We present an inexpensive, relatively simple optical method to measure the magnetostriction curve of single ribbons or bulk samples that can be as small as a few millimeters. The device is small enough to be placed between the poles of an electromagnet. It uses a single-mode bidirectional fiber coupler as a beam splitter for the operation of a Fabry–Perot interferometer. Both longitudinal (λ(parallel)) and transverse (λ⊥) magnetostriction can be obtained. As an example, we present results on nickel, Fe80B20, and Terfenol-D.
