Beschreibung: Here we present the concentrations of inorganic nutrients, dissolved organic carbon, nitrogen and phophorus and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) from discrete water samples collected with a CTD-rosette during the European Iron Fertilization Experiment (EIFEX). The experiment was carried out from February 11 to March 20, 2004 in the 60-km diameter, rotating core of an eddy, formed by a meander of the Antarctic Polar Front (centred at around 49°10' S and 2°10' E). Samples were taken within the eddy inside and outside the fertilized patch, and in a few cases outside the eddy. Inorganic nutrients (silicate, phosphate, nitrate, nitrite and ammonium) were measured with a Technicon Autoanalyser II system using standard methods. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was determined by high temperature combustion using a TOC-VCPH/CPN (Shimadzu) according to Skoog et al. (1997). Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) was measured on an Evolution continuous flow analyser (Alliance Instruments) after Valderrama (1981). Dissolved inorganic carbon was measured by coulometric titration (Johnson et al., 1987) using a SOMMA system with gas loop calibration with a reproducibility of 2 mmol/kg. DIC was calibrated against certified reference materials from Andrew Dickson at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO).

Beschreibung: The CTD data on cruise M164 contain oceanic measurements of temperature, salinity, oxygen and pressure at 126 stations. The data were collected with the research vessel Meteor during cruise M164: Region: subpolar North Atlantic, 9°W-47°W, 45°N-53°N; Ports: Emden - Emden; Date: June 23 - July 31, 2020 . The data where collected by a CTD device of type SBE 9. The CTD was mounted to a metal frame with 22 water sample bottles, which was lowered from the sea surface down to 10 m above the seafloor. The sampling frequency was 24 Hz, the raw data were then interpolated on 1 dbar intervals. Salinity and oxygen data from the CTD were calibrated by comparison with samples from the water bottles. The bottle salinity was analysed by a salinometer of type Guildline Autosal 8400A, bottle oxygen samples by Winkler titration. The accuracy of the calibrated CTD measurements is: 1 dbar for pressure, 0.001 °C for temperature, 0.0025 for salinity, 3.0 µmol/kg for oxygen. Detailed information can be found in the cruise report: https://doi.org/10.48433/cr_m164.

Beschreibung: Raw data acquired by two thermosalinographs (SBE21, SeaBird GmbH) on board RV Polarstern were processed to yield a calibrated and validated data set of temperature, conductivity and salinity during expedition PS122/4. Both sensors were equipped with a more accurate external temperature sensor (SBE38, Sea-Bird GmbH). Data were downloaded from the DAVIS SHIP data base (https://dship.awi.de) with a resolution of 1 sec. The raw hex data were converted to temperature and conductivity while a sensor drift correction was applied using calibration coefficients from before and after the expedition. Salinity was calculated according to the instructions from the Practical Salinity Scale PSS-78, using the obtained (internal) temperature and conductivity data and a pressure of 11 dbar which represents the water depth of the inlet of the TSG system on Polarstern. Processed data are provided as 10min means of salinity and water temperature aligned with position data taken from master track of the respective cruise. A speed filter was not applied to the PS122 dataset because of the slow drift speed. This slow movement may lead to an overestimation of the mixed-layer temperature; in particular, small heat fluxes from the ship may raise the temperature in adjacent water in the lee, i.e. during times of drift in the direction opposite to the TSG inlet. The effect is expected to be small, but can potentially be higher than the accuracy of the temperature measurement. Further details and evaluation of the data is outlined in the data processing report found at the EPIC repository under URL (https://hdl.handle.net/10013/epic.7fffb528-06bd-48ae-8489-cea0444c4eab).

Beschreibung: At the end of the summer 2021, an increase in CO2 emissions at Vulcano brought to an increase in the alert level and, as a consequence, to the upgrade of the monitoring activities by increasing the number of instruments deployed and the rate of the surveys. One of the new devices installed was a geodetic GNSS mobile network for a Real-Time and High-Frequency monitoring of ground deformation, to increase the detail with respect to the existing permanent network. The whole dataset provided here, consists of 1022 files for a total of 13GB of GNSS RINEX raw data. The GNSS data archive is organized in 4 folders, one for each station, named with the site abbreviation (namely, VCAM, VCOA, VCST and VPRT). Within each folder, there are all the raw data files for that station, one for each day of acquisition. Names of the files are structured following the RINEX 3 standard, the first 4 digits being the station code, that is an S and the last 3 digits of the receiver serial number. The date of acquisition is given by the 11 digits in the central part of the name, in the format YYYYDDDHHMM; namely, 4 digits for the year, followed by 3 digits for the day of the year (from 1 to 365 or 366 for leap years) and then 2 digits for the hour and 2 for the minute of the starting time.

Beschreibung: Current velocities of the upper water column along the cruise track of R/V Alkor cruise AL593 were collected by a vessel-mounted 600 kHz RDI Workhorse ADCP. The ADCP transducer was located at 4.2 m below the water line. The instrument was operated in high-res., shallow water profiling mode (WM 12) with a bin size of 0.50 m, a blanking distance of 0.88 m, and a total of 90 bins, covering the depth range between 5.7 m and 50.2 m. Four consecutive pings were considered to form one ensemble average. Beam velocities as recorded by the data acquisition software WinRiver2 were transformed to ship coordinates and after merging with the navigation data from the ship's gyro compass and Global Positioning systems into earth coordinates. Single-ping data were screened for bottom signals and, where appropriate, a bottom mask was manually processed. The ADCP was configured to measure bottom-track velocities, which were converted from beam to earth coordinates in the same manner as the water profile velocities. For each ping, the bottom-track velocity components were subtracted from the velocity profile to eliminate the ship movements and obtain true water velocities. The velocity data were averaged in time using an average interval of 60 s. Velocity quality flagging is based on different threshold criteria: Depth cells with ensemble-averaged percent-good values below 25% are marked as 'bad data'. Depth cells with velocities above 1.0 m/s are flagged as 'bad data'. Depth cells with a root-mean-square deviation between the measured ensemble-average velocity and a cell-wise running-mean velocity above 0.3 m/s are flagged as 'probably bad data'.

Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology, 376(1), 26-36, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jembe.2009.05.017

Beschreibung: The effect of pCO2 on carbon acquisition and intracellular assimilation was investigated in the three bloom-forming diatom species, Eucampia zodiacus (Ehrenberg), Skeletonema costatum (Greville) Cleve, Thalassionema nitzschioides (Grunow) Mereschkowsky and the non-bloom-forming Thalassiosira pseudonana (Hust.) Hasle and Heimdal. In vivo activities of carbonic anhydrase (CA), photosynthetic O2 evolution, CO2 and HCO3? uptake rates were measured by membrane-inlet mass spectrometry (MIMS) in cells acclimated to pCO2 levels of 370 and 800 ?atm. To investigate whether the cells operate a C4-like pathway, activities of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RubisCO) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) were measured at the mentioned pCO2 levels and a lower pCO2 level of 50 ?atm. In the bloom-forming species, extracellular CA activities strongly increased with decreasing CO2 supply while constantly low activities were obtained for T. pseudonana. Half-saturation concentrations (K1/2) for photosynthetic O2 evolution decreased with decreasing CO2 supply in the two bloom-forming species S. costatum and T. nitzschioides, but not in T. pseudonana and E. zodiacus. With the exception of S. costatum, maximum rates (Vmax) of photosynthesis remained constant in all investigated diatom species. Independent of the pCO2 level, PEPC activities were significantly lower than those for RubisCO, averaging generally less than 3%. All examined diatom species operate highly efficient CCMs under ambient and high pCO2, but differ strongly in the degree of regulation of individual components of the CCM such as Ci uptake kinetics and extracellular CA activities. The present data do not suggest C4 metabolism in the investigated species.

    Publikationsdatum: 2024-07-08
Beschreibung: We investigated carbon acquisition by the N2-fixing cyanobacterium Trichodesmium IMS101 in response to CO2 levels of 15.1, 37.5, and 101.3 Pa (equivalent to 150, 370, and 1000 ppm). In these acclimations, growth rates as well as cellular C and N contents were measured. In vivo activities of carbonic anhydrase (CA), photosynthetic O2 evolution, and CO2 and HCO3- fluxes were measured using membrane inlet mass spectrometry and the 14C disequilibrium technique. While no differences in growth rates were observed, elevated CO2 levels caused higher C and N quotas and stimulated photosynthesis and N2 fixation. Minimal extracellular CA (eCA) activity was observed, indicating a minor role in carbon acquisition. Rates of CO2 uptake were small relative to total inorganic carbon (Ci) fixation, whereas HCO{3 contributed more than 90% and varied only slightly over the light period and between CO2 treatments. The low eCA activity and preference for HCO3- were verified by the 14C disequilibrium technique. Regarding apparent affinities, half-saturation concentrations (K1/2) for photosynthetic O2 evolution and HCO3- uptake changed markedly over the day and with CO2 concentration. Leakage (CO2 efflux : Ci uptake) showed pronounced diurnal changes. Our findings do not support a direct CO2 effect on the carboxylation efficiency of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RubisCO) but point to a shift in resource allocation among photosynthesis, carbon acquisition, and N2 fixation under elevated CO2 levels. The observed increase in photosynthesis and N2fixation could have potential biogeochemical implications, as it may stimulate productivity in N-limited oligotrophic regions and thus provide a negative feedback in rising atmospheric CO2 levels.

Beschreibung: Recent studies on the diazotrophic cyanobacterium Trichodesmium erythraeum(IMS101) showed that increasing CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) enhances N2 fixation and growth. Significant uncertainties remain as to the degree of the sensitivity to pCO2, its modification by other environmental factors, and underlying processes causing these responses. To address these questions, we examined the responses ofTrichodesmium IMS101 grown under a matrix of low and high levels of pCO2 (150 and 900 µatm) and irradiance (50 and 200 µmol photons m-2 s-1). Growth rates as well as cellular carbon and nitrogen contents increased with increasing pCO2 and light levels in the cultures. The pCO2-dependent stimulation in organic carbon and nitrogen production was highest under low light. High pCO2 stimulated rates of N2fixation and prolonged the duration, while high light affected maximum rates only. Gross photosynthesis increased with light but did not change with pCO2. HCO3- was identified as the predominant carbon source taken up in all treatments. Inorganic carbon uptake increased with light, but only gross CO2 uptake was enhanced under high pCO2. A comparison between carbon fluxes in vivo and those derived from 13C fractionation indicates high internal carbon cycling, especially in the low-pCO2treatment under high light. Light-dependent oxygen uptake was only detected underlow pCO2 combined with high light or when low-light-acclimated cells were exposed to high light, indicating that the Mehler reaction functions also as a photoprotective mechanism in Trichodesmium. Our data confirm the pronounced pCO2 effect on N2fixation and growth in Trichodesmium and further show a strong modulation of these effects by light intensity. We attribute these responses to changes in the allocation of photosynthetic energy between carbon acquisition and the assimilation of carbon and nitrogen under elevated pCO2. These findings are supported by a complementarystudy looking at photosynthetic fluorescence parameters of photosystem II, photosynthetic unit stoichiometry (photosystem I:photosystem II), and pool sizes of key proteins in carbon and nitrogen acquisition.

Beschreibung: The exponential growth of studies on the biological response to ocean acidification over the last few decades has generated a large amount of data. To facilitate data comparison, a data compilation hosted at the data publisher PANGAEA was initiated in 2008 and is updated on a regular basis (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.149999). By January 2015, a total of 581 data sets (over 4 000 000 data points) from 539 papers had been archived. Here we present the developments of this data compilation five years since its first description by Nisumaa et al. (2010). Most of study sites from which data archived are still in the Northern Hemisphere and the number of archived data from studies from the Southern Hemisphere and polar oceans are still relatively low. Data from 60 studies that investigated the response of a mix of organisms or natural communities were all added after 2010, indicating a welcomed shift from the study of individual organisms to communities and ecosystems. The initial imbalance of considerably more data archived on calcification and primary production than on other processes has improved. There is also a clear tendency towards more data archived from multifactorial studies after 2010. For easier and more effective access to ocean acidification data, the ocean acidification community is strongly encouraged to contribute to the data archiving effort, and help develop standard vocabularies describing the variables and define best practices for archiving ocean acidification data.

Beschreibung: First- and second-year sea-ice thickness, draft, salinity, temperature, and density were measured during two ice stations on 24 October 2022 and 30 October 2022 during leg 1 of the GoNorth 2022 expedition. The ice cores were extracted with 7.25-cm (Mark III) internal diameter ice corers (Kovacs Enterprise, US). During each ice station, ice temperature was measured in situ from a separate temperature core, using Ebro TFX 410 Thermometer thermometers in drill holes with a length of half-core-diameter at 5 cm vertical resolution. Ice bulk practical salinity was measured from melted core sections at 5 cm resolution using a Mettler Toledo SevenGo conductivity meter. Sea ice density was measured using the hydrostatic weighing method (Pustogvar and Kulyakhtin, 2016) from several density cores in the freezer laboratory onboard RV Kronprins Haakon at the temperature from –10°C to –14°C. Relative volumes of brine and gas were estimated from ice salinity, temperature, and density using Cox and Weeks (1983) for cold ice and Leppäranta and Manninen (1988) for ice warmer than –2°C. This sea ice physics data was collected during leg 1 of the GoNorth 2022 scientific expedition on 14 October – 3 November 2022 (cruise number 2022713) on the RV Kronprins Haakon. The ice cores were collected at two ice stations (Station 6 and Super Station 14) located at 82°13.56' N and 26°41.43' E for the first and 82°31.05' N and 17°30.04' E for the second sea ice station in the area north of Svalbard. The data contains the event label (1), station (2), time (3), global coordinates (4,5) of each coring measurement, ice type (11), and sample ID (12). Each core has its manually measured ice thickness (6), ice draft (7), snow height (8), and local coordinates for each ice station (7,8). Each core section has the total length of its top (13) and bottom (14) measured in situ. Each core section has the value of its practical salinity (15), each core section of a temperature core has the value of its in situ temperature (16), and each core section of density cores has the value of its ice density (18). Each core section also has laboratory temperature (17), an estimate of brine volume fraction (19), and gas volume fraction (20).

Beschreibung: Raw data acquired by two thermosalinographs (SBE21, SeaBird GmbH) on board RV Polarstern were processed to yield a calibrated and validated data set of temperature, conductivity and salinity during expedition PS122/3.

Beschreibung: Fatty acid (FA) composition has increasingly been used to estimate the dietary preference of marine organisms. Specific fatty acids and fatty acid ratios serve as trophic markers (FATM) and have the potential to provide insights on the long-term dietary preference of organisms. FATM have been applied for this purpose on various zooplankton, fish and up to whales. We aim to build up a database of new and published data on fatty acid content of mesopelagic fish and their predators from the central and Northeast Atlantic, and the Mediterranean Sea, to use in FATM food web studies, investigating the importance of mesopelagic organisms as predators and prey in the marine ecosystem. Here we compiled FA content (i.e., the proportion of each FA measured in sampled tissues or in the whole body of organisms in relation to total FAs analysed) of 36 fish species or genera, 15 seabirds, five marine mammals, two cephalopods, one turtle, one jelly fish, and one shark. For each record, we included all FAs with values above 0.1% of total FAs and report the percentage values as provided in the original data source. Each data record is associated with information on the sampling location, geographic coordinates, month and year of sample collection, method of sample collection, taxonomic ranks (phylum, class, order, family), number and size (or size range) of sampled organisms, as well as the reference and DOI of the original data source, for further details on the samples analysed and/or the analytical techniques used.

Beschreibung: The ²³⁴Th-²³⁸U radioactive pair has been extensively used to evaluate the efficiency with which photosyntetically fixed carbon is exported from the surface ocean by means of the biological pump since the 90's. The seminal work of Buesseler et al. (1992) proposed that particulate organic carbon (POC) flux can be indirectly calculated from ²³⁴Th distributions if the ratio of POC to ²³⁴Th measured on sinking particles (POC:²³⁴Th) at the desired export depth is known. Since then, a huge amount of ²³⁴Th depth profiles have been collected using a variety of sampling instruments and strategies that have changed along years. This is a global oceanic compilation of ²³⁴Th measurements, that collects results from innumerable researchers and laboratories over a period exceeding 50 years. The present compilation is made of a total 223 datasets: 214 from studies published either in articles in referred journals, PhD thesis or repositories, and 9 unpublished datasets. Including measurements from JGOFS, VERTIGO and GEOTRACES programs, with sampling from approximately 5000 locations spanning all the oceans. The compilation includes total ²³⁴Th profiles, dissolved and particulate ²³⁴Th concentrations, and POC:²³⁴Th ratios (both from pumps and sediment traps) for two sizes classes (1-53 μm and 〈 53 μm) when available. Appropriate metadata have been included, including geographic location, date, and sample depth, among others. When available, we also include water temperature, salinity, ²³⁸U data and particulate organic nitrogen data. Data sources and methods information (including ²³⁸U and ²³⁴Th) are also detailed along with valuable information for future data analysis such as bloom stage and steady/non-steady state conditions at the sampling moment. This undertaking is a treasure of data to understand and quantify how oceanic carbon cycle functions and how it will change in future. The compilation can be downloaded in three different ways: 1) A single merged file including all the individual excel files. This option can be accessed under "Other version: More than 50 years of Th-234 data: a comprehensive global oceanic compilation (single xlsx file)". 2) A summary table that includes details from cruise, sampling dates, techniques applied, authors and DOI of the compiled ²³⁴Th data, among others, each line corresponds to a specific dataset. The table can be accessed by clicking ""View dataset as HTML" and downloaded in "Download dataset as tab-delimited text". 3) Individual Excel files for each dataset can be manually chosen from the summary table, corresponding to the complete ²³⁴Th dataset and metadata from a specific publication or program. This option is available by clicking "View dataset as HTML". Furthermore, all files referred to can be downloaded in one go as ZIP or TAR.

Beschreibung: Particle number size distributions (PNSD) in the mobility diameter range of 10 nm to 800 nm were measured using a Mobility Particle Size Spectrometer (MPSS, TROPOS-built; Wiedensohler et al., 2012). During HALO–(AC)³, the MPSS was situated in the aerosol rack (with a compact filter sampler and a miniature CCN counter) onboard Polar 6 and permanently connected to the standard aerosol inlet (Leaitch et al., 2016). Near isokinetic sampling was established for the majority of the flight time by restricting the total aerosol flow through the sampling line (outer diameter 0.75 inch) with the help of a valve. With this, an upper cut-off diameter of roughly 4 µm could be achieved. Each scan of the entire particle size range took approximately 5 min. Data are provided as bin-wise log-normal particle number (dN/dlogDp) for P6 RF01–13. For each of the 40 size bins, the bin's midpoint diameter (Dp) is given. The start and end of each scan is given. Each PNSD was integrated over all Dp to obtain the total particle number concentration (Ntotal). A data flag is given to indicate when sampling was under near-isokinetic conditions. For each scan, the given geolocation is the centroid of P6's flighttrack within the scan's duration. Analogous, the given altitude is the mean altitude of P6 over each scan's duration. All concentration values have been corrected to standard conditions (1013.0 hPa and 273.15 K).
