Description: A species with the habit of Aristida divaricata H. et B., but welldistinguished by the wanting column and the curious tuberculate lemmas. Closely allied to Aristida gentilis HENR., which differs however in the other position of the glumes and in the smooth lemma. The species resembles in some characters the Aristida Parishii HITCHC., the latter has however a totally different shape of the panicle and the lemma is not tuberculate-hispid, but scabrous only on the upper half. Among duplicates from the U. S. Nat. Herbarium, kindly received from Mrs. A. CHASE, I found a second plant belonging to the species, a plant also collected in Arizona, north slope of Santa Rita Mountains, leg. D. GRIFFITHS no. 7269.

Description: The kindness of Dr. GOETHART has enabled me to investigate all the Myxomycetes (Myxogasteres, Mycetozoa) which are kept in the Rijks-Herbarium at Leyden. Among the older collections I found those of PERSOON, V. HALL, HANKARL, BUSE, JUNGHUHN, WAGNER. Only a little part of these collections remains, owing to the way, in which the above-mentioned collectors used to conserve their materials.

Description: Die Korallen, die in den folgenden Zeilen besehrieben werden sollen, gehören drei verschiedenen Sammlungen an. Die Korallen von Nias fanden sieh unter den umfangreichen Aufsammlungen, die der niederländische Verwaltungsbeambte E. E. W. Gs. Schröder auf dieser Insel gemacht und dem Leidener Museum überwiesen hat. Die interessanten Fungiden wurden von Herrn J. Bosscha bei M. G. Linggapadang in der Residenz Tegal auf Java gesammelt und dem hiesigen Museum geschenkt. Die Korallen von Borneo schliesslich wurden mir von Herrn Dr. Tobler, Abteilungsvorsteher am naturhistorischen Museum in Basel, zur Bearbeitung anvertraut, sie bilden eine Ergänzung zu dem früher von Borneo beschriebenen Korallenmaterial.

Description: Behalve uit de koralen, die ik ter plaatse verzameld heb, werd het studiemateriaal samengesteld uit de verzamelingen der Rijks-Geologische Musea der Universiteiten te Leiden, te Utrecht en te Groningen en uit die der Landbouwhoogeschool te Wageningen. Verder uit de collectie van Teyler’s Stichting te Haarlem, van het Natuur-Historische Genootschap in Limburg en de Stadsverzameling in het „Athenaeum”, beiden te Maastricht. Bovendien heb ik de uitgebreide collectie van het Musée Royal d’Histoire Naturelle te Brussel en de origineelen van Goldfuss te Bonn, ter plaatse mogen bestudeeren. Een doorzoeken der Universiteitsverzameling te München en der Technische Hoogeschool te Delft leverde mij geen nieuw materiaal meer. Van elk der beschreven soorten kon ik minstens één goed exemplaar samenbrengen in het Rijks-Geologisch Museum te Leiden, alleen Favia Maastrichtensis wordt te Wageningen bewaard.

Description: Dans les flores de MIQUEL, de BOERLAGE, de KOORDERS, dans „Naturliche Pflanzenfamilien” de ENGLER et PRANTL, comme dans „Genera Plantarum” de BENTHAM et HOOKER et dans „l’Index Kewensis”, partout, on trouve le nom de Schoutenia (avec le nom de l’espèce ovata) et comme synonyme Actinophora (fragrans). Ces dernières années la station d’essai de sylviculture dans l’île de Java au contraire a posé en avant le nom d’ Actinophora avec le nom de l’espèce, qui s’y rapporte, fragrans. En général il me semble préférable de ne pas changer sans nécessité les noms généralement usités, surtout pas dans les sciences appliquées et dans la vie pratique. Pour le cas qu’il y ait des raisons graves pour remplacer un nom par un autre, la branche de la science pure qui s’est occupée de ce problème aura soin le plus souvent de publier le changement de nom; si cela ne se fait pas, il serait à souhaiter que quiconque trouve le changement désirable (homme des sciences appliquées ou de la vie pratique) en consulte d’abord la science pure.

Description: 1. L’été de 1923 j’avais l’occasion de visiter l’herbier du British Muséum à Londres et celui de WALLICH dans les royal botanical Gardens of Kew près de Londres. Et je pouvais constater que le no. 1163 du catalogue WALLICH (1829) est vraiment notre Walikoekoen. Tous les exemplaires de WALLICH sont provenus d’un ou de plusieurs arbres dans le jardin botanique de Calcutta où l’espèce avait été introduite en 1816 par le Dr. BURKE de l’île de France (Mauritius) d’après une note dans le catalogue de WALLICH ¹) du honorable Company’s botanical Garden Sibpur near Calcutta vol. II p. 838, comme M. le superintendent de ce jardin a bien voulu me rapporter. Le superintendent ne savais pas m’expliquer comment l’espèce avait été portée à Mauritius de l’île de Java (son seul lieu natal) avant qu’elle y fut scientifiquement découverte par KORTHALS en 1838.

Description: De uitgestrekte grindafzettingen der Pleistocene Maas-delta vormen het typische plateaukarakter in het Zuid-Limburgsche landschap. In de dalen, die de latere loop der Maas en haar zijrivieren hierin gesneden hebben, komt in de Zuidelijke helft het Senoon aan den dag. Het grinddek van dit z.g. hoofdterras 1) zakt begrijpelijkerwijze langs de dalhellingen naar beneden en vormt een kapvormige bedekking over het Senoon heen. Waar plaatselijk nog resten van Tertiair (Pliocene-mariene zanden) aanwezig zijn, worden deze zoodoende geheel verborgen en is hun aanwezigheid (in dit gedeelte) alleen uit groeven en boringen bekend. Met uitzondering van enkele diepe groeven op het plateau zelf is dus alleen in de dalen het Senoon ontsloten en wordt daar nog op menige plaats door een dikke laag van jongere grind- en lössafzettingen (midden- en laag terras 1) ) bedekt. Ten Noorden van een strook, die ongeveer van Meerssen naar Kunrade loopt, is dit Senoon tot ongeveer 85 meters verzakt. Deze breukrand is door W. C. Klein in kaart gebracht 2). Van het Senoon komen in Zuid-Limburg de volgende 5 typen voor, die naar plaatsnamen genoemd zijn: Maastrichtsch Tufkrijt (= M) Kunrader formatie (=K) Boven-Senoon Gulpensch krjjt (=G) Groenzand van Vaals (=V) Akensch zand (=A) Onder-Senoon Deze benamingen zullen in het vervolg herhaaldelijk aangeduid worden door de hierboven gegeven afkortingen. Nadat eerst eenige geologische overzichtschetsen gepubliceerd waren (Labry, Binkhorst), verscheen in 1911 een nauwkeurige karteering van het te bespreken gebied, door Uhlenbroek verricht; Maastrichter en Kunrader formatie werden door hem met dezelfde letter en kleur aangegeven, Labry had deze daarentegen van elkaar gescheiden gehouden op zijn geologische schetskaart van Zuid-Limburg.

Description: As I have already pointed out in the Narrative of the Voyage (this journal Nr. 23) there is a marked difference between Caracasbay and Spanish Water, the former having clear blue ocean water, the latter being rather muddy. Spanish bay is quite the same as Caracasbay except that it is less sheltered against the tradewinds. Spanish Port is a narrow channel connecting Spanish Water with the bay and shows the transition in the different nature of the water. This difference has a great influence on the fauna as is shown especially by the coral population. For the rest the coralfauna of the West Indies is extensively described by POURTALÈS (III. Cat. Mus. Comp. Zool. No. IV. 1871), VERRILL (Trans. Conn. Ac. Vol. 11. 1901), and VAUGHAN (The stony corals of the Porto Rican waters. U. S. Fish. Comm. Bull. Description: Du 21 décembre 1922 au 13 mars 1923 je fis un séjour dans les îles Canaries, savoir: à Ténériffe (21 déc.—5 mars) et dans la Grande-Canarie (5—13 mars). Madame A. DEN TEX-BOISSEVAIN, ma compagne de voyage, séjourna encore et botanisa dans l’île de Palma du 19 février au 1 mars 1923. Bien que je fusse partie dans le but de recueillir des plantes supérieures pour le „Ryks-Herbarium” (Herbier de l’État), il s’entend que, m’intéressant spécialement pour l’étude des Champignons supérieurs des Pays-Bas, j’avais un vif désir d’explorer la flore mycologique canarienne.

Description: During an excursion to the South of Switserland, Professor Escher suggested my mapping out the south-western corner of the porphyry district of Lugano. I gladly agreed, for his detailed examination of the Morcote-peninsula had already shown that many interesting facts had escaped unobserved during the small-scale mapping forty years ago; and it was, therefore, highly probable that the projected work would prove fruitful. The necessary field-work was carried out in the spring of the years 1924 and 1925. The collected material I examined in the geological museum of Leiden, where it will remain in future.

Description: Le terrain exploré est limité au Nord par une ligne droite, qui va de Ghirla en passant par Marzio à Brusimpiano. La limite Est est formée par le lago di Lugano et par la vallée de Porto Ceresio jusqu’à Pogliana. La limite Sud est plus irrégulière; elle passe au Sud de Pogliana vers le sommet de la Poncione di Ganna et descend après vers S. Gemolo. La limite Ouest est formée par le Valganna. La surface de tout le terrain exploré est à peu près de 24,5 km2. Les limites Nord et Sud sont formées par des sédiments mésozoïques, que je n’ai point examinés. Les récentes recherches de M. A. Senn nous ont fait connaître les formations mésozoïques au Sud de mon terrain. Les mêmes formations au Nord constituent le sujet d’une étude déjà entreprise.

They were not fully grown but measured about 4.50 mm in length, and the large incubatory pouch was filled with minute eggs. This is the species described by THORELL and referred by him to the genus Doropygus, but it differs so much from the other species of that genus that both GIESBRECHT and SARS recognized it as generically distinct. GIESBRECHT referred it to COSTA’S genus Notopterophorus, and SARS created for it the new genus named above, which seems to be correct.

Description: Bei meiner Untersuchung dieser von Dr. VAN DER HORST auf Cura\xc3\xa7ao gesammelten Mollusken, standen mir auch wieder Tiere aus dem zoologischen Museum in Kopenhagen und aus dem Senckenbergischen Museum zur Verf\xc3\xbcgung, wof\xc3\xbcr ich Dr. TH. MORTENSEN und Dr. F. HAAS meinen wohlgemeinten Dank bringe. Die Aeolidiadae wurden in einer in der 24. Lieferung dieser Zeitschrift erschienenen Arbeit behandelt, die \xc3\xbcbrigen Tiere hoffe ich in einer sp\xc3\xa4teren Arbeit zu besprechen.

Description: The cirripedes of Cura\xc3\xa7ao and the southern borders of the Caribbean Sea have not been investigated hitherto. A collection of the littoral forms made by Doctor C. J. VAN DER HORST in 1920 contains the following species.\nDescriptions, figures and references to other literature of the species may be found in the Monographs of DARWIN \xc2\xb9) and of PILSBRY \xc2\xb2).

Description: For the reason that no records for this group of animals have been made anywhere near that region, the Bryozoa collected by Dr. C. J. VAN DER HORST are of great interest. The collection is quite limited in the number of species, as might have been expected on account of the inconspicuous nature of most of them. Only the specialist in the group, accustomed to collect these minute animals and familiar with their habits of growth, occurrence and appearance, need ever expect to take a very complete series of them. Most of the species in the collection appear to be there incidentally, attached to shells, corals, etc., and were later found on close inspection. A considerable number of the species are represented by only one or two specimens and the examination of debris under the binocular microscope yielded several species in the form of minute portions of colonies. No doubt the bryozoan fauna of the waters about Cura\xc3\xa7ao includes several times as many species as appear in this report.\nIt is a typical collection of the tropical seas as far as it goes. Most of the species represented here are found in the Florida waters, where they have been recorded by SMITT (1872\xe2\x80\x9473) and OSBURN (1914). LEVINSEN (1909) has listed incidentally a few of the species for the region about the Virgin Islands (at that time the Danish West Indies). Otherwise, practically nothing is known of the Bryozoa in all that vast region which includes the West Indies, the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.

Description: The authors who have studied the Rhizocephala have a quite different opinion as to the limits of the species, especially those of the genus Sacculina. On the one side KOSSMANN (1874) and GIARD (1887, 1888) are convinced that every specimen of Sacculina found on a certain crab has to be separated specifically from those living on another host. On the other hand SMITH (1906) unites all the described species of Sacculina into one widely distributed species which has to keep the name Sacculina carcini. A better way in separating the forms of Sacculina into different species is without doubt the one avoiding both the extremes of the above-cited authors, as explained by GU\xc3\x89RINGANIVET (1911). Only in the cases where morphological structures of specific value are found the forms are to be regarded as different species. A more detailed account of the questions dealing with the difficulties of the species-problem in Sacculina will be published in the monograph on the Rhizocephala of the Siboga Expedition, now in preparation by Professor VAN KAMPEN and the present author. Here only may be pointed to some particularities found in the material dealt with in this paper.\nThe material collected by Dr. VAN DER HORST at Cura\xc3\xa7ao contains four specimens of Rhizocephalid parasites. Three of these belong to the genus Sacculina, the fourth is a representative of the genus Lernaeodiscus. All of these differ from the hitherto known species of the two genera and are therefore described as new species in this paper. Though the material is comparatively small it is of great interest since the three species of Sacculina have a quite different structure. In this paper the structure of the external cuticle is used as a base in the diagnosis of the species. Many species of Sacculina, especially those from tropical regions, possess appendages on this chitinous cuticle, which have in a certain specimen a well-defined form. The size of the appendages may be different in the various regions of the mantle (e. g. those in the neighbourhood of the stalk may be of smaller size than those next to the mantle-opening), but within certain limits the form of these appendages is constant. Already KOSSMANN (1874) made use of the appendages of the external cuticle in the diagnosis of his species, but most authors have not employed this method. Some years ago VAN KAMPEN (1919), however, pointed out that the principles of KOSSMANN\xe2\x80\x99s method could give good results in the taxonomy of this group.

Description: Das Material dieser Untersuchung lieferten die 1920 von Dr. C. J. VAN DER HORST auf Cura\xc3\xa7ao gesammelten Opisthobranchiaten. Hier wird nur die einzige vom ihm gefundene Aeolidiade: Phidiana brevicauda nov. spec. besprochen.\nDr. TH. MORTENSEN stellte mir eine Sammlung Opisthobranchien aus dem zoologischen Museum in Kopenhagen zur Verf\xc3\xbcgung, welche auch dem westindischen Meere entstammten. Darunter befand sich auch nur eine Aeolidiade: Berghia coerulescens Laur.

Description: Die Poriferen-Ausbeute der Cura\xc3\xa7ao-Expedition Herrn Dr. C. J. VAN DER HORSTS verdient nach zweifacher Richtung besonderes Interesse. Einmal gew\xc3\xa4hrt sie in die Schwammfauna des s\xc3\xbcdlichen Teiles des Karaibischen Meeres Einblick, von der bisher erst sehr wenig bekannt ist. Seit der \xe2\x80\x9eArgo\xe2\x80\x9d- Expedition des Jahres 1876 ist die Spongien-Fauna dieses Gebietes nicht mehr untersucht worden. Ueber die Spongien von Cura\xc3\xa7ao lagen bisher in der Literatur \xc3\xbcberhaupt noch keine Angaben vor. Sodann liefern die Sammelergebnisse und Standorts-Aufzeichnungen Dr. VAN DER HORSTS Angaben \xc3\xbcber die \xc3\xb6kologischen Anspr\xc3\xbcche einer Reihe westindischer Schwammarten. Es ist kaum n\xc3\xb6tig zu bemerken, dass hier noch fast v\xc3\xb6llig Neuland vorliegt.\nDie Schwamm-Ausbeute, von der im folgenden das Ergebnis der Bearbeitung der Kalk- und Kieselschw\xc3\xa4mme (ausschliesslich der Hornschw\xc3\xa4mme) mitgeteilt werden soll, wurde von Herrn Dr. VAN DER HORST im April und Mai 1920 an der S\xc3\xbcdk\xc3\xbcste von Cura\xc3\xa7ao gesammelt. Es handelt sich um Litoralf\xc3\xa4nge, die im Wesentlichen in zwei \xc3\xb6kologisch sehr verschiedenartigen K\xc3\xbcstengebieten gemacht wurden: Der Caracas-Bai, einem Gebiet der offenen K\xc3\xbcste mit v\xc3\xb6llig klarem Wasser, teilweise der Brandung ausgesetzt, und \xe2\x80\x9eSpaansch Water\xe2\x80\x9d, einer Lagune, die mit dem offenen Meer nur durch einen schmalen Kanal (\xe2\x80\x9eSpaansche Haven\xe2\x80\x9d) in Verbindung steht, und deren Wasser regelm\xc3\xa4ssig starke Tr\xc3\xbcbungen zeigt. Einige wenige Spongien wurden auch aus dem eben erw\xc3\xa4hnten Meeresarm \xe2\x80\x9eSpaansche Haven\xe2\x80\x9d selbst mitgebracht.

Description: About ten years ago Dr. J. H. VERNHOUT, at that time curator at the National Museum of Natural History at Leiden, gave a commentary on the present state of our knowledge about the \xe2\x80\x9cLand- & Freshwater-Molluscs of the Dutch West-Indian Islands\xe2\x80\x9d (Notes Leyden Museum, Vol. XXXVI, pag. 177\xe2\x80\x94189, 1914).\nAfter summarising carefully the different species of every island in particular, he composed a survey in table-form representing their geographical distribution on other Antilles and on the continent.

Description: In seiner letzten sch\xc3\xb6nen Arbeit (1923), welche in so vielen Hinsichten zu gleichen Resultaten kommt wie die unsrige \xc3\xbcber die Siboga-Epicariden, tritt CHOPRA mit uns in Diskussion \xc3\xbcber einige Punkte, welche wir hier kurz besprechen wollen. Erstens schl\xc3\xa4gt er vor, die von uns \xe2\x80\x9eCoxalplatten\xe2\x80\x9d genannten Bildungen \xe2\x80\x9eanterior lateral plates\xe2\x80\x9d zu nennen, obschon er, weil er unsere Arbeit w\xc3\xa4hrend der Bearbeitung seines Materials noch nicht kannte, f\xc3\xbcr diese \xc3\xbcberall die Worte \xe2\x80\x9ePleura\xe2\x80\x9d und \xe2\x80\x9eEpimera\xe2\x80\x9d benutzt hat, und zwar einfach deshalb, weil diese Worte von andern Forschern am meisten angewandt werden. Wie wir indessen versuchten deutlich auseinanderzusetzen, ist dies nicht erlaubt, denn Pleura und Epimera sind nicht ohne weiteres identisch. Und weil man \xc3\xbcberhaupt nicht wissen kann, welchen morphologischen Wert man den von uns genannten \xe2\x80\x9ehinteren Seitenteilen\xe2\x80\x9d zuschreiben darf, sodass diese nur als topographische Begriffe aufgefasst werden m\xc3\xbcssen, so kann man schwerlich von \xe2\x80\x9evorderen\xe2\x80\x9d und \xe2\x80\x9ehinteren Seitenteilen\xe2\x80\x9d sprechen, wie CHOPRA es tut. Mit dem Begriffe \xe2\x80\x9eCoxalplatten\xe2\x80\x9d aber steht es anders; dass man dieses Wort anwenden darf, ist von uns mehrfach begr\xc3\xbcndet worden.\nEin zweiter Punkt in CHOPRA\xe2\x80\x99s Arbeit ist dieser. Wir haben immer von acht Thoracomeren gesprochen, weil es faktisch diese Zahl gibt. Dass das erste Thoracomer mit dem Cephalon verschmolzen ist, \xc3\xa4ndert diese Sache nat\xc3\xbcrlich in keiner Hinsicht. Dennoch zieht CHOPRA es vor, immer von 7 Thoracomeren zu sprechen, d. h. das erste freie Thoracomer (morphologisch das zweite) nennt er erstes Thoracomer, und zwar nur deshalb, weil alle Forscher dies bis jetzt getan haben. Uns scheint, dass man dem richtigen morphologischen Weg folgen muss, nicht dem unrichtigen, am meisten benutzten Weg. CHOPRA\xe2\x80\x99s Furcht, dass dies zu Verwirrung Anleitung geben k\xc3\xb6nnte, teilen wir keineswegs.

Description: Die von Dr. C. J. VAN DER HORST in Amsterdam im Jahre 1920 von seiner Reise nach Cura\xc3\xa7ao heimgebrachten Gephyreen lieferten das Material f\xc3\xbcr diese Untersuchungen. Nur einige wenige Arbeiten handeln \xc3\xbcber Westindische Gephyreen, unter denen ich in erster Reihe die Arbeit FISCHER\xe2\x80\x99s \xc3\xbcber das von Prof. K\xc3\x9cKENTHAL und Prof. HARTMEYER gesammelte Material hervorheben will. Diese Sammlung enthielt 10 Sipunculiden und 2 Echiuriden, darunter vier neue Arten. Es fanden sich: Siphonosoma occidentale Spengel, Physcosoma antillarum Grube, Ph. dentigerum Selenka und de Man, Ph. nigrescens Keferstein, Ph. pectinatum Keferstein, Ph. varians Keferstein, Aspidosiphon speciosus Gerould, A. spinoso-scutatus Fischer, A. steenstrupi Diesing, Lithacrosiphon k\xc3\xbckenthali Fischer, Thalassema baroni GREEFF und Bonellia thomensis Fischer. In einer anderen Arbeit \xc3\xbcber die Sammlung des Reichsmuseums zu Stockholm, meldet FISCHER noch folgende Arten aus dem betreffenden Gebiet: von C. Description: This collection of Nemerteans is the largest one, known from these regions. It contains only littoral species, most of them being entirely new to science. Only one species is known from other tropical regions, all others seem to be characteristic of the westindian coasts. They are: Ordo HOPLONEMERTINI: Polyschista cura\xc3\xa7aoensis n. g. n. sp. Ordo PALAEONEMERTINI: Carinoma cara\xc3\xafbica n. sp. Ordo HETERONEMERTINI: Baseodiscus curtus (Hubr.). \xe2\x80\x9e unicolor n. sp. HALL, HANKARL, BUSE, JUNGHUHN, WAGNER. Only a little part of these collections remains, owing to the way, in which the above-mentioned collectors used to conserve their materials.

Description: Dr. Kopstein auf Ambon hat dem Leidener Museum eine Anzahl von ihm gesammelter Myriopoden gesandt, deren Bestimmung ich \xc3\xbcbernommen habe. Description: Im Laufe des Sommers und Herbstes 1926 trat Chrysaora hysoscella Esch. 1) am Strande zwischen Katwijk und Noordwijk sehr zahlreich auf.\nObwohl seit langem bekannt ist, dass die Kompassqualle stark variirt in Bezug auf F\xc3\xa4rbung und Zeichnung, liegen doch wenige genauere Beschreibungen und naturgetreue Abbildungen vor. Da es mir nun auf Grund reichlichen Materiales \xe2\x80\x94 so reichlich wie es vielleicht keinem anderen Forscher zuvor zur Verf\xc3\xbcgung stand \xe2\x80\x94 m\xc3\xb6glich war, die Variationen der genannten Form n\xc3\xa4her zu studieren, glaubte ich, die sich mir bietende Gelegenheit nicht ungen\xc3\xbctzt vor\xc3\xbcbergehen lassen zu sollen. Das Material wurde teils lebend im Wasser schwimmend gefischt, teils gleich nach Eintritt der Ebbe an den Strand gesp\xc3\xbclt gesammelt, befindet sich daher meist in bestem Erhaltungszustand. Gesammelt wurde haupts\xc3\xa4chlich auf der Strecke zwischen dem Badestrand von Katwijk und Noordwijk, doch wurde bei g\xc3\xbcnstigem Wetter das Untersuchungsgebiet gegen Scheveningen und Zandvoort zu ausgedehnt. Im ganzen wurden mehrere hundert Exemplare untersucht, von denen sich ein Teil im Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie in Leiden befindet. (Inv. N\xc2\xb0 342/349). Die Untersuchung erschien umso angezeigter, als im Mittelmeer eine nah verwandte Species von Chrysaora, mediterranea Per. und Les. nachgewiesen ist, die von Haeckel auf Grund einer Reihe anatomischer Merkmale als von hysoscella verschieden betrachtet wird, w\xc3\xa4hrend beide von Claus und Mayer als identisch angesehen werden. Vanh\xc3\xb6ffen, die befugte Autorit\xc3\xa4t, ist dieser Frage, ob beide Arten neben einander berechtigt sind oder nicht, im \xe2\x80\x9eNordischen Plankton" (16) aus dem Wege gegangen. Description: INTRODUCTION.\nA complete description of the summer plumage of Tringa canutus never seems to have been given. For this reason alone it might be of some value to describe it in more detail than has been done before.\nThe chief object of the present paper, however, is not the description of the summer dress, but the discussion of a problem connected with it, which is of much more general interest. As the same problem presents itself in the summer plumage of one of the Knot\'s nearest relatives, the plumage of this bird, Tringa crassirostris, will be dealt with in the latter part of the present paper. I have to thank my friend Dr. H. Boschma for his valuable assistance in the preparation of this paper.\nIII. THE PLUMAGE OF TRINGA CANUTUS L. 1. MATERIAL.\nThe material on which this investigation is based consists of about 140 skins in the collections of the Zoological Museum at Copenhagen and of the Museums of Natural History at London and at Leiden; besides, a few skins from the collections of Mr. G. A. Brouwer and myself and that of the Zoological Museum at Amsterdam have been studied, making a total of about 150. Description: De uitgestrekte grindafzettingen der Pleistocene Maas-delta vormen het typische plateaukarakter in het Zuid-Limburgsche landschap. In de dalen, die de latere loop der Maas en haar zijrivieren hierin gesneden hebben, komt in de Zuidelijke helft het Senoon aan den dag. Het grinddek van dit z.g. hoofdterras 1) zakt begrijpelijkerwijze langs de dalhellingen naar beneden en vormt een kapvormige bedekking over het Senoon heen. Waar plaatselijk nog resten van Tertiair (Pliocene-mariene zanden) aanwezig zijn, worden deze zoodoende geheel verborgen en is hun aanwezigheid (in dit gedeelte) alleen uit groeven en boringen bekend. Met uitzondering van enkele diepe groeven op het plateau zelf is dus alleen in de dalen het Senoon ontsloten en wordt daar nog op menige plaats door een dikke laag van jongere grind- en l\xc3\xb6ssafzettingen (midden- en laag terras 1) ) bedekt. Ten Noorden van een strook, die ongeveer van Meerssen naar Kunrade loopt, is dit Senoon tot ongeveer 85 meters verzakt. Deze breukrand is door W. C. Klein in kaart gebracht 2). Van het Senoon komen in Zuid-Limburg de volgende 5 typen voor, die naar plaatsnamen genoemd zijn: Maastrichtsch Tufkrijt (= M) Kunrader formatie (=K) Boven-Senoon Gulpensch krjjt (=G) Groenzand van Vaals (=V) Akensch zand (=A) Onder-Senoon Deze benamingen zullen in het vervolg herhaaldelijk aangeduid worden door de hierboven gegeven afkortingen. Nadat eerst eenige geologische overzichtschetsen gepubliceerd waren (Labry, Binkhorst), verscheen in 1911 een nauwkeurige karteering van het te bespreken gebied, door Uhlenbroek verricht; Maastrichter en Kunrader formatie werden door hem met dezelfde letter en kleur aangegeven, Labry had deze daarentegen van elkaar gescheiden gehouden op zijn geologische schetskaart van Zuid-Limburg.

Het rugschild, breed ovaal, vertoont w\xc3\xa8l schouders, en, evenals het idiosoma, ook een paar schoudervormige uitbuigingen. Beharing. De meeste haren zijn lang (zoo lang als femur I), slap, en in hunne distale helft uiterst dun. De vertikaalharen (fig. 2) zijn korte, krachtige borstels; zij worden geflankeerd door 2 andere, kortere, en mediaad gebogene. Achter deze 4 staan 2 normaal gevormde, naar buiten en naar voren gerichte haren. Daarachter eene dwarsrij van 6. Verder zijn zij in grooter aantal aanwezig, dan bij de europeesche soorten. Description: Toen ik eenigen tijd geleden het gorsen-materiaal uit Nederland in \'s Rijks Museum aanwezig aan een nader onderzoek onderwierp, kwamen mij ook de voorwerpen uit de collectie van Wickevoort Crommelin in handen en trof het mij, dat een drietal voorwerpen foutief gedetermineerd was. De oorspronkelijk door J. P. van Wickevoort Crommelin verrichte determinaties zijn door Dr. F. A. Jentink in 1894 onveranderd overgenomen in \xe2\x80\x9eCatalogue de la collection de feu Mr. J. P. van Wickevoort Crommelin" (Mus. d\'Hist. nat. Pays-Bas, XIV, 1894) en uit de opgaven in deze naamlijst hebben latere schrijvers hunne gegevens geput, zonder het materiaal aan een nieuw onderzoek onderworpen te hebben.\nTwee der voorwerpen behooren tot andere, reeds uit Nederland bekende soorten, terwijl het derde voorwerp tot een soort behoort, die tot heden nog niet uit ons land bekend was. Deze voor de Nederlandsche fauna nieuwe soort is: Emberiza caesia Cretzschmar.\nHet voorwerp, dat tot deze soort behoort, is door van Wickevoort Crommelin gedetermineerd als Emberiza hortulana Linnaeus en door hem vermeld in Ned. Tijdschr. Dierk. I, 1863, p. 225. In de naamlijst van Jentink is het voorwerp op p. 33 vermeld als Emberiza hortulana (n\xc2\xb0 115\xe2\x80\x942).\nHet is een \xe2\x99\x80 en het werd 11 October 1859 op een vinkenbaan bij Overveen (N.-H.) gevangen. Deze in Zuidoost-Europa en Klein-Azi\xc3\xab voorkomende soort is bij uitzondering in Itali\xc3\xab, Zuid-Frankrijk en Oostenrijk waargenomen, ook op Helgoland, waar tusschen de jaren 1848 en 1867 volgens G\xc3\xa4tke ongeveer een twaalftal voorwerpen, hoofdzakelijk uitgekleurde \xe2\x99\x82 \xe2\x99\x82, in de maanden Mei en Juni gevangen werden.

Description: In het brakke water van de Zeeuwsche eilanden komen Bryozo\xc3\xabn voor, die tot het geslacht Membranipora behooren en die zich van de andere soorten van dit geslacht onderscheiden door den vorm van de kolonie. De dieren liggen hier niet, zooals bij de meeste Membranipora\'s, tegen het substraat aan, maar vormen afstaande korsten, die tot groote, samengestelde klompen kunnen uitgroeien en die zich vasthechten aan palen en bruggen. Deze Bryozo\xc3\xabn zijn door een aantal onderzoekers, die ze tot zeer verschillende soorten brachten, in Zeeland en het omgevende gebied gevonden.\nIn \xe2\x80\x9eFlora en Fauna der Zuiderzee" vermeldt Mej. van Benthem Jutting (1922) dezen vorm als Membranipora membranacea (L.) var. erecta Loppens, naar aanleiding van de determinate van overeenkomstige Bryozo\xc3\xabnkolonies door Loppens (1906) als bovengenoemde vari\xc3\xabteit. De door Loppens beschreven kolonies komen inderdaad geheel overeen met den vorm, die in brakke wateren voorkomt als broze kluiten van sintelachtige consistentie, waarvan van der Sleen (1918), die ook Loppens aanhaalt, melding maakt.\nVan het voorkomen van den bewusten vorm was reeds eerder een mededeeling gedaan door Maitland (1896). Hij rekent deze dieren nu tot een vari\xc3\xabteit van Flustra johnstoni, een soort, die volgens Maitland veelvuldig op schelpen en steenen der Zeeuwsche stroomen voorkomt. Deze Flustra johnstoni is nu identiek met een door Johnston (1847) beschreven vorm van Membranipora membranacea (Johnston, I.c., p. 328, Pl. LVI, fig. 7).\nIn hetzelfde werk geeft hij op PI. LVII, fig. 11 en 12 twee vrij nauwkeurige teekeningen, waaruit met zekerheid te concludeeren is, dat deze gemaakt zijn naar objecten, die identiek zijn met de in brakwater voor-

Description: Die folgende Bearbeitung sumatranischer Libellen schliesst sich an zwei fr\xc3\xbchere Aufs\xc3\xa4tze \xc3\xbcber Libellen von Java und von Simalur an, die mir Herr Jacobson anvertraute. Die hier beschriebene wesentlich gr\xc3\xb6ssere Sammlung aus den Jahren 1913\xe2\x80\x9415 kam gegen Ende 1920 in meine H\xc3\xa4nde, sie h\xc3\xa4tte also l\xc3\xa4ngst erledigt sein sollen, und ich bin Hrn.\nJacobson und dem Direktor des Museums in Leiden zu Dank verpflichtet f\xc3\xbcr die Geduld gegen\xc3\xbcber der langen Verz\xc3\xb6gerung, die sich aus pers\xc3\xb6nlichen Gr\xc3\xbcnden ergab 1). Die Sammlung stammt zum weitaus gr\xc3\xb6ssten Teil aus den Padangschen Bovenlanden (P. B.), einem Teil von Sumatra, \xc3\xbcber dessen Odonaten noch sehr wenig berichtet ist. Die genauen Ortsangaben geben zwar dem Verfasser, der das sch\xc3\xb6ne Land nicht kennt, und wohl auch der Mehrzahl seiner Leser, keine Vorstellung vom Charakter der einzelnen Fundorte; genaue Orte und Daten, \xc3\xbcberall so wiedergegeben wie sie der landeskundige Sammler selbst den Objekten beigef\xc3\xbcgt hat, werden aber als Dokumente f\xc3\xbcr Gegenwart und Zukunft trotzdem unentbehrlich gefunden werden.\nNeben zahlreichen, in vielen Schriften zerstreuten einzelnen Notizen \xc3\xbcber sumatranische Odonaten gibt es einige wenige Schriften, die sich mit solchen speziell befassen, von Albarda (10) und Karsch (18) solche kleinern Umfangs, eine vollst\xc3\xa4ndige Zusammenstellung des damals bekannten von E. de Selys-Longchamps (14) und endlich die grosse, monographisch entwickelte Arbeit von Kr\xc3\xbcger (22). Diesen dient der vorliegende Aufsatz zur Erg\xc3\xa4nzung und gewissermassen Modernisierung; um den heute kostbaren Raum zu sparen habe ich mich streng an das Material der bearbeiteten Sammlung gehalten und auf kompilatorische Arbeit

Die Korallen von Nias fanden sieh unter den umfangreichen Aufsammlungen, die der niederl\xc3\xa4ndische Verwaltungsbeambte E. E. W. Gs. Schr\xc3\xb6der auf dieser Insel gemacht und dem Leidener Museum \xc3\xbcberwiesen hat. Die interessanten Fungiden wurden von Herrn J. Bosscha bei M. G. Linggapadang in der Residenz Tegal auf Java gesammelt und dem hiesigen Museum geschenkt. Die Korallen von Borneo schliesslich wurden mir von Herrn Dr. Tobler, Abteilungsvorsteher am naturhistorischen Museum in Basel, zur Bearbeitung anvertraut, sie bilden eine Erg\xc3\xa4nzung zu dem fr\xc3\xbcher von Borneo beschriebenen Korallenmaterial.

Description: Le terrain explor\xc3\xa9 est limit\xc3\xa9 au Nord par une ligne droite, qui va de Ghirla en passant par Marzio \xc3\xa0 Brusimpiano. La limite Est est form\xc3\xa9e par le lago di Lugano et par la vall\xc3\xa9e de Porto Ceresio jusqu\xe2\x80\x99\xc3\xa0 Pogliana. La limite Sud est plus irr\xc3\xa9guli\xc3\xa8re; elle passe au Sud de Pogliana vers le sommet de la Poncione di Ganna et descend apr\xc3\xa8s vers S. Gemolo. La limite Ouest est form\xc3\xa9e par le Valganna. La surface de tout le terrain explor\xc3\xa9 est \xc3\xa0 peu pr\xc3\xa8s de 24,5 km2.\nLes limites Nord et Sud sont form\xc3\xa9es par des s\xc3\xa9diments m\xc3\xa9sozo\xc3\xafques, que je n\xe2\x80\x99ai point examin\xc3\xa9s. Les r\xc3\xa9centes recherches de M. A. Senn nous ont fait conna\xc3\xaetre les formations m\xc3\xa9sozo\xc3\xafques au Sud de mon terrain. Les m\xc3\xaames formations au Nord constituent le sujet d\xe2\x80\x99une \xc3\xa9tude d\xc3\xa9j\xc3\xa0 entreprise.

Description: During an excursion to the South of Switserland, Professor Escher suggested my mapping out the south-western corner of the porphyry district of Lugano. I gladly agreed, for his detailed examination of the Morcote-peninsula had already shown that many interesting facts had escaped unobserved during the small-scale mapping forty years ago; and it was, therefore, highly probable that the projected work would prove fruitful.\nThe necessary field-work was carried out in the spring of the years 1924 and 1925. The collected material I examined in the geological museum of Leiden, where it will remain in future.

Tous ces auteurs se sont occup\xc3\xa9s d\xe2\x80\x99un rapport possible entre le pays des dix milles monticules et le secteur disparu du Galounggoung, mais il ne sont pas d\xe2\x80\x99accord quant \xc3\xa0 la gen\xc3\xa8se de ce curieux pas. Une carte tr\xc3\xa8s pr\xc3\xa9cise, donnant les hauteurs de tous les monticules au-dessus de l\xe2\x80\x99environnement, que j\xe2\x80\x99ai en ma possession, est une des raisons qui m\xe2\x80\x99obligent a revenir sur ce sujet. Peu de temps apr\xc3\xa8s l\xe2\x80\x99\xc3\xa9ruption de 1918 je discutai avec le souschef du Service Topographique des Indes N\xc3\xa9erlandaises, le Colonel A. van Lith, la possibilit\xc3\xa9 d\xe2\x80\x99\xc3\xa9valuer le volume total des nombreux monticules et son rapport \xc3\xa0 celui du secteur manquant. Le colonel van Lith eut alors l\xe2\x80\x99amabilit\xc3\xa9 de faire ex\xc3\xa9cuter les mesures de hauteur n\xc3\xa9cessaires sous la direction du chef de brigade du Service Topographique le capitaine J. Bovendien heb ik de uitgebreide collectie van het Mus\xc3\xa9e Royal d\xe2\x80\x99Histoire Naturelle te Brussel en de origineelen van Goldfuss te Bonn, ter plaatse mogen bestudeeren. Een doorzoeken der Universiteitsverzameling te M\xc3\xbcnchen en der Technische Hoogeschool te Delft leverde mij geen nieuw materiaal meer.\nVan elk der beschreven soorten kon ik minstens \xc3\xa9\xc3\xa9n goed exemplaar samenbrengen in het Rijks-Geologisch Museum te Leiden, alleen Favia Maastrichtensis wordt te Wageningen bewaard.

Description: Herr Dr. C. J. VAN DER HORST im Amsterdam hatte die Freundlichkeit, mir die von ihm im Jahre 1920 bei Cura\xc3\xa7ao gesammelten Polychaeten zur Bearbeitung zu \xc3\xbcbergeben. Ich kann hiermit das Ergebnis dieser Untersuchung vorlegen. Von dem umfangreichen Material hat Dr. R. HORST in Leiden in einer Mitteilung (Bijdragen tot de Dierkunde. Afl. XXII. 5. Dez. 1922) bereits 9 errante Polychaetenformen aufgef\xc3\xbchrt, von denen 2 als Arten nicht n\xc3\xa4her begrenzt sind. Ich habe die von Dr. HORST beschriebenen Arten gleichfalls untersucht und sie unter der von mir f\xc3\xbcr richtig gehaltenen Benennung der Vollst\xc3\xa4ndigkeit halber in meine Arbeit mit aufgenommen. Ferner sind einige von dem ebengenannten Herrn mir zugestellte Polychaeten aus anderen Teilen des Westindien-Meeres von mir mit verwertet worden.\nIn meiner grossen Westindien-Arbeit (an anderer Stelle \xe2\x80\x94 Ueber westindische und einige andere Polychaeten-Typen 1925 \xe2\x80\x94 vorl\xc3\xa4ufig als W. M. 1919 angef\xc3\xbchrt) sind in einem Nachtrage eine Anzahl von Polychaeten von Cura\xc3\xa7ao verzeichnet, die von Prof. E. HENTSCHEL (Zool. Mus. Hamburg) dort gesammelt wurden. Description: A species with the habit of Aristida divaricata H. et B., but welldistinguished by the wanting column and the curious tuberculate lemmas. Closely allied to Aristida gentilis HENR., which differs however in the other position of the glumes and in the smooth lemma. The species resembles in some characters the Aristida Parishii HITCHC., the latter has however a totally different shape of the panicle and the lemma is not tuberculate-hispid, but scabrous only on the upper half. Among duplicates from the U. S. Nat. Herbarium, kindly received from Mrs. A. CHASE, I found a second plant belonging to the species, a plant also collected in Arizona, north slope of Santa Rita Mountains, leg. D. GRIFFITHS no. 7269.

Description: The distinction between the genera of the Talitridae is mainly based \xe2\x80\x94 at least where the Dutch species are concerned \xe2\x80\x94 upon the shape and size of propodite and dactylus of the gnathopods (cf. TESCH: Talorchestia brito etc. in Zoologische Mededeelingen, \'s Rijks Museum van Nat. Hist., Leiden, Dl. II, 1916).\nIntermediate between the genera Talitrus and Orchestia is the remarkable genus Talorchestia, which STEBBING christened with that compound name because the females should be referred to Talitrus, but the males to Orchestia, if we ignored that they belong together. For the second gnathopod of the males carries the huge hand, which distinguishes Orchestia \xe2\x99\x82 \xe2\x99\x82 from Talitrus \xe2\x99\x82 \xe2\x99\x82. The females, however, differ from those of Orchestia in that their 1st gnathopod is not feebly subchelate, but simple as in Talitrus.\nWith the males the species can be easily recognized by the typical Talitrus saltator (Mont.) \xe2\x99\x80, 2nd gnathopod. form of the propodite of the second gnathopod. With the females this is by no means so easy. In Holland two species of Talorchestia occur, viz., Talorchestia deshayesii Aud. and Talorchestia brito Stebb. T. deshayesii Aud. can be readily distinguished by its smaller size and more slender form. Besides the eyes are comparatively smaller.\nThe female Talorchestia brito Stebb., however, resembles Talitrus \xe2\x99\x80 so closely \xe2\x80\x9ethat they are scarcely if at all to be distinguished from each other." W\xc3\xa4kerlin in 1909 under the skin of a Cercopithecus brazzae, which died in the zoological garden of Rotterdam. The monkey originated from the Mid-Congo in Africa. Three of these worms were available for study, the caudal part of the fourth of them being wanting.\nThe examined worms (I, II and III) are 49, 59 and 60 mm. in length.\nThe head-end, which has no papillae, in the 59 mm. long female is slightly swollen; near the end of the oesophagus it measures 720 \xc2\xb5 in breadth, while the rest of the body is 510 \xc2\xb5 broad, except the body-end, which tapers to the tail, where it is 260 \xc2\xb5 broad in the vicinity of the anus. The cuticle is rather smooth, without transverse striations. A small mouth-opening, without lips, gives entrance to a 1 mm. long and 59 to 96 \xc2\xb5 broad oesophagus, which is followed by a very narrow (less than 50 \xc2\xb5 in diameter) intestine. The anus is situated at a distance of 350 p from the end of the tail, which downwards suddenly becomes thinner and ends obtusely.\nThe vulva in the three named worms is situated anteriorly at a distance of 1.6, 2.3 and 1.7 mm. from the anterior end of the body. It is a long and narrow aperture leading into a small chamber, from which a very short, non muscular vagina originates. The trunk of the two uteri is not very long, extending only till some 100 \xc2\xb5 beyond the end of the oesophagus. Description: Bei der Durchsicht mehrerer holl\xc3\xa4ndischen Andrena-Sammlungen fand ich eine Art, welche, soviel ich weiss, bisher noch nicht beschrieben worden ist.\nSie geh\xc3\xb6rt zu der schwierigen Gruppe der A. ovatula K. (afzeliella K.), und ist der A. wilkella K. (xanthura K.) am n\xc3\xa4chsten verwandt. Nach Herrn R. C. L. Perkins, dem ich einige St\xc3\xbccke dieser neuen Art zusand, fehlt sie in England; auf dem Festlande ist sie sicher weiter verbreitet, aber da die Unterscheidung von den Verwandten, besonders bei abgeflogenen St\xc3\xbccken, sehr schwierig ist, hat man sie wohl in der Regel mit A. wilkella K. oder ovatula K. verwechselt.\nDie folgende Beschreibung habe ich aufgestellt nach 5 \xe2\x99\x80\xe2\x99\x80 und 12 \xe2\x99\x82\xe2\x99\x82: Andrena gelriae n. sp. \xe2\x99\x80. Rostrum little longer than broad at its base, reaching almost to the middle of 2nd antennular article; lateral borders diverging somewhat backward, finely serrulate on their distal half, continued on the carapace as sharp ridges that first diverge and then run parallel with the median line. A sharp median carina passes back from the middle of the concave surface of the rostrum and bifurcates on the gastric region, armed just in front of the bifurcation in the male with one, in the other specimen with two minute teeth.
