    Notes: A method called “image-sedimentation”, based on the application of Stokes' law to suspension and image techniques, is proposed for the rapid analysis of particle size distributions. A parallel beam of optical light, after passing through a cell containing particles, is measured with a linear image sensor with 2048 photodetectors to determine the attenuated light intensity displayed on a monitor screen. The settling height between any given point and the liquid surface can be measured accurately by use of this image technique without any additional mechanical device to move either the light beam or the glass cell containing the suspension. Consequently, the total time required for the determination of the particle size distribution, typically of a carborundum powder having a median diameter of 5 μm, takes only 5 min as compared with more than 20 min by using other instruments based on the sedimentation principle.

    Notes: The influence of the surface roughness of solid conducting spheres on the response of a phase-Doppler anemometer (PDA) is described by using a ray theory model. A rough particle surface is modeled as an ensemble of distorted spheres. First- and second-order reflection and diffraction are considered for far-field calculations of the PDA phase difference. The numerical simulations are accompanied and supported by experimental results. Single rough Sn spheres are captured inside an electro-dynamic trap and investigated with a standard phase-Doppler system.

    Notes: In previous work, the relative performance of various methods used to characterize the particle size distribution of powders composed of fine irregularly shaped particles was assessed. It was found that methods employing Fraunhofer diffraction theory were inferior with respect to particle counting methods. Furthermore, calculated particle size distributions varied considerably between manufactures of Fraunhofer devices. It is well known that the Mie optical model can also be used to analyze the data collected by laser diffraction instruments. Here, we have compared particle size distributions collected using two Laser diffraction instruments to those determined by the Aerosizer. In our earlier work the Aerosizer was shown to produce results nearly identical to those determined by image analysis. The results of this study indicate that the use of the Mie optical model does not correct for deficiencies previously noted for laser diffraction methods. Considerable variation exists between the results obtained on laser diffraction instruments manufactured by different companies. Our earlier recommendation to use extreme caution when employing laser diffraction instruments to characterize fine powders continues to be supported in the present work.

    Notes: A new method is introduced to analyze the accuracy of phase-Doppler anemometry (PDA) for sizing large particles in two-phase flows. The method is based on Fourier optics theory (FOT) and geometrical optics theory (GOT) to calculate the intensity ratio of refractive and reflective light scattered by a sphere under a slit constraint. To examine the accuracy in calculating the light intensity, the results from the GOT method were compared with those of the direct simulation based on the generalized Lorenz-Mie theory (GLMT). This newly developed FOT/GOT method also predicts the results of phase jump due to the slit constraint. The performance of dual-mode phase-Doppler anemometry can also be simulated by this method.

    Notes: A compact and commercial aerosol generator capable of generating narrowly size-distributed aerosols with high mass concentrations was designed, fabricated and tested. The aerosol generator, consisting of a Delavan simplex nozzle (Model 30610-4), an L-shaped settling chamber and a virtual impactor with a clean air core, was modified and improved from Chein and Lundgren's work [20] to be more compact and readily commercial. The performance of the aerosol generator was evaluated using corn-oil, sodium chloride and uranine solutions. The results indicated that the cornoil droplets produced by the generator had a mass medium aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) of 7.20 ± 0.32 μm with a geometric standard deviation (GSD) of 1.48 ± 0.01 and the aerosol generation rate was 13.8 ± 1.3 mg/min. Solid aerosols generated from NaCl solution were found to have an MMAD in the range 1.39-4.88 μm with a GSD of 1.34-1.47 with the volumetric solution concentration varying from 0.1% to 9%. At the same time, the aerosol generation rate varied from 0.27 ± 0.05 to 15.8 ± 1.8 mg/min. depending on the solution concentration and the particle size produced. In addition, a 0.01% uraniane solution was tested to generate a submicron aerosol with an MMAD of 0.93 μm and a GSD of 1.48.

    Notes: The particle size distribution of crystalline solids has progressively become a key parameter in manufacturing processes, as important as chemical purity. Among the particle size determination and counting systems available on the market, very few offer the possibility of continuous in situ monitoring of the particle size evolution during crystallization. For this reason, much interest has been aroused by the appearance of the Par Tec 100, patented by Laser Sensor Technology [1, 2]. A study has been carried out in a stirred vessel to verify the precision and reproducibility of particle size measurement and elucidate the influence of experimental parameters on data accessible with this instrument. Optimum reproducibility has logically been achieved by fixing the highest possible cycle time and taking the mean of several cycles. Determinations with the Par Tec 100 are influenced variously, according to whether they relate to the total number of particles counted or to the mean size. Thus, the number of counts measured by a particle size probe largely depends on the operating conditions and more particularly on the hydrodynamic conditions, solvent, temperature and focal point position. Its dependence relative to the concentration of the solid in suspension is normal and linear for a solid and for a given monodisperse sample. To establish the relationship between the number of counts and the population density would therefore necessitate delicate calibration on a case-by-case basis. The mean size determined does not depend on suspension homogeneity, provided that the stirring speed is sufficient for a statistically significant total count. On the other hand, for a given sample, a displacement of the focal point can lead to considerable variations in the size determined. The optimal focal point position for small sizes is in fact highly sensitive. Lastly, the optimal position of the focal point is considerably dependent on the true size of the particles, which means that this counter is unsuitable for the precise analysis of a dispersed sample since each particle size class would require a different setting of the focal point. In addition, the sizes determined, irrespective of the products studied, appear to be underestimated for large particles and over estimated for small particles.

    Notes: Microcontamination of product surfaces by deposited particles is an important problem in clean technologies. A most sensitive product to contamination by particles is a wafer during chip production. Therefore, methods for monitoring particle deposition on wafer surfaces have been developed in the last decade. A wafer with an unstructured and reflecting surface is inserted into the process equipment. After some time, depending on the process, this wafer is removed from the process equipment and is analysed with respect to the number of deposited particles using a wafer scanner. However, in situ particle detection in a process chamber is not possible with this technique. This would be possible if, instead of a monitor wafer, a transparent glass plate is mounted, e.g. in the housing of the process equipment. Then the illuminating and scattered light detection equipment can be mounted outside the process equipment. Since both the illuminating laser beam and the scattered light have to be transmitted through the glass plate, losses will occur, which will reduce the lower limit of detection with respect to particle size. In this article we estimate the detection possibilities theoretically and experimentally.A simple model based on Mie and vector scattering theory has been developed to describe the light-scattering behavior of a single spherical particle on a glass plate with random surface irregularities. The scattered light of individual particles of four particle sizes (1.03, 1.6, 2.92 and 4.23 μm) on the same glass surface and from the uncontaminated area of the glass plate was measured for unpolarized and normally incident light. The values of the scattered light from this model were compared with the experimental results. The comparison shows a reasonable agreement of the angular distribution of the scattered light. The developed model is used to predict the lower limit of detection for particles on a transparent surface. The theoretical estimations show that it should be possible to detect particles of a diameter down to 0.2 μm with the described measurement technique.

    Notes: The Scattering of focused laser beams by arbitrarily shaped dielectric bodies is investigated theoretically. The beam description is based on Davis third-order beam approximation for the field components. The scattering problem can be solved on a spherical basis by the extended boundary condition method or by the so-called modified version of the extended boundary condition method. For spheroidal particles with small eccentricities, a perturbation technique for the internal subproblem of the extended boundary condition method is described. This procedure is applied to analyse the influence of the particle shape and orientation on the response of a phase-Doppler system.

    Notes: Rainbow refractometry allows the determination of the refractive indices of droplets if a homogeneous refractive index can be assumed throughout the whole droplet. The influence of gradients on the angular position of the rainbow was examined for refractive index distributions with constant gradients and for distributions as they occur during cooling, heating and burning of droplets. Geometrical optics were used to determine rainbow positions. For a given value of refractive index at the surface, the rainbow position is in many cases a measure for the gradient itself. It was found that information obtained for constant gradients can often be used in cases with more complex distributions, which are found, for instance, for droplets undergoing heat-transfer processes. Significant errors may be obtained only for a very short initial phase of the process. Experimental results obtained with monosized droplet streams, which confirm theoretical predictions of the influence of gradients on the rainbow position, are presented.

    Notes: An instrument is proposed for the visualisation and measurement of mixtures of small and large particles. The original concept was to use spectral extinction for sub-micron particles and scattering patterns for larger sizes. However, the former method is sensitive to the refractive index, which may be unknown or vary with wavelength in an unknown way. The experiments demonstrated this to be a problem. The forward scatter, on the other hand, is not so sensitive to this. It is shown here that the combination of scattered intensity as a function of both angle and Wavelength provides scatter diagrams for which there is good agreement between theory and experiment. The influence of quite small volume fractions of particles as small as 0.3μm mixed with 90μ particles is easily seen. The scatter diagrams suggest the use of image analysis for size measurement and quality control.

    Notes: During the spherical agglomeration process, a suspended solid is agglomerated by adding a binding liquid. First, mircoagglomerates or flocs are produced, which are compacted in the course of the process. Agglomerate size was evaluated by laser diffraction spectrometry, image analysis was used to determine the size and some adequately defined shape parameters calculated by Fourier analysis of the particle contour.The shape analysis confirms the visual observations; the compaction of the flocs is expressed by the corresponding change of the shape parameters. The influence of several process parameters on changes in agglomerate shape can be described quantitatively and help to gain an insight into agglomeration mechanisms. The particle size distributions determined by image analysis and laser diffraction spectrometry hardly differ for fairly spherical flocs or agglomerates. Concerning the size distribution of the irregular flocs, laser diffraction spectrometry measures larger particles than image analysis.

    Notes: The accurate measurement of mass flux is identified as being essential for the successful use of phase-Doppler anemometry (PDA) in many applications, in particular with sprays. Thus measured sizes of individual droplets and the cross-sectional area to which the flux measurement is referenced must be reliable. This paper investigates sources of measurement error in each of these quantities and provides means to eliminates or minimize these errors. A new PDA configuration, termed dual-mode PDA, is introduced as an implementation of these suggestions. Example measurements illustrate the advantages of the system over conventional arrangements.

    Notes: A phenomenological model with 12 parameters for rotary drum granulation with the help of material balance equations taking into account the growth and death functions was developed. Experiments were conducted and the data were used to obtain model parameters with reference to the operating conditions and for validation of the model.     Notes: Ultrasonic standing wave atomization (USWA) is a new process capable of atomizing both high surface energy liquids and highly viscous liquids. Atomization is achieved through acoustic forces acting upon a liquid jet which is guided into the central pressure node of a standing wave field. Spherical metal powders with minimum mass median diameters of less than 15 μm have been produced from metal melts with surface tensions of about 0.5 N/m. Organic liquids with viscosities between 1 and 10 Pas have been atomized, yielding mass median diameters from 20 to 330 μm. The influence of different operating parameters on the mass median diameter of metal melts and highly viscous liquids was evaluated. Parameters which were varied were ambient gas pressure, vibration amplitude of the transducers, mass flow rate, density of liquid, viscosity of the liquid, surface tension and the outlet diameter. The powders and sprays were analyzed with laser diffraction particle sizers. The physical background of the atomization process is discussed and an equation for the prediction of the mass median diameter is derived.

    Notes: Coherent transmission and reflection of a plane wave through a monolayer of discrete particles are considered on the basis of simple and physically transparent formulae for the single scattering approximation (SSA) corrected by introducing a multiple scattering permittivity factor. This factor allows for multiple scattering of Waves between monolayer particles, opposite to the SSA. The multiple scattering permittivity factor is considered on the basis of the quasi-crystalline approximation (QCA) via Ť matrix formalism. The multiple scattering permittivity factor and parameters for obtaining coherent transmission and reflection coefficients (the effective extinction coefficient and the transmission and reflection coefficients due to rescattering) are calculated within the scope of QCA and plotted for comparison with SSA results. The expressions for these values are simplified for small Rayleigh particles to simple analytical formulae.

    Notes: This paper describes a study to determine the most appropriate particle size parameter for polydisperse powders dispersed as aerosol and detected by light scattering. It is relevant to many areas of engineering research. By means of calculations of the intensity of light scattered from particles of different sizes, it has been shown that the surface median aerodynamic diameter (SMAD) is an appropriate measure for polydisperse aerosolised powders. The microscope-based procedure for obtaining the SMAD is described, as well as its implementation for narrowly-graded polydisperse powders of fused alumina of type which have been widely used in studies of particle transport in wind tunnels. It was shown that for the fused alumina powders examined, SMAD = 1.25 x (PASMAD), where PASMAD is the projected area surface median aerodynamic diameter.

    Notes: Computer simulations of diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) for monomers to investigate the effects of size and of lognormal distribution on the fractal dimensionality of the aggregates were conducted on a two-dimensional lattice. The results show the DLA clusters posses multifractal characteristics. For clusters consisting of monodisperse monomers, the bifurcation point on the graph of the pair correlation function (PCF) for each cluster is located right at the monomers size under investigation The textural dimension (Df1) has a stable value of about 1.65, whereas the structural dimension (Df2) decreased with increase in monomer size. For the cases with monomers in log-normal distributions, the textural dimension is around 1.67; however, the structural dimension decreases with increasing polydispersity of monomer size.

    Notes: When properly measured and interpreted angle of repose (AOR) can be a useful method of characterising a powder. Unfortunately, a multitude of definitions and measuring equipment is used. A review of the inherent problems is presented in the first part of this paper.The second part of the paper describes the improvements made to a measuring device developed originally for measuring the angle of repose of soda ash, so that a wider range of powders can be tested. In the improved design, the tendency of cohesive and semi-cohesive powders to block the device's funnel has been eliminated.A total of 73 powders consisting of four different materials, and covering Groups A, A/C and C of Geldart's classification, have been tested using the new equipment. The results show that AOR increases systematically with decrease in mean particle size. Combination of AOR measured in the new device with aerated bulk density provides a quick, sensitive and effective method for characterising a wide range of powders.

    Notes: This paper reports an experimental study on the stability, coagulation and diffusion of molecular clusters and ultrafine particles generated from organic vapors by corona ionizers. Upon leaving the ionizer, particles are made to flow within several types of vessels: depending on the specific geometry of the flow system, clusters either coagulate into large particles or are deposited on the walls. Particles larger than 4nm and molecular clusters penetrate through a wire-screen type diffusion battery, but particles in the size range between 2 and 4nm are collected. Among the organic compounds tested (aromatics, alcohols, ketones and others), only aromatic compounds appear to yield unstable clusters which grow into detectable particles (〉2nm) through Brownian coagulation. The other compounds either do not undergo the gas-to-particle conversion process or are too small to be detected. Furthermore, the presence of moisture seems to be of fundamental importance in the particle generation phenomenon. The addition of alcohols to the vapor mixture inhibits particle formation.

    Notes: This paper reviews the principle of the phase-Doppler particle sizer by means of examples of the effects of varying the various experimental parameters. The examples are computed by means of a comprehensive numerical model of a complete phase-Doppler system including many practical aspects such as aperture size, polarization filters and detector properties. First the phase-Doppler principle is explained as a logical development of an interferometric measurement of the phase of the light scattered from a particle. Then the standard phase-Doppler analyzer (PDA) is decribed followed by some newer or less known variations of the principle intended to measure, e.g., in the backscatter direction, to size very small particles or to determine the refractive index of a particle. Finally, the trajectory problem in PDA measurements is briefly discussed.

    Notes: Light scattering by particles is often used to determine velocities or concentrations of particles in gaseous or liquid streams. Within the Lorenz-Mie theory, light scattering is well understood both for a single compact spherical particle and a single multilayered particle in a non-absorbing surrounding medium. However, in some cases of practical importance the Lorenz-Mie theory in its present form may fail to describe the scattering because the host medium is absorbing (e.g. water droplets in oil). In this case, a new treatment of the scattering theory is required. In previous work, solutions were obtained in the far-field of the scattering sphere. In this paper, a rigorous solution is derived from the calculation of the total absorption rate of the particle in the host medium, which is valid for all distances from the surface of the encapsulated particle. It is shown that it is necessary to consider finite sizes R of the integrating sphere when dealing with absorbing host media. Cross-sections are defined which are characteristic quantities not only for the particle, depending on the size of a conceptual sphere around the scatterer and the imaginary part of the refractive index of the host medium. The results obtained are discussed for the case of non-absorbing host media and in the far-field approximation. Some numerical examples are given which are also related to experimental results.

    Notes: The principle of the dual burst technique (DBT) based on phase-Doppler anemometry (PDA) is proposed for simultaneous particle refractive index, size and velocity measurements. This technique used the trajectory effects in PDA systems to separate the two contributions of the different scattering processes. In the case of forward scattering and refracting particles, it is shown that from the phase of the reflected contribution, the particle diameter can be deduced, whereas from the refracted contribution the particle refractive index and velocity can be obtained. Furthermore, the intensity ratio of these two scattering processes can be used for absorption measurements. Simulations based on generalized Lorenz-Mie theory and experimental tests using monodispersed droplets of different refractive indices and absorption coefficients have validated this technique.

    Notes: Using a monodisperse poly(methyl methacrylate) dispersion it was shown that light reflection at the sample cuvette walls may greatly influence the results of both static (SLS) and dynamic (DLS) light scattering experiments. Considering SLS, this reflection phenomenon mostly causes an overestimation of the scattered intensity at high scattering angles, which may give rise to the emergence of an additional, artificial peak in the lower region of the particle size distribution. On the other hand, the influence of reflection on DLS experiments was shown to be particularly important in the upper region of the particle size distribution. The experimentally observed phenomena were explained from basic principles of both particle sizing methods. Finally, it was shown that the disturbing effect of reflection could be avoided by modifying either the hardware or the software of the SLS and DLS techniques.

    Notes: Designing modern devices for bulk solids storage and handling requires an increasingly complex understanding of the handled bulk solids' mechanical behaviour. Models able to describe the behaviour of bulk solids can neither be formulated nor their parameters determined from common shear tests, since these do not contain sufficient information especially about the materials' stiffness characteristics. The paper describes the response envelope as a measure of the deformation resistance and its experimental determination from biaxial tests. It is shown that for fine limestone powder the stiffness in compression is only about 1/70 of the stiffness in expansion. The shape of the response envelope depends only on the ratio between the principal stresses at the stress state considered, whereas the size of the response envelope also depends on the stress magnitude.

    Notes: Fiber optic dynamic light scattering (FODLS) was used to study the kinetics of aging processes in emulsions of n-alkanes stabilized by a surfactant. The method is particularly useful for this purpose because it permits measurements in concentrated emulsions. Complications that may occur in traditional DLS due to the extreme dilution, such as solubilization of the particles in the medium, can be easily avoided in this way. The experimental results show that the main aging process is Ostwald ripening. The results are in agreement with theoretical predictions based on the Lifshitz-Slyozov-Wagner (LSW) theory as far as it concerns the relation between the molecular solubility of the n-alkanes (in the aqueous phase) and the Ostwald ripening rate. This illustrates that the main rate-determining factor is the molecular diffusion of the alkane molecules through the continuous (aqueous) phase. The Ostwald ripening rate is affected by the concentration of surfactant but in all situations is higher than expected from LSW theory.

    Notes: A series of industrial powders, most of them organic, were characterized in terms of volumetric mean size, size distribution, density, particle shape, water rentention characteristics (under a series of controlled ambient relative humidities) and loosely packed and densely packed voidages (giving the compressibility). The behaviour of the powders in powder handling apparatus (a precision powder filler) was also determined. The minimum and maximum bulk densities of the powders were related to the properties of the individual particles by means of a semi-empirical equation. The filling capacity of the powder handling apparatus was found to be related to the maximum bulk density of the powder while the filling accuracy turned out to be related to the compressibility of the powder. Knowing these interrelations made it possible to predict the powder behaviour in the handling apparatus directly on basis of the particle properties.

    Notes: It is well established that particle size and shape substantially influence the bulk properties of powdered materials. Although these characteristics are closely interrelated, the tendency has been to analyse the particle size independently from particle shape. The aim of this work was the assessment of particle shape through particle sizing data. For this purpose, three different particle shape materials - glass beads (spherical), crushed glass (moderately irregular) and mica (lamellar) - were tested, employing four particle sizers. The shape factor selected was the Wadell's sphericity, which was evaluated utilizing distinct equations. The comparison of the results reveals problems arising from the use of approximations rather than more fundamental equations.

For solving the RTE with characteristics depending on the propagation direction of the radiation beam, an algorithm is developed based on the method of layer doubling. The DMA transfer function was determined by operating two identical DMAs in series. The DMA was investigated at a sheath to aerosol flow rate ratio of between 10 and 1. Usually for particles above 50 nm the parameters of the assumed triangular transfer function, i.e. height and half-width, approach the ideal values, which depend only on the flow ratio. For particle size below 50 nm the height decreases from 0.9 at 50 nm to 0.18 at 5 nm. The half-width increase from the ideal value 0.1 to about 0.17. The observed changes of the transfer function are due to diffusional effects resulting in losses mainly in the inlet and outlet and also broadening of the aerosol stream inside the DMA. The determined transfer functions were also compared with transfer functions calculated using a theoretical model. The agreement proved to be satisfactory. The half-widths and the transmission efficiencies of the conventional TSI-DMA (Model 3071), TSI-short with Teflon and also black Delin insulator as a function of particle size are compared to demonstrate the improvements in performance.

    Notes: The precipitation of barium sulfate was investigated by photon correlation spectroscopic (PCS) measurements of the growing crystals combined with electrical conductivity measurements of the mother solution. Small silica seeds (36nm) were added to the solution. Therefore, heterogeneous nucleation did not take place on the walls and on the stirrer, which is usually the case, but on the seeds. Hence the growth of the crystals which had nucleated on the seeds could be studied by PCS. In order to avoid the ill-conditioned inversion of the measured raw data, the autocorrelation functions, a population balance model was used to calculate these functions with the help of a kinetic model taken from the literature. The measured an the calculated autocorrelation functions could coincide and adjustable parameters were found from a least-squares fit. The measurements revealed that nucleation is strongly enhanced by PMA-PVS (polymaleic acid-polyvinylsulfonic acid). However, a simple model which assumes langmuir adsorption of PMA-PVS on the crystal surface did not describe the kinetics very well. The nucleation rate in the absence of the additive was found to be J=1.3·1010 exp(-27/In2S) [m-3s-1], while the growth rate was G=2.6·10-8(S-1)2/3 S1/3 exp(-29/3 In S) [ms-1]. These results match results taken from the literature fairly well.

    Notes: Response of a phase Doppler system to irregularly shaped particles is examined and shown to deviate qualitatively as well as quantitatively from the spherical particles. Nevertheless, the measured phase distributions based on an ensemble of particles exhibit a high degree of order and simplicity. The experimental data and the stochastic modeling of the process have shown that the phase Doppler technique can be used successfully for in-situ sizing and velocimetry of irregular particles. In the case of irregular crystalline particles, mean size and standard deviation can be deduced without requiring any assumptions regarding the functional form of the size distribution. As opposed to other optical techniques, phase Doppler can be used, in principle, near the backscattering location, so that a single optical window would be employed for transmission of laser light and collection of the scattered signals. Furthermore, size measurements can be velocity-resolved, i.e. a size distribution can be associated with each bin of the velocity histogram.

    Notes: A novel technique to determine the size of particles suspended in a stirred vessel is investigated. The method uses microphotography to obtain a still image of the particles in situ. The equivalent circular diameter of the particles is obtained from the photographs using digital image analysis. The particles used for the test were certified particle size standards of a very small tolerance in diameter deviation. The size comparison was determined as a percent error between the measured particle diameter (equivalent circular diameter) and the diameter established by the particle manufacturer. To determine the limiting ranges of particle size and concentrations, spherical particles in a size range of approximately 1 to 10.0 μm (microns) in diameter were employed in the test. Concentrations varied from 0.00005% to 0.1% (mass basis). For each particle size, an aqueous solution of the particles was prepared at the desired concentration and placed in a stirred vessel. Photographs of the solutions were made at 25.5x, 40x, 60x and 80x magnification. For all sizes of particles, the entire range of concentration was examined.The results indicate a minimum size resolution of approximately 3μm, in a corresponding concentration range of 0.0001% to 0.05%. Similar limits on concentration were found for the larger diameter particles, although a true upper limit for the largest particle sizes was not established. The functional concentration range appears to shift towards higher mass concentrations with increasing particle size. For 2.92 μm diameter particles, the error in size measurement was found to be below 10% for a concentration range of 0.0005% to 0.05%. Additionally, a relationship between turbidity and the error was seen at low particle concentration levels where decreasing levels of turbidity generated increasing levels of error.

    Notes: A new technique for the calculation of the optical properties of agglomerated spherical primary particles is presented. By means of the so-called virtual refractive index, the multiple scattering within the agglomerate is decribed by a modified Mie solution, thus avoiding restrictions with respect to the primary particle size. An additional benefit of the method is the small numerical expense required, permitting practical use for complex agglomerate structures such as real combustion aerosols. Utilizing this method, attention is focused on the calculation of the extinction cross-section of real combustion aerosols in order to discuss the results of multiple-wavelength extinction measurements within combustion systems. It is found that approximately the primary particle diameter is determined. Furthermore, the error that occurs can be avoided by means of the method presented without a detailed knowledge of the agglomerate size. Thus, the present work eliminates some current uncertainties inherent in optical combustion aerosol characterization.

    Notes: After having recalled basic theoretical results concerning the extension of generalized Lorenz-Mie theory to the case of multilayered spheres, results connected with phase-Doppler anemometry are considered, showing the influence of Gaussian beam intensity profiles on the light scattering properties of these particles. Particular emphasis is placed on the case of water-coated carbon core particles, for which the possibility of obtaining simultaneous size measurements of the core and outer diameters is discussed. The sensitivity of the technique to particles with a refractive index profile is also considered, showing that this technique is more sensitive to changes in the average refractive index of the particles than to refractive index profiles, such as produced by high pressure and temperature stresses, at least for the studied geometry.

    Notes: A new phase Doppler anemometry (PDA) signal processing method based on a Hilbert transform algorithm is introduced and analysed. By generating a 90° phase-shifted burst signal in the time domain, the envelope of the Doppler burst can be determined. In addition, this envelope is approximated by a Gaussian exponential function. The difference of the maxima of these Gaussian approximations for two related PDA bursts gives an estimate of the time difference between these time shifted signals. With the introduction of this estimation method, the restriction to the [0,360°] interval resulting from conventional signal analysis may be avoided in many cases. To investigate the dependence on SNR, burst position, burst frequency and sampling rate, results of computer simulations are presented. The feasibility of the method is demonstrated briefly by experimental results. Phase differences of more than 2000° arising from the measurement of monodisperse droplets by a conventional PDA setup could be determined.

    Notes: Electrically active fibrous filters, that is fibrous filters whose fibres carry a permanent electric charge, are an increasingly popular alternative to conventional fibrous filters in applications where low pressure drop and high collection efficiencies are critical. The advantage of these materials is the additional collection efficiency, due to electrostatic mechanisms, that can be achieved without pressure drop increase. The efficiency of these materials can fall as they are loaded with aerosol particles, so it is necessary that proper account be taken of this process during use. A complete understanding of the mechanisms responsible for this reduction in efficiency has not yet been reached. An experimental study has been undertaken at Loughborough University of Technology investigating the loading behaviour of a mixed fibre type electrically active material. The experimental techniques used in this work and experimental findings with a range of aerosol particle sizes are reported here.

    Notes: A concern about all reinforcing fibers is the extent to which they are respirable. The degree of respirability of a particle is frequently estimated in terms of its aerodynamic equivalent diameter being less than a certain value (typically 3.5 to 7 μ). However, the aerodynamic equivalent diameter, like the Stokes diameter, is only defined exactly for spheres, which is far from the shape of acicular fibers. Thus, it is useful to be able to calculate, based on actual fiber diameter and aspect ratio, the effective Stokes and aerodynamic equivalent diameters of various fibers. The present paper derives simple expression for relating the two effective diameters to actual fiber dimensions.Calculated results are compared with experimental data for glass fiber and three fractions of phosphate fiber [1], which is a short, reinforcing inorganic fiber. Agreement is seen to be good. Phosphate fiber was fractionated using a sedimentation technique described in the paper. The resulting fractions were characterized by semi-manual measurements of micrographic dimensions and compared with results obtained from particle size instruments based on sedimentation principles. Based on these results, a large weight fraction of phosphate fiber is predicted not to be respirable.

    Notes: The avalanching behaviour of two coal types was determined, one of good and the other of poor handleability characteristics. This revealed significant differences in the nature of flow of the coals. Analysis of the strange attractors of the weight series of avalanches enabled quanitification of this difference, and the establishment of practical, relative criteria for the measurement of coal handleability. These criteria will now enable a structured study of the variables that affect handleability, for example proportion of fines and moisture content, and industrial consumers of coal to specify minimum acceptable limits for its transport characteristics.

    Notes: Many different methods for size measurement are known and since they differ in their physical principles, different results are also obtained. In the recent past, there were rapid developments in new measurement techniques and one can now quickly and routinely determine particle sizes in the very fine range. Smaller particle sizes, on the other hand, tend to increase the probability of agglomeration. The measurement of the particle sizes for magnetic materials is not well understood and this paper reports results regarding the size determination of very fine magnetic materials. Because of their dipole moment, these particles tend to agglomerate even more, which in turn causes certain difficulties during the measurements. Wet and dry laser measurement systems were compared and also magnetic materials with different permeabilities in order to establish the influence of individual factors on the measurement process and on the accuracy of the results obtained.

    Notes: This paper gives a theoretical basis for calculating Fraunhofer diffraction patterns of arbitrary polyhedron particles. It is shown that this solution can be used for calculating a scatter matrix adapted to the particle shape in a straightforward manner. Some simulations were made to show the difference between the size distribution by volume obtained with a scatter matrix for spheres and with that for the appropriate shape. Finally, some experimentally measured signatures from platelets and rods are evaluated in order to show that the spherical equivalent diameter could be accurately retrieved.

    Notes: Within the past 20 years, particle size analysis with laser diffraction (LD) has been subject to rapid development, extending the size range stepwise from 1-200 μm to about 0.1-3500 μm. The limits of LD are discussed in terms of light sources, the influence of the beam diameter, special Fourier optics and a new detector design.It is shown that the size range is not only restricted by the wavelength of the laser and the transmission limits of the medium. Its extension is mainly related to improvements in the measurement of the angular intensity distribution. Influences from stability and flow dominate on the coarse side of the measuring range. On the fine side, the spatial extension of aerosols and the resulting demand for extended working distances can be covered only in a parallel laser beam. Extended Fourier optics in combination with an adapatable beam expansion technique and a detector with virtual borders between semicircular elements overcome the existing limits and extend the size range to a lower limit of about 0.05 μm and an upper limit above 10 mm.The sensititivity limit of LD is approaching that of single particle counting techniques. For medical spray and inhaler applications, a 0.1% optical concentration can be converted to particle size distributions even for time-resolved analyses with sample intervals of a few milliseconds.The reproducibility of the sensor, with a standard deviation typically much less than 0.5%, is no longer the limiting factor. The reproducibility of the results is mainly dominated by the reproducibility of sampling, sample splitting, dispersion and the contamination of the optical path. The latter can be improved by the control of flow, especially for in-line and inhaler applications.

    Notes: Dynamic light scattering has become a standard technique of investigating colloidal suspensions and polymer solutions. The experimental field autocorrelation function ĝ1 (t) can often be well modelled by a Laplace transform relating ĝ1 (t) to a distribution of decay times A(τ). In simple systems A(τ) can usually be directly related to a distribution of molecular weights, particle sizes, diffusion coefficients or other physically relevant quantities, With constrained regularization methods, the parameter-free estimation of A(τ) has become straightforward. In complex systems, the resulting A(τ) may contain several components the identification of which is not always obvious. The problem often originates in a superposition of diffusive and angle-independent components that have different variations of their respective decay times with the scattering vector. A method is presented based on a simultaneous fit of several autocorrelation functions measured at several different scattering angles, which, using simple and reasonable assumptions, yields a robust analysis of the spectra of decay times. The application of the method is illustrated on simulated autocorrelation functions and also on real experimental data obtained on a variety of different polymer systems.

    Notes: A light-scattering instrument that is normally used for particle size analysis was applied to obtain information about particle shape. Micro-cuboids of dimensions a × b × c in the range between 10 and 1000 μm, which can be accurately manufactured employing special technology, were used as labelled samples for the determination of 3-D features. Particle projections at different orientations due to turbulent motion were measured sequentially. The laser diffraction of cuboids rotating in a turbulent flow is described theoretically using a simplified model, i.e. rotation of a rectangle. The change in the projection areas of rotating cuboids is connected with their rotational velocity. The power spectrum density of rotational velocity of cuboids and spheres was determined and the influence of particle shape on the power spectrum density established. The frequency distribution of projection sizes was found to be suitable for particle shape estimation.

    Notes: Laser diffraction (LD), with reference to the analysis time, is highly advantageous for the automation of particle size analysis. The high measuring frequencies alloy quasi-continous measuring operation. The fineness values obtained form the particle size distribution (PSD) can be transformed into electrical signals for automatic process control.For industrial purposes, an encapsulated measuring cell was developed where the laser beam penetrates the dispersed fines stream via two optical windows. Thus, hazardous materials can also be measured, specifically pharmaceutical or chemical products, or applications requiring explosion-proof plant design are possible. Great efforts had to be made to keep the inner side of the windows clean form product dust. Ultimately, batches running for more than 8 h could be analysed continuously without any contamination of the windows. For the PSD measurements, a standard LD instrument was used with a measuring range of 0.5/0.9-175 μm.As product fineness is monitored continuously in-stream, and virtually without delay, any changes in the fineness during classifier operation can be detected immediately. On the one hand, this opens up a new field for studies of classifier performance. On the other, immediate quality control of even very small batches is possible during the micronization process. The results demonstrate very clearly, for example, the importance of controlling the feed rate to the classifier. Therefore, fineness control by means of this in-line technique gives superior advantages for direct adjustment of the classifier speed.

    Notes: A planar phase Doppler system is used to measure submicron droplets generated by an electrospray. Measured drop dia-meters are correlated with the liquid properties and the condition for transition of the spray from the single-jet mode to the multi-jet mode is introduced. In another set of measurements using a standard phase Doppler system, combined size and velocity data are employed to deduce the drag force on the drops. In a situation where the drag force is balanced primarily by the electric force, the phase Doppler measurements allow to estimate the power-law relationship between the charge on a drop and its diameter and hence, many provide insights into the underlying atomization mechanisms.

    Notes: Only a few optical techniques are available to measure simultaneously the velocity and size of coarse particles dispersed in a fluid. Since particles are randomly shaped with a rough surface and inhomogeneous with respect to the refractive index, phase-based sizing techniques are not reliable. The applied optical sizing technique is based on light intensity measurement of a scattering particle crossing a top-hat laser beam. This optical set-up was first described by Gréhan et al. In the range of geometrical optics, the sampled light at the receiving system is proportional to the square of the equivalent particle diameter within the diameter range 20-700 μmVelocity information is obtained by using a smaller concentric laser Doppler probe volume. Coincidence of the signals is guaranteed by the optical set-up, since the smaller probe volume diameter defines the triggering event. To demonstrate the performance of the system, some diameter distributions measured with the top-hat beam system are compared with results for a commercial laser diffraction system for different materials. The system is applied to obtain size-correlated velocity information of a particle-laden two-phase flow at a single-sided backward-facing step.

    Notes: Imaging techniques in particle sizing have always been important. Nevertheless, owing to the progress in CCD cameras, these techniques have found new potential which strongly depends on the capability to describe the image formation. Based on a combination of the generalized Lorenz-Mie theory and the diffraction theory, the image characteristics are described, taking into account the beam size, particle location, direction of observation and collecting optics characteristics. In the case of forward detection, a finite coherence is introduced and the results are compared with those obtained by a convolution approach, with the point spread function assumed to be Gaussian. Then some experimental results are displayed which underline the improvement achieved in particle size measurement.

    Notes: The production of liquid sprays represents a key technology for a wide range of industrial proceses. Most applications currently use pressure or air-assisted atomization, resulting in the production of polydisperese sprays. Recent advances in experimental and numerical techniques for investigating liquid spraying processes, however, have enabled a closer examination of parameter optimization, leading to the conclusion that in may cases, a much narrower size distribution, or even a monodisperse spray, may exhibit many advantages. Currently monodisperse droplet generators, or drop-on-demand generators, do not meet this challenge of producing monodisperse sprays, primarily owing to the very low volume flow rate of liquid which is atomized. In the present work, a monodisperse sprya generator is introduced, which overcomes this difficulty for many applications.

    Notes: Measurements of droplet deformation during wall impingement were performed for ethanol droplets and water droplets with diameters ranging from 100 to 200 μm. The wall temperature is well above the Leidenfrost temperature of the droplet liquid. With monodisperse droplet streams and a special illumination technique, slow motion images of the phenomena can be obtained. Measurements with high temporal resolution below 1 μs are possible using a standard video camera. The experimental results are compared with numerical results, which were obtained by solving the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible fluids including surface tension effects. The fluids are treated with the volume-of-fluid method and the free surface is modeled according to the continuum-surface-force model. Numerical and experimental results show good agreement.

    Notes: The particle size distribution of an aerosol generated from an aqueous system is difficult to analyse because of the shrinkage of the droplets due to solvent evaporation. These problems are very important for the characterization of medical nebulizers, since most of the drugs delivered via inhalation are water soluble. In situ methods for droplet size analysis, such as laser diffraction, phase Doppler anemometry and light scattering, do not determine either the initial or the equilibrium size distribution. With the residual technique, which means evaporating the droplets and measuring the size and concentration of the residuals, the instability of the aqueous droplets plays no role and the necessary radioactive labelling of the sprayed material allows a direct determination of the mass flow rate at the mouthpiece of the nebulizer. In this way it is possible to discriminate between the delivered drug solution and the water necessary to humidify the incoming air. The output of nebulizers of different designs is given for various operating conditions, filling volumes and solution concentrations. The measured droplet size distribution of a nebulizer is found to be fixed mainly by its internal impaction system.

    Notes: A Diesel spray injected into a high-pressure test chamber was investigated with two different holographic techniques. The usual off-axis recording geometry was used to investigate the very early beginning of the injection. Double pulsing of the recording laser facilitated velocity measurements. By using two different reference angles for the two recording the two images can be separated upon reconstruction of the holograms. Thus superior image quality could be achieved. Processes leading to jet formation could be identified: the spray tip is periodically axially decelerated and radially accelerated. Consequently, liquid moves at the tip off axis. The spray consists of fast central region surrounded by a slower outer jet region. The outer jet region exhibits periodic droplet concentration fluctuations which are interpreted as a result of the periodic processes at the spray tip. Some high concentration regions in the outer jet region were investigated using a dark-field holographic technique. This technique permits single droplet velocity measurements and local droplet concentration determination at extremely high droplet concentrations. The most important result of these investigations is that no correlation between the local droplet concentration and the droplet velocity could be found.

    Notes: The results of recent researches on twin-fluid atomization are briefly reviewed, with particular emphasis on the effects of air and liquid properties on mean drop size. It is stressed that no single equation for the mean drop sizes produced in twin-fluid atomization can satisfactorily correlate all the experimental data from any given atomizer. This is because for all types of atomizers the mechanism of liquid breakup changes from one basic mode to another with changes in atomizer operating conditions and/or liquid properties. These different modes of atomization exhibit different dependencies on atomizer dimensions and various physical properties such as liquid viscosity and air density. Equations for estimating the mean drop sizes produced in the various modes of twin-fluid atomization are presented and discussed.

    Notes: Unsteady two-dimensional thermal analysis has been performed on PEEK/AS-4 fiber thermoplastic composites. To calculate the crystallinity of the composite, a spherulite growth model was applied. A numerical analysis was carried out with variations in mold cooling rate, the prepreg lay-up, and the composite geometry. The effect of geometry and the cooling rate is significant in the temperature profiles. The degree of crystallinity varies with the cooling rate, but the gradient of crystallinity is small, with the exception of complex geometries at fast cooling rates. The results of numerical calculations are in excellent agreement with the experiments and offer validation of the numerical formulation.

    Notes: The Properties of three kinds of carbon fibers, which were pre-carbonized at 500, 550, and 600°C during two-stage continuous carbonization, were measured after being air oxidized for periods of 1 to 6 min at 550°C. The effects of precarbonization temperatures on mechanical properties, density, morphology, elemental compositions, and microstructure of the carbon fibers are discussed. The pre-carbonization process affected strongly the surface properties and mechanical properties of the final carbon fibers, as measured after air oxidation. Carbon fibers measured one to six min after air oxidation showed a different oxidation behavior in the surface morphology for each pre-carbonization temperature. Optimum conditions not only improved the tensile strength and modulus by over 50%, but also increased the density and oxygen content.

    Notes: The surface composition and energy of carbon fiber has been carefully analyzed and quantified. Untreated, AU, surface-treated, AS, and heat-treated AHT fibers were all studied. AS fiber was surface-treated by an electrolytic oxidation process. AHT fiber was heat-treated at elevated high temperatures under vacuum. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS or ESCA) was used to investigate the surface elemental concentration of carbon fibers. The corresponding surface free energies of these fibers were calculated from the contact angles measured by a dynamic contact angle analyzer. Results showed a strong correlation between the surface treatment and heat-treatment history and the surface chemistry of carbon fibers. After oxidation treatment, the surface free energy was increased by adding functional group elements (oxygen and nitrogen). However, these added elements could be removed by high temperature treatment under vacuum. The diffusion of O, N, and Na was discussed. The correlation between oxygen and nitrogen concentration and carbon fiber surface free energy has been plotted. These fibers would be used to quantify the relationship between carbon fiber surface free energy and the interfacial shear strength of the fiber-polymer interface.

    Notes: Sizings significantly affect the processing and final performance characteristics of resin transfer molded (RTM) parts. Manufacturers often use sizings to enhance compatability between the resin and reinforcement and to assist processing. In particular, such coatings can affect the microscopic flow characteristics of resins during the infusion stages of the RTM process. To understand the mechanisms by which sizings affect preform wet-out and the extent of such effects, the influence of fiber sizings and fiber loadings on the flow of a vinyl-ester resin system, through axially aligned carbon fibers, have been measured. The results and analysis of the experiments reported herein form the basis for a phenomenological model that describes the effect of sizings on micro-flow in RTM. Furthermore, the work provides insight into the relationships among micro-flow, macro-flow, and preform infiltration. It is seen that sizings dramatically influence micro-impregnation and, for the flow configuration studied, radial micro-flow into fiber bundles was the rate limiting process for complete fiber bundle infusion.

    Notes: A sequential design optimization scheme based on artificial neural networks (ANN) is proposed. It is a combination of an ANN model and a nonlinear programming algorithm. The proposed scheme is implemented with network training, optimization, and sheet molding compound (SMC) process simulation in a closed loop. A “cyclic coordinate search” technique is employed to initiate the optimization process, to collect training data for the neural network model, and to perform a preliminary design sensitivity analysis. Emphasis is placed on the development of an integrated, automatic optimization-simulation design tool that does not rely on the designer's experience and interpretation. Testing results based on the design of heating channels in an SMC compression molding tool show that the optimal design can be achieved with fewer data points than other methods, such as factorial design. The efficiency of the ANN method would be greater as the number of design variables grows.

    Notes: A three-dimensionally woven fabric is proposed as a standard reference material for permeability characterization. The 3-D woven fabric requires care in cutting and handling, although it is more robust than 2-D woven or braided fabrics. If prepared carefully, the permeability of the 3-D woven fabric can be measured reproducibly within 15% in either radial flow or saturated 1-D flow geometries. The material was characterized for permeability in radial, unsaturated and saturated 1-D, and through-thickness flow geometries. The transient results demonstrated the importance of structural heterogeneity on the unsaturated flow behavior, and agree qualitatively with a simplistic model of flow in heterogeneous unsaturated porous media. The effects of heterogeneity were manifested in the proposed SRM by an increasing trend in the “unsaturated permeability.” Experiments were also conducted with a random mat that displayed transient flows dominated by wicking. The effects of wicking on the macroscopic flow behavior were manifested by transients in the “unsaturated permeability” in which a decreasing trend was observed.

    Notes: This paper is concerned with the use of two thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers (TLCPs), HX1000 and Vectra B950, to reinforce a thermoplastic matrix of polypropylene (PP). The goal was to pregenerate the optimal TLCP reinforcement in PP and then process the material at a lower temperature than the melting point of the TLCP to form a composite structure. Specifically, strands of the blend were produced using a dual extrusion process, which resulted in the formation of axially continuous TLCP fibrils within the PP matrix. It was found that the mechanical properties of the strands were greatly improved by increased draw ratio and that optimal reinforcement, as predicted by the rule of mixtures, could be achieved. Initial studies indicated that injection molding and sheet extrusion of the pelletized strands caused the TLCP phase to agglomerate and deform, which resulted in a reduction of the mechanical property enhancement. However, the TLCP fibrillar morphology in the pregenerated strands was maintained during compression molding, which resulted in uniaxial composites with properties equal to or greater than properties of the strands. In addition, composites were made using compression molding in which strands were randomly oriented prior to consolidation to show the limits of properties possible in composites produced from the pregenerated strands. It was found that this process could be used to produce composites in which the mechanical properties were isotropic in the plane of the sample and approached the properly limits predicted by composite theory. Additionally, it was found that many of the mechanical properties of the VB/PP materials were greatly enhanced by the addition of a maleated PP throughout the composite forming process.

    Notes: Gas permeation and creep deformation of a commercial prepreg, which exhibits viscoelastic characteristics, were investigated as a function of time, temperature, and consolidation pressure. Experiments using a prepreg stack demonstrated that the material exhibited a linear viscoelastic bulk deformation under vacuum/autoclave pressure and furthermore, the in-plane gas flow exhibited non-Darcian flow behavior with a permeation hysteresis. This behavior was viewed and analyzed by two viscoelastic relaxation processes: (1) bulk dimensional relaxation, and (2) microscopic pore structure rearrangement. A modified standard linear solid (SLS) viscoelastic model was used to interpret the creep compliance and dynamic gas permeability utilizing two independent relaxation parameters. By visual investigation of pore sizes and their distribution, air permeation was found to take place mostly through the interlaminar porosity network for the prepreg system examined.

    Notes: The aim of this study is to determine the fracture toughness of phenolic resin and its composite. Fracture tests on phenolic resin resulted in a fracture toughness close to values quoted for unmodified epoxy resins. Composite specimens of glass fiber reinforced phenolic were also tested. The interlaminar fracture toughness in both mode I and mode II failures was determined. The mode I initiation values were lower than the neat resin's toughness. Mode I propagation values were strongly influenced by fiber bridging. The mechanism of fiber bridging was found to be sensitive to specimen dimensions. The effect of fiber bridging on the mode I analysis is discussed. Fiber bridging was also evident in mode II failures. Two different geometries were used for the mode II tests (end loaded split and end notched flexure); a correlation between the results from the two geometries is made.

    Notes: The fracture performances of three short glass fiber-reinforced polymer composite systems, PET with 30 wt% glass, nylon 6/6 with 33% glass fibers, and a nylon 6 and 6/6 copolymer with 33% glass, have been characterized using both standard mechanical characterization and fracture mechanics. These results have been compared to fracture tests of an experimental chair base. None of the characterizing techniques was successful in predicting the chair base fracture performances of the materials when the tests were conducted on standard 3-mm-thick test specimens. When larger specimens with comparable morphologies to the chair base were tested, the fracture mechanics tests compared favorably to the chair base fracture tests while the tensile test results were inconsistent in their predictive ability. The findings emphasize the importance of testing laboratory specimens that are similar in morphology to the final part and suggest that fracture mechanics methodologies can be used in materials selection of glass reinforced systems for structural applications. However, for quantitative design, it is necessary to address issues regarding the nature of the inherent flaw in the finished parts.

    Notes: The response of the aramid reinforced aluminum-epoxy-laminate to uniaxial and biaxial fatigue loading has been investigated. The fracture process in the laminates propagates mainly in the form of cracks in aluminum layers, delaminations between the resin-rich and fiber-rich prepreg layers, splitting in prepreg layers and fiber fracture. Ultrasonic microscopy has been used to evaluate the shape and size of the damage zone. The ultrasonic images have been calibrated by means of SEM and optical microscopy of the laminates with sequential removal of the layers. Microscopic examination reveals a direct correlation between delamination, fiber fracture, and fatigue crack growth in the aluminum layer. The results of this investigation strongly suggest that the laminate resistance to tension-tension biaxial fatigue is superior to that under uniaxial loading conditions.

    Notes: A finite element simulation is proposed for the shaping of glass fiber fabric. The overall mechanical behavior of the fabric is obtained by combining the tensile behavior of a single thread and the current position of threads in the fabric. The constitutive model for a single thread in tension is based on a statistical approach and is identified using tensile tests. Shear and tensile tests have been carried out on fabric specimens to demonstrate that the behavior of the fabric mainly results from the contribution of each thread, the sliding between fiber threads having a small effect on the energy for the deformation mechanism of these fabrics. A numerical model for the shaping process is obtained based on a finite element approach using three- and four-node membrane shell elements. The formulation accounts for the large displacements and large strains involved in the process as well as the mechanical behavior. A drawing simulation is presented in the case of an hemispherical punch. The comparison with experimental results obtained in this case shows good agreement.

    Notes: A simple lab-scale weaving method was used to produce multidirectional fiber preforms to improve the delamination resistance and damage tolerance of composites. Mechanical properties measured in this study included short-beam shear strength and damage tolerance of 2-D and 3-D woven composites. The constituents of fiber and matrix in these composites are Kevlar-29 (Du Pont) and Epon 828 (Shell Chemical Co.) epoxy. Attention was directed to the differentiation of deformation and failure mechanisms in these composites as a function of material parameters and loading conditions. The sequence of failure mechanisms differ between 2-D and 3-D composites. Results indicated that 3-D woven composites exhibited higher shear strength than 2-D woven composites. Also, 3-D composites absorbed more impact energy than 2-D composites. Failure mechanisms of composites subjected to repeated impacts were observed intermittently by using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. The failure of 2-D composites was due to a combination of shear and tensile mode, but in 3-D composites the failure was dominated by tensile mode.

    Notes: An investigation into the effect of isothermal aging on the development of transverse cracks in cross-ply laminates of two high temperature composite systems was performed. The composite materials investigated were BASF X5260/640-800 and DuPont Avimid K/IM6. Changes in the glass transition temperature, composite weight loss, crack density, and mode I intralaminar fracture toughness were monitored during isothermal aging in air at 177°C for up to 2232 h. The two laminate configurations used in this study include two variations of the generic cross-ply configuration [02/90n]s, in which n equals 1 and 2. The results of this investigation show that a layer of degraded material forms at the surface of the X5260/640-800 bismaleimide laminates and that the thickness of the degraded layer increases with aging time. After 744 h of aging, transverse cracks form in the surface plies and an increasing crack density evolves as aging time is increased; however, transverse cracks do not form in the inner 90° ply groups with aging during the time period investigated. The Avimid K/IM6 thermoplastic polyimide laminates, which show evidence of cracking prior to aging, do not exhibit any significant change in crack density with aging. The results of the aging experiments also show that the bismaleimide system exhibits a weight loss of 1.5% and an increase in glass transition temperature from 250°C to 300°C after 2232 h of aging at 177°C, while the thermoplastic polyimide system shows a weight loss of only 0.05% and an increase in glass transition temperature from 280 to 285°C after 2232 h. Changes in the resistance to crack formation are also seen in these materials during aging. The mode I intralaminar fracture toughness, a measure of resistance to transverse crack formation, shows a 50% decrease after aging for 2232 h for the bismaleimide system, while the behavior exhibited by the thermoplastic polyimide shows little evidence of a reduction.

    Notes: Crystallization from the melt of nylon 66 in the presence of carbon fiber, aramid fiber, or nucleating agent was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and hot stage microscopy. The use of the nucleating agent resulted in an increase in crystallization rate and a decrease of induction time under both isothermal and nonisothermal conditions. The fibers were found to behave like a giant nucleating site producing a uniform transcrystalline layer having morphology and crystallization kinetics different from those of the bulk matrix. The influence of the cooling rate on the process of nonisothermal crystallization was analyzed, and the values of activation energy, calculated from the cooling rate - crystallization temperature relationship, appeared to be higher for the nucleated and for the reinforced nylon compared with that of the neat nylon 66. This implied that the presence of fibers or nucleating agent led to the development of a more ordered structure, which required a larger amount of energy for crystallization.

    Notes: Dielectric studies in epoxy and epoxy composites, containing different volume fractions of three different dielectric fillers, have been performed using the impedance bridge method for the high frequency region, 102 to 105 Hz, and the d.c. transient current method for the low frequency region, 10-4 to 10-1 Hz. It has been observed that, in the high frequency region, the dielectric constants of the epoxy composites increased with the addition of the dielectric filler and with the increase of the dielectric constant of the filler. The intensity of the β-relaxation was reduced for the composites compared to an equal volume of epoxy, owing to the decrease in the concentration of the diester segments in the composites. From the low frequency data, the epoxy and epoxy composites behaved more debye-like with increasing temperature. Also, the dielectric loss factor increased, but the thermal activation energy value to relaxation decreased two to four times in going from the unfilled to filled materials, which was thought to be attributed to Maxwell-Wagner buildup of interfacial charges at the epoxy/fillers interfaces.
