Notes: Abstract Brasilia, the capital city of Brazil, is located in the central region of the country. Climate in the area is semitropical with an annual rainfall of 1500 mm. The geological environment in the area consists of low-grade metamorphic rocks. Slates of varying colors, metasiltstone, and quartzite beds are present. Over the Precambrian rocks is a lateritic layer varying in thickness from centimeters up to 30 m. Latosol dominates the existing plateaus, while laterite crusts and immature soils are dominant in the transition zones between plateaus and river valleys. Erosional problems related to the lateritic terrains were known prior to the settlement of the city in 1961. During 1986, erosion became a serious threat when several pseudosinkholes occurred in the urban area. Occurrence of pseudosinkholes resulted in condemnation of an area of 300,000 m2 and the demolition of several buildings. Preliminary studies indicated at the time that underground erosion and pseudosinkholes were generated by shortening of the percolation path of groundwater due to the progress, toward the residential area, of large gullies. This produced an increase in the hydraulic gradient, resulting in the removal of latosol particles. Occurrence of pseudosinkholes in other areas of the city has led the Institute of Geosciences to investigate the problem in more detail. Studies have been conducted looking for correlation between pseudosinkhole occurrence and geologic, geomorphic, geotechnical, and urban development features. Recent results show a much more complex process then previously thought. Field data suggests that termite activity and recharge of the water table by inadequate disposal of residential sewer systems are directly related to the problem.

Notes: Abstract Between November 1993 and August 1994, the spatial and seasonal trophic structures of polychaete annelids were studied in the São Sebastião Channel, southeastern Brazil, located between the mainland of São Paulo State and São Sebastião Island. Four sampling surveys were carried out with a van Veen grab of 0.1 m2 at 15 stations. A total of 12 003 individuals (126 species) was recorded and separated into 14 feeding guilds. Data were analysed with univariate and multivariate techniques (cluster and canonical correspondence analysis). Results showed a strong correlation between trophic groups and sediment variables such as grain size and organic carbon content. The Channel was dominated by surface deposit-feeders, followed by carnivores. Suspension-feeders were confined to medium and coarse sandy sites, environments with high energy. Bottoms where silt, clay and organic carbon predominated showed low polychaete densities. In these places the pollution induced by the sewage discharge from Araçá underwater emissions and by the oil terminal Dutos e Terminais Centro Sul was evident. There were no significant seasonal variations in the trophic structure over the study period, except in fall when densities were low. The polychaetes' relationships within the benthic system are discussed.

Notes: The taxonomy of the genus Leuciscus in the Iberian Peninsula has been presented on the basis of morphological analysis. Two species are believed to occur in Portuguese inland waters, L. carolitertii, the northern basins chub, and L. pyrenaicus, which was described for the Tejo and southern basins. Since only slight differences in the meristic and morphometric characters are observed, the distinction between the two species has been made previously mainly on the basis of osteology. In order to investigate the patterns of genetic differentiation between these species, 24 sites were sampled for both species, and examined electrophoretically for the study of variation at 27 presumptive loci. The results pointed to different levels of population differentiation among drainages and support the recognition of the species level for L. pyrenaicus and L. carolitertii. Our results also suggested that the distribution area of L. pyrenaicus is probably restricted to Tejo and to the small drainages near Tejo, while L. carolitertii seems to have a widespread distribution area, including Lima, Douro, Vouga, Mondego, Guadina and Sado drainages. Moreover, concerning the southern populations, Mira and Arade, the surprisingly high level of differentiation observed at several loci, supports the existence of a further species occurring in these small drainages. The evolutionary aspects related to that differentiation are discussed.

Notes: Seven sites on three tributaries with intermittent flow regimes in the middle reaches of the Guadiana, i.e. Xévora, Caia and Degebe, were sampled approximately every 3 months from April 1995 to April 1997. The density and biomass of fish were greater in downstream rivers and sites. Along the Xévora River, a series of point abundance samples showed evidence of fish zonation along the river. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) suggested a simple relationship between the different species and their preferred habitat. The small-sized Rutilus alburnoides and Leuciscus pyrenaicus used most or all of the habitats with some cover and flowing water. Greater concentrations of larger fish were found in downstream reaches which generally had greater depths as stream width increased: large Barbus microcephalus, B. steindachneri and B. comiza preferred such sites on the Degebe River. Droughts in seasonal Mediterranean streams such as the Guadiana River are a predictable natural disturbance. In the summer, flow ceases and some stretches of river consist of isolated pools. This results in intense aggregations of fish and possible competition for food and/or space. Although some species are well adapted to natural droughts, habitat degradation and possibly the introduction of exotic species contribute to marked variability in species composition.

Notes: The contribution of Chrysonilia sitophila in cork stopper manufacture was studied and a simulation of the industrial processing of cork stoppers was performed. Stoppers cut from slabs where mold development was inhibited were compared with others cut from slabs colonized by C. sitophila alone or with several molds, in terms of physical properties and chemical taints. C. sitophila does not produce 2,4,6-trichloroanisole, guaiacol, or 1-octene-3-ol on cork slabs incubated for 66 days. Since some chlorophenol-related compounds contaminate cork slabs during the production processes, metabolic tests were performed to investigate the capability of molds to produce 2,4,6-trichloroanisole by methylation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol. Degradation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol by C. sitophila resulted in a very high level of degradation without production of 2,4,6-trichloroanisole. C. sitophila restricted growth of other molds on maturing slabs for at least 30 days. These results show that C. sitophila can be exploited by industrial producers of cork stoppers since it is able to inhibit the development of other molds and it does not produce the compounds responsible for ‘cork-taint’, even in the presence of chlorophenols. Notes: Abstract The content of catecholamines and dihydroxyphenylalanine in larvae of the nudibranch Phestilla sibogae was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection. Dihydroxyphenylalanine, norepinephrine and dopamine were identified in larvae of all ages examined (5 through 12 days post-fertilization). Dihydroxyphenylalanine could be accurately quantified only in larvae of ages 8 through 12 days, when its average concentration increased from 0.62 to 6.71 × 10−2 pmol μg protein−1. Between ages 5 and 12 days dopamine rose from 0.081 to 0.616 pmol μg protein−1, and norepinephrine from 0.45 to 2.17 × 10−2 pmol μg protein−1. Dihydroxyphenylalanine, dopamine and norepinephrine were also measured at different stages of metamorphic progress in 10- to 12-day larvae. Dihydroxyphenylalanine increased by a factor of 2.4 between the onset and completion of metamorphosis, but levels of dopamine and norepinephrine remained stable. One millimolar alpha-methyl-dl-m-tyrosine, an inhibitor of catecholamine synthesis, inhibited natural metamorphosis and depleted endogenous norepinephrine and especially dopamine, respectively, to 75% and 35% of control values. The existence of unexpectedly high levels of catecholamines in metamorphically competent larvae, and the association of catecholamine depletion with inhibition of metamorphosis, indicate that these compounds may participate in the control of gastropod development.

Notes: Abstract  This paper describes the use of digitally-compensated thermocouples to characterise the time-resolved behaviour of the temperature field in turbulent non-premixed jet flames for Re?2×104, including the transport of heat and the related temperature dissipation. The experimental procedures used are analysed, including the thermocouple time constant determination and the numerical derivative compensation method, and assessments of accuracy are provided for the cross-correlation techniques used in order to estimate high-order temperature statistics in the flames studied. The results quantify the influence of the spatial resolution of the measuring systems on the accuracy of correlation values, regarding the characteristics scales of the flames studied, and demonstrate the applicability of fine-wire thermocouples to characterise the turbulent transport and the dissipation of temperature in non-premixed jet flames.

Notes: Abstract We present a numerical solution to the equation of motion of the classical onedimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet with two anisotropies in the presence of an applied magnetic field in the small velocities limit. Our results will permit us to obtain upper bounds to the Double sine-Gordon approximation.
