    Notes: Complexation constants with the macrocyclic azoniacyclophane CP44 and phenyl guest compounds with at least four fluorine atoms or alternatively protons at the ring were obtained by NMR shift titrations in water. The fluorinated compounds show free energies of complexation which are smaller by ΔΔG=3·4-7·7 kJ mol-1 in comparison with the protonated compounds. The NMR shifts induced upon 100% complexation (CIS values) were obtained simultaneously from non-linear least-squares fitting and indicate intra-cavity inclusion in all cases. The CIS values agree roughly with screening constants calculated from aromatic ring current and linear electric field effects, the latter resulting from the permanent charges at the host compound. Molecular mechanics calculations (CHARMm) indicate that intracavity inclusion is possible with all compounds with negligible strain induced (〈1 kJ mol-1) in the macrocycle upon complexation. In contrast, α-cyclodextrin can accommodate fluorinated phenyl compounds only at the rim of the cavity without larger strain. Preliminary data with α-cyclodextrin, obtained by competitive UV-visible titration with methyl orange, indicate again a smaller association free energy (ΔΔG=1·-7 kJ mol-1) for pentafluorphenol compared with normal phenol as guest. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: The guest-binding behavior of two different cyclophane hosts, each being capable of providing a three-dimensionally extended hydrophobic cavity toward aromatic guests, was examined in aqueous media: a steroid cyclophane bearing four rigid cholate moieties and an octopus cyclophane having four flexible double-chain segments. Even though the binding constant for 2,7-dihydroxynaphthalene with the steroid cyclophane was comparable to that with the octopus cyclophane, the guest binding modes were very different from each other, as confirmed by 1H NMR spectroscopy. That is, the steroid cyclophane incorporates the guest into its rigid macrocyclic cavity with axial geometry whereas the octopus cyclophane provides a three-dimensional space created by the macrocyclic skeleton and the flexible hydrocarbon chains so that the long axis of the guest becomes more or less perpendicular to the molecular axis of the host upon complexation. Temperature-dependent molecular recognition by these hosts toward 8-anilinonaphthalene-1-sulfonate was examined by means of fluorescence spectroscopy. Characteristic differences in the guest-binding mode between these hosts were sensitively reflected in the thermodynamic entropy change on host-guest complexation and the temperature-dependent microscopic viscosity experienced by the guest at the binding site. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: The recent surge of interest in the control of molecular organization in both the solution state (i.e. self-assembly) and the solid state (i.e. crystal engineering) has led researchers to recognize increasingly the importance of weak non-covalent interactions. The design and synthesis of an efficient molecular construction set are dependent upon a very close interplay between x-ray crystallography and synthetic chemistry. π-π Stacking interactions between π-donors, such as hydroquinone, resorcinol or dioxynaphthalene residues, and π-accepting ring systems, such as bipyridinium or π-extended viologen units, can govern the self-assembly of a variety of complexes and interlocked molecular compounds in both the solid and solution states. Non-covalent bonding interactions (i.e. π-π interactions) can be considered as information vectors: they define and rule the self-assembly processes that lead to the formation of the desired molecular and supramolecular architectures, and thereafter they still govern the dynamic processes occurring within the self-assembled structures and superstructures. The manner in which such molecules and supermolecules can contribute to an understanding of non-covalent interactions at both structural and superstructural levels is described, with reference to numerous examples of self-assembly processes in synthesis, of dynamic processes in the solution state, and of the packing of molecules and molecular complexes in the solid state. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: ---Thirty ferrocene derivatives were prepared and their ability to form vesicles in aqueous solution when oxidized was assessed. The compounds included alkyl ferrocenylmethyl ether derivatives of the form C10H9FeCH2OR in which R=octyl, dodecyl, tetradecyl, hexadecyl, octadecyl and eicosanyl. One single-tailed amine derivative, C10H9FeCH2NR2, R=octadecyl, was studied. Alkylferrocene derivatives had the form C10H9FeR in which R=butyl, decyl, tetradecyl, hexadecyl, octadecyl, eicosanyl and docosanyl. Sixteen symmetrical 1,1′-disubstituted ferrocenes were also studied. Three ethers were of the form C10H8Fe-1,1′-(CH2OR),2, R=tetradecyl, hexadecyl and octadecyl. Four corresponding dialkyl derivatives of the form C10H8Fe-1,1′-R2, R=decyl, tetradecyl, hexadecyl and octadecyl, were assessed. Finally, a range of 1,1′-disubstituted ferrocene derivatives were analyzed. These all had the form C10H8Fe-1,1′-(COR)2, for which R has the following identities: octyl, tridecyl, pentadecyl and heptadecyl (ketones); heptadecyloxy, 3-cholesteryl and 3-cholestanyl (esters); and two amides, R=NHC18H37 and N(C18H37)2. The alkyl and ether derivatives could be readily oxidized and formed vesicular aggregates upon sonication. The ketones, esters and amides could be oxidized but the ferricenium derivatives did not form stable aggregates. An interesting observation is that the aggregates formed were vesicular whether the ferrocene derivative had one or two alkyl tails. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: Non-covalent intermolecular forces have been recognized as a very important part of molecular interactions in complex biological systems. The fundamental functions of living matter such as transcription of genetic information in DNA, spatial arrangement of protein molecules, enzymatic functions or immunity system response are enabled owing to the presence of weak non-covalent forces based on hydrogen bonding interactions, van der Waals interactions, electrostatic interactions, hydrophobic effects, etc. Recently, among them so-called "cation-π" interactions have been proved to contribute to the overall binding process in various artificial or biological systems. Calix[n]arenes have emerged as an important family of molecules with promising applications in many branches of chemistry. Because of their suitable molecular preorganization with aromatic units being "concentrated' in a relatively small space, calix[n]arenes represent interesting compounds exhibiting an enhanced ability for cation-π interactions. The importance of such forces in calix[n]arene chemistry is demonstrated here on several recent examples. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: ---Evidence is provided for the enormous role of hydrophobic interactions in aqueous solutions. It is concluded that complementary functions of hydrophilic and of hydrophobic species are in continuous operation and that these are a conditio sine qua non for the existence of the liquid. With regard to the supermolecular aggregations, hydrophobic interactions are operative on the highest hierarchic levels of the system organization, i.e. at the interface and at the holes around dissolved hydrophobic species. It is further emphasized that water is essential both for the unity and for the differentiation of each living organism. With regard to its role for the differentiation of the body, the hydrophobic interactions are of paramount importance, notably those provided by amphipathic solutes. The cell membrane is considered to be the result of interactions between the highest hierarchic levels of intracellular and extracellular water. The hydrophobic double layer provides the barriers for the separation of intracellular and extracellular water and at the same time the connections for recognition and for exchange of information between them. The DNA structures obtain conservative boundary conditions for their surrounding water systems which do not freeze at -60 °C. These water systems are dynamically superior to all other parts of the water system of the organism. It is suggested that more knowledge about the abilities of liquid water can be obtained by giving appropriate attention to its properties within the living body. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: ---The standard Gibbs energy changes for the formation of 1:1 charge-transfer complexes between molecular iodine and several bases in solution at 25·0 °C [ΔG0l2(soln)] were determined experimentally. The bases were 2,2,2-trifluoro- ethylamine, cyclopropylamine and 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine. These [ΔG0l2(soln)] values, determined in n-heptane, and also that for the formation of the 1:1 complex between 2,2,2-trifluoroethanethiol and molecular iodine in dichloromethane, were found to follow with excellent precision the correlation equations linking ΔG0l2(soln) and the intrinsic (gas-phase) basicities of N(sp3), N(sp2) and S(sp3) bases. These findings strongly support previous conclusions regarding the relationship between gas-phase and solution reactivity data. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: Whenever hydrogen bonding is involved in molecular recognition, the possibility of a proton transfer from the donor to the acceptor arises. In most cases the pKa of the donor is far enough above the pKa of the conjugate acid of the acceptor for it to be clear that no proton transfer will occur. However, as the difference between the donor and acceptor pKas decreases, it can become difficult to predict whether a proton transfer will occur. Since most hydrogen bond-driven molecular recognition is studied in low dielectric solvents, non-aqueous titrations can be used to measure the pKas and therefore predict proton transfers. In this paper three studies which involved non-aqueous titrations are summarized. The first deals with distinguishing simple proton transfer from host-guest complex formation. The second involves measuring pKa shifts upon host-guest complex formation. The last is a study of the catalysis of a phosphoryl transfer. In all three scenarios the non-aqueous titration method gave results which would have been difficult to obtain by other means, and which proved crucial for a complete understanding of the molecular recognition process. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: The linear free energy equationlogk′ = c + rR2 + sπ2H + a∑α2H + b∑β2 + vVxwas applied to the capacity factors for various sets of solutes on C18 stationary phases with aqueous methanol and acetonitrile eluents. Here, k′ are the capacity factors for a series of solutes with a given C18 phase and a given eluent, and R2, π2H, ∑α2H, ∑β2, Vx are parameters or descriptors of the solutes as follows: R2 is an excess molar refraction, π2H is the solute polarizability/dipolarity, ∑α2H and ∑β2 are the solute hydrogen-bond acidity and basicity and Vx is the solute volume. It is shown that although the regression coefficients r, s, a, b and v vary widely within the C18 column and mobile phase used, the ratios r/v, s/v, a/v and b/v are remarkably constant. Thus, for the retention of 25 series of solutes on six different C18 columns with 30-90% aqueous methanol as the eluent, all the 25 LFER equations can be combined into one general equation:logk′ = c + v(0.13 R2 - 0.32 π2H - 0.22 ∑α2H - 0.90 ∑β2O + 1.00 Vx)where only c and v vary from system to system. For 11 other phases for which data are available, the ratios v/A and (v + c)/A are constant, where A is the quantity of stationary phase per unit surface area. Similar results were found with C18 phases and aqueous acetonitrile as eluents. Although a first examination of equations based on the first equation above suggests that various C18 phases behave differently, for example the v coefficient, that is related to the observed hydrophobicity of a stationary phase relative to the mobile phase, varies considerably from phase to phase with the same eluent, a detailed analysis led to the conclusion that all the C18 phases examined have roughly the same hydrophobicity, when the v coefficients are corrected for the quantity of stationary phase per unit surface area. It is suggested that these corrected v coefficients, v/A and (v + c)/A, can be regarded as the ‘intrinsic’ phase hydrophobicity. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: ---The mechanisms for chiral recognition by cyclodextrins (CDxs) are discussed. Examples of host-guest systems where the "lock-and-key mechanism" and the "three-point rule" are applicable are cited and discussed. Most results reported so far suggest that the ability of native CDxs and chemically modified CDxs to discriminate between enantiomers of guests having a central chirality is low in aqueous solutions. Small ΔΔG values for enantioselective complexation of CDxs with amino acids seem to be due to unpredictably small changes in the structures of the complexes of the guest enantiomers. Therefore, it is very difficult to prove the participation of hydrogen bonding in chiral recognition through the "three-point rule" in these systems. The use of the Coulomb interaction and the coordinate bonds as point interactions is discussed. CDxs might be good hosts to recognize axial chirality or helicity of guests. Hydrogen bonding in water is assumed in the recognition of the helicity of bilirubin. Very large ΔΔG values have been reported for the chiral recognition of the binaphthyl derivatives. Such a system seems to be a suitable model system to study the mechanism of chiral recognition by CDxs. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: The rate data for the Menschutkin reaction between strongly activated Z-substituted benzyl p-toluenesulfonates and Y-substituted N,N-dimethylanilines in acetonitrile at 35 °C fit the equation, kobs  =  k1 + k2 [DMA], which is consistent with concurrent first- and second-order processes. The k1 and k2 values for each substrate were separated based on the above equation. The SN1 rate constant, k1, is unaffected by the nature of the nucleophile, whereas the SN2 rate constant, k2, increased with the electron-donating substituent of the N,N-dimethylaniline. The substituent effect on the k1 values is linearly correlated by the Yukawa-Tsuno equation with ρ  =  -5.2 and r  =  1.3. The unimolecular reaction can be regarded as a classical SN1 mechanism. In contrast, that on the k2 values shows an upward curvature when analyzed by the Brown σ+ treatment. These results are ascribed to the simultaneous and independent occurrence of SN1 and SN2 mechanisms in the present Menschutkin reaction. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: Solution enthalpies of n-hexane, acetone, butan-2-one and octan-2-one in a series of tetrachloromethane-acetonitrile mixtures and the carbonyl stretching absorption frequencies in the IR spectra of these ketones were determined. It was found that over the whole range of concentrations (varying from neat tetrachloromethane up to neat acetonitrile) the solvation enthalpy of these compounds can be obtained additively from the contributions of the alkyl and carbonyl fragments. The solvent effect on the solvation enthalpy of the carbonyl group was found to be satisfactorily correlated with the corresponding IR frequency shifts of the C=O group. It was also found that the sensitivities of the carbonyl IR frequencies to the solvent composition are different for various ketones. From both IR and calorimetric data, the preferential solvation parameters were evaluated. The differences between the IR spectroscopic and calorimetric data are discussed. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: In an effort to model solute-solvent interactions, the C=O stretching frequencies of five 1-substituted 2-pyrrolidinones and four other carbonyl-containing compounds were measured for 30 common solvents. These were then correlated with four empirical parameter sets and one theoretical (computational) parameter set. While an empirical parameter set gave the best correlation equations, the theoretical parameter equations are physically and statistically significant. Solvent volume, polarizability and hydrogen bond donor acidity (capacity) terms are significant in the correlation equations. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: The P - S bond cleavage process in the hydroperoxidolysis of a model system for the nerve agent VX was studied using ab initio and semiempirical molecular orbital methods. Aqueous solvation effects were included through single-point calculations using the semiempirical SM5.2PD/A continuum solvation model and geometries optimized at the HF/MIDI! level of theory. The predominant pathway for P - S bond cleavage involves pseudorotation of a low-energy trigonal bipyramidal intermediate followed by apical ligand ejection. In aqueous solution, the free energy barriers for these processes are found to be 14.3 and 4.6 kcal mol-1, respectively, with electronic energies calculated at the MP2/cc-pVDZ//HF/MIDI! level of theory. Isobutene was formed in 99% yield through first-order reactions having the following Arrhenius parameters (A,s-1, Ea, kJ mol-1): MPSA, log A  =  12.41 ± 0.02, Ea  =  158.8 ± 0.2; MOSA, log A  =  12.91 ± 0.22, Ea  =  159 ± 3. It is proposed that the elimination of isobutene takes place by unimolecular reaction mechanisms involving polar, four-center cyclic transition states, forming S-unsubstituted thiohydroxylamines as co-products. Thermochemical parameters, estimated by semiempirical AM1 calculations, are reported for the latter and for the parent molecules. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The effects of PhS groups on acidities and BDEs in a series of C - H acids were found to be comparable to those on acidities and BDEs of PhS in a similar series of N - H acids. Comparisons were also made of the effects of changing the oxidation state of sulfur in the series PhS, PhSO and PhSO2 on the acidities and BDEs of adjacent N - H and C - H bonds in weak acids. Hammett-type plots of pKHA values for phenyl benzyl sulfones (4-GC6H4CH2SO2Ph) and phenylsulfenylanilides (4-GC6H4NHSPh) were linear vs σp- values. A linear plot was obtained and explained for a plot of BDE of the N - H bonds in remotely substituted phenylsulfonylanilides with σ+ values. Plots of BDEs vs Eox(A-) were also linear for 4-substituted phenylsulfenylanilides (4-GC6H4NHSPh), phenylsulfonylanilides (4-GC6H4NHSO2Ph) and phenyl benzyl sulfones (4-GC6H4CH2SO2Ph). © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: The prototropic tautomerism of 8-azaadenine (azaade) was studied theoretically by means of ab initio methods, in both the gas phase and aqueous solution. A number of tautomeric forms were not included in the calculations after applying a stepwise elimination procedure based on both AM1 and HF/6-31G* energy values. The tautomers 9H-azaade, 8H-azaade and 7H-azaade survived to this elimination and their optimized geometries and energies were calculated at the MP2/6-31*//HF/6-31G* level. To include the solvent effects, two self-consistent reaction field method were used: (1) Onsager's SCRF with multipolar expansion up to the hexadecapolar term and (2) the isodensity polarizable continuum method (IPCM). Both methods produce similar results, although the latter represents better the situation in aqueous solution. The stability order in solution, 8H- 〉 9H- 〉 7H-azaade, differs slightly from that found in the gas phase, implying that in general the electrostatic effects in solution are important, but the intrinsic stability of these species in the gas phase overcomes the solvent effect. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: Cyclic voltamograms of the solvatochromic dye 5-nitro-5′-dimethylamino-2,2′-bisthiophene (1), introduced recently as a sensitive π* probe, were recorded in different solvents. An EPR spectrum of the anionic radical of 1 in DMSO was obtained and compared with other spectra of analogous substituted bisthiophene radicals. It was found that the presence of a donor- acceptor pair of substituents in 1-⋅ reduces significantly the rotational barrier of the radical compared with the unsubstituted bithienyl radical anion 2-⋅. This is the result of an electronic repulsion between the donor ring fragment and the added electron in the coplanar radical, which does not exist in 2-⋅. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography [LiChrosorb RP-18,UV detection at 254 nm and acetonitrile-water (86:14,v/v) as mobile phase] was applied to studies of the host-guest complexation of tetraalkylcalix[4]resorcinareneoctols and their upper rim phosphoryl, sulfonyl and dialkylaminomethyl derivatives with some aromatic guests in the mobile phase. It was shown that the formation of the inclusion complexes results in changes in the retention of aromatic guests and improves their separation. Stability constants of the complexes were calculated from the dependences of the l/k′ values of the aromatic guest on the concentration of the calix[4]resorcinarene in the mobile phase. The molecular structure of 4,6,16,18-tetrahydroxy-10,12,22,24-tetrakis(dipropoxyphosphoryloxy)-2,8,14,20-tetramethylcalix[4]resorcinarene (12) was determined. Crystal data for 12 are P21/n, a  =  16.708(9) Å, b  =  18.683(6) Å, c  =  20.243(5) Å, β  =  95.75(3)°, V  =  6287(4) Å3 and Z  =  4. Compound 12 exists in a boat conformation, in which two opposite unsubstituted resorcinol rings of the macrocyclic skeleton lie in the plane formed by four methine bridges and two diphosphorylated rings are perpendicular to the plane. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The Hammett reaction constants for the alkaline hydrolysis of the 3-/4-substituted phenoxy and thiophenoxy series are ca 0.75 and 1.10, respectively. These results are related to electrostatic field and resonance effects. Successful correlations between the carbonyl stretching frequencies and substituent constants and the rates of alkaline hydrolysis were found. Computational studies using the semi-empirical AM1 method correctly model both the details of the mechanistic pathway and the substituent effects. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: A new model of the inductive effect is proposed, allowing highly accurate theoretical calculations of inductive constants for a diversity of substituents, using a simple and readily available system of mathematics. According to this approach, the inductive effect of a substituent is considered in terms of the additive influence of its constituent atoms. A constant inherent capacity for inductive interaction with a reactive center (with a four-coordinate carbon atom chosen for such a center), represented by an atomic constant σA, is ascribed to each atom. Values of σA for a wide variety of atoms are determined, and their physical meaning is revealed to elucidate to a certain extent the physical nature of the inductive effect. In addition, the proposed model permits the convenient use in calculations of group constants σG characterizing the inductive power of groups. Values of σG are determined for molecular fragments that are most widely dealt with in organic chemistry, and the use of σA or σG constants and of their superposition is shown to have, in most cases, little or no effect on the accuracy and reproducibility of the results obtained. It is also shown that, in terms of the developed approach, the inductive effect of a substituent is closely associated with its conformation. Theoretical inductive constants were calculated for 427 organic, aromatic, organometallic and charged substituents, and they showed perfect correlation with the corresponding experimental values. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: The kinetics of the oxidation of mandelic acid (MA) by permanganate in aqueous alkaline medium at a constant ionic strength of 1.0 mol dm-3 were studied spectrophotometrically. The reaction shows first-order kinetics in [permanganate ion] and fractional order dependences in [MA] and [alkali]. Addition of products, manganate and aldehyde have no significant effect on the reaction rate. An increase in ionic strength and a decrease in dielectric constant of the medium increase the rate. The oxidation process in alkaline medium under the conditions employed in the present investigation proceeds first by formation of an alkali permanganate complex, which combines with mandelic acid to form another complex. The latter decomposes slowly followed by a fast reaction between the free radical of mandelic acid and another molecule of permanganate to give products. The reaction constants involved in the mechanism were derived. There is good agreement between the observed and calculated rate constants under different experimental conditions. The reaction was studied at different temperatures and activation parameters were computed with respect to the slow step of the proposed mechanism. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

From the effect of heavy-atom solvent on the reactions, it is reasonable to assume that 3-5 are formed via a singlet species, but 6-8 via a triplet species. The intermediacy of 2-pyrimidylnitrenium ion is consistent with the evidence derived by the above effect, by a Hammett plot with ρ = -2.9 and by effects of solvent nucleophilicity and counter-anions.     Notes: The basic sites of various oxide catalysts for the oxidative dimerisation of methane were studied by FTIR spectroscopy of adsorbed molecular probes (chloroform and CO2). The methods used are compared and the advantage of CO2 as probe for specifying the basic sites is demonstrated. The strengths of the basic sites were seen to correlate with the spectral parameters of the surface carbonates. Differences in spectral responses of carbonates are attributed to the different states of oxygen participating in their formation. The concentration of the strongest sites was estimated. A study of the catalytic activity of this system indicates that the system's activity in oxidative methane coupling depends on the presence and concentration of strong basic sites on the catalyst surface.

    Notes: The equilibria and kinetics of adsorption of lysozyme and bovine serum albumin on the Fractogel-EMD tentacle-type cation exchanger and the Fractogel-TSK conventional cation exchanger have been studied experimentally by batch stirred-tank method. Adsorption equilibrium data corresponded well to the Langmuir isotherm. For both proteins, the tentacle-type exchanger exhibited a higher binding capacity than the conventional exchanger. This is attributed to the flexibility of the functional groups in the tentacle-type exchanger which enhance optimal electrostatic interactions. The dynamic data were analyzed by a simplified data model which lumped mass transfer resistances and intrinsic adsorption kinetics into a single rate constant. For both proteins, it was found that the tentacle-type exchanger showed a smaller lumped rate coefficient than the conventional exchanger. The difference in the values of the lumped rate coefficients was shown to be due to the influence of nonlinear equilibrium constants rather than due to any difference in rate of adsorption.

    Notes: Turbidimetry has proved to be an efficient method for the quantitative study of powder agglomeration for particle sizes in the region of 1 μm. This work presents a new application of the technique for the agglomeration of α-alumina in water and in n-heptane. The method of determining the kinetic parameters of agglomeration from the initial time-evolution of turbidity is explained.Turbulent flow in the reactor has also been characterised by laser anemometry. From the turbulence intensity, the number of collisions per unit time is calculated and the agglomeration rate can therefore be determined.Good agreement is found between the values obtained respectively from turbidimetric and hydrodynamic measurements. Addition of KOH modifies the zeta potential of alumina in water and influences the agglomeration kinetics. This can also be quantitatively characterised by turbidimetry. The experimental results obtained for alumina particles of diameter 0.3 μm and 1 μm are interpreted according to the DLVO model of interaction between particles.

The solution has been obtained semi analytically using Goodman's integral method and solving the resulting differential equation by a fourth-order Runge-Kutta numerical integration algorithm. The computations reveal the strong dependence of film growth on reaction rate, diffusivity, and molar volume whereas the effect of gas-pocket volume and initial film thickness are moderate.

    Notes: The optimal layout of a chemical plant is determined by both economic and environmental aspects. The mathematical approach to this problem is given by representing the process through a superstructure, including any foreseeable process topology. It is described by integer variables, whereas real variables arise from the unit models and the thermodynamic calculations. By including process constraints and an objective function, a Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming (MINLP) optimization problem is postulated. In this paper MINLP algorithms are combined with a technique for the exergy analysis of chemical processes for the preliminary screening of process alternatives. The exergy analysis as a screening technique is advantageous due to a significantly smaller amount of required data and computing time, compared with true optimization, including cost estimation at an earlier stage of process synthesis and analysis. Thus, a broader solution space can be examined. The subsequent cost analysis has then only to be focused on a reduced set of parameters.

    Notes: Heat transfer from a buried pipe carrying a flowing liquid is analysed using a 3-dimensional geometry, transient modeling and numerical methods. The pipe is buried horizontally in soil whose initial surface temperature is assumed to be below that of the bulk soil and the pipe, and also below the freezing temperature of the liquid. The problem is solved using string-intersected-boundaries and a three-level alternating-direction-implicit finite-difference method. It is possible to predict the time taken for the fluid anywhere in the pipe to fall to its freezing point. The minimum burial depth needed so that the pipe does not freeze is also predicted. The simulation was run on an ordinary mainframe computer with very small computation times. The package developed can be used by designers such as pipeline, plant and water distribution engineers.

    Notes: A chain growth model for heterogeneous secondary reactions is developed for the pyrolysis of large wood particles and the parameters determined by nonlinear optimization. The model takes both the volatile retention time and cracking and repolymerization reactions of the vapours with the decomposing solid as well as sutocatalysis into consideration. The extent of the secondary reactions is strongly influenced by the time and the ratio of the autocatalytic (propagation) reaction rate to noncatalytic (initiation) reaction rate. The wood which has a higher value of the autocatalytic/noncatalytic ratio also has a higher exothermic heat of reaction and yields a higher amount of final char residue. This fact confirms the heterogeneous secondary reactions lead to carbon enrichment of the final residue and are accompanied with an exothermic heat of reaction. The lower activation energies of the initiation and propagation reactions as compared to primary reactions (competitive reaction model consisting of weight loss and char forming reactions) confirm autocatalysis in large particles. The sealed reactor studies of small quantities of fine wood samples show that heterogeneous secondary reactions and not lower heating rates in large particles are the main source of char formed during the thermal decomposition of large wood particles. The model predictions are in agreement with the weight loss and temperature versus time curves over a wide range of particle size and furnace temperatures.

    Notes: Intermig impellers have been postulated as very efficient for mixing highly viscous non-Newtonian fluids (such as xanthan and mycelial broths). However, no formal characterisation has been published and no fair comparisons have been made, based on accurate power drawn measurements and using equal number of impeller stages and equal diameter, if compared (for example) with the performance of Rushton turbines. Characterisation of the shape, size, and evolution of the well-mixed zones or “caverns” were correlated with power drawn, for single and dual Rushton turbines and for one- as well as two-stage Intermig unslotted impellers. Cavern evolution studies were carried out in a mixing tank (diameter=0.205 m, H/T=1.6) equipped with an accurate air bearing dynamometer. Carbopol 940 (0.25 wt.-%) was used as a model, transparent fluid. Impeller to tank diameter ratio was 0.53 for both impellers. Caverns were visualised by injecting methylene blue in the well-mixed zones. A single Rushton turbine developed larger caverns if compared with one-stage Intermig of the same diameter under power drawn below 1.5 kW m-3. At higher power drawn, both impellers behaved very similarly, reaching a limit in cavern volume of about 40% of the total liquid volume, even at very high (20 kW m03) power drawn. A similar trend characterised dual combinations: below 3 kW m-3, dual Rushtons gave larger cavern volume if compared with the performance of two-stage Intermigs. In either case, power drawn higher than 3 kW m03 was sufficient to mix more than 90% of the liquid volume. The presence or absence of the slot in the Intermig did not influence cavern development. Experiments with a smaller if compared with those obtained with the larger Intermig (D/T = 0.53).

    Notes: Interfacial properties exert a fundamental influence on fluid/liquid separation processes, with the interfacial tension being an important quantity associated with mass transfer and mutual solubility of participating compounds. A better understanding of transport phenomena is achieved by obtaining interfacial tension data under different conditions of pressure and temperature and as a function of time. Generally, interfacial tension decreases with increasing pressure due to increased adsorption of the compressed fluid at the interface. In the case of considerable mutual solubility, interfacial tension further decreases with time as mass transfer into the bulk phase proceeds. Prediction of colloidal behaviour in a separation process requires acquisition of additional information on the presence of surfactants.

    Notes: Knowledge of the compression factor is essential for the transport, storage and utilization of natural gas. The normal way to determine this property is by using an equation of state (EOS) which utilizes the gas temperature, pressure, volume, and composition. In many industrial situations, the composition of the natural gas is not available, yet it is still necessary to calculate the compression factor. In this paper, we present an EOS which uses relative density, heating value, and diluent compositions to determine the compression factor. The applicable ranges of conditions are 220 to 500 K up to 70 MPa (-60-450°F up to 10,000 psia). The calculations agree with data within 0.1% average absolute deviatation up to 10 MPa with a maximum deviation of 1.9% near pure component critical points or mixture cricondentherms. The equation also extrapolates through data up to 70 MPa within 1.9% We present comparisons to data of AGA Report No. 8 and to data in the paper.

    Notes: Complex configurations of distillation columns have been shown to consume less energy than simple configurations. These complex configurations mainly results from two considerations: either a feed split, where the condensing vapor from the top of the high pressure column is used to heat the reboiler of the low pressure column, or the overheads from a high pressure column in a distillation train used to reboil a column under lower pressure. Industrial experience shows that very often in these configurations there is still incentive for more energy reduction simply because of inefficient control. The energy integration increases the control loop coupling the system, so that the operating strategy for the columns is no longer apparent. Therefore, the dynamic behaviour and the operational constraints of such systems become very important. The use of rigorous dynamic model of the processes is an essential instruments to pursue the goal of good and reliable process control Such models allow the engineer to realistically simulate the process with the desired control system in place and to analyze the effects of equipment sizing, hest integration, and disturbances. Variable pairing proved is used to illustrate that effective control of energy-integrated distillation columns can be achieved by proper selection of manipulated variables and pairing them correctly with control variables. Hints will also be given, when multivariable predictive control schemes should be used.

    Notes: Many rectification processes are used to separate corrosive substances with high boiling points. This reports deals with a new type of structured column pacing mode of corrosion-resistant carbon fiber material. These column internals allows for low pressure drop at high throughput rated with reasonable column efficiency. Experiments in columns of 50 and 100 mm diameter have been carried out to investigated separation efficiency, pressure drop and liquid holdup of the packing even at low operation pressures. In the respective columns twp geometrical different types of packing have been tested using binary mixtures of chlorobenzene/ethylbenzene with a packing geometry similar to the Sulzer EX packing, the 100 mm diameter column was filled with elements of rougher structure and smaller specific surface. Basing on the experimental results, model equations are presented, which allow the calculation of the investigated performance characteristics.

    Notes: Mass transfer with chemical reaction by liquid/liquid phase tranfer catalysis (LLPTC) for an isothermal batch reactor was analyzed. The results for the phase transfer catalyzed reaction system can be generally described by a pseudo first-order hypothesis, whereas the reaction system can be controlled by simultaneous mass transfer of the catalysts between two liquid phases and chemical reaction in the organic phase. The mass transfer limitation is mainly from the mass transfer step of QX from the organic phase to the aqueous phase. The concept of catalyst-effectiveness vs. physically meaningful parameters in a liquid/liquid phase transfer catalyzed reaction is introduced. The catalyst effectiveness is increased as the mass transfer factors increase, the ratio of reaction rate coefficients of aqueous forward reaction to organic increases, and the equilibrium constant in the aqueous solution increases.

    Notes: The use of ozone and hydrogen peroxide for the simultaneous oxidation of nitrogen and sulfur oxides was studied in experiments carried out in a stirred cell. It was found that in a gas mixture, containing both nitrogen and sulfur oxides, only the nitrogen oxides are oxidized by ozone. Contrary to earlier results, sulfur dioxide does not disturb the oxidation of nitrogen oxides under dry conditions. The consumption of ozone in the oxidation of nitric oxide was slightly below the stoichiometric level because the ozone was introduced into the reactor in the oxygen flow. When the molar ratio between ozone and nitric oxide was more than 0.4, some of the nitric oxide was oxidized to higher oxides of nitrogen, the final product being a solid mixture of N2O5 and (NO)2S2O7. Some nitrosyl sulfuric acid was formed in the aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide in addition to sulfuric acid under wet conditions. Some white solid was found on the walls of the reactor. This solid is said it the literature to consist of H2SO4, HNOSO4 and (NO)2S2O7.

    Notes: The wetting characteristics of fine powders play an important role in a variety of processes. The most important way of characterising the wettability of a fluid/fluid/solid system is to measure the contact angle. This paper describes a relatively simple method for the determination of the contact angle on powdery materials. The technique involves the measurement of the dynamic contact angle which is formed when a liquid drop is placed on a horizontal porous surface. On the basis of the measured dynamic contact angle as a function of time an “apparent” static contact angle has been defined, which gives a measure of the wettability of porous solid systems by analogy with the wetting of non-porous solids. Determinations with glass beads and NaCl-powders as the test materials indicate that the measured value depends on the particle size of the powder, the porosity and the temperature. It was concluded that the capillary penetration of the liquid droplet into the porous media itself influences the wetting characteristics.

    Notes: A new reactive distillation device, the multistage gas/liquid/solid three-phase fluidized bed, has been developed. The flow regimes of the multistage three-phase fluidized bed have been studied and the regimes can be divided into the liquid leakage regime, the dispersed bubble regime, and the coalesced bubble regime. Liquid velocity has a much smaller effect on phase holdups in this device than in conventional three-phase fluidized beds. The three phase fluidized bed is used as a reactive distillation device for the hydrolysis of methyl acetate. Much higher reaction conversion than the equilibrium value and high catalyst-contacting efficiency are obtained. Different methods of feeding the water into the reactive distillation section are studied.

    Notes: This paper presents results of temperature-programmed desorption (TDP) as a method for studying the acid and shape-selective properties of small- and intermediate-pore zeolites.A combination of an in situ infrared spectrometer and a downstream gas chromatograph for analyzing the desorption products is used to detect the desorption process. This is followed by a separate, newly installed microbalance facility.The studies shows that a part of the amines, esp. dimethylamine (DMA) and trimethylamine (TMA), adsorbed on the zeolites undergo decomposition, disproportionation and carbonization reaction during the TDP measurements at elevated temperatures. Comparison of the microbalance measurements and the gas chromatographic results give a good picture of the extent of these reaction.

    Notes: The modern urea plants are using a stripping process to reduce the energy consumption. The potential, very severe corrosion problems have been mastered by special grades and strict process control. The different grades are reviewed. After more than 20 years operation the results are very satisfying.In ammonia plants, an often forgotten corrosion problem is found in the heat exchangers. After about 3-6 years failures caused by chloride continuing cooling water may appear on carbon steel or low alloyed austenitic stainless steels. Corrosion mechanism is reviewed. Duplex stainless steels has been used with success and the properties are presented. An example of life-cycle cost shows that duplex stainless steel is an inexpensive way to solve chloride related corrosion problems.Condensation and evaporation of nitric acid in heat exchangers in nitric acid plants cause severe corrosion on conventional stainless steel grades. Low impurity in combination with high chromium content has proved to result in stainless steel with improved corrosion resistance.

    Notes: Bubble break-up, gas holdup, and the gas-liquid volumetric mass transfer coefficient are studied in a bubble column reactor with simultaneous injection of a gas and liquid through a T-junction nozzle. The theoretical dependence of bubble break-up and the volumetric mass transfer coefficient on liquid velocity in the nozzle is developed on the basis of isotropic turbulence theory. It is shown that correlations which are developed based on liquid jet kinetic power per nozzle volume explain average gas holdup and the volumetric mass transfer coefficient within an error of 15% for all gas and liquid flow rates and nozzle diameters used. Experiments with a larger scale column, height 4.64 m and diameter 0.98 m, show a transition from homogeneous to heterogeneous flow at a certain liquid flow rate through the nozzle. Liquid composition was found to have a significant effect on gas-liquid mass transfer. A phenol concentration of 10-30 mg/l in water increases the volumetric mass transfer coefficient of oxygen by 100%. This phenomenon may have significance in the chemical oxidation of wastewater.

    Notes: The shape-selective transalkylation of biphenyl with pentamethylbenzene over ultrastable Y-faujasites to produce para-methylated biphenyls was studied in the liquid slurry phase. The reaction was carried out in a discontinuously operated stainless steel autoclave using n-heptane as the solvent with a temperature range of 513 to 533 K and a pressure of 3 MPa. As for the progress of the reaction the presence of strong Brønsted acid sites was essential, an ultrastable faujasite treated with aqueous hydrochloric acid having a high content of those sites was used as the catalyst. Thus, a yield of the target product 4,4′-dimethylbiphenyl of above 11% referring to biphenyl could be achieved. The effect of the operating conditions on the formation of the target product was investigated. The decisive influence was acted out by the molar ratio of biphenyl to alkylating agent, in so far as a surplus of pentamethylbenzene of 7:1 referring to biphenyl enhanced the yield of the target product to 14%. The kinetics of the reaction could be successfully descibed with a lumped reaction scheme, introducing pseudo components, summarizing structural isomers, and pseudo reactions, such as the formation of coke.

    Notes: The oxidation of sulfide in oxygen-saturated aqueous solutions is accelerated by dissolved or silica-bonded cobalt phthalocyanines. On the basis of thermodynamical considerations it is postulated that the catalyst enhances the formation of disulfide as the initial elementary reaction step. The following reaction steps are largely unaffected by the catalyst, as indicated by a product ratio sulfate/thiosulfate=0.86, comparable to that of the uncatalyzed autoxidation. A Langmuir-Hinshelwood formalism is developed for the catalytic reaction step and is demonstrated to fit best with the kinetics. In addition, from the kinetic data free enthalpies for the adsorption of HS- (i) at the dissolved phthalocyanine (ΔG = -17.6 kJ/mole) and (ii) at the immobilized complex (ΔG = -20.0 kJ/mole) are calculated.

    Notes: Laser diffraction (LD), with reference to the analysis time, is highly advantageous for the automation of particle size analysis. The high measuring frequencies alloy quasi-continous measuring operation. The fineness values obtained form the particle size distribution (PSD) can be transformed into electrical signals for automatic process control.For industrial purposes, an encapsulated measuring cell was developed where the laser beam penetrates the dispersed fines stream via two optical windows. Thus, hazardous materials can also be measured, specifically pharmaceutical or chemical products, or applications requiring explosion-proof plant design are possible. Great efforts had to be made to keep the inner side of the windows clean form product dust. Ultimately, batches running for more than 8 h could be analysed continuously without any contamination of the windows. For the PSD measurements, a standard LD instrument was used with a measuring range of 0.5/0.9-175 μm.As product fineness is monitored continuously in-stream, and virtually without delay, any changes in the fineness during classifier operation can be detected immediately. On the one hand, this opens up a new field for studies of classifier performance. On the other, immediate quality control of even very small batches is possible during the micronization process. The results demonstrate very clearly, for example, the importance of controlling the feed rate to the classifier. Therefore, fineness control by means of this in-line technique gives superior advantages for direct adjustment of the classifier speed.

    Notes: The precipitation of barium sulfate was investigated by photon correlation spectroscopic (PCS) measurements of the growing crystals combined with electrical conductivity measurements of the mother solution. Small silica seeds (36nm) were added to the solution. Therefore, heterogeneous nucleation did not take place on the walls and on the stirrer, which is usually the case, but on the seeds. Hence the growth of the crystals which had nucleated on the seeds could be studied by PCS. In order to avoid the ill-conditioned inversion of the measured raw data, the autocorrelation functions, a population balance model was used to calculate these functions with the help of a kinetic model taken from the literature. The measured an the calculated autocorrelation functions could coincide and adjustable parameters were found from a least-squares fit. The measurements revealed that nucleation is strongly enhanced by PMA-PVS (polymaleic acid-polyvinylsulfonic acid). However, a simple model which assumes langmuir adsorption of PMA-PVS on the crystal surface did not describe the kinetics very well. The nucleation rate in the absence of the additive was found to be J=1.3·1010 exp(-27/In2S) [m-3s-1], while the growth rate was G=2.6·10-8(S-1)2/3 S1/3 exp(-29/3 In S) [ms-1]. These results match results taken from the literature fairly well.

    Notes: During the spherical agglomeration process, a suspended solid is agglomerated by adding a binding liquid. First, mircoagglomerates or flocs are produced, which are compacted in the course of the process. Agglomerate size was evaluated by laser diffraction spectrometry, image analysis was used to determine the size and some adequately defined shape parameters calculated by Fourier analysis of the particle contour.The shape analysis confirms the visual observations; the compaction of the flocs is expressed by the corresponding change of the shape parameters. The influence of several process parameters on changes in agglomerate shape can be described quantitatively and help to gain an insight into agglomeration mechanisms. The particle size distributions determined by image analysis and laser diffraction spectrometry hardly differ for fairly spherical flocs or agglomerates. Concerning the size distribution of the irregular flocs, laser diffraction spectrometry measures larger particles than image analysis.

    Notes: Response of a phase Doppler system to irregularly shaped particles is examined and shown to deviate qualitatively as well as quantitatively from the spherical particles. Nevertheless, the measured phase distributions based on an ensemble of particles exhibit a high degree of order and simplicity. The experimental data and the stochastic modeling of the process have shown that the phase Doppler technique can be used successfully for in-situ sizing and velocimetry of irregular particles. In the case of irregular crystalline particles, mean size and standard deviation can be deduced without requiring any assumptions regarding the functional form of the size distribution. As opposed to other optical techniques, phase Doppler can be used, in principle, near the backscattering location, so that a single optical window would be employed for transmission of laser light and collection of the scattered signals. Furthermore, size measurements can be velocity-resolved, i.e. a size distribution can be associated with each bin of the velocity histogram.

    Notes: In this paper a reconstruction method is presented, which allows the calculation of three-dimensional temperature and velocity fields in an industrial furnace by measuring the propagation times of sound waves. Transceiver systems working in a coal fired power station and reconstructing two-dimensional fields are well known. Referring to these real conditions, the idea was to use two measurement planes situated over each other and projecting the fields in the volume between them. Some simulations show that weak inhomogeneous fields can be well reconstructed, whereas in the presence of turbulent flow and noise a reconstruction is critical.

    Notes: A tutorial review of diffraction tomography is given along with an overview of recent advances of this technique in borehole geophysics, ultrasonic imaging, and optical microscopy. First, the basic principles of diffraction tomography are presented. Then, we discuss a generalized inversion algorithm, valid for irregularly spaced data and a non-uniform background, and present reconstructions based on ultrasonic water tank data and underground georadar data. Next, we discuss a hybrid filtered backpropagation algorithm for ultrasonic and optical imaging. Quantitative images, based on experimental data, are presented of objects embedded in water or in biological tissue and probed by ultrasound, and of fibers embedded in an index matching liquid and probed by laser light.

    Notes: Flow agents are widely used in industry, such as the plastics and pharmaceutical industry, to promote the flow of cohesive powders. Few studies of the quantitative effects of the flow agents on the flow of the powder have been reported. In this communication the effect of silica flow agents on the flow of a plastic powder is studied by means of avalanching behaviour. The avalanching behaviour of the powder as modified by the silica flow agents is summarized using descriptive parameters based on the calculation of fractal dimensions in data space and phase-space strange attractors. The structure of the strange attractors are shown to be statistically self-similar and-effective descriptors of the change of rheology caused by the presence of the flow agents.

    Notes: Among the most important characteristic properties of disperse systems such as latices, pigments, ceramic materials or drug formulations are the particle size and the particle size distribution. To measure these quantities, several methods and measuring instruments based on different physical principles are available. These include turbidimetry, dynamic and static light scattering, electron microscopy with image analysis, ultra- and disc centrifugation, light diffraction and the electrical sensing zone method. All these measuring techniques are doubtless necessary because of the large product variety and the broad particle size range. However, some problems arise if different techniques are used and the results are compared uncritically without considering to the application range and the resolution of the methods. An extensive comparative test was therefore carried out using seven latices in the submicron range with defined monomodal, bimodal and hexamodal particle size distributions. The most important methods of determining average particle size values and particle size distributions were tested and compared. Of the methods to determine only average particle sizes, turbidimetry is the most efficient, followed by dynamic light scattering with cumulants evaluation. Static light scattering only yields accurate results for small particles with narrow particle size distributions. Of the methods to determine particle size distributions, ultracentrifugation and, somewhat less, disc centrifugation and electron microscopy with image analysis are the most efficient. Dynamic light scattering only yields reliable results in the case of small particles with narrow distribution curves. Light diffraction and the electrical sensing zone method are less suitable for the submicron range.

    Notes: The paper reports on the particle. sampling efficiency of the inlet system for the Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (TSI, Inc., St. Paul MN). Large particles are depleted from the sampled aerosol by two mechanisms: super-isokinetic sampling at the entrance of the inlet, and inertial impaction on the inner nozzle. A fluorometric technique was used to separately characterize these mechanisms. Numerical studies were also performed. The experimental results show that the inlet's overall efficiency drops from around 90% for 3 μm particles to less than 45% for particles larger than 10 gm. Several high efficiency inlets were developed and tested. These inlets provide higher sampling efficiencies, but reduce the instrument's sizing resolution. Measurements of 7.3 μm oleic acid particles with a high efficiency inlet showed a 5% spread in measured diameter at 50% count, while less than a 1076 spread was observed using the standard inlet. It was also found that the super-isokinetic condition reduces particle losses on the inner nozzle. The standard inlet is recommended for verifying test aerosol monodispersity. An alternative to the standard inlet is suggested for measurement of size distributions.

    Notes: Concerning the use of air classifiers with cut sizes in the micron range and lower, it is necessary to disperse the feed material properly in an air flow to avoid agglomerates larger than the desired cut size. Commonly used dispersing devices such as injectors use large amounts of air. To reduce the size and costs of the subsequent air classifiers, two new types of dispersing systems were developed, one design being related to a brush feeder and the other to a pin mill. Both apply mechanical rather than fluid mechanical forces in the dispersion process. The brush disperser achieves the same size distributions as the pin mill disperser with much less machinery. Its properties as a feeding and dispersing system are shown and its ability to disperse particles in the submicron range is confirmed by two independent particle size analysis systems: a new diffraction spectrometer and an impactor.

    Notes: The calibration of an optical particle counter (OPC) by means of the Aerodynamic Particle Sizer APS (TSI, Model 3310) was investigated. The pulse-height distribution and the aerodynamic size distribution were measured by parallel use of an OPC and the APS. A calibration curve was obtained by comparison of the two different cumulative distribution curves. First calibration results are presented for spherical particles (water droplets and glycerine droplets): A comparison of these results with Mie calculations and aerodynamic calibrations by means of sampling cyclones shows good agreement. Furthermore, measurements were carried out with non-spherical particles. Quartz dust was used for these measurements. In order to calibrate the OPC by means of the APS, the behaviour of both devices was investigated.

    Notes: The particle size distribution of crystalline solids has progressively become a key parameter in manufacturing processes, as important as chemical purity. Among the particle size determination and counting systems available on the market, very few offer the possibility of continuous in situ monitoring of the particle size evolution during crystallization. For this reason, much interest has been aroused by the appearance of the Par Tec 100, patented by Laser Sensor Technology [1, 2]. A study has been carried out in a stirred vessel to verify the precision and reproducibility of particle size measurement and elucidate the influence of experimental parameters on data accessible with this instrument. Optimum reproducibility has logically been achieved by fixing the highest possible cycle time and taking the mean of several cycles. Determinations with the Par Tec 100 are influenced variously, according to whether they relate to the total number of particles counted or to the mean size. Thus, the number of counts measured by a particle size probe largely depends on the operating conditions and more particularly on the hydrodynamic conditions, solvent, temperature and focal point position. Its dependence relative to the concentration of the solid in suspension is normal and linear for a solid and for a given monodisperse sample. To establish the relationship between the number of counts and the population density would therefore necessitate delicate calibration on a case-by-case basis. The mean size determined does not depend on suspension homogeneity, provided that the stirring speed is sufficient for a statistically significant total count. On the other hand, for a given sample, a displacement of the focal point can lead to considerable variations in the size determined. The optimal focal point position for small sizes is in fact highly sensitive. Lastly, the optimal position of the focal point is considerably dependent on the true size of the particles, which means that this counter is unsuitable for the precise analysis of a dispersed sample since each particle size class would require a different setting of the focal point. In addition, the sizes determined, irrespective of the products studied, appear to be underestimated for large particles and over estimated for small particles.

    Notes: Electrically active fibrous filters, that is fibrous filters whose fibres carry a permanent electric charge, are an increasingly popular alternative to conventional fibrous filters in applications where low pressure drop and high collection efficiencies are critical. The advantage of these materials is the additional collection efficiency, due to electrostatic mechanisms, that can be achieved without pressure drop increase. The efficiency of these materials can fall as they are loaded with aerosol particles, so it is necessary that proper account be taken of this process during use. A complete understanding of the mechanisms responsible for this reduction in efficiency has not yet been reached. An experimental study has been undertaken at Loughborough University of Technology investigating the loading behaviour of a mixed fibre type electrically active material. The experimental techniques used in this work and experimental findings with a range of aerosol particle sizes are reported here.

    Notes: The production of liquid sprays represents a key technology for a wide range of industrial proceses. Most applications currently use pressure or air-assisted atomization, resulting in the production of polydisperese sprays. Recent advances in experimental and numerical techniques for investigating liquid spraying processes, however, have enabled a closer examination of parameter optimization, leading to the conclusion that in may cases, a much narrower size distribution, or even a monodisperse spray, may exhibit many advantages. Currently monodisperse droplet generators, or drop-on-demand generators, do not meet this challenge of producing monodisperse sprays, primarily owing to the very low volume flow rate of liquid which is atomized. In the present work, a monodisperse sprya generator is introduced, which overcomes this difficulty for many applications.

    Notes: Measurements of droplet deformation during wall impingement were performed for ethanol droplets and water droplets with diameters ranging from 100 to 200 μm. The wall temperature is well above the Leidenfrost temperature of the droplet liquid. With monodisperse droplet streams and a special illumination technique, slow motion images of the phenomena can be obtained. Measurements with high temporal resolution below 1 μs are possible using a standard video camera. The experimental results are compared with numerical results, which were obtained by solving the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible fluids including surface tension effects. The fluids are treated with the volume-of-fluid method and the free surface is modeled according to the continuum-surface-force model. Numerical and experimental results show good agreement.

    Notes: ---The reactions of aryliminodimagnesium [ArN(MgBr)2, IDMg] with p′-substituted p-cyanobenzophenones, 1-cyano-9-fluorenone, o-, m- and p-dicyanobenzenes and o-, m- and p-nitrobenzonitriles were examined, and the relative yields of products were referred to the previous results of electron spin resonance studies. The products of condensation with carbonyl and nitro groups and of addition to cyano groups were formed. From the variations of the yields caused by the molar ratio of the magnesium reagent versus substrates and by the substituents of both reactants, the preferred groups were determined. The groups of p- and m-substrates are consistent with the position of highest density of free electrons in the anion radicals, whereas those of the o-substrates are inconsistent. The consistency indicates competition of functional groups reflecting the relative ability of single electron acceptance from the reagent, whereas the inconsistency is ascribed to cooperation of neighbouring groups for σ-complexation with the Mg atom of the reagent. The categories of competition and cooperation are discussed in relation to fundamental features and general governing factors proposed for the IDMg reactions of monofunctional substrates. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: Although the electronic contribution to the strength of a H-bond is unaffected by isotopic substitution, the heavier mass of deuterium compared with protium lowers some of the vibrational frequencies in the complex. The binding energy of the complex, which includes zero-point and thermal vibrational energies, can thus be altered by several tenths of a kcal mol-1 by H/D substitution. Ab initio calculations are used to analyze this phenomenon in a number of common organic functional groups that are prone to form H-bonds: hydroxyl, carboxyl and amide, both self-complexing as homodimers and with water molecules as partners. It is found that any site of D-substitution increases the complexation energy; however, the bridging sites show a stronger preference for D over H than do the non-bridging, or terminal, sites. Hence D-bonding can be considered to be stronger than H-bonding in these functional groups. Of the groups considered, the energetic preference for D over H is greater in the hydroxyl group, so deuterium would be expected to gravitate toward solvent water molecules in isotopic scrambling experiments. The increments in H-bonding energy resulting from each site of substitution are addititve in cases of multiple substitution. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The corresponding databases and programs (HYBOT) allow one to predict thermodynamic values for experimentally unknown equilibria, including also ionophore complexes with crown ethers or cryptands. Applications in QSAR involve the prediction of lipophilicity from any structure on the basis of only two variables, e.g. 234 systems are described this way with a correlation coefficient r=0·96.     Notes: ---The cooperative nature of non-covalent interactions which give rise to inclusion complexes involving cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene), 14+, and related cyclophane derivatives, 24+-44+, with substituted 1,4-phenyl and 4,4′-biphenyl guests has been studied by spectroscopic techniques and ab initio and semiempirical molecular orbital methods. Inclusion complex formation and stability are primarily determined by the combination of two main interaction modes involving aromatic stacking of the guest within the cyclophane cavity and external interactions between guest side arms and the exterior of the cyclophane. A balance between cavity and external forces results in supramolecular association and is shown to change depending upon the functionality and substitution of the guest. Cavity binding was probed using 1,4-phenyl and 4,4′-biphenyl guests, where for the 1,4-phenyl guests the primary basis for energy stabilization with 14+ is found to be short-range stabilizing electrostatic forces complemented by small amounts of polarizability and charge-transfer. In contrast, the cavity binding between substituted 4,4′-biphenyl guests and 14+ is determined by almost equal contributions of polarizability and electrostatics. The effect of solvent is shown to have only a small effect on the computed geometry of 14+ complexes, but its impact upon binding energies is substantial. The first solvation shell of the cyclophanes is computationally approximated by 12 acetonitriles and satisfies the requirements of the 16 relatively acidic protons on the bipyridinium groups. Good correlations between the computed (with solv ation) and experimental 14+ binding energies are found. The degree of linear correlation improves substantially when the comparison between computed and experimentally observed binding energies is restricted to structurally similar (number of aromatic rings, number of substituents and position of substitution) molecular guests. Furthermore, computed molecular properties, such as polarizability, maximum hardness, softness and electronegativity of the isolated guests, correlate well with 14+ binding energies based upon the same requirement of guest similarity. The non-covalent forces associated with the external cyclophane interactions were studied with guest molecules built from symmetrical 1,4-extensions of hydroquinone composed of aliphatic or ethyleneoxy side arms. In particular, side arm length and functionality, and the position and type of heteroatoms along the chain, were systematically varied to define the external interactions between the guest side arms and different host cyclophanes. Specifically, the ethyleneoxy linkages are shown to provide a large chelate and cooperative effect which direct the binding with 14+. In order to probe further the special geometric and electronic character of 14+, we have synthesized and tested a new supramolecular host, 24+, similar to 14+ but where a pentacycloundecane unit replaces one of the xylyl groups. Both experimental and computed data on the new host emphasize the ideal geometry and electronic nature of the 14+ molecular receptor for aromatic guests. The inclusion complexes discussed in this paper are important not only because they, or similar entities, are the main components of many rotaxanes, catenanes and other switchable molecules, but because the intermolecular interactions involved, such as electrostatics, polarizability and charge-transfer, are ubiquitous in supramolecular chemistry. The information reported on the specific interactions involving the 14+-44+ molecular receptors with substituted aromatic guests can also be extended by analogy to many systems of broad interest. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The compounds studied display in CDCl3 a preferred flattened chair-chair conformation. This bicycle conformation is similar to that found for 2 in the crystal state.     Notes: Photo-induced electron donor-acceptor reactions between 1-cyanonaphthalene (CNN) and norbornadiene (N) generate products of several structure types. Methanol adducts (1-3) formed in polar solvents are rationalized via the radical cation, N+·, and stereospecific (exo-) nucleophilic attack by methanol. In less polar solvents, CNN and N form [2 + 2]-cycloadducts, exclusively on the exo-face of N. In non-polar solvents containing methanol, CNN, N and methanol combine to form 1:1:1 adducts, containing the sensitizer on the endo- and the methoxy groups on the exo-face. The formation of these products is rationalized via the trapping of encounter complexes of different geometries. Any rearrangement of the norbornenyl system can be eliminated, since neither tricyclyl nor 7-methoxynorbornenyl structures are formed.     Notes: Semiempirical, ab initio and DFT investigations on the mechanism of the Diels-Alder reactions of a set of masked dienes (ring-fused dienes), viz. o-quinodimethane, anthracene and α-vinylnaphthalene, with ethylene, and reactions of α-vinylnaphthalene with maleic anhydride and p-benzoquinone were performed with a view to understanding the role of masking factors on the activation and reaction energies. The reactions were found to occur in a concerted fashion through synchronous transition states (TSs) in the first two reactions and through asynchronous TS in the other case. Of the compounds studied, o-quinodimethane is the most reactive diene both in a kinetic and a thermodynamic sense. α-Vinylnaphthalene reacts faster with maleic anhydride than p-benzoquinone, as expected, and two possible stereoselective TSs, one endo and the other exo, have been located for the reactions of α-vinylnaphthalene with the above dienophiles. Calculations show that the relative gain or loss of aromatic stabilization of the benzonoid ring in the transition state and in the product seems to play a major role in the kinetic and thermodynamic control of these reactions. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: Infrared spectra of all isomers of polymethyl-substituted benzoic acids were recorded in the carbonyl and hydroxyl regions in tetrachloromethane at various concentrations and interpreted in terms of conformation. According to a plot of ν(C=O) of the monomeric form vs Hammett substituent constants σ, these compounds may be classified into two classes. Derivatives with none or only one methyl group in the ortho position are concluded to exist in an equilibrium of two planar conformations, unless the equilibrium is degenerate. Derivatives with two ortho-situated methyl groups are concluded to take up one non-planar conformation. These findings are supported by the shape of the hydroxyl and carbonyl bands, which are unsymmetrical in the former class, although they could not be reliably separated into bands pertinent to the individual conformers. This conclusion is at variance with the common interpretation which has invariably ascribed to these and similar ortho derivatives non-planar conformations with a variable torsional angle. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: Barrier heights for P - C bond homolysis in P-hydroxy-P-methyl-P,P-dioxophosphoranyl and P,P,P-trihydroxy-P-methylphosphoranyl were calculated using well correlated levels of electronic structure theory. The best estimate for the difference in barriers between the two indicates that homolysis is more facile for P,P,P-trihydroxy-P-methylphosphoranyl by roughly 9 kcal mol-1. This result suggests that bacterial pathways leading to P - C bond cleavage in organophosphonate derivatives will preferentially proceed via initial one-electron reduction of substrates rather than oxidation. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: The peculiarities of [8+2] cycloaddition reactions of indolizines with dienophiles are reviewed. Quantum chemical SINDO1, AM1 and ab initio calculations of transition states were performed for [8+2] cycloaddition reactions of indolizine and 6-nitroindolizine with a series of alkenes with donor and acceptor groups. The calculations predict a dipolar cycloaddition mechanism (electrophilic addition and ring closure) for reactions of indolizine and 6-nitroindolizine with nitroethylene. For the reaction of 6-nitroindolizine with N,N-dimethylaminoethylene, the predicted mechanism corresponds to a previously unknown ‘inverse’ dipolar cycloaddition (nucleophilic addition and ring closure). © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: Gas-phase nucleophilic substitution reactions of Y-benzyl chlorides with X-phenoxide and X-thiophenoxide nucleophiles were investigated theoretically using the PM3 semi-empirical MO method. The Leffler-Grunwald rate-equilibrium and Brønsted correlations predict that the degree of bond formation in the transition state (TS) is approximately 45 and 40% on the reaction coordinate for the phenoxides and thiophenoxides, respectively. For a weaker nucleophile, a later TS is obtained with an increased bond making and breaking. The variation of the TS structure with substituents in the nucleophile is thermodynamically controlled and is well correlated by rate-equilibrium relationships. In contrast, the TS variation (a tighter TS) with substituent (for a stronger acceptor Y) in the substrate is dependent only on variations of the intrinsic barrier and so cannot be correlated by such thermodynamically based rate-equilibrium relationships. The gas phase ρX and ρY values are much greater in magnitude than those in solution. A similar gas-phase theoretical cross-interaction constant, ρXY (ca -0.60), is obtained for both phenoxides and thiophenoxides, which is in good agreement with the experimental value (-0.62) for the thiophenoxide reactions in MeOH at 20.0 °C. The oxy and sulfur anion bases lead to a similar TS structure, but a lower reactivity for the former is due to a greater endothermicity of the reaction. A relatively wide range variation of the reaction energies, ΔG°, can be ascribed to the loss of resonance stabilization of anion nucleophiles upon product formation. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
