    Notes: Summary The paper is concerned with a one-dimensional analysis of plane open-channel flow with continuous solidification. The process is of relevance for recent developments in the casting of steel and other metals. The bottom of the channel consists of a rotating casting roll and a horizontal cooling table, where the solidified material is withdrawn with given velocity. The study is restricted to the region downstream of the top of the casting roll. Surface tension is neglected. In the main part of the analysis inviscid fluid flow is considered since the Reynolds number is very large in the applications. It is found that the steady-state solutions are nonunique in a certain parameter range. In addition to a continuous solution, there are two solutions including hydraulic jumps, with one hydraulic jump being located on the casting roll, the other one on the cooling table. Regarding the stability of the non unique solutions, the evolution of disturbances is investigated numerically as an initial-value problem. It is concluded that the hydraulic jump on the cooling table is unstable, while the other discontinuous solution as well as the continuous solution are stable for sufficiently small disturbances. Which stable solution is attained in the steady state, depends on the history of the process. Friction at the liquid/solid interface is taken into account in the last part of the analysis. A constant friction coefficient is assumed. It is found that the history of the process determines the steady-state solution if, and only if, the friction coefficient is sufficiently small. For larger values of the friction coefficient, the steady-state solution is unique and independent of the history of the transient process. Furthermore, for sufficiently large friction coefficients, stable hydraulic jumps are found, in contrast to the inviscid case, also on the cooling table.

    Notes: Abstract Legged-climbing robot is considered. Each foot of the robot has an electromagnet system for robot"s holding on a metal surface. This surface can be both vertical and inclined, including negative slope. Analytical calculation of robot stability under turn over or sliding conditions has been made. Critical slopes have been determined. One of these slopes corresponds to minimal reserve of robot stability towards sliding and another to minimal reserve of robot stability towards turning-over. As total reserve of stability of a robot is always equal to the minimal one of these reserves. Additional support elements of elastic material with high coefficient of friction, along with electromagnet, allows to increase minimal reserve of robot stability towards sliding. The use of such support elements leads to redistributing force of normal support reaction between electromagnet (which surface has low coefficient of friction) and additional support element (which surface has high coefficient of friction). It is just what leads to increasing the total friction force and as a consequence to increasing of minimal reserve of robot stability towards sliding.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, we studied the interface debonding when a crack perpendicularly approaches an interface between two dissimilar elastic materials. An interface toughness law was first defined according to an adhesive model governing the interface fracture. By analysing the interaction between the normally approaching crack and the interface crack and by tacking account of the adhesive forces at ends of the interfacial crack, a model for studying the interface debonding and the debonding stability was established. It is observed that the interface debonding toughness depends strongly on the mixed mode locally produced over the plastic adhesive zone of the interface. Moreover, the interface debonding may be unstable, i.e. the interface debonding length may jump from an initial value to a certain final value under critical remote loading. This jump may be surprisedly important in certain cases. These results agree with the experimental works gathered so far and can be used to explain the mechanism of 'crack arrestor' formed by an interface.

    Notes: Abstract Intracranial saccular aneurysms remain an enigma; it is not known why they form, why they enlarge, or why only some of them rupture. Nonetheless, there is general agreement that mechanics plays an essential role in each aspect of the natural history of these potentially deadly lesions. In this paper, we review recent findings that discount limit point instabilities under quasi-static increases in pressure and resonance under dynamic loading as possible mechanisms of enlargement of saccular aneurysms. Indeed, recent histopathological data suggest that aneurysms enlarge due to a stress-mediated process of growth and remodeling of collagen, the primary load-bearing constituent within the wall. We submit that advanced theoretical, experimental, and numerical studies of this process are essential to further progress in treating this class of pathologies. The purpose of this review is to provide background and direction that encourages elasticians to contribute to this important area of research.

    Notes: Abstract The spatial stability equation of moving jet containing dense suspended solid particles was derived out by means of the continuum phase-coupled model. The stability curves of moving jet for different downstream distances, Reynolds number of flow-field, particle properties and velocities of jetting device are got by the finite difference method based on the asymptotic method and the Eulerian conservative difference scheme. Founded on the analysis of the obtained stability curves it is found that the positive velocity of jetting device widens the unstable frequency range of flow-field but the effect of the negative one is contrary. In addition, particles existing in the flow-field curb the instability of flow-field and the effect enhances with the decrease of Reynolds number of flow-field. These conclusions benefit learning the development of moving two-phase jet.

    Notes: Abstract By adopting the energy method, a new method to calculate the stability of the composite shell of revolution is presented. This method takes the influence of nonlinear prebuckling deformations and stresses on the buckling of the shell into account. The relationships between the prebuckling deformations and strains are calculated by nonlinear Kármán equations. The numerical method is used to calculate the energy of the total system. The nonlinear equations are solved by combining gradient method and amendatory Newton iterative method. The computer program is also developed. An example is given to demonstrate the accuracy of the method presented.

    Notes: Abstract The recursive least square is widely used in parameter identification. But it is easy to bring about the phenomena of parameters burst-off. A convergence analysis of a more stable identification algorithm-recursive damped least square is proposed. This is done by normalizing the measurement vector entering into the identification algorithm. It is shown that the parametric distance converges to a zero mean random variable. It is also shown that under persistent excitation condition, the condition number of the adaptation gain matrix is bounded, and the variance of the parametric distance is bounded.

    Notes: Abstract The governing equation of solid-liquid couple vibration of pipe conveying fluid on the elastic foundation was derived. The critical velocity and complex frequency of pipe conveying fluid on Winkler elastic foundation and two-parameter foundation were calculated by power series method. Compared with pipe without considering elastic foundation, the numerical results show that elastic foundation can increase the critical flow velocity of static instability and dynamic instability of pipe. And the increase of foundation parameters may increase the critical flow velocity of static instability and dynamic instability of pipe, thereby delays the occurrence of divergence and flutter instability of pipe. For higher mass ratio β, in the combination of certain foundation parameters, pipe behaves the phenomenon of restabilization and redivergence after the occurrence of static instability, and then coupled-mode flutter takes place.

    Notes: Abstract This paper studies interactions of pipe and fluid and deals with bifurcations of a cantilevered pipe conveying a steady fluid, clamped at one end and having a nozzle subjected to nonlinear constraints at the free end. Either the nozzle parameter or the flow velocity is taken as a variable parameter. The discrete equations of the system are obtained by the Ritz-Galerkin method. The static stability is studied by the Routh criteria. The method of averaging is employed to examine the analytical results and the chaotic motions. Three critical values are given. The first one makes the system lose the static stability by pitchfork bifurcation. The second one makes the system lose the dynamical stability by Hopf bifurcation. The third one makes the periodic motions of the system lose the stability by doubling-period bifurcation.

    Notes: Abstract The dynamical stability of a homogeneous, simple supported column, subjected to a periodic axial force, is investigated. The viscoelastic material is assumed to obey the Leaderman nonlinear constitutive relation. The equation of motion was derived as a nonlinear integro-partial-differential equation, and was simplified into a nonlinear integro-differential equation by the Galerkin method. The averaging method was employed to carry out the stability analysis. Numerical results are presented to compare with the analytical ones. Numerical results also indicate that chaotic motion appears.

    Notes: Abstract We study thermomechanical deformations of a viscoplastic body deformed in simple shear. The strain gradients are taken as independent kinematic variables and the corresponding higher order stresses are included in the balance laws, and the equation for the yield surface. Three different functional relationships, the power law, and those proposed by Wright and Batra, and Johnson and Cook are used to relate the effective strain rate to the effective stress and temperature. Effects of strain hardening of the material and elastic deformations are neglected. The homogeneous solution of the problem is perturbed and the stability of the problem linear in the perturbation variables is studied. Following Wright and Ockendon's postulate that the wavelength whose initial growth rate is maximum determines the minimum spacing between adjacent shear bands, the shear band spacing is computed. It is found that the minimum shear band spacing is very sensitive to the thermal softening coefficient/exponent, the material characteristic length and the nominal strain-rate. Approximate analytical expressions for the critical wave length for heat conducting nonpolar materials and locally adiabatic deformations of gradient dependent materials are also derived.

    Notes: Summary In this paper, the global behavior of relative equilibrium states of a three-body satellite with flexible connection under the action of the gravitational torque is studied. With geometric method, the conditions of existence of nontrivial solutions to the relative equilibrium equations are determined. By using reduction method and singularity theory, the conditions of occurrence of bifurcation from trivial solutions are derived, which agree with the existence conditions of nontrivial solutions, and the bifurcation is proved to be pitchfork-bifurcation. The Liapunov stability of each equilibrium state is considered, and a stability diagram in terms of system parameters is presented.

    Notes: Abstract An indirect adaptive control approach is developed in this paper for robots with unknown nonlinear dynamics using neural networks (NNs). A key property of the proposed approach is that the actual joint angle values in the control law are replaced by the desired joint angles, angle velocities and accelerators, and the bound on the NN reconstruction errors is assumed to be unknown. Main theoretical results for designing such a neuro-controller are given, and the control performance of the proposed controller is verified with simulation studies.

    Notes: Abstract The hydrodynamic stability of a low speed, plane, non-isothermal laminar wall jet at a constant temperature boundary condition was investigated theoretically and experimentally. The mean velocity and temperature profiles used in the stability analysis were obtained by implementing the Illingworth–Stewartson transformation that allows one to extend the classical Glauert solution to a thermally non-uniform flow. The stability calculations showed that the two unstable eigenmodes coexisting at moderate Reynolds numbers are significantly affected by the heat transfer. Heating is destabilizing the flow while cooling is stabilizing it. However, the large-scale instabilities associated with the inflection point of the velocity profile still amplify in spite of the high level of the stabilizing temperature difference. The calculated stability characteristics of the wall jet with heat transfer were compared with experimental data. The comparison showed excellent agreement for small amplitudes of the imposed perturbations. The agreement is less good for the phase velocities of the sub-harmonic wave and this is attributed to experimental difficulties and to nonlinear effects.

    Notes: Abstract A computation algorithm based on the Poincaré Mapping in combination with Pseudo-Arc Length Continuation Method is presented for calculating the unstable response with saddle-node bifurcation, and the singularity, which occurs using the general continuation method combined with Poincaré Mapping to follow the path, is also proved. A normalization equation can be introduced to avoid the singularity in the process of iteration, and a new iteration algorithm will be presented too. There will be two directions in which the path can be continued at each point, but only one can be used. The method of determining the direction will be presented in the paper. It can be concluded that is method is effective in analysis of nonlinear dynamic system with saddle-node bifurcations.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, the dynamic stability of a viscoelastic circular cylindrical shell subject to an axial compressive force and a uniformly distributed radial compressive load is discussed. By using the Laplace transformation, stability conditions of viscoelastic shell under constant loads are yielded. By using synthetically the classical dynamic methods, the various dynamical properties for the dynamical system defined by the viscoelastic shell and the effect of parameters on the stability of structure are obtained.

    Notes: Abstract Nonlinear three-dimensional problems of dynamic deformation, buckling, and posteritical behavior of composite shell structures under pulsed loads are analyzed. The structure is assumed to be made of rigidly joined plates and shells of revolution along the lines coinciding with the coordinate directions of the joined elements. Individual structural elements can be made of both composite and conventional isotropic materials. The kinematic model of deformation of the structural elements is based on Timoshenko-type hypotheses. This approach is oriented to the calculation of nonstationary deformation processes in composite structures under small deformations but large displacements and rotation angles, and is implemented in the context of a simplified version of the geometrically nonlinear theory of shells. The physical relations in the composite structural elements are based on the theory of effective moduli for individual layers or for the package as a whole, whereas in the metallic elements this is done in the framework of the theory of plastic flow. The equations of motion of a composite shell structure are derived based on the principle of virtual displacements with some additional conditions allowing for the joint operation of structural elements. To solve the initial boundary-value problem formulated, an efficient numerical method is developed based on the finite-difference discretization of variational equations of motion in space variables and an explicit second-order time-integration scheme. The permissible time-integration step is determined using Neumann's spectral criterion. The above method is especially efficient in calculating thin-walled shells, as well as in the case of local loads acting on the structural element, when the discretization grid has to be condensed in the zones of rapidly changing solutions in space variables. The results of analyzing the nonstationary deformation processes and critical loads are presented for composite and isotropic cylindrical shells reinforced with a set of discrete ribs in the case of pulsed axial compression and external pressure.

    Notes: Abstract Based on the linear analysis of stability, a dispersion equation is deduced which delineates the evolution of a general 3-dimensional disturbance on the free surface of an incompressible viscous liquid jet injected into a gas with swirl. Here, the dimensionless parameterJ e is again introduced, in the meantime, another dimensionless parameterE called as circulation is also introduced to represent the relative swirling intensity. With respect to the spatial growing disturbance mode, the numerical results obtained from solving the dispersion equation reveal the following facts. First, at the same value ofE, in pace with the changing ofJ e , the variation of disturbance and the critical disturbance mode still keep the same characters. Second, the present results are the same as that of S.P. Lin whenJ e 〉1; but in the range ofJ e 〈1, it's no more the case, the swirl decreases the axisymmetric disturbance, yet increases the asymmetric disturbance, furthermore the swirl may make the character of the most unstable disturbance mode changed (axisymmetric or asymmetric); the above action of the swirl becomes much stronger whenJ e ≪1.

    Notes: Abstract The general approach for solving the nonlinear equations is linearizing the equations and forming various iterative procedures, then executing the numerical simulation. For the strongly nonlinear problems, the solution obtained in the iterative process is always difficult, even divergent due to the numerical instability. It can not fulfill the engineering requirements. Newton's method and its variants can not settle this problem. As a result, the application of numerical simulation for the strongly nonlinear problems is limited. An auto-adjustable damping method has been presented in this paper. This is a further improvement of Newton's method with damping factor. A set of vector of damping factor is introduced. This set of vector can be adjusted continuously during the iterative process in accordance with the judgement and adjustment. An effective convergence coefficient and quichening coefficient are employed to relax the restricted requirements for the initial values and to shorten the iterative process. Then, the numerical stability will be ensured for the solution of complicated strongly nonlinear equations. Using this method, some complicated strongly nonlinear heat transfer problems in airplanes and aeroengines have been numerically simulated successfully. It can be used for the numerical simulation of strongly nonlinear problems in engineering such as nonlinear hydrodynamics and aerodynamics, heat transfer and structural dynamic response etc.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, the disturbances to a uniformly rotating ideal fluid with a sphere moving steadily along the axis of rotation are analysed by using linearization theory, the equations of disturbance, pressure and disturbance stream function governing the stability of motion are derived based on the assumption that the flow is rotational symmetric. The equation of disturbance stream function is analysed with the method of normal modes, and the constraints on wave number and wave velocity of the nontrivial neutral disturbances are established and the exact expression of the neutral disturbances are obtained.     Notes: Conceived as a potential alternative to the methods usually employed for evaluating the stability of jointed rock masses, the homogenization approach developed in this paper stems from the intuitive idea that, from a macroscopic point of view, a rock mass intersected by a regular network of joint surfaces may be perceived as a homogeneous continuum. The failure criterion of such an equivalent medium is theoretically determined from the knowledge of the failure conditions of the individual constituents, namely the intact rock matrix and joint interfaces. Owing to the existence of privileged material directions associated with the joint orientation distribution, this criterion turns out to be of the anisotropic frictional type, as shown by the closed-form expression obtained in the particular case of two mutually orthogonal joint sets. This criterion is then applied to the investigation of two illustrative engineering problems: the calculation of the load-bearing capacity of a shallow foundation on a jointed rock half-space and the stability analysis of an excavation. Both problems are handled by means of the kinematic method of yield design, making use of the previously determined macroscopic failure condition. The upper bound estimates thus derived appear to be significantly better than those obtained from a direct analysis in which the intact rock matrix and joints are considered separately. In spite of some limitations regarding its range of applicability, which are underlined throughout the paper, the homogenization approach may constitute an appropriate general framework for the design of densely jointed rock structures. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: Abstract  The characteristics of poly(oxyethylene) hydrogenated caster oil ether (HCO-10) vesicles were studied for the standpoints of encapsulation efficiency, stability, solubilization and permeability or barrier efficiency. The vesicles of 5% HCO-10 had 6.24% of calcein-entrapment efficiency and 240 nm of mean diameter. The stability of HCO-10 vesicle suspensions was dependent on their concentrations. In the vesicle suspensions of 10% HCO-10 or more, both the size of the vesicles and the fluidity of the suspensions obviously varied with incubation time, indicating that a flocculation occurred; whereas, the vesicle suspension of 5% HCO-10 was relatively stable. The solubilization process of HCO-10 vesicles by SDS was similar to that of EggPC liposomes. The rate constants for permeation of Cl ion and calcein were 2.46×10-3 s-1 and 5.79×10-5 s-1, respectively, suggesting that HCO-10 vesicles possessed some barrier potential for Cl ion and calcein although they were smaller than those of liposomes. Furthermore, the efflux of the solute such as calcein from HCO-10 vesicles was maximum at 37 °C, where the vesicle membrane was presumably destabilized by dehydration of EOs in HCO-10 molecules.

The stability condition of a periodic impacting motion is given by analyzing the propagation of small, arbitrary perturbation from that motion.     Notes: Abstract The effect of urea on the stability of α-haematite hydrosols in the presence of various monovalent ions was studied on each side of the pzc (pH 8.2) by measurements of the critical coagulation concentration (CCC) of the hydrosol. It was observed that for pHs lower than the pzc, the effect of urea depends strongly on the nature of coagulating ion and on the pH:The CCC values of IO 3 − increases with urea concentrations but those of ClO 4 − and Cl− decreases. For pHs higher than the pzc, an inversion of the cationic adsorption sequence was observed. This behavior is in a good agreement with the well-known action of urea on the structure of water and also with the general property of the α-haematite water interface.

    Notes: Summary Stability of a heavy rotating rod with a variable cross section is studied by energy method. Bifurcation points for the system of equilibrium equations are analyzed. It is shown that for the case when the rotation speed exceeds the critical one, the trivial solution ceases to be the minimizer of the potential energy, so that rod loses stability, according to the energy criteria. Also, a new estimate of the maximal rod deflection in the post-critical state is obtained.

    Notes: Abstract The paper presents an approach to sequence planning consisting in determining assembly sequences defined in terms of mating and non-mating operations and based on a dynamic expansion of the assembly tree obtained using a knowledge base management system. The planner considers the case of a single-robot assembly workcell. The use of stability and the detailed definition of sequences also by means of several non-mating operations are shown to be powerful instruments in the control of the tree expansion. Forward assembly planning has been chosen, in order to minimize the number of stability checks. Backtracking is avoided by combining precedence relations and stability analysis. Hard and soft constrains are introduced to drive the tree expansion. Hard constraints are precedence relations and stability analysis. All operations are associated to costs, which are used as soft constraints. The operation based approach enables one to manage even non-mating operations and to easily overcome the linearity constraint. Costs enable the planner to manage the association among tools and components. The first section of the paper concerns Stability Analysis that is subdivided into Static and Dynamic Stability Analysis. The former is mainly involved in analyzing gravity effects; the latter is mainly involved in evaluate inertia effects due to manipulation. Stability Analysis is implemented in a simplified form. Fundamental assumptions are: no rotational equilibrium condition is considered; for each reaction force only direction and versus, but not magnitude, are considered; friction is neglected. The second section discusses the structure of the planner and its implementation. The planner is a rule based system. Forward chaining and hypothetical reasoning are the inference strategies used. The knowledge base and the data base of the system are presented and the advantages obtained using a rule based system are discussed. The third section shows two planning examples, showing the performance of the system in a simple case and in an industrial test case, the assembly of a microwave branching filter composed of 26 components.

    Notes: Abstract The problem of instability of a hyperelastic, thick-walled cylindrical tube was first studied by Wilkes [1] in 1955. The solution was formulated within the framework of the theory of small deformations superimposed on large homogeneous deformations for the general class of incompressible, isotropic materials; and results for axially symmetrical buckling were obtained for the neo-Hookean material. The solution involves a certain quadratic equation whose characteristic roots depend on the material response functions. For the neo-Hookean material these roots always are positive. In fact, here we show for the more general Mooney–Rivlin material that these roots always are positive, provided the empirical inequalities hold. In a recent study [2] of this problem for a class of internally constrained compressible materials, it is observed that these characteristic roots may be real-valued, pure imaginary, or complex-valued. The similarity of the analytical structure of the two problems, however, is most striking; and this similarity leads one to question possible complex-valued solutions for the incompressible case. Some remarks on this issue will be presented and some new results will be reported, including additional results for both the neo-Hookean and Mooney–Rivlin materials.

    Notes: Incomplete LU factorizations are among the most effective preconditioners for solving general large, sparse linear systems arising from practical engineering problems. This paper shows how an ILU factorization may be easily computed in sparse skyline storage format, as opposed to traditional row-by-row schemes. This organization of the factorization has many advantages, including its amenability when the original matrix is in skyline format, the ability to dynamically monitor the stability of the factorization and the fact that factorizations may be produced with symmetric structure. Numerical results are presented for Galerkin finite element matrices arising from the standard square lid-driven cavity problem. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: A multidomain method for the solution of elliptic CFD problems with an ADI scheme is described. Two methods of treatment of internal boundary conditions for ADI functions are discussed, namely an explicit and a semi-implicit method. Stability conditions for the proposed methods are derived theoretically. The semi-implicit scheme is more stable than the explicit scheme, leading to improved numerical efficiency for multidomain computations. Numerical computations for a linear convection-diffusion equation, for buoyancy-driven recirculating flow in a square cavity and for turbulent flow in a square duct confirmed the theoretical results. Computer runs of the multidomain code in a distributed memory multiprocessor system were successful and efficient and produced reliable results. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: Abstract X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements show that exposure of an Fe−Cr−Ni alloy to H2S and O2 under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions leads to the thermal instability of the Fe oxide without affecting the Cr oxide. An atomically clean metal surface, predominantly Fe in composition and free of internal sulfur, was exposed to H2S under controlled conditions in order to form a sulfided monolayer. Adsorbed S inhibited surface oxidation at temperatures between 325 K and 825 K. The presence of adsorbed S did not, however, inhibit the surface segregation of Cr for temperatures 〉600 K, compared to a S-free sample. Upon annealing of a sulfided sample to 900 K in UHV, the Fe oxide largely disappears, while no change is observed in the Cr oxide. The S-free sample shows no significant change in either the Fe or Cr oxides upon annealing. The results presented in this paper show that sulfidation of an alloy surface prior to oxidation and surface segregation can adversely affect the thermal stability of the Fe oxide without affecting the Cr oxide overlayer resulting from surface segregation and preferential oxidation.

    Notes: Abstract Application of the muramyldipeptide derivative B30-MDP to liposomal vaccines will aid in the development of improved high immunogenicity vaccines. To give full play to the effectiveness of B30-MDP as a liposomal vaccine, it is important to evaluate the effect of cholesterol, dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) or distearoylphosphatidylcholine (DSPC) incorporation on the chemical stability of B30-MDP and physicochemical properties of B30-MDP/lipid mixed vesicles from the view point of pharmaceutics. The observed degradation rate constants of B30-MDP by hydrolysis in B30-MDP/cholesterol mixed vesicles were increased with increasing concentration of cholesterol, however, those in B30-MDP/DMPC and B30-MDP/DSPC mixed vesicles were unchanged with increasing concentration of DMPC and DSPC. The degradation behavior of B30-MDP was then compared with physicochemical properties of B30-MDP/lipid mixed vesicles, such as membrane fluidity and particle size. It was apparent that the degradation of B30-MDP in B30-MDP/cholesterol mixed vesicles was influenced by the particle size, but not by the fluidity of the membranes. In the case of B30-MDP/phospholipid mixed vesicles, MDP/phospholipid mixed vesicles, the degradation of B30-MDP was not influenced by either the membranes' fluidity or the particle size of the mixed vesicles. It is considered that the degradation of B30-MDP in the mixed vesicles is dependent on the membrane state, and the addition of cholesterol to B30-MDP vesicle inhibits the mutual interaction of MDP regions, whereas the addition of phospholipids hardly influences the mutual interaction of MDP regions, possibly owing to phase separation between B30-MDP and phospholipids.

    Notes: Abstract In an attempt to increase the range of analytical techniques able to monitor ultimate degradation stages of degradable, biodegradable, and bioresorbable polymers, capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) was used to analyze tentatively oligomers formed during thermal condensation of lactic, glycolic, anddl-3-hydroxybutyric acids. The influence of the buffer and of capillary coating are discussed in terms of electroosmotic flow. Typical analyses were first performed using a 0.1M borate buffer (pH 8.9) with anodic injection. In the case of lactic acid, seven peaks were well separated, while only three peaks were observed for glycolic acid. A more complex situation was found fordl-3-hydroxybutyric acid oligomers. The first five peaks were split. The major component of each doublet was attributed to hydroxy-terminated oligomers, whereas the satellite peaks were assigned to oligomers bearing a C=C double bond at the noncarboxylic terminus. CZE of pH-sensitive lactic acid oligomers was also performed in 0.05M phosphate buffer (pH 6.8) with cathodic injection after physical coating of the fused-silica capillary with DEAE-Dextran. The buffer-soluble fraction present in lactic acid oligomers was extracted from a dichloromethane solution. Extracts issued from different batches of lactic acid condensates gave a constant water-solubility pattern whose cutoff was at the level of the decamer. CZE was also used to monitor thein vitro aging of aqueous solutions of these water-soluble oligomers. The lactyllactic acid dimer appeared more stable than higher oligomers, thus showing that ultimate stages of the degradation did not proceed at random. These physicochemical characteristics were used to complement the degradation pathway based on diffusion of oligomers duringin vitro aging of large size lactic acid plates made by compression molding. CZE data showed that lactic acid was the only component which was released in the aqueous medium during degradation.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper we address the problems related to critical misfit and thickness in epilayer-substrate combinations of comparable bond strengths; specifically the case in which a pseudomorphic monolayer (ML) is stable and the critical thickness is about three MLs or less. Of particular interest are the average energies related to misfit strain f KS and misfit dislocations (MDs)—in the latter case the individual contributions of the oscillatory strains 〈V〉 and the epilayer-substrate disregistry 〈V〉MD. The individual energies are of interest because they may play different roles in the realization of specific growth modes. The analytical approach involves the following assumptions: (a) a rigid substrate as source of a periodic epilayer atom-substrate interaction potential which we model in terms of a low order truncated Fourier series; and (b) an epilayer which (i) deforms harmonically with zero strain gradient normal to the film plane, (ii) grows in Kurdjumov-Sachs (KS) orientation due to small misfit. f KS and in the layer-by-layer growth mode. Arguments are presented claiming that this interfacial situation may be approximated by a one-dimensional problem in which epilayer stiffness constants and equilibrium structure, as well as epilayer-substrate interaction depend on epilayer thickness; which poses a complex problem. An approximate solution could be obtained by assuming these quantities to be independent of thickness and proximities of the vacuum and the substrate. The most prominent conclusions are that the equilibrium density of MDs and hence the transition from misfit accommodation by MS to one containing MDs is a catastrophic process and that sustained minimum energy may require the overcoming of an energy barrier. While elementary implementation of the results to equilibrium growth mode theory suggests—independently of the catastrophic nature—that energetically favored misfit strain relief by misfit dislocations may, or may not, effect a transition to Stranski-Krastanov growth, a crude numerical calculation favors the transition. A proper implementation of the results require extensive numerical calculations and is planned for the near future.

The stability conclusions under different direction of vortex are drawn out.

    Notes: Abstract Bifurcation problems of a spring-mass system vibrating against an infinite large plane are studied in this paper. It is shown that there exist phenomena of codimension two bifurcations when the ratios of frequencies are in the neigborhood of the same special values and the coefficient of restitution approach unity. By theory of normal forms, we reduce Poincare maps to normal forms, and find flip bifurcations, Hopf bifurcations of fixed points and that of period two points. The theoretical solutions are verified by numerical computations.

    Notes: Abstract Based on the linear analysis of stability, a dispersion equation is deduced which delineates the evolution of a general 3-dimensional disturbance on the free surface of an incompressible viscous liquid jet. With respect to the spatial growing disturbance mode, the numerical results obtained from the solution of the dispersion equation reveal that a dimensionless parameterJ e exists. AsJ e〉1, the axisymmetric disturbance mode is most unstable; and whenJ e〈1, the asymmetric disturbances come into being, their growth rate increases with the decrease, ofJ e, till one of them becomes the most unstable disturbance. The breakup of a low-speed liquid jet results from the developing of axisymmetric disturbances, whose instability is produced by the surface tension; while the atomization of a high-speed liquid jet is brought about by the evolution of nonaxisymmetric disturbance, whose instability is caused by the aerodynamic force on the interface between the jet and the ambient gas.

    Notes: Abstract Fe-PILCs were treated in a mild acid and basic environment (low concentrated acids and bases at ambient temperatures) for two days to evaluate their influence on the structure and porosity. All modified Fe-PILCs were analyzed for different parameters such as surface area, micropore volume, interlayer distance and total amount of Fe2O3. Acid treatment has a positive influence on the surface area and micropore volume. However, a complete destruction of the structure was noticed after modification with solutions of equilibrium pH(pHeq) below 1.82. This collapse is accompanied by a serious loss of Fe2O3 as observed from EPMA-analysis. Besides an increased surface area and micropore volume, base modified Fe-PILCs show, independent of the pHeq used, XRD-peaks, indicating no structural breakdown during the treatment. This paper proposes on a model to explain the behaviour of Fe-PILCs in mild acid and basic environment.

    Notes: A theoretical study of plane shear waves in a fully saturated granular medium is presented using a hypoplastic constitutive relation for the solid constituent. Dynamic equations for small disturbances about an initial state are derived and analysed with constitutive parameters for Karlsruhe sand. Permanent changes in stresses during the propagation of waves are shown to result in the liquefaction of the material. As follows from the equations, in the general case the propagation is characterized by two different wave speeds, corresponding to the plus or minus sign of the velocity gradient, i.e. to different directions of an instantaneous shear. The values of the wave speeds depend on the initial state (stresses and void ratio) as well as on the orientation of the wave with respect to the principal stresses of the initial stress tensor. If the granular material is loose enough and the initial stress state differs from the hydrostatic one, it is possible that one of the wave speeds becomes imaginary, i.e. physically does not exist. This case means a loss of stability of the body in the sense that a small boundary disturbance results in a flow of the whole mass which cannot be prevented by a boundary control. Such a solution can be viewed as a model of spontaneous liquefaction. The condition obtained for stability is compared with the one derived from the analysis of the second-order work.

    Notes: An analysis of stability of rectangular-like galleries or caverns is developed from the point of view of creep, creep failure and short-time failure. The initial stress distribution around the cavern just after excavation is obtained with an exact elastic solution. Further this solution is used in conjunction with an elastic/viscoplastic non-associated constitutive equation to determine first the domains around the excavation where the rock becomes dilatant, where compressible, and where a short-time failure is expected. This constitutive equation is further used to determine the creep of the rock around the opening, and where and when a creep failure is to be expected due to excessive dilatancy. It is shown that the location of the incipient creep failure depends on the stress concentration due to the presence of the ‘corners’, on the possible elongated shape of the cavern, and also to the stress concentration induced by the far field stresses. This location also depends on the internal pressure and on depth, and it can be determined quite accurately. Thus the location of incipient creep damage depends on a variety of parameters and the determination of this exact location is very important, and is described in this paper. It is shown that the evolutive damage is spreading mainly in the direction of minimum far field stresses or in the direction of greater elongation of the cross-section. The same constitutive equation allows us to determine the creep convergence (or divergence) of the walls, where this creep is quite fast and when for the first time the incipient creep failure due to dilatancy is to be expected. This timing depends primarily on the magnitude of octahedral shear stress. The time up to creep failure is shorter if this stress is larger (close to the short-term failure value), but tends towards infinity if the stress is relatively small (close but still above the compressibility/dilatancy boundary). Once the various failure modes are well understood the orientation and magnitude of far field stresses can be determined by this analysis if not known a priori. Also, once the location of losing the stability and that of the volume of rock involved in fast creep and creep failure are determined, one can suggest the optimal design of a support. The way in which the stress variation is influencing the above mentioned problem will be discussed in forthcoming papers. While the authors recognize the importance of the pre-existing rock discontinuities in the overall cavern stability, it was thought that a better understanding of this stability starts from analyzing a rock without such pre-existing discontinuities. The examples are given for rock salt.

    Notes: Abstract The thermal oxidative stability of various formulations based on emulsion-grade ABS was studied by the chemiluminescence technique. Emulsion products were found to be essentially less stable than ionic mass polymerization resins. Among the antioxidants studied, Santonox R is clearly more efficient than Irganox 1076 and Irganox 3114, and its superiority is reflected primarily in improved induction period values. The introduction of Tinuvin 770 and Tinuvin 328 UV stabilizers into emulsion resins does not change the durability of the products. In mixtures where both Irganox 1076 and UV stabilizers are present, a certain antagonistic effect was noted at high UV stabilizer concentrations.

    Notes: Unsteady two-dimensional thermal analysis has been performed on PEEK/AS-4 fiber thermoplastic composites. To calculate the crystallinity of the composite, a spherulite growth model was applied. A numerical analysis was carried out with variations in mold cooling rate, the prepreg lay-up, and the composite geometry. The effect of geometry and the cooling rate is significant in the temperature profiles. The degree of crystallinity varies with the cooling rate, but the gradient of crystallinity is small, with the exception of complex geometries at fast cooling rates. The results of numerical calculations are in excellent agreement with the experiments and offer validation of the numerical formulation.

    Notes: The Properties of three kinds of carbon fibers, which were pre-carbonized at 500, 550, and 600°C during two-stage continuous carbonization, were measured after being air oxidized for periods of 1 to 6 min at 550°C. The effects of precarbonization temperatures on mechanical properties, density, morphology, elemental compositions, and microstructure of the carbon fibers are discussed. The pre-carbonization process affected strongly the surface properties and mechanical properties of the final carbon fibers, as measured after air oxidation. Carbon fibers measured one to six min after air oxidation showed a different oxidation behavior in the surface morphology for each pre-carbonization temperature. Optimum conditions not only improved the tensile strength and modulus by over 50%, but also increased the density and oxygen content.

    Notes: The surface composition and energy of carbon fiber has been carefully analyzed and quantified. Untreated, AU, surface-treated, AS, and heat-treated AHT fibers were all studied. AS fiber was surface-treated by an electrolytic oxidation process. AHT fiber was heat-treated at elevated high temperatures under vacuum. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS or ESCA) was used to investigate the surface elemental concentration of carbon fibers. The corresponding surface free energies of these fibers were calculated from the contact angles measured by a dynamic contact angle analyzer. Results showed a strong correlation between the surface treatment and heat-treatment history and the surface chemistry of carbon fibers. After oxidation treatment, the surface free energy was increased by adding functional group elements (oxygen and nitrogen). However, these added elements could be removed by high temperature treatment under vacuum. The diffusion of O, N, and Na was discussed. The correlation between oxygen and nitrogen concentration and carbon fiber surface free energy has been plotted. These fibers would be used to quantify the relationship between carbon fiber surface free energy and the interfacial shear strength of the fiber-polymer interface.

    Notes: Sizings significantly affect the processing and final performance characteristics of resin transfer molded (RTM) parts. Manufacturers often use sizings to enhance compatability between the resin and reinforcement and to assist processing. In particular, such coatings can affect the microscopic flow characteristics of resins during the infusion stages of the RTM process. To understand the mechanisms by which sizings affect preform wet-out and the extent of such effects, the influence of fiber sizings and fiber loadings on the flow of a vinyl-ester resin system, through axially aligned carbon fibers, have been measured. The results and analysis of the experiments reported herein form the basis for a phenomenological model that describes the effect of sizings on micro-flow in RTM. Furthermore, the work provides insight into the relationships among micro-flow, macro-flow, and preform infiltration. It is seen that sizings dramatically influence micro-impregnation and, for the flow configuration studied, radial micro-flow into fiber bundles was the rate limiting process for complete fiber bundle infusion.

    Notes: A sequential design optimization scheme based on artificial neural networks (ANN) is proposed. It is a combination of an ANN model and a nonlinear programming algorithm. The proposed scheme is implemented with network training, optimization, and sheet molding compound (SMC) process simulation in a closed loop. A “cyclic coordinate search” technique is employed to initiate the optimization process, to collect training data for the neural network model, and to perform a preliminary design sensitivity analysis. Emphasis is placed on the development of an integrated, automatic optimization-simulation design tool that does not rely on the designer's experience and interpretation. Testing results based on the design of heating channels in an SMC compression molding tool show that the optimal design can be achieved with fewer data points than other methods, such as factorial design.     Notes: A three-dimensionally woven fabric is proposed as a standard reference material for permeability characterization. The 3-D woven fabric requires care in cutting and handling, although it is more robust than 2-D woven or braided fabrics. If prepared carefully, the permeability of the 3-D woven fabric can be measured reproducibly within 15% in either radial flow or saturated 1-D flow geometries. The material was characterized for permeability in radial, unsaturated and saturated 1-D, and through-thickness flow geometries. The transient results demonstrated the importance of structural heterogeneity on the unsaturated flow behavior, and agree qualitatively with a simplistic model of flow in heterogeneous unsaturated porous media. The effects of heterogeneity were manifested in the proposed SRM by an increasing trend in the “unsaturated permeability.” Experiments were also conducted with a random mat that displayed transient flows dominated by wicking. The effects of wicking on the macroscopic flow behavior were manifested by transients in the “unsaturated permeability” in which a decreasing trend was observed.

    Notes: This paper is concerned with the use of two thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers (TLCPs), HX1000 and Vectra B950, to reinforce a thermoplastic matrix of polypropylene (PP). The goal was to pregenerate the optimal TLCP reinforcement in PP and then process the material at a lower temperature than the melting point of the TLCP to form a composite structure. Specifically, strands of the blend were produced using a dual extrusion process, which resulted in the formation of axially continuous TLCP fibrils within the PP matrix. It was found that the mechanical properties of the strands were greatly improved by increased draw ratio and that optimal reinforcement, as predicted by the rule of mixtures, could be achieved. Initial studies indicated that injection molding and sheet extrusion of the pelletized strands caused the TLCP phase to agglomerate and deform, which resulted in a reduction of the mechanical property enhancement. However, the TLCP fibrillar morphology in the pregenerated strands was maintained during compression molding, which resulted in uniaxial composites with properties equal to or greater than properties of the strands. In addition, composites were made using compression molding in which strands were randomly oriented prior to consolidation to show the limits of properties possible in composites produced from the pregenerated strands. It was found that this process could be used to produce composites in which the mechanical properties were isotropic in the plane of the sample and approached the properly limits predicted by composite theory. Additionally, it was found that many of the mechanical properties of the VB/PP materials were greatly enhanced by the addition of a maleated PP throughout the composite forming process.

    Notes: Gas permeation and creep deformation of a commercial prepreg, which exhibits viscoelastic characteristics, were investigated as a function of time, temperature, and consolidation pressure. Experiments using a prepreg stack demonstrated that the material exhibited a linear viscoelastic bulk deformation under vacuum/autoclave pressure and furthermore, the in-plane gas flow exhibited non-Darcian flow behavior with a permeation hysteresis. This behavior was viewed and analyzed by two viscoelastic relaxation processes: (1) bulk dimensional relaxation, and (2) microscopic pore structure rearrangement. A modified standard linear solid (SLS) viscoelastic model was used to interpret the creep compliance and dynamic gas permeability utilizing two independent relaxation parameters. By visual investigation of pore sizes and their distribution, air permeation was found to take place mostly through the interlaminar porosity network for the prepreg system examined.

    Notes: The aim of this study is to determine the fracture toughness of phenolic resin and its composite. Fracture tests on phenolic resin resulted in a fracture toughness close to values quoted for unmodified epoxy resins. Composite specimens of glass fiber reinforced phenolic were also tested. The interlaminar fracture toughness in both mode I and mode II failures was determined. The mode I initiation values were lower than the neat resin's toughness. Mode I propagation values were strongly influenced by fiber bridging. The mechanism of fiber bridging was found to be sensitive to specimen dimensions. The effect of fiber bridging on the mode I analysis is discussed. Fiber bridging was also evident in mode II failures. Two different geometries were used for the mode II tests (end loaded split and end notched flexure); a correlation between the results from the two geometries is made.

    Notes: The fracture performances of three short glass fiber-reinforced polymer composite systems, PET with 30 wt% glass, nylon 6/6 with 33% glass fibers, and a nylon 6 and 6/6 copolymer with 33% glass, have been characterized using both standard mechanical characterization and fracture mechanics. These results have been compared to fracture tests of an experimental chair base. None of the characterizing techniques was successful in predicting the chair base fracture performances of the materials when the tests were conducted on standard 3-mm-thick test specimens. When larger specimens with comparable morphologies to the chair base were tested, the fracture mechanics tests compared favorably to the chair base fracture tests while the tensile test results were inconsistent in their predictive ability. The findings emphasize the importance of testing laboratory specimens that are similar in morphology to the final part and suggest that fracture mechanics methodologies can be used in materials selection of glass reinforced systems for structural applications. However, for quantitative design, it is necessary to address issues regarding the nature of the inherent flaw in the finished parts.

    Notes: The response of the aramid reinforced aluminum-epoxy-laminate to uniaxial and biaxial fatigue loading has been investigated. The fracture process in the laminates propagates mainly in the form of cracks in aluminum layers, delaminations between the resin-rich and fiber-rich prepreg layers, splitting in prepreg layers and fiber fracture. Ultrasonic microscopy has been used to evaluate the shape and size of the damage zone. The ultrasonic images have been calibrated by means of SEM and optical microscopy of the laminates with sequential removal of the layers. Microscopic examination reveals a direct correlation between delamination, fiber fracture, and fatigue crack growth in the aluminum layer. The results of this investigation strongly suggest that the laminate resistance to tension-tension biaxial fatigue is superior to that under uniaxial loading conditions.

    Notes: A finite element simulation is proposed for the shaping of glass fiber fabric. The overall mechanical behavior of the fabric is obtained by combining the tensile behavior of a single thread and the current position of threads in the fabric. The constitutive model for a single thread in tension is based on a statistical approach and is identified using tensile tests. Shear and tensile tests have been carried out on fabric specimens to demonstrate that the behavior of the fabric mainly results from the contribution of each thread, the sliding between fiber threads having a small effect on the energy for the deformation mechanism of these fabrics. A numerical model for the shaping process is obtained based on a finite element approach using three- and four-node membrane shell elements. The formulation accounts for the large displacements and large strains involved in the process as well as the mechanical behavior. A drawing simulation is presented in the case of an hemispherical punch. The comparison with experimental results obtained in this case shows good agreement.

    Notes: A simple lab-scale weaving method was used to produce multidirectional fiber preforms to improve the delamination resistance and damage tolerance of composites. Mechanical properties measured in this study included short-beam shear strength and damage tolerance of 2-D and 3-D woven composites. The constituents of fiber and matrix in these composites are Kevlar-29 (Du Pont) and Epon 828 (Shell Chemical Co.) epoxy. Attention was directed to the differentiation of deformation and failure mechanisms in these composites as a function of material parameters and loading conditions. The sequence of failure mechanisms differ between 2-D and 3-D composites. Results indicated that 3-D woven composites exhibited higher shear strength than 2-D woven composites. Also, 3-D composites absorbed more impact energy than 2-D composites. Failure mechanisms of composites subjected to repeated impacts were observed intermittently by using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. The failure of 2-D composites was due to a combination of shear and tensile mode, but in 3-D composites the failure was dominated by tensile mode.

    Notes: An investigation into the effect of isothermal aging on the development of transverse cracks in cross-ply laminates of two high temperature composite systems was performed. The composite materials investigated were BASF X5260/640-800 and DuPont Avimid K/IM6. Changes in the glass transition temperature, composite weight loss, crack density, and mode I intralaminar fracture toughness were monitored during isothermal aging in air at 177°C for up to 2232 h. The two laminate configurations used in this study include two variations of the generic cross-ply configuration [02/90n]s, in which n equals 1 and 2. The results of this investigation show that a layer of degraded material forms at the surface of the X5260/640-800 bismaleimide laminates and that the thickness of the degraded layer increases with aging time. After 744 h of aging, transverse cracks form in the surface plies and an increasing crack density evolves as aging time is increased; however, transverse cracks do not form in the inner 90° ply groups with aging during the time period investigated. The Avimid K/IM6 thermoplastic polyimide laminates, which show evidence of cracking prior to aging, do not exhibit any significant change in crack density with aging. The results of the aging experiments also show that the bismaleimide system exhibits a weight loss of 1.5% and an increase in glass transition temperature from 250°C to 300°C after 2232 h of aging at 177°C, while the thermoplastic polyimide system shows a weight loss of only 0.05% and an increase in glass transition temperature from 280 to 285°C after 2232 h. Changes in the resistance to crack formation are also seen in these materials during aging. The mode I intralaminar fracture toughness, a measure of resistance to transverse crack formation, shows a 50% decrease after aging for 2232 h for the bismaleimide system, while the behavior exhibited by the thermoplastic polyimide shows little evidence of a reduction.

    Notes: Crystallization from the melt of nylon 66 in the presence of carbon fiber, aramid fiber, or nucleating agent was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and hot stage microscopy. The use of the nucleating agent resulted in an increase in crystallization rate and a decrease of induction time under both isothermal and nonisothermal conditions. The fibers were found to behave like a giant nucleating site producing a uniform transcrystalline layer having morphology and crystallization kinetics different from those of the bulk matrix. The influence of the cooling rate on the process of nonisothermal crystallization was analyzed, and the values of activation energy, calculated from the cooling rate - crystallization temperature relationship, appeared to be higher for the nucleated and for the reinforced nylon compared with that of the neat nylon 66. This implied that the presence of fibers or nucleating agent led to the development of a more ordered structure, which required a larger amount of energy for crystallization.

    Notes: Dielectric studies in epoxy and epoxy composites, containing different volume fractions of three different dielectric fillers, have been performed using the impedance bridge method for the high frequency region, 102 to 105 Hz, and the d.c. transient current method for the low frequency region, 10-4 to 10-1 Hz. It has been observed that, in the high frequency region, the dielectric constants of the epoxy composites increased with the addition of the dielectric filler and with the increase of the dielectric constant of the filler. The intensity of the β-relaxation was reduced for the composites compared to an equal volume of epoxy, owing to the decrease in the concentration of the diester segments in the composites. From the low frequency data, the epoxy and epoxy composites behaved more debye-like with increasing temperature. Also, the dielectric loss factor increased, but the thermal activation energy value to relaxation decreased two to four times in going from the unfilled to filled materials, which was thought to be attributed to Maxwell-Wagner buildup of interfacial charges at the epoxy/fillers interfaces.

    Notes: The mechanism of fiber length degradation during twin screw extrusion compounding and methods to reduce it through process and machine design are extremely important in discontinuous fiber reinforced composites. Fiber damage along the screw and the extruder die are determined for three screw designs with different mixing sections. The pellet quality, wet-out, and fiber dispersion in the extruded strands are compared. The fiber orientation distributions in the screw are determined to identify regions of higher fiber interaction. The fiber damage during subsequent injection molding has also been determined. The tensile, flexural, and impact properties of the tensile bars are compared. It is found that the residence time, fill-up, and the intesity of mixing during extrusion compounding have a predominant effect on fiber length degradation. The screw designs were seen to have a greater effect on the fiber damage in the 40 wt% glass-filled polymer than the 30 wt% glass-filled polymer. However, the mechanical properties of the 30 wt% glass-filled polymer showed an increasing trend compared to the 40 wt% glass filled polymer. A screw design that provides a balance of the fiber length, wet-out, and fiber dispersion was noted to give consistent mechanical properties.

    Notes: The plasticization of a glass/epoxy unidirectional composite by water has been investigated by Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analysis (DMTA). The analysis of the thermomechanical spectra of the water aged material revealed the apperance of a splitting of the tan δ peak associated with the α transition. This splitting was found to be dependent on the experimental conditions, i.e., the temperature scan rate, the straining frequency, and the initial water content on the composite. A thermogravimetric analysis (T.G.A) of the wet specimens has shown that this effect could be attributed to an enhanced drying of the specimens above the glass transition, during the DMTA temperature scan. A differential plasticization of the epoxy network at the aging temperature can therefore not be invoked from the appearance of a splitting of the DMTA spectra. In conditions where the sample drying was minimized, plasticization effects on the thermomechanical properties of the composite were found to be temperature independent and reversible after re-drying of the aged material. Owing to the filling of hygrothermally induced cracks with water, the composite sensitivity to plasticization can be underestimated significantly at elevated aging temperature.

    Notes: This paper deals with the conductivity of binary polymer composites filled with an electronically conductive material. A “dynamic cluster model” is offered to describe the conductivity of such polymer composites in the highly filled region, i.e. above the percolation threshold. The model is based on the following assumptions: 1a modification of the basic statistical percolation equation, i.e. σ (ϕ-ϕc)t, where t = 1.6 to 1.9, should be applied for all systems in the highly filled region, although application is limited to the range ϕ = ϕc + Δϕ, Δϕ ⇒ 0 in the strict statistical percolation approach;2the most important modifications with respect to the basic equation of the statistical percolation theory are (a) the use of a constant teff, including a constant part t1 (resembling “t” in the basic statistical percolation approach) and a variable part t2 (depending on the filler concentration ϕ of the specific mixture) and(b) the definition of ϕc as the filler concentration where a perfect three-dimensional network of the conductive phase has been established. This idea has been adopted from the bond-percolation approach of Aharoni;3the resulting equation should include parameters of specific polymer composites.The generalized equation σ = f(ϕ) is used to calculate the maximum possible conductivity of a certain mixture as well as the dependence of σ on the filler content.

    Notes: Glass fiber reinforced polyester composites, with gelcoat, are widely used as structural materials for hulls, pools, pipes, and tanks in aggressive environments, despite the lack of knowledge concerning their resistance to water in the long term. In addition, these materials may be damaged through an osmotic process, especially when immersed in water, as are boat hulls, and this phenomenon can lead to a delamination of the gelcoat and of the laminate plies. The aim of this experimental study is to evaluate the mechanical characteristics with time of orthotropic laminates subjected to accelerated tests of humid aging. The evolution of the properties with water absorption is followed by a nondestructive test procedure based on vibrational mode analysis. The results are additionally confirmed by quasi-static bending and shear tests. It is shown that the main effects of water on the composite mechanical properties are the plasticization of the matrix an the osmotic delamination of the plies; on the other hand, gelcoat blistering had no influence on the durability. This paper highlights the need for and the complementarity of both nondestructive and destructive mechanical tests for studying the long-term behavior of composites in marine environments.

    Notes: Coventional pultrusion of thermoset composites is under increasing examination for emissions of harmful volatiles from the resin wetout tank. Even though the pultrusion of thermoplastic matrix composites produces no emissions, it is difficult to wet individual fibers due to their high melt viscosities. This paper addresses both the issues of volatiles and wetting with a process called Reaction Injection Pultrusion (RIP). A prototype RIP machine was used to make both thermoplastic polyurethane and thermoset polyisocyanurate matrix composites. The RIP process produces pultruded parts with low void content, good surface finish, and acceptable mechanical properties. The low viscosity constituents used in RIP help improve fiber impregnation, while the small volume of the impregnation bath reduces emissions. Processing parameters such as line speeds, catalyst levels, and die temperaures were varied to establish processing guidelines for sustained production.

    Notes: Complex fiber-matrix interactions occur in the processing of glass fiber reinforced polymeric composites, because of the proprietary, complex composition of commercial sizings applied to the glass fiber surface. Research involving a vinyl ester resin system and three model commercial glass fiber sizings, having varying levels of solubility in the resin, has shown that micro-dielectrometry can provide important information about interactions and may be useful as a tool in optimizing sizing-matrix resin interactions. Two distinct types of interactions may be monitored by micro-dielectrometry: The initial resin swelling of the sizing, as well as the dissolution of the sizing into the resin. An estimate of the times associated with swelling and dissolution of the sizing into the matrix resin can be made from micro-dielectric measurements to optimize composite processing.

    Notes: We have examined the micro indentation hardness of a series of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy and thermoplastic polyimide (TPI) composites. In the epoxy systems, the influence of Nylon particles was studied. The effect of crystallization of the thermoplastic polyimide upon the microhardness values of the resin was also investigated. The microstructure of the TPI-composites was characterized by X-ray diffraction. The results show that the addition of carbon fibers to the neat resins greatly increases the microhardness and thus the yield stress of the composite. The value of the microhardness technique is highlighted in emphasizing the heterogeneity of the CFRC.
