Notes: Summary The frequency curves of many cellulose samples contain common maxima for DP-values of 70–100 and 200. After a strong degradation most of the cellulose accumulates at a DP of about 100. This tendency is shown to be caused by the crystallinity of the cellulose walls. The crystalline areas, the micelles, have been isolated as an aqueous colloidal solution, and in the electron microscope they are found to be rod-like particles with a length of 500–600 Å and a width of 50–100 Å. These results are in agreement with earlier X-ray investigations. Electron and X-ray diffraction studies have proved that the crystalline structure and the lattice dimensions of the isolated micelles are exactly the same as those of the fibre cellulose. After treatment with ultrasonic waves, an electron microscope investigation has demonstrated that the whole cellulose fibre is built up of elementary fibrils (micellar strings) of the same thickness as the micelles.

Notes: Summary The effect of desoxyribonuclease and ribonuclease on suspended mitochondria is examined phase-microscopically, making use of secondary mitochondrial swelling in distilled water. The ribonucleoprotein is localized only in the mitochondrial body. The latter disappears completely under the effect of ribonuclease. The membrane possibly contains very small amounts of desoxyribonucleoprotein next to lipoid substances. The mitochondrial body on the other hand appears to be free of these substances.

Notes: Summary (1) The composition of diets brings great modification to the sensitivity of guinea-pigs to röntgen radiations. (2) Two diets were fed comparatively. They only differed by the fresh vegetables supplementing a basal ration of oats and bran: cabbage in the first instance, beets in the second. (3) This latter diet increased considerably the mortality rate as well as the hæmorrhages, but had no affect on the damage to the bonemarrow.

Notes: Summary It is shown that mitochondria suspended in distilled water are particularly well adapted to electron-microscopic examination, since the membrane can be loosened from the mitochondrial body by this method. The membrane is composed of short protein fibrils and globular protein molecules, and has a thickness of approximately 200 Å. The body cannot be further illuminated, but parts of the periphery show that the protein is here much more compact. It is assumed that this is dependent upon its lipoid contents.

Notes: Summary A comparison of the most modern textbooks of plant physiology with those from the beginning of the century shows that to-day fertilizing with carbonic acid is an accepted fact, at least in cultures made under glass. But fertilizing is also done with cultures in the open and in agriculture with the help of this nutrient gas, which develops out of the ground through microbiotic processes on materials containing carbon, often called for short “humus”. Between these processes, and leaf respiration on the one hand and the assimilation of the green on the other, follows a variable equilibrium in respect to the no longer utilizable carbonic acid of the atmosphere. Maximal yields are unobtainable when these relations are not taken into account. Some basic methods for reaching maximal yields are described.

Notes: Summary The biogenesis of the carotenoids inPhycomyces is studied as function of the medium. Theβ-carotene being the essentiel carotenoid of this fungi. A medium is prepared in which glucose and asparagine are replaced by ammonium lactate. In this medium there is a development but no formation of carotene. The presence of sodium acetate gives a normal carotenoid formation. The acetate reacts like a precursor of the carotene ofPhycomyces.

Notes: Summary By means of the precipitation-reaction it has been fully proved that the albumen of the lama and the camel are closely related and that they can be clearly distinguished from the albumen of other animals as e.g. cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, pig and horse. This evidence is of high scientific interest for it shows the exceptional position held by the two animal species among the ruminants and the cloven-hoofed animals respectively. This reaction is also of great practical value because it allows when controling and testing meat and meat products to state the presence of lama and camel meat and to detect falsifications.

Notes: Summary Tyramine and Tyrosine given with food produce in rats a lethal and toxic syndrome which varies in intensity according with the dose given and the age of the rats: toxic and lethal activity is greater in rats just weaned. Substances with antihistaminic activity: RP 32–77 and Antadril, either abolish or inhibit the lethal and toxic activity of Tyramine and Tyrosine, showing a more evident activity when the dose used is greater. The antitoxic activity of the substances with an anti-histaminic activity seems to be connected with their possible capacity for activating the amino-oxydase of the intestine and viscera of the entire organism.

Notes: Summary A series of grafts of blastopore lips, previously fixed in formol saline and washed, has been carried out. The graft lodged in the blastocœl gave only two inductions, which were moreover atypical, out of 21 cases studied. Each of these two cases shows an atypical neural vesicle composed of patches of neural cells among little-differentiated “neuroidal” cells. The other 19 cases show the disappearance or reduction of the inducing ability of the organizer; this provokes at the most an epiblastic thickening consisting of closely packed, small polyhedral cells. An interpretation of the facts is proposed in accordance with the biochemical data. A series of experiments is in progress at present, whose aim is to ascertain the conditions of the reactions set going during the action of the formol on the organizer material.

Notes: Summary A method is described which makes quantitative studies of the action of Cortisone on connective tissue possible. Foreign body granulomas are provoked in rats by subcutaneous implantation of pellets of compressed cotton. Application of Cortisone results in a diminution of granuloma formation, which can be expressed quantitatively by determining the fresh and the dry weight. Cortisone was effective by local as well as by general application, similar concentrations producing the same degree of inhibition of connective tissue.

Notes: Summary It is generally admitted that the red pigment characteristic of the first phase of melanogenesis, “red body”, and Hallachrome are the same substance, viz. 2-carboxy-2,3-dihydroindole-5,6-quinone. However, these two substances possess such widely differing properties that it is almost impossible to regard them as identical. It seems difficult to decide on the basis of the existing evidence which of the two is really 2-carboxy-2,3-dihydroindole-5,6-quinone, if indeed either one of them be.

Notes: Summary The results of the periodate oxidation ofd-glucosamine,N-acetyl-d-glucosamine, methyl α-d-glucosaminide and methylN-acetyl-α-d-glucosaminide at ap H lower than 5 and at a temperature lower than 5° were in good agreement with the theory, thus eliminating the possibility of the occurrence of side-reactions. Using these conditions of periodate oxidation the structure of chitin was confirmed to be a continuous chain ofN-acetyl-d-glucosamine residues connected throughβ 1–4 linkages. The structure of hyaluronic acid was established as a non-ramified polymer ofd-glucuronic acid andN-acetyl-d-glucosamine residues connected throughβ 1–3 linkages.

Notes: Summary In Bleiberg-Kreuth (Carinthia, Austria) luminescent sphalerites were found. They show in the filtered ultraviolet, beside the familiar yellow luminescence, also red, blue, green, and violet colours. As demonstrated by experiments, the luminescence of natural zinc-sulfide is caused by activators, such as Cu, Ag, Mn, and Fe, in trace quantities. The same elements were identified in the luminescent sphalerites of Kreuth by spectrographical investigations. The activating minor elements are arranged periodically in planes parallel (111) orientated by the tetrahedronal faces.

Notes: Summary It is true that after having extracted the myosin, actomyosin, and actin components of a striated muscle, it is possible to obtain still other proteins when Weber's urea solution is used. We could not confirm that those proteins are of a fibrillary nature: their solution never showed negative or positive double refraction of flow.

Notes: Summary (1) By means of a simple method the conditions were investigated for contraction and relaxation of actomyosin (AM) under the influence of potassium, magnesium, and calcium ions, of adenosintriphosphate (ATP) or muscle-adenylic-acid and phosphocreatin. (2) Raising the calcium chloride concentration to 0.2 m and raising thep H from 6.9 to 7.3 hinders the contraction of actomyosin by ATP; in uncontracted AM-gel, ATP leads to a relaxation under these conditions. (3) Relaxation of the contracted gel can be brought about by dissolving in potassium chloride and precipitating by dilution: calcium furthers this relaxation; afterward ATP leads again to a contraction. (4) Remainders of ATP from the first contraction lead in this stage again to a partially contracted gel; phosphocreatin reinforces this effect. (5) Certain SH-groups and amino groups, but not carboxyl groups, are involved in the production of the contraction. (6) SH- and amino groups are also necessary for the ATP-ase effect. The relation of actomyosin-ATP-ase to contraction, of myosin-ATP-ase to relaxation is pointed out.

Notes: Summary Proteins of the human serum were divided in two fractions by salting out: one fraction containing chieflyγ-globulin, and another freed of thisγ-globulin, called the “rest-proteins”. The effect of the two fractions on leucocyte migration was investigated. The velocity of migration and the total distance covered by the leucocytes are greatly enhanced by the presence of the “γ-globulins”. “γ-globulins” also have an attracting power on leucocytes, that is to say that proteins contained in theγ-globulin-fraction have a positive chemotactic effect on leucocytes.

Notes: Summary By experimental research on single crystals of ice grown in a refrigerator an intensive piezo-electrical effect has been observed. This is about tenfold greater than that of Turmalin cet. par. The polar properties of ice, which is gotten by freezing water, may be often masked by twinning.

Notes: Summary By using a solvent mixture of 80 vol. sec. butanol, 20 vol. formic acid (90%), and 50 vol. water, the separation of 2-amino-6-hydroxy-pteridin-carboxylic acid-8 and -9 by paper partition chromatography is possible. In mixtures both acids can readily be distinguished by their different fluorescenc (blue and green) after chromatographic separation. By condensation of 2,4,5-triamino-6-hydroxy-pyrimidine with C3-compounds mixtures of 8- and 9-isomers (sometimes containing only a few percent of one isomer) are always obtained.

Notes: Summary (1) Biotin (vitamine H) is synthesized by isolated pearoots cultured aseptically in a synthetical medium. The biotin-content of the dry material from 9 passages over a period of 150 days shows more or less constant values, which proves that the root is highly autonomic in synthesizing biotin. Nevertheless it is possible, that the leafs of the intact plant might influence in some way the metabolism of biotin of the root. (2) Nicotinamide is not an essential factor for undertaining growth of roots, but in its presence biotin-values are remarkably increased. Nicotinamide might be regarded as a complementary factor for the race ofPisum investigated.

Notes: Summary The effect of carbon monoxide upon oxygen consumption and ion absorption in wheat roots has been studied. In the dark, inhibition of respiration by CO (in sufficiently high concentrations) is nearly as great as the maximum inhibition in cyanide. Similarly, the chloride absorption is strongly inhibited. Inhibition of respiration and ion absorption by CO is light-reversible.

Notes: Summary (1) When most of the proteins of the myogen group have been extracted by washing the muscle with water, it is still possible, if the muscle tissue is dehydrated by acetone, to extract new proteins of the myogen group, among them myokinase. (2) If the muscle tissue is dehydrated by acetone, when most of the proteins of the myosin group have been extracted previously by washing the muscle with Weber's solution, it is then possible to extract G-actin with water, and this protein can be polymerized into F-actin by salts. If the myosins have not been extracted first, the G-actin obtained does not polymerize. (3) If the muscle tissue is dehydrated by alcohol + ether (or better by acetone), tropomyosin can be obtained only if the muscle tissue has been previously washed with water. (4) If acetone—or alcohol ether—is replaced by carbon disulfide or protein ether, one gets similar results, but less protein is extracted.

Notes: Summary Some toxic effects of colchicine in mice were investigated. The DL50 of the drug is reported to produce a fatty degeneration of the liver; the same takes place, to a lower degree, in the heart muscle and kidney parenchyma. A better survival rate of the female than male mice treated with the same doses of colchicine was observed, the ratio being 1:4.

Notes: Summary Thiourea has been found to form additional compounds with a great number of aliphatic, aromatic, and other cyclic compounds of various kind. More than eighty complexes have been prepared and examined. Most of these additional products have been recognized to have the same structure: the molecules of the organic compounds lay in channels of the lattice built by the thiourea molecules. The diameter of the channels is greater than that found in the urea complexes formerly described. Preferably substances with a branched chain structure or with unplanar cyclic molecules are added by thiourea, but under certain conditions it is also possible to prepare complexes which contain unbranched or planar molecules such as normal paraffins or benzene respectively. The mole ratio of the explored thiourea compounds is proportional to the length of the molecules enclosed, just as is the case with the urea enclosure compounds.

Notes: Summary The duration of the effect of a water-soluble and an oil-menstrum preparation of heparin was examined on rabbits. The oil-soluble preparation delayed, using equal dosage, the coagulation of the blood about three times longer. 1000 I.U./kg appeared to be the most economical dosage. In rabbits the effect of heparin lasted for approximately 20 hours.

Notes: Summary It is shown that the venous pulse on the isolated vein of the wing membrane ofChiroptera (preparation of the venous sack) is provoked by two different stimuli:— (1) by extension (internal pressure of the vessel), (2) by a humoral factor, which is shown (a) in the serumdialysate (b) in Recosen, a protein-free heart extract of mammalia. The Recosen-factor is superior to the dialysed serum factor as regards the increasing of amplitude, tonus and frequency. Based on these and former experiments an interpretation of the non-innervation of the veins of the wing membrane is given.

Notes: Summary The molecules of an ideal gas are supposed to be congruent and convex bodiesK of random form. The “kinetic radius” ϱ is defined as radius of those spherical moleculesK 0 which—according to the classicalClausius-Maxwell principles of the kinetic gas theory and under the same external conditions—have the same mean free path and the same number of collisions as the moleculesK. The spheresK 0 are supposed to be equivalent to the bodiesK regarding the kinetic actions. In this note the formula $$\rho = \sqrt {(M^2 + 4\pi F)/32\pi ^2 } $$ is deduced (M=integral of the mean curvature,F=surface ofK).

Notes: Summary Osseous grafts were removed from the skull of rabbits and implanted into the mucles of the same rabbit. From one to twenty-one days after the operation, dosages of calcium and phosphorus were performed. The following results were found: (1) At the beginning, the grafts undergo necrosis and resorption. (2) Chemical analysis did not completely solve the problems of osteolysis and oncosis. (3) In most cases the graft is dissolved. (4) A difference in the chemical constitution between cortical and cancellous bone was shown.

Notes: Summary Aliphatic bisquarternary ammonium compounds have the same muscle-stimulating properties as nicotine. It is also shown that the muscle-paralysing action of nicotine and of these compounds have the same characteristics: they reduce the direct excitability of the muscle and their paralysing activity is reduced by pretreatment withd-Tubocurarine.

Notes: Summary A method for the demonstration of lipase activityin situ was given byGomori. The author examined the specificity of the reaction, the loss of lipolytic activity during the necessary manipulations (fixation, dehydratation, etc.) and the various sources of error (diffusion, unspecific reactions, threshold value of the method). A few modifications of the original technique, e. g. the incubation of the non-deparaffined sections, were necessary for obtaining optimal results. Furthermore, a method for the quantitative estimation of lipolytic activity was developped.

Notes: Summary The class of the convex rotatory bodies of the fixed lengthl is to be considered and it is shown, that for with firm volume demonstrate the greatest M. The proof uses discussions of curves. The main difficulty consists in the fact, that a certain stretch of the picture is not always convex to beneath. [This difficulty was omitted at the analogie (V, F)-problem.]

Notes: Summary The growth in area of plant cell walls consists in loosening local fields of the tubular texture of cellulose microfibrils. This loosening must be caused by intensive local plasm growth which pushes the existing microfibrils aside. This extension growth by local spots is termedmosaic growth.

Notes: Summary The effect of iodoacetate (20 mg/kg sc. 32 mg/kg) on the structures of the retina was investigated in rabbits. The left, and then the right, eye was tested after a period of 22 and 38 days respectively following the intravenous administration of the substance. At both times the electroretinogram was completely extinguished. Histological examination revealed selective destruction of rods and cones, whereas bipolars and ganglion cells were more resistent.

Notes: Summary The “Theory of Residue” explains how the absorption of high frequency harmonicschanges the tone quality and loudness of old violins less than that of modern ones. Indeed, following this theory, the high frequency harmonic components directly contribute to the sensation of fundamental sound. Therefore in new violins, rich in high partial components, the room absorption makes itself felt not only in these, but also in the fundamental component sensation.

Notes: Summary The effect of 17-hydroxy-11-dehydrocorticosterone (Cortisone), 11-desoxycorticosterone (DCA), 21-acetoxy-pregnenolone (Artisone) on experimental Coccidioidal granuloma of the Rat has been investigated. While in controls, in DCA- and Artisone-treated animals the infection remained localized, 3 out of 5 Cortisone-treated rats presented a diffusion of the pathological process to the spleen and the lungs. Histologically: in the control animals there was a profuse growth of all elements of new connective tissue; in the DCA-and Artisone-treated rats a slight reduction of connective elements was observed; in Cortisone-treated rats the production of connective elements was strongly inhibited.

Notes: Summary Chimeric adhesive organs produced by xenoplastic ectodermal transplantations betweenBombinator andTriton germs are described. The adhesive organs are very different in the two amphibian groups. The projecting rodshaped balancer of theTriton larva is formed by two epidermal layers and an axial mesodermal core (mesectoderm), while the flat adhesive sucker of the youngBombinator tadpole consists mainly of one epidermal layer of secretion cells. Probably the two organs are either non-homologous, or the homology is partial only. Nevertheless, in the chimeras young balancers are formed, the epidermal layers and the mesectoderm of which are provided in part byTriton and in part byBombinator.

Notes: Summary 5,5-Dimethyldehydroresorcinol-dimethylcarbamate although only slightly toxic to warm blooded animals, has remarkable insecticidal properties both on ingestion and on contact. In higher concentrations the compound is effective against a wide range of insects, in very low dosages it only kills aphids. In dilutions of 0.01–0.02% the substance is efficient against numerous important aphids and does not affect the predators and parasites, e.g. the useful insects of the orchard fauna; it has, therefore a definite selective action. The substance is translocated through the plant in the organic and inorganic sapstream and thus has a certain “systemic effect”. It acts mainly on the central nervous system of the insects and produces tetanus-like muscular convulsions which occur at short but regular intervals.

Notes: Summary The behaviour ofBlattella germanica in the maze is subject to great variations according to different wavelengths, of the same energy. No learning in red, green, and yellow; significant learning in blue. From the red to the blue, augmentation of errors may be observed; learning varies as the sum of the errors. White light gives a particular phenomenon: with the same energy as for blue light, the sum of errors is less, and also the run time. Elytra play a role in stimulus reception; the sum of the errors is greater after their varnishing. Ocellae play the most prominent role; learning is abolished after their varnishing. They seem to apprehend light intensity. The role of general excitement and particular stimuli is discussed; if the general excitement is low (varnishing of the elytra) and stimuli are high, there are many errors, and the run time is very long; however, learning may be observed; when the stimuli are at a low level (varnishing of the ocellæ) and general excitement is normal, there are few errors, but no learning.Blattella do not enter their feeding box after varnishing of the eyes and ocellæ; their motivation, consequently, is greatly disturbed, and perhaps learning is impossible without this motivation. Learning establishes an equilibrium between general excitement level and stimuli to the ocellæ.
