    Description: Two NASA-sponsored cost-constrained mission implementations for the exploration of Pluto are described. One is the Pluto Fast Flyby (PFF) mission, which utilizes an 83 kg spacecraft to be launched in 1998 aboard a Titan IV (Solid Rocket Motor Upgrade)/Centaur) for an about 7-year-long direct trajectory to Pluto, which will carry an integrated CCD-imaging/UV spectrometer, with a possible integrated IR spectrometer. The other is the Pluto-350 spacecraft, weighing about 316 kg, which will carry a broader instrument set, greater redundancy, and which will require greater than 11 year flight time. Pluto-350 will be launched in 2001 aboard a Delta or Atlas, toward earth and Jupiter swingbys to provide the energy to reach Pluto.

    Description: A brief survey is given of the principal kinds of mechanisms that are believed to be important to the evolution of terrestrial-planet atmospheres. Escape processes are thermal, both gentle and hydrodynamic; various nonthermal mechanisms; and impact erosion. Interactions with the solid body are also important, and show profound differences between the various planets. The paper concludes with a brief survey of the evolution of Venus, earth, and Mars and a few remarks on the principal processes believed to be occurring today.

    Description: Laboratory measurements have been conducted of the opacity of gaseous SO2 in a CO2 atmosphere at 12.3 cm, 1.32 cm, and 0.32 cm, with a view to the effects of this gas on the mm-wave emission of the Venus atmosphere. Close agreement is noted between the results obtained and the absorptivity predicted from a Van Vleck-Weisskopf formalism at the two shortest wavelengths, but not at the longest. These results have been incorporated into a radiative transfer model in order to infer an abundance profile for gaseous SO2 in Venus' middle atmosphere, and are also used to ascertain the effects of a SO2/CO2 gaseous mixture on the mm-wavelength spectrum of Venus.

    Description: Information on the petrology and ages of the SNC meteorites, together with geological data derived from Viking Orbiter images, are used to identify 25 candidate impact craters in the Tharsis region of Mars that could possibly be the source craters for these meteorites. The craters chosen as candidate source craters had diameters greater than 10 km, morphologies indicative of young craters, and satisfied both the petrological criteria of the SNCs and the proposed 1.3 Ga crystallization ages. On the basis of the constraints implied by the identification of the candidate source craters, interpretations of the absolute chronology of Mars are proposed.

    Description: The effect of substituting iron by aluminum in polymorphs of Fe2O3 and FeOOH on their reflectivity characteristics was investigated by comparing data on visible and NIR reflectivities and on static magnetic, XRD, and Moessbauer properties for a family of aluminum-substituted hematites alpha-(Fe,Al)2O3, with compositions where the values of the Al/(Al+Fe) ratio were up to 0.61. Samples were prepared by oxidation of magnetite, dehydroxylation of goethite, and direct precipitation. The analytical methods used for obtaining diffuse reflectivity spectra (350-2200 nm), Moessbauer spectra, and static magnetic data are those described by Morris et al. (1989).

    Description: The Magellan images showed presence of radar-dark shadowlike disks surrounding small impact craters on the Venusian surface, which are also found without craters. This paper examines the hypothesis of Phillips et al. (1991) that the dark shadows formed where shock waves from airbursting impactors met the ground, pulverizing decimeter-scale surface features. A simple analytic model is used successfully to simulate the catastrophic disruption and the deceleration of impactors in a thick atmosphere to reproduce observed Venusian cratering statistics and generate radar-dark disks by the impact of atmospheric shock waves on the surface.

    Description: The evolution of the entire planetary system has been numerically integrated for a time span of nearly 100 million years. This calculation confirms that the evolution of the solar system as a whole is chaotic, with a time scale of exponential divergence of about 4 million years. Additional numerical experiments indicate that the Jovian planet subsystem is chaotic, although some small variations in the model can yield quasi-periodic motion. The motion of Pluto is independently and robustly chaotic.

    Description: A basic model for latitudinal transport of nitrogen is reviewed focusing on its limitations and some complications associated with surface and atmospheric physics. Data obtained by 1989 Voyager encounter with the Neptune system revealed the complexity in the pure nitrogen transport which is caused by the nonuniform albedo of the frosts. It is concluded that Triton is similar to Mars in terms of the complexity of volatile transport and to understand Triton's surface-atmosphere system, Mars may be a very good analog.

    Description: The puzzle presented by Neptune's circulation is evidenced by its wide spectrum of wind speeds and differences between the drift rate of its longest lived features and its finer scale cloud forms, unlike Jupiter or Saturn. Neptune's clouds appear dynamic and show strong evidence of atmospheric waves, making cloud motion measurements somewhat difficult and requiring some departures from the methods which have been traditionally used to determine atmospheric circulations. New measurements of cloud motions of Neptune that confirm the general characteristics reported by Smith et al. (1989) are presented below. Besides greater number of measurements from a higher time resolution data set, the new results reveal the shape of the westerly jet at 72 deg S latitude.

    Description: This first analysis of Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) plasma analyzer electron measurements obtained in early 1992 during teh PVO entry phase of the mission indicates the presence downstream from the terminator of a depletion or 'bite out' of energetic ionosheath electrons similar to that observed on Mariner 10. There is more than one possible explanation for this energetic electron depletion. If it is due to atmospheric scattering, the electrons traveling along draped magnetic flux tubes that thread through the Venus neutral atmosphere would lose energy from impact ionization with oxygen. The cross-section for such electron impact ionization of oxygen has a peak near 100 eV, and it remains high above this energy, so atmospheric loss could provde a natural process for electrons at these energies to be selectively removed. In this case, our results are consistent with the Kar et al. (1994) study of PVO atmospheric entry ion mass spectrometer data, which indicates that electron impact plays a significant role in maintaining the nightside ionosphere. Although it is appealing to interpret the energetic electron depletion in terms of direct atmospheric scattering, alternatively it could result from strong draping which connects the depletion region magnetically to the weak downstream bow shock and thereby reduces the electron source strength.

    Description: We report the discovery of Langmuir oscillations in a very low plasma density region in the Venus magnetotail. These waves are observed more often at 30 kHz, but also at 5.4 kHz indicating densities as low as 0.3 cu cm in the central tail lobe. The Langmuir probe on board the Pioneer Venus Orbiter cannot resolve such a low plasma density. We use the magnetic field strength and the assumption of total pressure balance to infer the electron temperature as a test of the Langmuir wave interpretation. By investigating the spatial distribution of this wave activity we find that the plasma cavity is ordered in a coordinate system defined by the interplanetary magnetic field and is found at either side of the central tail current sheet.

    Description: Radially fractured domes are large, tectonic and topographic features discovered on the surface of Venus by the Magellan spacecraft. They are thought to be due to uplift over mantle diapirism, and to date are known to occur only on Venus. Since Venus and the Earth are grossly similar in size, composition and structure, we seek to understand why these features have not been seen on the Earth. We model the uplift and fracturing over a mantle diapir as functions of lithospheric thickness and diapir size and depth. We find that lithospheres of the same thickness on the Earth and Venus should respond similarly to the same sized diapir, and that radially fractured domes should form most readily in thin oceanic lithospheres on Earth if diapiric activity is similar on the two planets. However, our current knowledge of the Earth's oceanic floors is insufficient to confirm or deny the presence of radially fractured domes. We compute the expected dimensions for these features on the Earth and suggest a search for them to determine whether mantle diapirism operates similarly on the Earth and Venus.

    Description: Ureilites containing homogeneous Fo76 olivine cores in intimate co-existence with graphite must have recrystallized at pressures of at least approximately 100 bars to suppress smelting of the fayalite component of the olivine to Fe metal. Smelting of olivine and pyroxene-saturated magmatic liquids produces orthopyroxene-without-olivine crystalline derivatives unlike those in ureilites. Thus the Mg# compositional variation within the ureilite suite, which is commonly attributed to partial smelting, cannot plausibly be produced by assemblages rich in liquid. In situ smelting of graphitic olivine + pigeonite crystal mushes can produce the correct crystal assemblage, but fails to provide a plausible account for the removal of metal from ureilites or for the correlation of Mg# with Delta O-17. Even if Mg# and Delta O-17 variations are established in the nebula, ureilite recrystallization with graphite must have occurred at pressures greater than the minima we have experimentally established, corresponding to parent objects not less than approximately 100 km in radius.

    Description: Previous spectroscopic studies of the lunar crater Bullialdus, located in the Nubium Basin, indicated an unusual stratigraphy of two gabbroic layers overlying a noritic unit. The possible existence of a layered mafic pluton at Bullialdus was suggested. To investigate the geologic context with more detailed spatial information, charge-coupled device (CCD) images of Bullialdus were obtained using eight filters. A linear mixing model was used to investigate the fractional abundances of spectral end-members chosen from within the multispectral image. Since the reflectance properties of lunar materials over this wavelength range are sensitive to variations in composition and soil maturity, fractional abundance images were used to create a new geologic map of the crater. The spatial relationships of the surface materials confirm the previously inferred stratigraphy, and further reveal the central peaks to exhibit two distinct compositional units: noritic anorthosite and anorthositic norite. Three models for the origin of the observed stratigraphy are considered: Bullialdus has excavated stratigraphic units containing (1) early mare basalt overlying anorthositic-noritic crustal material, (2) part of a layered mafic pluton, and/or (3) part of an impact melt sheet formed by the Nubium Basin impact event.

    Description: We used a radial diffusion code for energetic electrons in Jupiter's magnetosphere to investigate variations in Jupiter's radio emission due to changes in the electron phase space density at L shells between 6 and 50, and due to changes in the radial diffusion parameters. We suggest that the observed variations in Jupiter's radio emission are likely caused by changes in the electron phase space density at some boundary L(sub 1) is greater than 6, if the primary mode of transport of energetic electrons is radial diffusion driven by fluctuating electric and/or magnetic fields induced by upper atmospheric turbulence. We noticed an excellent empirical correlation, both in phase and relative amplitude, between changes in the solar wind ram pressure and Jupiter's synchrotron radiation if the electron phase space density at the boundary L(sub 1) (L(sub 1) is approximately equal to 20-50) varies linearly with the square root of the solar wind ram pressure, f is approximately (N(sub s)nu(exp 2 sub s))(exp 1/2). The calculations were carried out with a diffusion coefficient D(sub LL) = D(sub n)L(exp n) with n = 3. The diffusion coefficient which best fit the observed variations in Jupiter's synchrotron radiation D(sub 3) = 1.3 +/- 0.2 x 10(exp -9)/s is approximately 0.041/yr, which corresponds to a lagtime of approximately 2 years. We further show that the observed short term (days-weeks) variations in Jupiter's radio emission cannot be explained adequately when radial diffusion is taken into account.

    Description: Merrihueite (K,Na)2(Fe,Mg)5Si12O30 (na less than 0.5, fe greater than 0.5, where na = Na/(Na + K), fe = Fe/(Fe + Mg) in atomic ratio) is a rare mineral described only in several chondrules and irregularly-shaped fragments in the Mezo-Madaras L3 chondrite (Dodd et al., 1965; Wood and Holmberg, 1994). Roedderite (Na,K)2(Mg,Fe)5Si12O30 (na greater than 0.5, fe less than 0.5) has been found only in enstatite chondrites and in the reduced, subchondritic silicate inclusions in IAB irons (Fuchs, 1966; Rambaldi et al., 1984; Olsen, 1967). We described silica-roedderite-bearing clasts in L/LL3.5 ALHA77011 and LL3.7 ALHA77278, a silica-roedderite-bearing chondrule in L3 Mezo-Madaras, and a silica-merrihueite-bearing chondrule in L/LL3.5 ALHA77115. The findings of merrihueite and roedderite in ALHA77011, ALHA77115, ALHA77278 and Mezo-Madaras fill the compositional gap betweeen previously described roedderite in enstatite chondrites and silicate inclusions in IAB irons and merrihueite in Mezo-Madaras, suggesting that there is a complete solid solution of roedderite and merrihueite in meteorites. We infer that the silica- and merrihueite/roedderite-bearing chondrules and clasts experienced a complex formational history including: (a) fractional condensation in the solar nebular that produced Si-rich and Al-poor precursors, (b) melting of fractionated nebular solids resulting in the formation of silica-pyroxene chondrules, (c) in some cases, fragmentation in the nebula or on a parent body, (d) reaction of silica with alkali-rich gas that formed merrihueite/roedderite on a parent body, (e) formation of fayalitic olivine and feerosilite-rich pyroxene due to reaction of silica with oxidized Fe on a parent body, and (f) minor thermal metamorphism, possibly generated by impacts.

    Description: A new titanium-bearing calcium aluminosilicate mineral has been identified in coarse-grained calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions (CAIs) from carbonaceous chondrites. The formula for this phase, which we have temporarily termed 'UNK,' is Ca3Ti(Al,Ti)2(Si,Al)3O14, and it is present in at least 8 of the 20 coarse-grained CAIs from the Allende CV3 chondrite examined as part of this project. The phase occurs in Types A and B1 inclusions as small tabular crystal oriented along two mutually perpendicular planes in melilite. UNK crystallizes from melts in dynamic crystallization experiments conducted in air from four bulk compositions modeled after Types A, B1, B2 and C inclusions. Cooling rates resulting in crystallization of UNK ranged from 0.5 to 200 C/h from maximum (initial) temperatures of 1375 to 1580 C. Only below 1190 C does UNK itself begin to crystallize. To first order, the presence or absence of UNK from individual experiments can be understood in terms of the compositions of residual melts and nucleation probabilities. Compositions of synthetic and meteoritic UNK are very similar in terms of major oxides, differing only in the small amounts of trivalent Ti(7-13% of total Ti) in meteoritic samples. UNK crystallized from the Type A analog is similar texturally to that found in CAIs, although glass, which is typically associated with synthetic UNK, is not observed in the meteoritic occurrences. A low Ti end-member of UNK ('Si-UNK') with a composition near that of Ca3Al2Si4O14 was produced in a few samples from the Type B1 analog. This phase has not been found in the meteoritic inclusions.

    Description: Plausible models of the early history of Titan suggest that ammonia and water were present in liquid form at the surface. We show here by thermodynamic modeling that such an ocean could have reacted with silicates to put substantial quantities of sodium and potassium into solution. Following the formation of an ice crust by cooling, mantle ammonia-water fluids enriched in potassium would have been brought to the surface through the cryogenic equivalent of volcanism. Later impacts would have released the Ar-40 produced by decay of the K-40 into the atmosphere. The abundance of atmospheric Ar-40, measurable by the Huygens probe gas chromatograph mass spectrometer, may be dominated by this source and hence gives a proxy indication of the volume of ammonia-water resurfacing on Titan over geologic time.

    Description: The Termoskan instrument on board the Phobos '88 spacecraft acquired the highest spatial resolution thermal infrared emission data ever obtained for Mars. Included in the thermal images 2 km/pixel, midday observations of several major channel and valley systems including significant portions of Shalbatana, Ravi, Al-Qahira, and Ma'adim Valles, the channel connecting Valles Marineris with Hydraotes Chaos, and channel material in Eos Chasma. Termoskan also observed small portions of the southern beginnings of Simud, Tiu, and Ares Valles and some channel material in Gangis Chasma. Simultaneous broadband visible reflectance data were obtained for all but Ma'adim Vallis. We find that most of the channels and valleys have higher thermal inertias than their surroundings, consistent with previous thermal studies. We show for the first time that the thermal inertia boundaries closely match flat channel floor boundaries. Also, buttes within channels have inertias similiar to the plains surrounding the channels, suggesting the buttes are remnants of a contiguous plains surface. Lower bounds on typical channel thermal inertias range from 8.4 to 12.5 (10(exp -3) cal cm(exp -2) s(exp -1/2)/K) (352 to 523 in SI units of J m(exp -2) s(exp -1/2)/K). Lower bounds on inertia differences with the surrounding heavily cratered plains range from 1.1 to 3.5 (46 to 147 SI). Atmospheric and geometric effects are not sufficient to cause the observed channel inertia enhancements. We favor nonaeolian explanations of the overall channel inertia enhancements based primarily upon the channel floors' thermal homogeneity and the strong correlation of thermal boundaries with floor boundaries. However, localized, dark regions within some channels are likely aeolian in nature as reported previously. Most channels with increased inertias have fretted morphologies such as flat floors with steep walls. Eastern Ravi and southern Ares Valles, the only major channel sections observed that have obvious catastrophic flood bedforms, do not have enhanced inertias. Therefore, we favor fretting processes over catastrophic flooding for explaining the inertia enhancements. We postulate that the inertia enhancements were caused either by the original fretting process or by a process involving the bonding of fines due to an increased availability of water, either initially or secondarily.

    Description: Voyager 1 plasma wave measurements of Saturn's inner magnetosphere are reviewed with regard to interpretative aspects of the wave spectrum. A comparison of the wave emission profile with the electron plasma frequency obtained from in situ measurements of the thermal ion density shows good agreement with various features in the wave data identified as electrostatic modes and electromagnetic radio waves. Theoretical calculations of the critical flux of superthermal electrons able to generate whistler-mode waves and electrostatic electron cyclotron harmonic waves through a loss-cone instability are presented. The comparison of model results with electron measurements shows excellent agreement, thereby lending support to the conclusion that a moderate perpendicular anisotropy in the hot electron distribution is present in the equatorial region of L = 5-8.

    Description: The paper considers isotopic hydrogen fractionation processes in the Venusian exosphere due to ionosphere-exosphere coupling by addressing two deficiencies in the present theory of differential escape. First, a set of D/H isotopic fractionation curves is derived for the ion-neutral interactions of charge and collisional momentum transfer, and these are compared with the results of Gurwell and Yung (1993) for hot O collisional ejection. Then, the question of the relative importance of collisional ejection in atmospheric escape is reexamined using two simple exosphere models. It is shown that O-O collisions suppress the high energy component of the hot O distribution by more than a factor of 10. Moreover, the ballistic trajectories of fast O atoms that reach the nighttime reservoir of exospheric hydrogen favor downward scatter of D and H rather than their escape. It is concluded that, due to severe limits placed on the effectiveness of collisional ejection, the differential escape of D and H from Venus is determined by charge exchange interactions rather than the collisional ejection.

    Description: A theoretical model of thermal ion and electron temperatures in Saturn's inner magnetospheres is presented which is based on a fast model of radial diffusive plasma transport. It is shown that the ion and electron temperatures and the latitudinal behavior of temperatures are consistent with the fast diffusion hypothesis, assuming that O(+) is the dominant ion and that its source is the Dione-Tethys plasma torus. The present results reinforce the conclusions of Barbosa (1990).

    Description: Saturn's faint and narrow G Ring is only visible to the eye in two Voyager images, each taken at a rather high solar phase angle of about 160 deg. In this paper we introduce a new photometric technique for averaging across multiple Voyager images, and use it to detect the G Ring at several additional viewing geometries. The resultant phase curve suggests that the G Ring is composed of dust particles obeying a very steep power-law size distribution. The dust is generally smaller than that seen in other rings, ranging down to 0.03 micron. The G Ring occupies the region between orbital radii 166,000 and 173,000 km, and has a peak somewhat closer to the inner edge. Based on these limits, we demonstrate that Voyager 2 passed through and directly sampled this ring during its 1981 encounter with Saturn. Combined analysis of additional data sets suggests that a population of larger bodies is also present in the G Ring; these bodies occupy a narrower band near the observed peak and are likely the source for the visible dust. Based on some preliminary dynamical models, we propose that these larger bodies represent leftover debris from the collisional breakup of a small moon in Saturn's distant past.

    Description: A study of Martian ejecta blankets is carried out using the high-resolution thermal IR/visible data from the Termoskan instrument aboard Phobos '88 mission. It is found that approximately 100 craters within the Termoskan data have an ejecta blanket distinct in the thermal infrared (EDITH). These features are examined by (1) a systematic examination of all Termoskan data using high-resolution image processing; (2) a study of the systematics of the data by compiling and analyzing a data base consisting of geographic, geologic, and mormphologic parameters for a significant fraction of the EDITH and nearby non-EDITH; and (3) qualitative and quantitative analyses of localized regions of interest. It is noted that thermally distinct ejecta blankets are excellent locations for future landers and remote sensing because of relatively dust-free surface exposures of material excavated from depth.

    Description: Eastern Aphrodite Terra, a deformed region with high topographic relief on Venus, has been interpreted as analogous to a terrestrial extensional or convergent plate boundary. However, analysis of geological and structural relations indicates that the tectonics of eastern Aphrodite Terra is dominated by blistering of the crust by magma diapirs. The findings imply that, within this region, vertical tectonism dominates over horizontal tectonism and, consequently, that this region is neither a divergent nor a convergent plate boundary.

    Description: We have studied nineteen anhydrous chondritic interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) using analytical electron microscopy. We have determined a method for quantitative light element EDX analysis of small particles and have applied these techniques to a group of IDPs. Our results show that some IDPs have significantly higher bulk carbon abundances than do carbonaceous chondrites. We have also identified a relationship between carbon abundance and silicate mineralogy in our set of anhydrous IDPs. In general, these particles are dominated by pyroxene, olivine, or a subequal mixture of olivine and pyroxene. The pyroxene-dominated IDPs have a higher carbon abundance than those dominated by olivines. Members of the mixed mineralogy IDPs can be grouped with either the pyroxene- or olivine-dominated particles based on their carbon abundance. The high carbon, pyroxene-dominated particles have primitive mineralogies and bulk compositions which show strong similarities to cometary dust particles. We believe that the lower carbon, olivine-dominated IDPs are probably derived from asteroids. Based on carbon abundances, the mixed-mineralogy group represents particles derived from either comets or asteroids. We believe that the high carbon, pyroxene-rich anhydrous IDPs are the best candidates for cometary dust.

    Description: Data on planets around pulsars are summarized, and different models intended to explain the formation mechanism are described. Both theoretical and observational evidence suggest that very special circumstances are required for the formation of planetary systems around pulsars, namely, the prior presence of a millisecond pulsar with a close binary companion, probably a low mass main-sequence star. It is concluded that the discovery of two planets around PSR 1257+12 is important for better understanding the problems of dynamics and stellar evolution. The process of planetary formation should be learned through intensive studies of the properties of disks near young objects and application of techniques for detection of planets around main-sequence solar-type stars.

    Description: The formation of terrestrial planets and the cores of Jovian planets is reviewed in the framework of the planetesimal hypothesis, wherein planets are assumed to grow via the pairwise accumulation of small solid bodies. Emphasis is placed on the dynamics of solid body accretion from kilometer size planetesimals to terrestrial type planets. This stage of planetary growth is least dependent on the characteristics of the evolutionary state of the central star. It is concluded that the evolution of the planetesimal size distribution is determined by the gravitationally enhanced collision cross-section, which favors collisions between planetesimals with smaller velocities. Runaway growth of the largest planetesimal in each accretion zone appears to be a likely outcome. The subsequent accumulation of the resulting protoplanets leads to a large degree of radial mixing in the terrestrial planet region, and giant impacts are probable.

    Description: Methane molecules escaping from Pluto's atmosphere are ionized, and the resulting ions are picked up by the solar wind. The mass loading associated with this ion pick-up can produce a cometlike interaction of the solar wind with Pluto. Heavy ion gyroradii are as large as a half million km in the weak interplanetary magnetic field that exists at 30 AU, which is about an order of magnitude larger than the size of the 'interaction region'. We have calculated velocity space distributions of pick-up ions using numerically determined ion trajectories. The predicted pick-up ion fluxes are high enough to be detectable by standard charged particle detectors as far upstream of Pluto as 10 exp 6 km.

    Description: Data collected by the Pioneer Venus Large Probe Neutral Mass Spectrometer are presented and discussed. Results indicate the presence of a large amount of methane in the Venus atmosphere from 60 km to the surface. Deuterium transfer from atmospheric HDO to poorly deuterated methane may account for the puzzling apparent gradient in the water vapor mixing ration below 10 km. Deuterium transfer within the mass spectrometer may cause reduction in the apparent ratio of HDO to H2O. Accounting for the deuterium atoms leads to a revised water vapor mixing ratio of 28 ppm. Arguments against the methane detected being purely atmospheric are overwhelming. The methane may have been generated by a reaction between a highly deuterated atmospheric constituent and a poorly deuterated instrumental contaminant.

    Description: A numerical model is presented of the integrated role of seasonal water cycle on the evolution of polar deposits on Mars over the last 10 million years. From the model, it is concluded that the only major difference between the polar caps which affects their long-term behavior is ultimately the difference in their elevations. Because of that difference, there is a preference for CO2 frost to stay longer on the northern polar cap. The average difference in sublimation at the caps results in a net south-to-north transport of water ice over long time scales. Superimposed on any long-term behavior is a transfer of water ice between the caps on the 10 exp 5 - 10 exp 6 yr time scales. The amount of water exchanged is small compared to the total ice content of the polar deposits.

    Description: A search of reflectance spectra of C- P-, D- and S-class asteroids to hunt for the Soret band near 0.4 micron that is indicative of porphyrins yielded an identification of an 0.43 micron absorption feature in 11 primitive asteroids of the C, P, and G classes and in one S-class asteroid. It is proposed that the feature is an Fe(3+) spin-forbidden transition in aqueously altered material, possibly located near 0.43 micron due to an enhancement effect similar to the mechanism operating in jarosite. The significance of the feature for the aqueous alteration history of these asteroids is addressed.

    Description: The effect is analyzed of variations in glass, end member abundance, and compositional variations on the reflectance spectra of glass and mafic silicate-bearing mineral mixtures chosen to reproduce spectral reflectance properties of lunar regoliths. The spectral properties of the glasses appear to be sensitive to parameters such as fusion techniques and initial composition. Variations in these parameters can yield classes which show spectral variations far in excess of those found for naturally occurring lunar impact-derived glasses and surface fines. The addition of glass to a mafic silicate-bearing assemblage results in a reduction in overall reflectance, band depths, and band area ratios, as well as a general decrease in band II minimum wavelength position and an increase in interband peak position.

    Description: Two primary causes of near-IR continuum slope variations have been observed in an investigation of the bidirectional reflectance characteristics of ferric coatings on the continuum slope of Mars. First, the presence of a thin ferric coating on a dark substrate produces a negative continuum slope due to the wavelength-dependent transparency of the ferric coating. Second, wavelength-dependent directional reflectance occurs when the surface particles are tightly packed, particle sizes are on the order of or smaller than the wavelength of light, or the surface is otherwise smooth on the order of the wavelength of light. Based on these results, the annuli on the flanks of Olympus Mons which are defined by reflectance and continuum slope are consistent with spatial variations in surface texture and possibly with spatial variations in the thickness of a ferric dust coating or rind.

    Description: A stress analysis of tectonic patterns near Venusian coronae is reported. Combined local corona stresses and uniform regional stresses are used to predict patterns of surface tectonic features. The patterns are compared to those of coronae on Magellan images to determine the regional stress and elastic lithospheric thickness about the coronae. Regional stresses of 0.1-0.6 kbar and elastic lithospheric thicknesses of 10 +/- 5 km are estimated for three specific coronae.

    Description: Catastrophic fragmentation of the ring moons of Uranus and Neptune occurs in approximately 10 exp 8 years. The fate of the debris following a fragmenting impact is central to understanding the evolution of these satellites and the hypothesized origin of rings from their debris. In this paper the possible effects of the velocity distribution of fragments following a catastrophic fragmentation on satellite diminution via a collisional cascade is examined. Fragment velocities are critical in the evolution of the collisional cascade because of the possibility of reaccretion following disruption. The fragment velocity distribution is used to calculate the initial phase space distribution of the new ring particles. This provides a physically realistic initial condition for simulations of the collisional evolution of planetary rings.

    Description: We outline for the first time the effect of such nonthermal line broadening processes as turbulence, random waves, convection, etc., on the shape and intensity of the H Ly-alpha line resonance scattered from the atmosphere of Jupiter. We show how a nonthermal velocity field confined to the bulge region, in the upper atmosphere of Jupiter, may account for most of the H Ly-alpha bulge features. Both the shape and the brightness of the Ly-alpha line from the bulge region as reported by the IUE instrument and the Voyager UV Spectrometer can be recovered assuming resonant scattering with a total atomic hydrogen of about 4 x 10 exp 17/sq cm, and a nonthermal component H of about 2 x 10 exp 15/sq cm above the thermopause.

    Description: The discovery circumstances of the first asteroids ever observed outside the earth's atmosphere but within the neighborhood of the earth-moon system are described. Four natural objects with diameters in the range 5-50 m were detected during a search for earth-approaching asteroids conducted each month at the 0.91-m Spacewatch Telescope at Kitt Peak. An additional 19 earth approachers with sizes in the range 50 m to 5 km were discovered. These obervations determine the cumulative flux of asteroids near earth as a function of absolute magnitude. For asteroids larger than about 100 m, a power-law dependence with exponent of about 0.9 is observed, consistent with their evolution from the main-belt population. At about 10 m, the flux is more than two orders of magnitude greater than this power-law extrapolation.

    Description: Singly ionized suprathermal ions upstream of the earth's bow shock have been detected by using the time-of-flight spectrometer SULEICA on the AMPTE/IRM satellite. The data were collected between August and December 1985. The flux of the ions in the mass range between 23 and 37 amu is highly anisotropic towards the earth. The ions are observed with a period of about 29 days around new moon (+/- 3 days). The correlation of the energy of the ions with the solar wind speed and the interplanetary magnetic field orientation indicates the relation to the pick-up process. We conclude that the source of these pick-up ions is the moon. We argue that due to the impinging solar wind, atoms are sputtered off the lunar surface, ionized in the sputtering process or by ensuing photoionization and picked up by the solar wind.

    Description: An updated map is presented which shows the distribution of more than 200 channels and valleys on Venus. A large number of channels are concentrated in equatorial regions characterized by highlands, rift and fracture zones, an associated volcanic features. Many channels associated with flow deposits are similar to typical terrestrial lava drainage channels. They are associated with a wide range of volcanic edifices. More than half of the sinuous rilles are associated with coronae, coronalike features, or arachnoids. Corona volcanism driven by mantle plume events may explain this association. Many valley network are observed in highlands and in association with coronae, coronalike features, or arachnoids. This indicates that highlands and coronae provided fractures and flow-viscosity lavas, both of which seem to be required for network formation by lava sapping processes. Canali-type channels have a unique distribution limited to some plains regions.

    Description: Observations of Charon transits are used here to derive preliminary maps of Pluto's sub-Charon hemisphere. Three models are used to describe the brightness of Pluto's surface as functions of latitude and longitude. Mapping results are presented using spherical harmonic functions, polynomial functions, and finite elements. A smoothing algorithm applied to the maps is described and the validity and resolution of the maps is tested by reconstruction from synthetic data. A preliminary finding from the maps is that the south polar region has the highest albedo of any location on the planet.

    Description: Laboratory data on the line broadening parameters of H2S gas under Uranian/Neptunian conditions, on the far wings of the H2S and NH3 line profiles, and on the dielectric properties of CH4-, NH3-, H2S-, and NH4SH-ice are needed to constrain elemental abundances and understand the dynamics and cloud physics in the atmospheres of the giant planets. Measurements of the absorption coefficient of gaseous H2SO4 at millimeter wavelengths are needed in order to obtain a better understanding of Venus' atmosphere. To determine wind velocity fields in Venus' and Mars' atmospheres, accurate measurements of the center frequencies of the CO lines are necessary. The absorption and scattering properties of lunar soils and/or terrestrial rock powders at frequencies from approximately 1 to 200 GHz, determined in laboratory experiments, would provide a valuable addition to existing data at 450 MHz, 35 GHz, and far infrared frequencies. These data would be used to analyze the microwave spectra of planetary surfaces. Such studies may be helpful in distinguishing the effects of radiative transfer from those of nonlinear heat conduction and internal heat sources.

    Description: Laboratory gas-phase photoabsorption cross sections of the CO Cameron 0-0 band and the underlying pseudocontinuum have been measured at a temperature of 147 K and pressures of about 200 mbar, conditions similar to ambient in various planetary and satellite stratospheres in the solar system. A theoretical modeling program has also been used to calculate the band's spectrum. Agreement between the theoretical and the experimental spectra is very good. Models suggest that the observations of the CO Cameron band using the Hubble Space Telescope will be straightforward for Mars, but marginal for Titan.

    Description: The thermal effects of giant impacts are studied by estimating the melt volume generated by the initial shock wave and corresponding magma ocean depths. Additionally, the effects of the planet's initial temperature on the generated melt volume are examined. The shock pressure required to completely melt the material is determined using the Hugoniot curve plotted in pressure-entropy space. Once the melting pressure is known, an impact melting model is used to estimate the radial distance melting occurred from the impact site. The melt region's geometry then determines the associated melt volume. The model is also used to estimate the partial melt volume. Magma ocean depths resulting from both excavated and retained melt are calculated, and the melt fraction not excavated during the formation of the crater is estimated. The fraction of a planet melted by the initial shock wave is also estimated using the model.

    Description: The propagation of electromagnetic waves parallel to the magnetic field in the nightside Venus ionosphere is presented in a theoretical and numerical analysis. The model assumes a source of electromagnetic radiation in the Venus atmosphere, such as that produced by lightning. Specifically addressed is wave propagation in the altitude range z = 130-160 km at the four frequencies detectable by the Pioneer Venus Orbiter Electric Field Detector: 100 Hz, 730 Hz, 5.4 kHz, and 30 kHz. Parameterizations of the wave intensities, peak electron density, and Poynting flux as a function of magnetic field are presented. The waves are found to propagate most easily in conditions of low electron density and high magnetic field. The results of the model are consistent with observational data.

    Description: One interpretation of the Magellan data suggests that the cratering record on Venus was erased by a global resurfacing event, or events, the latest ending about 500 m.y. ago. In this global-resurfacing model the resurfacing was followed by minor volcanism and tectonism that has been concentrated primarily in the equatorial highland regions characterized by extensive fracture belts and rifts. A thermal evolution model of Venus that can explain these observations is one in which a deformable lithosphere, capable of being incorporated in mantle circulations, provides an almost stress-free condition at the surface. Mantle convection with an almost stress-free boundary at the surface cools the interior more efficiently. Rapid cooling decreases the Rayleigh number of mantle convection below a transition value required for oscillatory convection, and the vigor of convection diminishes as the mantle changes to a quasi-steady circulation after about 500 m.y. ago.

    Description: Aspects of the time-variable nature of the Jovian atmosphere are addressed using high-resolution photometrically calibrated multicolored imaging data obtained over two Jovian apparitions. During the period of observations, Jupiter's South Equatorial Belts (SEB) underwent a drastic brightening and its Equatorial Zone gradually darkened throughout the period. Based on the data, vertically inhomogeneous atmospheric structure models are constructed and used to make direct quantitative comparisons between different latitudinal regions and different epochs. The drastic brightening of the SEB is explained by an increase in both the optical thickness and the single-scattering albedo of the upper tropospheric cloud.

    Description: The present analysis of the ureilite meteorites suggests that these are formed by well-understood processes, as indicated by such findings as their being partial melt residues rather than cumulates and their forming in a large chondritic body with heterogeneous O isotopic composition. Slow diffusion of the O in solid and molten silicates ensured that partial melting did not homogenize the O isotopes of the residues. These and other determinations furnish a plausible origin for ureilites as residues from the partial melting of isotopically heterogeneous chondritic material.

    Description: The paper uses models of magnetic convection and interparticle interactions to examine the collisional interactions between atmospheric neutral hydrogen and magnetospheric charged particles observed by Voyager to be convecting through the Uranian magnetosphere. The e(-)-H collisional ionization process, continually reenergized by compressional heating of the electrons as they drift toward Uranus, produces a cascade of new plasma. This process has been suggested elsewhere as the source of the warm (10 eV at L = 5) plasma and is found in the present study to continue in a cascade to even cooler and more abundant plasma. This newly created plasma consists almost entirely of electrons and protons because He and H2 are nearly absent from the uppermost layers of the atmosphere. If this plasma crosses the dayside magnetopause and mixes with magnetopause boundary layers such as the plasma mantle, there to be swept back along the magnetotail, reincorporated into the magnetotail by the same processes postulated for solar wind plasma entry, and reenergized in the magnetotail current sheet, it would constitute an important source for the hot plasma observed by Voyager.

    Description: Attention is given to a characterization of the physical behavior of the Martian upper surface in its first few decimeters on the basis of mutual relationships between three parameters: the linear polarization of the reflected light, the visual albedo, and the thermal inertia. Polarimetric scans raked a strip covering two contrasting regions, the dark-hued Mare Erythraeum, and the light-hued Thaumasia. Erythraeum is characterized everywhere by a uniform polarization response, despite the large geomorphological diversity of the surface. A ubiquitous coating or mantling with small dark grains of albedo 12.7 percent, with a radius of 10 to 20 microns, is indicated. Thaumasia exhibits a large variety of soil properties. A typical location with albedo of 16.3 percent has a surface covered with orange grains, probably very dispersed in size, for which the largest grains are 20 to 40 microns.

    Description: The study characterizes Syrtis Major, an old, low relief volcanic plateau near the equatorial regions of Mars, on the basis of ISM data in order to characterize the spectral properties of the surface, to identify the major mafic mineralogy of the volcanic materials, and to derive estimates of the chemistry of these minerals. The value and spatial distribution of four primary spectral variables (albedo, continuum slope, wavelength of the ferric-ferrous band minimum, and area of the ferric-ferrous absorption) are mapped and coregistered to Viking digital photomosaics. It is shown that although there is a high degree of overall spectral variability on the plateau, the key indicators of mafic mineralogy are relatively homogeneous.

    Description: Six palagonitic soil samples (PH-1 through PH-6) which were collected at 30-cm intervals from a lava slab on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, are studied. The samples present an alteration sequence caused by heating during emplacement of molten lava over a preexisting tephra cone. Techniques employed include visible and near-IUR spectroscopy, Moessbauer spectroscopy, and magnetic analysis. The four samples closest to the slab (PH-1 through PH-4) were strongly altered in response to heating during its emplacement; their iron oxide mineralogy is dominated by nanophase ferric oxide. The sample adjacent to the slab (PH-1) has a factor of 3 less H2O and contains crystalline hematite and magnetite in addition to nanophase ferric oxide. It is argued that localized thermal alteration events may provide a volumetrically important mechanism for the palagonitization of basaltic glass and the production of crystalline ferric oxides on Mars.

    Description: Oxygen ion production rates above the ionopauses of Venus and Mars are calculated for photoionization, charge exchange, and solar wind electron impact ionization processes. The latter two require the use of the Spreiter and Stahara (1980) gas dynamic model to estimate magnetosheath velocities, densities, and temperatures. The results indicate that impact ionization is the dominant mechanism for the production of O(+) ions at both Venus and Mars. This finding might explain both the high ion escape rates measured by Phobos 2 and the greater mass loading rate inferred for Venus from the bow shock positions.

    Description: The Mars thermospheric general circulation model (MTGCM) is modified to examine the impact of a prescribed semidiurnal tidal wave upon Martian thermospheric fields corresponding to near solar minimum (Mariner 9) and solar maximum (Mariner 6-7) observational periods. The effects of upward propagating tides are introduced into the Mars Thermospheric General circulation Model (MTGCM) by appropriately specifying its lower boundary condition according to classical tidal theory. Estimates of the amplitude and phase of the likely dominant semidiurnal (2,2) mode at the mesopause (about 100 km) are specified for a range of possible lower atmosphere dust conditions. MTGCM simulations contrasting tidally driven fields with solar-only forced ones exhibit a dramatic change in the horizontal and vertical wind patterns, whereby the global temperature and oxygen distributions are also modified significantly.

    Description: A comprehensive list of dust storm activity on Mars has been compiled from various published lists and additional data. For uniformity and clarity, each event is classified using a new system that includes a well-defined nomenclature. Maps showing the reported locations of events have been compiled. Detailed commentaries describe the events and/or circumstances of their observation. The seasonal distribution of Martian dust events is diagrammed and discussed together with a seasonal and annual (Mars years) timeline that includes the frequency of photographic coverage. Regional dust storms tend to occur most frequently, and all planet-encircling dust storms have been observed during the southern spring and summer seasons, although there is significant interannual variability.

    Description: A zonally symmetric primitive-equation grid-point model of the Martian atmosphere is coupled with an aerosol transport/microphysical model in order to numerically investigate the size-dependent transport of dust particles in the Martian atmosphere. The coupled model accounts for diabatic heating due to a radiatively active evolving dust field, but neglects feedbacks between atmosphere-surface interactions and surface dust lifting. The differing suspension lifetimes of dust particles of various sizes (radius = 1-80 microns), in conjunction with spatially varying atmospheric dynamics, result in latitudinal differences in several measurements of the column integrated particle concentration. This work indicates the importance of considering the full range of particle sizes (and shapes) of the suspended dust during Martian global dust storms and their impact upon the spatial extent and wavelength-dependent radiative influence of such storms.

    Description: The characteristics of the zonal-mean circulation and how it responds to seasonal variations and dust loading are described. This circulation is the main momentum-containing component of the general circulation, and it plays a dominant role in the budgets of heat and momentum. It is shown that in many ways the zonal-mean circulation on Mars, at least as simulated by the model, is similar to that on earth, having Hadley and Ferrel cells and high-altitude jet streams. However, the Martian systems tend to be deeper, more intense, and much more variable with season. Furthermore, the radiative effects of suspended dust particles, even in small amounts, have a major influence on the general circulation.

    Description: A recent review of earth-based telescopic observations of Mars together with Viking orbiter and lander data are employed to estimate the frequency of occurrence of planet-encircling dust storms over the past century and to test whether the period spanned by the Mariner 9 and Viking missions to Mars is representative of the decades prior to 1950. Both spacecraft and earth-based observations suggest that planet-encircling dust storms on Mars occur during a 'dust storm season' in southern spring and summer. Viking data show that planet-encircling dust storms could have occurred in the past on Mars without being detected from earth during years in which Mars was far from earth during the dust storm season. Planet-encircling storms were absent during the dust storm seasons monitored during several favorable oppositions prior to 1956 and after 1986. The change of a planet-encircling dust storm occurring in any arbitrary Mars year is estimated to be approximately one in three, if this occurrence is random from year to year and yet restricted seasonally to southern spring and summer.

    Description: The theory of the lower-hybrid-drift instability is compared with observations of plasma density irregularities. Marginal stability boundaries (gamma = 0) for the lower-hybrid-drift instability and the occurrence of small-scale density fluctuations are presented as a function of magnetic field B and density n. For plasma density gradient scale lengths in the range 2-10 km, 80-85 percent of the density fluctuations lie in the unstable B/n parameter regime (gamma greater than 0). Stability boundaries for the onset of instability at a wavelength for which the Pioneer Venus Orbiter could measure a Doppler-shifted frequency of 100 Hz are presented. The conditions on B and n for instability in this situation are more stringent than those for marginal stability, especially at low densities (n less than or equal to 5000/cu cm). In general, the instability is most likely to be active in regions of low beta: high magnetic field strength and low density, as found in ionospheric holes or troughs.

    Description: The orbital properties of near-earth object 2201 have been associated with meteor showers, and its modeled orbital evolution is chaotic - a property which might indicate a history related to comets. Telescopic observations of its visible and near-infrared spectral reflectance, broad-band visible and near-infrared photometry, infrared radiometric measurements, and radar echoes are reported here from two apparitions, 1979 and 1983. This asteroid has a high radiometric albedo, a property not associated with comet nuclei. In certain wavelength regimes it is classified as an S-type asteroid, in others, an E-type, but its overall spectral reflectance is not typical of either taxonomic type, and neither type is thought of as cometlike. Unexpectedly high ultraviolet reflectance at the 1979 apparition was suggested to be the result of residual outgassing as in a comet. The UV photometric data are modeled as fluorescent emission from neutral species found in comets. The resulting calculations indicate a plausible value for OH and CN emission at 0.3085 and 0.38 micron relative to the observed range of active comets.

    Description: The detection of H3(+) in Uranus is reported. Using the CGS4 spectrometer on the UKIRT telescope, we clearly detected 11 emission features of the H3(+) fundamental vibration-rotation band between 3.89 and 4.09 microns. These features are composed primarily of lines from the Q-branch; the strongest of them is the Q(3) blend at 3.985 microns. Analysis of these features indicates a rotational temperature of 740 +/- 25 K, an ortho-H3(+) fraction of 0.51 +/- 0.03, and a disk-averaged H3(+) column abundance of 6.5 x 10 exp 10 (+/- 10 percent) molecules/sq cm. Comparison is made with Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune. A detection of the H2 1-0 S(1) line in Uranus and an upper limit to H3(+) emission from Neptune also are reported. The rate of energy deposition into Uranus appears to be significantly higher than the rate reported during the Voyager 2 flyby in January of 1986.

    Description: Observations are presented which show that CO is present in both the troposphere and stratosphere of Neptune, whereas is confined to the Neptune stratosphere with a mean mole fraction in the 0.003-30 mbar pressure level range of 1.0 x 10 exp -9. CO is present in both the stratosphere and in the troposphere with a uniformly mixed model fraction of 1.2 x 10 exp -6. Upper limits of 1.0 x 10 exp -10 and 3.0 x 10 exp -8 mole fractions are derived for HCN and CO respectively on Uranus. The origin of these species in the atmosphere of Neptune and their nondetection in that of Uranus are discussed in detail. It is concluded that the most plausible scenario involves upward convection of CO and N2 from Neptune's deep interior and a failure of chemical equilibrium at deep atmospheric levels, allowing excess CO and presumably N2 to reach the upper atmosphere. Nondetection in Uranus may be explained by the lack of a significant internal heat source in the planet and consequent suppression of vertical convection.

    Description: It is shown that aerosols generated at low temperatures and high condensation rate spontaneously form in a highly crystalline state. The resonant absorption bands in the IR spectra of these highly crystalline particles are much sharper than any reported previously in the bulk, and reveal details in the N-H vibrational bands that have not been previously observed. A disordered phase is also observed at somewhat higher temperatures. These results are consistent with this being a supercooled liquid. The fact that the spectra associated with these two aerosol phases are quite different is important to any future attempts at detecting hydrazine aerosols in planetary atmospheres by remote sensing techniques.

    Description: We examined the distribution of surface slopes of a variety of terrestrial surfaces by field measurement, representing surfaces formed by a wide range of processes, and compared the results to planetary radar data. Slope distributions of the measured surfaces differed considerably from the distributions assumed by accepted models of radar scattering. We also used Hagfors' model of radar scattering to predict the return that would be expected from surfaces where two discrete surface types were present within the radar field of view and found that the shapes of the resulting slope distributions differed from those predicted by the Hagfors model for homogeneous surfaces. Together, these results suggest that current methods of determining surface roughness from radar may significantly underestimate the roughness of planetary surfaces and that the derived rms slope can best be used as a qualitative guide to the physical interpretation of actual surface properties.

    Description: Planar impact experiments were employed to induce dynamic tensile failure in Bedford limestone. Rock disks were impacted with aluminum and polymethyl methacralate flyer plates at velocities of 10 to 25 m/s. This resulted in tensile stresses in the range of 11 to 160 MPa. Tensile stress durations of 0.5 and 1.3 microsec induced microcrack growth which in many experiments were insufficient to cause complete spalling of the samples. Velocity reduction, and by inference microcrack production, occurred in samples subjected to stresses above 35 MPa in the 1.3-microsec PMMA experiments and 60 MPa in the 0.5-microsec aluminum experiments. Apparent fracture toughnesses of 2.4 and 2.5 MPa m exp 1/2 are computed for the 1.3- and 0.5-microsec experiments. Three-dimensional impact experiments were conducted on 20 cm-sized blocks of Bedford limestone and San Marcos gabbro. Compressional wave velocity deficits up to 50-60 percent were observed in the vicinity of the crater. The damage decreases as about r exp -1.5 from the crater, indicating a dependence on the magnitude and duration of the tensile pulse.

    Description: We calculate low-degree l acoustic (p-mode) oscillations of the giant planet Jupiter. We use two Jupiter models, both of which contain a rocky core, an ice mantle, and a hydrogen-rich envelope. One of the models incorporates the 'plasma phase transition' of hydrogen, a first-order phase transition that yields a density discontinuity in the hydrogen-rich envelope. Our calculations of the acoustic oscillation spectrum of Jupiter have taken account of the effects of the rapid rotation of the planet: the Coriolis force, centrifugal force, and deformation of the equilibrium state. The p-mode frequency spectra of the Jupiter models are summarized in several echelle diagrams. We show that the frequency spectra of the low-degree p-modes are strongly affected by the existence of the rocky core and by avoided crossings among high radial-order p-modes with different l's.

    Description: The volatile contents of a number of enstatite chondrite falls of different chemical groups (EH; EL) and petrologic types (EH3-5; EL6) were investigated in order to find evidence of explosive pyroclastic volcanism, supporting the mechanism proposed by Wilson and Keil (1991) to explain the lack of aubritic basalts in aubrites. It is shown that abundant volatiles are likely to have been released upon partial melting of enstatite chondritelike precursor materials of aubrites, enough to drive pyroclastic volcanic eruptions which would explain the lack of aubritic basalts.

    Description: Energy transfer between electrons and methane gas by collisional processes plays an important role in the thermal balance of electrons in the atmospheres and ionospheres of planets and satellites in the outer solar system. The literature is reviewed for electron impact cross-sections for methane in this paper. Energy transfer rates are calculated for elastic and inelastic processes using a Maxwellian electron distribution. Vibrational, rotational, and electronic excitation and ionization are included. Results are presented for a wide range of electron temperatures and neutral temperatures.

    Description: The idea of an early greenhouse atmosphere for Triton is presented and the conditions under which it may have been sustained are quantified. The volatile content of primordial Triton is modeled, and tidal heating rates are assessed to set bounds on the available energy. The atmospheric model formalism is presented, and it is shown how a massive atmosphere could have been raised by modest tidal heating fluxes. The implications of the model atmospheres for the atmospheric escape rates, the chemical evolution, and the cratering record are addressed.

    Description: An axisymmetric finite element model is constructed to calculate elastic stresses in a volcanic edifice to examine the relationship between surface tectonism, caldera subsidence, and the physical characteristics of Olympus Mons' magmatic reservoir. Model results indicate that the surface stress state is not strongly sensitive to the aspect ratio or pressure distribution of the magma chamber, or to the contrast in stiffness between the magma chamber and surroundings, but is strongly dependent on the depth and width of the chamber. A gross similarity is suggested between the configurations of the magmatic plumbing systems of Olympus Mons and several well-studied terrestrial volcanoes such as the Hawaiian shields.

    Description: Homologous series of alkyl phosphonic acids and alkyl sulfonic acids, along with inorganic orthophosphate and sulfate, are identified in water extracts of the Murchison meteorite after conversion to their t-butyl dimethylsilyl derivatives. The methyl, ethyl, propyl, and butyl compounds are observed in both series. Five of the eight possible alkyl phosphonic acids and seven of the eight possible alkyl sulfonic acids through C4 are identified. Abundances decrease with increasing carbon number as observed of other homologous series indigenous to Murchison. Concentrations range downward from approximately 380 nmol/gram in the alkyl sulfonic acid series, and from 9 nmol/gram in the alkyl phosphonic acid series.

    Description: Calculations of solar wind-induced loss rates for evolving solar and atmospheric conditions like those described by Zhang et al. (1992), but including sputtering of the Martian atmosphere by reentering O(+) pickup ions, are described. The inclusion of the sputter loss increases by about 30 percent the cumulative estimated loss of oxygen to that in about 50 m of water (global surface depth) over the last 3.5 billion years. These ions also sputter CO2 and its fragments in substantial amounts. That integrated loss is equivalent to about 0.14 bar atmospheric CO2 pressure, of the order of some estimates of Mars' early atmospheric inventory.

    Description: The monocarboxylic acids and hydrocarbons of the Murchison meteorite (CM2) were isolated for isotropic analysis. The nonvolatile hydrocarbons were analyzed as crude methanol and benzene-methanol extracts and also after separation by silica gel chromatography into predominantly aliphatic, aromatic, and polar hydrocarbon fractions. The volatile hydrocarbons were obtained after progressive decomposition of the meteorite matrix by freeze-thaw, hot water, and acid treatment. Molecular analyses of the aromatic hydrocarbons showed them to comprise a complex suite of compounds in which pyrene, fluoranthene, phenanthrene, and acenaphthene were the most abundant components, a result similar to earlier analyses. The polar hydrocarbons also comprise a very complex mixture in which aromatic ketones, nitrogen, and sulfur heterocycles were identified. The monocarboxylic acids, aliphatic, aromatic, and polar hydrocarbons, and the indigenous volatile hydrocarbons were found to be D-rich. The deuterium enrichment observed in these compounds is suggestive. In two separate analyses, the delta-D values of the nonvolatile hydrocarbons were observed to increase in the following order: aliphatic-aromatic-polar. This finding is consistent with an early solar system or parent body conversion of aromatic to aliphatic compounds as well as the suggestion of pyrolytic formation of aromatic from aliphatic compounds.

    Description: System III variations in apparent distance of the Io plasma torus from Jupiter are examined on the basis of data obtained from UVS scans across Jupiter's satellite system. The displacement of the dawn and dusk ansae are found to be unexpectedly complex. The displacements are unequal and both ansae are in motion with the motion of the approaching ansa being the lesser of the two. The radial motions, as measured from either the center of Jupiter or the offset-tilted dipole, are of unequal magnitude and have the System III periodicity. It is concluded that the cross-tail electric field that causes these torus motions is concentrated on the dusk ansa, varied with the System III period, and shows magnetic-anomaly phase control. It is found that the dawn-dust asymmetry in brightness is not explained simply by the cross-tail electric field. It is concluded that there is a heating mechanism that causes the dusk side of the Io plasma torus to be brighter than the dawn side.

    Description: A model is used to investigate how particle-particle collisions might modify some consequences of satellite perturbations relevant to short-term features of narrow planetary rings. A Monte Carlo-like simulation ring-model particle velocity alteration allows the simulation of collisions while individual particles are tracked. Periodic features visible in Voyager images are reproduced in a 2D numerical model which incorporates the collisional simulation as well as the perturbations of adjacent satellites. Collisions are noted to wash out periodic features within one collisional relaxation time.

    Description: Least-squares fits to the two available limb profiles of Proteus yield a sphericity close to unity; the visual irregularity is due to a degree of surface roughness comparable to that of Hyperion and the smaller icy satellites. A network of streaks that can be interpreted as tectonic troughs cuts the surface of Proteus, and is organized concentrically around either one of the two nearly-coincident Proteus-Neptune of Pharos axes of symmetry. If the streaks are tectonic, they may be due to tidal stresses generated by a past change in Proteus' equilibrium orientation. The streaks may also be disruptive-stress fractures.

    Description: Ion phase densities of Neptune are presently ascertained at the first and second adiabatic invariants of charged-particle motion on the basis of an analysis of Voyager 2 measurements. The profiles thus obtained are interpreted as indicative of generally inward radial diffusion, with an energetic ion source near L = 10. Excellent agreement is obtained between inbound and outbound phase-space density profiles at the values of the invariants; this suggests approximately axisymmetric, quasi-stationary radiation belts. The inward diffusing power carried by energetic ions appears adequate for powering Neptune's aurora, if enough of the ions are lost to the Neptune atmosphere.

    Description: The dynamical history of Neptune's satellite system is presently inferred on the basis of a Triton capture-origin scenario in which that moon's elongated postcapture orbit generated chaotic perturbations of the original satellites' eccentricities; this, in turn, led to mutual collisions among the inner satellites until a ring of debris was formed. Neptune's inner satellite system thereby reformed on equatorial orbits after the orbtal circularization of Triton. Attention is given to the 4.7-deg inclination of 1989N6, which may be due to a temporary inclination-resonance capture.

    Description: Visual photometry and methane-band imaging indicate that Neptune underwent a period of atmospheric activity in the 1986-1989 period with an enhancement of 8900 A CH4-band brightness and an increased standard deviation of the mean yearly magnitudes at visual and near-IR wavelengths. These observations are presently interpreted as due to a localized upwelling source that could be similar to the 'great white spots' that have been periodically observed on Saturn.

    Description: It is presently shown that the ratio of ethane emission to methane emission in Neptune's 7-14 micron spectrum increased by a factor of 1.47 +/- 0.11 in the period between 1985 and 1991, and that the 12.2-micron ethan feature (rather than that of methane at 7.7 microns) is implicated in the greater part of that change. It is speculated that this variation is due either to a nonuniform increase in stratospheric temperature, or (more likely) to an increase in the ethane concentration by over 15 percent.

    Description: Results are presented from a detailed analysis of Voyager images of Triton obtained at the highest solar phase angles; these have been fit to Mie scattering models in order to obtain the mean particle sizes, number densities, and the vertical extent of the two different scattering components of the Triton atmosphere. The 0.001-0.01 optical depths of about 0.17 micron particles are vertically distributed with scale heights of about 10 km throughout Triton. A number of properties of the haze particles in question suggest that they are composed of photochemically produced gases which have condensed in the cold lower atmosphere of Triton.

    Description: The present theoretical analysis of particle formation mechanisms at conditions relevant to the troposphere and stratosphere of Neptune indicates that the hydrocarbon-nucleation process in the lower stratosphere is very inefficient, because saturation ratios much greater than unity are required in the cases of aerosol formation by homogeneous, heterogeneous, and ion-induced nucleation. The latter two of these, however, should be possible on Neptune for most of the complex hydrocarbon species in question. The relative effectiveness of heterogeneous and ion-induced nucleation depends on the physical and thermodynamic properties of the species in question, condensable-species abundance, supersaturation temperatures, and the number and type of available condensation ions or nuclei.

    Description: A model encompassing the turbulent transfer of sensible heat as well as insolation, reradiation, and latent heat transport is presently used to investigate the energetics of the surface-atmosphere system of Triton. Under the assumption of a physically plausible range of heat transfer coefficients, the atmospheric temperature 1 km above the surface is found to be 1-3 K hotter than the Triton surface. The observed N2 frosts must have an emissivity lower than unity in order to match a frost temperature at the surface of about 38 K.

    Description: The Small Main-Belt Asteroid Lightcurve Survey is the first to measure main-belt asteroid lightcurve properties for bodies with diameters smaller than 5 km. Attention is given to CCD lightcurves for 32 small main-belt asteroids. The objects of this sample have a mean rotational frequency which is faster than that of larger main-belt asteroids. All lightcurves were investigated for nonperiodic variations ascribable to free precession; no conclusive detection of this phenomenon has been made, however.

    Description: Simulations of collisions are conducted between a model of the primitive Uranus and 1-3 earth-mass impactors, using smooth-particle hydrodynamics. A series of collisions was simulated for each impactor while varying the total angular momentum of the system. Most of the simulation runs left ices in orbit; a subset of the runs also left rock or iron (from the impactor). It is concluded on the basis of these results that there is a wide range of giant impacts which could have produced the current period and inclination of the spin axis relative to the plane of the ecliptic. A subset of these could have deposited the material in orbit from which the regular satellites of Uranus were assembled.

    Description: A photometric analysis of Voyager 2 images of a broad, 'anomalous scattering region' (ASR) on Triton shows its material to differ from the average Triton regolith in being only weakly backward scattering at all Voyager 2 camera wavelengths; the ASR also displays distinctive phase-dependent green/violet color ratios and clear-filter albedo. These characteristics are used to map the global distribution of the ASR areas for which photometric coverage is incomplete. The ASR may form an almost continuous band of material that runs parallel to the Triton equator, characterized by the presence of a transparent and optically thin, seasonally-controlled veneer of well-annealed solid N2.

    Description: The backscattering phase function asssociated with bright icy satellites may render Hapke's (1986) isotropic approximation to multiple scattering inadequate. A reanalysis is accordingly conducted here of the Voyager observations of Mimas, using a modification to Hapke's equation that accommodates anisotropic multiple scattering, in order to characterize the physical and photometric properties of the heavily cratered icy surface. The roughness parameter of Mimas is in this way redefined, and an accurate albedo map is obtained which deminstrates small latitudinal and longitudinal albedo variations.

    Description: The photometric textures of Europa geologic units possessing the same small mean photometric slope angle as found by Dominique et al. (1991) are presently examined on the basis of Hapke's (1981) photometric model. With only one exception, the particles composing the surfaces of most of the units exhibit similar scattering properties. Attention is given to the single-particle scattering functions of the two bright plains regions examined; these are noted to be no less different from each other than both are from the other units.     Description: The paper compares Arecibo Observatory and Magellan radar data for Venus to airborne radar images for potential terrestrial analog surfaces. Volcanic deposits in western Eistla Regio and northern Sedna Planitia are characterized. It is shown that the expected-sense circularly polarized echoes in the 'dark plains' and broad flow aprons of Eistla Regio decrease rapidly with incidence angle. This angular scattering behavior implies surfaces no rougher than terrestrial pahoehoe flows. Polarization ratio comparisons show that the extensive lava flows in Western Eistla Regio and Sedna Planitia are generally consistent with the properties of terrestrial pahoehoe flows, with only limited occurrences of a'a morphology. Three scenarios are suggested. Many of the large flow units in the two study regions were emplaced as complexes of low-effusion rate pahoehoe flows, rather than as higher eruption rate events which might be expected to produce a'a surface textures; the long lava flows were originally emplaced as a'a but have since weathered to a smoother texture; or a combination of atmospheric and magma compositional effects combine to inhibit a'a formation even at high volume eruption rates.

    Description: Results of a study of the western and central portions of the Venusian hot spot Eistla Regio are presented. Magellan radar images were mapped to elucidate the general geologic history of the region. Radial fracture systems both on the rises and volcanoes indicate that uplift and associated faulting accompanied volcanic construction. Prominent fracture zones strike WNW to NW, parallel to the long axis of the highlands. The largest of these, Guor Linea, exhibits a progressive deformation history that may include minor clockwise rotation in addition to bulk NNE-SSW extension. Pioneer Venus line-of-sight accelerations were inverted for vertical gravity which, when combined with topography, were used to solve for mass anomalies on the crust-mantle boundary and in the upper levels of the mantle convective system.

    Description: The hydrodynamic evolution of an incompressible plane mixing layer is addressed to elucidate scalar mixing in free shear flows. A detailed description of the onset of three-dimensionality in a mixing layer before or in the absence of pairing is presented. Various simulations were performed to investigate the sensitivity of these results to variations in initial conditions. These variations included changes in amplitude, wavelength, functional form, and relative phasing of the initial low-wavenumber disturbances. Pierrehumber & Widnall's (1982) translative instability eigenfunctions are found to include rib vortices in the braid region and oppositely signed streamwise vorticity in the roller core. The translative instability is an instability of the late-time oversaturated flow. Three-dimensional perturbation growth similar to that of the translative instability can occur whenever spanwise vorticity is present in the braid region. The nonlinear effects that occur when the initial rib circulation is sufficiently high are discussed.

    Description: The paper develops a geophysical model for Venus that allows separation of topography supported by shallow density anomalies, e.g., crustal thickening, from that interpreted to be caused by mantle convection, and produces estimates of the planforms of lithospheric density anomalies and the mantle convection pattern. The topography caused by these two planforms is compared to several global data sets compiled from analysis of Magellan data. The mantle convection pattern agrees qualitatively with numerical simulations by Bercovici et al. (1989) and shows isolated upwellings amidst a network of downwellings. Crustal thickening does not exhibit a similar pattern. Impact crater density is nearly uniform and does not correlate with either crustal thickening or the mantle convection patterns. Large volcanic structures exhibit a good but imperfect correlation with mantle upwellings. Coronae locations are anticorrelated with large upwellings and large downwellings. A scenario is proposed for global tectonics on Venus and its relationship to mantle convection.

    Description: Asteroids 387 Aquitania and 980 Anacostia are anomalous members of the S-class. Their reflectance spectra exhibit a strong broad absorption feature longwards of 1.5 micron and no significant feature near 1 micron. Their spectra indicate the presence of spinel, an aluminum-magnesium oxide mineral commonly present in inclusions in CV3 and CO3 meteorites. Spinel probably makes up only a small percentage of the surface assemblages of these asteroids, but its spectral effect may be enhanced by its presence in fine-grained white inclusions in immature asteroid regoliths. It is speculated that Aquitania and Anacostia represent material formed in the same nebular zone as the CV3 and CO3 chondrites but either: (A) at an earlier time in the nebula when such inclusions might have been a relatively larger fraction of the nebular grain population; or (B) in local regions where nebular processes (e.g., settling to the midplane) had concentrated such inclusions. The close similarity of two orbital elements (a, i) suggests that Aquitania and Anacostia may be members of a partially dispersed asteroid family produced by the early disruption of a spinel-bearing parent body.
