Notes: Abstract. Among the physical realizations of the elements required for quantum computation nano-scale electronic devices [2, 10, 12, 16] are very promising. They can be easily integrated into electronic circuits and scaled up to large numbers of qubits. Here we describe qubits based on low-capacitance Josephson junctions. In these systems Coulomb blockade effects allow the control of the charge on a superconducting island. They constitute quantum bits, with logical states differing by the charge on one island. Single- and two-bit operations can be performed by manipulating applied gate voltages. The phase coherence time is sufficiently long to allow a series of these steps. In addition to the manipulation of qubits, the resulting quantum state can be read out by coupling a single-electron transistor capacitively to the qubit.

Notes: We present an extended set of moment equations which allow us to investigate hot-electron effects and ballistic transport in semiconducting devices with inhomogeneities in the submicron range. This model extends the familiar drift-diffusion description but nevertheless is computationally not much more involved. In contrast to full solutions of the Boltzmann transport equation, which can be obtained only in very simple limits, our model can describe realistic geometries and general collision processes. We find reasonably good agreement with rigorous solutions where these exist.

Notes: [Auszug] The continuing miniaturization of electronic devices has reached system sizes of ten nanometres, where quantum mechanical effects become important. A fundamental question is how the collective properties of these devices, such as superconductivity, are affected when the system's dimensions are ...

Notes: Abstract The tunneling of single electrons in small capacitance tunnel junctions is influenced by charging effects and by the fluctuations of the elecromagnetic environment. We study the effect of an external circuit with arbitrary impedance on the tunneling of quasiparticles and Cooper pairs in voltage driven Josephson junctions. We present results at finite temperatures and also consider an acdriven system.

Notes: Abstract Small capacitance tunnel junctions show single electron effects and, in the superconducting state, the coherent tunneling of Cooper pairs. We study these effects in a system of two Josephson junctions, driven by a voltage source with a finite impedance. Novel features show up in theI−V characteristics, in particular pronounced structures at subgap voltages. These are due to Cooper pair tunneling, combined with tunneling of quasiparticles or with excitation of the electromagnetic environment.

Notes: Abstract We study electron transport through single and double quantumdots with large level spacing and charging energy. Motivatedby recent experiments we focus on linear and nonlinearresponse of two model systems: a single dot with two levelsand a capacitively coupled double dot. At low temperature andstrong coupling to the leads, quantum fluctuations and Kondo-like many-body effects become important and show up, e.g., asresonances in the current-voltage characteristics. Inparticular, we propose a way to observe the splitting of theKondo peak as a function of the applied bias voltage.

Notes: Abstract Recent experiments on the proximity induced supercurrent in mesoscopic normal wires revealed a surprising temperature dependence. They suggest clean-limit behavior although the wires are strongly disordered. We demonstrate that this unexpected scaling is actually contained in the conventional description of diffusive superconductors and find excellent ggreement with the experimental results. In addition we propose a SQUID-like proximity structure for further experimental investigations of the effects in question.

Notes: Starting from the equation of Gor'kov and Eliashberg in a form introduced by Eilenberger, we derive a set of linearized equations for the deviation from the equilibrium value of the quasiparticle distribution function as well as of the order parameter. These equations resemble the Boltzmann equation and the Ginzburg-Landau equation, respectively, and they form a set of coupled equations. Two different modes can be distinguished, depending on whether the order parameter changes in magnitude or in phase. The equations are solved for the case of a stationary quasiparticle injection into a superconductor and the change in the electrochemical potential of the quasiparticles is calculated. Furthermore, we treat the problem of a current flowing perpendicular to a superconducting-normal interface in which a normal current is converted into a supercurrent, and we calculate the extra resistance of the interface.

Notes: The dynamic properties of the order parameter and the quasiparticle distribution function in short superconducting weak links are investigated. The corresponding equations recently derived by Schmid, Schön, and Tinkham are solved numerically in a wide range of parameters. The complete low-voltage part of the current-voltage characteristic is determined, which shows a foot structure observed in many experiments. The frequency spectrum of the emitted Josephson radiation is also calculated.
