Notes: Abstract The characteristic features of the conductance of a tunneling contact, formed by a microscope tip and an Au/YBCO sandwich, are investigated with the aid of a scanning tunneling microscope. It is shown that there exist three types of dependences of the conductance of the structure on the applied voltage, which are distinguished by the position of the characteristic features on the voltage axis. It is established that this difference is due to the local characteristics of the proximity effect in gold films on a high-T c superconductor surface. It is concluded that the transmittance of the YBCO/Au boundary is spatially strongly nonuniform.

Notes: Abstract Quantum fluctuations of the phases of the order parameter in two-dimensional arrays of mesoscopic Josephson junctions and their effect on the destruction of superconductivity in the system are investigated by means of a quantum-cosine model that is free of the incorrect application of the phase operator. The proposed model employs trigonometric phase operators and makes it possible to study arrays of small superconducting granules, pores containing superfluid helium, or Josephson junctions in which the average number of particles n 0 (effective bosons, He atoms, and so on) is small, and the standard approach employing the phase operator and the particle number operator as conjugate operators is inapplicable. There is a large difference in the phase diagrams between arrays of macroscopic and mesoscopic objects for n 0〈5 and U〈J (U is the characteristic interaction energy of the particles per granule and J is the Josephson coupling constant). Re-entrant superconductivity phenomena are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The temperature dependences of the anisotropy of the resistance in two single crystals of the system TmBa2Cu3Ox with oxygen indices x=6.71 and 6.47 are analyzed from the standpoint of the applicability of Abrikosov’s theory [Physica C 253, 53 (1996)]. It is shown that the agreement between theory and experiment improves substantially if in approximating the data, besides resonance tunneling, allowance is made for the contribution of the ordinary tunneling conductivity.

Notes: Abstract We report measurements of the temperature dependence of the amplitude of phase-periodic conductance oscillations in disordered (diffusive) normal metal (Ag) structures attached to a superconducting (Pb) wire at two points. The oscillation amplitude exceeds the value of e 2/h by orders of magnitude and reaches its maximum at a temperature corresponding to the Thouless energy. The results support the recent theory of Nazarov and Stoof, [Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 823 (1996)], which takes into account the characteristic energy dependence of the change in the diffusion coefficient of quasiparticles in a normal conductor due to Andreev reflections. The line shape of the oscillations as a function of the superconducting phase difference is found to be extremely sensitive to the quality of N/S interfaces and shows hysteretic behavior in interferometers with specially prepared clean interfaces.

Notes: Abstract An experimental investigation is made of the subharmonic Shapiro steps observed on the I-V curves of high-T c superconductor Josephson junctions and on the bias-voltage dependences of the rf noise and detector response when the junctions are subjected to external submillimeter radiation. Structures of this type are ordinarily described by a nonsinusoidal current-phase relation, which is why subharmonic steps appear. Numerical modeling of the processes occurring in a Josephson junction by means of a simple current-phase relation, as in the case of an SNS junction, gives good agreement with experiment. The width of the characteristic Josephson generation line of the junction was estimated on the basis of the noise dependences and the selective detector response. The width can be explained by taking into account the shot noise of the tunneling component of the conductivity. A model of the conductivity of a high-T c superconductor Josephson junction, consisting of a tunnel junction with microshorts possessing metallic conductivity, is discussed.

Notes: Abstract In NdN and SdS nanostructures, anomalous ground states with a non-integer average number of electrons in the quantum dots d occur. These states correspond to pair or single-electron superconductivity and are separated from states with a definite (integer) number of electrons by, as a rule, second-order phase transitions. The characteristic features of the pair and single-electron superconducting Josephson current in SdS are discussed.

Notes: Abstract A mesoscopic S/N/S structure is studied theoretically. It is shown that a Josephson effect can occur in the structure even if the distance between the superconductors is much larger than the correlation length ξ N(T) and the Josephson coupling is negligibly weak. This effect arises if an additional current I flows along the normal conductor.

Notes: Abstract We reconsider the Berezinski $$\overset{\lower0.5em\hbox{$\smash{\scriptscriptstyle\smile}$}}{l} $$ -Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition to an insulating state in Coulomb-dominated Josephson junction arrays. We show that the previously predicted picture of the Cooper-pair BKT transition at T=T 2 is valid only under the condition that T 2 is considerably below the parity-effect temperature T*≈0.1Δ, and that even in that case it is not a rigorous phase transition but only a crossover, whereas the real phase transition takes place at T 1=T 2/4. Our theory is in agreement with available experimental data on Coulomb-dominated Josephson arrays and also sheds some light on the origin of the unusual reentrant temperature dependence of the resistivity in an array with a nearly critical ratio E C /E J .

Notes: Abstract The electric and magnetic fields arising during uniform motion of a vortex lattice in a magnetic field oriented parallel to the conducting layers are calculated in an exactly solvable model. For low temperatures and high velocities of the lattice, features due to the excitation of plasma oscillations of the superconducting electrons appear in the current-voltage characteristic. Peaks associated with plasmon excitation and the Cherenkov effect are present in the radiation spectrum.

Notes: Abstract Normal (N) metallic (Ag) mesoscopic conductors with two superconducting (S) faces (Al), arranged mirror-symmetrically relative to the streamlines of the current, periodically switch into the normal state as the superconducting phase difference Δϕ between the NS boundaries approaches the values Δϕ =(2n+1)π, n=0,1,2,..., irrespective of temperature and applied voltage. For Δϕ =2nπ and low applied voltages the conductance passes through a maximum and approaches the normal value as temperature decreases (reentrance). As the voltage subsequently increases, the conductance increases and passes through a maximum. As the phase difference moves away from the values Δϕ=2nπ, the maxima shift in the direction of low temperatures and voltages. The latter result shows unequivocally that in our metal structures it is necessary to take into account the next-order corrections to the “weak” proximity effect approximation.

Notes: Abstract An experimental study of single-soliton dynamics in a ring-shaped Josephson junction is reported. An externally applied magnetic field H forms a harmonic potential for a soliton in the ring. The revolution of the soliton in the junction leads to a potential-induced emission of plasma waves, which give rise to a resonance at a certain soliton velocity. This behavior agrees with numerical simulations, which indicate locking of the soliton to the radiation frequency. Good agreement between the experiment, kinematic model, and numerical simulations is found.

Notes: Abstract The thermodynamic and transport properties of normal disordered conductors are strongly influenced by the proximity of a superconductor. A cooperation between mesoscopic coherence and Andreev scattering of particles from the superconductor generates new types of interference phenomena. A field theoretic approach is introduced which is capable of exploring both the averaged properties and mesoscopic fluctuations of superconductor/normal-metal systems. As an example the method is applied to the study of the level statistics of a SNS junction.

Notes: Abstract It was observed that a microwave field induces constant differential resistance steps, close in magnitude to the reciprocal of the conductance quantum h/2e 2, in the current-voltage characteristics (IVCs) of layered structures with an intrinsic Josephson effect under conditions of transport in a direction perpendicular to the layers. A qualitative explanation of this result is proposed.

Notes: Abstract The flux noise in Josephson junction arrays is studied in the critical regime above the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. In proximity-coupled arrays a local Ohmic damping for the phases is relevant, giving rise to anomalous vortex diffusion and a dynamic scaling of the flux noise in the critical region. The flux noise exhibits a crossover from white to 1/f noise at a frequency ωξ∝ξ−z with a dynamic exponent z=2.

Notes: Abstract The anomalous proximity effect between a d-wave superconductor and a thin disordered normal layer is studied theoretically in the framework of Eilenberger equations. It is shown that disorder of the quasiparticle reflection from this thin layer leads to the formation of an s-wave component localized near the boundary. The angular and spatial structure of the pair potential near the interface is studied.

Notes: Abstract We report a study of the temperature dependence, down to 30 mK, of the magnetoresistance of Cd-Sb alloy in the insulating phase obtained by annealing the quenched metallic superconducting ( T c ≈4.5 K) phase of the alloy. Even though the sample in this state is no longer superconducting, the observed negative magnetoresistance points to single-particle tunneling in the presence of a superconducting gap in the spectrum. At magnetic fields B〈T the ratio α(T,B)=R(T,B)/R(T,B=4 T)is found to be maximum at a temperature of about 0.1 K. This behavior indicates a change of the conductivity mechanism from single-particle tunneling to incoherent two-particle tunneling as the temperature decreases.

Notes: Abstract Focused ion beam (FIB) and ion milling techniques are developed for the fabrication of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+1d (Bi-2212) stacked junctions with in-plane size L ab ranging from several microns down to the submicron scale without degradation of superconducting transition temperature T c. It is found that the behavior of submicron junctions (L ab〈1 µm) is quite different from that of larger ones. The critical current density is considerably suppressed, the hysteresis and multibranched structure of the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics are eliminated, and a periodic structure of current peaks appears reproducibly on the I-V curves at low temperatures. The period ΔV of the structure is consistent with the Coulomb charging energy of a single pair, ΔV=e/C, where C is the effective capacitance of the stack. It is considered that this behavior originates from the Coulomb blockade of the intrinsic Josephson tunneling in submicron Bi-2212 stacks.

Notes: Abstract The current-voltage characteristics (IVCs) of a layered superconductor with singlet d pairing at low temperatures are calculated in the internal Josephson effect (IJE) regime. Coherent electron tunneling between layers is assumed. A finite resistance of the superconductor in the resistive state arises because of quasiparticle transitions through the superconducting gap near nodes. Because of charge effects the interaction of the Josephson junctions formed by the layers does not lead to substantial differences in the shapes of different branches of the IVCs. The model describes the basic qualitative features of the effect in high-temperature superconductors for voltages which are low compared with the amplitude of the superconducting gap.

Notes: Abstract The effect of a magnetic field H⊥(ab) on the transverse current-voltage characteristics (IVCs) of the mixed state of a single crystal of the layered superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy (BSCCO) is investigated. It is established that in a wide range of temperatures and fields above the irreversibility line the initial part of the IVC is described by the law V∝I γ with γ≃1. As the current increases further, this law is replaced by a section where V∝exp(I). It is established that the multivalued, multibranch characteristics, interpreted as a manifestation of an internal Josephson effect, do not change appreciably when the crystal passes into a state with nonzero linear resistance. The character of the dependence of the characteristic switching current on the first resistive branch, I J (H,T), is determined.

Notes: Abstract We have studied the characteristics of Shapiro steps in DC-SQUIDs and parallel Josephson junction arrays by means of numerical circuit simulation within the RCSJ model. Particular interest was dedicated to the occurence of fractional (subharmonic) steps, looking for possible relations to recent observations of this effect in high-TC junctions. Besides this, some new, pecliar effects in the dependence of step height vs. RF amplitude have been found, that correspond to characteristics measured on high-TC junctions and SQUIDs. The results can be useful for characterizing experimental Josephson junctions and circuits by studying dependencies of Shapiro steps.

Notes: Abstract Properties of wide superconducting tin films in the resistive current state with phase slippage have been studied experimentally. We have observed a region of excess conductivity on the current-voltage characteristics of the samples. Experimental results were discussed in view of the theory establishing the relationship between an interference term of the total current and excess current in weak superconductors. We derived the equation to evaluate the inelastic scattering time of superconductor τ E using the excess current of wide films with phase slippage. Our τ E values are in a good agreement with those obtained by other methods.

Notes: Abstract The paper is devoted to the determination of processes in the two-dimensional Josephson junction via numerical solution of 2+1 dimensional sine-Gordon equation (sGe) with suitably chosen boundary conditions. There is adopted an assumption that the normal derivative of the phase order parameter on a border of a junction is given by the surface current distribution on superconductive electrodes. This current distribution can be determined exactly since it makes a linear problem even in a presence of an external magnetic field although the surface current distribution is not uniform and can be singular. A rectangular junction is discussed as an example.

Notes: Abstract The quasiparticle tunneling (QPT) in YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO), Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (BSCCO), Nd1.85Ce0.15CuOx (NCCO) and La1.85Sr0.15CuO4−δ (LSCO) grain boundary Josephson junctions (GBJs) has been studied. At voltages above the gap voltage V9, the measured conductance vs. voltage, G(V), curves show a temperature independent parabolic shape allowing the determination of the effective height and thickness of the insulating grain boundary barrier. At |V|〈Vg, the G(V)-curves are well fitted by a BCS density of states and temperature dependence of the energy gap, if a large broadening parameter Γ is assumed for the gap. The large Γ value most likely is related to the high density of localized states within the grain boundary barrier. Furthermore, a zero-bias conductance anomaly is observed which can be analyzed in terms of spin-flip and Kondo-type scattering at the interface (Anderson-Appelbaum model).

Notes: Abstract Experiments of persistent photoinduced enhancement of the Josephson effect in YBaCuO junctions are reviewed in this paper. These experiments show that the critical current and the conductivity of these Josephson junctions can be increased after illumination. This effect is due to photodoping of the oxygen depleted region in the weak link.

Notes: Abstract A new approach to the fabrication of a SrTiO3 bicrystal substrate based on the technology of growing by floating zone method natural SrTiO3 bicrystals with misorientation angles 24° and 37° has been developed. Thin film YBCO Josephson junctions and dc SQUIDs on SrTiO3 bicrystal substrates were fabricated and studdied at T=77 K. A critical current density jc and IcRn product for the junctions with misorientation angle α=24° were close to 2×104 A/cm2 and 190÷260 μV respectively, while for α=37° it were found that jc≈2×103 A/cm2 and IcRn≈90÷120 μV. The dc SQUIDs were made with typical inductances 20÷80 pH, critical currents of 20÷150 μA and resulting voltage modulation 10÷40 μV. Noise measurements performed at 77 K revealed low 1/f noise with cut-off frequency about 10 Hz.

Notes: Abstract We use a detailed microscopic analysis to study electron transport in normal diffusive conductors in the presence of proximity induced superconducting correlation. In the case of transparent barriers, superconducting correlations and electrical field can penetrate causing a whole range of novel nonequilibrium effects. These effects are explained by the introduction of a second, correlated density of states. Our results are fully consistent with recent experimental findings.

Notes: Abstract We have investigated a change of electrical properties of YBa2Cu3O7−δ/metal point contact immediately after its preparation depending on time, temperature as well as external bias voltage. The increase of the point contact differential resistance in time was experimentally observed at temperature above 200 K even if no external bias voltage was applied. The low external bias voltage considerably influences the time increase of the differential resistance indicating an important role of oxygen diffusion. It is shown on differential characteristics that for Au, In the parameters of tunneling barrier such as the average height and width are constant in time whereas for Al, Pb an evolution of the tunneling barrier was observed because of oxidation of Al and Pb. Applying of higher bias voltage (up to 1 V) enables the transport of oxygen even below 200 K (down to 4.2 K) and changes the electrical properties of YBCO/metal point contact interface. The differential characteristics change their behaviour from that typical for NIS contact with strong tunneling barrier to NS contact with a high transparency of the interface. All the above changes are reversible upon changing the bias voltage polarity.

Notes: Abstract Recent experiments on the proximity induced supercurrent in mesoscopic normal wires revealed a surprising temperature dependence. They suggest clean-limit behavior although the wires are strongly disordered. We demonstrate that this unexpected scaling is actually contained in the conventional description of diffusive superconductors and find excellent ggreement with the experimental results. In addition we propose a SQUID-like proximity structure for further experimental investigations of the effects in question.

Notes: Abstract The current-voltage characteristics (IVCs) of YBa2Cu3O7−x/PrBa2Cu3O7−x/YBa2Cu3O7−x sandwich junctions of dimensions 14×20 μm2 at the temperatures below 300 K were studied. A few types of pecularities (as sudden junction conductance increase, spreading of resistance, voltage jumps, regions of negative differential resistance, sample voltage polarity change at increasing positive bias current) were observed in IVCs of the sandwich junctions at high bias current (above 15 mA). We found out that all these effects are connected with sample overheating by the bias current and the shape of the temperature dependence of the junction resistance.

Notes: Abstract Experimental results for novel superconductor/semiconductor hybrid systems are presented. The junctions have a step-like geometry, employing two Nb electrodes which are evaporated onto a step that is etched in InAs. Such a geometry allows one to fabricate short weak links (approximately 200nm) as well as to realize a variety of heterostructure potential profiles along the channel between the superconducting electrodes, since this channel is oriented parallel to the growth direction of the heterostructure. Different semiconductor heterostructures, such as low p-doped InAs, whose native surface inversion layer has the character of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), or npn-InAs heterostructures, where th 2DEG of a thin (150nm) p-layer is sandwiched between two n-InAs layers, are used. By measuring the currentvoltage characteristics at 4.2K, supercurrents, subharmonic gap structures, as well as excess currents, are observed.

Notes: Abstract We fabricated and tested samples consisting of two long stacked Josephson junctions with direct access to the intermediate electrode, whose thickness is smaller than London penetration depth λ L . The electrodes are patterned so that the junctions can be independently biased in the overlap configuration. We report the observation of fluxon-antifluxon phase-locked states in zero external magnetic field and the measurements concerning the range of stability of such states as a function of the bias currents. There is strong evidence for the existence of fluxon-antifluxon pairs even when one of the two junctions is biased on the McCumber curve. We also report the observation of several mutually phase-locked states induced by large rf signals (but not phase-locked to the rf field), that can be interpreted as fluxon-antifluxon oscillating in the stack.

Notes: Abstract A Josephson junction Nb/Si/Nb with a 10 nm thick amorphous silicon barrier is studied. The upper electrode contains a 2 nm thick sublayer of amorphous phase adjacent to the barrier, as revealed by cross-sectional TEM. Thus, the junction can be considered as a S-I-N-S system with the N layer represented by amorphous niobium. Peculiarities in the I–V and Δ(T) dependencies are observed and explained as a consequence of a proximity effect present in the upper electrode.

Notes: Abstract We report on the technology and basic electrical properties of ten-fold stacked Nb/Si/Nb Josephson junction (JJ). The problem of making a large number of stacked JJs with identical properties was solved by metallic superlattice preparation technology. The uniformity of Si barriers thickness was examined by low angle X-ray diffraction and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy. To prevent pinholes in the Si barriers the Nb/Si superlattice was sputtered at the regime at which smoothing of interfacial roughness occurs. The stacked junction exhibit both ac and dc Josephson effects. In the Ic(B) diffraction pattern there is an extra periodicity of about 2–3 G in addition to a larger period of about 21 G.

Notes: Abstract The constant voltage steps generated by a slightly damped Josephson junction driven by short rectangular current pulses are studied within the RSJ model for a broad range of dc and rf bias. The height of the rf-induced steps strongly depends on model parameters but always largely exceeds that of a sinusoidally driven junction. The dynamical response of the junction is also briefly analyzed.

Notes: Abstract Tunneling structure Nb/NbOx/Al/AlOx/Nb with thin barrier in the Nb/NbOx/Al junction and 4–6 nm thick Al interlayer was prepared and experimentally studied. Pair breaking at the tunneling processes in one junction produces nonequilibrium state of quasiparticle density in Al interlayer and consequently nonequilibrium tunneling processes in the whole structure. All joined effects, namely gap voltage suppression, presence of negative differential resistance at gap voltage and effects induced by applying of microwave radiation are similar to those observed on stacked Nb/Al/AlOx/Nb tunnel junction current-voltage characteristics. Results may be used for the interpretation of behavior of high current density SNS or SIS type multilayers of low and high temperature superconductor structures.

Notes: Abstract We prepared ion beam modified microbridges based on thin sputtered or laser ablated YBCO films on SrTiO3 substrates. The microbridges with a width of 10 μm were irradiated through slits in a 700 nm thick double layer resist mask. In our experiments we used O+ ions with an ion energy of 30 keV or 100 keV varying the dose between 1013 ions·cm−2 and 1014 ions·cm−2. We investigated the influence of film thickness and slit width on the superconducting properties of these junctions. We show the temperature dependence of the junctions properties on microwave radiation or external magnetic fields.

Notes: Abstract The high temperature superconductors form natural superconducting multilayers where adjacent superconducting layers are weakly coupled by the Josephson effect. As a consequence, single crystals act intrinsically as vertical stacks of Josephson junctions. At present, intrinsic Josephson junctions are fabricated and investigated by several groups. There has been considerable progress both in production of high quality junctions and in theoretical understanding of the intrinsic Josephson effect. In this paper the basic physics of intrinsic Josephson junctions is outlined. Some examples of the present status of research are given.

Notes: Abstract The results of measurements of the H-modulated microwave absorption of of YBa2Cu3O7 ceramic in the transition temperature region and with fields in the range 0–10 kOe are presented. They give clear evidence of the weak-link inter-grain nature of the gross part of the dissipation and support the idea of stronger links, or microbridges of a more intrinsic species, involved in the high-field intra-grain absorption component. A semiquantitative analysis of the absorption process is suggested and applied to the derivative spectra in the T-swept form (at fixed external field). It allows to deduce information about Tc, the superconductive coupling, and the H- and T-dependences of the critical currents involved in the inter- and intra-grain regions. When applied to YBa2Cu3O7 powders, obtained by finely grinding a ceramic pellet, it gives also evidence of a generalized suppression of coupling induced by the grinding process

Notes: Abstract Microwave properties of highly oriented thin YBCO films deposited on YSZ and LaAlO3 substrates were investigated at 3 GHz and 4.3 GHz using microstrip resonator technique. The microwave characteristics of the films on YSZ substrates were close to those of a medium containing weak links and were interpreted in the coupled grain model approximation. The YBCO films on LaAlO3 substrates demonstrated very good microwave properties and could be considered at least as samples with “strong” weak links. Unloaded Q-factor of microstrip resonators prepared from such films and Cu ground plane reached 3000 at 77 K.

Notes: Abstract On the base of a rigorous theoretical model the output characteristics of a RF double SQUID for use as an instrument for delicate measurements are computed, and the two RF pump modes (external and autodyne) are optimized from the output signal level point of view. Then, a two-dimensional thermal activation model is applied for the analysis of the intrinsic noise influence on the output performances of such a device. A theoretical estimation for the flux noise spectral densities at low frequencies is given and an optimization from the signal-to-noise ratio and double SQUID flux coupling points of view is also made. Showing the superiority of this novel RF pumped SQUID configuration over the traditional one, both these theoretical approaches gave results that are in a very good agreement with the existed experimental data.

Notes: Abstract This paper proposes a quantum nondemolition measurement of the photon number in a Josephson-junction cavity. Under a current-biased Josephson junction with small capacitance, the Josephson phase fluctuates quantum-mechanically around its classical value due to the charging effect, and it couples to the photons in the junction cavity nonlinearly, which is necessary for the quantum nondemolition measurement. We show that the photon number in the junction cavity can be nondestructively measured by detecting the fluctuation of Josephson supercurrent through the junction.

Notes: Abstract In the investigation of the transfer function (field sensitivity) of a weak link ultra-low capacity RF-SQUID, there is a problem which concerns the response of the quantum nonlinear oscillator formed by the geometrical inductance of the superconducting ring, the Josephson inductance and the weak link capacity, to the external magnetic flux. In order to account for the influence of the small quantum charge fluctuation on the Josephson potential, a phenomenological approach is proposed, which leads to a phase shift consisting of two additives. The first additive is a constant depending on the weak link parameters, and the second is linear in the external magnetic flux. The influence of the quantum fluctuation is effectively reduced to increasing the period of the current-phase relation for the RF-SQUID in the external magnetic flux, which leads to a reduction of the response of such a quantum SQUID in comparison with the usual RF SQUID.

Notes: Abstract Dynamics of a single fluxon in an annular Josephson junction is studied in the presence of an externally applied magnetic field H. Due to the interaction of the fluxon with the radial field component, the fluxon moves in a potential well which height is proportional to H. Several spectacular features of fluxon dynamics analogous to the motion of a particle in a washboard potential are clearly observed experimentally. Periodic revolutions of the fluxon in the junction lead to a potential induced emission of plasma waves. These waves are indicated by a resonance at a certain fluxon velocity which depends on the junction length. Good agreement between experiment, theoretical model and numerical simulations is found.

Notes: Abstract We report tunneling measurements of the electron-doped superconductor Nd1.85Ce0.15Cu04−gd using break junctions. The observed finest gap structure is well expressed by the BCS density of states with the energy gap of Δ = 6.1 meV and a very small broadening parameter, having the ratio 2Δ/kBTc = 8.2 with Tc = 17.3 K. These features are similar to our tunneling results for the hole-doped cuprate superconductors. Therefore we find no essential difference in the gap structure, in spite of a common believing of the pairingsymmetry difference between them.

Notes: Abstract YBa2Cu3O7−δ/(Y1−xPrx)Ba2Cu3O7−δ multilayers have been used to probe coupling through (Y1−x:Prx)Ba2Cu3O7−δ alloys. We observe that the coupling between ultrathin YBa2Cu3O7−δ layers, 12 or 24 Å thick, survives through several hundred Å of (Y1−xPrx)Ba2Cu3O7−δ with x=0.4 and 0.55. Tc versus the thickness of the spacer-alloy, and activation energies for flux motion, with fields parallel and perpendicular to the c-axis, have been used to probe this long range coupling. All these experiments point to an unusually large coupling length for these two alloy compositions. In the x=0.55 case this result is particularly surprising since the alloy material display a semiconducting behaviour for this composition. Tc measurements, activation energies, and a study of the vortex dynamics in these coupled multilayers is presented along with new results obtained on a series of multilayers built with a more insulating alloy, x=0.7.

Notes: Abstract The superconducting energy gap distribution of poly crystalline HgBa2CuO4+δ samples of differing oxygen doping levels (Tc = 94 K and Tc = 96 K) is determined by scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) using a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM). From histograms of energy gap values the presence of two distinct energy gaps is inferred (Δ1=8.5±1.6meV and Δ2=15.1±1.4meV). We attribute the different gaps to different crystallographic faces, implying a non-BCS electron-electron pairing mechanism.

Notes: Abstract We present local probe tunneling spectroscopy of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ single crystals for different oxygen concentrations, from optimally doped (Tc=92.2 K) to highly overdoped (Tc=56.0 K) phases. With increasing oxygen overdoping, the superconducting gap (Δp) is reduced and the dip structure beyond Δp at negative sample bias1 shifts toward the Fermi energy. Apart from the shift in energy of these features, the generic shape of the tunneling spectra remains unchanged. The gap roughly scales with Tc, and 2Δp/kBTc stays large even in the highly overdoped phase. We also present preliminary results on the temperature dependence of the tunneling spectra. They are consistent with a gap that is largely independent on temperature up to the vicinity of Tc

Notes: Abstract The pairing state of the cuprate superconductors is a key issue in understanding experiments and in clarifying possible mechanisms. A wide range of experiments now show that the gap function is predominantly $$d_{x^2 - y^2 }$$ in character. Here we discuss the relevant experiments, especially focusing on those which provide constraints on possible mixed pairing states, such as s+d and s+id.

Notes: Abstract Very pure YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) single crystals grown in BaZrO3 crucibles are studied in the as-grown and the oxidized state by scanning force (SFM), friction force (FFM) and scanning tunneling microscopies (STM). The images show clean terraces with step-heights of one unit cell along YBCO(001), i.e. 1.2 nm. Only close to step edges is material contrast observed by FFM indicating traces af flux. Some crystal surfaces exhibit over-layer features, such as star-like, ribbon-like and checkerboard-like structures, which exhibit friction contrast implying the presence of different materials on the surface. Tunneling spectroscopy at 4.7 K in high vacuum reveals a superconducting energy gap of 2Δ ≈ 26 me V.

Notes: Abstract Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy (STS) measurements have been carried out on the high Tc superconductor (HTS) YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO). Using very high quality single crystals as well as hard tips, we obtained differential conductance spectra which showed various conductance features in agreement with other spectroscopic techniques. The reproducibility of our spectra allowed us to map for the first time the vortex lattice on a HTS using a STS technique1. The vortices are arranged in a short range order oblique lattice, while the cores of the flux lines show an anisotropic shape. These observations can be related to the in-plane anisotropy of YBCO.

Notes: Abstract Measurements of the field-modulated critical currents of cuprate thin film microbridges on tricrystal substrates are reported. Two central peaks of equal height are observed in the field-dependent critical currents of YBCO tricrystal microbridges. However, the critical current is nonvanishing at zero field for YBCO, consistent with an orthorhombically distorted d-wave order parameter. An ion-irradiated YBCO tricrystal microbridge has also been measured, and has been found to exhibit more ideal dx2−y2-like behavior with increasing irradiation dosage.

Notes: Abstract We show from muon spin relaxation (μSR) studies on mercury HTS superconductors that a 50-fold increase in irreversibility field obtained by partial substitution of Re for Hg is due to metallisation of the Hg/Re layer. Induced superconductivity on this metallic layer doubles the overall superfluid density. This suggests a new approach to the design of high performance HTS materials: metallising one of the non-CuO2 interlayers and thereby greatly enhancing the superconducting properties.
