    Description: High-resolution seismic reflection data across the Maurice Ewing Bank, the easternmost section of the Falkland/ Malvinas Plateau in the SW South Atlantic, is integrated with information from Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 36, Sites 327, 329, and 330 and Leg 71 Site 511. Five seismic units were identified ranging in age from the middle Jurassic to Quaternary and are interpreted with respect to the evolution of the oceanic circulation in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean in response to tectonic and climatic events. Sedimentary sequences of late Cretaceous and early Paleogene include little and restricted evidence of current activity, attributable to shallow/ intermediate-depth connections between the developing South Atlantic and the Southern Ocean. In contrast, sedimentary sequences of the late Eocene/Oligocene and Neogene reveal a history of strong current-related erosion and deposition. These features are identified in specific water-depth ranges and interpreted to document proto-Upper and -Lower Circumpolar Deep Waters to have shaped the bank since the Oligocene. The Maurice Ewing Bank bathymetric high thus has been acting as a barrier for the deep and bottom water masses flowing within the Antarctic Circumpolar Current since its establishment at the Eocene-Oligocene boundary. This study provides evidence for a multi-layered ocean already in the Paleocene/early Eocene.

    Description: Igneous activity from the late Miocene to historic time (most recently 1891 CE) in the Strait of Sicily has created two volcanic islands (Pantelleria and Linosa) and several seamounts. These volcanoes are dominated by transitional (ol + hy-normative) to alkaline (ne-normative) basaltic lavas and scoriae; volcanic felsic rocks (peralkaline trachyte-rhyolite) crop out only on Pantelleria. Although most likely erupted through continental crust,basalts demonstrate no evidence of crustal contamination and are geochemically similar to oceanic island basalts (OIB). Despite their isotopic similarities, there are considerable compositional differences with respect to major and trace element geochemistry both between and within the two islands that are due to short-length scale mantle heterogeneity beneath the region as well as variability in partial melting and magma storage conditions. Published geophysical surveys suggest that lithospheric thickness beneath both islands is ~60 km; this is consistent with the results of our geochemical modelling (59–60 km), which also suggest mantle potential temperatures between 1415 and 1435 °C, similar to those documented in other continental passive rifts. Trace element and isotopic data reveal that the asthenosphere beneath the Strait of Sicily is heterogenous at both interisland (100s of km) and intra-island (10s of km) scales. Although there is some compositional overlap between the two major synthems at Linosa, in general the older magmas (Arena Bianca, 700 ka) formed as a result of ~5% partial melting of a depleted MORB mantle (DMM) source enriched with a relatively small amount of recycled MORB material, whereas the younger magmas (Monte Bandiera, 530 ka) formed as a result of ~2% partial melting of a similar mantle source. Pantelleria magmas formed from a higher degree (~6%) of partial melting of a DMM source with a relatively greater amount of recycled MORB material and possibly other components. Geochemical modelling also suggests the older magmas on Linosa differentiated at a much shallower level (~8 km) than the younger magmas (~25 km, at or below the base of the crust) prior to eruption. Magmas stored in higher-level reservoirs were effectively homogenized and preserve a narrower compositional range than magmas sourced from depth. Data for the seamounts are scarce and compromised by significant seawater alteration; thus, these volcanic centers cannot be modelled but based on comparative geochemistry with the islands are likely the result of even smaller (〈 2%) degrees of partial melting beneath thicker (〉 60 km) lithosphere. Despite the geophysical similarities between the two islands in terms of lithospheric thickness and crustal thinning, melt productivity has been greater at Pantelleria, producing a much larger island and sustaining felsic magmatism, which we hypothesize may ultimately be entirely due to the local occurrence of much more fusible mantle

    Description: Arctic sea ice represents an important component of the climate system, and the present reduction of sea ice in the Arctic is of major concern. Despite its importance, little is known about past changes in sea-ice cover and the underlying forcing mechanisms. Here, we use diatom assemblages from a marine sediment core collected from the West Greenland shelf to reconstruct changes in sea-ice cover over the last millennium. The proxy-based reconstruction demonstrates a generally strong link between changes in sea-ice cover and solar variability during the last millennium. Weaker (or stronger) solar forcing may result in the increase (or decrease) in sea-ice cover west of Greenland. In addition, model simulations show that variations in solar activity not only affect local sea-ice formation, but also control the sea-ice transport from the Arctic Ocean through a sea-ice-ocean-atmosphere feedback mechanism. The role of solar forcing, however, appears to have been more ambiguous during an interval around AD 1500, after the transition from the Medieval Climate Anomaly to the Little Ice Age, likely to be driven by a range of factors.

    Description: The δ13C value measured on benthic foraminiferal tests is widely used by palaeoceanographers to reconstruct the distribution of past water masses. The biogeochemical processes involved in forming the benthic foraminiferal δ13C signal (δ13Cforam), however, are not fully understood and a sound mechanistic description is still lacking. We use a reaction–diffusion model for calcification developed by Wolf-Gladrow et al. (1999) and Zeebe et al. (1999) in order to quantify the effects of different physical, chemical, and biological processes on δ13Cforam of an idealised benthic foraminiferal shell. Changes in the δ13C value of dissolved inorganic carbon (δ13CDIC) cause equal changes in δ13Cforam in the model. The results further indicate that temperature, respiration rate, and pH have a significant impact on δ13Cforam. In contrast, salinity, pressure, the δ13C value of particulate organic carbon (δ13CPOC), total alkalinity, and calcification rate show only a limited influence. In sensitivity experiments we assess how combining these effects can influence δ13Cforam. We can potentially explain 33 to 47% of the interglacial-to-glacial decrease in δ13Cforam by changes in temperature and pH, without invoking changes in δ13CDIC. Furthermore, about a quarter of the − 0.4‰ change in δ13Cforam observed in phytodetritus layers can be accounted for by an increase in respiration rate and a reduction in pH.

    Description: A high resolution multi–proxy (pollen, grain size, total organic carbon) record from a small mountain lake (Lake Khuisiin; 46.6°N, 101.8°E; 2270 m a.s.l.) in the south–eastern Khangai Mountains of central Mongolia has been used to explore changes in vegetation and climate over the last 1200 years. The pollen data indicates that the vegetation changed from dry steppe dominated by Poaceae and Artemisia (ca AD 760–950), to Larix forest steppe (ca AD 950–1170), Larix–Betula forest steppe (ca AD 1170–1380), meadow dominated by Cyperaceae and Poaceae (ca AD 1380–1830), and Larix–Betula forest steppe (after ∼ AD 1830). The cold-wet period between AD 1380 and 1830 may relate to the Little Ice Age. Environmental changes were generally subtle and climate change seems to have been the major driver of variations in vegetation until at least the early part of the 20th century, suggesting that either the level of human activity was generally low, or the relationship between human activity and vegetation did not alter substantially between AD 760 and 1830. A review of centennial–scale moisture records from China and Mongolia revealed that most areas experienced major changes at ca AD 1500 and AD 1900. However, the moisture availability since AD 1500 varied between sites, with no clear regional pattern or relationship to present–day conditions. Both the reconstructions and the moisture levels simulation on a millennium scale performed in the MPI Earth System Model indicate that the monsoon–westerlies transition area shows a greater climate variability than those areas influenced by the westerlies, or by the summer monsoon only.

    Description: One of the most promising options to stabilize and reduce the atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases is Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). This technique consists of separating CO2 from other industrial flue gases and storing it in geological reservoirs, such as deep saline aquifers, depleted oil and/or gas fields, and unminable coal beds. A detailed reworking of all available Italian deep-drilling data was performed to identify potential storage reservoirs in deep saline aquifers. Data were organized into a GIS geo-database containing stratigraphic and fluid chemistry information as well as physiochemical characteristics of the geological formations. Caprock efficiency was evaluated via numerical parameterization of rock permeabilities, defining the “Caprock Quality Factor” (Fbp) for each well. The geo-database also includes strategic information such as the distribution of deep aquifers, seismogenic sources and areas, seismic events, Diffuse Degassing Structures, heat flow, thermal anomalies, and anthropogenic CO2 sources. Results allow the definition of potentially suitable areas for future studies on CO2 geological storage located in the fore-deep domains of the Alps and Apennines chains, where efficient marly-to-clayish caprocks lie above deep aquifers hosted in sands or limestones. Most of them are far form seismogenic sources and Diffuse Degassing Structures.

    Description: An overview on the data of columnar aerosol properties measured in Northern Europe is provided. Apart from the necessary data gathered in the Arctic, the knowledge of the aerosol loading in nearby areas (e.g. sub-Arctic) is of maximum interest to achieve a correct analysis of the Arctic aerosols and transport patterns. This work evaluates data from operational sites with sun photometer measurements belonging either to national or international networks (AERONET, GAW-PFR) and programs conducted in Scandi- navia and Svalbard. We enumerate a list of sites, measurement type and periods together with observed aerosol properties. An evaluation and analysis of aerosol data was carried out with a review of previous results as well. Aerosol optical depth (AOD) and Ångström exponent (AE) are the current parameters with suf␣cient long-term records for a ␣rst evaluation of aerosol properties. AOD (500 nm) ranges from 0.08 to 0.10 in Arctic and sub-Arctic sites (Ny-Ålesund: 0.09; Andenes: 0.10; Sodankylä: 0.08), and it is somewhat higher in more populated areas in Southern Scandinavia (AOD about 0.10e0.12 at 500 nm). On the Norwegian coast, aerosols show larger mean size (AE � 1.2 at Andenes) than in Finland, with continental climate (AE � 1.5 at Sodankylä). Columnar particle size distributions and related parameters derived from inversion of sun/sky radiances were also investigated. This work makes special emphasis in the joint and collaborative effort of the various groups from different countries involved in this study. Part of the measurements presented here were involved in the IPY projects Polar-AOD and POLARCAT.

    Description: We present a high resolution DTM of the Palinuro Seamount (PS, Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy) resulting from the processing of multibeam swath bathymetry records acquired during the second leg of the “Aeolian 2007” cruise. PS consists of several superimposed volcanoes aligned along a N100°E strike and measures 55×25 km. The western and the central sectors result from the coalescence of collapse structures (calderas) with younger volcanic cones. The eastern sector reveals a more complex and articulated structure. In the central sector, a volcanic crater with a well-preserved rim not obliterated by erosional events suggests a volcanological rejuvenation of this sector. The presence of flat surfaces on the top of the seamount may be due to the formation of marine terraces during the last sea-level lowering. Lateral collapses on the northern and southern flanks of the seamount are probably related to slope instability, as suggested by the presence of steep slopes (25–40°). The main fault affecting PS strikes N65°E and shows a right lateral component of movement. E–W and N10°E striking faults are also present. Assuming that theN100°E deep-seated fault,which is responsible for theemplacement of PS,movedwith sinistral slips, we interpret the N65°E and the N10°E faults as right-lateral (second order) shear and left-lateral (third order) shear, respectively. Due to the particular location of the Palinuro Seamount, the data presented here allow us to better understand the volcanism and the geodynamic processes of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

    Description: In this work we illustrate the results of some laboratory and full scale experiments which have the purposes of analysing the performance of different types of monitoring equipments in detection of damage level in masonry buildings. Such experiments involved monitoring, by means of optical fibre strain-metre and total laser station, of a selected building that, owing to its position in the active caldera of the Campi Flegrei (Southern Italy), could undergo remarkable ground shaking and large, although very slow, ground movements (bradyseismic crises) of volcanic origin. The field geodetic monitoring has been realised by an automatic system of topographical 3D survey, based on two automatic Total Station Leica TCA2003 and by increasing the number of benchmarks of the levelling network in the area near the building. The experiments have shown that structure deformations caused by elastic phase, when the building undergoes elastic deformation, is close or under the limit of detection through laser total station (about 1–2 mm), while, when the damage occurs, deformations increase up to values beyond 10–20 mm easily detectable by geodetic methods. The optical fibre monitoring provides good results in elastic phase, whereas as the damage level rises up the data become more and more difficult to understand. In conclusion the paper shows that the geodetic techniques are very useful in structural quasi real-time monitoring for analysing the behaviour of masonry buildings damaged by ground movements induced by landslide phenomena, bradyseism or intrinsic structural yielding.

    Description: Since Roman time, the heat produced by Neapolitan volcanoes was an appeal for people living in and outside the area, for the fruition of the famous thermal baths. This very large area, which spans from Campi Flegrei and Ischia calderas to Somma-Vesuvius volcano, is characterized by high temperature at shallow depth and intense heat flow, and is yet utilized for the bathing and spa treatment industry, while only in the middle of the 20th century a tentative of geothermal exploitation for energy production was performed. Pioneering researches of geothermal resource were carried out in Campanian region since 1930, until 1985, during which a large amount of geological data were collected. In this paper, we make for the first time a review of the history of geothermal explorations in the active Campanian volcanic area. By the analysis of a great amount of literature data and technical reports we reconstruct the chronology and the main information of the drillings performed since 1930 by the SAFEN Company and successively in the framework of the ENEL-AGIP Joint Venture for geothermal exploration. The available data are utilized to correlate the temperatures measured within the deeper wells with the possible sources of geothermal heat in the shallow crust, down to about 8–10 km of depth. Finally, we assess the geothermal potential of the hottest areas, Ischia Island and Campi Flegrei, which have shown the best data and favorable physical conditions for a reliable, and cost-effective, exploitation for thermal and electric purposes.

    Description: Accuracy requirements for aerosol optical depth (AOD) in polar regions are much more stringent than those usually encountered in established sun photometer networks, while comparability of data from different archive centres is a further important issue. Therefore, two intercomparison campaigns were held during spring 2006 at Ny-Ålesund (Svalbard) and autumn 2008 at Izaña (Tenerife) within the framework of the IPY POLAR-AOD project, with the participation of various research institutions routinely employing different instrument models at Arctic and Antarctic stations. As reported here, a common algorithm was used for data analysis with the aim of minimizing a large part of the discrepancies affecting the previous studies. During the Ny-Ålesund campaign, spectral values of AOD derived from measurements taken with different instruments were found to agree, presenting at both 500 nm and 870 nm wavelengths average values of root mean square difference (RMSD) and standard deviation of the difference (SDD) equal to 0.003. Correspondingly, the mean bias difference (MBD) varied mainly between ␣0.003 and þ0.003 at 500 nm, and between ␣0.004 and þ0.003 at 870 nm. During the Izaña campaign, which was also intended as an intercalibration opportunity, RMSD and SDD values were estimated to be equal to 0.002 for both channels on average, with MBD ranging between ␣0.004 and þ0.004 at 500 nm and between ␣0.002 and þ0.003 at 870 nm. RMSD and SDD values for Ångström exponent a were estimated equal to 0.06 during the Ny-Ålesund campaign and 0.39 at Izaña. The results confirmed that sun photometry is a valid technique for aerosol monitoring in the pristine atmospheric turbidity conditions usually observed at high latitudes.

    Description: We have here analysed two normal faults of the central Apennines, one that affects the south-western slopes of theMontagna dei Fiori–Montagna di Campli relief, and the other that is located along the south-western border of the Leonessa intermontane depression. Through this analysis, we aim to better understand the reliability of geomorphic features, such as the fresh exposure of fault planes along bedrock scarps as certain evidence of active faulting in the Apennines, and to define the Quaternary kinematic history of these tectonic structures. The experience gathered from these two case studies suggests that the so-called ‘geomorphic signature’ of recent fault activity must be supported by wider geomorphologic and geologic investigations, such as the identification of displaced deposits and landforms not older than the Late Pleistocene, and/or an accurate definition of the slope instabilities. Our observations indicate that the fault planes studied are exposed exclusively because of the occurrence of non-tectonic processes, i.e. differential erosion and gravitational phenomena that have affected the portions of the slopes that are located in the hanging wall sectors. The geological evidence we have collected indicates that the Montagna dei Fiori–Montagna di Campli fault was probably not active during the whole of theuaternary, while the tectonic activity of the Leonessa fault ceased (or strongly reduced) at least during the Late Pleistocene, and probably since the Middle Pleistocene. The present lack of activity of these tectonic structures suggests that the fault activation for high magnitude earthquakes that produce surface faulting is improbable (i.e.Mw5.5–6.0, with reference to the Apennines, according toMichetti et al. [Michetti, A.M., Brunamonte, F., Serva, L.,Vittori, E. (1996), Trench investigations of the 1915 Fucino earthquake fault scarps (Abruzzo, Central Italy):geological evidence of large historical events, J. Geoph. Res.,101, 5921–5936; Michetti, A.M., Ferreli, L., Esposito, E.,Porfido, S., Blumetti, A.M., Vittori, E., Serva, L., Roberts, G.P. (2000)]). If, according to the current view, the shifting of the intra-Apennine extension towards the Adriatic sectors is still active, the Montagna dei Fiori–Montagna di Campli fault might be involved in active extensional deformation in the future.

    Description: The rapid urban development in Istanbul has lead to an increase in the exposure levels of the urban vulnerability. Due to the steadily increasing population, with improper land-use planning, inappropriate construction techniques and inadequate infrastructure systems, associated with an existing high hazard level, Istanbul is one of the most risky cities in the Mediterranean region. Estimations of casualties and losses, expected for given earthquake scenarios, are necessary to develop sustainable rehabilitation programs and for improving preparedness. Deterministic hazard scenarios and time-dependent probabilistic hazard assessment were used as input to a GIS-based loss estimation model, to evaluate the earthquake risk for Istanbul. The deterministic ground shaking scenarios, used for loss estimation in Istanbul, were defined in terms of acceleration and velocity time series for recognized reference earthquakes caused by different rupture models along extended sources. The ground motions were calculated for the whole metropolitan area extending over a grid system of 25×100 km2. For the case of Istanbul, the representative scenario was selected by comparing the simulated peak values and response spectra with the empirical ground motion models available for the area. Simulated values are within one standard deviation of the empirical regressions. The availability of wide-ranging building inventory data allowed the application of a GIS-based loss estimation model (KoeriLoss-V2) to evaluate different loss scenarios depending on the ground shaking input, as well as to consider the implications of mitigation actions. It was found that 30% of the buildings in the metropolitan area may be in need of either strengthening or demolition to achieve an adequate degree of life safety.

The Holocene succession is represented by whitish calcareous mud that is divided into two units, SUL2 (ca 32 m thick) and SUL1 (ca 8 m thick), for a total thickness of ca 40 m. These units correspond to the youngest two out of six sedimentary cycles recognised in the Sulmona basin that are related to the lake sedimentation since the Middle Pleistocene. Height concordant U series age determinations and additional chronological data constrain the whole Holocene succession to between ca 8000 and 1000 yrs BP. This includes a sedimentary hiatus that separates the SUL2 and SUL1 units, which is roughly dated between 〈2800 and ca 2000 yrs BP. A total of 31 and 6 tephra layers were identified within the SUL2 and SUL1 units, respectively. However, only 28 tephra layers yielded fresh micropumices or glass shards suitable for chemical analyses using a microprobe wavelength dispersive spectrometer. Chronological and compositional constraints suggest that 27 ash layers probably derive from the Mt. Somma-Vesuvius Holocene volcanic activity, and one to the Ischia Island eruption of the Cannavale tephra (2920 _ 450 cal yrs BP). The 27 ash layers compatible with Mt. Somma-Vesuvius activity are clustered in three different time intervals: from ca 2000 to 〉1000; from 3600 to 3100; and from 7600 to 4700 yrs BP. The first, youngest cluster, comprises six layers and correlates with the intense explosive activity of Mt. Somma-Vesuvius that occurred after the prominent AD 79 Pompeii eruption, but only the near-Plinian event of AD 472 has been tentatively recognised. The intermediate cluster (3600– 3100 yrs BP) starts with tephra that chemically and chronologically matches the products from the ‘‘Pomici di Avellino’’ eruption (ca 3800_ 200 yrs BP). This is followed by eight further layers, where the glasses exhibit chemical features that are similar in composition to the products from the so-called ‘‘Protohistoric’’ or AP eruptions; however, only the distal equivalents of three AP events (AP3, AP4 and AP6) are tentatively designated. Finally, the early cluster (7600–4700 yrs BP) comprises 12 layers that contain evidence of a surprising, previously unrecognised, activity of the Mt. Somma-Vesuvius volcano during its supposed period of quiescence, between the major Plinian ‘‘Pomici di Mercato’’ (ca 9000 yrs BP) and ‘‘Pomici di Avellino’’ eruptions. Alternatively, since at present there is no evidence of a similar significant activity in the proximal area of this well-known volcano, a hitherto unknown origin of these tephras cannot be role out. The results of the present study provide new data that enrich our previous knowledge of the Holocene tephrostratigraphy and tephrochronology in central Italy, and a new model for the recent explosive activity of the Peninsular Italy volcanoes and the dispersal of the related pyroclastic deposits.

    Description: We present a high resolution DTM of the Palinuro Seamount (PS, Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy) resulting from the processing of multibeam swath bathymetry records acquired during the second leg of the “Aeolian 2007” cruise. PS consists of several superimposed volcanoes aligned along a N100°E strike and measures 55×25 km. The western and the central sectors result from the coalescence of collapse structures (calderas) with younger volcanic cones. The eastern sector reveals a more complex and articulated structure. In the central sector, a volcanic crater with a well-preserved rim not obliterated by erosional events suggests a volcanological rejuvenation of this sector. The presence of flat surfaces on the top of the seamount may be due to the formation of marine terraces during the last sea-level lowering. Lateral collapses on the northern and southern flanks of the seamount are probably related to slope instability, as suggested by the presence of steep slopes (25–40°). The main fault affecting PS strikes N65°E and shows a right lateral component of movement. E–W and N10°E striking faults are also present. Assuming that theN100°E deep-seated fault,which is responsible for theemplacement of PS,movedwith sinistral slips, we interpret the N65°E and the N10°E faults as right-lateral (second order) shear and left-lateral (third order) shear, respectively. Due to the particular location of the Palinuro Seamount, the data presented here allow us to better understand the volcanism and the geodynamic processes of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

    Description: Sampling and analyses methods for determining the stable isotopic compositions of Hg in an active volcanic system were tested and optimized at the volcanic complex of Vulcano (Aeolian Islands, Italy). Condensed gaseous fumarole Hg(fum) T , plume gaseous elemental Hg(g) 0 and plume particulate Hg(p) II were obtained at fumaroles F0, F5, F11, and FA. The average total Hg emissions, based on HgT/SO2 in condensed fumarolic gases and plumes, range from 2.5 to 10.1 kg y−1, in agreement with published values [Ferrara, R., Mazzolai, B., Lanzillotta, E., Nucaro, E., Pirrone, N., 2000. Volcanoes as emission sources of atmospheric mercury in the Mediterranean Basin. Sci. Plume Hg(p) II increases with distance from the fumarole vent, at the expense of Hg(g) 0 and indicates significant in-plume oxidation and condensation of fumarole Hg(fum) T . Relative to the NIST SRM3133 Hg standard, the stable isotopic compositions of Hg are δ202Hg(fum) T =−0.74‰±0.18 (2SD, n=4) for condensed gaseous fumarole Hg(fum) T , δ202Hg(g) 0 =−1.74‰±0.36 (2SD, n=1) for plume gaseous elemental Hg(g) 0 at the F0 fumarole, and δ202Hg(p) II =−0.11‰±0.18 (2SD, n=4) for plume particulate Hg(p) II . The enrichment of Hg(p) II in the heavy isotopes and Hg(g) 0 in the light isotopes relative to the total condensed fumarolic Hg(fum) T gas complements the speciation data and demonstrates a gas-particle fractionation occurring after the gas expulsion inambient T° atmosphere. A first order Rayleigh equilibriumcondensation isotope fractionation model yields a fractionation factor αcond-gas of 1.00135±0.00058.

    Description: The southernmost segment of the Andes of southern Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego forms a ∼700 km long orogenic re-entrant with an interlimb angle of ∼90° known as Patagonian orocline. No reliable paleomagnetic evidence has been gathered so far to assess whether this great orogenic bend is a primary arc formed over an articulated paleomargin, or is due to bending of a previously less curved (or rectilinear) chain. Here we report on an extensive paleomagnetic and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) study carried out on 22 sites (298 oriented cores), predominantly sampled in Eocene marine clays from the external Magallanes belt of Tierra del Fuego. Five sites (out of six giving reliable paleomagnetic results) containing magnetite and subordinate iron sulphides yield a positive fold test at the 99% significance level, and document no significant rotation since ∼50 Ma. Thus, the Patagonian orocline is either a primary bend, or an orocline formed after Cretaceous–earliest Tertiary rotations. Our data imply that the opening of the Drake Passage between South America and Antarctica (probably causing the onset of Antarctica glaciation and global climate cooling), was definitely not related to the formation of the Patagonian orocline, but was likely the sole consequence of the 32±2 Ma Scotia plate spreading. Well-defined magnetic lineations gathered at 18 sites from the Magallanes belt are sub-parallel to (mostly E–W) local fold axes, while they trend randomly at two sites from the Magallanes foreland. Our and previous AMS data consistently show that the Fuegian Andes were characterized by a N–S compression and northward displacing fold–thrust sheets during Eocene–early Miocene times (50–20 Ma), an unexpected kinematics considering coeval South America–Antarctica relative motion. Both paleomagnetic and AMS data suggest no significant influence from the E–W left-lateral Magallanes–Fagnano strike–slip fault system (MFFS), running a few kilometres south of our sampling sites. We thus speculate that strike–slip fault offset in the Fuegian Andes may range in the lower bound values (∼20 km) among those proposed so far. In any case our data exclude any influence of strike–slip tectonics on the genesis of the great orogenic bend called Patagonian orocline.

    Description: We report on a comprehensive study of major-ion chemistry, dissolved gases, and stable isotopes measured in water wells at Vulcano Island since 1988. The work focuses on a quantitative model describing steam condensation and boiling phenomena in shallow water bodies. The model is based on the differences in partition coefficients between liquid water and vapor characterizing oxygen and hydrogen isotopes, as well as volcanic gases (CO2, S species, and HCl). Based on both physical conditions of aquifers identified during drilling campaigns and the composition of the volcanic vapor, mass and enthalpy balances are applied in a multistep process of steam separation and condensation in shallower aquifers. By comparing the model results with measured data, we infer that (i) strong isotope enrichment observed in some shallow thermal waters can result from an increasing mass rate of condensing deep vapor, even in water meteoric in origin; (ii) the high CO2 content measured in the fumarolic vapor during 1988–1993 affected the δ18O value of the steam-heated water due to CO2–H2O isotope exchange; (iii) the high pCO2 measured in the coldest and peripheral waters are explained by the progressive enrichment of this gas in the vapor phase during multistep boiling; and (iv) the high Cl− and SO4 2−contents in the hottest waters can be attributed to the direct condensation (single-step) of volcanic vapor. The model also takes into account both the mass fluxes and the compositions of the involved endmembers (steam and shallow groundwater), which provides important inferences on the modifications observed or expected during periods of increasing mass and heat input from depth.

    Description: Geophysical granular flows such as pyroclastic flows and rock avalanches kill people and damage properties worldwide. The pressures exerted at their base affect the retarding forces that act on them and, for this reason, affect also their mobility that is important to foresee when assessing natural hazards in mountain regions. Here we present the results of experiments obtained by measuring with a load cell the basal pressures exerted by dry and cohesionless granular flows that descend a curved chute in the laboratory. The interaction between these flows and the chute surface on which they travel is dominated by collisions of particles (and or clusters of particles). A dimensional analysis suggests that the energy dissipation of these flows increases as grain size increases and as flow volume decreases (all the other features equal). Therefore the smaller the grain size and the larger the volume, the larger is expected to be flow mobility. Although, the longer travel distances of the centre of mass of finer grain size flows are easily discernible in our experiments, the effect of volume is probably hidden by additional phenomena such as the deposition first of the frontal part of longer flows on the less-steep more-distal part of the slope that prevents the rear part and the centre of mass of the flows to travel further downhill.

    Description: Rapid mass movement of rock fragments are among the most hazardous natural phenomena. They are too dangerous to be approached and studied directly and, for this reason, experiments are necessary to understand their flow mechanisms. Here, we present the results of experiments on granular flow mobility obtained releasing batches of angular rock fragments down a curved chute. Our experiments demonstrate that the finer the grain size of the flow, the larger its mobility. This is accompanied by a decrease of fragments agitation when grain size decreases as shown by particle image velocimetry measurements of high-speed video camera images. The smaller the agitation, the smaller is also the energy dissipated by flows per unit of travel distance. This explains the effect of finer grain size on flow mobility. These results are an important step towards the prediction of runout distances as a function of the features that characterize the different geophysical flows.

    Description: Spectral properties of volcanic materials in the optical region (350–2500 nm) of the electromagnetic spectrum are analyzed. The goal is to characterize air-fall deposits, recent lava flows, and old lava flows based on their spectral reflectance properties and on the textural characteristics (grain size) of pyroclastic deposits at an active basaltic volcano. Data were acquired during a spectroradiometric field survey at Mt. Etna (Italy) in summer 2003 and combined with hyperspectral satellite (Hyperion) and airborne LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data. In addition, air-fall deposits produced by the highly explosive 2002–2003 eruption have been sampled and spectrally characterized at different distances from the new vents. The spectral analysis shows that air-fall deposits are characterized by low reflectance values besides variations in grain size. This distinguishes them from other surface materials. Old lava flows show highest reflectance values due to weathering and vegetation cover. The spectral data set derived from the field survey has been compared to corrected satellite hyperspectral data in order to investigate the Hyperion capabilities to differentiate the surface cover using the reflectance properties. This has allowed us to identify the 2002–2003 air-fall deposits in a thematic image just few months after their emplacement. Moreover, the observed differences in the field spectra of volcanic surfaces have been compared with differences in the signal intensity detected by airborne LiDAR survey showing the possibility to include information on the texture of volcanic surfaces at Mt. Etna. The approach presented here may be particularly useful for remote and inaccessible volcanic areas and also represents a potentially powerful tool for the exploration of extraterrestrial volcanic surfaces.

    Description: The ocean bottom seismometer with hydrophone deployed on the flat top of the Marsili submarine volcano (790 m deep) by the Gibilmanna OBS Lab (CNT–INGV) from 12th to 21st July, 2006, recorded more than 1000 transient seismic signals. Nineteen of these signals were associated with tectonic earthquakes: 1 teleseismic, 8 regional (located by INGV) and 10 small local seismic events (non located earthquakes). The regional events were used to determine sensor orientation. By comparing the signals recorded with typical volcanic seismic activity, we were able to group all the other signals into three categories: 817 volcano–tectonic type B (VT-B) events, 159 occurrences of high frequency tremor (HFT) and 32 short duration events (SDE). Smallmagnitude VT-B swarms, having a frequency band of 2–6 Hz and a mean length of about 30 s, were almost all recorded during the first 7 days. During the last 2 days, the OBS/H mainly recorded HFT events with frequencies of over 40 Hz and of a few minutes in length. Signals that have similar features in frequency and time domain are generally associated with hydrothermal activity. During the last two days a signal was recorded that had a frequency content similar to that of VT-B events was recorded. It will be referred to as continuous volcanic tremor (CVT). The SDE signals, characterized by a quasi-monochromatic waveform and having an exponential decaying envelope, may have been generated by oscillations of resonant bodies excited by magmatic or hydrothermal activity. By applying polarization and parametric spectral analyses, we inferred that the VT-B were probably multi P-phase events having shallow sources that were situated in narrow azimuthal windows in relation to the positions of the OBS/H. The parametric spectral analysis of the SDE signals allowed us to determine their dominant complex frequencies with high accuracy; these frequencies are distributed in two distinct clusters on the complex plane.

Moreover, a short review about isolation procedures of selected bioactive marine peptides is offered. Novel peptides from sponges, ascidians, mollusks, sea anemones and seaweeds are presented in association with their pharmacological properties and obtainment methods.

    Description: Trough mouth fans are formed by aggradation of glacial debris flows from sediment deposited by fast flowing ice streams extending to the shelf edge. We here present investigations at two sites, ODP Site 1166 on the shelf and ODP Site 1167 drilled on the Prydz Channel Fan in order to contribute to the understanding of Neogene ice flow patterns in Prydz Bay. The mineralogy, wt.% 〉 63 μm, physical and magnetic properties were analyzed. The mineralogy of Neogene strata at Site 1166 can be correlated to nearby ODP Site 742 drilled during Leg 119. Moreover an increase in the shear strength of the sediments (Leg 119 load event 3) is found both at Site 1166 and Site 742. This load event probably indicates that the oldest glacial configuration involved thicker glaciers than the later ones. The results from Site 1167 show that there has been a significant change in the provenance of the sediments during the past 2 million years. The greatest change occurred at about 1.13 Ma and implies a shift in the glacial configuration in Prydz Bay with a greater contribution of material from western parts of the drainage basin during the deposition of Unit II (〉 1.13 Ma; 217–435 mbsf) at Site 1167 on the Prydz Channel Fan.

    Description: In this study, we simulate and compare ground motion shaking in the city of Lisbon and surrounding counties (metropolitan area of Lisbon (MAL)), using two possible earthquake models: the onshore source area of Lower Tagus Valley, M5.7 and M4.7 and the offshore source area, Marques de Pombal Fault, M7.6, one of the possible source of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. The stochastic and a new hybrid stochastic-deterministic approach (DSM) are used in order to evaluate the ground shaking and to characterize its spatial variability. Results are presented in terms of response acceleration spectra (PSA) and peak ground acceleration (PGA) with respect to bedrock andsurface. Site effects are evaluated by means of equivalent stochastic non-linear one-dimensional ground responses analysis, performed for a set of stratified soil profile units properly designed to cope with the soil site conditions of MAL region. A sensitive study is carried out using different input parameters and different approaches in order to give the basic information to evaluate the range of uncertainty in seismic scenarios.

    Description: Bio- and magnetostratigraphic age data and nannofossil assemblage analysis from ODP Site 1165 evidence an anomalous warming event of the surface waters in and around Prydz Bay during the Early Pleistocene, approximately 1 Ma. This results from an increase in the abundance of nannofossils at Site 1165, that occurred at 1 Ma. Detailed high-resolution sampling permits a new bio-magnetostratigraphic interpretation for ODP Site 1165. A decrease in δ18O values at Sites 1165 and 1167 also occurs at this time, supporting the presence of warming conditions in the Prydz Bay area. A return to colder surface waters, indicated by the absence or rare occurrence of nannofossils in the upper cores from Site 1165, suggests that more stable glacial conditions existed in the Prydz Bay basin, for the last 900 ka. The biogenic carbonate sequence identified at Site 1167 is similar to the carbonate shales recovered from the Cape Roberts Project 1. Both have been dated at about 1 Ma, supporting the idea that a significant surface waters warming occurred during the Pleistocene. These data and the presence of calcareous nannofossils from locations around the Antarctic continent also suggest that the warming event was not limited to the analysed basin, but it extended around the East Antarctic continent. These new evidence call for a re-evaluation of the notion that the East Antarctic Ice-Sheet has experienced stable conditions similar to today since the late Neogene.

    Description: During 1999, the volcanic activity at Mt. Etna was both explosive and effusive at the summit craters: Strombolian activity, lava fountains and lava flows affected different areas of the volcano, involving three of the four summit craters. Results from analysis of the 1999 volcanic tremor features are shown at two different time scales. First, the long-term time variation of the features of the volcanic tremor (including spectral and polarization parameters), during the entire year, was compared with the evolution of the eruptive activity. This approach demonstrated the good agreement between tremor data and observed eruptive activity; the activation of different tremor sources was suggested. Then, a more refined analysis of the volcanic tremor, recorded during 14 lava fountain eruptions, was performed. In particular, a shift of the dominant frequencies towards lower values was noted which corresponds with increasing explosive activity. Similar behaviour in the frequency content has already been observed in other explosive eruptions at Mt. Etna as well as on other volcanoes. This behaviour has been explained in terms of either an increase in the tremor source dimension or a decrease in the sound speed in the magma within the conduit. These results confirm that the volcanic tremor is a powerful tool for better understanding the physical processes controlling explosive eruptions at Mt. Etna volcano.

    Description: Antarctic region has profoundly affected the global climates of the Cenozoic, influencing sea levels, atmospheric composition and dynamics, and ocean circulation. According to IPCC-2007 (IPCC, 2007) worst-case scenario projections, global annual mean temperatures by 2100 are likely to exceed those that have been experienced by the Earth in the last 40 myr when the Antarctic Ice Sheet may have first developed. This implies that the Ice Sheet may become unsustainable, with huge implications for global sea levels. A greater understanding of past changes in this region is crucial in forming a better view of future global environmental change and to predict the role of the Antarctic ice sheet in the future. For several decades international efforts have been made to determine the glacial and climate history of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Sediment cores drilled in and around Antarctica have been extracted onboard ships and over the floating perennial ice that borders the ice sheets (e.g., see Florindo et al. (2003b) for a review of the recent history of circum-Antarctic drilling by the Ocean Drilling Program and the Cape Roberts Project, and see Hambrey and Barrett (1993) for a more comprehensive review of earlier drilling in the Ross Sea region). In addition, there have been numerous terrestrial geological expeditions to ice-free areas and nunataks close to the margin of the ice sheet. This special issue of Palaeo3 has developed largely from papers presented in an all day session of presentations and posters at the EGU meeting in Vienna (02–07 April, 2006), and at the XXIX SCAR open science meeting in Hobart, Tasmania (08–20 July, 2006). These papers present results on geoscience data aimed at improving our understanding of the behaviour of the Antarctic Ice Sheet and the climate of the region. Like the past three special issues on the theme of Antarctic Climate Evolution ([Florindo et al., 2003a], Florindo et al., 2005 In: F. Florindo, D.M. Harwood and G.S. Wilson, Editors, Long Term Changes in Southern High-latitude Ice Sheets and Climate, the Cenozoic History, Global and Planetary Change vol. 45 (1–3) (2005), pp. 1–260.[Florindo et al., 2005] and [Barrett et al., 2006]), this special issue is linked to the Antarctic Climate Evolution (ACE) project. It is an initiative of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) to investigate the climate and glacial history of Antarctica by linking climate and ice sheet modelling studies with geophysical surveys and geological studies on and around the Antarctic continent (www.scar.org/researchgroups/geoscience/ace; http://www.ace.scar.org).

    Description: This work is aimed at estimating the sulfur dioxide emission of Mt. Etna volcano (Sicily, Italy) using the thermal infrared images remotely sensed by the Advanced Spacebome Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER). A new procedure (named FUN) is presented based on approximating functions which represent the atmospheric terms of the radiative transfer equation: transmittance, up-welling and down-welling radiances. The parameters of the approximating functions have been computed through the MODTRAN simulations performed using atmospheric monthly mean profiles measured at Trapani (1989-2003). Trapani (WMO station 16429) is located at the western tip of Sicily and is the closest station to Mt. Etna volcano. With these functions MODTRAN is no longer necessary to compute the SO2 abundance in the plume emitted from Mt. Etna and seen by ASTER. Only an atmospheric radiosounding and a digital elevation model (DEM) registered to the ASTER image are required. This new procedure is compared with the known look-up tables (LUT) procedure proposed by other authors. An interesting aspect of the FUN procedure derives from its combined use with a split window (SW) algorithm. In this case only radiosounding is required to compute the SO2 map. The FUN procedure presented in this paper is a rapid, simple and accurate means of generating SO2 map estimates from the ASTER view of Mt. Etna. The proposed scheme can easily be adapted to another sensor and another volcano. In this paper the results from two ASTER images, 19 July 2003 and 29 July 2001, are presented. In July 2003, a ground truth campaign was deployed, SO2 emission was very low (10-25 kg s(-1); Etna baseline is about 50 kg s(-1)). In July 2001, Mt. Etna erupted and a strong SO2 emission (about 140 kg s(-1)) was measured.

    Description: Changes in diatom assemblages and spheroidal carbonaceous particle (SCP) profiles during the last 200 years in 210Pb-dated sediment cores from five remote arctic and sub-arctic lakes in the northern Urals were analysed. The study area covers a large territory from arctic tundra in the north to boreal forest on the western slopes of the Ural mountains in the south. pH was reconstructed using a diatom-based model. The degrees of compositional turn-over and rates-of-change were estimated numerically. The 20th century diatom floristic shifts, the rise in diatom accumulation rates and the rates of diatom compositional change in the northern Ural lakes correlate well with June temperature in the region and with the overall circum-arctic temperature increase from the 1970s. The main driving force behind diatom compositional shifts in the study lakes are the changes in the duration of ice-free season, timing of water turn-over and stratification periods and habitat availability. Changes in spheroidal carbonaceous particles show no pronounced effect on diatom assemblages. Pollution is restricted to regional sources originating mainly from the Vorkuta coal industry. Changes in diatom plankton are more pronounced than changes in diatom benthos. There is no clear north–south gradient in degree of compositional changes, with greatest changes occurring in Lake Vankavad situated in northern boreal forest. The degree of the 20th century diatom changes in Lake Vankavad is greater than in most circum-arctic and sub-arctic lakes from northern Europe and Canada.

    Description: This paper reviews current approaches to the lateral open boundary condition problem for nested regional primitive equation ocean numerical models and proposes a new approach that considers a scale decomposition of the nesting field variables for the barotropic lateral velocity boundary conditions. The Flather [Flather, R.A., 1976. A tidal model of the north-west European continental shelf. Memories de la Societe Royale des Sciences de Liege 6 (10):141–164] open lateral boundary condition is derived from mass conservation considerations and we use this approach to derive a generalized lateral open boundary condition for barotropic velocities. In addition we do a scale selective decomposition of the generalized Flather obtaining new and general lateral scale dependent boundary conditions. The performance of the new lateral boundary conditions have been evaluated in two kinds of experiments: (1) idealized and (2) realistic frameworks. In the idealized framework, as well as the realistic case, the results confirms that the scale selective open boundary conditions improves the solution almost everywhere but in particular in the shallow depth parts of the model domain. In the realistic case the assessment is more difficult and it is connected also to the capability of the nesting and nested model to reproduce the dynamics contained in the observations.

    Description: We conducted detailed rock magnetic investigations on 36m of drill core collected during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 195 at Hole 1202B (24◦48.24 N, 122◦30.00 E), in the Southern Okinawa Trough, with the goal of extracting a reliable paleointensity signal with centennial resolution. An age-depth model was established from a chronology obtained by accelerator mass spectromety 14C dating. The sedimentary section spans almost the entire Holocene (0–9.4 kyr) and exhibits sedimentation rates close to 400 cm/kyr. The magnetic properties are dominated by stable, pseudo-single domain magnetite. High-field hysteresis data and the grain-size sensitive ratio of anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM) to low field magnetic susceptibility indicate a narrow range of grain sizes and concentrations. Magnetic parameters vary by a factor of 4 thereby fulfilling the usual criteria for a relative paleointensity study. The relative geomagnetic paleointensity was obtained by normalizing the intensity of natural remanent magnetization (NRM) by the ARM and the low field magnetic susceptibility. Both normalizations yield nearly identical results (r = 0.89). Spectral analysis indicates that the record is not significantly affected by local environmental conditions. Comparison of thisWest Pacific paleointensity curve with other curves suggests a geomagnetic origin for the signal. Millennial-scale features of our record correlate to variations of the archeomagnetic dipole moment. This suggest that the sediments at Hole1202B recorded changes of the geomagnetic field over the studied time interval.

    Description: Descending and ascending track satellite images of the new European C-band Envisat Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar have been used to detect the surface displacement field during the 26 December 2003, Mw 6.5, Bam earthquake in southeastern Iran and to determine the fault parameters. In this work, displacement field maps have been realized from interferograms for both tracks. The surface displacement pattern from InSAR revealed that slip occurred along an unknown fault. Based on modelling (Okada, 1985), fault parameters with variable slip distribution (geometric and kinematic) have been considered to better reproduce the InSAR pattern. These parameters have been also constrained by the available seismological data. The modelled interferogram versus the unwrapped interferogram shows low residual values for a fault 18 km long, 12 km wide and with a top of the fault plane at 0.5 km from the surface. The best fitting strike, dip and rake are 177◦, 88◦ and 166◦, respectively.

    Description: In the area of a coastal fishing village on the mangrove peninsula of Bragança, State of Pará, North Brazil, coastal changes were observed by a beach profile monitoring programme between 1997 and 2001. The assessment allowed a subdivision of the region into four small coastal cells (1–3 km), partly exhibiting heavy erosion. A number of related socio-economic problems, such as loss of alternative income sources caused by the locally unpredictable erosion patterns were identified in three separate village sections. This results in a year-round dependence on seasonally low fishery incomes and increases the risk of poverty. Since limited options for action are available to the local population, different social groups have evolved different land use patterns, which in turn influence local coastal morphodynamics. Not only the hydrodynamic signature, but also the socio-economic organisation of a coastal community and the co-evolutionary path between these two variables thus indicate the state of a coastal system and the most promising policy actions towards sustainable coastal management.
