Notizen: Mathematical modelling of the ascent of free fluid through relatively strong rock, deep in the Earth's mantle, presents a challenge in geomechanics. Here the medium is considered as fluid-saturated, porous, elastic and bounded, and the fluid enters at a point source. An explicit finite difference method is developed for the numerical solution to the problem of the dilatation of a fluid-saturated porous elastic sphere due to a point fluid source of constant strength at the centre of the sphere. A cubic spline interpolant is used to evaluate a definite integral which occurs in the boundary condition for the pore fluid pressure at the surface of the sphere. The numerical solutions for the dilatation and pore fluid pressure are compared with analytical solutions and the absolute and relative errors of the numerical solutions are calculated. When the fluid source is switched on, the pore fluid pressure starts to decrease, reaches a minimum value and then steadily increases. The initial time rate of decrease of the pore fluid pressure is independent of the radial distance from the source. It decreases as the radius of the sphere increases and vanishes for a point fluid source in an infinite porous elastic medium.

Notizen: An equivalent homogeneous continuum theory is developed for modelling discretely drained soil stratum. The model accounts for the local horizontal flow to discrete vertical drains such as wick or sand or stone columns as well as direct vertical drainage of the soil and global horizontal flow due to non-uniform horizontal conditions. Calibration curves for the model are presented for the case of no soil smear due to the drain installation and for the case when smear exists. The model is implemented in both analytical and finite element analyses for those cases where no well resistance is present and when it is of importance. The accuracy and applicability of the model is demonstrated for simple one- and two- layered problems including smear and well resistance.

Notizen: A dual-porosity model based on the modified formulation by Barenblatt et al. has been presented for the simulation of naturally fractured reservoirs. It is shown that neglecting terms in the flow governing equations may not be justified for some particular physical circumstances. The analytical solution of the proposed dual-porosity model for a finite naturally fractured reservoir subjected to a constant outer boundary pressure is obtained using the Hankel transform technique while taking into account the transient flow in the matrix blocks. Both solution accuracy and efficiency are achieved utilizing an optimized algorithm when solving the inherent Bessel functions. This research indicates that the transient fluid pressure profiles in naturally fractured reservoirs are critically controlled by the permeability ratio between matrix and fractures, and by the compressibilities of fluid, fractures and solid grains. The fluid pressure change is substantially delayed if the permeability ratio becomes increasingly smaller. The dual-porosity behaviour is most obvious when the compressibility of the fractures decreases relative to the increases of compressibility of the solid grains.

Notizen: The paper deals with the analysis of excavations which are very long and can, for all practical purposes, be considered to be infinitely long. Special infinite finite and boundary elements are developed for the modelling of the infinitely long part of such excavations. Test examples are presented which show the accuracy which can be obtained by using these elements. Finally, examples of application in mining and petroleum engineering are shown.

Notizen: Analytical solutions are developed for the prediction of the load-settlement response of a compressible axially loaded cast in situ pile in rock. The principal input parameters are derived from the τ-z curve which applies to the contact zone between the pile shaft and the embedment material. For larger diameter piles in rock, these τ-z curves can differ markedly from curves that apply to piles in clay and may include a significant strain hardening region prior to reaching peak strength. In addition to the complete analyses which would normally require the use of a computer, simplified solutions suitable for hand calculations have been derived for the peak load and the pile head displacement to peak. An example of the application of these simplified design calculations is presented.

Notizen: The problem of fully coupled consolidation and heat flow around a rigid cylindrical heat source buried in clay has been studied. The governing equations of the problem are summarized in the paper and a finite element time-marching scheme to obtain an approximate solution to the governing equations is described. The stress-strain behaviour of the skeleton of the saturated soil has been represented by both a linear elastic model and the modified Cam clay soil model. The results of a limited parametric study are presented with the aim of understanding the major mechanisms of soil behaviour close to buried canisters of hot radioactive waste. A range of soil properties has been included in the study, and the effects of soil disturbance during canister emplacement have also been considered.

Notizen: A numerical method is developed in this paper for the analysis of the behaviour of a raft resting on a consolidating soil. The response of the raft under an applied loading is determined using the finite layer method for the soil and the finite element method for the raft. By considering deflection compatibility on the contact surface, the distribution of contact pressure is computed at various time steps. The settlement and bending moment in the raft is then evaluated by applying the calculated contact pressure back to the raft. It is shown that, in some cases, the maximum moment in the raft occurs during consolidation and that checking the final moment in the raft by use of elastic theory may not be sufficient.

Notizen: In this study, a general mathematical model was developed for land displacements that occur as a result of the pressure decline in confined and/or phreatic aquifers. Two equations were developed by employing the equilibrium (force balance) equation and the flow equation in a deforming aquifer system. Both of these equations were integrated over the thickness of the aquifer system once a regional model had been formulated. The change of the body force in saturated and unsaturated zones of aquifers was considered in the derivation of the equilibrium equation. It was assumed that no external loading or force acting on the aquifer system was present. Two coupled equations expressed in terms of the averaged dilation and pressure were then obtained. The pumping data sets given in the papers of Bear and Corapcioglu1,2 in 1981 and 1983 were analysed. Drawdown and displacements in a confined aquifer were demonstrated to be identical to those estimated by Bear and Corapcioglu.1 In the case of a phreatic aquifer, however, the results estimated by the present approach were slightly different from those obtained by Corapcioglu and Bear.2 The discrepancies in the results are possibly due to errors in the equations presented by Corapcioglu and Bear.2 The present approach was able to avoid several assumptions and complex procedures used by Bear and Corapcioglu,1,2 especially in the case of a phreatic aquifer, by taking into account the change in the body force.

Notizen: The paper describes the basic ideas and the main features of a new class of constitutive laws, in the framework of incrementally non-linear constitutive equations. CLoE is a generic name for that new class of laws, with reference to consistency at the limit surface, and explicit localization analysis. A top-down analysis of the model is presented, and illustrated by examples.

Notizen: The paper presents a solution for calculation of the surface uplift field of a semi-infinite elastic solid embedded with a pressurized elliptical crack oriented at any angle, and at any depth. The results presented are those for a uniform pressure loading on the crack face, simulating a static pressurized hydraulic fracture, but the mathematical technique developed can be extended directly to non-uniform normal loads or general shear loads in the form of a polynomial up to the third order. The result of a special case of the new solution, where the crack is penny shaped and parallel to the free surface, is compared with results from Sun's solution and from experiments which were designed and performed by the authors. The experiments involved pressurization of a penny-shaped crack in a polyurethane material which is linear elastic under low stresses, and measurement of surface deformation by holographic interferometry and Fizeau interferometry. The correspondence between theory and experiment is excellent.

Notizen: The cyclic mobility behaviour of sand by the three-dimensional (3-D) strain space multimechanism model based on the micromechanics of granular material is investigated. The constitutive properties are characterized by the volumetric and shear mechanisms for the initial isotropic soil. The 3-D shear mechanism is decomposed into a number of microscopic plane-strain shear mechanisms in various orientations, each of which in turn consists of a number of microscopic simple shear mechanisms. Using an appropriate summation of mechanisms, the total deformation behaviour can be obtained by evaluating contributions from each mechanism. Based on the some assumptions, the dilatancy model proposed by Iai et al.1 is extended from the two-dimensional (2-D) space to the 3-D space. Comparisons of theoretically predicted results are made with experimental measurements.

Notizen: Methods are presented for analysing earth structures subjected to tensile stresses that may produce cracking. The linear elastic fracture mechanics approach is emphasized. Methods of solution are proposed for cracking of a clay layer above the water table due to desiccation; cracking of layered earth structures subjected to external loads; cracking of clay caps for landfills due to differential settlement; and radial cracking in pressurized boreholes. Causes and mechanisms of cracking are discussed for each problem and models pertinent to each problem are proposed. Solutions have been developed by synthesizing analytical and numerical methods. Published experimental data have been incorporated in modelling matric suction and cracked beams on elastic foundations. Finite element analyses were employed to obtain solutions for cracking due to differential settlement and radial cracking in boreholes. The solutions presented herein can be used to assess the soundness of existing structures or to assess the risk of cracking for the design of new structures.

Notizen: This paper is devoted to the stability analysis of a vertical embankment in reinforced soil, assuming that a very large number of reinforcements are periodically distributed throughout the soil mass. The reinforced soil is modelled as a homogeneous medium that obeys a macroscopic yield condition. Two numerical formulations of the homogenized problem, derived from the lower and upper bound theorems of limit analysis, respectively, with a finite element discretization technique, are described. They both lead to a linear programming problem, which is carried out by means of XPRESS industrial LP code. The practical implementation of both the static and kinematic finite element programs on the case of a vertical reinforced earth wall results in close estimates of its failure height, which are in good agreement with available experimental data. This points to the ability of such programs to provide a rigorous evaluation of the limit loads of structures through the determination of lower bound and upper bound estimates sufficiently close to each other.

Notizen: Some recently developed implicit time discretizations are discussed whose main application is to solving ordinary differential equations arising from finite element approximations to partial differential equations. Their theoretical properties, computer implementation and numerical behaviour, as observed in tests on simple examples, are compared with well-known discretizations such as the Crank-Nicholson method.

Notizen: In this paper a finite element formulation for a linear viscoelastic ageing material is developed. It is shown that these equations can be solved in the from of an eigenvalue expansion thus reducing the problem to the solution of a set of Volterra Integral equations. An alternative method of solution based on expansion in terms of an operator related to Poisson's ratio is also developed and this solution method is found to significantly reduce the computational effort necessary in the solution of aproblem.

Notizen: The stress field and flow characteristics are studied for a cavity with the shape of a prolate spheroid in dome salt with emphasis given to the excavation phase. A semi-empirical creep law is derived from thermodynamic principles and experimental results. In this paper, an elementary non-linear form is used in the kinetic relation. A finite element solution procedure is discussed which incorporates the creep law, excavation sequence, and arbitrary non-homogeneous initial stress field.

Notizen: A tow-dimensional finite difference wave propagation code was used to analyse the impact of a rigid, ogival-nosed penetrator with a target consisting of thin alternating layers of silt, sand, and clay. The response of the idealized target was described with an elastic-plastic constitutive model depending upon two stress invariants and the history of plastic deformation. Interfacial friction between the penetrator and target was assumed to be negligible.Comparisons are made of calculated results and those of nominally similar experiments conducted at the Watching Hill test site in Alberta, Canada. Analysis of these comparisons reveals that numerical methods like the one employed in this study can yield insight into penomena, as well as suggesting possible improvements in the calculation technique.

Notizen: This paper described a technique for obtaining three-dimensional mine design information using a two-dimensional finite element program where the mining geometry consists of an extensive array of underground rooms and pillars. The technique is based upon a simple augmentation of forces in a two-dimensional analysis to produce the same average pillar stress that would occur in a full three dimensional analysis. Detailed comparisons between a three-dimensional analysis, a two-dimensional analysis (plane stress and plane strain) and an augmented two-dimensional analysis (also plane stress and plane strain) of stress about a typical coal mine pillar are presented. A local factor of safety is defined and then mapped over the pillar midplane, the immediate roof and immediate floor using the results from the full three-dimensional analysis. Comparisons of roof and pillar safety factor distributions obtained by the three-dimensional, two-dimensional and augmented two-dimensional analyses show that the minimum safety factors in the pillar (at the pillar sides) are predicted quite closely by the augmented two-dimensional techniqe (plane stress). The same is true of the immediate roof, although the three-dimensional safety factor tends to be higher in the roof (over the room) than that calculated by the augmented twodimensional technique. The augmented loading procedure appears to hold considerable promise as a very efficient and cost reducing techniqe for mine pillar design.

Notizen: The paper presents an analytical study of the consolidation of a semi-infinite clay layer subjected to a shear load distributed over a rectangular area. Biot's theory is made use of, along with the three displacement functions suggested by Verruijt. A complex Fourier and Laplace transformation technique enables the solution to be obtained in terms of non-dimensional parameters. Settlements and pore pressures under the loaded area are evaluated for two types of surface drainage conditions. Extension of the solutions to point loads is also suggested. The Mandel-Cryer effect is seen in the behaviour of the pore pressure.

Notizen: The deflection of, and the pore pressure at, the surface of a saturated clay mass are computed by modelling the mass mathematically as a consolidationg half-space. Specifically, attention is focused on the effect of a surface cover which impedes, though does not entirely prevent, the flow of the pore water. A number of results of interest are reported, generalizing work reported earlier by McNamee and Gibson8.

Notizen: An effective solution procedure for the finite element analysis of free surface seepage problems is presented. The solution algorithm employs a non-linear permeability description of the material and avoids iteration with the finite element mesh. The results and experiences obtained in the analyses of some problems are presented to demonstrate the usefulness of the technique.

Notizen: A simple and analytical method of solving the problem of heat extraction from a penny-shaped crack having both inlet and outlet holes is developed by using a two-dimensional flow model when fluid is injected at a constant flow rate. Temperature distributions in both rock and fluid are obtained by taking into account the hydraulic and thermal growth of the crack. The outlet fluid temperature and energy extraction rate versus time are shown by some illustrative examples. Although the effect of thermal, contraction of rock upon the crack width is large, its influence upon flow rate and crack tip stress intensity factor is sufficiently small within the first several years so that the crack radius can be determined mainly by the mechanical deformation of, the rock.

Notizen: The results obtained from a loading test on a bored, cast-in-place pile instrumented with six pairs of load cells at different levels are compared with the results obtained from a non-linear finite element analysis based on the geotechnical parameters of the cohesive soils in which the pile was bored.Settlements computed using deformability parameters obtained by a standard laboratory test were much larger than the measured settlements. Satisfactory results are instead obtained assuming Ei=1000cu and cα=cu.The distribution of the vertical stresses within the pile and of the shear stresses in the soil adjacent to the pile obtained by the numerical analysis are compared with the measured values.A fair agreement is found at loads below failure but differences between experimental and computed values are found at loads close to failure.

Notizen: A general method is presented for the analysis of horizontally embedded anchors in an elastic soil. Provision is made in the analysis for the consideration of anchor shape, layer depth, anchor-soil interface condition, breakaway of the anchor from the underlying soil and interaction between groups of anchors.Application of the analytical technique is illustrated for strip and circular anchors, and these solutions are presented in the form of influence charts which may be used directly in hand calculations to predict the elastic load deflection behaviour, of anchor plates for a wide variety of material and geometric conditions.

Notizen: Recently, instability of slender piles during installation has been analysed as a non-conservative buckling process. For these results to be of potential use in practice, simple procedures are necessary whereby piles of arbitrary cross-section installed in ground with arbitrarily varying properties can be treated. This paper lists discrete element matrices which enable the prediction of the onset of instability in piles assuming conservative or non-conservative ground resistance. The same matrices can then be used to incorporate effects of incipient instability in driveability analyses.

In particular the ‘Level II’ and ‘Level II’ approaches as defined by the Joint Committee of Structural Safety (J.C.S.S.) are referred to; these are set forth in C.I.R.I.A. Report No. 631 and attention is drawn to the contributions therein by M. J. Baker and M. Horne, and to how these considerations affect this particular problem. The mechanical model used throughout is Bishop's simplified method2.

Notizen: A numerical technique, based on a mathematical programming algorithm, is presented for the solution of geotechnical problems where elastic-plastic material behaviour is considered. The proposed approach can be adopted for geotechnical media characterized by any suitable yield condition, accounting, if necessary, for workhardening behaviour. The loading process is subdivided into a series of steps applied to a finite element mesh with geometry and material properties constant along each step, but with possible changes between subsequent steps. As an application some typical geotechnical problems are analysed by means of the proposed algorithm and a comparison is made between the available in situ measurements and the numerical results.

Notizen: One proposed geothermal heat extraction scheme relies on water circulation in a large vertical crack created by hydraulic fracturing in a hot dry impermeable rock mass. Water flow, heat convection and crack opening widths are analysed by finite elements. Governing field equations of the problem are first set up rigorously and then various small terms are identified and neglected, retaining the effects of pressure gradient, buoyancy, velocity head (kinetic energy) and head loss due to viscous friction in the water flow equation, and the effects of heat convection in water and heat conduction in rock in the heat transfer equation. The finite element scheme for water flow is based on a variational principle that is typical for diffusion problems, and for heat transfer it is based on the method of least-square residuals. The system of differential equations is highly non-linear. The non-linear terms and coefficients are treated in the fiaite element analysis as constant; the finite element analysisof, the steady-state pressures, fluxes and temperatures is then iterated, evaluating all non-linear terms and coefficients on the basis of the solution obtained in the previous iteration. Numerically calculated fields at various times after the start ofcooling are presented. They indicate some features favourable for the geothermal scheme, such as formation of eddy currents, and downward flux of water toward hotter rock. However, other important questions would have to be solved to gain full understanding, of this proposed geothermal scheme.

Notizen: A method is derived to estimate the degree of consolidation of a saturated, non-homogeneous clay layer. In this method, the diffusion equation govering the dissipation of pore water pressure is transformed so that the pore water pressure can be expressed by a Fourier series. The Fourier coefficients are then evaluated along the trajectory of the diffusion process. The Fourier series does not converge point-wise to the pore water pressure; instead, it converges to the pore water pressure in the mean., The Fourier series can be used to estimate the degree of consolidation, because, by Schwartz's inequality, convergence in the mean implies convergence in the degree of consolidation.

Notizen: A theoretical formulation and a numerical solution method are proposed for the problem of the time dependent consolidation of an elasto-plastic soil subject to finite deformations. The soil is assumed to be a two-phase material with a skeleton which may yield according to a general yield criterion with plastic flow governed by a general flow law, and whose pore fluid flows according to Darcy's Law. Governing equations are cast in a rate form and constitutive laws are expressed in a frame indifferent manner. The method of analysis is illustrated by several examples of practical interest for both a soil with an elastic skeleton and a soil with an elasto-plastic skeleton which obeys a Morh-Coulomb yield criterion and a non-associated flow law.

Notizen: A number of variational principles are established in this paper for the stress analysis of porous media with compressible constituents. A three-dimensional finite element method is proposed based on the variational principle. The finite element method thus established is applied to the study of the temperature, deformation and flow field associated with the water-flood technique in secondary recovery projects for oil exploration. In the study model, the layout of injection wells and production wells is considered to have a regular pattern where symmetry conditions exist. The injection fluid diffuses slowly into the formation through a vertical crack which is initially generated by an explosion. The problem is analysed by a plane strain formulation with the effects of heat conduction and convection included.

Notizen: A numerical procedure is presented for the downdrag analysis of group piles which penetrate a consolidating upper soil layer to socket into a firm bearing stratum of finite stiffness. The settlement of the consolidating upper soil layer under a surcharge load is estimated using Terzaghi's one-dimensional consolidation theory. Parametric solutions are presented to show the influence of various parameters on the performance of the socketed pile groups in terms of the development of the induced downdrag forces and associated pile head settlements. In general, pile-soil-pile interaction has the beneficial effect of reducing the downdrag forces and settlements of the group piles when compared to the corresponding single pile values, provided that the soil settlements are not so large as to cause full slippage at the interface in all the piles. Reasonable agreement is obtained between the theoretical and experimental results for pile groups subjected to negative skin friction.

Notizen: The paper outlines the theory of generalized plasticity in which yield and plastic potential surfaces need not be explicitly defined, and shows how a very effective general model describing the behaviour of sands and of clays under monotonic or transient loading can be developed. The model is currently one of the simplest and yet one of the most effective ones for describing the full range of behaviour. The hierarchical structure of the model limits the number of parameters which have to be experimentally determined for a given material to those strictly necessary for the problem at hand.A discussion of currently used models is included.

Notizen: A semi-analytic solution for the migration of dilute reactive contaminant species in a fractured medium having a one-, two- or three-dimensional fracture network is presented. The application of the technique to practical problems is discussed and illustrated by examples. The effects of sorption in the matrix and on the surface of the fractures are considered for a range of parameters. It is demonstrated that the synergistic interaction of the various parameters is such that the effect of changing a single variable may not be immediately obvious and a designer should perform computations for the range of expected parameters to determine the maximum impact. For example, it is shown that it is not necessarily conservative to consider only one-dimensional or only three-dimensional diffusion into the matrix; which of these cases is most critical will depend on the values of other parameters. It is also shown that an effective leachate collection system may significantly reduce the impact of those contaminants which do escape into the fractured media.

Notizen: In this paper the stability of layered, anisotropic, hypoelastic media under initial stress is investigated. The bifurcation problem is formulated and solved numerically by use of a semi-analytical transfer matrix method. An alternative analytical approach in dealing with inhomogeneous media is developed by representing a periodically layered medium as a homogeneous Cosserat continuum. The Cosserat-continuum approach is validated against the numerical transfer matrix solution.

Notizen: In this paper the stress and moment stress distribution in a periodically layered half plane due to an arbitrary surface loading are derived. The bending stiffness of each layer is considered within the framework of Cosserat's continuum theory. Special emphasis is given to the case when the shear modulus of the one type of layer is much smaller than that of an adjacent layer. Results are illustrated for the case of a strip loading.

Notizen: Progressive failure in long natural clay slopes with an underlying weak shear zone is studied. The clay slope is assumed to be elastic-perfectly plastic, whereas the shear zone may have an elastic-plastic strain softening behaviour. The failure will occur due to the development of large shear deformations in the weak zone. The general behaviour, including the possibility of progressive failure, can be studied by the use of a one-dimensional finite element model. Other interesting matters which can be studied are critical load, critical disturbance and critical length of the slope. Numerical examples show the overall behaviour due to different residual shear strengths of the weak layer, end disturbance or change of pore pressure in the weak layer. Although simple, the proposed finite element model provides a practically applicable tool for the prediction of whether progressive failure will occur and in which manner the local failure will propagate.

Notizen: Laplace transform solutions are derived for an evolving permafrost region in saturated ground when the freezing interface moves with constant speed. The solution is inverse in the sense that the melting temperature at the interface and the groud surface temperature are prescribed functions of time. The solution procedure incorporates an initial temperature distribution in a domain extended above the ground surface. This allows, by asymptotic analysis, the construction of initially continuous melting and surface temperatures with bounded first and second derivatives. Solutions for two classes of initial conditions are determined by numerical inversion of the transforms. These solutions are used to test the corresponding solutions obtained by a direct finite difference algorithm developed earlier.1 Good agreements for both interface path and temperature profiles are obtained in both classes.

Notizen: Thermodynamic and physical principles are applied in conjunction with the concepts of endochronic plasticity to develop a theory of constitutive behaviour of soils with dilatant capability. Three separate constitutive models are derived within the framework of the proposed theory, all capable of accounting for shear-volume coupling of soil within the context of endochronic plasticity. One specific model is singled out as the most appropriate on the basis of its analytical simplicity and the plausibility of its thermodynamic and physical foundations. A simple example is worked out for the purposes of illustration.

Notizen: The paper reviews the application of numerical methods in tunnelling, the achievements and the shortcomings, hence also the future tasks for closing the gap between real ground behaviour in critical tunnelling situations and the present approaches by numerical models. After discussing the role of the structural model within the entire design procedure for a tunnel project, problems are mentioned where numerical methods are essential. This is explained for soft ground tunnelling as well as for tunnels in rock. A special section is devoted to the kind of numerical models needed for the interpretation of field measurements. There is still much to do, especially in covering failure modes of tunnels by numerical analysis. The paper is a shorter version (e.g. without photographs of the actual tunnelling work) of a lecture presented at the Innsbruck Conference on Numerical Methods in 1988.

Notizen: The implications of assuming isotropic elasto-plasticity to model the behaviour of soil under simple shear conditions are considered. For small strains, use of such a model implies the following three consequences: (1) strains and strain increments at any stage of shearing may be expressed as the sum of elastic and plastic components; (2) principal directions of stress and of plastic strain increment are collinear; (3) principal directions of stress increment and of elastic strain increment are collinear. These consequences are used in order to establish relationships between the stresses, stress increments and strains which develop in a simple shear test. No additional assumptions with regards the form of the yield function, the flow rule or the hardening function are required for this development. By defining the ratio of the plastic to the total shear strain increment on the horizontal plane (the plane of zero extension) as λ, it is possible to define the horizontal normal stress σx in terms of λ and other stresses and strains which are normally known during simple shear loading. As a result, all components of the stress tensor in the simple shear plane may be defined. Results of some direct simple shear tests on soft clay have been interpreted using the model and found to be generally consistent with some of the observations reported in the literature from tests in which boundary stresses were measured.

Notizen: By using the Mellin transform, a general solution is obtained for the total stresses and pore pressure distribution in an infinite wedge under fairly general conditions of loading. The results for the particular case in which each surface is subjected to static sinusoidal pressures are given in an explicit form. The infinite integrals can be evaluated by numerical integration methods. This analytical method is verified by different cases. The results of this study could be used to determine the total stresses and pore pressures induced by a wave on a sloping seabed.

Notizen: Zero-thickness interface elements are applied to solve plasticity problems involving singular points where stresses and displacements are non-unique. Singular points occur in soil-structure interaction, e.g. at the ridges of footings, buried structures and foundation piles. Here the introduction of potential displacement discontinuities appears to give quite accurate finite element solutions. This is demonstrated for indentation problems both for plane strain and axisymmetric situations. In all problems the soil behaviour is modelled by the elastic-plastic Mohr-Coulomb model.

Notizen: Constitutive equations for the mechanical and hydraulic behaviour of saturated porous rock with joint sets of specified orientations are developed by superposing continuum representations for the mechanical and hydraulic properties of the intact rock and each of the joint sets. The resulting continuum theory allows for fluid diffusion through and between interconnected rock pores and joint sets of specified orientation, and also accounts for the anisotropy of the mechanical properties due to joint stiffnesses. The accuracy and reliability of this model are verified by finite element simulation of example problems. The first example considers joint orientation-dependent rock deformation in a hypothetical porous medium with one joint set of different dip angles. More realistic examples related to rock slope stability and reservoir-induced seismicity are also considered in which the constitutive law's utility for modelling time-dependent fluid pressures is illustrated.

Notizen: The slide line approach is combined with the finite element method to represent the action of a removable block on a lined tunnel. The present paper examines the strength and ductility required of the tunnel liner to resist the forces imposed by a block when the surrounding rock mass is subjected to explosive loading. Key block theory developed by Goodman and Shi provides the conceptual framework for simplifying a general jointed domain to a manageable size for analysis with finite element models.

Notizen: Coupling and uncoupling between the equilibrium and mass balance equations in soil consolidation problems in investigated in detail. A procedure for judging the strength of coupling is indicated. In the applications, particular emphasis is given to subsidence problems where the coupled nature of the problem is still sometimes questioned. It is shown that even in the case of a single pumped aquifer most situations are coupled.

Notizen: In this article we solve the equations for a 2D model of compaction of sedimentary basins saturated with water by the finite-element method. This compaction model considers the rock described by the porosity as a function of effective stress, and both the anisotropic permeability and the anisotropic heat conductivity as functions of porosity. The water density is approximated linearly in the water pressure and temperature, and the water viscosity is a function of temperature. The main variables in the model are the water excess pressure and the temperature, and we account for an implicit solution scheme where we solve for both main variables simultaneously. The non-linearities in the model are either dealt with by the Newton method or by fixed-point iterations. We compare the coupled solution of temperature and pressure with the same decoupled equations. Then we study the contribution to the temperature by convection, the effect of the non-constant water density, and some anisotropic case examples.

Notizen: In the idealised modelling of ground distortion induced by a freely deposited heap of granular material, consideration is given to a fundamental problem in classical elasticity whereby an axisymmetric distribution of vertical conical loading is applied to the surface of a half-space. Closed-form expressions are derived for the deformed shape of the surface, and three variations of the integral transform method are described for determining stresses and displacements within the half-space. Extensive numerical results are presented in graphical form.

Notizen: A non-linear optimization technique based on the quasi-Newton approach is employed to back-calculate certain model parameters of a simple, bounding surface, soil plasticity model from in situ pressuremeter data. The theoretical response corresponding to a given set of parameters is generated by finite element analysis. A semi-analytical procedure is developed for the accurate and efficient evaluation of the gradient of objective function with respect to the model parameters of interest. The BFGS update is used to update the Hessian. Results of a series of numerical experimentation using artificial pressuremeter responses is first reported and discussed. A set of laboratory cavity expansion data is then used to calibrate the constitutive model.

Notizen: A method is presented which allows the computation of the displacements and pore pressures which are generated in an elastic soil when excavation is carried out. The formulation is based on Biot's theory and is fully coupled, with consideration also given to the effects of the lowering of the water table which often accompanies the excavation of soil. Example problems are solved to illustrate the theory which has been presented.

Notizen: The calculation of stresses induced inside the soil mass by the foundation loads forms an essential step in most of the geotechnical engineering problems dealing with the probable behaviour of foundations. The distribution of stresses on horizontal planes containing reinforcements at various depths is required in the analysis and design of reinforced soil foundations. An accurate evaluation of contact pressure distribution at the interface is a prerequisite for the computation of stresses inside the soil mass. Of the several approaches the elastic-plastic approach of computing the contact pressure distribution appears to be reasonable. Using this approach non-dimensional equations have been derived for calculating the contact pressure distribution beneath rigid circular foundations on sands. The contact pressure distribution so derived has been used for computing the stresses at various points using elastic theory. The results have been graphically presented and are compared with Boussinesq's distribution for uniform contact pressure.

Notizen: The properties of a previously published isotropic non-linear elastic model with an elastic potential are illustrated in detail. Its parameter determination is elaborated and a parameter list is composed on the basis of published experimental data. The formulation with the elastic potential is shown to enable the minimization of numerical drift in incremental calculations of the deformation for alternating loading.

Notizen: A model for vibro-driving of rigid piles in sand is proposed incorporating the interaction of the vibrator-pile-soil system. The vibro-driver force and the non-linear soil resistance (dynamic f-w and q-w relationships) have been quantified in terms of in situ stress, relative density and particle size. The influence of relative density (0·65 and 0·90), particle size (effective grain size of 0·2 mm and 1·2 mm) and in situ stress (up to 20 psi) on the vibro-driving of a closed-ended pipe pile was investigated experimentally using a large-scale laboratory testing system. The vibro-driving model predicted the observed driving history reasonably well. A computer program (UHVIBRO) has been developed to analyse vibratory pile driving using the dynamic soil resistance relationships developed along with correlation factors from the systematic laboratory study.

Notizen: This paper examines difficulties encountered when using the Green-Nagdi rate and presents an updated configuration formulation for problems dealing with large deformations. It is shown that a natural link can be established between the updated reference configuration and linearized updated Lagrangian formulations, if Truesdell's objective stress rate is used. Owing to this connection, any limitations associated with the described formulation would be expected to also apply to an updated Lagrangian formulation and vice versa. It is pointed out that, if second-order effects are induced, the Truesdell rate appears in the rate equation for equilibrium even when strains are infinitesimal. By examining a simple-shear problem, where hypoelastic material behaviour with ‘Hooke's law’ is assumed, it is shown that the spherical state of stress is coupled with the shear stress when using the Truesdell or Green-Nagdi stress rate. It is suggested that objective stress rates, introduced in large-deformation formulations, may contribute to erroneous predictions if a constitutive law is developed independent of the adopted stress rate.

Notizen: Since the attenulation of propagating waves through soil/rock is related to the localized material properties as well as the strain developed, the commonly used Rayleigh-type damping model and its variations are not suitable for dynamic finite element analysis of such materials.A linear viscoelastic material model based on the concept of the relaxation spectrum is manipualted in place of the damping model in this paper. The method proposed by Day and Minster11 to transform the convolutional form of the stress-strain relationship to a set of differential operators using the Pade approximant method is generalized to non-scalar waves and implemented for transient finite element analyses. A time-marching scheme is also proposed to incorporate the resultant differential operators into the governing equation of motion. The accuracy related to the Pade approximant method and the time-marching scheme is investigated by critically analysing some scalar wave propagation problems. The proposed technique is further verified using two one-dimensional stress wave propagation problems and a two-dimensional transient propagating wave through an unbounded linear viscoelastic medium. Some encouraging results have been obtained using the proposed technique and guidelines for using this technique are also presented. Comparisons of analytical solutions obtained by Fourier synthesis and numerical results have been provided.

Notizen: It is classically assumed that the pressuremeter modulus (determined from the initial slope of the pressuremeter expansion curve) can be used as an estimate for the soil's shear modulus, provided disturbance effects can be neglected. This approximation is only rigorous in the plane-strain case and requires that the height of the cell be large in comparison with its diameter. The present paper allows to quantify the error that results from this approximation as a function of the height over diameter ratio. The analysis is based on an application of the variational principles of elasticity. It is shown that the static and the kinematic approaches lead, respectively, to a lower- and an upper-bound estimate of the pressuremeter modulus expressed in terms of the soil's elastic coefficients. The calculations are completely carried out in the case of an infinite cavity subjected to a pressure on a finite length. It is shown that the plane-strain approximation overestimates the shear modulus. Based on the kinematic approach, a method is developed to derive the shear modulus from the pressuremeter modulus which accounts for the finite slenderness of the cell. This method can be extended to more complex geometries and material properties, including soil heterogeneity and anisotropy.
