Description: This is the first in a series of case studies undertaken by the International Collective in Support of Fishworkers (ICSF) to document the traditional knowledge of fishing communities dependent on marine and coastal resources in protected and conserved areas in different parts of the world. The study, done with the support of the Bay of Bengal Large Marine Ecosystem (BOBLME) project, documents the traditional knowledge of fishing communities in the Gulf of Mannar in the state of Tamil Nadu. It focuses on two fishing villages, Chinnapalam and Bharathi Nagar, whose communities have traditionally depended on Krusadai and Appa Islands for their livelihood. Traditional knowledge relating to oceanographic, meteorological, biological, ecological and navigational aspects of fisheries was documented. The study will be useful for researchers, students, scientists, policymakers, fishworker organizations, NGOs and anyone interested in the traditional knowledge of local fishing communities related to marine biodiversity and the customary use of fisheries resources and fishing practices.

Description: A study was conducted in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital with the objective to investigate if fish trading could be a tool of poverty alleviation and socio-economic enhancement of the status of women in the household. A total of 120 correctly completed, structured and pre-tested questionnaires, out of the 150 administered to respondents, were retrieved for data analyses. Demographic data of the traders showed that all the respondents were women whose ages ranged from 15 to above 45 years. The ages of 33-45 years constituted 33.3% of the respondents while the age bracket of between 27-32 years constituted 23.3%. Majority (73.3%) were married while 25% were single-headed households (divorced or widowed). The study revealed that most of the respondents (approximately 61%) were able to meet their family expenditure jointly with their spouses while 28.3% of the respondents met the financial responsibilities of their families solely from the profit. Access to credit was found to be a major limitation. The study further revealed that 86.7% of the respondents would like to continue with the business because they were satisfied with the profit accruable to them from the trade.

Description: This paper begins with a review of policy issues on status of women’s fundamental human rights and the effects on their optimal participation in fisheries development. The focus of the paper is on the importance of women in fisheries activities within the fisheries industry. Issues pertaining to gender inequality in the rural communities affecting women in the fisheries sector, and solutions to overcome some of these issues are discussed. The degree of participation of women in the fisheries sector is an overall reflection of the cultures, the laws of the country and the priority given by the state to ensure gender equity. Generally, women in Nigeria, especially those from depressed fisheries households, participate actively in many fisheries activities, including aquaculture. However, the lower status accorded to women in many of the communities in Nigeria means that their contribution to fisheries is undervalued and unrecognized. Issues that need to be addressed with regards to participation of women in fisheries which include sensitivity to gender issues in fishery, improve living conditions, promote programs relating to women, reconsidering the practice of relating fishing rights to their right to speak and others are discussed in the paper The paper also looks at the possibilities of articulating measures in sensitizing the womenfolks through education, especially in knowing their fundamental human rights as specified by the UN’s articles, especially ability to access micro-credit in fisheries activities, the nature of loans and alternative strategies to tackle the problem of small-scale credit to women in fisheries development in the nation.

Description: Ifiayong is a small local village market where economically and commercially important fin and shellfishes are landed. It is located very close to the Five Star and Ibom Le Meridian Hotels at Nwaniba beach. Women functioned as transporters, sorters, processors, financiers, distributors and marketers of the thirty-two finfish families, seven shellfish species together with three turtles (reptiles) encountered at the study site. Socio-economic survey revealed that ninety-four women modally aged 46-55years (34; 36.17%) participated in the fisheries and frequently communicated in Efik (40; 42.55%), and were mostly drop-outs (40; 40.56%) in educational level and polygamous (35; 38.30%). The modal family size was 11-15 persons (45; 47.87%) who invested N 41,000 - N 50,000 (28; 29.79%). Problems encountered by these women together with the corresponding solutions and appropriate recommendations proffered were highlighted with the aim of making Ifiayong a revenue generating and tourism centre for Uruan Local Council and Akwa Ibom State Government.

Description: Traditional fish processing technologies vary widely in terms of equipment type, size and processing efficiency in Nigeria's coastal states. This study was carried out to identify fish processing technologies and evaluate the effectiveness, energy sources and efficiency of fish smoking equipment in use in the study area. Data were collected using structured questionnaire administered between January and March, 2011 in seven fishing villages along the coastline in the lbeju-Lekki LGA, Nigeria. Major fish species being processed were identified; and the profitability of the post harvest technologies adopted was evaluated. A total of five traditional fish processing equipment were observed; and included galvanized iron sheet supported by planks 51 (46.4%); drum oven 8 (7.2%); black clay oven 24 (21.8%); red clay oven 9 (8.1%); brick kiln 5 (4.2%) and government model kiln 4 (3.5%). Generally, energy sources were fuel wood and charcoal for traditional fish processing equipment; and electricity for the government model kiln. Majority of traditional fish processors were peasant women; and three types of processing technologies were observed, including air drying (1.0%), hot smoking 169.1%); and salting and smoking (29.9%). The capacity of kilns and ovens observed ranged from 20 to 50kg daily with a price range of Nl0,000 to N50,000. Factors considered before replacement of smoking equipment by the processors were equipment ruggedness, cost and production capacity. Women's involvement in traditional fish processing was 95%; and major fish species in the value chain included Ethmalosa fimbriata, Caranx senegallus, Sardinella maderensis,Drepane africana, Cynoglossus monodis, Pseudotolithus megalensis, P. typus, Arius latiscutatus and A. mercatoris. It was observed that products of traditional fish processing industry were readily acceptable to consumers and commanded marginal market prices with optimal economic benefits to processors.

Description: In many developing countries, active agricultural production takes place in the rural areas. The exploitation of natural fish stocks is reaching limits and aquaculture production has not yet fulfilled its potential despite the large expanse of land in our rural areas. Social and economic indicators for developing countries consistently show that women bear the brunt of hardship in poor communities. The World Bank aims to reduce gender disparities by enhancing women’s participation in economic development. The recent transformation in the country pursues microfinance as a poverty alleviation tool capable of improving the living standard of the rural dwellers to promote their productivity. Globally, women constitute the majority of microfinance clients because of their consistent in their repayment records. In Nigeria about 98% of microfinance institutions are located in the urban areas, which make accessibility difficult for rural dwellers. This paper reveals the need for microfinance institutions in improving fish production through aquaculture, thus enhancing women empowerment and livelihood. The pursuance of this goal will in effect, affect socio-economics of rural women and urban drift of young women in search for greener pasture.

Description: Women are the majority of the third World population. They are considered subservient to their male counterpart, even in Europe and America where women have greater basic human right. This paper evaluates the various roles of women in Fisheries and fish processing. Statistics from the European Union shows that, of the various fishing sectors, participation of women (in terms of number) was greatest in fish processing, followed by marine aquaculture, marine fishing and inland aquaculture, with no women involved in inland fishing. In Asia and Africa women are basically involved in fish processing and marketing. In Asia (Thailand and Philippines), women are involved in hatchery operations in aquaculture in addition to fish processing. The finding of the review shows that Fish processing in developing countries, principally Africa is not attracting young literate generation who may have better management competence. It further revealed that, in Nigeria women are directly involved in capture fishery, in addition to fish marketing and processing. This is aimed at empowering women economically to meet the pressing needs of the family. The paper further assesses the problems of women in fisheries and fish processing namely, access to financial resources, education, support services and the need to ensure food security. Possible ways of improving women’s participation in fisheries were highlighted.

Description: Fisheries activities in 10 communities of Rivers State were investigated to determine the role of women in its development and sustainability. Two hundred structured questionnaires were randomly distributed in three communities (20 per community) across three Local Government Area of the State. The results from the study indicated that young and married women are actively involved in fisheries activities on part-time basis, when compared to the older ones. In the study area, women are mainly involved in the marketing of fishery products than processing or active fishing. Women are more involved in picking of shellfishes such as oyster, periwinkle at low tide than in creeks and rivers. Fish processing in these communities are done mostly by smoking, using a standing oven, which can dry a lot of fish at a time. The marketing strategies adopted by most women in selling their fishery products in the area are open market display and hawking, although, some sell their catch at landing jetties to buyers. Lack of credit facilities, poor transportation network and upsurge in criminal activities have been identified as major constraints facing women involvement in fishery activities in these areas. There is therefore, the need to empower the women fisher folks in these areas through granting of loans and credit facilities, capacity building, introduction of new technologies and improved transport network systems. These will go a long way in boosting fish production, improve their livelihood and enhance socio-economic status of the women fisherfolks in the coastal communities .

Description: The 2011 Tohoku-oki (Mw 9.1) earthquake is so far the best-observed megathrust rupture, which allowed the collection of unprecedented offshore data. The joint inversion of tsunami waveforms (DART buoys, bottom pressure sensors, coastal wave gauges, and GPS-buoys) and static geodetic data (onshore GPS, seafloor displacements obtained by a GPS/acoustic combination technique), allows us to retrieve the slip distribution on a non-planar fault. We show that the inclusion of near-source data is necessary to image the details of slip pattern (maximum slip ,48 m, up to ,35 m close to the Japan trench), which generated the large and shallow seafloor coseismic deformations and the devastating inundation of the Japanese coast. We investigate the relation between the spatial distribution of previously inferred interseismic coupling and coseismic slip and we highlight the importance of seafloor geodetic measurements to constrain the interseismic coupling, which is one of the key-elements for long-term earthquake and tsunami hazard assessment.

Description: The MW 8.8 mega-thrust earthquake and tsunami that occurred on February 27, 2010, offshore Maule region, Chile, was not unexpected. A clearly identified seismic gap existed in an area where tectonic loading has been accumulating since the great 1835 earthquake experienced and described by Darwin during the voyage of the Beagle. Here we jointly invert tsunami and geodetic data (InSAR, GPS, land-level changes), to derive a robust model for the co-seismic slip distribution and induced co-seismic stress changes, and compare them to past earthquakes and the pre-seismic locking distribution. We aim to assess if the Maule earthquake has filled the Darwin gap, decreasing the probability of a future shock . We find that the main slip patch is located to the north of the gap, overlapping the rupture zone of the MW 8.0 1928 earthquake, and that a secondary concentration of slip occurred to the south; the Darwin gap was only partially filled and a zone of high pre-seismic locking remains unbroken. This observation is not consistent with the assumption that distributions of seismic rupture might be correlated with pre-seismic locking, potentially allowing the anticipation of slip distributions in seismic gaps. Moreover, increased stress on this unbroken patch might have increased the probability of another major to great earthquake there in the near future.
