tuning in the cochlea and one has to consider if in certain bat species with cochlear frequency expansion and particularly sharp cochlear tuning, the two phenomena may not be interlinked.

    Notizen: Abstract This report describes the responses of single afferent fibers in the posterior lateral line nerve of the goldfish, Carassius auratus, to pure tone and to amplitude-modulated sinusoidal wave stimuli generated by a dipole source (stationary vibrating sphere). Responses were characterized in terms of output-input functions relating responses to vibration amplitude, peri-stimulus time histograms relating responses to stimulus duration, and the degree of phase-locking to both the carrier frequency and the modulation frequency of the amplitude-modulated stimulus. All posterior lateral line nerve fibers responded to a pure sine wave with sustained and strongly phase-locked discharges. When stimulated with amplitude-modulated sine waves, fibers responded with strong phase-locking to the carrier frequency and, in addition, discharge rates were modulated according to the amplitude modulation frequency. However, phase-locking to the amplitude modulation frequency was weaker than phase-locking to the carrier frequency. The data indicate that the discharges of primary lateral line afferents encode both the carrier frequency and the modulation frequency of an amplitude-modulated wave stimulus.

    Notizen: Abstract The mechanisms that trigger the onset of the breeding season depend on geographical latitude. At the edge of Gymnotiform distribution in America, variations in day length and water temperature are likely cues to initiate breeding. In this study we aim to clarify the role of temperature and the interaction between temperature and hormonal state upon electric organ discharge waveform. In breeding ponds, we measured naturally occurring changes of water temperature and of electric organ discharge waveform during two 48-h periods in a sample of identified mature males and females of Brachyhypopomus pinnicaudatus. Water temperature, day-night cycle, and sexual maturity each modified electric organ discharge waveform. Temperature sensitivity was also evaluated in the laboratory in adult sexually-differentiated individuals, adult non-differentiated fish, juveniles, and testosterone-treated fish. Our data strongly suggest an interaction between the effects of temperature and steroid hormones upon electric organ discharge waveform. High temperature (30 °C) induced a significant decay of head negative phase amplitude in temperature-sensitive fish. This sensitivity was observed in physiological conditions that coincide with low levels of steroid hormones: juveniles and adult fish kept in captivity at 20–21 °C. Conversely, temperature resistance was observed in mature fish in the breeding habitat and was induced by testosterone treatment and by captivity at 27–28 °C.

    Notizen: Abstract The unusual morphology of a sound-activated plurisegmental ascending interneurone (AN5-AG7) in an insect (Ancistrura nigrovittata, Ensifera, Phaneropteridae) is described. This neurone's soma is located in the penultimate abdominal ganglion. The most prominent arborisations with smooth endings are found in the prothoracic ganglion. The neurone terminates with numerous beaded endings in the brain (protocerebrum). All abdominal ganglia including the penultimate contain only tiny side branches of beaded appearance. The neurone's morphology is compared to the morphology of a `typical' sound-activated plurisegmental neurone of bushcrickets with its soma in the prothorax. In the prothoracic ganglion and in the brain the arborisations of the two cells are very similar. Graded potentials and action potentials are generated in the prothoracic portion of both neurones. Both receive excitation mainly by ultrasound, and inhibition by soma-ipsilateral stimuli. Neither wind, substrate vibration nor touch of the abdomen evoke responses in AN5-AG7. It is assumed that early in evolution this neurone had its dendrites in the ganglion which houses the cell body (like cercal interneurones of this neuromere).     Notizen: Abstract Bees derived from artificially selected high- and low-pollen-hoarding strains were tested for their proboscis extension reflex response to water and varying sucrose concentrations. High-strain bees had a lower response threshold to sucrose than low-strain bees among pre-foragers, foragers, queens and drones. Pre-foraging low-strain workers showed ontogenetic changes in their response threshold to sucrose which was inversely related to age. High-strain foragers were more likely to return with loads of water compared to low-strain foragers. Whereas low-strain foragers were more likely to return with loads of nectar. Low-strain nectar foragers collected nectar with significantly higher sucrose concentrations than did the high-strain nectar foragers. Alternatively, low-strain foragers were more likely to return empty compared to high-strain foragers. These studies demonstrate how a genotypically varied sensory-physiological process, the perception of sucrose, are associated with a division of labor for foraging.

    Notizen: Abstract The avian hippocampal formation is known to participate in naturally occurring spatial behavior such as homing in pigeons and cache recovery in food storing passerines, but its participation in the often spectacular migrations of birds remains uncertain. As a first investigation into the possible role of hippocampal formation in migration, the effect of hippocampal formation lesions on the geomagnetic migratory orientation of Savannah sparrows was examined. When tested indoors, hippocampal formation-lesioned sparrows were able to orient in an appropriate migratory direction indicating no necessary role for hippocampal formation in geomagnetic migratory orientation. However, hippocampal formation-lesioned birds displayed significantly less migratory (nocturnal) activity, a result that inspires further study.

    Notizen: Abstract The role of the avian hippocampal formation in a one-trial food association task was investigated across various retention intervals. Control pigeons, lesioned controls, and pigeons with hippocampal formation lesions were allowed to find food hidden in one of four uniquely decorated bowls in a specific location in a room. After retention intervals of 10 min, 1 h, 7 h, and 24 h, pigeons were placed back in the room with the same bowl in the same location (unmanipulated trials) or with the previously rewarding bowl in a new location and a different bowl in the previously rewarding location (test trials). Although all groups chose the correct bowl during unmanipulated trials, hippocampal formation lesioned birds' choices to the bowl in the correct location decreased compared to the combined controls during the test trials. The results suggest that hippocampal formation lesions do not impair long-term memory of a goal after one experience but significantly decrease the use of spatial information to return to that goal.

    Notizen: Abstract Short-latency vestibular-evoked potentials to pulsed linear acceleration were characterized in the quail. Responses occurred within 8 ms following the onset of stimuli and were composed of a series of positive and negative peaks. The latencies and amplitudes of the first four peaks were quantitatively characterized. Mean latencies at 1.0 g ms−1 ranged from 1265 ± 208 μs (P1, N = 18) to 4802 ± 441 μs (N4, N = 13). Amplitudes ranged from 3.72 ± 1.51 μV (P1/N1, N = 18) to 1.49 ± 0.77 μV (P3/N3, N = 16). Latency-intensity (LI) slopes ranged from −38.7 ± 7.3 μs dB−1 (P1, N = 18) to −71.6 ± 21.9 μs dB−1 (N3, N = 15) and amplitude-intensity (AI) slopes ranged from 0.20 ± 0.08 μV dB−1 (P1/N1, N = 18) to 0.07 ± 0.04 μV dB−1 (P3/N3, N = 11). The mean response threshold across all animals was −21.83 ± 3.34 dB re: 1.0 g ms−1 (N = 18). Responses remained after cochlear extirpation showing that they could not depend critically on cochlear activity. Responses were eliminated by destruction of the vestibular end organs, thus showing that responses depended critically and specifically on the vestibular system. The results demonstrate that the responses are vestibular and the findings provide a scientific basis for using vestibular responses to evaluate vestibular function through ontogeny and senescence in the quail.

    Notizen: Abstract The cuticle strain which develops in the hindleg tibiae when a locust prepares to kick, or when the tibia thrusts against an obstacle, is detected by two campaniform sensilla, which reflexly excite the fast extensor tibiae motoneuron, some of the flexor tibiae motoneurons and nonspiking interneurons. The reflex excitation is adaptive for the extensor motoneuron during both co-activation and thrusting, but is only adaptive for the flexor motoneurons during co-activation, and is maladaptive during thrusting. We show that the femoral chordotonal organ, which monitors tibial position, controls the efficacy of the strain feedback. The campaniform sensilla-induced depolarization in the extensor motoneuron is about twice as large when the tendon is in mid position (reflecting a tibial-femoral angle of 90°) than when fully stretched (reflecting tibial flexion), while in the flexors the reverse is true. The amplitudes of excitatory postsynaptic potentials evoked by single campaniform sensilla spikes, are, however, not affected. Our data suggests that the chordotonal organ modulates the gain of the strain feedback onto the motoneurons by exciting interneuronal circuits whose output sums with the former. Thrusting typically occurs with the tibia partially extended, therefore the actions of the chordotonal organ support the production of a maximal thrusting force.

    Notizen: Abstract Scanning electron microscopy, immunocytochemistry, and single cell microspectrophotometry were employed to characterize the photoreceptors and visual pigments in the retina of the garter snake, Thamnophis sirtalis. The photoreceptor population was found to be comprised entirely of cones, of which four distinct types were identified. About 45.5% of the photoreceptors are double cones consisting of a large principal member joined near the outer segment with a much smaller accessory member. About 40% of the photoreceptors are large single cones, and about 14.5% are small single cones forming two subtypes. The outer segments of the large single cones and both the principal and accessory members of the doubles contain the same visual pigment, one with peak absorbance near 554 nm. The small single cones contain either a visual pigment with peak absorbance near 482 nm or one with peak absorbance near 360 nm. Two classes of small single cones could be distinguished also by immunocytochemistry and scanning electron microscopy. The small single cones with the 360-nm pigment provide the garter snake with selective sensitivity to light in the near ultraviolet region of the spectrum. This ultraviolet sensitivity might be important in localization of pheromone trails.

    Notizen: Abstract Giant interneurones mediate a characteristic `tail flip' escape response of the crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, which move it rapidly away from the source of stimulation. We have analysed the synaptic connections of proprioceptive sensory neurones with one type of giant interneurone, the lateral giant. Spikes in sensory neurones innervating an exopodite-endopodite chordotonal organ in the tailfan, which monitors the position and movements of the exopodite, are followed at a short and constant latency by excitatory postsynaptic potentials in a lateral giant interneurone (LG) recorded in the terminal abdominal ganglion. These potentials are unaffected by manipulation of the membrane potential of LG, by bath application of saline with a low calcium concentration, or by one containing the nicotinic antagonist, curare. The potentials evoked in LG by chordotonal organ stimulation are thus thought to be monosynaptic and electrically mediated. This is the first demonstration that LG receives input from sensory receptors other than exteroceptors in the terminal abdominal ganglion.

    Notizen: Abstract Stimulation of the antenna of the male moth, Manduca sexta, with a key component of the female's sex pheromone and a mimic of the second key component evokes responses in projection neurons in the sexually dimorphic macroglomerular complex of the antennal lobe. Using intracellular recording and staining techniques, we studied the antennal receptive fields of 149 such projection neurons. An antennal flagellum was stimulated in six regions along its proximo-distal axis with one or both of the pheromone-related compounds while activity was recorded in projection neurons. These neurons fell mainly into two groups, based on their responses to the two-component blend: neurons with broad receptive fields that were excited when any region of the flagellum was stimulated, and neurons selectively excited by stimulation of the proximal region of the flagellum. Projection neurons that were depolarized by stimulation of one antennal region were not inhibited by stimulation of other regions, suggesting absence of antennotopic center-surround organization. In most projection neurons, the receptive field was determined by afferent input evoked by only one of the two components. Different receptive-field properties of projection neurons may be related to the roles of these neurons in sensory control of the various phases of pheromone-modulated behavior of male moths.

    Notizen: Abstract The cooling of deciliated Paramecium cells induced a transient Ca current and its amplitude depended on the rate of the temperature drop. The amplitude of the Ca current was increased by the addition of Ca2+ to the bath solution in a concentration-dependent manner, whereas Ni2+, Co2+, Mn2+ and Mg2+ each reversibly inhibited the Ca current in a concentration-dependent manner with apparent dissociation constants of 0.52, 0.66, 0.67 and 2.17 mmol · l−1, respectively. The Ca current was also inhibited reversibly by amiloride, with a dissociation constant of 0.32 mmol · l−1. The Ca current was desensitized by repetitive cooling. The amplitude of the Ca current at the second cooling was smaller than that at the first cooling when the interval was short, but recovered as the interval increased. Replacing extracellular Ca2+ with equimolar Sr2+ or Ba2+ did not significantly affect the amplitude of the current response to cooling, but it accelerated the rate of recovery from desensitization and slowed the decay of the current response. These results suggest that the desensitization and the inactivation of the Ca current may involve a Ca2+-dependent pathway.

    Notizen: Abstract Previous studies suggest that older honey bee workers possess an inhibitory signal that regulates behavioral development in younger bees. To study how this inhibitor is transmitted, bees were reared for 7 days in double-screen cages, single-screen cages, or unrestricted in a typical colony (control bees). Double-screen cages prevented physical contact with colony members while single-screen cages allowed only antennation and food exchange. Bees reared in double-screen cages showed accelerated endocrine and behavioral development; they had significantly higher rates of juvenile hormone biosynthesis and juvenile hormone titers than did control bees and also were more likely to become precocious foragers. Relative to the other two groups, bees reared in single-screen cages showed intermediate juvenile hormone biosynthesis rates and titers, and intermediate rates of behavioral development. These results indicate that physical contact is required for total inhibition. We also began to test the hypothesis that worker mandibular glands are the sources of an inhibitory signal. Old bees with mandibular glands removed were significantly less inhibitory towards young bees than were sham-operated and unoperated bees. These results suggest that an inhibitor is produced by the worker mandibular glands.

    Notizen: Abstract Three volatile alkyl-thio-trifluoro propanones inhibiting the esterase in olfactory sensilla of the silkmoths Antheraea polyphemus and A. pernyi were used to test the hypothesis that enzymatic pheromone degradation is responsible for the decline of the receptor potential after pheromone stimulation. Test stimuli were the pheromone components (E,Z)-6,11-hexadecadienyl acetate, a substrate for the sensillar esterase, and (E,Z)-6,11-hexadecadienal, not degraded by the esterase. Each compound acts on a separate type of receptor cell. In both receptor cell types the trifluoro propanones caused a partially reversible reduction of sensitivity as indicated by smaller receptor potential amplitudes and lower nerve impulse frequencies. Since application of the esterase inhibitors did not prolong the decline of the receptor potential of the acetate cell, the esterase is not responsible for the rapid pheromone deactivation. When the trifluoro propanones were applied after the pheromone at high concentrations, they rapidly inhibited (repolarized) both receptor cell types. Experiments with local application of trifluoro propanones revealed that the inhibitory effect spreads within seconds along the length of the sensillum. The inhibition of the electrophysiological responses might be due to an antagonistic action of the trifluoro propanones at the pheromone-binding sites, either at the receptor molecules or at the pheromone-binding protein.

    Notizen: Abstract Based on electroretinogram measurements, fireflies are reported to possess two spectral-sensitivity peaks: one in the near-ultraviolet and the other in the green region. This suggests that at least two kinds of visual pigment should be present (Lall and Lloyd 1989). Analyses by high pressure liquid chromatography revealed that there are two kinds of chromophores, i.e., retinal (A1) and 3-hydroxyretinal (A3), in the compound eye of Japanese fireflies of the genus Luciola (Gleadall et␣al. 1989). Through selective light-adaptation experiments and in vitro analyses by high pressure liquid chromatography, it is demonstrated that the A1 is the chromophore of an ultraviolet-sensitive visual pigment and the A3 is the chromophore of a green-sensitive pigment. The absolute amounts of A1 and A3 were, respectively, 32.1 ± 3.9 and 111.1 ± 35.2 pmol in male, and 26.9 ± 6.9 and 63.4 ± 18.2 pmol in female (mean ± SD per animal). These results indicate that the amount of green-sensitive visual pigment in males is significantly higher than in females. A difference in the distribution of these chromophores is demonstrated in the eyes of female (but not male) fireflies: in the dorsal region of the female eye, the A1:A3 ratio is higher than that for the rest of the eye.

    Notizen: Abstract Tissue displacement of various body surfaces and the auditory midbrain sensitivities to sound were measured in Atelopus species with or without a tympanic middle ear (“eared” and “earless”, respectively). Tissue displacement (vibration) of body regions was measured by laser Doppler vibrometer . The body wall directly overlying the lung is most dramatically displaced by sound pressure in all species tested. The otic (lateral head) region showed low displacement in earless species, but significant displacement to high-frequency sound in eared species. Peak tissue displacement of the body wall occurred within the frequency range of each species' advertisement vocalization. Peak tissue displacement of the otic region of the eared species also occurred within these frequencies. Multi-unit neurophysiological recordings of the auditory midbrain (torus semicircularis) also were obtained. Auditory sensitivity curves showed three distinct regions of sensitivity at low, middle, and high frequencies, the latter located within the frequency range of each species' advertisement vocalization. The correlation between auditory midbrain sensitivity and tissue displacement of the body wall region at advertisement vocalization frequencies, suggests that the body wall/lungs serve as the route of sound transfer to the inner ear in earless species and possibly in the eared species as well.

    Notizen: Abstract Male silkworm moths, Bombyx mori, move their heads side-to-side during zigzag walking toward a source of sex pheromone. High-speed video analysis revealed that changes in walking direction were synchronized with this head turning. Thus the direction of the walking is indicated by the direction of the head turning. Head turning was regulated by neck motor neurons which innervate the cervical ventral muscles and the ventral muscles through the second cervical nerve. To determine the role of the `flipflop' state transition in spike activity carried by descending interneurons from the brain to the thoracic ganglion, we recorded pheromonal responses simultaneously from flipflop descending interneurons and a single cervical ventral 1 neck motor neuron. The activity of the cervical ventral 1 neck motor neuron was synchronized to that of the flipflop descending interneurons. The cervical ventral 1 neck motor neuron was morphologically identified using confocal imaging. Our results demonstrate that the flipflop signals play an important role in instructing turning signals during the pheromone-mediated behavior in a male B. mori.

    Notizen: Abstract Effects of the density of the external medium on gravireception in Loxodes striatus were investigated using Percoll solutions. With increasing density, the swimming rates changed from prevailing in the downward direction to prevailing in the upward direction. A cellular density of 1.036 g cm−3 was determined measuring direction and speed of sedimenting immobilized cells at different accelerations and medium densities. Viscosity increases by Percoll were measured and taken into account. At 30% air saturation Loxodes maintained a negative gravikinesis of approximately −27 μm s−1 at external densities corresponding to cellular density (±0.02 g cm−3). Negative gravikinesis decreased gradually to −9 μm s−1 with the density difference rising from 0.020 to 0.036 g cm−3 (=normal). The data indicate the existence of central gravireception, presumably by the Müller organelle, to generate in swimming Loxodes a constant value of gravikinesis and a bimodal gravitaxis. Peripheral gravireception occurs, in addition to central gravireception, when the transmembrane density difference exceeds 0.02 g cm−3. Peripheral gravireception can neutralize, in part, gravikinesis as raised by the central gravireceptor. We hypothesize that both central and peripheral gravireception of Loxodes guide vertical locomotion in gliding and swimming cells.

    Notizen: Abstract At pupation in Manduca sexta, accessory planta retractor muscles and their motoneurons degenerate in segment-specific patterns. Accessory planta retractor muscles in abdominal segments 2 and 3 survive in reduced form through the pupal stage and degenerate after adult emergence. Electromyographic and electrophysiological recordings show that these accessory planta retractor muscles participate in a new, rhythmic `pupal motor pattern' in which all four muscles contract synchronously at ∼4 s intervals for extended bouts. Accessory planta retractor muscle contractions are driven by synaptic activation of accessory planta retractor motoneurons and are often accompanied by rhythmic activity in intersegmental muscles and spiracular closer muscles. The pupal motor pattern is influenced by descending neural input although isolated abdominal ganglia can produce a pupal motor pattern-like rhythm. The robust pupal motor pattern first seen after pupal ecdysis weakens during the second half of pupal life. Anemometric recordings indicate that the intersegmental muscle and spiracular closer muscle component of the pupal motor pattern produces ventilation. Accessory planta retractor muscle contractions lift the flexible abdominal floor, to which the developing wings and legs adhere tightly. We hypothesize that, by a bellows-like action, the accessory planta retractor muscle contractions circulate hemolymph in the appendages. Morphometric analysis shows that dendritic regression is similar in accessory planta retractor motoneurons with different pupal fates, and that accessory planta retractor motoneurons begin to participate in the pupal motor pattern while their dendrites are regressed.

    Notizen: Abstract Taste receptors, or basiconic sensilla, are distributed over the legs of the locust and respond to direct contact with chemical stimulants. The same chemosensory neurones that responded to contact with salt solutions also responded to particular acidic odours. Odours of food and other chemicals had no effect on the chemosensory neurones. In locusts free to move, an acid odour presented to the tarsus of a hind leg evoked a rapid avoidance movement in which the tarsus was levated, the tibia flexed and the femur levated. Intracellular recordings from motor neurones that innervate muscles of the hind leg showed that when an acid odour was directed towards basiconic sensilla on the leg there was a reciprocal activation of antagonistic motor pools that move the leg segments about each joint. Thus an extensor tibiae motor neurone was inhibited while a flexor tibiae motor neurone was excited, and the tarsal depressor and retractor unguis motor neurones were inhibited while the tarsal levator motor neurone was excited. This method of odour stimulation of taste receptors generates less adaptation than direct contact with chemicals, and therefore represents an ideal method for stimulating taste receptors for further studies on the central pathways processing taste signals.

    Notizen: Abstract Fish hearing specialists (e.g., goldfish, holocentrids, clupeoids, mormyrids) have evolved specialized structures (e.g., Weberian ossicles, swimbladder diverticulae, gas-filled bullae) to enhance their auditory frequency range and threshold sensitivity. The inner ears of anabantoid fish are encased in membranous cranial bones and are protruded into air-filled suprabranchial chambers. This research was intended to test the hypothesis that the gas bubbles inside the suprabranchial chambers may modulate the hearing abilities of anabantoid fish because of their proximity to the membranous bone-encased inner ears. Three species of gourami (blue gourami Trichogaster trichopterus; kissing gourami Helostoma temminckii; dwarf gourami Colisa lalia) were examined. Using the auditory brainstem response recording technique, baseline audiograms tested at 300, 500, 800, 1500, 2500, 4000 Hz were obtained. The air bubbles in the suprabranchial chambers were replaced by water, and the audiograms were remeasured. Thresholds were elevated in all three species. When three blue gouramis were allowed to replenish air into the suprabranchial chambers their hearing abilities returned to baseline levels. These results support the hypothesis that air bubbles in the suprabranchial chambers can affect hearing abilities of gouramis by lowering the thresholds.

    Notizen: Abstract Several mechanisms have been proposed to underlie the characteristic `zigzag' tracks produced by moths flying up an odor plume. To test which, if any, of these are capable of reproducing the animals' behavior, we constructed behavioral-level simulations. The simulations are as tightly constrained as possible by the known biology, and incorporate realistic physical effects such as air turbulence, and delays due to sensory transduction and axonal condition, to mimic the dynamics of sensory information encountered by real moths. Formulated as schemas, the models all share a common set of sensory and motor systems, but differ in the interposed control systems. We analyzed the behavior of the models with the same methods we use for real moths. Even the simplest of the models was capable of successful orientation some of the time, and of producing flight tracks similar to those of moths. Individuals which succeeded in tracking the odor plume produced average behavior not significantly different from that of real moths. As a population, however, none of the models was as successful as the moths. The best of the models had a success rate in tracking the plume of about 30%, compared to the average of 70% seen in the insects.

    Notizen: Abstract To test the hypothesis that spatial excitation patterns along the lateral-line system underlie source localization, we videotaped the orientation behavior of blinded mottled sculpin in response to a small dipole source (50-Hz vibrating sphere) before and after unilateral denervation of the lateral line system on different body regions (head, trunk and head + trunk). Approach pathways were qualitatively similar to those followed by normal intact animals. Abnormal behavior (turning in circles) was not observed. However, the frequency with which fish placed their intact side facing the source increased by 12–89%, depending on the denervation site. The angular accuracy of orientation decreased by 20° to 60° (100% to 370% change) depending on source location and region of lateral line denervated. Deficits tended to be site-specific. For example, unilaterally denervating lateral-line organs on the head resulted in less accurate orienting responses when the source was located on the denervated side of the head, but not on the opposite side of the head or on either side of the trunk. Site-specific deficits and the absence of abnormal approach pathways argue that animals are relying on a point-by-point spatial representation of source location along the sensory surface rather than computations based on bilateral comparisons.

    Notizen: Abstract We studied a specific sensory-motor pathway in the isolated leech ganglia. Pressure-sensitive mechanosensory neurons were stimulated with trains of action potentials at 5–20 Hz while recording the responses of the annulus erector motorneurons that control annuli erection. The response of the annulus erector neurons was a succession of excitatory postsynaptic potentials followed by inhibitory postsynaptic potentials. The excitatory postsynaptic potentials had a brief time-course while the inhibitory postsynaptic potentials had a prolonged time-course that enabled their temporal summation. Thus, the net effect of pressure-sensitive neuron stimulation on the annulus erector neurons was inhibitory. Both phases of the response were mediated by chemical transmission; the excitatory postsynaptic potentials were transmitted via a monosynaptic pathway, and the inhibitory postsynaptic potentials via a polysynaptic one. The pattern of expression of this dual response depended on the field of innervation of the sensory neuron and it was under the influence of cell 151, a non-spiking interneuron, that could regulate the expression of the hyperpolarization. The interaction between pressure-sensitive neurons and annulus erector neuron reveals how sensory specificity, connectivity pattern and regulatory elements interplay in a specific sensory-motor network.

    Notizen: Abstract The femoral chordotonal organ in orthopterans signals proprioceptive sensory information concerning the femur-tibia joint to the central nervous system. In the stick insect, 80 out of 500 afferents sense tibial position, velocity, or acceleration. It has been assumed that the other sensory cells in the chordotonal organ would serve as vibration detectors. Extracellular recordings from the femoral chordotonal organ nerve in fact revealed a sensitivity of the sense organ for vibrations with frequencies ranging from 10 Hz to 4 kHz, with a maximum sensitivity between 200 and 800 Hz. Single vibration-sensitive afferents responded to the same range of frequencies. Their spike activity depended on acceleration amplitude and displacement amplitude of the vibration stimulus. Additionally, 80% of the vibration-sensitive afferents received indirect presynaptic inputs from themselves or from other afferents of the femoral chordotonal organ, the amplitude of which depended on stimulus frequency and displacement amplitude. They were associated with a decrease of input resistance in the afferent terminal. From the present investigation we conclude that the femoral chordotonal organ of the stick insect is a bifunctional sensory organ that, on the one hand, measures position and movement of the tibia and, on the other hand, detects vibration of the tibia.

    Notizen: Abstract  Gull-billed terns (Gelochelidon nilotica) were video-filmed while searching for and capturing fiddler crabs. Search consists of a vertical head nystagmus, with fast upward flicks and downward slow phases made at the angular speed of the substrate in the approximate direction of the bill. The bill points down at about 60° during hunting, but is brought up to 15° from time to time, which brings the visual streak into line with the horizon; 45° roll movements of the head are consistent with alternation between the use of the temporal and central foveas to view the same object. When a crab has been detected the nystagmus is suspended, and the tern tracks the crab continuously as it manoeuvres into a catching position. This may involve tucking the head under the body so that the bill is 45° behind the vertical, and flying up and backwards for some metres, straightening up the head at the same time.

    Notizen: Abstract Acetylcholine released from efferent neurons in the cochlea causes inhibition of mechanosensory hair cells due to the activation of calcium-dependent potassium channels. Hair cells are known to have large-conductance, “BK”-type potassium channels associated with the afferent synapse, but these channels have different properties than those activated by acetylcholine. Whole-cell (tight-seal) and cell-attached patch-clamp recordings were made from short (outer) hair cells isolated from the chicken basilar papilla (cochlea equivalent). The peptides apamin and charybdotoxin were used to distinguish the calcium-activated potassium channels involved in the acetylcholine response from the BK-type channels associated with the afferent synapse. Differential toxin blockade of these potassium currents provides definitive evidence that ACh activates apamin-sensitive, “SK”-type potassium channels, but does not activate carybdotoxin-sensitive BK channels. This conclusion is supported by tentative identification of small-conductance, calcium-sensitive but voltage-insensitive potassium channels in cell-attached patches. The distinction between these channel types is important for understanding the segregation of opposing afferent and efferent synaptic activity in the hair cell, both of which depend on calcium influx. These different calcium-activated potassium channels serve as sensitive indicators for functionally significant calcium influx in the hair cell.

    Notizen: Abstract The flying horseshoe bat Rhinolophus rouxi compensates for Doppler shifts in echoes of their orientation pulses. By lowering the frequency of subsequent calls the echo's constant frequency is stabilized at the so-called reference frequency centered in a narrow and sensitive cochlear filter. This audio-vocal behaviour is known as Doppler shift compensation. To investigate whether the bats depend on binaural cues when compensating, three animals were tested for compensation on a swing before and after unilateral deafening. In each case compensation was severely impaired by unilateral deafening. Individual animals' compensation amplitude was reduced to 28–48% of the preoperational compensation of a +1.8 kHz shift. Doppler shift compensation performance did not recover to control levels during the observed period of 24 h after surgery. In contrast, unilateral middle ear removal which induces a unilateral auditory threshold increase of 9–14 dB does not impair compensation performance on the swing. To mimick Doppler shifts in a fixed setup, the frequencies of recorded echolocation calls were experimentally shifted between 0 and +2 kHz and played back via earphones to six animals. The bats completely compensated the experimental shifts only as long as the interaural intensity difference of the playback did not exceed 20 dB. No animal compensated with monaural playback.

    Notizen: Abstract Nitric oxide and muscarinic agonists both stimulate motoneuron spike activity and cGMP production in the central nervous system of larval Manduca sexta. The possible role of nitric oxide in mediating muscarinic changes in excitability was examined by measuring cGMP accumulation and proleg motoneuron activity while blocking or mimicking the production of nitric oxide. All the muscarinic-induced changes in cGMP are blocked by the nitric oxide-synthase inhibitor, nitro-l-arginine, an effect that is partially prevented by co-incubation with arginine. Action potential blockage with tetrodotoxin revealed that muscarinic increases in cGMP production have both spike-dependent and spike-independent mechanisms. Furthermore, nitric oxide donors can increase proleg motoneuron activity and this stimulation is blocked by 1H-{1,2,4}oxadiazolo{4, 3-a}quinoxalin-1-one suggesting that it is mediated by a nitric oxide-sensitive guanylyl cyclase. In contrast, nitro-l-arginine and a variety of other nitric oxide-synthase inhibitors and nitric oxide scavengers have no significant effect on muscarinic stimulation of motoneuron activity. Therefore, although a nitric oxide sensitive guanylyl cyclase is capable of elevating spike activity and muscarinic agonists can increase cGMP, this mechanism is not necessary for the normal muscarinic increase in excitability. It is concluded that muscarinic receptors are coupled to nitric oxide and cGMP production in neurons other than those controlling the prolegs.

    Notizen: Abstract A group of four cardioexcitatory neurons has been identified in the intestinal ganglia of the mollusc Clione limacina. Relatively weak stimulation of the intestinal neurons induced auricle contractions only, while strong stimulation produced initial auricle contractions followed by full-cycle auricle-ventricle contractions. Intestinal cardioexcitatory neurons probably utilized as their transmitter a peptide similar to Tritonia pedal peptide – they showed pedal peptide-like immunoreactivity, and their effects were mimicked by application of the exogenous pedal peptide. The pedal cardioexcitatory neuron was found to produce strong excitatory effects only on the ventricle contractions. Its stimulation induced ventricle contractions in the quiescent heart or significantly accelerated the rate of ventricle contractions in the rhythmically active heart. The pedal cardioexcitatory neuron apparently utilized serotonin as a neurotransmitter, based upon serotonin immunoreactivity, blocking effect of serotonin antagonists mianserin and methysergide, and the observation that exogenous serotonin mimicked its effect. A dense network of pedal peptide-like immunoreactivity was found both in the auricle and ventricle tissue. Serotonin immunoreactivity was densely present in the ventricle, while the auricle contained only a separate serotonin-immunoreactive unbranched axon. Thus, there are two separate groups of central cardioexcitatory neurons with different effects on heart activity, which together might provide a complex cardio-regulatory function in Clione.

    Notizen: Abstract Thyroidectomy of starlings causes them to remain in breeding condition indefinitely; deactivation of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone neurons that is characteristic of photorefractoriness does not occur. We hypothesise that a neurotrophin, whose presence or ability to function is dependent upon thyroid hormones, is somehow involved in this termination of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone release. Nerve growth factor is one such candidate. Mouse 7S-nerve growth factor dissolved in artificial cerebro-spinal fluid was therefore infused into the lateral ventricle of thyroidectomised male starlings held on long days four times daily for 21 days and 31 days, in separate experiments, to see if photorefractoriness would occur. The result was significant gonadal regression in the treatment groups during the infusion period, with no change in testicular volume in the control groups. Testicular recrudescence occurred after the end of the treatment period. To see if this was a non-specific effect, or progression towards photorefractoriness per se, we used castrated, photorefractory starlings held on long days. Anti-nerve growth factor antibody was infused into the lateral ventricle at increasing concentrations and frequency. There was a significant rise in circulating luteinising hormone levels in the treatment groups as compared to controls, increasing with antibody dosage.

    Notizen: Abstract Mushroom bodies are central brain structures and essentially involved in insect olfactory learning. Within the mushroom bodies γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-immunoreactive feedback neurons are the most prominent neuron group. The plasticity of inhibitory neural activity within the mushroom body was investigated by analyzing modulations of odor responses of feedback neurons during olfactory learning in vivo. In the honeybee, Apis mellifera, feedback neurons were intracellularly recorded at their neurites. They produced complex patterns of action potentials without experimental stimulation. Summating postsynaptic potentials indicate that their synaptic input region lies within the lobes. Odor and antennal sucrose stimuli evoked excitatory phasic-tonic responses. Individual neurons responded to various odors; responses of different neurons to the same odor were highly variable. Response modulations were determined by comparing odor responses of feedback neurons before and after one-trial olfactory conditioning or sensitisation. Shortly after pairing an odor stimulus with a sucrose reward, odor-induced spike activity of feedback neurons decreased. Repeated odor stimulations alone, equally spaced as in the conditioning experiment, did not affect the odor-induced excitation. A single sensitisation trial also did not alter odor responses. These findings indicate that the level of odor-induced inhibition within the mushroom bodies is specifically modulated by experience.

    Notizen: Abstract Honeybees Apis mellifera detect coloured targets presented to the frontal region of their compound eyes using their colour vision system at larger visual angles (α 〉 15°), and an achromatic visual system based on the long-wave photoreceptor type at smaller visual angles (5° 〈 α 〈 15°). Here we examine the capability of the dorsal, ventral and frontal regions of the eye for colour detection. The minimum visual angle αmin at which the bees detect a stimulus providing both chromatic contrast and receptor-specific contrasts to the three receptor types varies for the different regions of the eye: 7.1 ± 0.5° for the ventral region, 8.2 ± 0.6° for the dorsal region and 4.0 ± 0.5° for the frontal region. Flight trajectories show that when the target was presented in the horizontal plane, bees used only the ventral region of their eyes to make their choices. When the targets appeared dorsally, bees used the frontodorsal region. This finding suggests that pure dorsal detection of coloured targets is difficult in this context. Furthermore, αmin in the ventral plane depends on receptor-specific contrasts. The absence of S-receptor contrast does not affect the performance (αmin = 5.9 ± 0.5°), whilst the absence of M- and L-receptor contrast significantly impairs the detection task. Minimal visual angles of 10.3 ± 0.9° and 17.6 ± 3°, respectively, are obtained in these cases. Thus, as for many visual tasks, the compound eye of the honeybee shows a regionalisation of colour detection that might be related to peripheral or central specialisations.

    Notizen: Abstract The aim of our paper was to investigate whether single olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) of the spiny lobster Panulirus argus functionally express more than one type of receptor, examine the consequences of this on coding of mixtures, and compare principles of odorant mixture coding by spiny lobsters with that by the channel catfish, which has been studied extensively using the same experimental and analytical procedures (Caprio et al. 1989; Kang and Caprio 1991). We examined responses of individual taurine-sensitive ORNs to binary mixtures of excitatory compounds, either competitive agonists (taurine, β-alanine, hypotaurine) or non-competitive agonists (taurine, l-glutamate, ammonium chloride, adenosine-5′-monophosphate). Responses to mixtures were compared to two indices: mixture discrimination index (MDI) and independent component index (ICI). Binary mixtures of competitive agonists had MDI values close to 1.0, as expected for competitors. Mixtures of non-competitive agonists had ICI values averaging 0.83, indicating the effects of the components are not independent. We conclude that individual olfactory cells of spiny lobsters can express more than one type of receptor mediating excitation, one of which typically has a much higher density or affinity, and that spiny lobster and catfish olfactory cells encode mixtures of two excitatory agonists using similar rules.

    Notizen: Abstract Many types of sense organs have been demonstrated to show repetitive discharges during walking that could provide informational cues about leg movements and other parameters of locomotion. We have recorded activities of receptors of the distal (tarsal) segments of the cockroach hindleg in restrained and freely moving animals while they were videotaped. These recordings show peaks of activities at the onset and termination of the stance phase. We have morphologically and physiologically identified a joint angle receptor, the tarso-pretarsal chordotonal organ, that contributes to the discharges seen late in stance, prior to the onset of leg flexion in swing. This sense organ encodes the angle and rate of change of the most distal leg joint and specifically discharges when the claws are disengaged from the substrate. Applied displacements of the claws in restrained preparations elicit reflex activation of the tibial flexor muscle and a crossed extensor reflex in the opposite hindleg. These reflexes could function to insure that leg flexion in swing does not occur until the claws are disengaged and to enhance support by the opposite hindleg. Thus, the regular discharges of the chordotonal organ could assure efficient and coordinated muscle contractions and movements during normal, unperturbed walking.

    Notizen: Abstract Young Xenopus tadpoles were used to test whether the pattern of discharge in specific sensory neurons can determine the motor response of a whole animal. Young Xenopus tadpoles show two main rhythmic behaviours: swimming and struggling. Touch-sensitive skin sensory neurons in the spinal cord of immobilised tadpoles were penetrated singly or in pairs using microelectrodes to allow precise control of their firing patterns. A single impulse in one Rohon-Beard neuron (= light touch) could sometimes trigger “fictive” swimming. Two to six impulses at 30–50 Hz (= a light stroke) reliably triggered fictive swimming. Neither stimulus evoked fictive struggling. Twenty-five or more impulses at 30–50 Hz (= pressure) could evoke a pattern of rhythmic bursts, distinct from swimming and suitable to drive slower, stronger movements. This pattern showed some or all the characteristics of “fictive” struggling. These results demonstrate clearly that sensory neurons can determine the pattern of motor output simply by their pattern of discharge. This provides a simple form of behavioural selection according to stimulus.

    Notizen: Abstract 1) Nymphs of the haematophagous bug Triatoma infestans (Heteroptera: Reduviidae) are attracted to volatiles from their own faeces on a servosphere. 2) Biological substrates attractive to triatomines release NH3: wetted triatomine faecal papers release NH3 at 256 ppb NH3 from a 60-g source and stale rabbit urine at 394 ppb from 200 ml. Ammonia released from aqueous NH3 also attracts bugs at doses of 3 ppb and 17 ppb on the servosphere. 3) Bugs typically show negative anemotaxis in a stimulus-free air-stream on the servosphere. At onset of stimulation with ammonia from either biological substrates or aqueous NH3 the bugs stop, move their antennae, turn and walk upwind, i.e. odour-mediated anemotaxis. 4) At lower NH3 doses a latency in attraction is recorded, but this latency disappears when the relative humidity of the stimulus delivery air-stream is dropped from 90 to 35%. 5) Electrophysiological recordings from single olfactory sensilla on antennae of Triatoma nymphs reveal two different types of NH3-excited receptors, both within grooved-peg sensilla. The responses of one of these receptor cells to NH3 has been studied in detail and shows that the action potential discharge rate is dose-dependent over the range 2–200 ppb. 6) The amplitudes of electroantennograms recorded from Triatoma nymphs to NH3 are dose dependent over the range 5–550 ppb.

    Notizen: Abstract The behavior of a ciliate protozoan, Paramecium, is known to represent the electrical state of the cell membrane, and regulation of the membrane potential and ciliary motion are known to involve cAMP and cGMP. The present study shows the synchrony of circadian changes in motility, resting membrane potential and cyclic nucleotides in P. multimicronucleatum. Using an automated system for tracking isolated single microorganisms, the isolated Paramecium cells are confirmed to swim fast and straight during the day (and subjective day) and slowly, with frequent turning, at night (and subjective night). The resting membrane potential is more negative during the day than at night. cAMP and cGMP concentrations oscillate in a manner, such that both cAMP and cGMP are higher during the day (or subjective day) than at night (or subjective night). The ratio of cGMP to cAMP during the light and dark cycle (LD) fluctuates, paralleling the fluctuation of the resting membrane potential measured during the LD. These results suggest that the Paramecium will provide an excellent model to explore daily and circadian orchestration of second messengers mediating signals from ambient light/dark cycles and circadian pacemaker to ion channels and cilia, directly involved in daily and circadian cellular outputs of resting membrane potential and motility.
