    Notes: The vertebral centra of Hiodon, Elops, and Albula are direct perichordal ossifications (autocentra) which enclose the arcocentra as in Amia. An inner ring of ovoid cells forms in late ontogeny from the intervertebral space inside the autocentrum. The chordacentrum is reduced or completely absent in centra of adult Elops, whereas it forms an important portion of the centra in adult Hiodon. The posterior portion of the compound ural centrum 3+4+5 is partially (Hiodon) or fully formed by the chordacentrum (Elops, Albula). The haemal arches and hypurals are fused medially by cartilage or bone trabecles of the arcocentrum with the centra, even though they appear autogenous in lateral view in Elops and Albula. The composition of the caudal skeleton of fossil teleosts and the ontogeny of that of Hiodon, Elops, and Albula corroborate a one-to-one relationship of ural centra with these dorsal and ventral elements. The first epural (epural 1) of Elops relates to ural centrum 1, whereas the first epural (epural 2) of Hiodon and Albula relates to ural centrum 2. In Albula, the first ural centrum is formed by ural centrum 2 only. With 4 uroneurals Hiodon has the highest number within recent teleosts. Juvenile specimens of Hiodon have eight, the highest number of hypurals within recent teleosts; this is the primitive condition by comparison with other teleosts and pholidophorids. Reduction of elements in the caudal skeleton is an advanced feature as seen within elopomorphs from Elops to Albula. Such reductions and fusions occur in osteoglossomorphs also, but the lack of epurals and uroneurals separates most osteoglossomorphs (except Hiodon) from all other teleosts.

    Notes: The fertilized egg and the two-cell stage and four-cell stage of the marsupial Antechinus stuartii were studied by transmission electron microscopy. The features that make the fertilized egg of Antechinus stuartii different from those of any eutherian mammal are (1) the presence of a shell and (2) the relatively large quantity and polarized distribution of cytoplasmic inclusions, including lipid, protein yolk bodies, and protein fibers. Mitochondria and vesicles of smooth endoplasmic reticulum are also polarized in distribution. Early cleavage differs from that of eutherians in several ways: (1) it occurs in the uterus; (2) there is extrusion of a large, single, membrane-bound yolk mass at first cleavage; and (3) blastomeres become separated after the second cleavage division and thus do not adhere by cell-to-cell contacts. Prior to the second division, blastomeres are connected to each other by remnants of the midbody and to the yolk mass by remnants of a cytoplasmic bridge. The yolk mass after extrusion is surrounded by plasma membrane and contains inclusions of lipid, protein yolk bodies, and fibers, as well as mitochondria and smooth endoplasmic reticulum. The blastomeres of the two-cell and four-cell stages also show intracellular polarization in the distribution of retained inclusions and organelles. Vesicles developing at the periphery of blastomeres and discharging their contents extracellularly increase in size and number from the fertilized egg to the four-cell stage. The discharged contents may be implicated in early development of the blastula cavity.

    Notes: Morphology of branchial chloride cells in the freshwater teleosts Plecoglossus altivelis, Cyprinus carpio, and Oreochromis mossambicus was studied by light and transmission electron microscopy. The chloride cell has an apical membrane directly in contact with the outer medium. Generally, two or more neighboring chloride cells share an apical pit, forming a multicellular complex. The chloride cells form a multicellular complex in which cells differ in cytoplasmic electron density, development of tubular system, and in cell size. Chloride cells are linked by junctions which are shallower than the tight junctions that occur between neighboring pavement cells or between pavement and chloride cells. Multicellular complexes of chloride cells create additional paracellular pathways marked apically by the shallower junctions. Since junctional structure affects transepithelial permeability, development of multicellular complexes of chloride cells in freshwater fishes may be related to the transport of some substances as in the gills of marine fishes.

    Notes: The nerve pathways in the praesoma are described for the first time for a member of the genus Octospinifer. Eleven nerves, five paired, and one single, are traced from the cerebral ganglion to their associations with the musculature of the body wall, neck sense organs, and the musculature of the proboscis wall and the invertor muscles of the proboscis. The structure and location of the Stützzelle (support cell) and its association with the neck sense organs are described. A comparison with the nervous system in the praesoma of Noechinorhynchus and Paulisentis is discussed.

    Notes: The morphology of the tongue of agamid lizards is reviewed and discussed in the context of its functional and phylogenetic significance. It is shown that in several features, including the development of the central musculature of the tongue into a ring muscle and the presence of a genioglossus internus muscle in adults, the tongue in most agamids is derived relative to that in other squamates. In some features, such as the vertical connective tissue septa, agamids share primitive features with Sphenodon. Some conditions found in agamids are also found in anoline iguanids. Two genera, Uromastyx and Leiolepis, differ significantly from other agamids in intrinsic tongue musculature.The functional significance of the unique tongue morphology is that agamids utilize a different mechanism of tongue protrusion from that of other lizards. This mechanism involves the production of force against the lingual process, leading to an anterior slide of the tongue, and is detailed in this paper. Finally, I discuss the mechanical basis for the transformation series of tongue protrusion mechanisms from agamids to chamaeleonids. It is suggested that the mechanism of tongue protrusion in chamaeleonids is not unique, but is a highly derived state of the condition found in agamids.

    Notes: The fine structure of the Malpighian tubules (Mts) and rectal sac (rs) is described in the larval tick Ornithodoros (Pavlovskyella) erraticus before and after feeding up to molting. Mts consist of structurally different pyramidal and cuboidal cells along the entire length of the tubule. In unfed ticks, the two types of cell are characterized by apical microvilli and a few basal membrane infoldings. The abundant pyramidal cells contain glycogen particles, lipid droplets, lysosomelike structures, and rickettsialike microorganisms. After feeding but before molting, pyramidal cells loose glycogen particles and become very dense and dramatically reduced in size. These cells are possibly involved in the formation of guanine crystalloids as an excretory product. In contrast, cuboidal cells, filled with glycogen particles, free ribosomes, and mitochondria in unfed larvae, grow steadily after feeding; their cytoplasm becomes rich in lipid droplets in addition to showing an increase in glycogen particles. Lipid and glycogen could be the source of energy required for water and ion reabsoprtion in which cuboidal cells are probably involved.The paired-lobe rs consists of one type of cuboidal cells with basal membrane infoldings and a brush-border microvilli covered by a fuzzy coat of glycocalyx. These cells grow rapidly after feeding; they have functional features indicating extensive, selective reabsorption of essential components from excretory products.

    Notes: The peritrophic membrane of Drosophila melanogaster consists of four layers, each associated with a specific region of the folded epithelial lining of the cardia. The epithelium is adapted to produce this multilaminar peritrophic membrane by bringing together several regions of foregut and midgut, each characterized by a distinctively differentiated cell type. The very thin, electron-dense inner layer of the peritrophic membrane originates adjacent to the cuticular surface of the stomadeal valve and so appears to require some contribution by the underlying foregut cells. These foregut cells are characterized by dense concentrations of glycogen, extensive arrays of smooth endoplasmic reticulum, and pleated apical plasma membranes. The second and thickest layer of the peritrophic membrane coalesces from amorphous, periodic acid-Schiff-positive material between the microvilli of midgut cells in the neck of the valve. The third layer of the peritrophic membrane is composed of fine electron-dense granules associated with the tall midgut cells of the outer cardia wall. These columnar cells are characterized by cytoplasm filled with extensive rough endoplasmic reticulum and numerous Golgi bodies and by an apical projection filled with secretory vesicles and covered by microvilli. The fourth, outer layer of the peritrophic membrane originates over the brush border of the cuboidal midgut cells, which connect the cardia with the ventriculus.

    Notes: The seminal receptacle of Paragonimus ohirai contains not only mature spermatozoa, but also atypical and degenerate ones, suggesting that abnormal spermatozoa are retained in this organ. The spermatozoon is of a parallel biflagellar type with cortical microtubules, consisting of the anterior region, first mitochondrial region, intermediate (amitochondrial) region, second mitochondrial region, posterior nuclear region (PNR) and tail region (TR). The first third of the spermatozoon exhibits typical undulatory movement, while the middle part shows vibratory movement. At the area between head and midsections (H-M area) the peripheral doublets of axonemes are interrupted, and the external ornamentation is distributed widely around this portion. Throughout the immotile PNR and TR, the axonemes lack the dynein arms of their peripheral doublets. H-M, PNR, and TR ultrastructural characteristics are specific in P. ohirai spermatozoon and seem to be closely related to its pattern of movement.

    Notes: In uloborid spiders, eye loss is accompanied by increased visual angles, optical material investment, and potential visual acuity of the retained eyes. Relative to carapace volume, the six-eyed Hyptiotes cavatus and two four-eyed Miagrammopes species have greater retinal hemisphere areas and lens volumes than do the eight-eyed uloborids Waitkera waitkerensis, Uloborus glomosus, and Octonoba sinensis. In Waitkera, in which the eyes have little visual overlap, and in Miagrammopes, in which eye loss simplifies the spiders' patterns of visual overlap, increased retinal cell density enhances potential visual acuity. However, this occurs at the expense of potential retinal cell sensitivity.

    Notes: Intercellular bridges joining cells contained in cysts of Chortophaga viridifasciata testes were studied with light and electron microscopy. Preparations consisted of expressed whole cells (living, or fixed and stained) as well as sections. The secondary spermatogonia of each cyst are joined centrally by persisting fused interzonal bodies (fusomes) of incompletely cleaved cells. Shifts in cell orientation during anaphase are apparently responsible for central as opposed to chain linkage of cells. In the primary spermatocytes, the central fusome is replaced by a chain linkage, apparently resulting from the breakdown of the fusome into its original interzonal body components. Intercellular bridges are also present in spermatids, but there is no evidence to indicate the time of their formation (in the immediately preceding meiotic divisions or in the secondary spermatogonial divisions). The function of the compact centrally situated fusome in the secondary spermatogonial cyst is discussed as it relates to synchrony, number of cell divisions, spermatodesm formation, and fertility.

    Notes: Using laboratory-grown colonies of Plumatella emarginata, the formation of the floatoblast and the sessoblast was studied. Both types of statoblast develop in the funiculus. Toward the termination of development, the floatoblast secretes a gas and the float chambers are filled with the gas in about 20-30 minutes. The floatoblast thus complete is separated from the funiculus. Until early epidermal-disc-stage, distinction between a floatoblast and a sessoblast is impossible at least morphologically. Toward the late epidermal-disc stage, a future sessoblast becomes larger than a future floatoblast and attaches by its cystigenic side to the cystid. Very often it initially attaches to a lateral wall, then migrates to the basal wall of the cystid. Both the attachment to and the migration along the cystid wall are attained by peritoneal cells covering the sessoblast, specifically by those in the marginal zone of the cystigenic side. The sessoblast is separated from the funiculus precociously, shortly after attachment to the cystid. Then, it produces the capsule, followed by the formation of both the lamella, a homologue of the float in the floatoblast, and the attaching apparatus.Almost all polypides produce floatoblasts (up to 17 in number), but only a small portion of them produce both floatoblasts and sessoblasts. The number of sessoblasts produced by a single polypide is usually not more than 3 but occasionally reaches up to 6. When multiple sessoblasts are formed by a polypide, they are as a rule derived from primordia located adjacently on the funiculus, accordingly successively in a short period, but their arrangement on the basal wall of the cystid does not always correspond to that on the funiculus. Sessoblast formation is never associated with the death of the mother polypide. Ancestrulae derived from statoblasts never produce mature statoblasts, though may undergo gametogenesis. Several mosaic statoblasts consisting of floatoblast- and sessoblast-portions were found in some species of the Plumatellidae. A primordium of the statoblast seems to have a dual ability of differentiating into either a floatoblast or a sessoblast; but little has been known about the mechanism or factors controlling the formation of these two types of statoblasts.

    Notes: The giant anterior salivary gland cells from the large mammalian blood-sucking, glossiphoniid leech, Haementeria ghilianii, can be subdivided into three morphologically and functionally distinct regions: (1) a soma, responsible for the synthesis and storage of secretory products; (2) a long cell process, responsible for the storage and intracellular transport of the secretory vesicles; and (3) the site of exocytosis at the process terminal. The giant somata are densely packed with secretory vesicles. Deep plasmalemmal invaginations invade the soma and form an extensive system of extracellular lacunae. The rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and the Golgi apparatus are organized in the cell periphery, near the highly branched nucleus, and along the lacunae. The somata taper into long processes extending over several centimeters to the proboscis tip. These contain secretory vesicles through their whole length. In the process periphery, the vesicles are completely ensheathed by a concentric subplasmalemmal smooth ER cisterna. This originates deeply within the soma and extends through the whole cell process to its terminal. The ER provides support for up to several hundred longitudinally oriented microtubules. Secretion occurs at the very tip of the cell processes, each of which terminates at the proboscis tip at the base of a cuticular pore.We found synapses close to the sites of exocytosis, providing morphological evidence for neuronal control of secretion.

    Notes: Two fast-twitch fiber types are histochemically identified in the primary flight muscles of Artibeus jamaicensis. These are classified as type IIa and IIb according to an acid-preincubation staining protocol for myosin ATPase. All fibers in the bat flight muscles exhibit relatively intense staining properties for NADH-TR, suggesting a high oxidative capacity. The glycolytic potential of all fibers is rather low, as assessed by stains for alpha-GPD. This two-type histochemical profile appears to parallel biphasic electromyographic patterns observed in these muscles and leads us to propose that flight muscle histochemistry and activation are mediated by a “two-gear” neuromuscular control system. In contrast, earlier studies on Tadarida brasiliensis demonstrate the existence of a “one-gear” neuromuscular control system, exemplified by the presence of one fiber type. These observations are discussed with respect to the natural history and flight styles of several species.

    Notes: The distribution and histology of zymogen cells and the activity of digestive enzymes have been examined in the alimentary canal of larval, metamorphosing (stages 1-7), and adult Geotria australis (Geotriidae). Comparisons of the arrangement of the larval and adult zymogen cells are made with those observed in Mordacia mordax, a representative of the other Southern Hemisphere lamprey family (Mordaciidae), and with those reported elsewhere for holarctic lampreys (Petromyzontidae). In larval G. australis, epithelial zymogen cells are mainly restricted to the prominent pair of tubular diverticula which project forward from the oesophageal/intestinal junction. By contrast, zymogen cells of adults are present in the epithelium of both the anterior intestine and the intestinal caecum, a structure located at the new and more anterior oesophageal/intestinal junction which forms during metamorphosis. Amylolytic activity was greater in the larval divrticula than in the adult caecum, whereas the reverse was true for tryptic activity. This feature presumably reflects the high dietary contribution made by detritus and algae during the filter-feeding larval phase and by host muscle tissue during the predatory adult phase. The high tryptic activity in the caecum must promote the early breakdown of host tissue and thereby facilitate the digestion of lipids in the anterior intestine where lipolytic activity is high. At the commencement of metamorphosis, digestive activity and the number of zymogen cells declines markedly. By stage 4 the intestine has rotated anticlockwise almost 360°; the two larval diverticula have disappeared; and the new exocrine caecum of the adult has started to develop from a forward proliferation of intestinal mucosal cells. While the exocrine pancreatic tissue of larval M. mordax is unique amongst lampreys in its location within a single, large diverticulum containing an extensive network of mucosal folds, that of the adult is found in the same position as in G. australis and holarctic lampreys.

    Notes: Cytoarchitectonic studies of the pretectum and diencephalon of five teleosts (Gaidropsarus mediterraneus, Syngnathus acus, Gasterosteus aculeatus, Pleuronectes platessa, and Coris julis) have shown the hypothalamus to be the most highly developed region in all five. The nucleus praeopticus magnocellularis is well developed in Coris and the euryhalines Gasterosteus and Pleuronectes; in Coris and Pleuronectes the nucleus lateralis tuberis is also prominent. Except in Gaidropsarus, however, the most striking area in the hypothalamus is the glomerulosus complex, with its voluminous nucleus glomerulosus. In Coris and Pleuronectes a glomerular offshoot of this nucleus in the dorsal thalamus is evidence of its being homologous with the nucleus anterior thalami of primitive teleosts. The nucleus diffusus is also very large in all except Gaidropsarus. In Coris and Syngnathus the saccus vasculosus exhibits a peduncle, and in Pleuronectes it invades the hypophysis. The descriptive analysis is complemented by measuring the relative size and cell density of the cell groups studied.A comparison among the five species studied shows that nuclei probably related to the olfactory system are more developed in Gaidropsarus and Pleuronectes, whereas the supposed visual nuclei are prominent in Coris, Gasterosteus, and Syngnathus but poorly developed in Gaidropsarus. In general, the findings of the present study, together with published results concerning Lizza (Gómez-Segade and Anadón, Trab. Inst. Cajal Invest. Biol. 72:187-214, 1981), show that Coris has the most complex diencephalon among these species. Moreover, Gaidropsarus presents an organization very different from that of the other five species and probably represents a parallel evolutionary lineage.

    Notes: Electromyography and cinematography were used to determine the activity of epaxial muscles of colubrid snakes during terrestrial and aquatic lateral undulatory locomotion. In both types of lateral undulation, at a given longitudinal position, segments of three muscles (Mm. semispinalis-spinalis, longissimus dorsi, and iliocostalis) usually show synchronous activity. Muscle activity propagates posteriorly and generally is unilateral. With each muscle, large numbers of adjacent segments (30 to 100) show simultaneous activity. Terrestrial and aquatic undulation differ in two major respects. (1) During terrestrial undulation, muscle activity in a particular region begins when that portion of the body has reached maximal convex flexion and ends when it is maximally concave; this phase relation is uniform along the entire snake. During swimming, however, muscle activity passes posteriorly faster than the wave of vertebral flexion, causing the relation of muscle activity to flexion to change along the length of the snake. (2) In the terrestrial mode, the block of active muscle segments remains approximately constant in size as it passes down the snake, whereas during swimming the number of adjacent active muscle segments increases posteriorly. Despite the fact that Elaphe obsoleta has nearly twice as many body vertebrate as Nerodia fasciata (240 vs. 125), the only difference observed in the swimming of these two species is that a larger number of adjacent muscle segments is simultaneously active in comparable regions of Elaphe obsoleta than in Nerodia fasciata.

    Notes: Two groups of external excretory pores associated with glandular units (AU and LPU) were observed on the labrum, one pair laterally and three pairs posteriorly. Each external pore leads to an underlying conical, flask-shaped epidermal chamber. The wide base of this chamber is perforated by an internal pore that delivers secretions from the excretory duct of a glandular unit. The chambers serve to protect the internal pores from turbulence in the outside environment. Expulsion of secretions from the chambers is probably brought about by contraction of labral striated muscles, which synchronizes opening of the AU and LPU pores. A complex funnel-shaped structure forms the internal end of the excretory duct between each chamber and the corresponding pole of accumulation for the secretory product of a glandular unit. This structure, composed of an epidermal syncytium lined by a sleeve of several aligned auxiliary cells, probably ensures a tight connection between the epidermal chamber and the syncytium. The dorsalmost glandular units (LDU) have no pores in the vicinity of their poles of accumulation. Instead they secrete through cuticular ducts delimited by aligned auxiliary cells. External pores for these canals have not yet been located. The secretions of lateral pores may be mucopolysaccharides that play an essential role in agglutination of food particles soon after capture, while the secretions of posterior pores may contain glycoproteins that mix with food only after ingestion into the buccal cavity and probably start the process of digestion.

    Notes: The process of metamorphosis in tiger salamanders, Ambystoma tigrinum, is used to investigate motor pattern conservatism in vertebrates. Specifically, we examined cranial muscle activity to determine if changes in the motor pattern are correlated with the morphological or environmental changes that occur at metamorphosis.Twenty-three variables were measured from electromyographic recordings from six cranial muscles in 13 tiger salamanders. These variables described the configuration of the motor pattern: the peak amplitude of activity, duration, relative onset, and time to peak amplitude were measured for each of the six muscles. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses showed that there was no change in the mean motor pattern associated with the morphological transformation at metamorphosis: larval and metamorphosed individuals feeding in the water have very similar motor patterns. This was true despite significant morphological changes in the design of the feeding mechanism at metamorphosis and despite a significant decrease in aquatic feeding performance following metamorphosis.There was a change in the mean motor pattern to jaw muscles when metamorphosed individuals fed in water and on land: metamorphosed terrestrial feedings tend to have longer bursts of muscle activity then do aquatic feedings. The environmental changes in the motor pattern cannot be attributed to effects of differing fluid density or viscosity between water and air and are instead related to the shift to feeding by tongue projection on land.The decrease in aquatic feeding performance that occurs after metamorphosis is not correlated with changes in the motor pattern. Instead, the results suggest that changes in behavioral performance during ontogeny are associated with the transformation of hydrodynamic design of the feeding mechanism from uni- to bidirectional, and that motor patterns driving complex rapid behaviors may be conserved when behavior is altered by changes in peripheral morphology.

    Notes: Silver impregnations, immunofluorescence microscopy, and electron microscopy of the nervous system of Velella confirm previous reports that there are two nerve nets, one composed of small and the other of “giant” neurites. Only one of these systems, the small-fibered open one, shows FMRFamide-like immunoreactivity. It appears to be primarily a sensory network. Despite presence of a neuropeptide in these neurons, they did not contain dense-cored vesicles. The “giant” nerve net (closed system) shows many connections that appear syncytial in the silver preparations. While it is confirmed that gap junctions are present between some neurites in the closed system, it is likely that fusion of neurites also occurs and that the system is a partial syncytium. Membrane complexes with gap junctions are abundant in the cytoplasm. It is suggested that fusion occurs by the engulfment of small neurons by large, resulting in an excess of cell membrane, which is internalized with gap junctions still intact. These internalized membranes appear to break up into vesicles eventually. A similar process may occur in the “giant” swimming motor neuron net of the medusa Polyorchis.

Swellings of nerve fibers are in close contact with gland cell membranes, either on the cell surface or inserted into infoldings of plasma membrane. The axonal processes are single or double and lack glial wrappings. Inside the nerve fibers are vesicles of different sizes and electron density. These include granular vesicles, which often are dense-cored, and also clearer vesicles.Some presynaptic differentiations lie along the contact line of the axonal process with the gland cell membrane. The significance of the vesicles is discussed in terms of their possible content of biogenic amines, as described in other invertebrates.

    Notes: Jenynsia lineata retains its embryos within the ovarian cavity for a prolonged gestation. In the absence of egg envelopes, maternal - embryonic transfer occurs through ovarian fluid across apposed epithelia, relatively lining the ovarian lumen and the surface of the embryos. There are no hypertrophied extraembryonic structures that could provide expanded exchange surfaces for the passage of nutrients beyond the 8-mm stage, but structural specializations of the ovary then form, and these may sustain embryogenesis. Outgrowths of the inner lining of the ovary, villi ovariales, enter the pharyngeal cavity of the embryos via an opercular cleft remaining from early stages of development, after depletion of yolk reserves, until shortly before term. The ovary and its villi are lined by a monolayer of squamous cells showing evidence of vesicular transport of macromolecular substances both on the apical surface and at the basolateral pole. It serves for transcellular passage of maternally derived substances rather than as a source of secretory products. Most adjacent cells interdigitate, and the epithelium is continuous except for few gaps at the villous tips, which allow paracellular passage of particulate matter. These epithelial cells contain abundant filaments, electron-dense granules within the cytoplasm and the nucleus, sparse elements of the rough endoplasmic reticulum, a Golgi apparatus, and different sorts of vacuoles. The capillaries in the intraovarian lining are spaced most densely at the ovarian wall, less so toward the tips of the villi. The villi ovariales contain a network of connective tissue that forms endotheliumlike septa, which divide the interior into numerous different-sized loculi.

    Notes: The fine structure of the male germinal cells in testes of two salps, Thalia democratica and Cyclosalpa affinis, is identical. The earliest germ cells seen were spermatocytes, located at the periphery of the testis and sometimes connected by cytoplasmic bridges. They are spherical with an anucleolate nucleus, a pair of centrioles, aboundant free ribosomes, sparse rough endoplasmic reticulum, and about five mitochondria. No Golgi complex was seen. The earliest spermatids, though similar to the spermatocytes, are smaller and have only one centriole. Spermatids develop (1) singly, (2) joined by cytoplasmic bridges, or (3) in syncytia. The next stage has a flagellum, a single large mitochondrion with dense material in some intracristal spaces, and a patch of highly condensed chromatin in the nucleus adjacent to the centriole. Subsequently the nucleus and the spermatid elongate. During elongation (1) the mitochondrion remains lateral to the nucleus and the amount of intracristal material enlarges, (2) the central core of condensed chromatin increases, and (3) the remainder of the chromatin becomes organized into dense strands. When elongation is 75% complete, the dense strands of chromatin appear to coalesce, to become homogeneous and denser than the core of chromatin, and the mitochondrion transforms into dense tubules. Finally, the mitochondrion wraps around the nucleus and extends its entire length, ultimately becoming a single tubule spiraled about 45 times around the nucleus. The mature sperm head is 18 μm long, tapering from 0.8 μm posteriorly to a tip about 0.14 μm wide. There is no acrosome. The single (distal) centriole of the sperm gives rise to a 9+2 flagellum with a fuzzy coat and dense material peripheral to each of the nine doublets. Spermiogenesis in T. democratica and C. affinis is similar to that in ascidians, and the sperm share many features with sperm of colonial ascidians in the suborder Didemnidae. The results, therefore, suggest that salps are closely related to ascidians and support the view that colonial ascidians gave rise to salps.

    Notes: The penis of the silkmoth, Bombyx mori, consists of two parts covered with cuticle, the corpus penis and crus penis, and a third part, the radix penis, without a cuticle but surrounded by a thick sphincter. The radix penis is divisible into anterior and posterior parts. The ductus (d.) ejaculatorius passing through the penis has no secretory cells. In the anterior radix penis, the wall of the d. ejaculatorius is thin and without folds; in the posterior section, it is thick, with folds in its lumen. The glandula (g.) prostatica is divisible into anterior and posterior parts according to differences in the histological and morphological characteristics of the cells and their secretions, which contain many heterogeneous substances. In the anterior g. prostatica, secretions accumulate separately in the anterior and posterior sections before ejaculation. Unlike the posterior region, the anterior region displays a large mass(es) at the periphery of the lumen along the secretory cell layer. Judging from staining properties, the pearly body and the first layer of the spermatophore wall, which, after copulation, form in the female bursa copulatrix, seem to be derived from the secretions of the anterior and posterior regions of the g. prostatica, respectively. The secretion of the posterior g. prostatica contains initiatorin, which acts as a sperm-activating factor in the inner and outer matrices of the spermatophore. An ejaculatory valve is found between the radix penis and the g. prostatica. The opening of this valve is regulated by the surrounding sphincter, thus impeding the back-flow of secretions and seminal fluid in the radix penis and resulting in their transport outwards during ejaculation. The musculature of the d. ejaculatorius and the corpus penis promotes further transport of these secretions into the female bursa copulatrix.

    Notes: During ontogeny, the apical and basal components of dicamptodontid teeth exhibit three major developmental stages: nonpedicellate, subpedicellate, and pedicellate. Premetamorphic larvae tend to have nonpedicellate teeth, incompletely or recently metamorphosed individuals tend to have subpedicellate teeth, and fully transformed adults usually have pedicellate teeth. In concert with this transition, cusp morphology is modified from a larval monocuspid, to an incipiently bicuspid, to definitive adult bicuspid, and finally to an adult monocuspid condition. Thus, the larval and adult monocuspid conditions are ontogenetically distinct. The morphology of the larval monocuspid, adult bicuspid, and adult monocuspid conditions differs between Dicamptodon and Rhyacotriton. However, the incipient bicuspid condition in these two genera is very similar in appearance, suggesting that Dicamptodon and Rhyacotriton may be more closely related to each other than to the family Ambystomatidae in which they both sometimes are placed. The method of establishing ontogenetic trajectories seems to be preferable to comparisons based on adult structure, since similarities in the morphology of adults often is owing to convergent or parallel evolution.

    Notes: Comparative morphological analysis of the female reproductive tract in macroglossine bats was undertaken to test the hypothesis that nectarivory arose at least twice within Old World fruit bats. Given that features of the female reproductive tract are not directly involved in adaptations for feeding, this data set should provide a test of the monophyly of macroglossine bats. A cladistic analysis of variation in the structure of the ovaries, oviducts, uterus, and external genitalia supports the hypothesis that Megaloglossus has developed a nectar-feeding habit independent of other macroglossine genera. Most of the variation in female reproductive organs among pteropodids is found in the development of derived external and internal features of the uterus. Fusion of uterine cornua, expansion of the common uterine body, and elaboration of the cervical region are found in a group which includes species of Pteropus, Dobsonia, Nyctimene, and the macroglossines (excluding Megaloglossus). Results of this study are concordant with independent data sets, thus providing a phylogenetic framework to evaluate critically structural and functional design in the evolution of pteropodid feeding mechanisms.

Data derived from postmetamorphic U. laevigata indicate that dermal and endochondral elements ossify independently of each other in Uperoleia. Crinia signifera does not show the same degree of independence of ossification of dermal and endochondral elements as Uperoleia, whereas dermal and endochondral elements are not independent in P. bibroni. Ten (or possibly eleven) features are identified as being influenced by heterochrony within Uperoleia, confirming that the genus represents a highly pedomorphic lineage, four elements are influenced by heterochrony in Crinia, but only two in Pseudophryne.

    Notes: Investigation of eight developmental stages by means of serial sections and subsequent graphic or wax model reconstructions, as well as by means of cleared-and-stained and dissected material, revealed that the ethmoidal endocranium in Pipa pipa consists in early states of a single horizontal ethmoid plate lacking labial cartilages. Later in the course of development, structures comparable with those in other anurans appear, though modified and of reduced size. These adult structures arise from the new cartilaginous tissue located above the former larval ethmoid plate, whereas the latter entirely disappear. This phenomenon can be observed also in P. carvalhoi and in Xenopus laevis; hence, it supposedly occurs in all pipids. On the other hand, in anuran larvae, which develop cornua trabecularum in the ethmoidal region, these persist in adults as part of the nasal septum. Positional and developmental differences suggest that, although the ethmoid plate and the cornua trabecularum arise from the same region of the cranial neural crest, they are not fully corresponding structures. Comparison with adults of other pipid genera confirmed the conclusion of some earlier investigators that P. pipa is the most specialized among pipids.

    Notes: The Harderian gland of the musk shrew Suncus murinus is elongated anteroposteriorly from in front of the eye to behind the ear. The gland is divided into two portions: an anterior portion (A portion) and a posterior portion (P portion). The single secretory duct of the gland emerges from the anterior end of the P portion, receives several secretory ducts of the A portion during the course along it, runs around the ventral aspect of the eyeball, and finally opens into the anterior corner of conjunctival sacs. The two portions of the gland show a fundamentally similar histological structure, having a poorly developed intraglandular duct system and wide tubular alveoli. The quantity of lipid vacuoles and stromal connective tissue in the A portion is greater than in the P portion. The lipid vacuoles in both portions are surrounded by unit membranes, but their contents appear different.The lacrimal gland of the musk shrew is located along the ventral side of the P portion of the Harderian gland. The lacrimal duct emerges from its anterior end, runs around the ventral and anterior aspects of the ear, crosses the A portion of the Harderian gapos; and, and finally opens at the posterior corner of conjunctival sacs. The lobules of the lacrimal gland comprise a branched duct system and terminal acini with two types of secretory cells: (1) acidic cells positive both for the periodic acid-Schiff reaction (PAS) and for Alcian blue (AB) and (2) neutral cells positive for PAS and negative for AB. Both cell types tend to make separate acini, but when present in the same acinus, the acidic cells occupy relatively peripheral positions in the acinus. Both cell types lack intercellular canaliculi.On the basis of the present study as well as previous descriptions in the literature, the author suggests that the mammalian lacrimal glands can be divided into two sets: (1) a Glandula lacrimalis superior with multiple secretory ducts associated with the upper eyelid and (2) a Glandula lacrimalis inferior with a single secretory duct opening into the lateral corner of the conjunctival sacs. These glands have a fundamentally similar histological structure; but in the rabbit, which possesses both sets of lacrimal glands, they are different. On the other hand, the secretory cells of lacrimal glands generally have no intercellular secretory canaliculi, which are characteristically present between the serous secretory cells of the salivary glands.

    Notes: The leg musculature from 11, 14, and 17 day chick embryos was analyzed histochemically to investigate the temporal and spatial distribution of various types of sulfated glycosaminoglycans present during skeletal muscle development. Types of glycans were identified by selective degradation with specific glycosidases and nitrous acid coupled with Alcian blue staining procedures for sulfated polyanions and with [35S]sulfate autoradiography. On day 11, radiolabeled chondroitin sulfate glycosaminoglycans are localized extracellularly in both the myogenic and connective tissue cell populations. By day 17, incorporation of [35S]sulfate into chondroitin sulfate is substantially reduced, although Alcian blue-stained chondroitin sulfate molecules are still detectable. With increasing age and developmental state of the tissues, radiolabeled and stained dermatan sulfate and heparan sulfate progressively increase in relative quantity compared to chondroitin sulfate both in muscle and in associated connective tissue elements. These changes in glycosaminoglycans correlate well with similar changes previously determined biochemically and further document the alterations in extracellular matrix components during embryonic skeletal myogenesis.

    Notes: The aquiferous system of representatives of the orders Dictyocer-atida, Dendroceratida, and Verongida has been studied to note its relevance to the systematics of the groups. The volume of the choanocyte chamber, the size and shape of the choanocytes, the number of choanocytes per chamber, the relative development of the mesohyl, and the features of endopinacocytes are estimated from scanning and transmission electron microscopic observations of representatives of most families of the three orders. Although the Dysideidae have a reticulate skeleton and were classified in the order Dictyoceratida, they are actually closer to the Aplysillidae (Dendroceratida) than to dictyoceratids. The anatomy and cytology of the Halisarcidae differ profoundly from those of these three orders and are clearly more closely related to nonkeratose sponges. Some changes in classification lead to a pattern with highly homogeneous orders that clearly differ in their anatomic and cytologic features, which does not support the hypothesis of a common origin of the “keratose” sponges.

    Notes: The wall of the asymmetrical saclike lungs of the fishes Polypterus and Erpetoichthys consists of several functionally different tissue layers. Their lumen is lined by a surface epithelium composed of (1) highly attenuated cells, termed pneumocytes I; (2) pneumocytes II with lamellar bodies, presumably indicating surfactant production; (3) mucous cells; and (4) ciliated cells. Underlying the pneumocytes I is a dense capillary net. The thin continuous endothelium of this net, together with the pneumocytes I, constitute the very thin blood-air barrier. The basement membrane of epithelium and endothelium fuse in the area of the blood-air barrier (thickness 210 m̈m). Secretory and ciliary cells form longitudinal rows in the epithelium. Below the zone with a gas-exchanging tissue, a layer of connective tissue containing collagen and special elastic fibers occurs. The blood vessels that give rise to or drain the superficial capillary plexus are located in this connective tissue. The outermost layer of the lung consists of muscle cells, a narrow inner zone with smooth muscle cells, and an outer, broader zone with cross-striated muscle cells. The lung is innervated by myelinated and nonmyelinated nerve fibers. The morphology of the gas-exchange tissue in the lungs of these primitive bony fish is fundamentally very similar to that of the lungs of tetrapod vertebrates. The morphologic observations are in close agreement with physiologic data, disclosing well-developed respiratory capacities. Structural simplicity can be regarded as a model from which the lungs of the higher vertebrates derived. In addition to respiratory function, the lungs seem also to have hydrostatic tasks.

    Notes: Effect of turning of the egg during incubation on development of the area vasculosa of the chick embryo was investigated. The size of the area vasculosa was determined by two methods: direct measurement with calipers and measurement of a template cut from the eggshell by use of an automatic surface area recorder. The effects of turning and additionally the effects of lowered temperature (36°C) on both growth of the area vasculosa by day 7 and embryo growth by day 14 of incubation were investigated. The effects of turning during a critical period for turning, from 3 to 7 days of incubation, were also recorded. Generally, failure to turn eggs retarded growth of the area vasculosa. Turning during the critical period stimulated the extent of growth of the area vasculosa by day 7 of incubation and of subsequent embryonic growth by day 14. Incubation at low temperature resulted both in reduced expansion of the area vasculosa and retarded embryonic growth in a pattern similar to that observed for unturned eggs. It is suggested that turning stimulates development of blood vessels in the area vasculosa via localized increases in blood pressure. The effect of a reduced area vasculosa is considered to retard embryonic development through restricted nutrient uptake from the yolk. The prevailing hypothesis that turning prevents deleterious membrane adhesions is questioned in light of these observations. It is suggested that the physiological basis for the need for turning lies in maximizing the growth rate of the area vasculosa to maximize yolk use and embryonic growth rate.

    Notes: Recessive mutant gene c in axolotls results in a failure of the heart to function because of abnormal embryonic induction processes. The myocardium in this mutant lacks organized sarcomeric myofibrils. The present study was undertaken to determine if developmental abnormalities were evident in other areas of the heart besides the myocardium. A detailed comparative survey of the structure of developing normal and mutant hearts, including the endocardium, its cellular derivatives, and the extracellular matrix, known as cardiac jelly, showed that in the mutant there are fewer than the normal number of endocardial cells lining the heart lumen, the number of mesenchyme cells is reduced, and the cardiac jelly area is greatly enlarged in the posterior part of the truncus adjacent to the ventricle.

    Notes: Plethodontid salamanders have unique nasolabial grooves that may function as “capillary tubes” to convey chemicals to the vomeronasal organ when these animals nose-tap. 3H-proline was placed at the base of these grooves in Plethodon cinereus, and autoradiography revealed large concentrations of radioactive material in the vomeronasal organs. There was no significant accumulation of radioactive material in the main olfactory epithelium. Salamanders with blocked nasolabial grooves lacked significant accumulation of material in their nasolabial grooves or vomeronasal epithelia, although some salamanders had radioactive material in the posterior portion of their vomeronasal organ that had entered through the internal nares. Anteriorly placed vomeronasal organs situated adjacent to the posterior limits of the nasolabial grooves may insure that nose-tapping primarily stimulates the vomeronasal sensory epithelium.

    Notes: A new mechanical model for function of the pharyngeal jaw apparatus in generalized perciform fishes is developed from work with the family Haemulidae. The model is based on anatomical observations, patterns of muscle activity during feeding (electromyography), and the actions of directly stimulated muscles. The primary working stroke of the pharyngeal apparatus involves simultaneous upper jaw depression and retraction against a stabilized and elevating lower jaw. The working stroke is characterized by overlapping activity in most branchial muscles and is resolved into three phases. Four muscles (obliquus dorsalis 3, levator posterior, levator externus 3/4, and obliquus posterior) that act to depress the upper jaws become active in the first phase. Next, the retractor dorsalis, the only upper jaw retracting muscle, becomes active. Finally, there is activity in several muscles (transversus ventrales, pharyngocleithralis externus, pharyngohyoideus, and protractor pectoralis) that attach to the lower jaws. The combined effect of these muscles is to elevate and stabilize the lower jaws against the depressing and retracting upper jaws.The model identifies a novel mechanism of upper jaw depression, here proposed to be the primary component of the perciform pharyngeal jaw bite. The key to this mechanism is the joint between the epibranchial and toothed pharyngobranchial of arches 3 and 4. Dorsal rotation of epibranchials 3 and 4 about the insertion of the obliquus posterior depresses the lateral border of pharyngobranchials 3 and 4 (upper jaw). The obliquus dorsalis 3 muscle crosses the epibranchial-pharyngo-branchial joint in arches 3 and 4, and several additional muscles effect epibranchial rotation. Five upper jaw muscles cause upper jaw depression upon electrical stimulation: the obliquus dorsalis 3, levator posterior, levator externus 3/4, obliquus posterior, and transversus dorsalis. This result directly contradicts previous interpretations of function for the first three muscles. The presence of strong depression of the upper pharyngeal jaws explains the ability of many generalized perciform fishes to crush hard prey in their pharyngeal apparatus.

    Notes: Changes in body morphology during growth and reproduction in the hydromedusa Eleutheria dichotoma are described in terms of variations in eight different characters: umbrella diameter, total surface area, tentacle area, umbrella area, tentacle knob diameter, number of embryos, and diameter and area of buds. Sexually (sex) and vegetatively (veg) reproducing medusae differ significantly in their body morphometrics. Statistically significant allometric relations exist between umbrella diameter and (1) central area (sex and veg); (2) tentacle area (veg); (3) total area (veg); (4) tentacle knob diameter (veg); (5) bud diameter; and (6) number of embryos. A significant correlation between umbrella diameter and area is also found in undetached buds. During sexual reproduction, umbrella area shows positive allometry and loses its correlations to total area, tentacle area, and tentacle knob diameter. Linear and nonlinear bivariate allometric coefficients allow estimation of total body size from only one or two easily measurable attributes, e.g., umbrella and tentacle knob diameter. Curve fitting by the classic allometric equation (y = bxc) is only negligibly worse than that obtained with a “full” equation (y = a + c), and statistical confidence is better.Chemical analyses for carbon and nitrogen content allow estimation of biomass from the projection area of the body surface. The relation factors are 1.06 μgC mm-2 (sex) and 1.14 μgC mm-2 (veg) for carbon and 0.293 μgN mm-2 (sex) and 0.287 μgN mm-2 (veg) for nitrogen. The C:N ratios are 3.6 and 4.0 for sexual and vegetative medusae, respectively. The use of allometric regression formulas to calculate surface areas and to relate these to carbon content provides quick estimations of body size in a microscopic animal.

    Notes: The neuronal organization of the accessory olfactory bulb (AOB), which receives sensory information from the vomeronasal organ, was described in a squamate reptile (Podarcis hispanica) by means of light microscopy. Using the Golgi-impregnation method, seven neuronal types could be distinguished:Periglomerular cells constitute a morphologically heterogeneous population of small neurons located between and around the glomeruli.The mitral cells are diffusely distributed in the AOB. Their cell bodies are usually located within the mitral cell layer, but some of them could be also observed in the plexiform layers. Mitral cells were classified into three subgroups on the basis of their sizes and dendritic tree morphologies. Thus, the “outer mitral cells” have the biggest cell bodies, and their distal secondary dendrites are mainly distributed rostrocaudally in the external plexiform layer. The “inner mitral cells” have large cell bodies, and their secondary dendrites are distributed dorsoventrally and are located deeper than those of the other two subgroups. The third type, the “small mitral cells,” is the smallest one among mitral cells in the AOB, and from their cell bodies, only two main dendritic trunks arise.The granule cells are composed of several categories based on their different cell body locations and dendritic tree morphologies. Thus, the “superficial granule cells” are located exclusively in the external plexiform layer and have small dendritic fields. The “middle granule cells” have fusiform cell bodies - situated in the internal plexiform layer - and present a wide dendritic projection area. Finally, the “deep granule cells” are distributed throughout the granule cell layer and include a great variety of dendritic tree morphologies.The distribution and morphological features of all neuronal types constituting the AOB of Podarcis were compared with those reported on other vertebrates. The results suggest that the lamination pattern and neuronal organization of the AOB in lizards are more similar to that of mammals than to that of the remaining vertebrates.

    Notes: Iridescent butterfly scales are structurally colored, relying upon the interaction of light with detailed architecture to produce their color. In some iridescent scales, the reflective elements are contained within the body of the scale and come in two basic forms, lattices that produce diffraction colors (analogous to those produced by opal), and stacks of laminae that produce thin-film interference colors (analogous to those produced by soap or oil films). Both structures are remarkably complex and precise, yet each is only part of the total edifice built by the cell that makes the scale.To understand better how a cell can produce lattices or thin-film laminae, I studied the development of iridescent scales from two lycaenid butterflies. The presence of diffraction and thin-film scales in the same family (and in some cases on the same individual) suggests that the two types must be developmentally related; yet these results yield no clear explanation as to how. The diffraction lattice appears to be shaped within the boundaries of the scale cell by means of a convoluted series of membranes in which the smooth endoplasmic reticulum plays an important part. The thin-film interference laminae appear to result from the condensation of a network of filaments and tubes secreted outside the boundaries of the cell. This paper outlines the developmental histories of both types of scale and discusses the developmental implications of the mechanisms by which they form.

Sound is produced by both sexes of the two species when the plectrum, paired conical teeth located along the anterior margin of the dorsally elevated seventh sternite, is struck against an elongate file, the pars stridens, on the under surface of the apical portion of each elytron. A second plectrum, on the sixth tergite, is well-developed in males of both species and is used by males to produce sound before and during mating.Sex-specific and species-specific differences in the sound produced is attributed to structural variation in the pars stridens and the elytra. The pars stridens determines frequencies, while the elytra may further modify the sound. The frequency range for male S. fulvus is 1,000 cycles per second (cps) through 13,000 cps and for male S. sordidus is 2,500 cps through 13,000 cps. The frequency range for female S. fulvus is 2,000 cps through 11,500 cps and for female S. sordidus is 900 cps through 11,500 cps.

    Notes: Light and electron microscopic observations of the lateral-line organs of larval Ichthyophis kohtaoensis confirmed earlier reports of the occurrence of two different types of lateral-line organs. One type, the ampullary organ, possesses 15-26 egg-shaped sensory cells. Each sensory cell extends a single kinocilium surrounded by a few microvilli into the ampullary lumen. This is in contrast to the ampullary organs of urodele amphibians that contain only microvilli. The second type of organ, the ordinary neuromast, has 15-24 pear-shaped sensory cells arranged in two to three rows. Each sensory cell shows a kinocilium that is asymmetrically placed with respect to both a basal plate and approximately 60 stereovilli. The sensory cells of ampullary organs are always separated by supporting cells; those of neuromasts are occasionally in contact with one another. Numerous (neuromasts) or few (ampullary organs) mantle cells separate the organs from the epidermal cells. Only afferent synapses are found in the ampullary organs whereas vesicle-filled fibers together with afferent nerve terminals are found in neuromasts. Both organs contain similarly sized presynaptic spheres adjacent to the afferent fibers. It is suggested that the neuromasts have a mechanoreceptive function, whereas the ampullary organs have an electroreceptive one.

    Notes: The cephalic muscles in three species of Entechinus, two species of Opheodrys, and Symphimus mayae display patterns of interspecific variation that are largely congruent with patterns of variation previously described for the skulls of these species. This congruence does not stem from direct correlation between the shapes of associated bones and muscles. In these colubrid snakes, most interspecific variations in muscle form involve changes in the shape or relative position of attachment points that appear unrelated to changes in the gross form of the bony surfaces forming the attachment points and produce no major changes in the architectural array of fibers in the muscle. Data presented here, combined with information from previous comparative studies of colubroid cephalic muscles, support the hypothesis that these muscles are limited in their potential variability by factors favoring parallel arrangements of fibers.

    Notes: Formation of lateral vessels in the esophageal region of Prosorhochmus americanus embryos and coelomogenesis in the pygidial region of larval Magelona sp. are examined and compared. Earliest vessel rudiments of P. americanus are composed of a compact band of mesodermal cells (mesodermal band), lying on a layer of extracellular matrix (ECM) and lacking intercellular junctions. Rudiments are surrounded by presumptive muscle cells. Rudiments at later stages of differentiation possess lumina of differing sizes formed by a separation of apposing cell apices (schizocoely). Aohagrens junctions are apparent between lining cels of vessels following cavitation, and overlying muscle cells exhibit many myofilaments. Mesodermal bands of the recognized coelomate, Magelona sp. consist of glycogen-rich, mesodermal cells resting on ECM and joined by adhaerens junctions. Some of the cells possess a rudimentary cilium. Coelom formation occurs as a splitting of the cell band as is the case for P. americanus. Recognition of an accepted mode of coelomogenesis in P. americanus, correlated with morphological details of adult nemertine vessels, affirms the view that nemertine vessels are coelomic homologues.

    Notes: Eggs of the asteroid Pisaster ochraceus demonstrate cortical granules, a thick vitelline membrane, and a poorly stained jelly coat similar to that seen on the eggs of other echinoderms. When fixed in the presence of alcian blue the jelly coat is seen to be made up of three regions, an inner layer consisting of a meshwork of fibres, a middle layer of thicker fibres, and a dense outer layer. At fertilization the cortical granules release their contents into the potential space between the vitelline layers and a low fertilization membrane consisting of the vitelline layer and a dense component of the corticle granule is formed. Initially the remaining contents of the corticle granules form an amorphous hyaline layer that fills the space between the plasma membrane and the fertilization membrane. At hatching a distinct hyaline layer is present. It persists at least to the bipinnaria stage and consists of four distinct layers. A similar layer is also located over much of the early embryonic endoderm but is lost from the regions involved in the formation of the mesenchyme cells, coelom, and mouth just before these events take place. Numerous large clear vesicles are located in the apex of all cells associated with a hyaline layer. Where the hyaline layer is lacking, only scattered vesicles are present suggesting that the vesicles may be involved in maintenance of the layer. Attempts to identify elements of the hyaline layer by immunofluorescence demonstrated that it appears to bind both antisera and control sera in a nonspecific manner.

    Notes: Six fiber types have been described in the ambiens muscle of red-eared turtles. These include one slow oxidative type, two fast oxidative types, two fast oxidative and glycolytic types, and one fast glycolytic type. Fiber types are non-randomly distributed throughout cross sections of the muscle. There is a decreasing gradient of oxidative staining and an increasing gradient of glycolytic staining along an axis from the superficial to deep regions of the muscle. The slow oxidative fibers are predominantly located within one or two fascicles of the superficial surface of the muscle. The fast glycolytic fibers are predominant in deep fascicles.In contrast to previous reports of histochemically monotypic intrafusal fibers in turtle muscle, ambiens muscle spindles have been observed containing one to eleven intrafusal fibers, including two fiber types. Fiber diameter and area are consistently smaller than observed in most extrafusal fibers. Spindles are predominantly located in superficial and cranial fascicles of the ambiens muscle and are located in regions characterized by extrafusal fibers with high oxidative activity.

    Notes: A study of neuromast ontogeny and lateral line canal formation in Oreochromis aureus and Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum reveals the existence of two classes of neuromasts: those that arise just before hatching (presumptive canal neuromasts, dorsal superficial neuromasts, gap neuromasts, and caudal fin neuromasts) and pairs of neuromasts that arise on each lateral line scale lateral to each canal segment at the same time as canal formation. In the anterior trunk canal segment, each presumptive canal neuromast is accompanied by a dorsoventrally oriented superficial neuromast forming an orthogonal neuromast pair. It is suggested that each of these dorsoventrally oriented superficial neuromasts is homologous to the transverse superficial neuromast row described by Münz (Zoomorphology 93:73-86, '79) in other cichlids. It is further suggested that the longitudinal lines described by Münz (Zoomorphology 93:73-86, '79) are derived from the pair of superficial neuromasts that arise during canal formation. Distinct changes in neuromast topography are documented. Neuromast formation, scale formation, and lateral line canal formation are three distinct and sequential processes. The distribution of neuromasts is correlated with myomere configuration; there is always one presumptive canal neuromast on each myomere. A single scale forms beneath each presumptive canal neuromast. Canal segment formation is initiated with the enclosure of each presumptive canal neuromast by an epithelial bridge which later ossifies. The distinction of these three processes raises questions as to the causal relationships among them.

A second cell type possessing clusters of apical cilia and lacking brush border and lysosomes is occasionally found between PI cells. The second proximal segment (PII) is formed of high columnar cells with brush border, regular spherical nuclei and numerous mitochondria located between well developed infoldings of the basal membrane. Single ciliary structures protrude into the lumen from PI and PII cells. The distal segment is lined by low columnar epithelium with few microvilli, regular spherical nuclei, numerous scattered mitochondria, and microbodies. The collecting tubule cells are cuboidal with few euchromatic nuclei, some mitochondria, and secondary lysosomes.

    Notes: The feeding mechanism of the South American lungfish, Lepidosiren paradoxa retains many primitive teleostome characteristics. In particular, the process of initial prey capture shares four salient functional features with other primitive vertebrates: (1) prey capture by suction feeding, (2) cranial elevation at the cranio-vertebral joint during the mouth opening phase of the strike, (3) the hyoid apparatus plays a major role in mediating expansion of the oral cavity and is one biomechanical pathway involved in depressing the mandible, and (4) peak hyoid excursion occurs after maximum gape is achieved.Lepidosiren also possesses four key morphological and functional specializations of the feeding mechanism: (1) tooth plates, (2) an enlarged cranial rib serving as a site for the origin of muscles depressing the hyoid apparatus, (3) a depressor mandibulae muscle, apparently not homologous to that of amphibians, and (4) a complex sequence of manipulation and chewing of prey in the oral cavity prior to swallowing. The depressor madibulae is always active during mouth opening, in contrast to some previous suggestions.Chewing cycles include alternating adduction and transport phases. Between each adduction, food may be transported in or out of the buccal cavity to position it between the tooth plates. The depressor mandibulae muscle is active in a double-burst pattern during chewing, with the larger second burst serving to open the mouth during prey transport. Swallowing is characterized by prolonged activity in the hyoid constrictor musculature and the geniothoracicus.Lepidosiren uses hydraulic transport achieved by movements of the hyoid apparatus to position prey within the oral cavity. This function is analagous to that of the tongue in many tetrapods.

    Notes: The cat hindlimb contains several long, biarticular strap muscles composed of parallel muscle fascicles that attach to short tendons. Three of these muscles -sartorius, tenuissimus, and semitendinosus -were studied by dissecting individual gold-stained fibers and determining the surface distribution of acetylcholinesterase-stained end-plate zones. In each muscle, fascicles were composed of muscle fibers that ran only part of the fascicle length and tapered to end as fine strands that interdigitated with other tapering fibers within the muscle mass. Most muscle fibers measured 2-3 cm in length. Fascicles of muscle fibers were crossed by short transverse bands of endplates (1 mm wide by 1-5 mm long) that were spaced at fairly regular intervals from the origin to the insertion of the muscle. The endplate pattern suggested that the fiber fascicles were organized into multiple longitudinal strips. In the sartorius, the temporospatial distribution of electromyographic (EMG) activity evoked by stimulating fine, longitudinal branches of the parent nerve confirmed that each strip was selectively innervated by a small subset of the motor axons. These axons appeared to distribute their endings throughout the entire length of the fascicles, providing for synchronous activation of their in-series fibers.

    Notes: This paper offers a model for the normalized length-tension relation of a muscle fiber based upon sarcomere design. Comparison with measurements published by Gordon et al. (′66) shows an accurate fit as long as the inhomogeneity of sarcomere length in a single muscle fiber is taken into account. Sequential change of filament length and the length of the cross-bridge-free zone leads the model to suggest that most vertebrate sarcomeres tested match the condition of optimal construction for the output of mechanical energy over a full sarcomere contraction movement. Joint optimization of all three morphometric parameters suggests that a slightly better (0.3%) design is theoretically possible. However, this theoretical sarcomere, optimally designed for the conversion of energy, has a low normalized contraction velocity; it provides a poorer match to the combined functional demands of high energy output and high contraction velocity than the real sarcomeres of vertebrates.The sarcomeres in fish myotomes appear to be built suboptimally for isometric contraction, but built optimally for that shortening velocity generating maximum power. During swimming, these muscles do indeed contract concentrically only. The sarcomeres of insect asynchronous flight muscles contract only slightly. They are not built optimally for maximum output of energy across the full range of contraction encountered in vertebrate sarcomeres, but are built almost optimally for the contraction range that they do in fact employ.

    Notes: Development and innervation of the lymph heart musculature of chicken, emu, rhea, and duck was studied by electron microscopy at posthatch ages from 3 days to adulthood. Development of innervation was monitored by acetylcholinesterase staining. Horseradish peroxidase was used to determine the extent of the transverse tubule network. Chickens were unusual among these birds in that lymph heart myocytes had already undergone a definitive differentiation and degeneration by 3 days. In ducks and ratite birds, lymph heart myocytes more slowly but progressively differentiate a cytomorphology that does not conform in all characteristics to cardiac or skeletal muscle and even resembles in some aspects, smooth muscle. Myofibrils become the dominant cytoplasmic structure, transverse tubules form ‘internal couplings’ with agranular reticulum cisternae, and ‘external couplings’ are formed between myocytes at myomyal junctions. The myomyal junctions also contain AChE-positive reaction product and some subplasmalemmal vesicles that lack a dense core. The lymph heart myocardium of ducks of 2 weeks demonstrated mitotic figures. In adult ducks the myosatellite cell numbers diminish and a characteristic pattern of myocyte degeneration appears. In juvenile ducks and ratites some myocytes differentiate to conductile cells, much as the conductile myocytes and myofibers of the blood heart. The lymph heart innervation is described, and the role of nerve in differentiation and maintenance of myocyte morphology in the lymph heart is discussed.

    Notes: The prominent accessory lobes of Lachi in birds are considered to be marginal nuclei; similar nuclei have been implicated in mechanoreceptive functions in snakes and lampreys. Reptile studies emphasized the involvement of the denticulate ligament with this mechanoreceptive function. This investigation examines the fine structure of the accessory lobes of Lachi in pigeons and their interaction with ligaments for features which might support such a mechanoreceptive function. In the lumbosacral area of the spinal cord, the lateral longitudinal ligaments and the ventral longitudinal ligament are hypertrophied. The ventral transverse ligaments are present only within the lumbosacral segments of the spinal cord and they interconnect with the lateral and ventral longitudinal ligaments. The lateral longitudinal ligament makes intimate contact with the spinal cord, and many glial processes from the spinal cord mingle with and are firmly attached to collagenous fibers of the ligament. The lobes lie dorsal to the lateral longitudinal ligament in the exact area where it interconnects with the transverse ligament. The lobe's multipolar neurons have a number of synaptic contacts but no unusual specializations were noted. Most of each lobe is composed of interdigitating saccular structures filled to varying degrees with flocculent material. The sacs are extensions of the cytoplasm of neuroglial cells, which also give rise to membranes surrounding neuronal processes and the sacs themselves. A possible functional relationship of the lobes and the ligaments of the lumbosacral spinal segments within the vertebral column is described.

    Notes: Several morphological and functional characteristics of the rat gastrocnemius medialis and tibialis anterior muscle were studied in young, adult, and old rats to assess the influence of growth. Antagonist muscles were studied to determine how changes of muscle architecture and functional characteristics are influenced by the demands of increased body weight and by the specific roles of these muscles in locomotion.Both muscles change drastically, for instance, in muscle length, volume, physiological cross-sectional area aponeurosis length, and their muscular geometry changes allometrically for both muscles. The relationships between muscle length, distance between origin and insertion, tendon length, and tibial length also change with growth. Both muscles are rather pennate, so that the increase of physiological cross-sectional area is a major factor in the determination of muscle length.No significant difference could be shown for fundamental physiological characteristics (i.e., functional characteristics normalized for muscular dimensions such as maximal work per unit volume). The changes of morphological and functional variables of both muscles parallel each other as is apparent from the index of antagonist characteristics, which is constant for all variables studied with the exception of muscle volume and tendon length.Consequently, the considerable and similar changes of TA and GM morphology and functional characteristics that take place during growth from approximately four weeks postnatally is not caused by changes of muscular material but by changes of the amount and architectural arrangement of the material involved.

    Notes: Between weaning and adulthood, the length and height of the facial skull of the New Zealand rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) double, whereas much less growth occurs in the width of the face and in the neurocranium. There is a five-fold increase in mass of the masticatory muscles, caused mainly by growth in cross-sectional area. The share of the superficial masseter in the total mass increases at the cost of the jaw openers. There are changes in the direction of the working lines of a few muscles. A 3-dimensional mechanical model was used to predict bite forces at different mandibular positions. It shows that young rabbits are able to generate large bite forces at a wider range of mandibular positions than adults and that the forces are directed more vertically. In young and adult animals, the masticatory muscles differ from each other with respect to the degree of gape at which optimum sarcomere length is reached. Consequently, bite force can be maintained over a range of gapes, larger than predicted on basis of individual length - tension curves. Despite the considerable changes in skull shape and concurrent changes in the jaw muscles, the direction of the resultant force of the closing muscles and its mechanical advantage remain stable during growth. Observed phenomena suggest that during development the possibilities for generation of large bite forces are increased at the cost of a restriction of the range of jaw excursion.

    Notes: The exocrine glandular system of the nymphs and the adults of Dysdercus cingulatus were studied. The D. cingulatus nymphs present 3 dorso-abdominal glands (lying under the 3rd, 4th, and 5th abdominal terga) and a pair of dorso-lateral pygidial glands on the pygidium (tergum 8). Histological and ultrastructural studies show that the upper and lower walls of the dorso-abdominal glands differ in structure; 3 types of cells were described: epidermal cells, unicellular secretory cells, and multicellular secretory units. Each of these exocrine glands plays an important part in the behavior of the nymphs (gregariousness, alarm, defense). The morphology of the various glands is discussed, and the chemistry of their secretions and their biological functions are considered.

    Notes: The fully developed oral disc of the tadpole of Bufo bufo consists of dorsal and ventral labia bearing, respectively, two and three ridges bearing numerous horny denticles, a horny beak provided with jaw sheath serrations, and large lateral papillae that are borne by two cutaneous plicae. As development progresses toward metamorphosis, these structures gradually regress until they disappear. Each cusped clavate labial denticle adheres, by means of a thin peduncle, to a similar labial denticle fixed in the lip and formed by a group of three or four cells that keratinize gradually and thus present remarkable differences in their morphology. Once all the cells of a group have been converted into horny tissue, the denticle sheds and is replaced by the underlying one. The beak serrations also are horny structures; each consists of a columnar band of cells which undergoes a gradual keratinization. The horny cells that detach themselves at intervals, being replaced by those of the underlying anlagen. The labial denticles and the beak serrations keratinize in two distinct ways. In the former, the desmosomal filaments appear to play an important role whereas, in the latter, the keratin seems to be synthesized “ex novo” by the ribosomes.

    Notes: Spermatogenesis of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus has been studied at the ultrastructural level after conventional staining of thin sections and after en bloc silver staining. Cytoplasmic dense bodies are present in all steps of spermatogenesis except in late spermatids and spermatozoa. These bodies are closely associated with the development of centrioles and of the acrosomal vesicle during spermiogenesis. After it first appears, acrosomal vesicle is linked to the nuclear envelope by electron-dense material and subsequently acquires a dense core. Later the acrosomal vesicle moves to the apical pole of the cell while maintaining its connection to the nucleus. Although chromatin was highly condensed in the head of spermatozoa, one or more nuclear vacuoles within the nucleus were found to contain uncondensed chromatin fibers. Silver nitrate stains several nuclear and cytoplasmic structures. In the nucleus it stains the nucleolus, specific regions at the periphery of the chromatin, the synaptonemal complexes, the nuclear basal fossa, and the nuclear vacuoles of spermatozoa. In the cytoplasm, silver stains the cytoplasmic dense bodies, the material that connects the acrosomal vesicle to the spermatid nucleus, the spermatozoan subacrosomal and periacrosomal materials, the intercellular bridges of spermatids, and the centrioles. Silver staining is abolished by pretreatment with pronase E, suggesting that silver staining is due to protein.

    Notes: Gonadal differentiation in premetamorphic Bombina orientalis is described and staged. The pattern of events during differentiation in Bombina differs in several respects from that previously described in other anurans. The Bombina gonad initially develops on the ventral surface of the vena cava, where there is no pre-existent somatic genital ridge prior to the arrival of the germ cells. The sexually undifferentiated gonad does not have a distinct cortex and medulla; instead, medullary cells ingress from the mesonephric blastema during sexual differentiation. Formation of a testis or an ovary appears to depend on the ability (or lack of ability) of the medulla to invade the germ cell-containing cortex. In the germ line, sexual differetiation can be recognized by a premeiotic increase in oogonial cell volume.

    Notes: Females of the marbled salamander, Ambystoma opacum, store sperm in exocrine glands called spermathecae in the roof of the cloaca. Eggs are fertilized by sperm released from the spermathecae during oviposition. Some sperm remain in the spermathecae following oviposition, but these sperm degenerate within a month and none persists more than 6 mo after oviposition. Thus, sperm storage between successive breeding seasons does not occur. Apical secretory vaculoes are abundant during the fall mating season and contain a substance that is alcian blue+ at pH 2.5. Production of secretory vacuoles decreases markedly after oviposition, and the glands are inactive by the summer months. Ambystoma opacum is a terrestrial breeder, and some mating occurs prior to arrival at pond basins where oviposition occurs. Mating prior to arrival at the ovipository site may prolong the breeding season, leading to fitness implications for both males and females. Females have opportunities for more matings, and the possibilities for sperm competition in the spermathecae are enhanced. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Seasonal changes in fine structure of the inner epithelial lining and capillary endothelium of the ovary revealed that ovarian fluid originated as a result of the secretory activity of the tissues. The ovarian cavity of A. alcicornis is lined with an ovigerous lamella epithelium and an ovarian wall epithelium. During the spawning period, both epithelia actively secreted proteinaceous substances which seemed to constitute the ovarian fluid. The substances appear to be synthesized in the rough-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum from the material which was transported from the blood capillary, taken into the epithelial cells by endocytosis, accumulated in secretory vesicles via Golgi apparatus in the cells, and finally released into the ovarian cavity by exocytosis. Microapocrine secretion was also observed to occur in both epithelia. Secretory activity of both epithelia by exocytosis and microapocrine secretion showed distinct seasonal changes. Active exocytosis and microapocrine secretion were observed during the spawning period (April-May). These activities slightly declined during the degeneration period (May-June) and were lost during the early recovery period (July). During the mid to late recovery period (October-March), there was some exocytosis but no microapocrine secretion. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: Cell surface morphology of hamster decidual cells isolated from day 8 implantation swellings was studied, using both phase-contrast and scanning electron microscopy. Two kinds of cells, fibroblastic and epithelioid, were identified in cultures examined by phase-contrast microscopy. Fibroblastic cells were spindle-shaped, having pointed or blunt terminals on one end and bifid or webbed projections at the other end. Epithelioid cells, on the other hand, were flat and discoid, having a distinctively ruffled plasma membrane. Further, the plasma membrane of epithelioid cells formed rope-like or flange-like processes. The significance of such adaptations is discussed. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: This study investigates the effect of developmental stage on thyroid hormone (TH)-mediated remodeling in the skeletal tissues of hemidactyliine plethodontid urodeles. Rate of morphogenesis was quantified in 17 metamorphic tissues for three different size-age classes of Eurycea bislineata larvae immersed in a metamorphic dosage of T4. Extent of morphogenesis after a 3-week immersion was also quantified in these tissues plus four larval ones for the full size range of E. bislineata larvae and for less complete size ranges of E. wilderae, E. longicauda guttolineata, Gyrinophilus porphyriticus, and Pseudotriton ruber larvae. Although all tissues respond more slowly with decreasing size/age, two tissue-specific effects are evident in all species. Larval ossifications are less inducible than metamorphic ossifications, and progressive metamorphic events are more retarded and, in some cases, more prone to abnormal morphogenesis than regressive ones. The first effect agrees with the prediction that tissues that naturally remodel at metamorphosis are more responsive to a metamorphic dosage of TH than those that respond at a larval stage and lower TH. The second effect agrees with the prediction that progressive morphogenesis is more likely to be impaired at small size than regressive morphogenesis, although the frequent discrepancies between individuals of similar size implicate developmental age more than size in this effect. Collectively, these two effects provide only equivocal support for the hypothesis that direct development in plethodontids evolved via precocious TH activity. However, the unexpected transition from ceratobranchial replacement to ceratobranchial shortening in medium-sized larvae suggests that the former pathway requires a longer period of cell specification at low TH. Since ancestral plethodontids appear to have been distinguished by an exceptionally long larval period with exceptionally low TH activity, this developmental prerequisite may in turn be partly responsible for their singular evolution of ceratobranchial replacement. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Otolith matrix that has been decalcified and air-dried, or critical-pont-dried, retains a periodic structure of repeating high and low matrix density.     Notes: Ultrastructural descriptions of the dipnoan heart are lacking. Many ultrastructural features of the heart of the Australian lungfish, Neoceratodus forsteri, resemble those of other lower vertebrates. The epicardial cells appear to be adapated for the exchange of material with the pericardial fluid. The most prominent features of the endocardial cells are numerous moderately electron-dense vesicles found within the cytoplasm. These organelles might have an endocrine function. The myocardiocytes are typically small. The banding pattern of the sarcomere is shared with most fish. The intercalated disc has a convoluted path and consists of desmosomes and fascia adherens. Caveolae are a prominent feature of the sarcoplasm. The sarcoplasmic reticulum is sparse, and T-tubules are lacking. Atrial myocardial dense bodies occur in vast numbers throughout the atrium and are occasionally seen in the ventricle. These vesicles are chromaffin-positive but fail to show catecholamine fluorescence. They are likely to contain peptides related to ANP. Subendothelial cells exhibiting catecholamine-specific fluorescence are scattered throughout the atrium. Ultrastructurally these cells contain many chromaffin-positive granules. Chromaffin cells represent another cell type with a probable endocrine function within the heart of N. forsteri. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: A complex of lymphoepithelial organs, the “anal tonsils,” is a consistent structure in the anal canal of the bottlenose dolphin, Tursiops truncatus. This complex occurs as a circumferential cluster of discrete tonsil like aggregations of lymphoid tissues, together with epithelial ducts (“crypts”) and occasional mucus secretory units in the extreme lower portion of the intestinal tract. These structures are concentrated in the segment lined by stratified squamous epithelium and extend for a variable distance cephalad from the anal aperture. The tonsils appear to be most active, judged by the amount of lymphoid tissue present, in young animals. Depletion of lymphocytes and cystic enlargement of the crypts, probably representing functional as well as morphological involution, is a consistent feature of older animals. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: The prenatal development of epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis was studied in embryos of different ago of two delphinid species (Stenella attenuata, Delphinus delphis), using light and transmission electron microscopical methods. The delphinid embryo is covered by a multilayered tissue formed by four different epidermal generations (periderm, stratum intermedium-I, str. intermedium-II, str. spinosum) produced by the str. basale. The first layer appears at about 40-50 mm of body length, the second type (s.i.-I) about 60-160 mm, and the third type (s.i.-II) is present at 160-500 mm. The first spinosal cells are produced at 225-260 mm body length; thenceforth, the epidermis increases continuously in thickness. Epidermal ridge formation begins about 400-mm body length. The development of the dermis is characterized by the early production of thin connective tissue fibers (40- 70-mm body length) and simultaneously the cutaneuous muscle matures in structure. Vascular development intensifies between embryos of 150-225 mm, and collagen production increases markedly in fetuses of 225-260-mm length. These events are paralledled by an increase in dermal thickness. The first elastic fibers can be recognized in the skin from the abdomen at about 600-mm body length. The development of the hypodermis is marked by very rapid and constantly progressing growth, beginning about 60-mm body length. The first typical fat cells appear in animals of 360-400 mm. Regional differences are obvious for all skin layers with regard to the flippers, where structural maturation proceeds more rapidly than in dorsal or abdominal regions. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: Functional comparative morphology of predatory legs in five species of water bugs (Ilyocoris cimicoides, Nepa cinerea, Ranatra linearis, Notonecta glauca, and Gerris lacustris) has been investigatd adn the following peculiarities of leg design were revealed.1Subcoxal articulation may be monoaxial (G. lacustris, N. glauca), or, in contrast to walking leg type, biaxial (N. cinerea, R. linearis, I. cimicoides); the first axis is oriented along the coxa (torsion axis), the second one is perpendicular to the first (non-torsion axis).2In contrast to walking leg type, which is characterized by cross suspension of the axis of coxal rotation in thoracal skeleton, this axis in G. lacustris is placed vertically. Non-torsion coxal axis in R. linearis is oriented strongly transversal. This axis directs the leg strike forward.3Legs in the majority of species are planar: Torsion axes of the coxa, femur, and tibia are placed in the same plane. Axes of rotation of consequent joints in I. cimicoides are reciprocally sloped. Therefore, the end of the leg outlines the spiral trajectory, when all angles of joints are opening (closing). This is an adaptation for clinging to the stems of water plants.4Passive adduction of the femur in the trochanter-femoral joint in N. glauca allows it to go around protuberances of the body wall, when the leg is sliding along them; recurrent femur movement during releasing from the obstacele is active due to the rt.fe muscle.5Only R. linearis has predatory legs, which permit the high-speed pursuit of potential prey; other species realize this function using the swimming legs, whereas the forelegs are used for the manipulation movements.6Muscle arrangement in the prothorax of different species reflects both leg construction and constructional constraints of body design. Powerful flexor muscles (co1, co2, co3, co5, fl.ti, et.ti in R. linearis; fl.ta, fl.ti in N. glauca; fl.ti in I. cimicoides) have long tendons and short muscle bundles, which originate on the leg wall. As a result, the powerful force is developed along the muscle tendon.7Some features of the predatory leg are common for the species studies: elongation of coxae, thickening of femora, and increase of the degree of junction of tibia and tarsus. The muscles, which move the distal segment of the leg, are reinforced and the sclerite of the fl.ti tendon is enlarged.     Notes: Piranhas, like many teleosts, change their diets on both ontogenetic and phylogenetic time scales. Prior studies have suggested that pervasive morphological changes in body form on a phylogenetic time scale may be related to changes in diet, but previous reports have found little shape change in piranhas on an ontogenetic time scale. We re-examine the post-transformational allometry of body form in one piranha, Pygocentrus nattereri (Kner), using the method of thin-plate splines decomposed by their partial warps. We find substantial evidence of allometry, primarily elongation of the mid-body relative to the more anterior and posterior regions, elongation of the postorbital and nape regions relative to the more anterior head and posterior body, and deepening of the head relative to the body. In addition to these pervasive changes throughout the body, there are some that are more localized, especially elongation of the postorbital region relative to eye diameter and snout, and an even more localized elongation of the snout relative to eye diameter. Initial dietary transitions are associated with changes in head and jaw proportions, but rates of shape change decelerate through growth, so that the final transition to a diet increasingly dominated by small whole fish appears associated with change largely in overall body size. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: Muscles in the body wall, intestinal wall, and contractile hemolymphatic vessels (pseudohearts) of an oligochaete anelid (Eisenia foetida) were studied by electron microscopy. The muscle cells in all locations, except for the outer layer of the pseudohearts, are variants of obliquely striated muscle cells. Cells comprising the circular layer of the body wall possess single, peripherally located myofibrils that occupy most of the cytoplasm and surround other cytoplasmic organelles. The nuclei of the cells lie peripherally to the myofibrils. The sarcomeres consist of thin and thick myofilaments that are arranged in parallel arrays. In one plane of view, the filaments appear to be oriented obliquely to Z bands. Thin myofilaments measure 5-6 nm in diameter. Thick myofilaments are fusiform in shape and their width decreases from their centers (40-45 nm) to their tips (23-25 nm). The thin/thick filament ratio in the A bands is 10. The Z bands consist of Z bars alternating with tubules of the sarcoplasmic reticulum. Subsarcolemmal electron-dense plaques are found frequently. The cells forming the longitudinal layer of the body wall musculature are smaller than the cells in the circular layer and their thick filaments are smaller (31-33 nm centrally and 21-23 nm at the tips). Subsarcolemmal plaques are less numerous. The cells forming the heart wall inner layer, the large hemolymphatic vessels, and the intestinal wall are characterized by their large thick myofilaments (50-52 nm centrally and 27-28 nm at the tips) and abundance of mitochondria. The cells forming the outer muscular layer of the pseudohearts are smooth muscle cells. These cells are richer in thick filaments than vertebrate smooth muscle cells. They differ from obliquely striated muscle cells by possessing irregularly distributed electron-dense bodies for filament anchorage rather than sarcomeres and Z bands and by displaying tubules of smooth endoplasmic reticulum among the bundles of myofilaments. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: In this report, the gonads of 32 glandulocaudine species, representing 18 genera, are compared with 11 outgroup characiform species. Through the presence of spermatozoa within the ovarian cavity, internal fertilization of the female is confirmed for the 16 genera for which mature ovaries were available. No outgroup ovary studied contains spermatozoa. All mature glandulocaudine testes have a large portion of the posterior testis, which is devoid of developing germ cells and spermatocysts (aspermatogenic), devoted to sperm storage, with the degree of partitioning in that region varying greatly within the group. All outgroup species examined have spermatozoa with spherical nuclei. With the exception of the species of the genus Planaltina, which also have spherical nuclei, all glandulocaudines have elongated nuclei, which vary among the species from 3.6 μm to 31.6 μm in length. Distinct sperm packets (spermatozeugmata) are formed in five genera by two different methods. In the genera Xenurobrycon, Tyttocharax, and Scopaeocharax, all of the tribe Xenurobryconini, the spermatozeugmata are formed within the spermatocysts and released fully formed. In all genera of the tribe Glandulocaudini, which includes Glandulocauda and Mimagoniates, loose spermatozoa are released which cluster into spermatozeugmata within the posterior storage areas. These morphological specializations are discussed within a phylogenetic framework as adaptations for internal fertilization and are hypothesized to be independently derived. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: Morphological and ultrastructural features of the salivary glands and proboscises of Placobdella ornata, Placobdella parasitica, and Desserobdella picta were studied by light and electron microscopy. Chemical composition of the salivary cells was investigated using a variety of histochemical techniques. Placobdella ornata and P. parasitica have compact salivary glands with discrete pairs of anterior and posterior glands, while the salivary cells contain one mucous and three proteinaceous secretions. Salivary glands of D. Picta are diffusely arranged and contain two mucous and two proteinaceous secretions. A cobalt-lysine forward-filling technique revealed that individual salivary cells consist of a roughly spherical soma and an elongated ductule. The majority of the internal space in a salivary soma is densely packed with spherical secretory granules which displace the cytoplasm to the periphery of the cell. Bundles of individual ductules enter the base of the proboscis on opposite sides and extend anteriorly. The ductules, also packed with secretory granules, are surrounded by microtubules associated with agranular endoplasmic reticulum, and merge with deep invaginations of the proboscis cuticle. The secretory granules are released at the end of these invaginations or pores. Pores were found on the tip, along the body, and on the luminal wall of the proboscises in all three species. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: Longitudinal and principal strain recordings were made in vivo at three sites (dorsal, anterior, and ventral) on the humeral midshaft of pigeons executing five modes of free flight: Take-off, level flight, landing, vertical ascent, and near-vertical descent. Strains were also recorded while the birds flew carrying weights that were 33%, 50%, or 100% of their body weight. The relative distribution of strain measured at the three surface midshaft sites and across the bone's cortex was found to be similar for all flight modes. Principal strains recorded in the dorsal and ventral humerus indicated considerable torsion produced by aerodynamic loading of the wing surface posterior to the bone. Measured torsional shear strains (maximum: 2,700-4,150 μ ε during level flight) were 1.5 times greater than longitudinal strains. In addition to torsion, the humerus is also subjected to significant dorsoventral bending owing to lift forces acting on the wing during the downstroke. Analysis of the cross-sectional distribution of longitudinal strains at the humeral midshaft cortex shows that the orientation of bending shifts in a regular manner during the downstroke, indicating that the wing generates progressively more thurst (vs. lift) later in the downstroke. This shift is less during take-off and vertical ascent when greater lift is required. Peak principal and longitudinal strains increased by an average of only 50% from landing to vertical ascending flight and take-off (e.g., dorsal humerus: -1,503 to -2,329 μ ε) and did not exceed -2,600 μ epsiv; at any site, even when the birds flew carrying twice their body weight. Strains recorded when birds flew at two times their body weight (100% BW load) were similar in magnitude to those recorded during vertical ascent and take-off and likely represent those developed during maximal performance. Strains developed within the midshaft were maximal in the anterodorsal and posteroventral cortices, not at the dorsal, ventral, and anterior sites at which strain was recorded. Consequently, maximum strains experienced by the bone are probably 20-25% greater than those recorded (ca. 3,200 μ ε), indicating a safety factor of about 3.5 for compressive strain failure. The much higher shear strains, however, indicate a lower safety factor (1.9), in which the bone's torsional strength is its most critical design feature. Finally, the magnitude and distribution of strains developed in the humerus of pigeons are generally similar to those recorded in the humerus of large fruit-eating bats during flight. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: Cephalometry was used to detect patterns of cranial growth in fetal bats that were stained differentially for bone and cartilage. Three developmental features distinguish embryos of taxa that echolocate nasally from embryos of taxa that echolocate orally: (1) the basicranium is retained ventral to the cervical axis, (2) the rostrum is retained below the basicranial axis, and (3) the lateral semicircular canals are rotated caudally. Together, the first two actions align the fetal nasal cavity with what will be the long axis of the adult body in flight. The third action aligns the lateral semicircular canals with the horizontal. In contrast, skulls of oral-emitting taxa are constructed such that the oral cavity is aligned with the long axis of the body in flight. The evolution of head posture and skull form in microchiropteran bats has been constrained by the demands of vocalization, i.e., ultrasonic echolocation. Accordingly, the ontogeny of the microchiropteran skull has been canalized along two distinct developmental paths - oral-emitting and nasal-emitting Baupläne. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: Assulina muscorum secretes morphologically altered shells when cultured in a medium with 5 mM caffeine. The siliceous scales, normally distributed in a regular overlapping pattern, are disorganized, thicker and wider than normal, and occasionally have incompletely silicified surfaces that appear irregular in profile in transmission electron microscopic ultrathin sections. The shape of the silica deposition vesicles (SDVs) in the cytoplasm is altered and they are less regularly arranged. The swollen appearances of the SDVs, and of nearby Golgi tubules, give additional evidence that caffeine affects the fine structural morphology of membranous secretory organelles and can disrupt their normal depositional activity. In addition to the greater thickness and width of the siliceous scales in caffeine-treated cells, the length and width of the shell are larger compared to controls, but the aspect ratio (length / width) is smaller. The latter is attributed to a larger increase in width relative to the increase in length of the caffeine-reated cells. Since some of the scales are deposited with the long axis laterally on the shell surface, in addition to being greater in width, this raises the interesting question of whether the morphology of the SDVs and the siliceous products influences the size and morphogenesis of the shell. Further research is needed to clarify the interaction of the SDVs with the cytoplasmic cytoskeletal system during shell morphogenesis. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: This study deals with some macroscopical, microscopical, and ultrastructural aspects of the spinal cord central canal of the German shepherd dog. The caudal end of the spinal cord is constituted by the conus medullaris, which may extend to the first sacral vertebra, the terminal ventricle, and the filum terminale. The latter structure is considered as internum (second to third sacral vertebrae) or externum (fifth caudal vertebra), according to its relation to the dura mater. Occasionally, there is a second anchorage which is close to the level of the sixth caudal vertebra. The central canal is surrounded by a ciliated ependymal epithelium, which differs depending upon the levels. The most caudal part of the filum terminale bears a columnar ciliated ependymal epithelium surrounded by two layers of glia and pia mater, which separate the central canal from the subarachnoid space. Microfil injections show a communication between the cavity and the subarachnoid space, as the plastic is able to pass through the ependymal epithelium. At the level of the terminal ventricle there are real separations of the ependymal epithelium, which seem to connect the lumen of the spinal canal with the subarachnoid space. These structures probably constitute one of the drainage pathways of the cerebrospinal fluid. The diameter of the central canal is related to the age of the animal. However, even in very old animals the spinal cord central canal reaches the tip of the filum terminale and remains patent until death. At the ultrastructural level the ependymal cells present villi, located on cytoplasmic projections, cilia, dense mitochondria, and oval nuclei. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: Female reproductive tracts of the viviparous neo-tropical onychophoran Peripatus acacioi have been examined at different times throughout the year, and the altering relationship between the developing embryo and the uterus is described. Depending on her age and time of year, the female may have one or two generations of embryos within her uterus. The uterine wall consists of a thin outer epithelium and basal lamina, three layers of muscles, and a thick basal lamina beneath an inner epithelium lining the uterus lumen. These layers are consistent along the length of the uterus apart from the inner epithelial lining, which varies according to position in the uterus and the developmental stage of embryos contained in the uterus. Early embryos are positioned along the length of the uterus and therefore have space in which to grow. During cleavage and segment formation, each embryo is contained within a fluid-filled embryo cavity that increases in size as the embryo grows. Morulae and blastulae are separated by lengths of empty uterus in which the epithelial lining appears vacuolated. Until the process of segment formation is complete, the embryos are attached to a placenta by a stalk and remain in the same part of the upper region of the uterus. As these embryos grow, the lengths of vacuolated cell-lined uterus between them decrease. Each embryo cavity is surrounded by the epithelial sac, the maternal uterine epithelium, which becomes overlaid by a thin layer of cells, the embryo sac, which is believed to be of embryonic origin. The placenta is a syncytial modification of the epithelial sac located at the ovarian end of each embryo cavity covered by the embryo sac and is analogous to the mammalian noninvasive epitheliochorial placenta. Segment-forming embryos have their heads directed toward the ovary. As the embryo gets longer during segment formation, its posture changes from coiled to flexed. Once segment formation is complete, the embryo loses contact with its stalk, an embryonic cuticle forms, and the embryo turns around so that its head is directed toward the vagina. The embryo escapes from its embryo sac and moves to the lower part of the uterus. In the lower part of the uterus, the straightened fetuses are first unpigmented but subsequently become pigmented as the secondary papillae on the body surface form and an adult-type cuticle forms beneath the embryonic cuticle. While the embryos are contained within their embryo cavities, nutrients are supplied by the placenta. Throughout development the mouth is open and in the mature fetus the gut is lined by peritrophic membrane and material is present in the gut lumen. Trachea have been observed only in fetuses that were ready for birth. Insemination, cyclical changes in the uterine epithelium, and the nature of the cuticle shed at parturition are discussed. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: The supporting elements of the avian propatagium were examined in intact birds and as isolated components, using static force-length measurements, calculated models, and airflow observations. The propatagial surface supported between Lig. propatagiale (LP) and brachium-antebrachium is equally resistant to distortion over the range of wing extension used in flight. The lengths LP assumes in flight occur across a nearly linear, low-stiffness portion of the force-length curve of its extensible pars elastica. In an artificial airflow, intact wings automatically extend; their degree of extension is roughly correlated with the airflow velocity. Comparisons between geometric models of the wing and the passive force-length properties of LPs suggest that the stress along LP blances the drag forces acting to extend the elbow. The mechanical properties (stiffness) of the LP vary and appear to be tuned for flight-type characteristics, e.g., changes in wing extension during flight and drag. Lig. limitants cubiti and LP combine to limit elbow extension at its maximum, a safety device in flight preventing hyperextension of the elbow and reduction of the propatagium's cambered flight surface. Calculations using muscle and ligament lengths suggest that M. deltoideus, pars propatagialis, via its insertions onto both the propatagial ligaments, controls and coordinates propatagial deployment, leading edge tenseness, and elbow/wing extension across the range of wing extensions used in flight. The propatagial ligaments and M. deltoideus, pars propatagialis, along with skeleto-ligamentous elbow/carpus apparatus, are integral components of the wing's extension control mechanism. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: A new approach to devising embryological staging systems allows improved phylogenetic comparisons of developmental patterns. As in traditional approaches, morphological features provide the defining criteria for stages, but unlike traditional normal tables, each stage is defined by no more than one or two morphological criteria that are fundamental developmental features of all teleosts. Additional developmental features that occur concurrently with the defining criteria of a stage are treated as variables potentially uncoupled from the defining criteria for that stage. This system is well suited to detect phylogenetic heterochrony and promises to increase our understanding of conserved vs. labile features in teleostean embryology. In this study, I explain the defining criteria for American shad and then make comparisons with other clupeoids. The development of American shad includes 35 stages extending from fertilization to metamorphosis. Comparisons with other clupeoids indicate that the developmental pattern of shad is representative of the early ontogeny of many clupeoids during the embryonic and yolk sac periods and may be conservative for the group. However, several concurrent features, particularly hatching, formation of neuromasts, and opercular development, vary in developmental timing among clupeoids. Comparisons indicate that shad embryos delay the development of these concurrent features relative to other clupeoids. Modifications of the developmental pattern for different species of clupeoids are heterochronic but their phylogenetic and adaptive significance is unknown. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: A description is provided of the fiber-type composition of several hindlimb muscles of the adult turtle, Pseudemys (Trachemys) scripta elegans. In addition, cross-section areas of each fiber type and an estimation of the relative (weighted) cross-section area (wCSA) occupied by the different fiber types are also provided. Seven muscles were selected for study, based on their suitability for future neurophysiological analysis as components of the segmental motor system, and on their homologies with muscles in other vertebrates. The test muscles were iliofibularis (ILF), ambiens (AMB), external gastrocnemius (EG), extensor digitorum communis (EDC), flexor digitorum longus (FDL), tibialis anterior (TA), and peroneus anterior (PA). Serial sections of these muscles were stained for myosin adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase), NADH-diaphorase, and alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase (α-GPDH), thereby enabling fiber-type classification on the basis of indirect markers for contraction speed and oxidative (aerobic) vs. glycolytic (anaerobic) metabolism. All muscles contained three fiber types: Slow oxidative (SO; possibly including some non-twitch tonic fibers); fast oxidative glycolytic (FOG); and fast glycolytic (Fg). There were at least 30% FOG and 50% FOG + Fg fibers in the seven muscles, the extreme distributions being the predominantly glycolytic ILF vs. the predominantly oxidative FDL muscle (ILF - 15.5% SO, 35.2% FOG, 49.3% Fg vs. FDL - 49.1% SO, 41.1% FOG, 9.8% Fg). As in other species, the test muscles exhibited varying degrees of regional concentration (compartmentalization) of the different fiber types. This feature was most striking in ILF. Pronounced compartmentalization was also observed in AMB, EG, PA, TA, and EDC, whereas the distribution of fiber types in the highly oxidative FDL was homogeneous. In five of the seven muscles, fiber size was ranked with Fg 〉 FOF 〉 SO. In terms of wCSA, which provides a coarse-grain measure of the different fiber types' potential contribution to whole muscle peak force, all muscles exhibited a higher Fg and lower SO contribution to cross-section area than suggested by their corresponding fiber-type composition. The largest relative increases in wCSA vs. fiber-type composition were in the ILF and AMB muscles. We conclude that the turtle hindlimb provides some interesting possibilities for testing for a division of labor among different muscles during different movements (e.g., sustained vs. ballistic), and for study of the behavior of the different fiber (and motor unit) types under normal and perturbed conditions. The relationships between the present results and previous findings on homologous muscles of the mammalian (cat, rat) and reptilian (lizard) hindlimb are discussed. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: During the breeding season, the terminal end of the ductus deferens of Calotes versicolor appears swollen and is comparable to the ampulla of the mammalian ductus deferens. Its anatomy was studied from paraffin sections. It differentiates along its length into five zones. The first has thick smooth muscle and pesudostratified epithelium; the second has luminal trabeculae with an epithelium showing evidence of secretory activity; the third has the epithelial mucosa abutting against the smooth muscle in the form of pocketlike indentations; the fourth has crypts between epithelial folds; and the fifth zone is a sphincter. The anatomy of this ampullary region is indicative of secretory as well as spermatophagous roles. It undergoes seasonal change and appears to be androgen-dependent. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: Endothermic heat production and the capacity to shiver develop soon after hatching in birds, permitting chicks to regulate their body temperature. Physiological studies have not clearly identified the developmental events causing this change in function. Here, we use electron microscopy to examine the development of structures involved in muscle activation, contraction, and metabolism coincident with the development of shivering thermogenesis. A stereological study was used to compare the ultrastructure of chicken iliofibularis before endothermic heat production was present (24 h before hatching) and 120 h later, when the iliofibularis had substantial capacity for shivering. Profound increases were found in the t-tubule system and terminal cisternae, mitochondrial cristae, and lipids. The number of triadic profiles increased 3.8-fold (7.6 ± 1.31/100 μm2 to 28.5 ± 2.90/100 μm2 fiber area). The surface area of cristae per mitochondrial volume doubled (12.0 ± 1.50 pm2/pm3 to 25.7 ± 1.84 μm2/μm3). Lipid droplets were rare in the iliofibularis of embryos about to hatch, but accounted for 4.4% of the muscle fiber volume in day 4 birds. We suggest that these ultrastructural changes more fully activate the iliofibularis, allow it to produce more heat both from calcium pumping and from contraction, and increase its endurance, thus permitting the muscle to be effective in thermogenesis. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: Five types of sensilla are situated on the apical area of the labial and maxillary palpi and galea of Cicidela sexguttata. Large, conical, and peg-like sensilla are in rows on the central region of each palpus. These sensilla have a hollow cuticular peg, with an apical pore and multi-innervation. This central region of palpal sensilla is surrounded by campaniform sensilla that are disc-shaped and small conical peg sensilla. A similar type of conical sensillum as the found in the palpal central region is situated around the periphery of the palpal apex and apex of the galea. This conical peg sensillum is located in a shallow depression and is structurally similar to the other peg sensilla, but it has a mechanoreceptor neuron attached to the cuticular base of the sensillum. A long, single, trichoid sensillum is situated in the center of the galea and is hollow, thick-walled, porous, and multi-innervated. The apices of the palpi and galea have a large number of dermal gland openings that actively secrete a substance during the feeding process of the tiger beetle. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: Changes in ovarian histology during the reproductive cycle of the viviparous lizard Sceloporus torquatus torquatus are described. In general, the variation in follicular histology observed during the seasonal cycle is similar to that of other lizards. Sceloporus t. torquatus exhibits a cycle in which small, previtellogenic follicles exist in the ovary from December to August. Vitellogenesis occurs between September and November, followed by ovulation from late November to early December. Parturition occurs the following spring. After ovulation, the remaining follicular cells form the corpus luteum and luteolysis did not occur until April-May. Follicular atresia is commonly observed in previtellogenic follicles with polymorphic granulosa, but occurs less frequently in follicles during late vitellogenesis. There are two germinal beds in each ovary. The yolk nucleus is evident in young oocytes as is a vacuolated ooplasma prior to vitellogenesis. Extensive polymorphism is observed in yolk platelets. Mast cells and secretory cells are observed in the thecal layer of the follicular wall as are melanocytes in the ovarian stroma. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: Ectoplacental cones isolated from embryos on the seventh day of pregnancy wer transplanted beneath the hepatic capsule of recipeint adult animals to document the morphological patterns of vascular invasion by the trophoblast in the absence of the maternal environment and the influence of its peculiar vasculature. Females, and females and males of Calomys collosus, a cricetid rodent, were used, respectively, as embryo donors and recipient animals. Three to 5 days later, the grafted regions were excised and processed for light and electron microscopy. Invasion of the liver parenchyma by the trophoblast progressed along the vascular beds, associated with gradual phagocytosis of hepatic cells, greatly favoring the morphological characterization of invasive steps exhibited by the trophoblast to access the different kinds of vessels, to trespass the various vascular components and the different levels of the surrounding hepatic parenchyma. It is possible that either in utero during the establishment of embryomaternal circulation in early pregnancy or ex utero under experimental conditions, the trophblast exhibits similar vascular invasion behavior. In view of this, our findings may contribute to a better understanding of trophoblast cell migration to the maternal blood supply as well as the role of the trophoblast in the establishment of the placental circulation during pregnancy. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: A commentary is provided on the segmental motor system of the turtle Pseudemys (Trachemys) scripta elegans with an emphasis on neuronal, neuromuscular, and muscular mechanisms that control the development of force under normal, fatiguing, and pathophysiological conditions. For the central neuronal component of the segmental motor system, it has recently been shown that intracellular analysis of the firing properties of motoneurons and interneurons can be undertaken for relatively long periods of time in in vitro slices of the lumbosacral spinal cord of the adult turtle. In other less reduced in vitro preparations, analyses are available on complex motor behaviors generated by the isolated spinal cord. These behaviors of spinal neuronal networks are analogous in key aspects to those generated by the isolated in vivo cord, and by the cord in intact preparations. These results suggest that the neuronal components of the segmental motor system can now be studied from the cellular/molecular level of analysis in in vitro slice preparations to the systems level in conscious, freely moving animals. The in vitro approach can also be used for the analysis of cellular mechanisms in suprasegmental brain structures, which contribute to the control of voluntary movement. For the peripheral neuromuscular component of the segmental motor system, information is now available on muscle fiber types and selected aspects of sensory innervation, and it is feasible to study the mechanical and biochemical properties of motor units. As such, the turtle presents a valuable model for exploring interrelations between the neuronal and mechanical components of the segmental motor system of the generalized tetrapod. A prominent feature of these recent developments is the extent to which they have been deriven by findings that have emphasized an evolutionary conservation of motor-control mechanisms extending from ion channels, at the cellular level, to the control of multijointed movements at the systems level of analysis. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: The parasynaptic union of chromosomes associated with the formation of a karyosphere is demonstrated in the spermatocytes of Phanaeus.The twelve V-shaped leptotene threads are polarized with their apices embedded in one plasmosome-like body, their distal ends in another (primary and secondary caps, respectively), and undergo a conjugation of the parasynaptic type. The distal ends of the chromosomes are freed from their attachment in the secondary cap. The six pachytene loops retain their polarized configuration.The basichromatin of the pachytene chromosomes appears ultimately to be withdrawn to form the karyosphere comprising six chromatic bodies within an oxychromatic «plasmosome,» the latter probably derived from the primary cap. The two caps are believed to arise from the chromosomes. The primary cap apparently becomes incorporated again in the chromosomes; the secondary cap, together with linin remnants of the pachytene chromosomes, disintegrates in the nucleus as residual chromatin.In the dissolution of the karyosphere six ring-shaped tetrads emerge arranged in a temporarily connected chain, giving under certain conditions, the misleading impression of twelve components arranged end to end. The entire content of the karyosphere appears to be employed in the formation of the chromosomes; no visible plasmosome remains.

    Notes: Embryological study of bullfrog tadpoles collected from various parts of the United States has shown the existence of local races which differ markedly in regard to the time of occurrence and character of the developmental processes involved in the formation of the definitive testis of the male individuals. Those races in which the gonads of the two sexes are easily distinguished in early larval stages are called differentiated. Other local races show a peculiar gonadic development chiefly affecting the males, the definitive testis sometimes not appearing until near the end of the second year of larval life. Such races are called undifferentiated, because the morphological features of the definitive testes are not established until late. The larvae first develop a peculiar gonad (progonad) which later degenerates and is replaced by the definitive testis. All male animals of the undifferentiated strains exhibit the gonad cycle.The progonad varies among the local frog races in regard to the length of persistence and degree of differentiation attained before undergoing degeneration. Its germ cells may exhibit a typical male maturation cycle ending in degeneration, or the cells may differentiate along both male and female lines or remain sexually neutral.The development and differentiation of the progonad in the various races are described and a detailed account given of the origin of the definitive testis. The problems of sex differentiation and continuity of the Keimbahn in anurans are discussed.

    Notes: The primordial germ cells of urodeles and anurans can occupy comparable positions in the embryo only in very early stages of development, if at all. When first recognizable as reproductive elements, their situation in the two amphibian orders is quite strikingly different.The germ cells first become recognizable in urodeles in the medial edge of the lateral mesoderm; there is no evidence that their position previous to this time is other than mesodermal. In the anura they are entodermal in association during early development; they are finally separated from the dorsal portion of the roof of the archenteron to form a single axial germ-cell cord. No amphibian species studied showed a mode of origin different from that characteristic of its order.The so-called migration of the amphibian germ cells to their definitive situation is interpreted as the result of growth shiftings of related parts. Germ cells do not migrate independently through the tissues. Aberrant or ectopic cells for the most part result from failures or faulty correlations of growth processes. Certain aberrant cells of the caudal portion of the body in urodeles indicate the inclusion of sex elements in the ventral as well as in the lateral mesoderm.

    Notes: The musculature of the ophidian head is a fairly complex structure, due to the specialization of the skull and the peculiar movements and motions made possible by the high degree of streptostylism.This musculature has been derived from the lacertilian type by a splitting and a shifting of the original elemental muscle masses of this group. Most of the muscles are clearly homologous with those of the Lacertilia. Some cannot be homologized by a study of the mature forms.The greatest differences lie in the separation of the muscle masses in the ophidia, as compared with the undivided masses in the Lacertilia. Since the jaw movements of the Lacertilia are rather simple, there is no need for any subdivision or splitting of the jaw muscles, but with the complex movements of the ophidia this becomes necessary.A few of the ophidian muscles appear to be neomorphs, as no key to their origin could be determined by a comparison with lacertilians.
