    Notes: Abstract. We model a situation in which agents must choose between two technologies that operate under local, positive network externalities. We find that decentralized behaviour can lead to the emergence of a technical standard, but can also result in a variety of other equilibria. Policy to eliminate non-standardized equilibria can be effected, but in some cases it may be very costly.

    Notes: The secondary-electron spectrum, or the energy distribution of the ejected electrons resulting from charged-particle impact, is a crucial input to the microscopic modeling of radiation actions. The present article shows a general method for systematizing a bulk of data on the secondary-electron spectrum into a small number of indices. Our method is based on firm theoretical grounds, i.e., on thorough examination of the mathematical physics that governs the secondary-electron spectrum. We present several examples of the analysis of recent experimental data for proton impact.

    Notes: An adiabatic thermalization model is developed to describe a typical pulsed laser deposition (PLD) process. The interaction of atoms in the plume, ejected from the target, with those of the background gas (e.g., oxygen) is specifically considered. The model gives a physical definition of the "plume range," which depends on the particular PLD system, and calculates the range values. One prediction is that when the target-to-substrate distance is optimized, the deposition rate exhibits an extremely weak dependence on pulse intensity and will always be about 1 Å per pulse. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Numerical modeling studies were carried out for the design and performance evaluation of an eddy current probe for superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) based noncontacting electromagnetic nondestructive testing. The probe utilizes high-Tc SQUID from electromagnetic interference and to focus magnetic flux due to the eddy current excitation coil into the object under test (OUT). This is very important in order to achieve "self-nulling," where the probe responds only to the defects in the OUT. Simulations are carried out with the eddy current probe located a finite distance above a defect free conducting half-space of infinite thickness. Eddy current densities in the OUT are then calculated for various probe designs. These eddy current densities give an indication of the flux focusing, and hence increased spatial resolution for combinations of HTS and μ-metal shielding. Shielding factors are also calculated for the screening of the primary excitation field and the "defect-free" eddy current field. Agreement with the analytical solution of a simple solenoid above a conducting half-space verifies the numerical method.© 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We present a simple method using direct laser beam reflection from the MgO substrate of a PBN:65 thin film to measure strain–electric field hysteresis produced by electric field-induced bending. We obtained both the strain–electric field and time–electric field relationships from these hysteresis curves. In addition, we determined time constants for strain saturation, obtained a quadratic relationship between strain and electric field, and calculated a value of 0.000 875 μm2/V2 for the electrostrictive constant. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The growth of rice seedlings (Oryza satira L.) in the presence of ethylene caused a change in the response to light of coleoptile elongation. In plants grown in air without added ethylene coleoptile elongation was promoted by red, far-red and yellow-green light only in very young seedlings; in older plants irradiation inhibited the growth of the coleoptile. The effect of growing plants in the presence of ethylene was to prolong the period during which light promoted coleoptile growth. Elongation of the first internode was inhibited by light whether or not the seedlings were grown in the presence of ethylene. A correlation existed between the growth effect of an irradiation and the initial decay rate of phytochrome which was established by the treatment. Regardless of wave length, light sources whose intensities were adjusted to produce a decay rate of about 10% per hour or less induced a moderate rate of coleoptile elongation which persisted for a relatively long period. Irradiation with red or yellow-green light of higher intensity which produced a higher rate of phytochrome decay induced a higher rate of coleoptile elongation, but growth stopped after several hours. Other observations, however, showed that one cannot establish a general simple correlation between the rate of elongation of rice coleoptiles under light and the status of measurable phytochrome in the plant.

    Notes: Gametophytes of Onoclea sensibilis were grown under continuous white light of 90 lux. Filaments were produced having 4–6 cells before the initiation of 2-dimensional growth. There was a close correlation between the average cell number of a population of plants and the proportion of 2-dimensional forms. 8-Azaguanine produced a general inhibition of growth, and it was shown that the reduced proportion of 2-dimensional plants caused by 8-azaguanine was a secondary consequence of the general growth inhibition. IAA however gave a true specific inhibition of 2-dimensional growth.Based on these experiments the proper criteria for establishing a specific inhibition of 2-dimcnsional growth arc discussed. These criteria are applied in a critical review of previous papers on the inhibition of 2-dimensional growth. It is concluded that no firm evidence is available that inhibition of protein synthesis specifically blocks 2-dimensional growth.

    Notes: The action spectrum for promotion of elongation of protonemata of Onoclea sensibilis has peaks at 400–420, 580–600 and 640–660 nm. The largest growth increments at saturating light doses are produced by yellow and far-red light. Elongation induced by yellow and far-red irradiation persists in old as well as young filaments, while red-light promotion is found only in young filaments. The growth promotion caused by yellow light is partially reversed by red light down to the level of growth produced by red irradiation alone. Elongation of rhizoids is under reversible red, far-red control, while yellow light is inactive. A model is proposed and discussed in which the light-sensitive elongation of filaments is accounted for by the presence of three distinct photoreceptors: phytochrome; a pigment absorbing yellow light. P580; and a pigment absorbing blue light, P420.

    Notes: The blue-green alga Nostoc commune 584 displays a photocontrolled developmental cycle similar to that described for N. muscorum A by Lazaroff and Vishniac (1961). In both species white fluorescent light acts at the same stage, ragulating the development of motile trichomes from sheathed aseriate colonies. However white light blocks this step in N. commune 584, whereas the formation of motile trichomes is promoted by white light in N. muscorum A. Light-grown (aseriate) cultures in N. commune 584 were used to determine the action spectra for photomorphogenesis. Green light (max 520 nm) inhbited aseriate colony breakage, and red light (max 640 nm) promoted colony breakage and the differentiation of motile trichomes. On a quantum basis green light was about 3 times more effective than red light. The morphogenetic effects of either red or green light were reversible by irradiation with the other color of light. Repeated photoreversibility was observed, and the algal culutres responded only to the color of the last irradiation in a sequence. An unidentified substance is excreted into the media of motile cultures of both N. commune 584 and N. muscorum A which promotes motility in non-motile cultures. The motility-promoting substances from both species are reciprocally active. Activity is lost when the media are autoclaved.

    Notes: During spore germination in the fern, Onoclea sensibilis L., the nucleus moves from a central position to one end, and an asymmetrical cell division partitions the spore into two cells of greatly unequal size. The smaller cell differentiates directly into a rhizoid, whereas the larger cell and its derivatives give rise to the prothallus. In the presence of 5 mM caffeine, the nuclei of most of the spores undergo mitotic replication, whereas cell wall formation is blocked. Multinucleate single cells are produced, which are capable of growth, but no rhizoid differentiation occurs. In some cases a partial cell wall is produced, but the nucleus moves through the discontinuity back to the center of the spore, and the enucleate, incompletely partitioned small “cell” fails to differentiate into a rhizoid. In less than 1% of the spores a broad protuberance, whose wall is yellow-brown, is formed in a multinucleate single cell. The color, staining reaction to ruthenium red, and ultrastructural appearance of the protuberance resemble that of the rhizoid wall. It appears that infrequently in the caffeine-treated spores, a feature which is characteristic of rhizoids is expressed, in the absence of asymmetric cell division, in a cell which otherwise is unable to produce a rhizoid. The results are interpreted to mean that the spore has a highly localized, persistent differentiated region. For rhizoid differentiation to occur, a nucleus must be confined in that region – a confinement which normally is accomplished by the geometrically asymmetric first cell division of germination.
