Attempted Rearrangement of Allylcarbinyl Anions to Cyclobutyl AnionsThe synthesis of 4-bromo-2-phenyl-1-butene-4,4-d2 (22) is reported. The corresponding allylcarbinyl Grignard reagent 11a in diethyl ether or tetrahydrofuran is remarkably stable at room temperature. On heating (100°), 11a rearranges to 11b but not to 11c, definitely ruling out the presence of any cyclobutyl species in the equilibrium. Furthermore, an irreversible rearrangement to the cyclobutyl Grignard reagent 13 was not observed, even at temperatures up to 175°.
Notes:
