Description: This disclosure comprises a plurality of individual pressurized cells which are caused to leak in response to a micrometeoroid penetration, the leak being sensed by appropriate instrumentation. The plurality of cells may be rolled into a compact arrangement such that the volume of the micrometeoroid detector is small and therefore readily packed in a payload of a launch vehicle. Once the payload is placed in orbit, the rolled up cells can be released, pressurized and provide a relatively rigid, large surface area for detecting micrometeoroid penetration.

Description: A method and associated apparatus for confining the undesirable by-products and limiting noise of explosive welding are discussed. The apparatus consists fo a simple enclosure into which the explosive is placed and within which the explosion occurs. The shape of the enclosure, the placement of the explosive, and the manner in which the enclosure is placed upon the material to be welded determine the force of the explosion transmitted to the proposed bond area. The explosion is totally confined within the enclosure thus reducing the noise level and preventing debris from being strewn about to contaminate the weld area or create personnel hazards.

Description: A digital controller for controlling the operation of a folding machine enables automatic folding of a desired number of sheets responsive to entry of that number into a selector. The controller includes three decade counter stages for corresponding rows of units, tens and hundreds push buttons. Each stage including a decimal-to-BCD encoder, a buffer register, and a digital or binary counter. The BCD representation of the selected count for each digit is loaded into the respective decade down counters. Pulses generated by a sensor and associated circuitry are used to decrease the count in the decade counters. When the content of the decade counter reaches either 0 or 1, a solenoid control valve is actuated which interrupts operation of the machine. A repeat switch, when actuated, prevents clearing of the buffer registers so that multiple groups of the same number of sheets can be folded without reentering the number into the selector.

Description: A train of ultrasonic pulses is beamed into the body of an animal. Organs intercepted by the beam reflect echo pulses following each transmitted pulse. An electronic gate with a variable width and a variable time delay relative to the transmitted pulse is utilized for selecting echoes derived from other organs or portions of organs. The integral of the echo signals received within the first half of the gate period is subtracted from a corresponding integral of the echo signal received during the second half of the gate to derive an error signal for controlling the time delay of the gate. In this manner, the selected echo signal is always maintained in the center of the gate.

Description: A combined filtration-reverse-osmosis water recovery system has been evaluated to determine its capability to reclaim domestic wash water for reuse as a commode water supply. The system produced water that met all chemical and physical requirements established by the U.S. Public Health Service for drinking water with the exception of carbon chloroform extractables, methylene blue active substances, and phenols. It is thought that this water is of sufficient quality to be reused as commode supply water. The feasibility of using a combined filtration and reverse-osmosis technique for reclaiming domestic wash water has been established. The use of such a technique for wash-water recovery will require a maintenance filter to remove solid materials including those less than 1 micron in size from the wash water. The reverse-osmosis module, if sufficiently protected from plugging, is an attractive low-energy technique for removing contaminants from domestic wash water.

Description: Common to all nondestructive type testing of hardware that provides the necessary confidence in the design is the question regarding the proper magnitude of the test level. The objective of this investigation was to study the possibility of establishing cost optimized test levels of a rather general nature. This investigation was based on studying the influence of test level on a cost of error cost model that reflects the adverse effects of 'undertesting' and 'overtesting'. For the assumed conditions of normal distribution for the random variables and a protoflight spacecraft case, the results indicated that the limits for an optimum test factor can range between slightly less than 1.0 to slightly more than 1.5.

Description: A computational approach to determining the limiting performance of vehicles subject to transient disturbances based on response variable criteria is set forth. For the purposes of a limiting performance study, the transportation system dynamics are described using second- or first-order equations in which the sought for quantity is a vector of time-varying functions called control or isolator forces that have replaced portions of the physical system. Computations are performed as a linear programming problem. As an example of the limiting performance of vehicles in protecting passengers or cargo under crash conditions, the problem of lading damage of a rail vehicle that is struck by another vehicle is considered.

Description: An analysis has been made to evaluate the impact on fuel requirements of a segregated short-haul system. A comparison has been made between two alternate scenarios: one with STOL, and the other without STOL. For the New York to Washington, D.C. city pair the results show: (1) the modal efficiency approach, while indicating the with STOL scenario requires more fuel than the without STOL scenario, is of questionable validity because it does not account for various effects which exist in realistic scenarios; (2) evaluation of fuel requirements based on more detailed modeling indicates that while a STOL scenario requires more fuel than without STOL when an idealized CTOL system is postulated, the STOL scenario requires less fuel than without STOL when the CTOL system has even moderate delays. These results are due to a combination of effects: the closer and more convenient locations of STOL ports to the traveler, congestion at the CTOL airports, and the impact of the through passenger traffic. Sensitivity of results to STOL aircraft block fuel and to CTOL congestion delays are considered.

Description: Surface discontinuities of defects such as cracks and orifices are detected by applying a penetrating fluid, preferably a liquid, to a test surface so as to cause the liquid to penetrate any minute cracks or opening in the surface, removing the excess liquid from the surface, and leaving a residual in the discontinuities, cavities, or in the subsurface materials. A sheet of porous material impregnated with a sensitizing medium which will react with vapors of the residual liquid to form a visible pattern is applied to the test surface. The residual liquid trapped in the discontinuities, cavities, or subsurface material is vaporized, and, as the vapors contact the sensitizing medium on the sheet, a pattern corresponding to the discontinuity is formed on the sheet material and the penetrant completely removed from the sample.

Description: Management of the Saturn launch vehicles was an evolutionary process, requiring constant interaction between NASA Headquarters, the Marshall Space Flight Center (particularly the Saturn 5 Program Office), and the various prime contractors. Successful Saturn management was a blend of the decades of experience of the von Braun team, management concepts from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Government, and private industry. The Saturn 5 Program Office shared a unique relationship with the Apollo Program Office at NASA Headquarters. Much of the success of the Saturn 5 Program Office was based on its painstaking attention to detail, emphasis on individual responsibilities (backed up by comprehensive program element plans and management matrices), and a high degree of visibility as embodied in the Program Control Center.

Description: An arterial pulse wave pressure transducer is introduced. The transducer is comprised of a fluid filled cavity having a flexible membrane disposed over the cavity and adapted to be placed on the skin over an artery. An arterial pulse wave creates pressure pulses in the fluid which are transduced, by a pressure sensitive transistor in direct contact with the fluid, into an electric signal. The electrical signal is representative of the pulse waves and can be recorded so as to monitor changes in the elasticity of the arterial walls.

These rim segments carry, between the spokes, rim elements which are rigid relative to their outer support surfaces, and defined in their outer contour to form a part of the circle forming the wheel diameter. The rim segments have provided for each of the rim elements an independent drive means selectively operable when the element is in ground contact to rotatably drive the rim element in a direction of movement perpendicularly lateral to the normal plane of rotation and movement of the wheel. This affords the wheel omnidirectional movement.

Description: A system is described for measuring velocities of radiating particles based on Doppler shift. Light from the particles is directed through a narrow band optical filter to a Fabry-Perot interferometer initially tuned to a selected center line corresponding to zero particle Doppler shift. The movable mirror of the interferometer is made to sweep about the center line by the output of a modulation oscillator. The fringe pattern output is imaged onto a pin hole through which light is directed to a photomultiplier. The output of the photomultiplier is supplied to a phase sensitive detector with the oscillator output as a reference signal and which operates in the quadrature mode. The detector's output is gain controlled and is combined with the oscillator's output to adjust the interferometer's movable mirror to acquire the line center.

Description / Table of Contents: Photoelectron Spectra and Molecular Properties, XXVI. The Delocalisation of Sulfur Electron Pairs in Sulfides and DisulfidesThe photoelectron (PE) spectra of sulfides R—S—R (R=H, CH3, C2H5, n- und i-C3H7, n- and tert-C4H9) and disulfides R—S—S—R (R=H, CH3, C2H5, n- and i-C3H7, tert-C4H9, —[CH2]4—) are comparatively discussed. For sulfides the first ionization energy, which decreases as expected with increasing degree of alkylation, can also be obtained from the charge transfer excitation energies of their σ-complexes with tetracyanoethylene (TCNE). Disulfides show a splitting of the first PE-band in a clear dependence on the dihedral angle of the sulfur electron pairs. All observations can be rationalised within MO models as interactions of the sulfur electron pairs with the σ-skeleton and/or with each other.

Description / Table of Contents: Nickelalkyl Ylid ComplexesFrom reactions of [(CH3)3P]3 Ni(CH3)2 and [(CH3)3P]2Ni(CH3)Cl with the ylid (CH3)3PCH2, molecular (1) an ionic complexes (2) are obtained, containing three covalent Ni—C-σ-bonds of square planar nickel atoms. These bonds are strongly stabilized by the proximity of the ylid onium center. Excess ylid converts 2 into a binuclear complex 3, where the metal atoms are bridged by dimethylphosphonium-bismethylid units, with formation of [(CH3)4P]Cl as a byproduct. An isoelectronic dimethylphosphinate complex, 4, containing a similar eight-membered ring structure, has also been prepared.

Description / Table of Contents: Crystal and Molecular Structure of Hexakis(phenylthio)ethaneThe structure of hexakis(phenylthio)ethane has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The phase determination was carried out by means of the Symbolic Addition Method. The structure has been refined with 1780 observed reflections to an R-value of 10.9%. The pseudo bodycentered unit cell contains two molecules, which are situated at the center at 0, 0, 0 and 1/2, 1/2, 1/2, respectively. The bodycentering is almost perfect for the six sulfur atoms, but does not involve the central ethane bonding, which implies that the sulfur atoms, that are connected by the centering, are bonded to different carbon atoms. The six sulfur atoms are staggered around the ethane C—C bond. The S—C—S angles of 113° are larger than the ideal tetrahedrane angles by the same amount by which the S—C—C angles of 105° are smaller. The ethane C—C distances are 1.59 and 1.56 Å respectively.

Description / Table of Contents: Lithio-1,3,5-trithianes Generation in Solution, Reactions with Electrophiles, and Use in Nucleophilic Acylation1,3,5-Trithiane and 2-mono- as well as 2,4,6-trisubstituted trithianes are shown to be metallated by n-butyllithium in THF. Reaction of the lithio derivatives thus obtained with electrophiles leads to more highly substituted trithianes which in some cases can be isolated in a pure form. The n.m.r. spectra of the products at room temperature are described. Mercury(II)-assisted solvolysis of alkyltrithianes „liberates“ the most highly substituted carbon with formation of carbonyl compounds or their O-acetals. This completes a sequence of reactions which suggests use of lithiotrithianes as reagents for nucleophilic acylation. Advantages and disadvantages of this procedure compared to the dithiane method are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: On the Dependence of the Bond-length in some N,O-Dibenzoylhydroxylamines on the Torsion of the Carboxylic and Hydroxamic Groups against the Benzene Nuclei. The Crystal Structures of N,O-Dibenzoyl-(C14H11NO3), N,O-Bis(2-chlorobenzoyl)-(C14H9Cl2NO3), N-BenzoylO-p-toluoyl- (C15H13NO3), and N-Benzoyl-O-o-toluoylhydroxylamines (C15H13NO3)The crystal structures of four N,O- dibenzoylhydroxylamines - 1: N,O-dibenzoylhydroxylamine (C14H11NO3), 2: N,O- bis(2-chlorobenzoyl)hydroxylamine (C14H9Cl2NO3), 3: N-Benzoyl-O-p toluoylhydroxylamine (C15H13NO3), 4: N-benzoyl-O-o- toluoylhydroxylamine (C15H13NO3) - have been determined by X-ray techniques, using direct methods for phase determination. The torsion angles ϕ of the C—C- bonds between the phenyl groups and the hydroxamic acid groups or the carboxylic groups, respectively, have been calculated. The values of the intramolecular distances of these bonds, plotted versus cos2 ϕ, can be approximated by a straight line. Extrapolating to ϕ = 90°, the pure sp2-sp2-C—C-single-bond is found to be 1.513 Å.
