    Notizen: In this paper the integrated solution approach, the penalty function approach and the solenoidal approach for the finite element solution of the stationary Navier-Stokes equations are compared. It is shown that both the penalty function approach and the solenoidal approach compare favourably to the integrated solution method. For fine meshes the solenoidal approach appears to be the cheapest method.

    Notizen: In this paper a fully explicit finite element method (FEFEM) is presented for solving steady incompressible viscous flow problems. This full explicitness is achieved by combining the multiplier (or augmented Lagrangian) method with a pseudo-time-iteration method. FEFEM needs no global matrix at all and is of great advantage to large-scale problems because they can be solved within the limit of core memory.The optimum choice of a time increment and a penalty parameter is discussed and the driven cavity flow at a Reynolds number of 1000 is computed with a refined mesh (60 × 60 elements).

    Notizen: A numerical and an experimental study of the flow of an incompressible fluid in a polar cavity is presented. The experiments included flow visualization, in two perpendicular planes, and quantitative measurements of the velocity field by a laser Doppler anemometer. Measurements were done for two ranges of Reynolds numbers; about 60 and about 350. The stream function-vorticity form of the governing equations was approximated by upwind or central finite-differences. Both types of finite-difference approximations were solved by a multi-grid method. Numerical solutions were computed on a sequence of grids and the relative accuracy of the solutions was studied. Our most accurate numerical solutions had an estimated error of 0.1 per cent and 1 per cent for Re = 60 and Re = 350, respectively. It was also noted that the solution to the second order finite difference equations was more accurate, compared to the solution to the first order equations, only if fine enough meshes were used. The possibility of using extrapolations to improve accuracy was also considered. Extrapolated solutions were found to be valid only if solutions computed on fine enough meshes were used. The numerical and the experimental results were found to be in very good agreement.

    Notizen: The problem under investigation is that of fluid flow within an enclosed rectangular cavity. It is assumed that one wall is maintained at a constant temperature T1 (hot wall) and the other wall is maintained at a constant temperature T0 (cold wall). At the remaining walls, two separate cases are studied. In the first, an adiabatic boundary condition is assumed. That is, the normal derivative of the temperature function is assumed to be 0. In the second, it is assumed the temperature varies linearly from T0 to T1.The purpose of this paper is the application of a second order numerical technique to the problem of fluid flow within a heated closed cavity. The method is a modification of a method developed by Shay1 and applied to the driven cavity problem. In order to test the viability of this technique, it was decided to extend the technique to the problem of natural convection in a square. Jones2 proposed that this problem is suitable for testing techniques that may be applied to a wide range of practical problems such as reactor insulation, cooling of radioactive waste containers, solar energy collection and others.3The technique makes use of second-order finite difference approximations to all derivatives in the governing equations. Furthermore, second-order approximations are also used to determine boundary vorticities and, when the adiabatic boundary condition is used, for the boundary temperatures as well. In some works, where second-order approximations are used at interior points, second-order boundary approximations have been sacrificed in favour of a more stable, but first-order boundary approximation.The current approximations are generated by writing the unknown value of a function at a given interior node as a linear combination of unknown function values at all of the neighbouring nodes. Then the function values at these neighbouring nodes are expanded in a Taylor series about the given node. Through appropriate regrouping of terms and the use of the equations to the solved, constraints are imposed on the coefficients of the linear combination to yield a second-order approximation. As it turns out, there are more unknowns than constraints and, as a result, we are left with some freedom in choosing coefficients. In this work this freedom was used to choose coefficients in such a way as to maximize stability of the resulting system of equations. In other words, the approximations to the governing partial differential equation are individually determined at each point dependent on the direction of flow in order to generate the best possible stability. This idea is analogous to that used in the derivation of the upwind method. However, the current method is second-order accurate where the upwind method is only first-order accurate. Thus, what is generated is an easily implemented second-order method that yields a system of equations that has proved easy to solve.The system of equations is solved via the method of successive overrelaxation. The stability of the method is shown in the convergence for a wide range of Rayleigh numbers, Prandtl numbers and mesh sizes. Level curves of the stream, vorticity and temperature functions are provided for Rayleigh numbers (Ra) as large as 100,000, Prandtl numbers (Pr) as small as 0.0001, and mesh sizes as small as 0.0125. Values of the Nusselt number have also been calculated through the use of Simpson's rule, and a second order approximation to the normal derivative of the temperature along the cold wall. Comparisons are made with other current works to aid in the verification of this methods' accuracy and also with the first-order upwind method to demonstrate superiority over the first-order method.

    Notizen: Computational difficulties arise in the non-linear free-surface problem for water waves both at large amplitudes when the crest becomes nearly singular and at small amplitudes when the wave is very close to the alternative uniform flow solution. Since the limiting wavelengths for small amplitude waves are known from the Stokes linearized theory, these are used in checking results for finite-amplitude programs. When Southwell and Vaisey1 first tried this, their methods gave an unexplained overestimate, by 6 per cent, of the limiting wavelength. This paper shows how coarse mesh effects can create such an overestimate, gives very accurate solutions at small amplitudes and considers accuracy in relation to the mesh for short and long waves.

    Notizen: A numerical procedure was developed to solve the two-dimensional and axisymmetric incompressible laminar boundary layer equations using the semi-discrete Galerkin finite element method. Linear Lagrangian, quadratic Lagrangian, and cubic Hermite interpolating polynomials were used for the finite element discretization; the first-order, the second-order backward difference approximation, and the Crank-Nicolson method were used for the system of non-linear ordinary differential equations; the Picard iteration and the Newton-Raphson technique were used to solve the resulting non-linear algebraic system of equations. Conservation of mass is treated as a constraint condition in the procedure; hence, it is integrated numerically along the solution line while marching along the time-like co-ordinate. Among the numerical schemes tested, the Picard iteration technique used with the quadratic Lagrangian polynomials and the second-order backward difference approximation case turned out to be the most efficient to achieve the same accuracy. The advantages of the method developed lie in its coarse grid accuracy, global computational efficiency, and wide applicability to most situations that may arise in incompressible laminar boundary layer flows.

    Notizen: Many problems of applied oceanography and environmental science demand the solution of the momentum, mass and energy equations on physical domains having curving coastlines. Finite-difference calculations representing the boundary as a step function may give inaccurate results near the coastline where simulation results are of greatest interest for numerous applications. This suggests the use of methods which are capable of handling the problem of boundary curvature.This paper presents computational results for the shallow water equations on a circular ring of constant depth, employing the concept of boundary fitted grids (BFG) for an accurate representation of the boundary. All calculations are performed on a rectangle in the transformed plane using a mesh with square grid spacing. Comparisons of the simulations of transient normal mode oscillations and analytic solutions are shown, demonstrating that this technique yields accurate results in situations (provided that there is a reasonable choice of grid) involving a curved boundary. The software developed allows application to any two-dimensional area, regardless of the complexity of the geometry.Simulation runs were made with two co-ordinate systems. For the first system, the grid point distribution was obtained from polar co-ordinates. For the second one, grid point positions were calculated numerically, solving Poisson's equation. It was found that small variations in the metric coefficients do not deteriorate the accuracy of the simulation results.Moreover, comparisons of surface elevation and velocity components at grid points near the inner and outer radii obtained from an x-y Cartesian grid model with the BFG simulation were made. The former model produced inacccuracies at grid points near boundaries, and, owing to the large number of mesh points used to yield the necessary fine resolution, the computation time was found to be a factor of three higher.

    Notizen: The paper is concerned with stability and accuracy of an nth order Lagrangian family of finite element steady-state solutions of the diffusion-convection equation, and furthermore is concerned with the stability and the accuracy of on mth kind Hermitian family of finite element solutions. We discuss the stability of the numerical solution based on the fact that the characteristic finite element solution can be expressed approximately as a rational function of cell Peclet number Pec ( = uh/k). Moreover, it is shown that by eliminating derivatives and by using the interpolation method over elements a stable solution is obtained over the domain independent of Pec for P1,3, and for P2,5 the stable solution is obtained for Pec less than 44.4.

    Notizen: The random vortex method of Chorin1 provides a numerical simulation of high-Reynolds number flow in two dimensions. The method can be used to model the viscous interaction of wind with a surface-mounted obstacle of arbitrary cross-section. In this paper the method has been used to investigate the flow of wind over common building shapes; an inlet profile is chosen to represent the stationary aspects of the atmospheric boundary layer. The evolution of flow over a short time-interval after flow initialization is depicted, and a mean value of pressure coefficient, Cp, is calculated over the building perimeter. Some comparison is made with published wind-tunnel measurements for the case of a surface-mounted square-section block and for a building model with 10° roof pitch.

    Notizen: We have studied the problem of calculating Green's functions in three dimensional hydrodynamic gravity wave problems. A number of new expressions for these functions are presented for both finite and infinite depths. Various techniques for accelerating the convergence of some infinite series in these expressions are investigated and compared with the normal methods of evaluation. A significant improvement in the efficiency of the calculation is found using the results described in this paper.

    Notizen: The classical potential formulation of inviscid transonic flows is modified to account for non-isentropic effects. The density is determined in terms of the speed as well as the pressure, which in turn is calculated from a second-order mixed-type equation derived via differentiating the momentum equations.The present model differs in general from the exact inviscid Euler equations since the flow is assumed irrotational. On the other hand, since the shocks are not isentropic, they are weaker and are placed further upstream compared to the classical potential solution. Furthermore, the streamline leaving the aerofoil does not necessarily bisect the trailing edge.Results for the present conservative calculations are presented for non-lifting and lifting aerofoils at subsonic and transonic speeds and compared to potential and Euler solutions.

    Notizen: An inverse method is presented which accurately determines the pressure distribution for assigned wall shear in a two-dimensional, laminar, incompressible boundary layer. The method reformulates the mechul function scheme of Cebeci and Keller to produce a stable solution in the marching direction and to increase accuracy in the normal direction. In the reformulation a modified pressure gradient parameter variation in the normal direction is used in conjunction with three-point backward differences for streamwise derivatives and fourth-order accurate splines for normal derivatives. The resulting spline-finite difference equations are solved by Newton-Raphson iteration together with partial pivoting. Numerical solutions are presented for self-similar and non self-similar flows and compared with published results.

    Notizen: We model the forming process as a fluid flow. A finite element program, FIDAP, which analyses flow problems, was used to calculate velocity and strain rates at points throughout the material during the deformation process. This allows predictions to be made on the shape and quality of the resulting part. The stress-strain relation we used models the plastic flow of metals (Bingham fluids). The FEM approximation of such a fluid is tested by comparing results for a simple analytical example. In forming processes provision must be made for friction between dye and workpiece, and the program was modified accordingly. Two classical ring forming simulations are compared to published results.

    Notizen: The unsteady frictional flow of a compressible fluid generated in a long pipeline after an accidental rupture is of considerable interest to the offshore gas industry. It answers several important questions concerning safety and pollution, e.g. the flow rate at the broken pipe end.Laboratory tests cannot simulate the rather complex phenomenon satisfactorily. The problem is highly non-linear and no general analytical solution is yet known.In this study, based on computational fluid dynamics, the simplifying assumptions of isothermal and low Mach number flow often applied in the case of unsteady compressible flows in pipelines, have not been used.Owing to the choking condition (Ma=1) which prevails for some time at the broken end. and the cumulative effect of friction over the 145 km long pipeline, we obtain (∂p/∂x)t→-∞. This analytically established singularity leads to numerical difficulties which seriously affect the accuracy. For short tubes (such as shock tubes) this negative feature is much less severe. Special procedures were necessary to keep the accuracy within the chosen limit of 1 per cent.

    Notizen: This paper gives the results of an application of the SWEs (shallow water equations) to a part of the Hamburg harbour area, which is a complex flow domain, using the BFG approach, outlined in Part I. The results of a grid doubling procedure generating the desired computational grid from a coarse initial mesh are also presented. A second class of problems which is addressed, demands time-dependent co-ordinate systems. The problems which are solved are the free surface problem for a moving wave which eventually breaks and for a wave which is reflected by the solid walls of a rectangular basin.

    Notizen: The present paper reports on a modified pressure implicit predictor corrector type scheme for solving the flow governing equations, in which a consistent formulation is combined with a multi-grid solver for the pressure correction. In addition a parabolic sublayer (PSL) approach for the treatment of the flow in the vicinity of solid walls is critically evaluated in terms of accuracy and computational efficiency. The lid-driven cavity flow is chosen as the test case and results are presented for Reynolds numbers ranging from 100 to 1000. Predictions with the proposed scheme indicate substantial computational savings and fairly good agreement when compared with previous work. The PSL approach reduces the computing time, but with increasing Reynolds numbers the accuracy of the solutions tends to deteriorate.

    Notizen: In this paper the generation of general curvilinear co-ordinate systems for use in selected two-dimensional fluid flow problems is presented. The curvilinear co-ordinate systems are obtained from the numerical solution of a system of Poisson equations. The computational grids obtained by this technique allow for curved grid lines such that the boundary of the solution domain coincides with a grid line. Hence, these meshes are called boundary fitted grids (BFG). The physical solution area is mapped onto a set of connected rectangles in the transformed (computational) plane which form a composite mesh. All numerical calculations are performed in the transformed plane. Since the computational domain is a rectangle and a uniform grid with mesh spacings Δξ = Δη = 1 (in two-dimensions) is used, the computer programming is substantially facilitated. By means of control functions, which form the r.h.s. of the Poisson equations, the clustering of grid lines or grid points is governed. This allows a very fine resolution at certain specified locations and includes adaptive grid generation. The first two sections outline the general features of BFGs, and in section 3 the general transformation rules along with the necessary concepts of differential geometry are given. In section 4 the transformed grid generation equations are derived and control functions are specified. Expressions for grid adaptation arc also presented. Section 5 briefly discusses the numerical solution of the transformed grid generation equations using sucessive overrelaxation and shows a sample calculation where the FAS (full approximation scheme) multigrid technique was employed. In the companion paper (Part II), the application of the BFG method to selected fluid flow problems is addressed.

    Notizen: Linearized multidimensional flow in a gas centrifuge can be described away from the ends by Onsager's pancake equation. However a rotating annulus results in a slightly different set of boundary conditions from the usual symmetry at the axis of rotation. The problem on an annulus becomes ill-posed and requires some special attention. Herein we treat axially linear inner and outer rotor temperature distributions and velocity slip. An existence condition for a class of non-trivial, one-dimensional solutions is given. New exact solutions in the infinite bowl approximation have been derived containing terms that are important at finite gap width and non-vanishing velocity slip. The usual one-dimensional, axially symmetric solution is obtained as a limit. Our previously reported finite element algorithm has been extended to treat this new class of problems. Effects of gap width, temperature and slip conditions are illustrated. Lastly, we report on the compressible, finite length, circular Couette flow for the first time.

Pitch to diameter ratios of 1·5 and 2·0 are considered for cylinders in equilateral triangular and square arrangements. Reynolds numbers studied range from 100 to 400, and a Prandtl number of 0·7 is used. Velocity vector fields, streamline patterns, vorticity, pressure and temperature contours, local and average Nusselt numbers, pressure and shear stress distributions around the cylinder walls and drag coefficients are presented. The results obtained agree well with available experimental and numerical data.

    Notizen: A numerical method is developed to solve the coupled unsteady laminar momentum and thermal boundary layers over a circular cylinder impulsively started from rest. The present non-iterative finite difference method, which requires relatively fewer grid points in the reversed flow region than any other method, can easily handle the separating boundary layer flows. The results indicate that the present method has accuracy comparable with the earlier methods, while consuming computer time approximately one order of magnitude less.The present numerical method allowed investigation of the effect of buoyancy parameter on the starting boundary layer. The time-dependent behaviour of the boundary layer is studied in terms of the appearance of the singularity, the distribution of skin friction and wall heat flux, and the wall position of the inflection point of the velocity profile. The transient as well as buoyancy-dependent patterns of the streamlines and isotherms are also studied.

    Notizen: The boundary integral equation method constitutes the basis of a number of computer programs used for the solution of wave-obstacle interaction problems. For the case of obstacles in a constant depth fluid, the method assumes that the velocity potential at any point in the fluid may be represented by a distribution of Green's function sources over the immersed surface of the obstacle. Application of the obstacle kinematic boundary condition gives rise to an integral equation which may be solved, using numerical discretization, for the unknown source strength distribution function. Subsequent evaluation of the discretized velocity potential permits evaluation of the hydrodynamic interaction parameters.A series of numerical solutions have been carried out for a range of substantially rectangular obstacles, in a two-dimensional domain, using varying levels of immersed profile discretization. The results, presented in the form of fixed and floating mode wave reflection and transmission, together with the motion response of the floating obstacle, demonstrate the significant sensitivity of the evaluated parameters to variations in the level of discretization.

    Notizen: In strip theory analysis the vessel is represented by a series of 2D transverse sections. For 2D arbitrary-shaped sections either floating in the free surface or totally submerged, a higher-order boundary element analysis has been developed to permit determination of the associated radiation and diffraction velocity potentials.In this paper the formulation of the cited interaction problems is reworked to reflect the new capability of permitting curved boundary elements to represent the geometry and a higher-order functional behaviour of the unknown velocity potentials over that geometry. This is in direct contrast to the usual technique of using straight-line geometric panels and invariant behaviour of the required potentials over these simple panels.Applications to representative sections of floating ships and the fully submerged pontoon section of a semi-submersible are presented. Within these applications the results of the standard Frank close-fit technique, of linear panels and constant behaviour, are compared with different combinations of higher-order representations of the geometry and the determined velocity potentials.Conclusions regarding the advantages and limitations of the procedures developed are discussed.

    Notizen: Finite element predictions of two-dimensional laminar natural convection in a partially divided rectangular cavity at high Rayleigh number are presented. The walls are differentially heated, the horizontal surfaces are insulated and the cavity contains a partial vertical divider which is centrally located and whose height is varied. Detailed results are presented for an aluminium half-divider in water for Rayleigh number up to 1011 and compared directly with recent experiments in a cavity of aspect ratio 1/2. The predicted flow and heat transfer are in good agreement with the measurements and confirm the existence of a high Rayleigh number regime with characteristic behaviour that differs significantly from that found at lower Rayleigh number. In addition, the effects of the divider height, the divider conductivity, the fluid Prandtl number and the cavity aspect ratio are studied. The results show that a direct simulation of the complex flow and heat transfer that occurs in partially divided cavities is possible for realistic physical conditions.

    Notizen: A numerical method for the solution of the vector potential/vorticity vector formulation of the transient, fully three-dimensional Navier-Stokes energy and continuity equations has been applied to simulate the development of natural convective flow within a ‘box’ after a sudden temperature change on a vertical portion of the wall. Only one cavity size has been considered, this having a vertical height of three times its width and a horizontal length of six times its width. A single heated rectangular hot spot or ‘element’ on an otherwise adiabatic wall is centred between the vertical end walls. The opposite vertical wall is held at the intial fluid temperature, and all other walls are assumed to be adiabatic. Fluid properties have been assumed constant except for the density change with temperature that gives rise to the buoyancy force. The numerical method is an underrelaxation Gauss-Seidel method using finite differencing at each time step. Solutions have been obtained for a Prandtl number of 0.71, for Rayleigh numbers, based on the width, of between 0 and 100000 and for a number of heated element locations and sizes.

    Notizen: This paper describes the characteristics of small-amplitude waves generated by a sinusoidally oscillating, inclined paddle-type wavemaker operating in a constant-depth channel. Two-dimensional, linearized potential flow is assumed. A semi-analytical method, the boundary collocation method, is used to establish the relationship between wave amplitude and paddle stroke. The numerical results are compared with the numerical results of the boundary integral equation method. It is found that the boundary collocation method is simpler and more flexible to implement and faster to compute. In addition, the numerical results are in reasonably good agreement with the laboratory experimental data. For the vertical wavemaker, which is a special case of the inclined wavemaker, an analytical series solution can be found. By using the boundary collocation method and the boundary integral equation method to solve the vertical wavemaker problem and comparing the results with the analytical series solution, it is found that the boundary collocation method yields a solution which is much more accurate than that from the boundary integral equation method. Finally, the relationships between wave amplitude and paddle stroke are established for different inclinations of the paddle-type wavemaker, based on the boundary collocation method.

The methods are based on modifying the L2-norm of the. residual and a related approximation to the H1-norm of the residual. The effect of the additional terms in these residual functionals is to introduce a dissipative effect proportional to the solution gradient. This acts to stabilize the solution for non-linear hyperbolic problems which generate shocks. Numerical results for a one-dimensional nozzle and shock tube problem demonstrate the accuracy and stability of the method. Results are for an implicit scheme and calculations for linear, quadratic and cubic elements are given.

    Notizen: In the numerical solutions of fluid flow problems in moving co-ordinates, an additional conservation equation, namely the space conservation law, has to be solved simultaneously with the mass, momentum and energy conservation equations. In this paper a method of incorporating the space conservation law into a finite volume procedure is proposed and applied to a number of test cases. The results show that the method is efficient and produces accurate results for all grid velocities and time steps for which temporal accuracy suffices. It is also demonstrated, by analysis and test calculations, that not satisfying the space conservation law in a numerical solution procedure introduces errors in the form of artificial mass sources. These errors can be made negligible only by choosing a sufficiently small time step, which sometimes may be smaller than required by the temporal discretization accuracy.

    Notizen: We consider finite element methods for vorticity formulations of viscous incompressible flows. In two-dimensional settings the familiar streamfunction-vorticity formulation is examined. We focus on its accuracy, especially when using low-order elements, and on its use with a variety of boundary conditions and in multiply connected domains. In three dimensions the velocity-vorticity formulation is shown to be preferable, and a promising algorithm using this formulation is presented. We close by considering the recovery of the pressure field once the streamfunction or velocity fields are known. In particular we describe and analyse an algorithm for recovering the pressure which is based on well known methods for the primitive variable formulation and which requires no boundary conditions on the pressure at solid walls.

    Notizen: Two reduced forms of the Euler equations which allow spatial marching in subsonic flow regions are investigated for solving the inviscid blunt body problem. An analysis of the eignevalues to determine the properties of the steady and unsteady forms of the governing equations is performed. The steady forms of both the thin shock layer equations and the pressure gradient splitting method are appropriate for a marching solution technique. Numerical results from the thin layer equations are less accurate, and the suitability of this approach in a global iteration procedure is questioned as the analysis shows information is not transmitted upstream. The pressure gradient splitting method gives more accurate results with a single downstream march and appears better suited for use in a global iteration procedure to obtain the complete solution of the Euler equations. Further evaluation of the pressure gradient splitting method shows that it can be readily applied over a range of Mach numbers, and the accuracy of the results is only slightly dependent on the free-stream Mach number.

    Notizen: A numerical study is made of the unsteady two-dimensional laminar flow of an incompressible fluid over a periodically grooved wall. Two independent finite difference techniques are employed. One is based on the vorticity-stream function and the other on the vorticity-velocity (i.e. induction law) formulation. The fluid motion is initiated impulsively from rest and is assumed to be spatially periodic in the streamwise direction. The numerical formulations are derived in detail. The generation of vorticity at the solid surface is modelled differently in the two approaches, and this is found to play an important role in determining the surface pressure distribution and the drag coefficient. The flow field is examined during the early transient phase of development, during which the greatest changes occur. Results are presented for a moderate Reynolds number (based on groove depth) equal to 100. It is found that the vorticity-stream function approach does not produce a spatially periodic wall pressure distribution, and therefore global conservation of total vorticity is not achieved. This results in substantial errors in the predictions for the drag coefficient. These deficiencies are not found in the results obtained by the vorticity-velocity formulation.

    Notizen: The use of numerical techniques to augment experimentally collected temperature data of electrical components is illustrated. FIDAP, a finite element CFD code, is used to generate the numerical results. Comparisons of the numerical results with experimental data of HaCohen, experimentally derived correlations of Wirtz and Dykshoorn and numerical results of Heaton et al. are given. A discussion of modelling techniques, mesh refinement, numerical error and stability is presented with suggestions for improvement of flow models. The results generated by FIDAP, using 2D models, compare favourably (to within 10%) with the experimental data of HaCohen. The results indicate the possibility of augmenting experimental data collection with numerical results, at least in the regions of laminar and low turbulent flow.

    Notizen: The turbulent momentum transport phenomena in a two-dimensional mixing layer are investigated numerically by a discrete vortex method. The numerical model and calculations are verified through a comparison with existing numerical simulations and experimental measurements. The main emphasis is placed on the exploration of the detailed time-dependent instantaneous local momentum fluctuations and on the comparison of numerical results with available experimental measurements. The current simulations confirm qualitatively the various trends in the turbulent momentum flux and fluctuating components of the velocity in the mixing layer found with several experimental results. The study shows that similarity exists in turbulent momentum quantities along the axial direction of the mixing layer. The calculations also show a definite correlation between the passage of a large-scale structure and a burst in the turbulent momentum flux. The probability density functions of the fluctuating quantities are shown to be mostly Gaussian-like, with only a few exceptions.

    Notizen: Rational strategies are considered for the specification of the intermediate boundary condition at an inflow boundary where process splitting (fractional steps) is adopted in solving the advection-dispersion equation. Three lowest-order methods are initially considered and evaluation is based on comparisons with an analytical solution. For flow and dispersion parameter ranges typical of rivers and estuaries, the given boundary condition for the complete advection-dispersion equation at the end of the complete time step provides a satisfactory estimate of the intermediate boundary value. This was further confirmed by the development and evaluation of two higher-order methods. These required non-centred discrete approximations for spatial derivatives, which offset any special advantages from the higher truncation error order.

    Notizen: Steady 2D Euler flow computations have been performed for a wind tunnel section, designed for research on transonic shock wave-boundary layer interaction. For the discretization of the steady Euler equations, an upwind finite volume technique has been applied. The solution method used is collective, symmetric point Gauss-Seidel relaxation, accelerated by non-linear multigrid. Initial finest grid solutions have been obtained by nested iteration. Automatic grid adaptation has been applied for obtaining sharp shocks. An indication is given of the mathematical quality of four different boundary conditions for the outlet flow. Two transonic flow solutions with shock are presented: a choked and a non-choked flow. Both flow solutions show good shock capturing. A comparison is made with experimental results.

    Notizen: Numerical studies of turbulent flow in an axisymmetric 45° expansion combustor and bifurcated diffuser are presented. The Navier-Stokes equations incorporating a k-∊ model were solved in a non-orthogonal curvillinear co-ordinate system. A zonal grid method, wherein the flow field was divided into several subsections, was developed. This approach permitted different computational schemes to be used in the various zones. In addition, grid generation was made a more simple task. However, treatment of the zonal boundaries required special handling. Boundary overlap and interpolating techniques were used and an adjustment of the flow variables was required to assure conservation of mass flux. Three finite differencing methods - hybrid, quadratic upwind and skew upwind - were used to represent the convection terms. Results were compared with existing experimental data. In general, good agreement between predicted and measured values was obtained.

    Notizen: Preconditioning techniques based on incomplete Gaussian elimination for large, sparse, non-symmetric matrix systems are described. A certain level of fill-in may be specified in the incomplete factorizations. All methods considered may be applied to matrices with arbitrary sparsity patterns, for instance those associated with the general preprocessor algorithms or adaptive mesh techniques. The preconditioners have been combined with five conjugate gradient-like methods and tested on finite element discretized scalar convection-diffusion equations in 2D and 3D. It is found from numerical experiments that an amount of fill-in corresponding to about 50% of the number of original non-zero matrix entries is the optimal choice for this class of preconditioners. The preconditioners show almost no sensitivity to grid distortion. In problems with significantly variable coefficients or anisotropy the preconditioners stabilize the basic iterative schemes in addition to reducing the computational work substantially, mostly by more than 90%. The modified preconditioning technique, where fill-in is added on the main diagonal, performs in general better than the standard incomplete LU factorization, but is inferior to the latter in 3D problems and for matrix systems with complicated sparsity patterns.

    Notizen: A new method for the simulation of the translational and rotational motions of a system containing a sedimenting particle interacting with a neutrally buoyant particle has been developed. The method is based on coupling the quasi-static Stokes equations for the fluid with the rigid body equations of motion for the particles. The Stokes equations are solved at each time step with the boundary element method. The stresses are then integrated over the surface of each particle to determine the resultant forces and moments. These forces and moments are inserted into the rigid body equations of motion to determine the translational and rotational motions of the particles. Unlike many other simulation techniques, no restrictions are placed on the shape of the particles. Superparametric boundary elements are employed to achieve accurate geometric representations of the particles. The simulation method is able to predict the local fluid velocity, resolve the forces and moments exerted on the particles, and track the particle trajectories and orientations.

    Notizen: The analysis of wave propagation in computing domains where hyperbolic equations are approximated with finite differences has revealed surprising analogies between this subject and quantum mechanics. The first part of this paper consists of a review of the corresponding phenomena and of their description with known results from numerical analysis and wave propagation theory. We then introduce a new formalism, containing a finite difference analogue of the classical Schrodinger equation, which describes the ensemble of those phenomena. The validity of the new formalism is verified by its agreement with known theoretical results in numerical wave propagation (it contains in fact many of those results) as well as with new data obtained in numerical experiments with monochromatic waves which display properties similar to those of Schrödinger's wavefunction for the quantum mechanics description of the equivalent experiments with physical particles. While the results of this paper are derived in the context of wave propagation in computing domains, they remain applicable to similar aspects of wave propagation in other (physical) periodic structures.

    Notizen: A sharp interface problem arising in the flow of two immiscible fluids, slag and molten metal in a blast furnace, is formulated using a two-dimensional model and solved numerically. This problem is a transient two-phase free or moving boundary problem, the slag surface and the slag-metal interface being the free boundaries. At each time step the hydraulic potential of each fluid satisfies the Laplace equation which is solved by the finite element method. The ordinary differential equations determining the motion of the free boundaries are treated using an implicit time-stepping scheme. The systems of linear equations obtained by discretization of the Laplace equations and the equations of motion of the free boundaries are incorporated into a large system of linear equations. At each time step the hydraulic potential in the interior domain and its derivatives on the free boundaries are obtained simultaneously by solving this linear system of equations. In addition, this solution directly gives the shape of the free boundaries at the next time step. The implicit scheme mentioned above enables us to get the solution without handling normal derivatives, which results in a good numerical solution of the present problem. A numerical example that simulates the flow in a blast furnace is given.

    Notizen: In problems such as the computation of incompressible flows with moving boundaries, it may be necessary to solve Poisson's equation on a large sequence of related grids. In this paper the LU decomposition of the matrix A0 representing Poisson's equation discretized on one grid is used to efficiently obtain an approximate solution on a perturbation of that grid. Instead of doing an LU decomposition of the new matrix A, the RHS is perturbed by a Taylor expansion of A-1 about A0. Each term in the resulting series requires one ‘backsolve’ using the original LU.Tests using Laplace's equation on a square/rectangle deformation look promising; three and seven correction terms for deformations of 20% and 40% respectively yielded better than 1% accuracy.As another test, Poisson's equation was solved in an ellipse (fully developed flow in a duct) of aspect ratio 2/3 by perturbing about a circle; one correction term yielded better than 1% accuracy.Envisioned applications other than the computation of unsteady incompressible flow include: three-dimensional parabolic problems in tubes of varying cross-section, use of ‘elimination’ techniques other than LU decomposition, and the solution of PDEs other than Poisson's equation.

    Notizen: The objective of the paper is twofold. First we describe an upwind/central differencing method for solving the steady Navier-Stokes equations. The symmetric line relaxation method is used to solve the resulting algebraic system to achieve high computational efficiency. The grid spacings used in the calculations are determined from the triple-deck theory, in terms of Mach and Reynolds numbers and other flow parameters. Thus the accuracy of the numerical solutions is improved by comparing them with experimental, analytical and other computational results. Secondly we proceed to study numerically the shock wave/boundary layer interactions in detail, with special attention given to the flow separation. The concept of free interaction is confirmed. Although the separated region varies with Mach and Reynolds numbers, we find that the transverse velocity component behind the incident shock, which has not been identified heretofore, is also an important parameter. A small change of this quantity is sufficient to eliminate the flow separation entirely.

    Notizen: In a recent paper a generalized potential flow theory and its application to the solution of the Navier-Stokes equation are developed.1 The purpose of this comment is to show that the analysis presented in that paper is in general not correct. We note that the theoretical development of Reference 1 is in fact an extension - although not cited - of some work first done by Hawthorne for steady inviscid flow.2 Hawthorne's solution is correct, and his analysis, which we briefly describe, provides a useful introduction to this note.

    Notizen: A time-marching method is presented for the calculation of two-dimensional, high-speed channel flow, including the usually neglected terms of slope and bottom friction. Time-marching methods are potentially the most flexible means of calculating flow through geometrically complex channel passages, since they can readily deal with subcritical and supercritical flows. The adopted numerical scheme comes straight from gas flow computations in turbomachines. The flow is assumed to be fully mixed in the vertical direction, so that vertical variations may be neglected. Comparisons with other numerical solutions for various open channel configurations show that the proposed approach is a comparatively accurate, reliable and fast technique. It can be utilized for open channel designs.

    Notizen: The flow of steady incompressible viscous fluid rotating about the z-axis with angular velocity ω and moving with velocity u past a sphere of radius a which is kept fixed at the origin is investigated by means of a numerical method for small values of the Reynolds number Reω. The Navier-Stokes equations governing the axisymmetric flow can be written as three coupled non-linear partial differential equations for the streamfunction, vorticity and rotational velocity component. Central differences are applied to the partial differential equations for solution by the Peaceman-Rachford ADI method, and the resulting algebraic equations are solved by the ‘method of sweeps’.The results obtained by solving the non-linear partial differential equations are compared with the results obtained by linearizing the equations for very small values of Reω. Streamlines are plotted for Ψ = 0·05, 0·2, 0·5 for both linear and non-linear cases. The magnitude of the vorticity vector near the body, i.e. at z = 0·2, is plotted for Reω = 0·05, 0·24, 0·5. The correction to the Stokes drag as a result of rotation of the fluid is calculated.

    Notizen: A new method for solving elliptic difference equations is derived based on the strongly implicit method. This parametrized strongly implicit method has three free parameters which may be functions of the field's nodal point. The method has some resemblance to the SOR techniques, but in the present method the off-diagonal entries are also over-relaxed. The main application of this method is for transport equations such as those governing the fluid flow and heat transfer fields.
