Notes: ---2-Alkyl-1-methylquinazolinium hexafluorophosphates 9 are deprotonated by sodium or potassium hydride to afford solutions of 2-alkylidenedihydroquinazolines 10, which were investigated by NMR spectroscopy. Trapping with methanesulfonyl azide (5a) of 10 in situ or subsequent treatment with trifluoromethanesulfonyl azide (5b) gives mixtures of colourless (15) and intensely yellow N-sulfonylimino-1,4-benzodiazepines 16 along with products due to cleavage of the exocyclic double bond of 10, viz. 11 and 13. The ethylidene compound 10b yields the bicyclic products 18 and 19, apparently by complex sequences of reactions that are triggered by removal of the acidic proton at C-2 of 16b and 16f. The structures of the products are based on spectroscopic evidence and X-ray diffraction analyses performed on 15b, 16d, 16e, and 19.

Notes: ---A set of allene-tethered benzoyloximes (5) has been treated with nBu3SnH. Depending on their substitution pattern, a wide range of compounds has been obtained. If the stannyl radical adds on the allene, the C-centred radical thus formed undergoes either a 5-exo ring closure to give the cyclopentene derivatives 7 or a 6-endo ring closure onto the N atom to give the dihydropyridines 8. If the stannyl radical adds on the benzoyl moiety, an iminyl radical is formed which leads to the 3H-pyrroles 9 and the alkylidene-pyrrolines 10. Steric effects as well as polar effects are the factors governing the reaction course.Supporting information for this article is available on the WWW under //http://www.wiley-vch.de/contents/jc_2046/2000/99373_s.pdf or from the author.

Notes: ---An approach to the synthesis of aplykurodins, ichthyotoxic marine lactones, is presented. The carbon framework was derived from vitamin D3 by conversion of the readily accessible allyl alcohol 13 to the protected Grundmann's hydroxy ketone 22 and subsequent introduction of the C2 side chain through a Pd0-promoted coupling. Highly stereoselective hetero Diels-Alder reaction with O21 produced the key intermediate peroxide 25. Functional group transformations, coupled with a series of chemo- and stereoselective reactions, finally resulted in the synthesis of the unnatural analogue 17,18-dihydro-3,9-di-epi-aplykurodinone B (6).

Notes: -Catenanes composed of two, three, five, or seven interlocked macrocycles have been synthesized in yields ranging from 1 to 30%. Their template-directed syntheses rely on a series of cooperative noncovalent bonding interactions between π-electron rich 1,5-dioxynaphthalene ring systems and π-electron deficient bipyridinium units which are incorporated within the macrocyclic components. The interlocked structure associated with one of the [3]catenanes was demonstrated unequivocally by single crystal X-ray analysis which also revealed the formation of polar stacks stabilized by intermolecular [π···π] interactions. The number of interlocked components of each catenane was determined by liquid secondary ion, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization/time-of-flight, and/or electrospray mass spectrometries. The absorption spectra, emission spectra, and electrochemical properties of the macrocyclic components and of the catenanes have been investigated. Two kinds of charge-transfer absorption bands (intramolecular in the cyclophanes containing electron-donor and electron-acceptor units, intercomponent in the catenanes) have been found. Such charge-transfer excited states are responsible for the quenching of the potentially fluorescence units of the cyclophanes, and of the crown ethers in the catenanes. Charge-transfer electronic interactions are also evidenced by the electrochemical behavior. Correlations among the redox potentials of the various compounds are reported and discussed.

Notes: ---Treatment of salts 1a-b with Grignard reagents gives, after reduction of the resulting unstable dihydropyridines 7, the tetrahydropyridines 8a-c, with modest selectivities but in very few steps and under practical conditions. Higher stereo- and regioselectivities are obtained with salt 1c which gives the tetrahydropyridines 15a-e. In addition, the dihydropyridine intermediates 11b cyclize to give the new oxazolidine derivatives 12a-e, which turn out to be good precursors of the 2,6-trans-disubstituted tetrahydropyridines 21a-e. Selective syntheses of (-)-lupetidin, (+)-solenopsin, and indolizidines (-)-5 and (-)-6 are presented as representative examples of applications.

Notes: In order to investigate nonlinear optical properties, in particular second harmonic generation (SHG) of organometallic complexes, numerous dipolar monocationic sesquifulvalene complexes of the general form [Mc-Z-C7H6]+ have been synthesised (Mc = metallocenyl), wherein the metallocenyl moiety Mc acts as an electron donor, and the tropylium cation C7H6+ as an electron acceptor. The mutual electronic influence of the donor and the acceptor groups is warranted by a linking spacer Z, which is a single bond [Mc = CpFeC5H4 (4a); Mc = CpRuC5H4 (4b)], an unsaturated bridge containing olefins [Z = (E-CH=CH)n: n = 1, Mc = CpFeC5H4 (25a), Mc = CpRuC5H4 (25b); n = 2, Mc = CpFeC5H4 (26); n = 3, Mc = CpFeC5H4 (27)], or thiophene units [Z = 2,5-C4H2S, Mc = CpFeC5H4 (28); Z = 5,5′-(2,2′-C4H2S)2, Mc = CpFeC5H4 (29); Z = 2-(5-E-CH=CH)C4H2S, Mc = CpFeC5H4 (30)]. For the salts of 4a·BF4, 4b·PF6 and 25a·PF6 X-ray structure determinations have been performed [4a·BF4: orthorhombic, Pnma, = 21.75(2), b = 9.900(2), c = 6.881(3) Å, V = 1482.0(15) Å3, Z = 4; 4b·PF6: monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 8.104(3), b = 18.206(14), c = 11.228(4) Å, β = 107.59(3), V = 1579.1(15) Å3, Z = 4; 25a·PF6: triclinic, P1bar, a = 10.067(6), b = 10.496(6), c = 11.418(6) Å, α = 94.07(4), β = 110.96(4), γ = 102.88(5)°, V = 1083.1(11) Å3, Z = 2]; the solid state structures indicate an almost coplanar arrangement of the organic π-system. Cyclic voltammetry studies reveal an irreversible one-electron reduction and an electrochemically reversible one-electron oxidation step for the ferrocenyl derivatives, whereas the ruthenocenyl derivatives demonstrate an irreversible two-electron oxidation. The redox potentials clearly indicate that the oxidation occurs at the metallocene unit, and the reduction is localised on the tropylium entity. In the electronic absorption spectra two intense bands are observed in the region 400 〈 λ 〈 900 nm which undergo strong negative solvatochromic shifts. The origin of the high-energy absorption band is assumed to be an interligand charge-transfer (LL-CT) transition, and the low-energy absorption band is assigned to a donor-acceptor charge-transfer (DA-CT) transition. Whereas the LL-CT is continuously shifted to lower energy with increasing spacer length, the energy of the DA-CT approaches a limiting value. A comparable phenomenon is also observed for the difference between the oxidation and reduction potentials obtained from electrochemical studies. Investigations concerning the nonlinear optical properties of the dipolar cationic sesquifulvalene complexes by means of hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) indicate that the ferrocenyl derivatives fluoresce due to two-photon absorption whereas the ruthenocenyl congeners exhibit second harmonic generation with considerably larger first hyperpolarizability which is partly resonance-enhancement based.

Notes: ---The electrochemical reduction-Bamberger substitution of 2-nitroanisole in 1 M H2SO4 yields predominantly 2,5-dimethoxyaniline, not the expected 2,4-isomer. The selectivity was found to be acid- and solvent-dependent, with lower acidity and less polar solvents favoring the formation of 2,4-dimethoxyaniline during galvanostatic electrolysis. A mechanistic working hypothesis involving an ortho-quinone monoimine dication is presented to direct further synthetic studies.

Notes: ---The syntheses of the diaryls 14 and 21, substituted by two ω-cyanoalkyl chains (one on each ring), are described. Treatment of the unsymmetrical diaryl 14 with NaN(Me)Ph in a Thorpe-Ziegler reaction failed to give any definite product. Under the same conditions the symmetrical diaryl 21 led to an isomeric mixture of dimeric enaminonitriles 24. Notes: Neutral trans-cyanide alkenylcarbyne complexes 2a and 2b have been prepared by reaction of the complex 1a and 1b with NaCN or [Bu4N]CN. The reaction of complexes 2a and 2b with an equimolar amount of the acetonitrile complexes 1a and 1b in CH2Cl2 leads to the cationic cyanide-bridged bis(alkenylcarbyne) di-tungsten complexes 3a-d. Diisocyanide-bridged bis(alkenylcarbyne) di-tungsten complexes 4a and 4b have been synthesized by the reaction of complexes 1a and 1b with 0.5 equivalents of the diisocyanide 1,4-(CN)2C6H4. IR as well as 1H-, 31P{1H}-, 13C{1H}-, and 183W-NMR data are reported. The spectroscopic data show that in the dinuclear complexes 3a-d, the bridging CN group and the alkenylcarbyne units are located in trans positions, while in the dinuclear complexes 4a and b, the isocyanide groups of the bridging ligand 1,4-(CN)2C6H4 and the two alkenylcarbyne moieties are cis. The 183W chemical shifts of complexes 2a, 2b, 3a-d, 4a, and 4b were obtained through two-dimensional indirect 31P, 183W NMR recording techniques. A downfield shifting of 183W resonances of the cyanide-bridged dinuclear complexes 3a-d with respect to the mononuclear ones, 2a and 2b, was observed. The δ183W of isocyanide bridging dinuclear complexes 4a and 4b appear at higher field than those of the corresponding mononuclear cyanide 2a and 2b in accordance with the higher π-acceptor electron properties of the isocyanide ligand. The electrochemical behaviour of all the complexes has been investigated by cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential electrolysis in aprotic media and at a Pt (or vitreous C) electrode. Complexes 1, 2, or 3 undergo multi-electron irreversible oxidation processes involving anodically induced proton dissociation from the alkenylcarbyne ligands, and irreversible cathodic processes are also observed for all the complexes. The order of the redox potentials reflects that of the net electron π-acceptor/σ-donor character of the ligands and the ligating alkenylcarbynes are shown to behave as remarkably strong π-electron acceptors (even stronger than CO).

Notes: The complexes formed by [(1)-2,3-P2Mo2W15O61]10- with vanadium(IV), manganese(II), cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II), and zinc(II) were synthesized. They were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV/Vis and 31P NMR spectroscopy. Their electrochemical studies are complemented by those of the previously synthesized iron(III)- and Mo(VI)-substituted complexes. Among the main conclusions from the electrochemistry of all these compounds, it can be pointed out that only the iron(III) and the copper(II) ions within the complexes are reducible in the same potential domain as the molybdenum(VI) moieties. In the case of the iron(III) complex, it has been possible to obtain a reversible overall three-electron process on the first wave of the oxometalate by varying the pH of the solution. In contrast, copper can be deposited from the corresponding complex. Substitution of [(1)-2,3-P2Mo2W15O61]10- with vanadium(IV), manganese(II), iron(III), cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II), zinc(II) and molybdenum(VI) gives a series of complexes in which the trimetallic moiety constituting one of the ‘‘caps’’ of the polyoxometalate contains cations different from the remaining tungsten skeleton. The electrochemical properties of these complexes are modulated by this particular constitution.

Notes: Chemical reduction of the cluster complexes [Co4(CO)3(μ3-CO)3(μ3-C8H8)L2] 3 (L2 = C8H8), 4 (L = CO), 5 (L2 = C6H8) and 6 (L2 = 6,6-Ph2C6H4) gives the trinuclear anion [Co3(CO)3(μ2-CO)3(μ3-C8H8)]- (7) in high yield. It is proposed that formation of 7 occurs via degradation of the radical anions [3]- - [6]-, which can be generated reversibly via cyclic voltammetry. The anion 7 is stabilised by the facial C8H8 ligand and does not degrade further. Reaction of 7 with [(C5Me5)Ru(NCMe)3][BF4] results in the formation of [Ru(C5Me5)Co3(CO)3(μ3-CO)3(μ3-C8H8)] (8). The crystal structures of [NEt4]+-7, [(C5H5)2Co]+-7, and 8 were determined. In 7 and 8, the cyclooctatetraene ligand is coordinated to the Co3 face of the cluster in the facial mode.

Notes: The reaction of oxalic amidines R1-N=C(NHR2)-C(NHR2)=N-R1 with CH3MgX followed by uptake of CO2 results in the formation of the trimeric carbamato complexes [R1-N=C(NR2-COO)-C(NR2COO)=N-R1]3Mg3(THF)6 (2a: R1 = R2 = Ph; 2b: R1 = R2 = p-tolyl) as the thermodynamically stable final products of the reaction. Their X-ray crystal structures show that the three metal centres are in a linear arrangement. The central magnesium ion is octahedrally surrounded by six O-donor atoms of the μ2-carbamato bridges, while both peripheral magnesium ions are facially coordinated by three O-donor atoms of the carbamato groups and three THF molecules. This coordination sphere can be considered as a structural model for the active centre in the ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase enzyme. Compound 2a reacts with ZnCl2 or CoBr2, with CO2 elimination, to form dimeric complexes of the type [X2M(oxalamidinato)MX2][Mg(DMF)6] (M = Zn, Co; X = Cl, Br). X-ray crystal structure analyses show that the d-metals are tetrahedrally coordinated. The magnesium-bromide-containing intermediates in the formation of 2a and 2b are able to transfer CO2 to acetophenone, thus simulating the CO2 activation step in enzymatic biotin-dependent carboxylation reactions.

Notes: The synthesis and characterization of manganese complexes of β-octafluoro-meso-tetraarylporphyrins are reported. The presence of the electron-withdrawing β-fluorine atoms induces a very large shift of the redox potential for the oxidation of the manganese(II) derivatives. With the meso-aryl group bearing two ortho-chlorine atoms (2,6-dichlorophenyl) or five fluorine atoms (pentafluorophenyl), metal complexation leads to the isolation of pure manganese(II) compounds. The stability and catalytic activity of these new derivatives have been studied using hydrogen peroxide and iodosylbenzene as oxidants, and standard substrates for epoxidation and hydroxylation reactions. The results are compared to those obtained with the β-hydrogenated analogs under the same conditions. In the case of hydrogen peroxide, the high level of porphyrin degradation prevents efficient catalytic activity. With iodosylbenzene as oxidant, both stability and epoxidation are similar to those of the β-hydrogenated porphyrins, however, a substantial improvement in the efficiency of the hydroxylation of cyclohexane is observed with up to 33 turnovers with (perfluorotetraphenylporphyrin)manganese(II).

Notes: ---A short enzymatic route for the synthesis of L-fucose analogs modified at the nonpolar terminus is reported. In particular, fucose derivatives bearing extended linear (1b) and branched (1e) saturated, or various unsaturated (1c, 1d) aliphatic chains have been prepared, in order to increase hydrophobic contacts. The rather general approach involves a sequential application of the recombinant enzymes L-fuculose 1-phosphate aldolase (FucA) and L-fucose ketol isomerase (FucI) from E.coli. Enantiomerically pure L-fucose analogs have been prepared in up to 30% overall yield starting from the appropriate hydroxyaldehyde precursors and dihydroxyacetone phosphate as readily available components. Unsaturated 2-hydroxyaldehydes have been efficiently prepared by alk(en/yn)yl Grignard addition to cinnamaldehyde followed by controlled ozonolysis of the styrene fragment.

Notes: ---Preparation of the 15-membered cycle (E,E,E)-1,6,11-tris[(2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl)sulfonyl]-1,6,11-triazacyclopentadeca3,8,13-triene (8) is reported. This cyclic triolefin forms a stable Pd0 complex 9 which catalyzes several cross-coupling reactions and can be recovered. Anchoring to a polystyrene framework affords a solid version of the catalyst, which is recovered by simple filtration and reused without loss of catalytic activity.

Notes: The photophysical, photochemical and redox properties of the title complexes were investigated. Resonance Raman measurements revealed the lowest-energy electronic transition to possess σ→π* character. At low temperatures, long-lived near-IR emission was observed. Irradiation in solution results in homolytic splitting of a Ru-Ru bond as the primary step, followed by secondary reactions of the radical fragments depending on the experimental conditions. (Spectro)electrochemical investigations of the title species proved that the axial [RuCp(CO)2] groups exert a stabilising influence on the corresponding radical cations, while destabilising the corresponding radical anions, compared to the redox behaviour of other ruthenium complexes of this type.

Notes: -Deprotonation of the 2-cycloalkylbenzothiazolium perchlorates 1f-h with sodium hydride in the presence of methanesulfonyl azide (3) affords the spirocyclic dihydro-1,4-benzothiazines 9f-h together with small amounts of the 2-iminobenzothiazole 5. The 2-cycloalkylidenedihydrobenzimidazoles 11e-h are generated by deprotonation with potassium hydride from the corresponding 2-cycloalkylbenzimidazolium salts 10e-h, and trapped with 3 to yield the zwitterions 12e-h. Whereas 12h is thermally unstable, 12e-g are isolated and thermolysed at 20-80 °C. The cyclopropyl zwitterion 12e decomposes in an ill-defined way, only at temperatures above 80 °C. In contrast, 12f,g, and, in particular, 12h, decompose more readily to furnish the products of ring expansion (13f-h) and those of a [3 + 2] cycloreversion (6 and 14) of intermediate spirocyclic triazolines. Products that might be indicative of the intervention of hypothetical zwitterions of type 8 cannot be detected.

Notes: -2,3-Dihydro-3-imino-2-methylenepyridines, generated by thermal extrusion of SO2 from 1,3-dialkyl-1,3-dihydroisothiazolo[4,3-b]pyridine 2,2-dioxides (1,3-dialkylpyridosultams), underwent [1,5] hydrogen shifts, which led to 3-alkylamino-2-vinylpyridine derivatives. Cycloalkanespiro-3-pyridosultams 12, which were easily obtained by alkylation of pyridosultams with α,ω-dihaloalkanes, gave, in a similar reaction, 3-alkylamino-2-cycloalkenylpyridine derivatives 14 in good yields. Cyclobutanespiro-3-pyridosultam 12b, after thermal extrusion of SO2, formed cyclobutenyl derivative 14b, which underwent a ring-opening reaction to form butadiene derivative 15. The latter can be trapped with dienophiles, for example, N-phenylmaleimide.

Notes: ---2-Alkyl-1-methylquinolinium hexafluorophosphates 1 are deprotonated by sodium or potassium hydride to afford solutions of 2-alkylidenedihydroquinolines 2, which are investigated by NMR spectroscopy. 1,3-Dipolar cycloaddition of phenyl azide to 2 yields the spirocyclic products 10. While, at 80-110 °C, the [3 + 2] cycloaddition that afforded (u)-10f is reversible and accompanied by epimerisation to give (l)-10f, thermolysis of the dimethyl compounds 10b and d affords the ring-expanded products 14b and d, respectively, in good yields along with molecular nitrogen. Irradiation of 10d with light of λ 〉 320 nm results in the formation of similar amounts of 14d and [3 + 2] cycloreversion products, viz. 2-diazopropane (5b) and the N-phenylimine 15d. - Trapping of 2 by methanesulphonyl azide (18a) gives mixtures of the products of ring expansion (21b, d-f, 10-50 %) and [3 + 2] cycloreversion (22a, d, 10-80 %) of the apparently very labile intermediate spirocyclic cycloadducts 19. The ratio of 21 vs. 22 is significantly improved when 18a is replaced by trifluoromethanesulphonyl azide (18b), which affords the iminodihydrobenzazepines 21i-k in 50-75 % yield. The structures of the products are based on NMR evidence and X-ray diffraction analyses performed with 21b, d, and (ax,E)-21e.

Notes: ---Chiral, nonracemic 2-substituted pyrrolidines and piperidines were prepared in high ee and moderate to good chemical yields in three steps from (R)-phenylglycinol and γ- or δ-chloroketones. The key step of the synthesis was the stereoselective reductive ring-opening of chiral bicyclic 1,3-oxazolidines prepared by condensation of (R)-phenylglycinol and the corresponding ketones.

Notes: ---One of the main problems of the Heck reaction using acyclic substrates which lead to Pd intermediates with β- and β′-hydrogens is the lack of selectivity in the formation of the double bond as the last step of the catalytic cycle. The use of allylsilanes as the alkene moiety permits control of the elimination step. Thus, the Pd0-catalysed reaction of 1a-c and 2 leads exclusively to the corresponding bicyclic compounds 11a-c. In contrast, reaction of 7 yields a mixture of 12a, (E)-12b and (Z)-12b.

Notes: ---The D-homosteroid 1 was synthesized by two successive Heck reactions starting from enantiopure 3 and the bromoarene 2 containing a (Z)-bromovinyl group. The first intermolecular Pd-catalyzed reaction leads to 6 in a highly regio- and diastereoselective way which forms 1 with an unusual cis-junction of the rings B and C by a second intramolecular Heck reaction.
