    Notizen: Four independent techniques for quantitatively calibrating an energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence system are compared. These include commercially available powder standards, vacuum deposited standards, laboratory developed powder standards and a semi-theoretical method. A technique is presented for using the latter method in the case where the exciting radiation is bremsstrahlung. These methods are discussed and their resulting efficiency values compared. The most complete, most reliable and easiest method is the semi-theoretical method. Single compound powders of standard chemicals can be used one at a time for periodic checks of the system.

    Notizen: Theoretical to formulae for the fluoresent X-ray intenisty are obtained and calculations made for nickel + iron + chromium binary and tertiary systems. In the calculation, the continous X-ray of the irradiating source should be taken into account. The theoretical results agree well with the experimental results but have maximum deviations of 1% and it is thought that the error may be due to coexistent elements. The effect of the coexistent elements can be estimated by theoretical calculation and in routine work the effects are usually expressed as linear expansion factors. These factors are generally obtained from a series of experiments but they can be easily obtained by calculation. The errors caused by the linear approximation are also estimated and it is concluded that the approximation is approved in routine analysis of steels when the composition ranges of the steel type are limited by industrial standards.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Measurement of the extracellular fluid volume (ECFV) in the human body is an useful means of recognizing pathological conditions. X-ray fluorescence spectrometry allows a simple and accurate determination of the difusion space of bromide ions, from which the ECFV value can be calculated. The method consists of the quantitative determination of stable bromine (80Br) at low concentration in biological fluids, using the Br Kα line. A simultaneous study run with a radioactive tracer (82Br) allowed us to check the validity of the procedure.
    Notizen: Le volume de liquide extracellualaire (LEC) chez l'homme estun parameétre important pour la deétection de certins eétats pathologiques. La spectromeétrie de fluorescence X permet de mesurer avec une bonne preécision I'espace de deffusion de I'ion bromure et d'en deédrire la valeur du volume de LEC. La meéthode consiste en un dosage direct du brome stabel (80Br) à faible concentration dans les liquides biologiques, en utilisant la raie Br Kα Une étude paralleéle au moyen d'un radiotraceur (82Br)permet de tester la valcur de la meéthode.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: This article describes the quantitative determination of phases in polished silicate samples by means of energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis. The scanning electron microsope that was used, is equipped with a semiconductor detector for energy dispersive X-ray measurements and with a special detector for the production of backscattered electron images. The precision of the instrument used and the limit of detection obtainable were determined. The concerntration of the elements was calculated by means of Salter's empirical formula, using binary oxide systems and pure oxides as standards. The microanalysis of cement clinker is discussed.
    Notizen: In diesem Artikel wird als Beitrag zur Elektronenstrahlmikroanalyse eine quantitaive röntgenographische Analyse von Phasen in polierten Anschliffen von Silikatproben beschrieben. Für die energiedispersive Messung der Röntgenstrahlung ist das Raster Elektronenmikrosk op mit einem Halbleitermessplatz und für Die Bilderzeugung mit einem Halbeitermessplatz und fü die Genauigkeit der Anlage und die damit erreichbare Nachweisgrenze werden bestimmt. Die Berechung der Konzentration wied nach einer von Salter vorgeschlagenen vorschrift mit Hilfe von binären Oxidsystemen und renien Oxiden als Standardproben berechnet. Als analytisches Bisipiel für die Elektronenstrahlmikroanalyse wurde ein Zementklinker gewählt.

    Notizen: The amount of material usually required for X-ray fluorescene analysis of briquetted rock powders is of the order of 2 to 3 g. By reducing the diameter of the pellets and the cross-section of the incident X-ray beam, it is possible to analyse a small quantity of material (about 40 mg) reliably. The results obtained from the analysis of about 40 mg of powder for the major components (MgO, Al2O33, SiO2, P2O5, K2O, CaO, TiO2, MnO, Fe2O3) and for 12 trace elements (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Rb, Sr, Zr, La, Ce, Ba, Pb) in 6 standard samples of rocks (US Geological Survey Standards: G-2, GSP-1, AGV-1, BCR-1, DTS-1 and PCC-1) are reported. These data are compared with those obtained from standard pellets and from literature values.

The method is a simple empirical correction procedure and requires only one standard containing all the elements analyzed. Moreover, the method does not require prior determination of correction factors obtained by a complex calculation, a multiple regression procedure, or from use of a considerable number of well analyzed standards.

    Notizen: This paper reports on expeeriments to determine the composition of thin aluminium + nickel films. The techniques used were similar to those described by both Rhodin and Weyl but for reasons of simplification of the calculations involved, the effective wavelength concept was employed. Fluorescence measurements were also made on aluminium + nickel powder compacts of known composition. The comparison of measured intensities from powder compacts and thin films revealed a strong particle size intensity dependence.

    Notizen: In X-ray fluorescence, as well as other quantitative methods for determining trace metal concentrations, computer methods for extracting characteristic peaks from background are very important. Cases where background is large and nonlinear, or there are overlapping peaks, present difficulties in the development of simple computer programs which give an accurate analysis of the peak. The method of analysis that will be described here was developed to meet these demands. The basic concept is simple, and good accuracy and reproducibility are achieved in samples with large nonlinear background, as well as overlapping peaks. The analysis is essentially independent of background.

    Notizen: The pulsed beam technique has been used to achieved a high data acuumulation rate in an energy-dispersive analytical system consisting of an electron probe analyser and the Harwell ‘Highspec’ pulse analyser system 3074. The use of fast beam switching ( ∼ 30 ns transient time) and the special timing facilities available in the Harwell equipment reduce the spectrum contamination due to displacement of the probe during switching to a low level and also provide precise measurements of live time, essential for accurate analysis. Analyses performed at spectrum accumulation rate of up to 12 kP.P.S. shows agreement with accepted values to within ± 1% for major constituents. Simple modification of the system permits accumulation rates up to 25 kP.P.S.

    Notizen: The results are presented of an intercomparison study between twelve investigators and three analytical techniques. The objective was to determine the precision and accuracy with which multi-element analysis of air particulates on filters can be accomplished using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. Special emphasis was placed on testing calibration techniques and methods of correction for absorption in both particulate deposits and substrates. Results indicate that errors in calibration and correcting for substrate absorption can be reduced to much less than 10% for elements K and above, but the more work is required to test methods of correcting for particles size to achieve 10% accuracy at energies below 3 keV.

    Notizen: This work is aimed at providing a direct analytical method for powdered materials collected on cellulose filters. The origin and composition of these materials may be very different. The analytical technique employed was X-ray fluorescence spectrometry without preliminary treatment of samples.It is known that different thickness of thin deposits, due for example to different sampling condition, cause some difficulties on the correct accomplishment of the analysis. To eliminate this drawback the basic principles characterising the behaviour of X-ray penetration in the matter, were developed, thus leading to some equations, applicable to the analysis of the following kinds of samples: (a) sample of infinite thickness for X-ray penetration; (b) sample of finite thickness below the critical value; (c) sample of infinite thickness placed over the sample of finite thickness.The equation relating to case (c) was then applied to the analysis of powdered materials collected on cellulose filters.A suitable plate of a selected metal was placed over the sample, and the fluorescence radiations intensity values of the element to be analysed were recorded together with the intensity of the radiation emitted by the plate.By substituting some terms of the above mentioned equation with experimental data, X-ray intensity values were corrected, and then independent measurements were performed on the sample thickness.This work described both the theoretical part and the experimental procedures with results showing the method's reliability.

    Notizen: Fluorescence crossed effects are discussed as to their exact significance, and relative importance regarding quantitative analysis. While they do not occur in binary systems, crossed effects appear when a fluorescent element is influenced by two or more interfering elements, more particularly when it is subject to enhancement effects. Dissociating crossed effects from pure binary interactions enabled us to establish an accurate general equation for expressing interelement effects in accordance with fundamental theory, and then the associated corrections in any analytical system. As a rule, practical applications should include some suitable modification of the general formula, with respect to the magnitude of corrections for the particularsystem considered.

    Notizen: The problem presented by a multiphase metal system is studied, where one element is able to migrate from one phase of the alloy to another due to different states of heat treatment. The experimental work was performed on the simple Al + Si system; the results demonstrate that in extreme cases relative analytical errors of 400% may be accumulated if the ‘metallurgical history’ of sample and standard is neglected. The Claisse-Samson particle size formulae for powder samples are applied to the grain size of the phases present in the allows with good agriment, and may be used to predict whether analytical problems are to be expected.

The method is based on the use of Campton Scattering as an internal standard, and on a comparison of the unknown with a blank and with a standard solution. A correction procedure has been devised which takes into account the dependence of the analysis on the carbon-hydrogen ration of the gasoline. The method has an accuracy, for a single measurement, of ± 0.002 at the 0.002 g/U.S. gal. level to ± 0.1 at the 5 g/U.S. gal. level.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: An automatic device for preparing samples for X-ray fluorescence analysis is described. Based on a fusion technique with the proper flux, it produces glass buttons which can lbe directly analysed with the spectrometer.The apparatus consists essntially of two high frequency furnaces which are used for fusing the samples and casting the beads, respectively. The corresponding vessels, i.e. crucible and mould, and made of a special platinum + gold + rhodium alloy. The automatic preparation sequence lasts eight minutes.The preparation reproducibility which can be achieved with this device is illustrated by an application to the analysis of high grade iron ores dissolved in sodium tetraborate. The standard deviation obtained for iron is 0.15% at a 60% iron level.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: The loss of X-ray fluorescene intensity caused by an imperfect absorption of the primary beam in specimen which are mainly composed of light elements (for example: aqueous liquids, scoriae, minerals and rock samples) is derived and its practical measurement is described. The corrections start in the range of the K spectra near Rb (Z=37) at a few per cent and increase rapidly towards Ba (Z=56). The correction factor for all elements in question can be derived from one diagram by interpolation. To accomplish the correction it is necessary to know the matrix factor and the weight of the specimen; no additional preparation is necessary.
    Notizen: Die Strahlendurchlässigkeit Von Proben mit vormiegend leichten Elementen (z.B.wässrige Lösungen, Schlacken, Mineralund Gesteinsproben) führt zu Fluoreszenzatrahlungsverlusten, die unter Berücksichtingung der Strahlengeometric berechnet Werden und deren praktische Messung beschrieben wird. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die erforderlichen Korrekturen im Bereich der K-Spektren etwa beim Element Rb (Z=37)mit maximal einigen %einsetzen und zum Ba (Z=56) hin rasch ansteigen, Durch Interpolation lassen sich alle in Frage kommenden Elemente an Hand einer einzigen Korrekturtafel erfassen, Die Durchfuhrung der Korrektur verlangt die Kenntnis des Matrixfaktors und des Probengewichtes und des Probengewichtes und erfordert keine zäsatzliche präparation.

    Notizen: Liebhafsky and Zemany proposed two terms in X-ray emission analysis: one is the linear thickness of a specimen below which the absorption effect vanishes; the other is the critical thickness of a specimen above which the specimen becomes infinitely thick. The criteria for these two terms are defined here in quantitative terms. A procedure for making thin films of closely controlled thickness is described. The sample is dispersed into a film-forming polymer solution which contains an internal standard element. A thin film is made of this suspensoid by a film applicator. The internal standard element is used to correct for variation in actual film thickness. A single calibration curve can be used for samples of different matrices. Experimental data are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of this thin-film method in eliminating matrix effects.

    Notizen: The commonly used equation relating the intensity of characteristic X-radiation to the concentration of the element to be determined contains three unknowns. By chanfing the concentration of this element in two additionally prepared samples further data are obained permitting the derivation of two more equations. Solution of these three equations by algebraic or graphical methods yields the concentration of the elemen. Formulae have been derived desribing ten experimental variants of this principle. Three of these formulae are similar to those described by sherman and Tertian. The other two describe the semi-emipirical methods of addition, and mixing-dilution developed by Jones.The experimental data for eleven elements involving ten kα lines, two Kβ lines and one Lα line were obtained using two X-ray units. The samples were investigated in the form cf liquid, powder pellet, glass disc and powdered glass disc. Only the three most general formulae have used in the calculations. Results show absolute percentage deviations within 1 to 3%.

    Notizen: Hematite ore fractions in the form of circulating slurries of various solids content were analyzed for iron and silicon, their principal metallic constituents, to determine the relationships and factors significant to such analyses. Radioisotopes were used to excite the characteristic radiations which were measured nondispersively. Counts were also taken for the exciting radiations.The measured intensities for Fe Kα and Si Kα were corrected by backscatter and absorption factors derived by the comparison of counts from the slurries to those from water. Regression lines were used to convert all counts to a 40% solid basis.The iron content of the ore fractions was determined with a standard error of less than 2%. The determination of silicon was not satisfactory at low concentrations because all components of the slurries absorb Si Kα strongly.

    Notizen: A method for rapid and accurate X-ray fluorescence analysis of a wide variety of slags from the copper producing industries has been developed. The samples are fused in a sodium tetraborate + lanthanum oxide flux with sodium nitrate added to ensure oxidizing conditions in the melt. Nine elements have been investigated, namely Cu, Zn, Fe, Si, Al, Pb, Sn, Ni and S. It has been found that simple linear calibrations give accurate results for most elements, but in the case of Cu, Zn, and Ni a correction procedure based on secondary mass absorption coefficients may sometimes be necessary.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: The determination of film thicknesses by XRFA is known from the literature. In most cases these methods are based on a comparison with defined reference films. Together with theoretical considerations a new method is developed, where no reference films are needed. An estimation on the accuracy of this method and measurements used in an energy dispersive system are discussed, and the method is evaluated.

Les spectres polarisés de basse fréquence ont été étudiés de 300 à 30K; mais à cause d'une dépolarisation accidentelle apparaissant à basse température, ce travail a été principalement effectué à 300K. Les vibrations externes ont été attribuées à l'aide de la théorie des groupes et de l'influence des liaisons hydrogène sur les mouvements des couches moléculaires: librations Ag-Bg à 41.6-64.8, 83.5-42.4 et 130 cm-1 translations parallèles aux couches à 79 et 94 cm-1, normales aux couches à 144 cm-1. Quelques bandes infrarouges ont été observées et attribuées.
    Notizen: Low frequency polarized spectra were investigated from 300 to 30K; but, as accidental depolarization arises at low temperature, study was chiefly made at 300K. External vibrations have been assigned using group theory and the influence of hydrogen bonds on the motions of the molecular layers: Ag-Bg librations at 41.6-64.8, 83.5-42.4 and 130cm-1, translations in-plane at 79 and 94, out-of-plane at 144 cm-1, owing to layers. Some infrared bands have been observed and assigned.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Using the ‘reflexion approximation’, an analytical expression for the Raman scattering tensor of diatomic and polyatomic molecules is proposed, that is valid for every exciting frequency. The influence of the symmetry of the vibrations on the resonance Raman intensities is also discussed. The expression of the scattering tensor justifies the assumption of a Gaussian shape of the absorption curves of polyatomic molecules. The relative intensities of the overtones is then discussed as a function of the absorption coefficient. Using an asymptotic development, the agreement between this theory and earlier ones of preresonance Raman effect is shown.In an appendix, it is shown how, using the resolvent formalism, the preresonant Raman tensor for the fundamental bands and overtones can be easily calculated.

    Notizen: If and only if spontaneous resonance Raman scattering is excited by irradiation upon a single, discrete and non-degenerate energy level sufficiently distant from other levels can it be interpreted as resonance fiuorescence, i.e. a sequence of two independent one-photon processes, an absorption and an emission in definte order of succession. This decomposition of the resonance scattering process is independent of the bandwidth of the exciting radiation relative to the widths of the combining levels. These widths however determine quantitatively the temporal decay of the resonance scattering (= resonance fluorescence) probability given explicitly in the paper.

L'étude en infrarouge a permis de constater la formation occasionnelle d'une phase cristalline métastable de ce composé. Les résultats en Raman ont également indiqué que la phase cristalline stable (phase I) ne s'obtient généralement pas directement lors de la solidification. Les deux types de spectres démontrent que les phases stables (I et II) possèdent une structure ordonnée, de nature complexe. Les cristaux sont probablement centro-symétriques dans chaque cas, avec un minimum de 8 molécules situées sur des position générales d'une maille élémentaire de symétrie autre que triclinique ou monoclinique. De plus, le cristal II n'est pas cubique.
    Notizen: The presence of three fundamentals in the 545 cm-1 region of the vibrational spectrum of sulfuryl fluoride has been confirmed from the Raman spectrum of the liquid. Evidence for the occasional formation of a metastable crystalline form upon solidification of SO2F2 has been gathered from the infrared study. The Raman investigation has also shown that the most stable crystalline solid (phase I) is seldom directly obtained upon freezing this compound. Both types of spectra indicate that the two stable crystalline phases (I and II) have well-ordered, although rather complex structures. The crystals are probably centrosymmetric in both cases, with at least 8 molecules located on general positions of the unit cell. The crystal system is other than triclinic or monoclinic. Cubic symmetry is further eliminated in the case of phase II.

    Notizen: The gas phase Raman spectra of normal and perdeutero-cyclopropane have been recorded at medium resolution. The band contours of the E′ and E″ degenerate modes have been observed and computer simulation of them has allowed determination of the ζiz values. This analysis was possible for ν9, ν11, ν12, ν13, and ν14 of C3H6 and for ν9, ν10, ν11, ν12, ν13, and ν14 of C3D6. The gas phase spectrum of C3D6 is reported for the first time and assigned. The agreement between our results and the IR data on the E′ modes is good. Predicted parameters for the E″ modes from force field calculations are also in good agreement with the data reported here.

Variations of intensities and depolarization ratios of RR bands of the chlorophylls were followed as a function of the excitation wavelength from 441.6 to 514.5. nm. A number of band assignments are proposed. The effect of the state of association on the RR spectra of chlorophyll was studied for some typical in vitro systems. These data are discussed in view of their relevancy to the study of chlorophyll associations in vivo.

    Notizen: A system for the calibration of the absolute spectral response of spectrometers is described using a standard reflector - of the type used especially for colour measurements - as a secondary light source. In contrast to conventional light sources for calibrations, the radiance is approximately constant over the whole area of the source, and the angular characteristic is known for a large range of reflection angles ϕ. A special advantage is that the angular characteristic follows closely the Lambert-cosine-jaw in the region ϕ∼45°. The radiant flux can be calculated exactly for various experiemental conditions, especially for Raman spectroscopy.

    Notizen: The rotation-vibrational Raman spectrum of the v11 fundamental band of allene has been recorded. The spectrum consists of a series of Q-branches and partly resolved J-structure in the subbands. The Q-branches in one component of the hot band 2v11-v11 have been identified. the following constants have been obtained: v0 = 352.73 ± 0.05 cm-1, A0 = 4.811 ± 0.003 cm-1, ζ11 = 0.816 ± ± 0.001, ΔA = -0.0129 ± 0.0003 cm-1, ΔB = (4.7 ± 0.6) × 10-4 cm-1 and DK = (2.4 ± 0.1) × 10-4 cm-1. An l-type doubling is observed and the l-type doubling constant q11(-) is estimated as -(2.7 ± ± 0.8) × 10-4 cm-1. The analysis of the Raman spectrum shows that the assignment of the Q-branch maxima in the infrared spectrum of v11 [4, 5] has to be changed by two units.

    Notizen: In order to confirm the assignment of the Raman active internal modes of K2SO4 and structurally related crystals, the Raman spectra of oriented cyrstals have been recorded. Using the relative integrated intensities of the bands as data, the transferability of the Raman tensors of the free SO4-- ion to the crystals was investigated with, in general, good agreement between the calculated and measured intensity distribution. A linear dependence between the frequencies of the internal modes of the K2SO4, Rb2SO4 and Cs2SO4 crystals and the electronegativity of the cations could be observed. Also, a brief discussion about the nature of the lattice modes of these crystals is included.

In the gas phase the isotopic shift is zero within experimental error, which indicates planar trigonal geometry for the heavy-atom skeleton. For the liquid and solid phases there are small but real isotopic shifts. The skeleton is therefore slightly distorted in these phases, but it is impossible to say just how.Complete Raman and infrared data are given for 14N(SiH3)3 in several physical states.

    Notizen: The Raman spectrum of hydrogen peroxide in the vapor phase has been measured for the first time by means of an Ar+ laser source. Three parallel bands were found at 3607 (v1), 1393.5 (v2), and 863.5 (v3) cm-1, with relative intensities of about 10:3:12. In deuterium peroxide the corresponding frequencies are 2668.5, 1028.5, and 867.0 cm-1, and the relative intensities, 20:3:12. Thus, the O—O stretching frequency is appreciably lower in the free molecule than in condensed phases (880 cm-1). The shift corresponds to a bond shortening of about 0.01 Å in the latter, in agreement with X-ray and neutron diffraction data for various crystals. The slight shift to higher frequency of the O—O vibration in D2O2 is due primarily to coupling with the OD bending, as indicated by a normal coordinate analysis.

An additional first order vibration, which is ascribed to a local mode of Fe in tetrahedral sulphur surroundings, is found at 340 cm-1 and has A1g-symmetry.

    Notizen: The pure rotational and rotation-vibrational Raman spectra of HCN and DCN have been photographed using a previously described instrument [7]. The molecular constants derived for HCN are in excellent agreement with those obtained from microwave and infrared spectroscopy. Especially, the measurements of the v1 rotation-vibrational Raman band have confirmed the hitherto indirectly obtained values for the molecular constants of the v1 vibrational state of HCN.

    Notizen: The spectral line shape of hyper-Raman light scattering in liquids is calculated by the method of irreducible spherical tensors and the theory of rotational Brownian motion. The line broadening due to rotational molecular motion in the liquid is expressed by way of relaxation times τJM and is found to depend on nonlinear molecular parameters ∣B̃JM∣2, which are quadratic functions of the derivatives with respect to appropriate normal coordinates of the hyperpolarizability tensor elements b2ωijk. Tables of ∣B̃JM∣2 are adduced for all vibration symmetries of spherical-top and symmetric-top molecules. The tensor elements of scattered light intensity are calculated for linearly and circularly polarized incident light. Investigation of hyper-Raman spectral line broadening is seen as a source of new data on the dynamics of molecules in the liquid state and on their nonlinear optical properties.

    Notizen: The Raman specrum of β-adenosine-5′-phosphoric acid has been observed in its aqueous solution with 6471, 5145, 4880, 4579, 4579, and 3511 Å excitation. An examination of the manner of increase of the intensities of the Raman lines at 1580 and 1484 cm-1 of the adenine residue indicated that the electronic excited state corresponding to a weak absorption band at 276 nm is responsible for these Raman scatterings. This idea has been supported by a similar examination of the Raman spectrum of β-adenosine-3′,5′-cyclic phosphoric acid and an examination of the effect of temperature on the Raman spectra of poly rA and poly(rA-rU). A discussion is included of the geometrical structure of the adenine residue in its lowest-singlet electronic excited state, based on the vibrational structure of the fluorescence spectrum, the result of a normal coordinate treatment, and the result of a semiempirical Pariser-Parr-Pople calculation, as well as the Raman data.

The analyses of the bands yield for each molecule v0, B0, B1-B0 and D. From the values of B0 and B0-B1 the internuclear distances re are calculated independently for each species. Within the experimental accuracy the distances are identical as required by the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. The mean value for re is 1.097701 ± ± 0.000004 Å.

    Notizen: Raman spectra of H2S isolated in N2 at M/A ratios of 30, 50, 100, and 300 and in Ar at M/A ratios of 50, 100, 300, and 1000 have been measured in the S-H stretching region. The spectral results confirm the infrared measurements on H2S isolated in N2; however, the symmetric stretching vibration, v1, of the H2S monomer is at about the same frequency, 2619 cm-1, in the spectra of Ar matrices. This disagrees with previous infrared measurements of Ar matrices. Raman bands in the spectra of both N2 and Ar matrices due to a dimer of H2S are consistent with those observed in the infrared spectrum of N2 matrices, and they support a donor-acceptor model for the dimer.

    Notizen: The low temperature (15K) Raman spectrum of Mn(CO)5Br has been recorded under high resolution conditions in the 2150-1900 cm-1 and low frequency (below 700 cm-1) regions using Kr+ laser excitation (647.1 nm). The spectrum indicates that there is no phase change between room temperature and 15K. Several Raman-active CO stretching bands of the principal mono-isotopic species Mn (12CO)4(13CO)Br present in natural abundance (1% axially substituted and 4% equatorially substituted) have been observed for the first time and assigned on the basis of a CO-factored force field calculation. The reasons why it is felt that bands due to dilute isotopic species such as 13CO are not observed routinely in the Raman, in contrast to the infrared, are discussed.

    Notizen: The Raman spectrum of gaseous N2F4 at a pressure of 760 torr was recorded with a spectral slit width of 3 cm-1. Ten of the expected eleven fundamentals of the symmetric motions of both the gauche and trans isomers give rise to strongly polarized Raman lines. These new data require a reassignment of some of the fundamentals for both the C2 and C2h conformers. The Raman of the solid at 18K was also recorded. Both conformers were found in the solid even after annealing the sample for 9 hours at a temperature of 101.6K and 3 hours at a temperature of 106.8K. Bands attributable to the gauche isomer became more intense relative to those for the trans isomer after several hours of annealing.

    Notizen: The fundamental vibrational band of oxygen has been examined with a resolution of 0.05 cm-1 for the Q branch and 0.40 cm-1 for the S and O branches. All lines of the Q branch were clearly resolved except Q(1) and Q(3). Calculated molecular parameters agree with those previously reported from microwave and electronic spectra. Line width measurements made in the Q branch and on three S branch lines, using a resolution of 0.05 cm-1, are in fair agreement with previously measured and calculated line widths for pure rotational Raman lines.

    Notizen: The behaviour of an element of the Raman scattering tensor is considered as the exciting frequency is tuned through the vibronic absorption spectrum of the scattering molecule. Certain observed features of Raman excitation profiles are explained, and some predictions made. Using some simplifying assumptions, we examine the limiting form of the scattering tensor in certain resonance situations. On the basis of symmetry considerations, we then outline expected variations in (and limits on) the depolarization ratio near resonance.
