    Notes: Summary The instrumentation suitable for the acquisition of biomagnetic signals is reviewed. The basic magnetometer components,i.e. SQUIDs, flux transformers and dewars, are studied separately. Possible improvements to the present instrumentation as well as complete set-ups including ferromagnetic or eddy current shields are discussed and their efficiency evaluated.

    Notes: Abstract The spectral distribution of the thermoluminescence (TL) of YAG:Nd crystals coloured by x-ray irradiation at room temperature (RT) and at 80 K has been investigated. The spectral distribution of TL in the uv-, visible and near ir ranges shows that the energy transfer by bound exciton states (BES) to the RE3+ ions (Nd3+ and Tb3+) decreases with increasing temperature. The TL spectrum in the uv range is ascribed to the hole defect centers. Diminution of the energy transferred by the BES to the Nd3+ and Tb3+ ions is the direct cause for the occurrence of the group of lines ascribed to the Nd3+ ions in TL observed at LT, whereas at RT and higher only the groups of Tb lines are observed.

    Notes: Abstract A 3-parameter dye laser degradation equation is introduced that has been based upon a theoretical analysis of a laser oscillator. The new equation and the 4-parameter empirical laser degradation equation used previously in this series are further developed to allow calculation of the lifetime of a dye solution for any fraction of laser output degradation. These lifetime equations are shown to be dependent upon the input energy per pulse and the threshold of lasing. The new 3-parameter equation allows the degradation constants to be determined with less change in laser output than did the original 4-parameter empirical expression.

    Notes: Abstract Ge samples implanted with 40 keV Pb at a fluence of 3×1015/cm2 were irradiated with ruby laser single pulses of 15ns duration. Reordering of the damaged layer occurs for energy density irradiation above 0.6 J/cm2. The Pb atoms redistribute with a large component at the sample surface which is easily etched off. The remaining part of Pb impurities is substitutionally located, and the concentration exceeds the solid solubility limit by three order of magnitude. The formation of the metastable solution is explained in terms of a transient liquid layer produced during laser irradiation.

    Notes: Abstract A significant contribution to the degradation of GaAs-based lasers and light-emitting diodes arises from the formation of so-called dark line defects. It is shown that these defects are accumulations of non-radiative recombination centres around dislocations. The centres are identified as As vacancies, which are emitted by climbing dislocations, concomitantly with the absorption of Ga interstitials. From scanning deep-level transient spectroscopy observations it is concluded that the so-called DX centres are Ga interstitials. The driving force for dislocation climb and thus for dark-line-defect formation is a supersaturation of Ga interstitials originating from the growth of the GaAs crystals under Ga-rich conditions as a consequence of the high volatility of As. Phenomena in other III–V compound semiconductors related to the formation of dark line defects in GaAs are also discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The paper deals with the effect ofγ-radiation from a Co60 source on the electronic properties of amorphous silicon field effect transistors. These thin film devices, deposited by the glow discharge technique, are being developed for addressable liquid crystal displays, logic circuits and other applications. 1 Mrad (Si) and 5 Mrad (Si) doses were used and the transistors were held at gate voltages between −8V and +8V during irradiation. Measurements on irradiated specimens showed shifts in threshold voltage of less than 3 V and a change in transconductance below 10%, both of which could be removed by annealing above 130 °C. These results are compared with presently available “radiation hardened” crystalline silicon device structures and it is concluded that in spite of the thicker gate insulation layer (0.3 μm of silicon nitride) of the amorphous devices, the latter are remarkably radiation tolerant, with little degradation in performance. Measurements on irradiatedα-Si films deposited on glass show pronounced conductivity changes, not observed in the transistors. It is suggested that these effects arise at the Si/glass interface, and are prevented by the presence of the silicon nitride film in the devices.

    Notes: Abstract A Monte-Carlo simulation technique based on the screened Rutherford differential cross section for the elastic scattering and Gryzinski's semiempirical expression for the inelastic core and valence electron excitation is used to describe electrons and positrons slowing down in solids. The theoretical results are compared with the experimental backscattering, absorption and transmission results for aluminum, silicon, copper, and gold thin film and semi-infinite targets and good agreement is observed. The simulated stopping profiles are fitted with a simple analytic expression. The profiles are Laplace-transformed to give a useful data base for analyzing phenomena associated with slow positron re-emission from solids.

    Notes: Abstract An analytical treatment of the thermal phenomena during free-running ruby laser annealing of boron implanted silicon is presented. The heat equation was solved for a simplified shape of the pulse train consisting of a uniform succession of triangular spikes, identical in energy. During one spike the optical and thermal parameters of the sample were taken constant, but for each new spike, new values of these parameters were calculated taking into account their temperature dependence. Such a model predicts the melting of the top surface before the laser pulse has ended, for energy densities higher than 9×104 J/m2. RHEED confirms the presence of recristallization at about the same value of the laser-pulse energy densities.

    Notes: Abstract The ion-beam mixing of Fe-Al evaporated multiple-layer films has been investigated by measuring continuously the electrical resistivity of the samples during the bombardment. The experimental curves exhibit a tendency toward a saturation process and allow the determination of the critical dose corresponding to the total mixing of the multiple-layer film. The variations of the volume fraction of intermixed atoms as a function of the ion dose have been deduced and a semi-empirical model is proposed to explain the observed kinetics.

    Notes: Abstract Positron lifetime measurements have been performed for molybdenum samples containing different densities of voids and dislocation loops. The samples consisted of single crystal molybdenum exposed to 2.7×1018 fast neutrons/cm2 at 60°C, and subsequently annealed at 650°, 725°, 800°, and 875°C in vacuum (p〈10−7 Torr). After each annealing, where the densities of voids and loops were changed, positron lifetime measurements were performed in the temperature interval [−194°, 285°C]. In two-term fits of the measured spectra the longer lifetime, τe2-460 ps corresponds to an intensityI e2 increasing with sample temperature. The shorter lifetime τe1 decreases with increasing temperature. A three-state trapping model with and without detrapping is discussed, and appears to be incapable of explaining the observed temperature dependences. A four-state positron trapping model including detrapping is necessary and satisfactory. It describes positron trapping to voids and trapping to dislocation loops, which is followed by a competition between detrapping and positron transition to jogs or other dislocation-bound defects. Mathematical expressions of the four-state trapping model including detrapping are worked out and calculations of the intensityI e2 are compared with the experimental values ofI e2. By use of special models for the temperature dependence of trapping rates, numerical values can be determined for the positron-dislocation-binding energy and for specific positron trapping rates.

    Notes: Abstract The positron annihilation technique (P.A.T.) has been used in a study of interactions between gas impurities and crystal defects (vacancy loops and voids) in molybdenum. P.A.T. measurements were found to be very effective for this purpose. We propose that the observed effects are due to decoration of the void surface with nitrogen and vacancy loop decoration with hydrogen and nitrogen.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of implantation-induced radiation damage on the thermal oxidation of cobalt have been studied. Bombardment by both Co+ self-ions and by Xe+ has been studied as a function of ion dose, energy and annealing temperature. A major increase in oxidation was observed for doses of 〉1016 Co+ cm−2 in agreement with previous studies on Al. The oxidation behaviour as a function of annealing temperature was markedly different for Co+ and Xe+ bombarded samples. For Co+ bombarded samples, damage anneals rapidly in the temperature range 20–300°C due to thermally assisted repair of point defects and vacancy clusters. However, for Xe+ bombardment, it is proposed that the higher annealing temperatures required for damage repair arise due to the stabilisation of three-dimensional vacancy clusters by the oversized Xe atoms. The increase in oxidation after annealing in the temperature range 300–500°C is thought to be due to vacancy release mechanisms which may affect oxide nucleation.

    Notes: Abstract The implantation of nitrogen into silicon to produce Si3N4 layers was investigated to find an alternative to CVD-Si3N4 layers used in ISOPLANAR-and LOCOS-technology. The technological properties of the implanted Si3N4 layers in respect to oxidation inhibition and etching are comparable or superior to CVD-Si3N4 layers. The implanted layers are more resistent against oxidation for nitrogen doses of 2.4×1017 cm−2 at 30keV. The etching behavior is comparable for both types of Si3N4-layers. In the implanted layers no pinholes are found and threre is no formation of a bird's beak, as is well known in the case of CVD-nitride.

    Notes: Abstract The sensitivity of positrons to point defects created by the irradiation of V3Si with neutrons is demonstrated. We found no indication of thermal vacancies by thermal equilibrium measurement up to 1273 K which indicates that the monovacancy formation enthalpy for V3Si isH 1V F ≧(1.84±0.14) eV. Investigations within the range of homogeneity for excess vanadium suppot the idea that substitutional defects are the dominating defect type, whereas for excess silicon a direct confirmation of existing structural vacancies as the dominating defect type is given.

    Notes: Abstract High power density electron beams offer new opportunities for studies of epitaxial growth of semiconductor materials. Assuming that the mechanism of epitaxial growth can be understood as a surface melting followed by supercooling regrowth, the heat flow equation has been applied to calculate the temperature reached after an electron beam pulse of power density between 0.5–2 J/cm2. Comparison with laser annealing is made.

    Notes: Abstract Estimates are given for the distribution of the depth of origin of sputtered atoms in the low-fluence limit, as well as the corresponding distribution of atoms sputtered into a given energy interval. The former distribution is well described by an exponential profile, with the characteristic depth being consistent with previous results. The latter distribution is characterized by an energy-dependent depth scale and a shape that varies from exponential at low sputtered-atom energies to inverse-power form at higher energies.

    Notes: Abstract Energy loss profiles for secondary electrons and γ-rays are discussed and the interactions of γ-rays with the activated species within the core of a nuclear track investigated. Based on an electron-hole trapping mechanism experimental values for the activation energies of annealing for nuclear tracks in the range of 0.26 to 0.5 eV have been obtained. These compare favourably with theoretical expectations. The consequences of variations in the detection sensitivities of such detectors are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract By annealing Si layers amorphised by ion-implantation with a cw CO2 laser beam in oxygen rich environments, it has been possible to incorporate O atoms into the recrystallized lattice. Absorption measurements on such regrown layers by infrared spectrometry have shown that the impurities are preferentially bonded into substitutional lattice sites, rather than existing interstitially. Supplementary RHEED studies have indicated thatβ-cristobalite, a crystalline form of SiO2, has been formed. These investigations highlight the importance of the ambient during cw laser annealing.

    Notes: Abstract Energy distributions of H+ and H− backscattered from graphite, stainless steel and molybdenum were measured for low incident beam energies (150∼1500 eV). The energy distributions of H− resembled that of H+, while the intensity ratio of H− to H+ varied from material to material and with the incident proton energy. A peak in the energy distribution moved to the “cutoff” energy with decreasing incident energy, which can be attributed to an increase in nuclear stopping cross section and a decrease in electronic stopping cross section. The ratio of the peak energy to the incident energy is related to the reduced energy ɛ of incident beam independent of target materials in the measured region (0.03〈ɛ〈 3.3).

    Notes: Abstract The temperature dependence of the sputtering yield was measured for lOOkeV per atom bombardment of silver with molecular and atomic antimony ions. No exponential increase of the yield was found in the temperature range from 25° to 775 °C, although a pronounced nonlinear effect is observed when the yield of these projectiles is compared,Y(Sb 2 + )≈ 1.5×[2Y(Sb+)]. We conclude that there is no influence of the lattice temperature on collision spikes.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper we want to show by means of Reflection High Energy Electron Diffraction (RHEED) techniques that the recrystallization processes taking place on amorphous germanium films irradiated with low-power superimposed ruby laser pulses occur gradually. Furthermore, in implanted α-Ge films the amorphous-crystalline front moves from the surface of the specimen towards the substrate, while the opposite occurs for glow-discharge deposited films. Moreover, electron microscope observations carried out with a double-stage carbon replica technique at different depths in the specimen show that defect migration is one of the competitive mechanisms in low-power laser annealing.

    Notes: Abstract Positron lifetime measurements were performed on amorphous Pd80Si20 and Cu50Ti50 alloys irradiated with 3MeV electrons at 20K. The irradiation was found to increase the mean positron lifetime in both specimens indicating the presence of vacancy-like radiation damage. Isochronal annealing between 77 K and 300 K resulted in a continuous reduction of the positron lifetime, which suggests a gradual recovery of the irradiation induced defects.

    Notes: Abstract Positron annihilation and Hall effect inn-InP crystals as a function of electron irradiation up to 1 · 1019 cm−2 and post-irradiated isochronal annealing up to 550 °C have been studied. It is concluded that in irradiatedn-InP samples positrons interact with negatively charged acceptor-type defect with level atE c −0.33 eV, probablyV In (primary defect). In post-irradiated isochronal annealed (up to 330 °C) samples ofn-InP positron trapping occurs preferably in secondary defects-vacancy clusters, which are formed in the temperature range (150–300 °C). Inn-InP crystals containing radiation induced defects the trapping rate was found to decrease with temperature in the range (300–77) K.

    Notes: Abstract The topograms revealing the anisotropic distribution of defects in the volume of monocrystalline YAG samples have been obtained by the thermoluminescence (TL) technique. It has also been shown that the anisotropic distribution of the lattice defects affects strongly the shape of the TL curves. The greatest changes in the TL intensity were observed in the areas of the samples distributed symmetrically every 120°. It was noted that the selective distribution of the TL intensity is caused mainly by the presence of the (211) facets as well as growth striations formed during the growth process. The groups of lines observed in the TL spectrum have been ascribed to the Tb3+ ions, excited owing to the radiationless energy transfer from the bound exciton states (BES).

    Notes: Abstract The darkening of soda-lime glass envelopes of low-pressure mercury discharge tubes has nothing to do with the formation of sodium amalgam on the inner surface of the tube. It is, however, connected with the diffusion of mercury ions into the glass of the tube. By applying a high negative voltage to part of the outer surface of a burning tube a sodium depleted region is created at the corresponding part of the inner surface. After removal of the high-voltage electrode and continued normal operation the rate of darkening of the sodium-depleted part of the tube is about 50 times larger than the rate observed for the normal parts of the same tube.

    Notes: Abstract Oxygen profiles in silicon implanted with energies between 2 and 20 MeV by means of a Tandem accelerator have been investigated with a microprobe after bevelling the sample surface. It is shown that the measured profiles correspond to the implantation profiles when the microprobe is operated with a well focussed 2 keV electron beam. The projected ion ranges and the profiles thus obtained are compared with theoretical profiles which have been calculated by a Monte Carlo simulation of the stopping procedure. Takingk=1.30k LSS for the electronic stopping coefficient in the LSS region up to 2.55 MeV and a constant value of 162 eV/Å for the electronic stopping at higher energies the calculation yields satisfactory range estimates, whereas the range straggling is systematically too small up to 13% in comparison with the experimental results.

    Notes: Abstract In (100)p-Si radiation damage was produced by implanting B+ ions with an energy of 80keV, 90keV and 1.6MeV. The specimens were annealed by scanned electronbeam irradiation (20keV, 1–2mAcm−2). The formation, evolution and annihilation of defects during the irradiation process were investigated by employing DLTS and RBS measuring techniques. The results show a minimum of defect concentration and an efficiency of the electrical activation of B higher than 80% at an annealing time of 4.5 s. For irradiation times longer than 5 s it becomes evident, that the crystal surface acts as source of defects and contributes to an increase in defect concentration.

    Notes: Summary In this paper we deal with an optimization problem of the second-order superconducting gradiometric sensor systems that have been designed for measurement of the weak inhomogeneous magnetic fields in a magnetically disturbed environment. The conditions of maximum signalto-noise ratio of the output of superconducting quantum magnetometers (SQM) are considered. The influence of measured signal source parameters, of an outside disturbing source and of the own noise of the magnetometer on the gradiometer base length selection is analysed.

Si è trovato che la componente antero-posterioreX vettore magnetico del cuore è la piú facile da scoprire. Si suggeriscono conduttori ideali per le altre due componenti. Comunque questi hanno una sensibilità inferiore. Le differenze rispetto ai risultati di precedenti ricercatori sono state spiegate con le differenze tra i modelli.
    Notes: Summary The ideality and sensitivity of several vector magnetocardiographic leads were tested by using an inhomogeneous, physical torso model. The postero-anterior component of the heart’s magnetic vector was found easiest to detect. New, more ideal leads for the other two components are suggested. However, these have lower sensitivity. The differences from the results of former investigators can be explained by the differences of the models.

    Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Si è studiato lo spettro del rumore di un gradiometro superconduttore a derivata secon da in un agglomerato urbano. I dati sono stati ottenuti dal gradiometro con tre accelerometri ortogonali e un magnetometro a flussometro elettronico triassiale attaccato al dewar. Questi dati sono stati analizzati usando tecniche di elaborazione dei segnali, soprattutto un cancellatore adattativo di rumori, per ridurre i rumori nei dati del gradiometro. I risultati mostrano qui che il rumore dell’esterno e/o il rumore del movimento del dewar possono essere ridotti di 40 dB in potenza di rumore. Si è anche mostrato che, nel caso di basso rapporto segnale-rumore (S/N∼1), può essere estratta un’onda sunusoidale di 10 Hz. Questa tecnica non solo promette riduzione dei rumori, ma ha anche lo scopo d’identificare i segnali di rumore che potrebbero essere veramente considerati parte del responso evocato. L’analisi dei dati che contengono i responsi evocati è ora in corso.
    Notes: Summary The noise spectrum of a superconducting second-derivative gradiometer has been investigated in an urban environment. Data have been acquired from the gradiometer with three orthogonal accelerometers and a triaxial fluxgate magnetometer attached to the dewar. These data have been analyzed by using signal processing techniques, primarily an adaptive noise canceller, to reduce noise in the gradiometer data. Results shown here indicate that the environmental noise and/or the dewar motion noise can be reduced as much as 40 dB in noise power. It is also shown, in the case of poor signal-to-noise ratio (S/N∼1), that a 10 Hz sine wave can be extracted. This technique not only shows promise for noise reduction, but also aids in the identification of noise signals which might be misconstrued as part of the evoked response. Analysis of data containing evoked response is now underway.

The equipment is provided with a battery power supply, and, when filled with 60 cm3 of liquid helium, will operate continuously for 6 h. The device is suitable for magnetocardiography.

Una velocità di decadimento piú rapida appare correlata con un piú rapido smaltimento delle particelle di fumo di saldatura nei fumatori.

A faster decay rate was found to correlate with a faster clearance of welding fume particles in smokers

    Notes: Summary Ferrimagnetic particles instilled intratracheally into the lungs are phagocytized by alveolar macrophages. After these particles are magnetized by an external field, they produce a remanent field which decays rapidly due to particle misalignment from cytoplasmic motion (relaxation). Changes in relaxation rate with time following instillation might be related to cytoplasmic motility.

    Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto La pletismografia a suscettività magnetica (MSPG) è un nuovo metodo proposto per controllare i cambiamenti del volume cardiaco. Si riesaminano il principio di misurazione e i lavori recenti di altri ricercatori. Si studia l’effetto del movimento legato al cuore della cassa toracica anteriore sul segnale MSPG.I risultati suggeriscono che il movimento del confine cassa toracica-aria può contribuire in modo significativo (∼75%) al segnale MSPG quando è registrato vicino al cuore.
    Notes: Summary Magnetic-susceptibility plethysmography (MSPG) is a new method proposed for monitoring cardiac-volume changes. The measurement principle and recent work by other investigators are reviewed. The effect of the cardiac-related motion of the anterior chest wall on the MSPG signal is studied. The results suggest that the motion of the chest-wall-air boundary may contribute significantly (∼75%) to the MSPG signal when recorded near the heart.

All'interno dell'intervalloPR è stata osservata una struttura a rampa, la cui pendenza cambia segno attraversando la linea mediana del cuore. In aggiunta, sono stati registrati segnali ben definiti approssimativemente 40 ms prima dell'inizio dell'attivazione ventricolare.
    Abstract: Резюме йзмеряется активность НР системы у человека с помощью SQUID магнетометра в Берлинской магнитно экранированной комнате, используя фильтртрацию полосы пропускания (ширина полосы от 0.5 Гц до 300 Гц) и усреднение. Берлинская магнитно экранированная комната уменьшает уровень фонового шума до величины $$4{{fT} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{fT} {\sqrt {Hz} }}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {\sqrt {Hz} }}$$ в области белого шума. ВнутриPR интервла наблюдается диаграмма с уклоном, причем величина ыклона меняется при пересечении медианной линии сердца. Кроме того, ориблизительно за 40 мс до наступления активности желудочка регистрируются определенные сигналы.
    Notes: Summary The activity of the His-Purkinje system (HPS) in man has been measured magnetically with a SQUID magnetometer in the Berlin magnetically shielded room (BMSR) by using in addition band pass filtering (band width 0.5 Hz to 300 Hz) and averaging. The BMSR reduces the background noise level to less than $$4{{fT} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{fT} {\sqrt {Hz} }}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {\sqrt {Hz} }}$$ in the region of white noise. Within thePR interval a ramp pattern was observed, changing its slope when crossing the median line of the heart. In addition, definite signals were recorded approximately 40 ms before the onset of ventricular activation.

    Notes: Summary Sloping signals were observed in thePR segment of normal magnetocardiograms recorded from five dogs. Larger ramps were observed after first-degree AV nodal blockade was induced pharmacologically, and complete atrial repolarization was observed following isolated atrial contractions in two animals with second-degree block. These ramps, ranging up to 6.7 pT in size and arising from the atria, may complicate magnetic detection of His-Purkinje activity.

    Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto La motivazione fondamentale per lo studio dei fenomeni elettrofisiologici cardiaci tramite il metodo biomagnetico è dovuta al fatto che questa tecnica offre un’alta risoluzione spaziale e sembra fornire informazioni complementari rispetto alle sole registrazioni elettriche. Fino ad oggi l’interesse degli studiosi si è concentrato su due differenti fenomeni cardiaci: 1) lo studio dell’attività del sistema di conduzione atrioventricolare e 2) lo studio della depolarizzazione ventricolare anormalmente ritardata (late potentials). L’interesse clinico per lo studio non invasivo del sistema di His-Purkinje (HPS) è ben noto. Registrazioni cliniche non invasive di late potentials sono particolarmente desiderabili in quanto possono essere preziosi indicatori di rischio di morte improvvisa. In questo lavoro si presenta una rassegna sullo stato delle ricerche in entrambi i campi d’indagine.
    Notes: Summary The fundamental motivation for investigating cardiac electrophysiological phenomena by means of the biomagnetic method has been that this technique should have added spatial resolution and provided complementary information as opposed to electric recordings only. So far the interest of experimentalists has been concentrated on two different kinds of cardiac phenomena: 1) the study of the activity of the cardiac conduction system and 2) of abnormally delayed ventricular depolarization (late potentials). The clinical interest for the noninvasive investigation of the His-Purkinje system (HPS) is well known. Noninvasive clinical recording of late potentials is particularly desirable as they seem to be precious markers for risk of sudden death. A review of the state of research in both fields is presented in this paper.

Allo scopo di risolvere il problema di quanta parte dei segnali misurati sia attribuibile al sistema di His-Purkinje e quanta piuttosto alla ripolarizzazione atriale, è stata recentemente sviluppata una strumentazione appositamente disegnata per misure sul HPS e con una sensibilità di $$20fT/\sqrt {Hz}$$ nella banda di frequenze interessanti ((0.5÷300) Hz). Al contempo si è altresí sviluppato un nuovo modello teorico in stretta corrispondenza con le caratteristiche anatomiche del HPS che fornisce una distribuzione di campo magnetico sul torace in buon accordo qualitativo con i risultati sperimentali.
    Notes: Summary Since 1980, systematic investigations of the activity of the His-Purkinje system (HPS) by the biomagnetic method have been reported on both normal subjects and patients affected by different kinds of conduction disturbances. A first attempt to interpret the experimental results by means of a theoretical model satisfactorily accounted for the measured «ramp» patterns. Moreover, a good temporal coincidence was observed between magnetic signals and invasively recorded His bundle electrograms (HBE). An alternative explanation of the «ramp» pattern, in terms of atrial repolarization, has been recently proposed on the basis of animal experimental investigation. In order to try to solve this problem, we have carried out a twofold approach: a new second-order gradiometer, specifically designed for HPS activity investigation has been successfully set up and tested; it provides a sensitivity of $$20fT/\sqrt {Hz}$$ in the band width of interest ((0.5÷300) Hz). Second, a new model based on a closer correspondence to anatomical features of the HPS has been developed. This model provides well-defined patterns which are in quite good agreement with experimental results.

    Notes: Summary Corresponding electrical and magnetic components of the brain’s visual evoked response peaking at 120 and 180 ms poststimulus are examined. Results show that both magnetic components are localized in the superficial occipital cortex tangential to the scalp. The distribution ofM120 suggests that the generators for the electrical and magnetic components are related, but the electrical field recorded is an elaborate modification of that produced by the source.

Le mappature delle risposte magnetiche hanno mostrato attività a livello delle cortecce di sensibilità somatica primarie e secondarie.     Notes: Summary Somatosensory evoked magnetic fields were compared with corresponding electric scalp potentials in order to study their neural sources. Mappings of the magnetic responses showed activity at the primary and secondary somatosensory cortices. Si presentano alcuni risultati di un calcolo numerico basato su un modello a cavo lineare e li si confronta con i risultati sperimentali.
    Notes: Summary In this paper we present some tentative model considerations, based on the concept of an equivalent current dipole to account for observed auditory evoked responses, with the aim of attempting a comparison of variations in amplitude and latency with calculations based on Rall’s greatly simplified nerve model. A phenomenological analysis of experimental data on the late, auditory evoked magnetic field from the human auditory cortex is presented. The emphasis is here placed on relations between signal properties (e.g. amplitude and latency) and between signal properties and stimulus properties (e.g. amplitude/latency and relative frequency glide Δf/f for a frequency glide stimulus) rather than on questions related to the location of the equivalent current dipole,e.g. the tonotopic organization discussed by Elberlinget al. and by Romaniet al.. Some results of a numerical calculation based on a linear-cable model are presented and compared with experimental results.

Il sensore magnetico era un gradiometro SQUID a forma di otto con una linea di base di 4 cm orientato in modo da essere massimamente sensibile a un dipolo di corrente orientato perpendicolarmente alla fissure di Sylvio. Gli stimoli erano impulsi sonori di 1 kHz, lunghi 100 ms con un intervallo modale tra stimoli di 700 ms emessi a livelli di pressione sonora di 40, 60, 80 e 100 dB. Si è trovato che l’ampiezza AEF è correlata all’intensità dello stimolo in modo quadratico, l’ampiezza AEP in modo, lineare. Gli AEF erano di ampiezza maggiore in risposta alla stimolazione contralaterale che in risposta alla stimolazione ipsilaterale. Gli AEP non presentano questa relazione. In un secondo esperimento gli AEF e AEP dell’emisfero destro in risposta al tono di stimolazione nell’orecchio controlaterale in questi 12 soggetti sono stati combinati con dati simili precedenti su 24 soggetti, ottenendo cosí un totale di 36 soggetti, per esaminare la comparabilità della forma dell’onadaP50 di AEP e dell’analogaP50 di AEF. Si è trovato che la latenza dellaP50 decrese in funzione dell’intensità crescente dello stimolo sia per AEF che per AEP, e che la latenza diP50 è decisamente inferiore nelle registrazioni magnetiche rispetto alle registrazioni del potenziale.
    Notes: Summary Auditory evoked magnetic fields (AEFs) and EEG auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) were recorded from left and right auditory cortical regions of 12 normal adult subjects. The magnetic sensor was a figure-eight SQUID gradiometer with a 4 cm baseline oriented so as to be maximally sensitive to a current dipole oriented normal to the Sylvian fissure. Stimuli were 100 ms long 1 kHz tone pips with a modal interstimulus interval of 700 ms delivered at sound pressure levels of 40, 60, 80 and 100 dB. AEF amplitude was found to be related to stimulus intensity in a quadratic fashion, AEP amplitude in a linear fashion. AEFs were of larger amplitude in response to contralateral as compared to ipsilateral stimulation. AEPs did not exhibit such a relationship. In a second experiment right-hemisphere AEFs and AEPs in response to contralateral ear tone stimulation in these 12 subjects were combined with similar previous data from 24 subjects, providing a total of 36 subjects, to examine the comparability of the AEPP50 wave form and the AEFP50 analog. The latency of theP50 was found to decrease as a function of increasing stimulus intensity for both AEFs and AEPs, and theP50 latency was consistently shorter in magnetic compared to potential recordings.

Sono stati usate 2 diverse strumentazioni per le misure magnetiche. Ambedue usavano gradiometri di second’ordine disegnati specificatamente per gli studi sul cervello: 2.9 cm di diametro, 5 cm di baseline. Uno SQUID r.f. e uno SQUID d.c. erano accoppiati ai gradiometri. I livelli di rumore misurati sono stati rispettivamente di $$40fT/\sqrt {Hz}$$ e $$25fT/\sqrt {Hz}$$ . In alcuni soggetti sono state effettuate mappe di campi magnetici generati dall’attività spontanea del cervello. Le mappe dell’ampiezza media dei segnali del ritmo α hanno mostrato 2 massimi dell’attività su 2 regioni simmetriche dello scalpo. Comunque, malgrado una generale simmetria fra gli emisferi, la complessità delle mappe misurate suggerisce una corrispondente complessità dei generatori responsabili dell’attività α.
    Notes: Summary An investigation of the spontaneous brain activity from normal subjects has been carried out by means of the neuromagnetic method. Two different systems were used for magnetic measurements. Both used 2nd-order gradiometers specifically designed for brain studies: 2.9 cm diameter, 5 cm baseline. A r.f. SQUID and a d.c. SQUID were coupled to the gradiometers. The measured noise levels are $$40fT/\sqrt {Hz}$$ and $$25fT/\sqrt {Hz}$$ , respectively. Thorough magnetic mapping of the spontaneous activity was performed on a few subjects. By mapping the average amplitude of the α-rhythm signals two maxima of activity over two symmetric regions of the scalp were clearly observed. Despite a general symmetry between hemispheres, however, the complexity of the measured maps suggests a corresponding complexity of the generators responsible for α-activity.

Si conoscono pochissimi contributi in questo campo. A parte il lavoro del gruppo di biomagnetismo di Roma, il solo contributo clinico finora è stato quello di Hughes e collaboratori che era abbastanza limitato nel numero e nella scelta dei soggetti studiati. La nostra esperienza condotta fin dal 1980 su un gran numero di casi (principalmente epilessie focali) mostra che il MEG può evidenziare attività significative anche se non sono presenti anormalità EEG; esso ha inoltre una risoluzione spaziale maggiore rispetto all’EEG. I foci epilettici mostrano un’area limitata di attività massima. Finora non è stata osservata nessuna evidenza sperimentale di una differente distribuzione delle ampiezze del campo sullo scalpo. La risoluzione spaziale del MEG riguarda anche la possibilità di risolvere la morfologia dei segnali EEG (per esempio onde aguzze EEG risolte in gruppi di spikes dal MEG) o di separare topograficamente le anormalità EEG mescolate e non ben localizzate (per esempio, attività delta ed epilettiche mescolate nell’EEG e discriminate nel MEG). I migliori risultati si osservano quando la localizzazione è nella corteccia esterna. Dopo una descrizione del materiale studiato, si sottolinea l’importanza dei risultati ottenuti per la prima volta in casi di epilessie focali.
    Notes: Summary So far spontaneous magnetoencephalography (MEG) in normal and pathological subjects has not been deeply investigated. Very few contributions in this field are available. Aside from the work of the Rome biomagnetic group in this field, the only clinical contribution up to now has been that of Hughes and co-workers which was rather limited in the number and in the selection of subjects investigated. Our experience, carried out since 1980 on a large number of cases—mainly focal epilepsies— shows that the MEG may evidence significant activities even if EEG abnormalities are not present and has a higher spatial resolution with respect to the EEG. Epileptic foci show a limited area of maximal activity. So far no experimental evidence of a different distribution of field amplitude over the scalp has been observed. The spatial resolution of the MEG also regards the possibility of resolving the morphology of EEG signals (for instance, EEG sharp waves resolved into groups of spikes by MEG) or topographically separate EEG abnormalities mixed up and not well localized (for instance, delta and epileptic activities mixed up in the EEG, but differently in the MEG). The best results are observed when the localization is in the outer cortex. After a description of the material studied, the importance of the results obtained for the first time in cases of focal epilepsies is outlined.

    Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Durante l’ultimo anno gli autori hanno condotto una ricerca sistematica su un gran numero di soggetti patologici registrando simultaneamente l’EEG e il MEG. La presente versione del nostro apparato sperimentale permette di effettuare misure MEG con un solo sensore magnetico, impedendo la rilevazione simultanea di attività MEG su punti differenti della testa. Ciò ha condotto gli autori a concentrarsi sulle epilessie focali. Fin dalle prime misure il sensore magnetico ha dimostrato un notevole potere localizzante, rafforzando l’interesse per la localizzazione in casi patologici. In questo lavoro si riportano risultati che sembrano confermare la straordìnaria capacità delle misure MEG nel localizzare sorgenti di attività cerebrali patologiche in casi di epilessie focali.
    Notes: Summary During the last year the authors have been carrying out a systematic investigation on a large number of pathological subjects simultaneously recording the EEG and the MEG. The present version of our experimental apparatus allows MEG measurements with only one magnetic detector, thus preventing the detection of simultaneous MEG activities over different points of the head. This has led the authors to concentrate upon focal epilepsies. Since the first measurements a remarkable localizing power was shown by the magnetic detector, thus strengthening the interest in pathological localization. In this contribution we report results which seem to confirm the extraordinary capability of MEG measurements to localize sources of pathological brain activities in cases of focal epilepsies.
