Description: The annual glacier mass balance of Hallstätter Gletscher in Austria is measured since 2006-10-01 with the direct glaciological method in the fixed date system (1st October to 30th September of the following year). The accumulation of snow is measured by determination of the water equivalent in 6 snow pits, the ice ablation is measured with 15 stakes drilled into the ice. Results are the annual net mass balance in kg, the total accumulation and ablation, the glacier area and the portions of the area which are subject to ablation and accumulation, the elevation of the equilibrium line and the specific mass balance in kg/m**2 (= mm w.e.). The accumulation during the winter is determined by the 1st May. The project is funded by the Amt der Oberösterreichischen Landesregierung and the Energie AG. The measurements are carried out by the Institute for Interdisciplinary Mountain Research (http://www.mountainresearch.at/index.php/en/) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the company Blue Sky in Gmunden, Austria. New data will be added every year.

Description: Temperature and salinity reconstructions for two 1000-year high-resolution sedimentary records, located at the boundary between Atlantic and Arctic surface waters on the North Icelandic shelf, are based on transfer functions and oxygen isotopes for planktonic and benthic foraminifera. There is a general increase of Arctic Water indicator species at the transition from the Medieval Warm Period into the Little Ice Age (LIA) and a subsequent return of Atlantic Water indicator species towards the end of the LIA and in the 20th century. The timing of the reconstructed temperature changes, both at the beginning and at the end of the LIA, appears to be slightly different for the different water masses. The earliest temperature change is seen in the bottom and subsurface waters, where a cooling is reconstructed as early as AD 1150-1200 at both locations, whereas previously published diatom-based and alkenone-based sea-surface temperature reconstructions show a change at AD 1300, coinciding with the air temperature shift in the area. Our results show the need of a thorough understanding of the oceanography in the study area, as well as the different living habitat for the biological proxies used for the temperature estimates.

Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology, https://doi.org/10.1002/2017PA003181
    Publication Date: 2024-07-11
Description: The only low latitude pathway of heat and salt from the Pacific Ocean to the Indian Ocean, known as Indonesian Throughflow (ITF), has been suggested to modulate Global Mean Surface Temperature (GMST) warming through redistribution of surface Pacific Ocean heat. ITF observations are only available since ~1990s, and thus, its multidecadal variability on longer time scales has remained elusive. Here we present a 200 year bimonthly record of geochemical parameters (d18O-Sr/Ca) measured on Cocos (Keeling) corals tracking sea surface temperature (SST; Sr/Ca) and sea surface salinity (SSS; seawater-d18O-d18Osw) in the southeastern tropical Indian Ocean (SETIO). Our results show that SETIO SSS and d18Osw were impacted by ITF transport over the past 60 years, and therefore, reconstructions of Cocos d18Osw hold information on past ITF variability on longer time spans. Over the past 200 years ITF leakage into SETIO is dominated by the interannual climate modes of the Pacific Ocean (El Niño-Southern Oscillation) and Indian Ocean (Indian Ocean Dipole). Pacific decadal climate variability (represented by the Pacific Decadal Oscillation) significantly impacted ITF strength over the past 200 years determining the spatiotemporal SST and SSS advection into the Indian Ocean on multidecadal time scales. A comparison of our SETIO d18Osw record to GMST shows that ITF transport varied in synchrony with global warming rate, being predominantly high/low during GMST warming slowdown/acceleration, respectively. This hints toward an important role for the ITF in global warming rate modulation.

Description: To study shifts in phytoplankton proxies linked to terrigenous inputs and teleconnections, we analyze the composite core MV99 GC41/PC14 from Soledad Basin, Gulf of Ulloa, NW Mexico. We used biogenic opal (% opal), organic carbon (% TOC) and inorganic carbon (% CaCO3) as proxies of productivity; and opal/TOC and CaCO3/TOC ratios as proxies of nutrient uptake and C-export by siliceous and carbonate organisms. We reconstructed terrestrial inputs using grain size Weibull analyses. Grain size analyses show significant amounts of fine fraction (between 0.06 - 6.6 µm) present during the early- to mid-Holocene in agreement to extreme weather on land, with episodes of aeolian and fluvial transport to the sea. The found that ENSO-like variations influence biological C-export producers on a scale of 1.1-1.8 ka, although PDO-related variability is uncertain. We suggest that Holocene drivers for phytoplankton successions are changes in insolation, ITCZ migration, California Current upwelling, nutrient inputs by advection and terrestrial sources.

Description: Gravity surveying is challenging in Antarctica because of its hostile environment and inaccessibility. Nevertheless, many ground-based, airborne, and shipborne gravity campaigns have been completed by the geophysical and geodetic communities since the 1980s. We present the first modern Antarctic-wide gravity data compilation derived from 13 million data points covering an area of 10 million km**2, which corresponds to 73% coverage of the continent. The remove-compute-restore technique was applied for gridding, which facilitated leveling of the different gravity data sets with respect to an Earth gravity model derived from satellite data alone. The resulting free-air and Bouguer gravity anomaly grids of 10 km resolution are publicly available. These grids will enable new high-resolution combined Earth gravity models to be derived and represent a major step forward toward solving the geodetic polar data gap problem. They provide a new tool to investigate continental-scale lithospheric structure and geological evolution of Antarctica.

Description: Calcifying marine organisms provide a valuable means to access high-resolution historical records of the marine environment captured within their skeletal geochemistry. These records are essential for comprehending the effects of human-induced climate change and reducing uncertainties in future projections. Integrating investigations across various taxa, depths, and geographic locations can help identify universal environmental proxies and serve as a basis for targeted studies in the future. Here, we provide a comprehensive georeferenced database of measured values of Li/Mg, Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca, Ba/Ca, U/Ca and Sr-U in coral and coralline algae compiled from the scientific literature (1950-2021; http://www.webofknowledge.com, accessed 2022-09-30) for the purpose of interrogating and refining global, mineralogy specific and/or taxon-specific proxies for seawater temperature and barium. We include metadata relating to the source, timing and location of each study, the methodology used, and environmental and experimental information. The dataset presents an opportunity to quantify uncertainty and test the robustness of trace and minor element proxies for past environmental conditions, of which will be of value within the fields of geochemistry, ecology, climate, and palaeobiology. Full methodology and additional information provided in Williams et al. (2024).

Description: A major uncertainty in determining the mass balance of the Antarctic ice sheet from measurements of satellite gravimetry, and to a lesser extent satellite altimetry, is the poorly known correction for the ongoing deformation of the solid Earth caused by glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA). In the past decade, much progress has been made in consistently modelling the ice sheet and solid Earth interactions; however, forward-modelling solutions of GIA in Antarctica remain uncertain due to the sparsity of constraints on the ice sheet evolution, as well as the Earth's rheological properties. An alternative approach towards estimating GIA is the joint inversion of multiple satellite data - namely, satellite gravimetry, satellite altimetry and GPS, which reflect, with different sensitivities, trends of recent glacial changes and GIA. Crucial to the success of this approach is the accuracy of the space-geodetic data sets. Here, we present reprocessed rates of surface-ice elevation change (Envisat/ICESat; 2003-2009), gravity field change (GRACE; 2003-2009) and bedrock uplift (GPS; 1995-2013). The data analysis is complemented by the forward-modelling of viscoelastic response functions to disc load forcing, allowing us to relate GIA-induced surface displacements with gravity changes for different rheological parameters of the solid Earth. The data and modelling results presented here form the basis for the joint inversion estimate of present-day ice-mass change and GIA in Antarctica. This paper presents the first of two contributions summarizing the work carried out within a European Space Agency funded study, REGINA, (http://www.regina-science.eu).

Earth and Planetary Science Letters, 482, 607-620, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.epsl.2017.11.026
    Publication Date: 2024-07-11
Description: The Mg/Ca of planktic foraminifera Globigerinoides ruber (white) is a widely applied proxy for tropical and sub-tropical sea-surface temperature. The accuracy with which temperature can be reconstructed depends on how accurately relationships between Mg/Ca and temperature and the multiple secondary controls on Mg/Ca are known; however, these relationships remain poorly quantified under oceanic conditions. Here, we present new calibrations based on 440 sediment trap/plankton tow samples from the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, including 130 new samples from the Bay of Bengal/Arabian Sea and the tropical Atlantic Ocean. Our results indicate temperature, salinity and the carbonate system all significantly influence Mg/Ca in G. ruber (white). We propose two calibration models: The first model assumes pH is the controlling carbonate system parameter. In this model, Mg/Ca has a temperature sensitivity of 6.0 ± 0.8 %/°C (2 Sigma), a salinity sensitivity of 3.3 ± 2.2%/PSU and a pH sensitivity of -8.3 ± 7.7%/0.1 pH units; The second model assumes carbonate ion concentration ([CO3**2-]) is the controlling carbonate system parameter. In this model, Mg/Ca has a temperature sensitivity of 6.7 ± 0.8%/°C, a salinity sensitivity of 5.0 ± 3.0%/PSU and a [CO3**2-] sensitivity of -0.24 ± 0.11/µmol kg**1. In both models, the temperature sensitivity is significantly lower than the widely-applied sensitivity of 9.0 ± 0.6%/°C. Application of our new calibrations to down-core data from the Last Glacial Maximum, considering whole ocean changes in salinity and carbonate chemistry, indicate a cooling of 2.4 ± 1.6 °C in the tropical oceans if pH is the controlling parameter and 1.5 ± 1.4 °C if [CO3**2-] is the controlling parameter.

Description: This dataset includes a global compilation of new and published 14C measurements of benthic foraminifera and deep-sea corals (from 0-to 49872 years BP). We synthesized this new dataset into basin-average 14C ventilation age values over the 25,000 years, along density surfaces associated with the upper and lower cells of global ocean overturning circulation (27.5 and 28 kg m^-3, respectively). The published datasets are from all ocean basins, even those not utilized in our synthesis. We also provide the basin-average estimates for the Atlantic, Southern, and Pacific Oceans as produced by the Rafter et al. 2022 study.

Description: Compiled marine radiocarbon data from the global ocean, derived from planktonic/benthic foraminifera and corals, spanning the last deglaciation, with associated calendar ages that are independently derived and/or are consistent with the Marine20 radiocarbon calibration curve. The data have been screened and include data flags pertaining to anomalous values (e.g. negative offsets relative to the contemporary atmosphere), low sedimentation rates 〈2 cm/kyr, and/or deviations from dominant regional-temporal trends. Description: The annual glacier mass balance of Hallstätter Gletscher in Austria is measured since 1.10.2006 with the direct glaciological method in the fixed date system (1.10. to 30. 09. of the following year). The accumulation of snow is measured by determination of the water equivalent in 6 snow pits, the ice ablation is measured with 15 stakes drilled into the ice. Results are the annual net mass balance in kg, the total accumulation and ablation, the glacier area and the portions of the area which are subject to ablation and accumulation, the elevation of the equilibrium line and the specific mass balance in kg/m² (= mm w.e.). The accumulation during the winter is determined by the 1 May. The project is funded by the Federal Government of Upper Austria. The measurements are carried out the Institute for Interdisciplinary Mountain Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the company Blue Sky in Gmunden, Austria.

Description: Compiled marine radiocarbon data from the global ocean, derived from planktonic/benthic foraminifera and corals, spanning the last deglaciation, with associated calendar ages that are independently derived and/or are consistent with the Marine20 radiocarbon calibration curve. The data are further grouped by ocean basin, and according to their associated calendar ages as belonging to a succession of time slices across the last deglaciation: the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), Heinrich Stadial 1 (HS1), the Bolling-Allerod (BA), the Younger Dryas, the Early Holocene (7-11ka BP), and the late Holocene (〈6 ka BP).

Description: We deployed a laser dust logger in the EPICA Dome C Ice Core (EDC) borehole in order to obtain a detailed record of dust and ash in order to study the particulate stratigraphy, volcanology, glaciology and climatology at the site. The Dust Logger device is described in detail elsewhere, most recently here: Journal of Glaciology, Volume 59, Issue 218 (2013) pp. 1117 - 1128, DOI: https://doi.org/10.3189/2013JoG13J068. Because the borehole fluid was turbid at the time of the log, the resolution of the instrument was much lower (〉10 cm) than the nominal 2-3 mm thickness of the laser line. The instrument is lowered into the borehole and retrieved using a surface logging winch over the course of several hours. Data are acquired at the surface in real time using telemetry with the logger over the deployment cable. A small correction has been applied to compensate for the temperature dependence of the laser brightness.

The data have been screened and include data flags pertaining to anomalous values (e.g. negative offsets relative to the contemporary atmosphere), low sedimentation rates 〈2 cm/kyr, and/or deviations from dominant regional-temporal trends.

Description: Using a new global compilation of deep-sea 14C/C, we estimated (in Rafter et al. 2022) the average D14C (units of per mil) and 14C ventilation age (units of years) over the last 25,000 years for the deep Pacific, Atlantic, and Southern Oceans. Particularly, we estimated these basin averages for mid-depth waters (between the 27.5 to 28.0 neutral density surfaces) and bottom waters (having a neutral density 〉28.0). These basin averages are calculated using LOESS smoothing, but see the original text for more details. Our reasons for uploading this new data are: (1) An earlier dataset here contained an error for the mid-depth Atlantic; (2) Earlier datasets did not include the trends as D14C values; and (3) Earlier datasets did not include the Raw data (the data before normalization). We have corrected this with the new submission. Please cite the Rafter et al. 2022 when using this dataset.

Description: Glacier surface velocities are measured on four neighbouring glaciers in the Ötztal Alps (Austria). Measurements of the annual horizontal flow velocity (Δs/a [m/a]) on Hintereisferner (HEF) were started in 1885 at stone lines (cross-profiles). Annual values for the stone lines are given as mean values from the stones at the cross-profiles. On Kesselwandferner, the annual horizontal (Δs/a [m/a]) and vertical velocities (Δv/a [m/a], positive upwards and negative downwards) are measured at ablation and accumulation stakes since 1965. On Taschachferner (TSF) and Gepatschferner (GPF), the records of annual and subseasonal horizontal flow velocities at ablation stakes were started in 2009. The data series continues annually, see: doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.928360.

Description: This data set presents the reconstructed vegetation cover for 533 Asian sites based on harmonized pollen data from the data set LegacyPollen 2.0 (https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.929773). Sugita's REVEALS model (2000) was applied to all pollen records using REVEALSinR from the DISQOVER package (Theuerkauf et al. 2016). Pollen counts were translated into vegetation cover by accounting for taxon-specific pollen productivity and fall speed. Additionally, relevant source areas of pollen were calculated using the aforementioned taxon-specific parameters and a gaussian plume model for deposition and dispersal and forest cover was reconstructed. Values for relative pollen productivity and fall speed from the synthesis from Wiezcorek and Herzschuh (2010) were used for the reconstruction of vegetation cover. The average values from all Northern Hemisphere values were used where taxon-specific continental values were not available. We present tables with reconstructed vegetation cover for all continents with original parameters. As further details we list a table with the taxon-specific parameters used and a list of parameters adjusted in the default version of REVEALSinR.

Description: The MOSES campaign ELBE 2023 covered the whole River Elbe from the source in the Czech Republic, the German freshwater part, the tidal Elbe river, towards the German Bight, where we try to follow the river plume with three ships by help of drifters. In the German freshwater Elbe, physico-chemical and biological parameters will be measured along the Elbe using the research vessel ALBIS from Schmilka (km 4, German border) to Geestacht (km 585, close to Hamburg) in a Langrangian approach. The scientific focus in 2023 was on pollutants, particularly pharmaceuticals, herbicides, and microplastics. For that, we sample not only water but also sediments, and use passive samplers. In addition, a land team sampled tributaries and effluents of weaste water treatment plants parallel to the ship.

Description: Current velocities of the upper water column along the cruise track of R/V Maria S. Merian cruise MSM117 were collected by a vessel-mounted 75 kHz RDI Ocean Surveyor ADCP. The ADCP transducer was located at 6.0 m below the water line. The instrument was operated in two different configurations: 1) narrowband mode with 8 m bins and a blanking distance of 8 m, with a total of 100 bins, 2) broadband mode with 5 m bins and a blanking distance of 5 m, with a total of 128 bins. Heading, pitch and roll data from the ship's motion reference unit and the navigation data from the Global Positioning systems were used by the data acquisition software VmDAS internally to convert ADCP velocities into earth coordinates. Single-ping data were screened for bottom signals and, where appropriate, a bottom mask was manually processed. The ship's velocity was calculated from position fixes obtained by the Global Positioning System (GPS). Accuracy of the ADCP velocities mainly depends on the quality of the position fixes and the ship's heading data. Further errors stem from a misalignment of the transducer with the ship's centerline. Data post-processing included water track calibration of the misalignment angle (configuration 1: -47.4696° +/- 0.7022°, configuration 2: -47.4676° +/- 0.9771°) and scale factor (configuration1: 1.0081 +/- 0.0114, configuration 2: 1.0086 +/- 0.0161) of the Ocean Surveyor signal. The velocity data were averaged in time using an average interval of 60 s. Velocity quality flagging is based on following threshold criteria: abs(UC) or abs(VC) 〉 2.0 m/s, rms(UC_z) or rms(VC_z) 〉 0.3.

Description: Current velocities of the upper water column along the cruise track of R/V Maria S. Merian cruise MSM122 were collected by a vessel-mounted 75 kHz RDI Ocean Surveyor ADCP. The ADCP transducer was located at 6.0 m below the water line. The instrument was operated in narrowband mode (WM10) with a bin size of 8.00 m, a blanking distance of 8.00 m, and a total of 100 bins, covering the depth range between 22.0 m and 814.0 m. Heading, pitch and roll data from the ship's motion reference unit and the navigation data from the Global Positioning systems were used by the data acquisition software VmDAS internally to convert ADCP velocities into earth coordinates. The ship's velocity was calculated from position fixes obtained by the Global Positioning System (GPS). Accuracy of the ADCP velocities mainly depends on the quality of the position fixes and the ship's heading data. Further errors stem from a misalignment of the transducer with the ship's centerline. Data post-processing included water track calibration of the misalignment angle (-47.4000° +/- 0.4581°) and scale factor (1.0021 +/- 0.0089) of the Ocean Surveyor signal. The velocity data were averaged in time using an average interval of 60 s. Velocity quality flagging is based on different threshold criteria: Depth cells with ensemble-averaged percent-good values below 25% are marked as 'bad data'. Depth cells with velocities above 2.0 m/s are flagged as 'bad data'. Depth cells with a root-mean-square deviation between the measured ensemble-average velocity and a cell-wise running-mean velocity above 0.3 m/s are flagged as 'probably bad data'.
