Notes: Abstract Thermolysis of tetranuclear palladium clusters Pd4(μ-Q)4 Pd4(μ-Q)4(μ-O2CR)4 (Q=CPh2 or CO;R=Me, CMe3, Ph, CH2Cl or CF3) has been found to involve innersphere oxidation of carbene or carbonyl ligands during which an oxygen atom transfer occurs from the carboxylate group to the carbene or carbonyl ligand. The thermolysis of the carbonyl clusters gives rise to the products of CO2 insertion into the C–H bond of benzene or toluene used as solvents forming benzoic acid from benzene and a mixture of phenylacetic and toluic acids from toluene. The reaction of [Pd(OAc)2(PPh3)]2 with HCO2H includes the transfer of an O atom from formate ligand to the P atom and cleavage of the P-Ph bond accompanied by transfer of the Ph group from PPh3 ligand to the palladium atom. The structure of the complex formed, [Pd(μ-O2PPh2)(C6H5)(PPh3)]2, has been resolved by X-ray analysis.

Notes: Abstract The thermal oxidative stability of various ABS/PC compounds was studied by means of the chemiluminescence technique. Similarly to pure ABS, Irganox 1076 and Irganox MD 1024 perform as moderate antioxidants in ABS/PC and (ABS/PC + lubricant) blends. Neither Tinuvin 144, Irgaphos 168, nor their mixture affects the durability of the ABS/PC blend. At the same time, (Irgaphos 168 + Tinuvin 144) in combination with Irganoxes was found to provide a noticeable enhancement in durability to the (ABS/PC + lubricant) system. Titanium dioxide pigments by themselves have only a slight influence on the oxidative stability of the ABS/PC blend. Durability of the (ABS/PC + pigment) and (ABS/PC + lubricant) systems was found to be the same and the overall protective effect of Irganox 1076 was similar in both the (ABS/PC + lubricant) and the (ABS/PC + lubricant + pigment) systems. Certain modifiers significantly improve the durability of the ABS/PC compounds, although their function may differ in the systems with and without pigments.

Notes: Abstract The influence of lubricants, UV stabilizers, antioxidants, and metal deactivators on the resistance of ABS to thermal oxidation was studied by means of the chemiluminescence technique. Neither of the additives seems to affect significantly the induction period of oxidation. At the same time, the influence of various additives on the oxidation rate constant is remarkably different: the introduction of lubricants and UV stabilizers increases its value, while antioxidants and metal deactivators have the opposite effect. For the particular systems studied durability is decreased in samples containing the lubricant and UV stabilizers and increased in samples stabilized with the antioxidant and metal deactivator.

    Notes: Abstract 1-Acetyl-3-bromo-3-phenylazetidine (1), C11H12BrNO, has been synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic methods and single crystal X-ray analysis. It crystallizes in the space group P2 1/c with a = 8.633(1), b = 7.461(1), c = 17.204(1) Å, β = 98.403(7)°, V = 1096.2(2) Å3, Z = 4, D calc = 1.540 g cm−3. The azetidine ring is nearly planar since the four atoms are within ±0.039(5) Å of the mean square plane calculated for the heterocycle. The attempt to obtain a highly strained 2-azetine derivative from the above compound gave, surprisingly, 1-phenyl-2-(N-acetyl-N-formyl)-aminoethanone (2), C11H11NO3. This compound has been also characterized by spectroscopic methods and single crystal X-ray analysis. It crystallizes in the space group P212121, with a = 5.4719(3), b = 8.3205(6), c = 23.298(3) Å, V = 1060.7(2) Å3, Z = 4, D calc = 1.286 g cm−3. The aminoethanone residue is in a near planar conformation where the torsion angles are 7(2)° for N–C–C–=O and −173(2)° for N–C–C–C(Ph).

Notes: Abstract The thermal oxidative stability of various formulations based on emulsion-grade ABS was studied by the chemiluminescence technique. Emulsion products were found to be essentially less stable than ionic mass polymerization resins. Among the antioxidants studied, Santonox R is clearly more efficient than Irganox 1076 and Irganox 3114, and its superiority is reflected primarily in improved induction period values. The introduction of Tinuvin 770 and Tinuvin 328 UV stabilizers into emulsion resins does not change the durability of the products. In mixtures where both Irganox 1076 and UV stabilizers are present, a certain antagonistic effect was noted at high UV stabilizer concentrations.

Notes: Abstract A styrene/divinylbenzene copolymer has been used as precursor for making porous carbons with bimodal pore size distributions (i.e., with both microporosity and mesoporosity). Pretreatment of the as-received copolymer by mild oxidation in air, significantly increased the carbon yield after carbonization. Reactivity studies of the polymer-based chars to CO2 clearly show the influences of some important factors such as carbonization temperature, heating rate, soak time on char reactivities. Bimodal porous carbons were prepared by carbonization of the preoxidized styrene/divinylbenzene copolymer in N2, followed by activation in CO2 at different temperatures to different levels of burnoff. The pore structures of the porous carbons produced have been characterized by various techniques such as gas adsorption and mercury porosimetry. The surfaces of the porous carbons produced, and a commercial carbon adsorbent, have been modified with HNO3 and H2O2 treatment at various conditions. Characterization of the surface oxygen functionality, both quantitatively and qualitatively, has been achieved using techniques such as Linear Temperature Programed Desorption (LTPD) and selective neutralization of bases.

Notes: Abstract The oxidation of carbonado type synthesized polycrystalline diamonds produced from graphite together with catalytic Ni-Mo alloy doped with TiB2 and BNcub was investigated. It was found that the addition of these boron compounds increases the oxidation resistance of the carbonado type synthesized polycrystalline diamonds. The oxidation mechanism acting on the carbonado type synthesized polycrystalline diamonds and the role of boron compounds in increasing the resistance to the oxygen reaction are discussed.

Abstract: Zusammenfassung Die Kinetik der Bildung und Transformation von Calciumphosphat-Niederschlägen wurde bei 25°C untersucht.
Notes: Abstract The kinetics of the formation and transformation of calcium phosphate precipitates obtained by mixing equal volumes of solutions, 6×10−3 M in total calcium and/or total phosphate was investigated at 25°. The phosphate solutions were preadjusted to pH 7.4. Changes of the pH and turbidity of the solutions were followed simultaneously as a function of time. Precipitates were isolated at various time intervals and characterized by different physicochemical methods. Initially a precipitate with a molar Ca/P ratio of 1.5, amorphous to X-ray and electron diffraction was formed. IR spectra indicated the presence of PO 4 3− and HPO 4 2− ions. After a period of metastability, precipitation of a crystalline material within or upon the amorphous matter occurred. Twenty four hours after sample preparation the precipitates showed mainly the characteristics of octacalcium phosphate.

Notes: Abstract The effects of disodium ethane-1-hydroxy-1,1-diphosphonate (EHDP) on bone and serum chemistry were investigated in adult rabbits. EHDP was administered by subcutaneous injection at doses of 0.25, 2.5 and 10 mg/kg body weight/day for of 28 days. Blood samples were obtained weekly from each rabbit and serum levels of total calcium, ionized calcium, inorganic phosphate and alkaline phosphatase were determined. At the end of the treatment period all rabbits were sacrificed and the tibiae removed for chemical analysis and histological evaluation. The effect of EHDP administration on serum chemistry was both dose- and time-related. The highest of the three doses, 10 mg/kg/day, resulted in a time-related decrease in total serum calcium. This dose also caused a rapid but transient reduction in serum ionized calcium. The effect of EHDP on serum inorganic phosphate was biphasic. Administration of 2.5 mg/kg/day resulted in a time-related elevation in this parameter, whereas the 10 mg/kg/day dose resulted in a time-related hypophosphatemic response. There were no significant drug-related changes in tibial fat-free dry weight, ash weight, total calcium or total phosphorus values. However, administration of 2.5 and 10 mg/kg/day EHDP resulted in increased osteoid tissue as measured histologically. These results are compared with data from other EHDP studies, and discussed in relation to the maturity and growth-state of the experimental animals.

Notes: Summary A method is described for the isolation and purification of a sulphated glycopeptide from human supragingival calculus. The compound was isolated after using EDTA treatment, 2 M CaCl2 extraction, proteolytic digestion, ethanol precipitation, and finally purified by DEAE cellulose chromatography. It migrated as a single component on cellulose acetate electrophoresis, and chemical and infrared spectral analysis showed the presence of covalently attached sulphate groups. The sulphated glycopeptide was distinguished from being a sulphated glycosaminoglycan.

Notes: Abstract We report on UV/Visible transmission measurements of aluminum coated Lexan filters designed as UV blocking filters for soft x-ray detectors. Transmission of the filters in the 2300-8000 Å wavelength range is significantly higher than expected. It cannot be accounted for applying a simple slab model of the transmission and adopting material properties reported in the literature. We show that this is due to interference effects which are strongly dependent on the filter geometry, and to oxidation of exposed aluminum surfaces and/or chemical interaction with the plastic support. The results of this work have led to the redesign of the Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility High Resolution Camera UV blocking filters.

Notes: Abstract An assessment is made of the relative contribution of certain classes of energetic particle precipitation to the chemical composition of the middle atmosphere with emphasis placed on the production of odd nitrogen and odd hydrogen species and their subsequent role in the catalytic removal of ozone. Galactic cosmic radiation is an important source of odd nitrogen in the lower stratosphere but since the peak energy deposition occurs below the region where catalytic removal of O3 is most effective, it is questionable whether this mechanism is important in the overall terrestrial ozone budget. The precipitation of energetic solar protons can periodically produce dramatic enhancement in upper stratospheric NO. The long residence time of NO in this region of the atmosphere, where catalytic interaction with O3 is also most effective, mandates that this mechanism be included in future modelling of the global distribution of O3. Throughout the mesosphere the precipitation of energetic electrons from the outer radiation belt (60°≲Λ≲70°) can sporadically act as a major local source of odd hydrogen and odd nitrogen leading to observable O3 depletion. Future satellite studies should be directed at simultaneously measuring the precipitation flux and the concomitant atmosphere modification, and these results should be employed to develop more sophisticated models of this important coupling.

Notes: Abstract Equilibrium phase diagrams have been determined for the system CaO-P2O5-H2 using hydrothermal synthesis techniques in the temperature range 300–600° and 2 Kb H2O pressure. Well-crystallized hydroxyapatite has been produced and characterized. Small variations in unit cell parameters dependent on temperature of synthesis and bulk composition of the starting materials have been determined. Precise chemical conditions were required to obtain apatite as the only solid phase in equilibrium with solution. Equilibrium phase diagram results are compared with previous synthetic investigations.

Abstract: Zusammenfassung Eine mittlere Konzentration von 2,4×10−8 g Uran/g Asche wurde in normalen menschlichen Knochen gefunden.

This distribution suggests that uranium is present in a chemical form that is not acceptable for incorporation into bone apatite and consequently there does not appear to be a significant diffuse distribution of uranium throughout bone.

Notes: Abstract A limited, standardized osteochondral defect was created in adult rabbits and the regenerated tissue was examined histologically and autoradiographically after labellingin vitro with35S-sulphate, and microchemically for its content and composition of glycosaminoglycans. The principal findings were: 1. Between 1 week and 4 to 8 weeks, non-metachromatic connective tissue differentiated to metachromatically stained cartilage, and the proportion of the chondroitin sulphate increased significantly at the expense of the glycoproteins. 2. Up to 4 weeks, the major part of the defect area was filled with newly formed bone; after this time, the area lay above the level of the “tidemark”, towards the articular surface. 3. Hyaline cartilage with morphological, autoradiographic and chemical resemblance to the articular cartilage in terms of the distribution of glycosaminoglycans constituted the articular surface of the defect area in one-third of the cases at observation times after 8 weeks. Hyaline cartilage was observed mainly in areas where newly formed bone had closed the medullary cavity. 4. In two-thirds of the cases, after 8 weeks, parts of the articular surface of the defect consisted not only of cartilage but also of fibrous tissue, occurring mainly in the lateral parts of the defect and in areas where the medullary cavity facing the articular surface had not been sealed by bone tissue. The glycoprotein fraction increased relative to the chondroitin sulphate fraction. 5. In most cases after 20 weeks, newly-formed cartilage underwent degenerative changes, which were reflected in some reduction of the chondroitin sulphate.

Notes: Abstract Previous histological investigations have shown that the hair follicle is particularly susceptible to mineralization when the skin of hypercalcaemic rats is injured. Direct chemical and X-ray diffraction analyses of follicle tissue have now confirmed this finding. As judged by increases in both calcium and phosphorus, mineral deposits began to form in hair follicle tissue 6–12 h after a mild crush injury to the skin of rats dosed with dihydrotachysterol (DHT), and 24–48 h after a similar injury to the skin of non-dosed rats. X-ray diffraction gave a diffuse apatite pattern. Within 3 h of injury there was a rise in the calcium content of follicle tissue which was not related to DHT-dosing and which was probably a reflection of calcium binding rather than mineral deposition.

Notes: Abstract A computer program has been designed to calculate the ionic activities of calcium and orthophosphate in a wide variety of solutions. In the case of synthetic solutions the calculations were checked by comparing the computed pH values with those observed experimentally. Tests of this type with solutions having the concentrations of calcium and orthophosphate found in biological fluids and with pH values ranging from pH 3.0–10.0 indicated that the program was suitable for biological applications. The program was not effective for solutions in which the bromide ion was a principal source of ionic strength probably because of the failure of the extended Debye-Hückel equation under those circumstances. No evidence for the formation of any sodium phosphate complex at normal biological concentrations could be found.

Notes: Abstract Unwashed samples of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) contain an irreplaceable labile fraction, rich in acid phosphate and low in Ca/P ratio, which is irreversibly lost during the washing process. Native ACP precipitated in the pH range 6.6–10.6 varied in Ca/P molar ratio from 1.18 to 1.50 and in HPO 4 2− /total P from 33.0% to 10.1%. At pH 7.40, native ACP had a Ca/P molar ratio of 1.36±0.02 and contained 22.8 (±2.2)% HPO 4 2− . Unwashed precipitate data could not be attributed to either trapped supernatant Ca2+ and HPO 4 2− or extraneous Na+, Cl−, and CO 3 2− . The amorphous calcium phosphates are recognized as a class of salts having variable chemical but identical glass-like, physicochemical properties. Non-crystalline CaHPO4·xH2O may also be an ACP, especially during early formative stages. At physiological pH, ACP transforms to small platy crystals containing large amounts of readily-replaceable acid phosphate. Washing this surface layer produced chemical alterations in the resultant crystals; unwashed crystals had poorly-crystalline apatitic diffraction patterns but exhibited poorly-resolved infrared spectra intermediate between apatite and octacalcium phosphate. Structural explanations for all these phenomena are discussed, and revised bone and cartilage amorphous/crystalline mineral compositions have been re-calculated.

Notes: Summary Cyanogen bromide (CNBr) peptides were prepared of the insoluble collagen of bovine dental cementum. Following chromatographic separation, the peptides were identified by their amino-acid composition. Type I collagen ([α1(I)]2α2) accounted for more than 90% of the organic matrix, while Type III collagen ([α1(III)]3) was present at a level of approximately 5%. Amino-acid analyses revealed that the CNBr peptides from α1(I) and α2 chains of cementum closely resembled the corresponding peptides from calf skin. The only systematic difference was a higher level of hydroxylation of prolyl and lysyl residues of the cementum peptides.

Notes: Summary The calcium homeostatic mechanism was challenged in adult female rats by feeding them a calcium-deficient diet containing oxalate, and by subjecting them to pregnancy and lactation. The regimen caused a substantial weight loss, especially in those animals which reared their young well. Severe hypocalcaemia was observed in the lactating rats. Serum-P was slightly elevated. The content of hydroxyproline in serum was considerably elevated, reflecting the degree of calcium deprivation. Serum proteins were least influenced. The calcium depriving regimen reduced the growth of long bones, but did not stop it. The ash content of the bones was considerably reduced, the degree of reduction depended on the degree of calcium deprivation. Ash as percentage of total bone organ was reduced, but not to the same extent as total ash. Analyses of different parts of femur showed that the proximal and distal parts had lost more bone mineral than the diaphyseal shaft. The ash content of cortical bone tissue from the femur was estimated by a volumetric method. No differences were observed between test groups and controls, indicating that no measurable amounts of bone mineral had been removed from the walls of the vascular canals or by osteocytic osteolysis. Planimetric determinations on cross sections from femora disclosed that a great amount of bone had been removed from the endosteal surface of the diaphysis, while the periosteal surface demonstrated reduced bone apposition.

Abstract: Zusammenfassung Fluorescierende Bestandteile aus Knochen und Dentin wurden in Sephadex C25 CM Kationen-Austauschersäulen von alkalischen Hydrolysaten ihrer Matrices getrennt.
Notes: Abstract Fluorescent components in bone and dentine were separated from alkaline hydrolysates of their matrices on Sephadex C25 CM cationic exchange columns. The fluorescence levels, and the excitation (λ max 330 nm) and emission (λ max 395 nm) spectra, were the same as those observed in the intact and gelatinised matrices. The fluorescence parameters were unaltered by the hydrolysis procedure. Gel filtration on Sephadex G. 10 columns further resolved the isolated material into two components with the same fluorescence and UV absorption properties. The fluorescence was independent of pH over the range 3.5–9.5. Dialysis and gel filtration studies on the gelatinised matrices indicated a firmly-bonded association of the fluorescent material with the collagen polypeptide chains.

Notes: Abstract During the unusual molt sequence of the fresh-water isopod,Lirceus brachyrus (Harger), the posterior half of the exoskeleton is shed 24 hours before the anterior half. At the half-molt stage, occurs in the posterior part while the anterior portion is in a pre-molt condition. The percentage difference in calcium in the two halves at half-molt and full-molt is22 (p〈0.01) and33 (p〈0.01) respectively, an indication that calcium is sequestered during The rapidity of remineralization is illustrated by the fact that the total mineral content doubles in the posterior part between half and full molt and in the anterior half between the end of molt and one day after ecdysis. Calcium carbonate in the calcite cystalline form was demonstrated by electron diffraction of thin sections of the integument.

Notes: Abstract A mineral specimen from Burgess, Canada, proved upon chemical and crystallographic analyses to be an exceptionally pure sample of fluorapatite. The over-all composition corresponds to $$(Ca^{2 + } )_{9.98} (Sr^{2 + } ,Na^ + ,K^ + ,Mg^{2 + } )_{0.02} (PO_4^{3 - } )_{5.98} (HCO_3^ - ,CO_3^{2 - } )_{0.02} (F^ - )_2 $$ . The crystallographic c-axis was determined to be 6.865 Å, and the a-axis 9.374 A. Exchange data obtained by employing45Ca,32P, and18F indicate the presence of large crystallites with a specific surface of the order of 1 m2/g. It is indicated that the physical interpretation of the exchange process does not require the existence of separate departments, each with its own kinetic factor, but that the exchange may be simply related to the exponential change in the free energy of the reaction. For the reaction $$(Ca)_5 (PO_4 )_3 OH_{solid} + (F^ - ) \rightleftarrows (Ca)_5 (PO_4 )_3 F_{solid} + (OH^ - )$$ the thermodynamic constant has been calculated to be 101.26, implying that fluorapatite always will form at the expense of hydroxyapatite under physiologic conditions. This transformation will be furthered by lowering the pH.

Notes: Summary The bone resorptive factor and amphipathic antigen (AcA) previously identified by us in preparations fromActinomyces viscosus have been partially purified, characterized chemically, and compared. They elute at the same location on chromatography with Ac 22. The fatty acid composition of AcA and the bone resorptive factor is the same. Some differences in carbohydrate composition are observed. TheActinomyces factor does not affect calcium influx or cyclic AMP in isolated bone cells. Therefore it is concluded that AcA stimulates resorption either by gaining entrance into bone cells or by way of a yet undetermined second messenger.

Notes: Abstract The physical processes occurring at the surface and in the bulk of an oxide during plasma oxidation or anodization are discussed. It is shown that (i) the majority of oxygen ions used in the growth are formed by electron-assisted surface processes, (ii) the nature of the oxide surface and especially the presence of electrode contamination can have a determinant role in the oxygen exchange between the plasma and the oxide, and (iii) ion space charge can control the anodization kinetics. Two applications (formation of the insulating barrier of Josephson junctions, and GaAs MOSFET devices) are presented.

Notes: Abstract The AC high-voltage discharge-induced decomposition chemistry of trace levels of hydrogen cyanide in helium has been studied. In the absence of oxygen only low levels of molecular nitrogen were evolved. With oxygen added, the principal products were CO, CO2, and N2. No significant concentrations of NO or N2O were observed. The response of a commercial NOx analyzer to HCN and C2N2, in the NOx mode, was determined to be linear through three decades in concentration. The oxidation chemistry of HCN and C2N2 in the stainless steel converter of the analyzer was studied as a function of the amount of added oxygen.

Notes: Abstract Time-resolved mass spectrometry was used for analysis of the plasma reactions in radio frequency (RF) SiCl 4 and SiCl 4 −O 2 discharges as functions of starting partial pressure and electrical power. Molecular concentrations of the reactants and products from SiCl 4 alone and with O 2 were obtained from the mass spectra and used for plotting the kinetic curves. The SiCl 4 and O 2 consumption rates were calculated from the kinetic curves and compared with results of theoretical simulation of the reaction. Direct electron impact decomposition was found to be the main pathway for pure SiCl 4 conversion. On the contrary, the consumption of SiCl 4 in the SiCl 4 +O 2 mixtures was largely chemical. The experimental macrokinetics are in agreement with a model in which oxidation is caused by the atomic oxygen.

Notes: Abstract A silent discharge plasma reactor has been developed to study the oxidation of styrene vapor in argon/oxygen mixtures. A number of analytical techniques were employed to determine the destruction efficiency and to characterize the intermediate products. The destruction efficiency was measured as a function of initial styrene concentration, temperature, and energy density of the plasma. The formation of solid products was observed in most experiments. At low temperature (100°C), the solid deposit was polymeric in nature, while at high temperature (300°C) the solid appeared to be amorphous carbon. A combination of high temperature and high energy density resulted in high destruction efficiency and minimal production of solid films. The destruction efficiency vs. energy density is shown to be more complex than a simple model predicting exponential behavior. Several reasons for the discrepancy are suggested. The “e-folding” energy density for the destruction of styrene is compared to literature values for other organic compounds, measured using similar types of plasma reactors.

Notes: Abstract The combination of plasma discharge and adsorption was examined for oxidation of dilute benzene in air in a plasma reactor packed with a mixture of BaTiO 3 pellets and porous Al 2 O 3 pellets (i.e., an alumina hybrid reactor). The oxidative decomposition of benzene was enhanced by the benzene concentrating on the Al 2 O 3 pellets. Furthermore, there was a higher selectivity to CO 2 in the products from the hybrid than from a plasma reactor packed with BaTiO 3 pellets alone. The presence of the Al 2 O 3 pellets suppressed the formation of N 2 O.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, the NO-to-NO 2 conversion in various gaseous mixtures is experimentally investigated. Streamer coronas are produced with a dc-superimposed high-frequency ac power supply (10–60 kHz). According to NO x removal experiments in N 2 +NO x and N 2 +O 2 +NO x gaseous mixtures, it is supposed that the reverse reaction NO 2 +O→NO+O 2 may not only limit NO 2 production in N 2 +NO x mixtures, but also increase the energy cost for NO removal. Oxygen could significantly suppress reduction reactions and enhance oxidation processes. The reduction reactions, such as N+NO→N 2 +O, induce negligible NO removal provided the O 2 concentration is larger than 3.6%. With adding H 2 O into the reactor, the produced NO 2 per unit removed NO can be significantly reduced due to NO 2 oxidation. NH 3 injection could also significantly decrease the produced NO 2 via NH and NH 2 - related reduction reactions. Almost 100% of NO 2 can be removed in gaseous mixtures of N 2 +O 2 +H 2 O+NO 2 with negligible NO production.

Notes: Abstract The reactions of water vapor and oxygen with liquid uranium were studied by modulated molecular-beam mass spectrometric methods. Equivalent pressures of the reactant fluxes on the surface ranged from 6×10 −6 to 2×10−4 torr. Temperatures up to 1570 K were investigated. The metal surface was kept clean during reaction by mechanical removal of the oxide formed with a tungsten needle. For the clean liquid uranium surface, a water reaction probability of ∼0.4 was deduced both from measurement of the reaction-product hydrogen signal and by the temperature dependence of the scattered reactant signal. Based solely on the latter measure, a reaction probability of 0.6 was estimated for oxygen. The reaction probabilities on the clean surface were temperatureindependent. They decreased as the coverage of the surface by islands of oxide increased and, for water, appeared to approach a value of 0.08 for a surface completely covered with an oxide estimated to be 500 Å thick. Bombardment of the surface during reaction with argon ions produced an increase in the reactivity on solid uranium but had a negligible effect on the reaction probability for the liquid.

Notes: Abstract In systems such as the oxidation of nickel, in which grain-boundary diffusion in the oxide can control the rate of oxidation, understanding of the factors governing the grain structure is of importance. High-purity mechanically polished polycrystalline nickel was oxidized at 700°C, 800°C, and 1000°C for times up to 20 hr in 1 atm O2. The scale microstructures were examined by parallel and transverse cross section transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Texture coefficients were found by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Each grain in the transverse section grain boundary networks was systematically analyzed for width parallel to the Ni-NiO interface and perpendicular length, for boundary radius of curvature and for number of sides. The variation of these parameters with depth in the scale was examined. In particular, grains were increasingly columnar (i.e., with ratio of grain length to width 〉1) at higher temperatures and longer times. Columnar grain boundaries tended to be fairly static; the columnar grain width was less than the rate controlling grain size predicted from the oxidation rate. The mean boundary curvature per grain provided a guide to the tendency for grain growth, except in the region of the Ni-NiO interface, where the boundaries were thought to be pinned.

Notes: Abstract The corrosion of a number of experimental ternary Ni-15 wt. % Cr-0.5wt. %X alloys (where X= Y, La, Ce, Sm, Th, U, Zr, or V) has been assessed in pure oxygen at 900° C for periods of exposure up to 450 hr, and compared with the behavior of an Ni-15% Cr control alloy. It has been established that while all of the alloys oxidize in accordance with a protective, approximately parabolic regime, considerable differences in oxidation rates are exhibited. In particular, additions of La, Ce, and Th bring about progressively enhanced rates of oxidation relative to the binary alloy, whereas Y, Sm, V, U, and Zr effect increasingly reduced rates of oxidation in the order given. The rate constant for the Th-bearing alloy is about two orders of magnitude larger than that for the alloy containing Zr. Such differences in behavior seem to be associated with subtle variations in the morphology/composition of the corrosion products from alloy to alloy. The observations are considered in the light of earlier published literature concerning the effects of rare-earth and other reactive elements on the oxidation behavior of Ni/Cr alloys.

Notes: Abstract The development, growth, and adhesion of α-Al2O3 scales on platinum-aluminum alloys containing between 0.5 and 6 wt.% aluminum have been studied at temperatures in the interval between 1000 and 1450° C. The morphologies and microstructures of the α-Al2O3 scales were found to be influenced by the temperature, oxygen pressure, and the microstructures of the alloys. The oxidation rates of the alloys appeared to be controlled by transport of oxygen along grain boundaries in the α-Al2O3 scales. The α-Al2O3 scales adhered to the platinum-aluminum substrates even after extensive periods of cyclic oxidation. The good adhesion of the α-Al2O3 may result from mechanical keying of the oxide to the alloys due to the development of irregular oxide-alloy interfaces.

Notes: Abstract Silicon or chromium can be used as an oxygen getter in iron-aluminum alloys to prevent the internal oxidation of aluminum. This suppresses the formation of the iron oxide nodules that tend to destroy binary iron-aluminum alloys during high-temperature oxidation. Alloys of iron containing aluminum and silicon in varying proportions were heated in flowing air for 50 hr at 1093°C. Of the alloys tested, one containing 6% aluminum and 1 % silicon was the most resistant to oxidation.

Notes: Abstract The total concentration of point defects and deviation from stoichiometry in Co1-yO have been determined experimentally as functions of temperature and equilibrium oxygen pressure in the temperature range 1000–1250°C and oxygen pressure range 10−3-1 atm. This total concentration of defects has also been calculated from known values of the coefficients of chemical diffusion and tracer self-diffusion of cobalt. The results of the two methods agree well. It has been found in the investigated range of temperature and oxygen pressure that the defect structure of cobaltous oxide is composed not only of defects due to deviation from stoichiometry, singly ionized cation vacancies, and an equivalent amount of electron holes, but also of intrinsic defects, probably of the Frenkel type.

Notes: Abstract The influence of externally located platinum on the isothermal stability of α-Al2O3 scales formed at high temperatures has been examined. It has been observed that a nickel-base alloy forms an external scale of α-Al2O3 during oxidation at 1200°C, but this scale breaks down isothermally, enabling a faster-growing Cr2O3-rich scale to develop. However, in the presence of platinum metal alongside the specimen in the furnace hot zone, the breakdown of the α-Al2O3 scale is postponed for a substantial period of time. It appears that platinum, as the volatile species PtO2, is incorporated into the growing α-Al2O3 scale where it either influences the stress relief mechanism at temperature or reduces oxidation growth stress generation and thus significantly enhances the isothermal stability of the scale.

Notes: Abstract The results of an electron re-emission Mössbauer (ERM) spectroscopy study of the oxidation of metallic Fe at temperatures from 150 to 500°C in pure oxygen ( $${\text{p}}_{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}} } \approx {\text{ }}10$$ Torr) are presented. The oxidized samples were prepared from a metallic Fe sample enriched to 70% in the Mössbauer isotope Fe57 and the oxidation kinetics were determined volumetrically. Scanning electron microscopy was employed to characterize the morphology of the oxide films. The hematite, magnetite, and total-oxide thicknesses were determined from the ERM spectra using a theory recently developed in this laboratory, and the results were found to agree well with the measured oxygen content of the oxide films. For Fe and Fe-base alloys it is shown that the ERM technique is most useful in the oxide-thickness range of approximately 20–3000 Å within that range, oxide-phase identifications and thickness determinations are perhaps more readily determined by ERM spectroscopy than by any competing technique. In particular, the ERM measurement is nondestructive, and no supplementary measurements (such as surface-roughness determinations) or special sample preparations (such as oxide-film stripping) are required

Notes: Abstract Equations are presented to modify the classical theoretical expressions for the parabolic rate constant for the case in which the scale has a large composition range and a large variation in molar volume. The modifications appear as simple averages, together with a factor f.Evaluation of f for some hypothetical cases shows that it is near unity unless the composition gradient has an extreme deviation from linearity.

Notes: Abstract The theory of the growth of two oxide layers by Yurek et al. has been applied to the oxidation of iron at 1100° C. The theoretical parabolic rate constants for the simultaneous growth of the two oxide layers were calculated from radioactive tracer diffusion coefficients for wustite and magnetite. Good agreement was found between the theoretical and experimental values of the ratio of scale thicknesses.

Notes: Abstract Oxidation-sulfidation studies of Fe-Cr-8Ni alloys with 4, 12, and 22 wt. % Cr were conducted at 750 and 875°C in multicomponent gas mixtures that contained CO, CO2, CH4, H2, and H2S. The reaction processes resulted in parabolic kinetics. A chromium concentration in the range 0–12 wt. % in the alloy had a negligible effect on the parabolic rate constant; however, the rate constant for the alloy with 22 wt. % Cr was significantly lower. For a given sulfur partial pressure, the oxygen partial pressures required for the formation of a continuous oxide layer in an Fe-22Cr-8Ni alloy were ∼102 to 103 times those calculated for Cr-Cr2O3 equilibrium at temperatures of 875 and 750° C, respectively.

Notes: Abstract Moist air containing HCl gas caused the oxide formed on a Ni-Cr-Al alloy at 850°C to crack during the early stages of growth, and extensive blistering and spalling occurred on cooling. In dry air containing HCl gas no oxide cracking was observed at temperature although the oxide blistered and spalled on cooling. In dry or moist air free from HCl an adherent protective oxide formed which did not spall on cooling. The oxide cracking at temperature has been attributed to the production of hydrogen by reaction of Cr and Al in the alloy with water vapor and the removal of NiO as NiCl2 by reaction with HCl gas. Hydrogen produced by reaction of water vapor or HCl with Cr or Al dissolved in the alloy at temperature, but on cooling the hydrogen was released, causing the oxide to blister and spall. Preoxidation of the alloy in HCl-free atmospheres eliminated these effects of HCl gas in short-term isothermal tests.

Notes: Abstract AISI-321 steel samples were implanted with Al ions (implantation-energy:40 keV; dose: 2×1017 ions/cm2). Thermal oxidationof the samples was performed at 450, 550, 600, and 650°C for periodsvarying from 1 to 6 days in air and in a corrosive CO2-containingenvironment. Nuclear Reaction Analysis (NRA) and Rutherford BackscatteringSpectrometry (RBS) were used to investigate the oxidized samples. Asignificant improvement of the oxidation resistance of the implantedmaterial in comparison to the nonimplanted material was observed. Thisespecially applies for samples oxidized at high temperatures. The aluminumdepth distribution determined by NRA [using the resonance at 992 keV of the27Al(p, γ )28Si nuclear reaction] and RBS,indicated no variation of the Al profile in the temperature region450–600°C, whereas at 650°C a slight Al diffusion wasobserved. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM–EDS) was applied to studythe surface morphology and the constitution of the oxide scale formed, aswell as to explain the influence of Al implantation on the oxidation behaviorof AISI-321 austenitic stainless steel.

Notes: Abstract A NiO-forming Ni–5Cr–5Al (at.%) alloy has been developed anddeposited as a sputtered nanocrystalline coating. The oxide formation andoxidation behavior of this coating have been studied at 1000°C inair. The oxidation rate markedly decreased with time and the oxidationkinetics obeyed the fourth power law. Complex oxide scales, consisting ofNiO, NiAl2O4 and α-Al2O3,were formed during 200 hr oxidation. The outer oxide layer consisted of NiOand NiAl2O4 and an inner oxide layer ofα-Al2O3. The sputtered Ni–5Cr–5Alnanocrystalline coating showed good oxidation resistance due to theformation of an α-Al2O3 inner layer andexcellent adhesion of the complex oxide scales.

Notes: Abstract To improve the high-temperature oxidation resistance of STD61 steels used ashot dies or cutting tools, Ti0.3Al0.2N0.5films were deposited on STD61 steel substrates by arc-ion plating. Thedeposited film consisted of Ti3Al2N2 andTi2N phases. The oxidation characteristics were studied attemperatures ranging from 700 to 900°C in air. The deposited STD61steels displayed excellent oxidation resistance up to 800°C, butexhibited large weight gains and breakaway oxidation at 900°C. Theoxidation products were primarily Fe2O3, TiO, TiO2,and α-Al2O3, the relative amount of each oxidebeing dependent on the oxidation condition. Among various oxides, TiO2and α-Al2O3 were the major oxides at 800°Cfor at least up to 16 hr. However, at a higher temperature or a longeroxidation period, the significant outward diffusion of iron from thesubstrate resulted in the formation of iron oxides, together with otheroxides of Ti and Al.

Notes: Abstract Magnetron-sputter deposition was used to produce a Ni–8Cr–3.5Al(wt.%) nanocrystalline coating on substrates of the same alloy. Theoxidation behavior of the cast Ni–8Cr–3.5Al alloy and itssputtered coating were investigated at 1000°C in air. Complex,layered-oxide scales composed of Cr2O3 outer layer, mixed spinel NiAl2O4 and NiCr2O4middle layer, and α-Al2O3 inner layer were formedon the Ni–8Cr–3.5Al nanocrystalline coating during 200-hroxidation, whereas Cr2O3, with some NiCr2O4external layer with internal Al2O3, formed on the castalloy. Because of the formation of this α-Al2O3inner layer on the coating, the sputtered Ni–8Cr–3.5Al coatingshowed better oxidation resistance than the cast alloy. The effect ofnanocrystallization on oxide formation is discussed. It was indicated thatthe formation of this α-Al2O3 inner layer was closely related to therapid diffusion of Al through grain boundaries in the nanocrystallinecoating and the relatively high Cr content in Ni–8Cr–3.5Al.

Notes: Abstract β-FeAl coatings containing various Cr contents of 6.5–45 wt.%were produced with a closed-field, unbalanced magnetron sputter (CFUMS)deposition technique. Cyclic oxidation tests at 1100°C in air for100 1-hr cycles and isothermal exposures at 1000°C in pure O2 for100 hr were carried out with the coatings and an as-cast FeAlspecimen. All of the coatings showed good scale-spallation resistanceduring cyclic oxidation and the coating with 6.5 wt.% Cr exhibited thelowest oxidation rates in both cyclic and isothermal oxidationexposures. After oxidation, fine-grain ridge-type oxide scales formed onthe coatings, while the oxide scale formed on the cast FeAl showed alarge quantity of θ-Al2O3 blades and large interfacial voids on thebase–alloy surface. The transformation from θ to α-Al2O3was accelerated due to the presence of Cr in the coatings. The fasttransformation considerably reduced oxidation rates, suppressed fastoutward Al diffusion for the growth of a θ-Al2O3 scale, and preventedthe formation of interfacial voids that played a major role in causing thescale spallation.

Notes: Abstract During plasma spraying of metals in air, rapid-oxidation reactions occur, inmost cases. In oxidation products of Cr-rich steels, Fe–Cr spineloxide is often found as a dominant oxide phase. A thermodynamic analysisof a system composed of Fe–13%Cr alloy and water vapor or air showedthat the oxidation product in a wide range of high temperatures isFe3-wCrwO4 (w〉2). This tetragonallydistorted spinel oxide is not stable at room temperature. Water vapor andair were considered as limits of the gaseous-phase composition inatmospheric spraying by a water-stabilized plasma gun, where the compositionof the plasma plume is modified by air entrainment. The equilibriumcalculations enabled determination of the effects of temperature andgas-to-solid ratio on w. To show the existence of chromium-rich,tetragonally distorted spinel oxide experimentally, a typical productresulting from oxidation of 13%Cr–steel particles during their flightin the plasma plume was studied after rapid solidific ation. This was madepossible by trapping and quenching the flying particles in liquid nitrogenat a distance from the plasma-gun nozzle corresponding to thenozzle–substrate distance in conventional plasma spraying. The resultsobtained by X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and X-rayfluorescence analysis showed that this oxide, in which w≈2.4, constitutedthe dominant phase in the oxidation product.

Notes: Abstract Earlier studies have suggested that manganese might be attractive as an alternative fcc stabilizer to nickel in cobalt base alloys because of its beneficial effect on the sulfidation resistance. Because it has relatively high oxygen affinity, it seemed possible that it might modify the ability of the alloys to form a protective Cr 2O3 scale. Thus, a range of alloys having compositions close to the critical Co-20 Cr value have been investigated in the temperature range 900–1150° C for times up to 240 hr in air and oxygen. Similar, but less extensive studies, have been conducted on alloys containing iron or nickel. None of these elements has a significant effect on the oxidation behavior, or on the ability of the alloys to develop a protective Cr 2O3 layer. However, manganese has a significant adverse effect on the scale spallation, apparently because of its increasing the brittleness of the oxide, particularly the CoO.

Notes: Abstract The oxidation and hot corrosion behavior of a tungsten-fiber, reinforced Ni~ 20Cr alloy has been examined under the following exposure conditions: (a) pure oxygen at 1 atm pressure; (b) sulfidation in H2–10 %H2S; (c) presulfidation in H2–10 %H2S followed by oxidation in oxygen; and (d) oxidation in 1 atm oxygen after precoating with approximately 1 mg/cm2 of Na2SO4. Rapid oxidation of the tungsten fibers causes considerable distortion of the matrix and catastrophic degradation of the matrix follows. Inter diffusion between the matrix and the fibers is also important. During sulfidation, only the matrix forms sulfides, the fibers remaining unaffected. Consequently, presulfidation, although having a dramatic effect on the oxidation of the matrix does not have a damaging effect on the fibres. Equally, the presence of sodium sulfate is not critical, although severe oxidation of the exposed tungsten fibers is still observed.

Notes: Abstract Concerning the parabolic oxidation of alloys with a low content of a different valence element, we show that the Wagner-Hauffe valence approach contains some inaccuracies. This paper is devoted to the growth of an oxide MO with metal excess or oxygen deficit. The analytical processing consists in solving the differential equation connecting the point defect flux to the oxygen pressure. This equation has been solved analytically in the case where the foreign-element concentration is very high compared to that of the point defects in the pure oxide. On this assumption with a lower-valence dopant, as long as the oxide conductivity remains essentially electronic, the oxidation is limited only by the transport of ionic defects across the scale under the electric-potential gradient. Moreover, an increase of the dopant concentration may lead to an oxide exhibiting partial ionic conductivity. Consequently, the parabolic constant variations as a function of the dopant concentration is not monotonic, contrary to results published before. With a higher-valence dopant, the conductivity always remains electronic, and this result agrees with predictions based on the Wagner Hauffe approach, though the demonstrations are fundamentally different.

Notes: Abstract The oxidation behavior of Ni-20%Cr alloys containing approximately 3 vol.% Y2O3, ThO2, and A12O3 as dispersed particles has been examined in the temperature range 900 to 1200° C in slowly flowing oxygen at 100 Torr. The results show that the oxidation behavior of the Y2O3-, ThO2-, Al2O3-, and Ce02-containing alloys is very similar and that some anomalies in the behavior of the ThO2-containing alloy might be explained by the slower rate of chromium diffusion in this coarse-grained alloy. Two Al2O3-containing alloys were studied. One with a relatively coarse dispersoid size behaved in a manner analogous to a dispersion-free Ni-30% Cr alloy at 1100°C. The other alloy contained a dispersion of fine Al2O3 particles and behaved exactly like the Y2O3-containing alloy at 1000 and 1100°C, but at 1200° C oxidized at a faster rate. It has been shown that the adherent scales on dispersion-containing alloys have a stabilized fine grain size, whereas the nonadherent scales on dispersion-free alloys undergo grain growth.

Notes: Abstract The influence of shorting circuitry attachment between metal-oxide and oxideoxygen interfaces on the oxidation kinetics of copper, lithium-doped copper (Li: 400 ppm), and chromium-doped copper (Cr: 12 ppm) have been studied in dry air $$(P_{O_2 } = 21.27kPa)$$ in the temperature range of 523–1073 K. Oxide film or scale growth under short-circuiting as well as under normal oxidation conditions conforms to the parabolic rate law. The oxidation kinetics under short-circuiting resulted in decreased rates for Cu and Li-doped Cu up to a temperature of 773 K, while Cr-doped Cu exhibited an enhancement in rate compared to its normal oxidation in the same temperature range. However, above 873 K, all three systems under shorting circuitry attachment exhibited enhanced rates compared to their normal oxidation rates in conformity to the existing theoretical model. Use of additional resistances in series in the outer short-circuit Pt path have clearly established that below 773 K Mott's fieldinduced migration plays the most important role, while at elevated temperatures Wagner's electrochemical potential-gradient factor acts as the main driving force in the scale-growth process. The results have been interpreted on the basis of average defect concentration, the electrochemical potential gradient, electrical field gradient, and transport coefficient in the Cu2O layer.

Notes: Abstract The oxidation behavior of Ni3Al+2.90 wt.% Cr, Ni3Al+3.35 wt% Co, and Ni3Al+2.99 wt.% Ti alloys was studied in 1 atm of air at 1000, 1100, and 1200°C. Isothermal tests revealed parabolic kinetics for all three alloys at all temperatures. Cyclic oxidation for 28 two-hour cycles produced little spallation at 1000°C, but caused partial spallation at 1100°C. Especially, at 1200°C severe spallation in all three alloys was observed. Although additions of Cr, Co, or Ti to Ni3Al alloys slightly increased the isothermal-oxidation resistance, the additions tended to decrease the cyclic-oxidation resistance. The major difference in the oxidation of the three alloys compared with the oxidation of pure Ni3Al alloys was the existence of small α-Al2O3 particles in the middle of the α-Al2O3 scale and the formation of irregularly shaped Kirkendall voids at the alloy-scale interface.

Notes: Abstract Several commercially available Ni-base superalloys were exposed isothermally in air at temperatures between 750° and 1000°C and also under cyclic conditions at 1000°C. The kinetics of oxidation were determined and the scales were analyzed by electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Thin adherent chromia-rich scales formed on the alloys at 750°C after 1000 hr. Although Waspaloy showed the lowest weight gain in this test, it also showed the deepest internal corrosion due to oxidation of the grain-boundary carbides. At temperatures up to 1000°C the external scales were also chromia-rich but there was greater internal corrosion. Titanium in the alloys oxidized, diffusing through the chromia scale to form faceted rutile (TiO2) grains at the surface as well as forming TiO2 and TiN internally. The amount of rutile at the oxide surface increased with temperature and alloy Ti concentration. Alumina formed as discrete internal oxides below the chromia scale, although Astroloy when oxidized isothermally at 1000°C developed a semicontinuous internal layer of alumina due to its higher Al content. Under cyclic conditions Astroloy formed a thicker, less-protective scale of transition oxides probably due to its lower Cr content.

Notes: Abstract The oxidation of an Fe-38Ni-13Co-4.7Nb-1.5Ti-0.4Si superalloy (Incoloy 909 type alloy), was investigated at temperatures between 1000 K and 1400 K in Ar-(1, 10%)H20 atmosphere using metallographic, electron probe microanalysis, and X-ray diffraction techniques. The oxide scales consist of an external scale and an internal scale which has an intergranular scale (above 1200 K) and an intergranular scale. The oxide phases in each scale are identified asα-Fe2,O3 (below 1200 K) or FeO (above 1300 K) and CoO · Fe2O3 and FeO · Nb2O5, respectively. The morphologies, the oxide phases and the oxidation rates do not depend on the partial pressure of H2O in the range between one and ten percent in Ar gas. The rate constants for the intergranular-scale formation in this alloy are about one-tenth as large as those in Fe-36%Ni alloy reported previously. At all the temperatures the scales grow according to a parabolic rate law and the apparent activation energies for the processes are estimated.

Under wet conditions, weight-gain curves follow the same parabolic regime over the entire oxidation test. The scale structure strongly depends on the presence of steam in the gaseous environment. With dry oxygen, the scale is composed mainly ofα-Al2O3 after the initial formation ofγ-Al2O3 identified by ESCA and RHEED. The kinetics transient stage corresponds to the necessary time for the internal part of the initialγ-Al2O3 scale to transform into a continuousα-Al2O3 diffusion barrier. Under wet oxygen conditions, transient oxides are identified as (Mg, Fe) (Cr, Al)2O4, MgAl2O4 (orthorhombic), Al2O3 (hexagonal), these oxides transform into MgAl2O4 (cubic), Cr3O4, Fe2O3,α-Al2O3, with time. When water vapor does not change drastically oxidation kinetics, the induced presence of iron and chromium in the oxide scale could be responsible for weakening the protectiveness of alumina scales.

Notes: Abstract The initial transient high-temperature oxidation stage for binary alloys forming the most-stable oxide has been examined by means of a numerical procedure based on the finite-difference method. At variance with previous models, the present treatment takes into account the effect of the rate of the reaction at the scale/gas interface over the corrosion kinetics. The calculations concerning the transient stage are developed either using the general parabolic rate law to represent the overall scaling kinetics or using the rate law of the reaction at the scale/gas interface as a boundary condition without imposing any particular rate law to the overall process. A correct analysis of the oxidation behavior of binary alloys during the transient stage must take into account the kinetics effect of the rate of the surface reaction. The concentration of the most-reactive element at the alloy/scale interface changes regularly with time, decreasing gradually from the initial bulk value to its final steady-state value. The present results are in good agreement with those obtained by means of an approximate analytical model developed previously.

Notes: Abstract The transient state in the oxidation of solid solutions of a most-noble componentA in a most-reactive componentB (beta phase) for binaryA-B alloys presenting a limited reciprocal solubility of the two metals has been examined assuming that theirB content is sufficient for the exclusive growth of externalBO scales. Above a criticalB content of the alloy theBO scales may grow directly on the surface of the beta phase, while below this limit they can only form over a layer ofB-depleted solid solution ofB inA (alpha phase), which appears after a critical time. An approximate analytical expression for the profile of concentration ofB in the alloy has been adopted to calculate the flux ofB in the metal. Moreover, the effect of the reaction between the gas and the external oxide surface has been taken into account using a procedure developed by Wagner for the oxidation of pure metals. The corrosion kinetics as well as all the parameters involved, such as the concentration ofB at the alloy-scale interface, have been calculated as functions of the corrosion time. The results show that, as time proceeds, the instantaneous parabolic rate constant increases and the concentration ofB at the alloy-scale interface decreases, both tending gradually to their corresponding steady-state values. It is also predicted that if the rate of transformation of the beta phase in the alpha phase after the alloy reaches the composition of equilibrium at the interface with the oxide is lower than the corresponding rate of displacement of the alloy surface due to scale growth, the corrosion of beta phase alloys may eventually lead to the formation of two phase mixtures of alpha phase andBO which are expected to grow at much larger rates than in the presence of a uniform continuous alpha layer.

Notes: Abstract Mechanically-alloyed Ni-base ODS superalloys currently receive attention for application in future gas turbines because they exhibit outstanding mechanical properties at high temperatures. They also protect themselves against oxidation by forming chromia and/or alumina scales. However, little attention has been given so far to the initial stages of oxidation of Ni-base ODS superalloys, containing Cr as well as Al in considerable amounts. In the current work, oxidation at 1150°C was studied for different holding times up to 200 hr for the commercial materials MA6000 and PM3030 which contain. Al in increasing amounts. MA 754, a chromia former, was investigated as a reference. It was shown that for the potential alumina formers MA6000 and PM3030 the continuity and therefore protectiveness of the secondary Al2O3 at later stages is indeed determined by the initial stages of oxidation.

Notes: Abstract A commercial-grade nickel containing small amounts of carbon, manganese, and silicon was exposed to air for periods up to 288 hr at 1050°C to study the effect of oxidation on the formation of oxides of these impurity elements. Exposure of nickel to air led to decarburization. The maximum amount of decarburization occurred during the initial period of air exposure and the loss in carbon was more in the metal with a smaller section size. Decarburization in the metal produced voids in the oxide scale due to the formation of CO2 gas. It has been shown further that CO and/or CO2 gas bubbles, which form in high purity nickel on grain boundaries during exposure to air at elevated temperatures, cannot exist in commercial-grade nickel where manganese is present as an impurity. Instead, oxides of manganese form in the grain boundaries as well as in the matrix. This is because manganese oxide is more stable than CO or CO2 gas.

Notes: Abstract The oxidation of α-Fe and ɛ-Fe2N1−z at 573 K and 673 K in O2 at 1 atm was investigated by thermogravimetrical analysis, X-ray diffraction, light-optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and electron probe X-ray microanalysis. Upon oxidation at 573 K and 673 K, on α-Fe initially α-Fe2O3 develops, whereas on ɛ-Fe2N1−z initially Fe3O4 develops. In an early stage of oxidation the oxidation rate of ɛ-Fe2N1−z appears to be much larger than of α-Fe. This can be attributed largely to an effective surface area available for oxygen uptake, which is much larger for ɛ-Fe2N1−z than for α-Fe due to the porous structure of ɛ-Fe2N1−z as prepared by gaseous nitriding of iron. The development of a magnetite layer in-between the hematite layer and the α-Fe substrate, at a later stage of oxidation, enhances layer-growth kinetics. After 100 min oxidation at 673 K the (parabolic) oxidation rates for α-Fe and ɛ-Fe2N1−z become about equal, indicating that on both substrates the oxide growth is controlled by the same rate limiting step which is attributed to short-circuit diffusion of iron cations. Oxidizing ɛ-Fe2N1−z increases the nitrogen concentration in the remaining ɛ-iron nitride, because the outward flux of iron cations, necessary for oxide growth, leads to an accumulation of nitrogen atoms left behind.

Notes: Abstract In a recent study, CO2 has been reported to enhance the oxidation rate of binary titanium-aluminum alloys. The detrimental effect of CO2 was not, however, observed in a ternary alloy containing niobium. In this paper, possible explanations for these observations are examined. First, results from the literature regarding the effects of niobium in improving the resistance of titanium-aluminum alloys are briefly reviewed. Second, a thermodynamic analysis which offers a possible explanation for the beneficial effect of niobium in eliminating the CO2-enhanced oxidation of titanium-aluminum alloys is presented.

Notes: Abstract Many mechanisms for the effect of reactive elements on the selective oxidation and scale adhesion of alloys have been proposed. However, nanocrystallization (or microcrystallization) has recently been found to have almost the same effect as that of reactive elements. This note reviews the effect of nanocrystallization on the selective oxidation and adhesion of Al2O3 scale with particular reference to the author's own results.

Notes: Abstract The oxidation behavior of pure titanium has been investigated in the temperature range of 1000 K to 1300 K in CO2 or Ar-10%CO2. Optical microscopy, electron probe microanalyses, and X-ray measurements on the oxide scales formed during oxidation indicate that their structures are nearly independent of temperature and the corrosion atmosphere. The scales consisted of two layers, an external one and an internal one, having a rutile (TiO2) structure. The parabolic rate law was confirmed for growth of the external scale and the permeation depth of oxygen in titanium with apparent activation energies of 266 and 226 kJ/mol, respectively. The rate-determining diffusion species in the oxidation processes are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The oxidation of zirconium at high temperature (T〉 400°C) leads to reaction products of two allotropic oxide (ZrO2 monoclinic and ZrO2 tetragonal). The distribution and proportion of these two phases were studied as a function of time and space by X-ray diffraction techniques. Quantitative analyses are possible after some corrections, and we demonstrate the presence of a phase gradient in the oxide scale. The interest of this nondestructive method is then discussed.

Notes: Abstract The oxidation in air of three two phase Cu-Cr alloys with nominal Cr contents of 25, 50, and 75 wt. % was studied at 700–900°C. The alloys corroded nearly parabolically, except at 900°C, when the corrosion rates decreased with time more rapidly than predicted by the parabolic rate law. The corrosion rate decreased for higher Cr contents in the alloy under constant temperature and generally increased with temperature for the same alloy composition. The scales were complex and consisted in most cases of an outermost copper oxide layer free from chromium and an inner layer composed of a matrix of copper oxide or of the double oxide Cu2Cr2O4, often containing particles of chromium metal surrounded by chromia and then by the double oxide. Metallic copper was also frequently mixed with chromia. Cr-rich regions tended to form continuous chromia layers at the base of the scale, especially at the highest temperature. No chromium depletion was observed in the alloy.

Notes: Abstract In situ XRD stress determinations have been performed during oxidation of pure iron (p(O2=2 × 10−3 Pa,T=800°C)). The compressive stress, initially present in the substrate due to surface preparation, is completely released at 400°C. Under the test conditions, the in situ compressive-stress level determined in the FeO scale during oxidation is not strongly dependent upon the presence of a ceria coating. On blank and coated specimens, the compressive stress varies from −400 ± 80 MPa to −150 ± 100 MPa during 30 hr oxidation. The decrease is quicker at the beginning of the test performed on blank specimens. Epitaxial relationships between the wüstite scale and iron (under low-pressure starting conditions) caused thein situ compressive stress in the oxide scale to be two times greater compared to the usual test conditions. This indicates that epitaxial relationships can be a source of stress in an oxide scale that ceria coatings may lower compressive stresses.

Notes: Abstract The chloridation-oxidation behavior of Fe-Cr (0–25 wt. %Cr) and Ni-Cr (0–20 wt.%Cr) alloys was studied at 800°C in three different H2-HCl-H2O(ν) environments. In a low-HCI and low-H2O(ν) environment, where Cr2O3 is thermodynamically stable, the corrosion resistance of the Fe-Cr alloys increased with increasing Cr content in the alloys. In a high-HCl and high-H2O(ν) environment, where FeCr2O4 is stable and CrCl2 is metastable, the corrosion resistance of the Fe-Cr alloys depended similarly on the Cr content. Low-Cr-Fe-Cr alloys exhibited large weight losses, while Fe-Cr alloys with higher than 19 wt. %Cr showed good corrosion resistance. In an environment of high-HCl in the absence of H2O(ν), the evaporative corrosion rate was fast and limited by gas phase diffusion, and independent of the Cr content in the Fe-Cr alloys. Ni and Ni-Cr alloys generally showed good corrosion resistance in the environments of high H2O(ν) because of the low NiCl2 vapor pressure and formation of a protective Cr2O3 scale. However, in the environment of high HCl in the absence of H2O(ν), selective formation and evaporation of CrCl2 occur, which results in Cr depletion and networks of voids for even a high-Cr Ni-Cr alloy.
