Beschreibung: Festivals are experiential products heavily depending on the recommendations of previous visitors. With the power of social media growing, understanding the antecedents of positive electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) intentions of festival attendees is immensely beneficial for festival organizers to better promote their festivals and control negative publicity. However, there is still limited research regarding eWOM intentions in the festival context. Thus, this study aims to fill such a gap by investigating the relationships among festival attendees’ enjoyment seeking motivation, perceived value, visitor satisfaction, and eWOM intention in a local festival setting. Additionally, the moderating role of gender was tested as it is one of the most important demographic variables to show individual differences in behavioral intentions. The results of structural equation modeling showed a positive effect of enjoyment seeking motivation on perceived value, visitor satisfaction, and eWOM intention. Moreover, gender differences in eWOM intention and a full mediating effect of visitor satisfaction between perceived value and eWOM intention for female respondents were revealed. The findings of this study extend the existing festival literature and provide insights for strategically organizing and promoting festivals to generate more positive eWOM which can be utilized as an effective marketing tool and a feedback channel.

Beschreibung: Ice accretion is a phenomenon whereby super-cooled water droplets impinge and accrete on wall surfaces. It is well known that the icing may cause severe accidents via the deformation of airfoil shape and the shedding of the growing adhered ice. To prevent ice accretion, electro-thermal heaters have recently been implemented as a de- and anti-icing device for aircraft wings. In this study, an icing simulation method for a two-dimensional airfoil with a heating surface was developed by modifying the extended Messinger model. The main modification is the computation of heat transfer from the airfoil wall and the run-back water temperature achieved by the heater. A numerical simulation is conducted based on an Euler–Lagrange method: a flow field around the airfoil is computed by an Eulerian method and droplet trajectories are computed by a Lagrangian method. The wall temperature distribution was validated by experiment. The results of the numerical and practical experiments were in reasonable agreement. The ice shape and aerodynamic performance of a NACA 0012 airfoil with a heater on the leading-edge surface were computed. The heating area changed from 1% to 10% of the chord length with a four-degree angle of attack. The simulation results reveal that the lift coefficient varies significantly with the heating area: when the heating area was 1.0% of the chord length, the lift coefficient was improved by up to 15%, owing to the flow separation instigated by the ice edge; increasing the heating area, the lift coefficient deteriorated, because the suction peak on the suction surface was attenuated by the ice formed. When the heating area exceeded 4.0% of the chord length, the lift coefficient recovered by up to 4%, because the large ice near the heater vanished. In contrast, the drag coefficient gradually decreased as the heating area increased. The present simulation method using the modified extended Messinger model is more suitable for de-icing simulations of both rime and glaze ice conditions, because it reproduces the thin ice layer formed behind the heater due to the runback phenomenon.

Beschreibung: Geospatial data is urgently needed in decision-making processes to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at global, national, regional and local scales. While the advancement of geo-technologies to obtain or produce geospatial data has become faster and more affordable, many countries in the global south still experience a geospatial data scarcity at the rural level due to complex geographical terrains, weak coordination among institutions and a lack of knowledge and technologies to produce visualised geospatial data like maps. We proposed a collaborative spatial learning framework that integrates the spatial knowledge of stakeholders to obtain geospatial data. By conducting participatory mapping workshops in three villages in the Deli Serdang district in Indonesia, we tested the framework in terms of facilitating communication and collaboration of the village stakeholders while also supporting knowledge co-production and social learning among them. Satellite images were used in digital and non-digital mapping workshops to support village stakeholders to produce proper village maps while fulfilling the SDGs’ emphasis to make geospatial data available through a participatory approach.

Beschreibung: Failures of marine propulsion components or systems can lead to serious consequences for a vessel, cargo and the people onboard a ship. These consequences can be financial losses, delay in delivery time or a threat to safety of the people onboard. This is why it is necessary to learn about marine propulsion failures in order to prevent worst-case scenarios. This paper aims to provide a review of experimental, analytical and numerical methods used in the failure analysis of ship propulsion systems. In order to achieve that, the main causes and failure mechanisms are described and summarized. Commonly used experimental, numerical and analytical tools for failure analysis are given. Most indicative case studies of ship failures describe where the origin of failure lies in the ship propulsion failures (i.e., shaft lines, crankshaft, bearings, foundations). In order to learn from such failures, a holistic engineering approach is inevitable. This paper tries to give suggestions to improve existing design procedures with a goal of producing more reliable propulsion systems and taking care of operational conditions.

Beschreibung: East Asia is the most complex region in the world for aerosol studies, as it encounters a lot of varieties of aerosols, and aerosol classification can be a challenge in this region. In the present study, we focused on the relationship between aerosol types and aerosol optical properties. We analyzed the long-term (2005–2012) data of vertical profiles of aerosol extinction coefficients, lidar ratio (Sp), and other aerosol optical properties obtained from a NASA Micro-Pulse Lidar Network and Aerosol Robotic Network site in northern Taiwan, which frequently receives Asian continental outflows. Based on aerosol extinction vertical profiles, the profiles were classified into two types: type 1 (single-layer structure) and type 2 (two-layer structure). Fall season (October–November) was the prevailing season for the Type 1, whereas type 2 mainly happened in spring (March–April). In type 1, air masses normally originated from three regional sectors, i.e., Asia continental (AC), Pacific Ocean (PO), and Southeast Asia (SA). The mean Sp values were 39 ± 17 sr, 30 ± 12 sr, and 38 ± 18 sr for the AC, PO, and SA sectors, respectively. The Sp results suggested that aerosols from the AC sector contained dust and anthropogenic particles, and aerosols from the PO sector were most likely sea salts. We further combined the EPA dust event database and backward trajectory analysis for type 2. Results showed that Sp was 41 ± 14 sr and 53 ± 21 sr for dust storm and biomass-burning events, respectively. The Sp for biomass-burning events in type 2 showed two peaks patterns. The first peak occurred within range of 30–50 sr corresponding to urban pollutant, and the second peak occurred within range of 60–80 sr in relation to biomass burning. Finally, our study summarized the Sp values for four major aerosol types over northern Taiwan, viz., urban (42 ± 18 sr), dust (34 ± 6 sr), biomass-burning (69 ± 12 sr), and oceanic (30 ± 12 sr). Our findings provide useful references for aerosol classification and air pollution identification over the western North Pacific.

Beschreibung: Urbanization is a complex process closely involving the economy, society, and population. While monitoring urban development and exploring the industry-driving force in a real-time and effective way are the prerequisites for optimizing industry structure, narrowing the urban development gap, and achieving sustainable development. Nighttime light is an effective tool to monitor urban development from a macro perspective. However, the systematic research of nighttime light spatiotemporal variation modes and the industry-driving force of urban nighttime light are still unknown. Considering these issues, this paper analyzes the spatiotemporal variation modes of the average light index (ALI) and investigates the industry-driving force of ALI in 100 major prefecture-level cities across China mainland based on National Polar-Orbiting Partnership Satellite Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (NPP VIIRS). The conclusions are as following three aspects. First, ALI is observed a funnel pattern among four regions in spatial dimension, with low in center and high in the surrounding, and it shows 5 variation modes (“W,” “√,” “Exponent,” “Logarithm,” and “N”) in temporal dimension, of which the “√” mode accounts for the highest proportion (60%). Second, the industry structure is closely related to ALI. Besides, the factor analysis result illustrates that the secondary and tertiary industry are the driving industries of ALI. Third, the classification result based on the industry contribution rate indicates that cities driven by different industries show significant spatial distribution differences. The three major industry-driving cities are mainly distributed in central and western regions, the secondary and tertiary industry-driving cities are evenly distributed, and the tertiary industry-driving cities are mainly distributed in provincial capitals. From 2013 to 2018, the fluctuation of city distribution driven by different industries changes obviously. The number of tertiary industry-driving cities increases steadily and the three major industry-driving cities are distributed wider spatially. Additionally, the impacts of location and raw coal on ALI are discussed. In general, these findings are essential to further research urban development mode and can be considered as the reference to narrow urban development gap.

Beschreibung: A low-mass and low-volume dual-polarization L-band radiometer is introduced that has applications for ground-based remote sensing or unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based mapping. With prominent use aboard the ESA Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) and NASA Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellites, L-band radiometry can be used to retrieve environmental parameters, including soil moisture, sea surface salinity, snow liquid water content, snow density, vegetation optical depth, etc. The design and testing of the air-gapped patch array antenna is introduced and is shown to provide a 3-dB full power beamwidth of 37°. We present the radio-frequency (RF) front end design, which uses direct detection architecture and a square-law power detector. Calibration is performed using two internal references, including a matched resistive source (RS) at ambient temperature and an active cold source (ACS). The radio-frequency (RF) front end does not require temperature stabilization, due to characterization of the ACS noise temperature by sky measurements. The ACS characterization procedure is presented. The noise equivalent delta (Δ) temperature (NEΔT) of the radiometer is ~0.14 K at 1 s integration time. The total antenna temperature uncertainty ranges from 0.6 to 1.5 K.

Beschreibung: In this study, the environmental impacts of various alternative ship fuels for a coastal ferry were assessed by the life cycle assessment (LCA) analysis. The comparative study was performed with marine gas oil (MGO), natural gas, and hydrogen with various energy sources for a 12,000 gross tonne (GT) coastal ferry operating in the Republic of Korea (ROK). Considering the energy imports of ROK, i.e., MGO from Saudi Arabia and natural gas from Qatar, these countries were chosen to provide the MGO and the natural gas for the LCA. The hydrogen is considered to be produced by steam methane reforming (SMR) from natural gas with hard coal, nuclear energy, renewable energy, and electricity in the ROK model. The lifecycles of the fuels were analyzed in classifications of Well-to- Tank, Tank-to-Wake, and Well-to-Wake phases. The environmental impacts were provided in terms of global warming potential (GWP), acidification potential (AP), photochemical potential (POCP), eutrophication potential (EP), and particulate matter (PM). The results showed that MGO and natural gas cannot be used for ships to meet the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2050 GHG regulation. Moreover, it was pointed out that the energy sources in SMR are important contributing factors to emission levels. The paper concludes with suggestions for a hydrogen application plan for ships from small, nearshore ships in order to truly achieve a ship with zero emissions based on the results of this study.

Beschreibung: We compared the catalytic effects of two polymers (soluble starch and apple pectin) on the flocculation of kaolinite suspension. Moreover, the relationship between the zeta potential value and the time when kaolin particle sedimentation occurred was verified, and the mechanism of flocculation was analyzed. Additionally, a constitutive model was proposed to simulate the non-ideal sedimentation of clay particles in an aqueous system under constant gravity. This model not only considers the inhomogeneity of the solute but also simulates the change in clay concentration with time during the deposition process. This model proposes a decay constant (α) and sedimentation coefficient (s). The model can also be used to calculate the instantaneous sedimentation rate of the clay suspensions at any time and any depth for the settling cylinder. These sedimentary characteristics were simulated by adopting the established deposition model. The results show that the model is capable of predicting the time required for the complete sedimentation of particles in the aqueous system, suggesting the feasibility of engineering wastewater treatment, site dredging, etc.

Beschreibung: Avalanche disasters are extremely destructive and catastrophic, often causing serious casualties, economic losses and surface erosion. However, far too little attention has been paid to utilizing remote sensing mapping avalanches quickly and automatically to mitigate calamity. Such endeavors are limited by formidable natural conditions, human subjective judgement and insufficient understanding of avalanches, so they have been incomplete and inaccurate. This paper presents an objective and widely serviceable method for regional auto-detection using the scattering and interference characteristics of avalanches extracted from Sentinel-1 SLC images. Six indices are established to distinguish avalanches from surrounding undisturbed snow. The active avalanche belts in Kizilkeya and Aktep of the Western TianShan Mountains in China lend urgency to this research. Implementation found that smaller avalanches can be consistently identified more accurately in descending images. Specifically, 281 and 311 avalanches were detected in the ascending and descending of Kizilkeya, respectively. The corresponding numbers on Aktep are 104 and 114, respectively. The resolution area of single avalanche detection can reach 0.09 km2. The performance of the model was excellent in all cases (areas under the curve are 0.831 and 0.940 in descending and ascending of Kizilkeya, respectively; and 0.807 and 0.938 of Aktep, respectively). Overall, the evaluation of statistical indices are POD 〉 0.75, FAR 〈 0.34, FOM 〈 0.13 and TSS 〉 0.75. The results indicate that the performance of the innovation proposed in this paper, which employs multivariate comprehensive descriptions of avalanche characteristics to actualize regional automatic detection, can be more objective, accurate, applicable and robust to a certain extent. The latest and more complete avalanche inventory generated by this design can effectively assist in addressing the increasingly severe avalanche disasters and improving public awareness of avalanches in alpine areas.

Beschreibung: An extremely heavy rainfall event hit Guangdong province, China, from 27 August to 1 September 2018. There were two different extreme rain regions, respectively, at the Pearl River estuary and eastern Guangdong, and a record-breaking daily precipitation of 1056.7 mm was observed at Gaotan station on 30 August. This paper utilizes a suite of observations from soundings, a gauge network, disdrometers, and polarimetric radars to gain insights to the two rainfall centers. The large-scale meteorological forcing, rainfall patterns, and microphysical processes, as well as radar-based precipitation signatures are investigated. It is concluded that a west-moving monsoon depression played a critical role in sustaining the moisture supply to the two extreme rain regions, and the combined orographic enhancement further contributed to the torrential rainfall over Gaotan station. The raindrop size distributions (DSD) observed at Zhuhai and Huidong stations, as well as the observed polarimetric radar signatures indicate that the rainfall at Doumen region was characterized by larger raindrops but a lower number concentration compared with that at Gaotan region. In addition, the dual-polarization radars are used to quantify precipitation intensity during this extreme event, providing timely information for flood warning and emergency management decision-making.

Beschreibung: Dense β-SiC coating with 3C-structure was utilized as a dry cold forging punch and core-die. Pure titanium T328H wires of industrial grade II were employed as a work material. No adhesion or galling of metallic titanium was detected on the contact interface between this β-SiC die and titanium work, even after this continuous forging process, up to a reduction in thickness by 70%. SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and EDX (Electron Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) were utilized to analyze this contact interface. A very thin titanium oxide layer was in situ formed in the radial direction from the center of the contact interface. Isolated carbon from β-SiC agglomerated and distributed in dots at the center of the initial contact interface. Raman spectroscopy was utilized, yielding the discovery that this carbon is unbound as a free carbon or not bound in SiC or TiC and that intermediate titanium oxides are formed with TiO2 as a tribofilm.

Beschreibung: Earth remote sensing optical satellite systems are often divided into two categories—geosynchronous and sun-synchronous. Geosynchronous systems essentially rotate with the Earth and continuously observe the same region of the Earth. Sun-synchronous systems are generally in a polar orbit and view differing regions of the Earth at the same local time. Although similar in instrument design, there are enough differences in these two types of missions that often the calibration of the instruments can be substantially different. Thus, respective calibration teams develop independent methods and do not interact regularly or often. Yet, there are numerous areas of overlap and much to learn from one another. To address this issue, a panel of experts from both types of systems was convened to discover common areas of concern, areas where improvements can be made, and recommendations for the future. As a result of the panelist’s efforts, a set of eight recommendations were developed. Those that are related to improvements of current technologies include maintaining sun-synchronous orbits (not allowing orbital decay), standardization of spectral bandpasses, and expanded use of well-developed calibration techniques such as deep convective clouds, pseudo invariant calibration sites, and lunar methodologies. New techniques for expanded calibration capability include using geosynchronous instruments as transfer radiometers, continued development of ground-based prelaunch calibration technologies, expansion of RadCalNet, and development of space-based calibration radiometer systems.

Beschreibung: The manufacturing of parts from nickel-based superalloy Alloy 247LC by laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) is challenging, primarily owing to the alloy’s susceptibility to cracks. Apart from the cracks, voids created during the L-PBF process should also be minimized to produce dense parts. In this study, samples of Alloy 247LC were manufactured by L-PBF, several of which could be produced with voids and crack density close to zero. A statistical design of experiments was used to evaluate the influence of the process parameters, namely laser power, scanning speed, and hatch distance (inherent to the volumetric energy density) on void formation, crack density, and microhardness of the samples. The window of process parameters, in which minimum voids and/or cracks were present, was predicted. It was shown that the void content increased steeply at a volumetric energy density threshold below 81 J/mm3. The crack density, on the other hand, increased steeply at a volumetric energy density threshold above 163 J/mm3. The microhardness displayed a relatively low value in three samples which displayed the lowest volumetric energy density and highest void content. It was also observed that two samples, which displayed the highest volumetric energy density and crack density, demonstrated a relatively high microhardness; which could be a vital evidence in future investigations to determine the fundamental mechanism of cracking. The laser power was concluded to be the strongest and statistically most significant process parameter that influenced void formation and microhardness. The interaction of laser power and hatch distance was the strongest and most significant factor that influenced the crack density.

Beschreibung: As satellite observation technology improves, the number of remote sensing images significantly and rapidly increases. Therefore, a growing number of studies are focusing on remote sensing image retrieval. However, having a large number of remote sensing images considerably slows the retrieval time and takes up a great deal of memory space. The hash method is being increasingly used for rapid image retrieval because of its remarkably fast performance. At the same time, selecting samples that contain more information and greater stability to train the network has gradually become the key to improving retrieval performance. Given the above considerations, we propose a deep hash remote sensing image retrieval method, called the hard probability sampling hash retrieval method (HPSH), which combines hash code learning with hard probability sampling in a deep network. Specifically, we used a probability sampling method to select training samples, and we designed one novel hash loss function to better train the network parameters and reduce the hashing accuracy loss due to quantization. Our experimental results demonstrate that HPSH could yield an excellent representation compared with other state-of-the-art hash approaches. For the university of California, merced (UCMD) dataset, HPSH+S resulted in a mean average precision (mAP) of up to 90.9% on 16 hash bits, 92.2% on 24 hash bits, and 92.8% on 32 hash bits. For the aerial image dataset (AID), HPSH+S achieved a mAP of up to 89.8% on 16 hash bits, 93.6% on 24 hash bits, and 95.5% on 32 hash bits. For the UCMD dataset, with the use of data augmentation, our proposed approach achieved a mAP of up to 99.6% on 32 hash bits and 99.7% on 64 hash bits.

Beschreibung: Laser-based technologies are extensively used for polymer surface patterning and/or texturing. Different micro- and nanostructures can be obtained thanks to a wide range of laser types and beam parameters. Cell behavior on various types of materials is an extensively investigated phenomenon in biomedical applications. Polymer topography such as height, diameter, and spacing of the patterning will cause different cell responses, which can also vary depending on the utilized cell types. Structurization can highly improve the biological performance of the material without any need for chemical modification. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of CO2 laser irradiation of poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) thin films on the surface microhardness, roughness, wettability, and cytocompatibility. The conducted testing showed that CO2 laser texturing of PLLA provides the ability to adjust the structural and physical properties of the PLLA surface to the requirements of the cells despite significant changes in the mechanical properties of the laser-treated surface polymer.

Beschreibung: Information and communication technologies transform modern education into a more available learning matrix. One of the unexplored aspects of open education is the constant communicative interaction within the student group by using social media. The aim of the study was to determine principal functions of student-led communication in the educational process, the method for assessing its strong points and the disadvantages disrupting traditional learning. For the primary study of the phenomenon, we used methods that made it possible to propose approaches to further analysis. Netnography is the main research method defining the essence and characteristics of the student-led peer-communication. In our research, we applied data visualization, analytical and quantitative methods and developed a set of quantitative indicators that can be used to assess various aspects of student communication in chats. The elaborated visual model can serve as a simple tool for diagnosing group communication processes. We revealed that online group chats perform a support function in learning. They provide constant informational resource on educational and organizational issues and create emotional comfort. Identified features serve to define shortcomings (e.g., lack of students’ readiness to freely exchange answers to assignments) and significant factors (e.g., underutilized opportunities for self-organization) that exist in the modern system of higher education.

Beschreibung: Upwelling and downwelling processes play a critical role in the connectivity between offshore waters and coastal ecosystems, having relevant implications in terms of intense biogeochemical activity and global fisheries production. A variety of in situ and remote-sensing networks were used in concert with the Iberia–Biscay–Ireland (IBI) circulation forecast system, in order to investigate two persistent upwelling and downwelling events that occurred in the Northwestern (NW) Iberian coastal system during summer 2014. Special emphasis was placed on quality-controlled surface currents provided by a high-frequency radar (HFR), since this land-based technology can effectively monitor the upper layer flow over broad coastal areas in near-real time. The low-frequency spatiotemporal response of the ocean was explored in terms of wind-induced currents’ structures and immediacy of reaction. Mean kinetic energy, divergence and vorticity maps were also calculated for upwelling and downwelling favorable events, in order to verify HFR and IBI capabilities, to accurately resolve the prevailing surface circulation features, such as the locus of a persistent upwelling maximum in the vicinity of Cape Finisterre. This integrated approach proved to be well-founded to efficiently portray the three-dimensional characteristics of the NW Iberian coastal upwelling system regardless of few shortcomings detected in IBI performance, such as the misrepresentation of the most energetic surface dynamics or the overestimation of the cooling and warming associated with upwelling and downwelling conditions, respectively. Finally, the variability of the NW Iberian upwelling system was characterized by means of the development of a novel ocean-based coastal upwelling index (UI), constructed from HFR-derived hourly surface current observations (UIHFR). The proposed UIHFR was validated against two traditional UIs for 2014, to assess its credibility. Results suggest that UIHFR was able to adequately categorize and characterize a wealth of summer upwelling and downwelling events of diverse length and strength, paving the way for future investigations of the subsequent biophysical implications.

Beschreibung: Shore-based phased-array HF radars have been widely used for remotely sensing ocean surface current, wave, and wind around the world. However, phase uncertainties, especially phase distortions, in receiving elements significantly degrade the performance of beam forming and direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation for phased-array HF radar. To address this problem, the conventional array signal model is modified by adding a direction-based phase error matrix. Subsequently, an array phase manifold calibration method using antenna responses of incoming ship echoes is proposed. Later, an assessment on the proposed array calibration method is made based on the DOA estimations and current measurements that are obtained from the datasets that were collected with a multi-frequency HF (MHF) radar. MHF radar-estimated DOAs using three calibration strategies are compared with the ship directions that are provided by an Automatic Identification System (AIS). Additionally, comparisons between the MHF radar-derived currents while using three calibration strategies and Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP)-measured currents are made. The results indicate that the proposed array calibration method is effective in DOA estimation and current measurement for phased-array HF radars, especially in the phase distortion situation.

Beschreibung: In this study we (1) mapped the areal extent of current dust sources over Northern Africa between 8°W–31°E and 22°N - Mediterranean coast; and (2) identified and characterized the geomorphic units and soil types that emit dust from these areas. We used the full resolution (3 km) data from the MSG-SEVIRI to map dust sources over a 2-year period between 2005–2006, and examined these regions with remotely sensed images and geomorphic and soil maps. A total of 〉2600 individual dust emission events were mapped; with frequency up to 34 events in the 2-year study period. The areal extent of dust emission sources exhibited a lognormal distribution with most sources ranging from 20 to 130 km2. Most dust events were singular and related to a variety of specific geomorphic units. Dust events that created hotspots were mostly located over playas and fluvial landforms, and to a lesser extent over sand dunes and anthropogenic affected regions. About 20% of dust hotspots were offset a few kilometers from clear geomorphic units. Quantitative analysis of emissions revealed that dust sourced from various geomorphic units, among them playas (12%) and fluvial systems (10%). The importance of sand dunes as dust-emission sources greatly differs between examined datasets (7% vs. 30%). Our study emphasizes the importance of scattered dust emission events that are not considered as hotspots, as these sources are usually neglected in dust emission modeling.

Beschreibung: Highly controlled biomineralization of calcium carbonate is via non-classical mesocrystallization of amorphous precursors. In the present study, a simple in vitro assay was developed to mimic the biological process, which involved stabilized amorphous calcium carbonate and a single crystal substrate of calcite. The microcoating layer formed on the calcite substrate displayed mesocrystalline characteristics, and the layers near the substrate were strongly influenced by the epitaxy to the substrate. This behavior was preserved even when the morphology of the coating layer was modified with poly(acrylic acid), a model anionic macromolecule. Interestingly, the extent of the epitaxy increased substantially with poly(ethylene imine), which barely affected the crystal morphology. The in vitro assay in the present study will be useful in the investigations of the biomineralization and bioinspired crystallization of calcium carbonate in general.

Beschreibung: Ti6Al4V alloy is still attracting great interest because of its application as an implant material for hard tissue repair. This research aims to produce and investigate in-situ chitosan/hydroxyapatite (CS/HA) nanocomposite coatings based on different amounts of HA (10, 50 and 60 wt.%) on alkali-treated Ti6Al4V substrate through the sol-gel process to enhance in vitro bioactivity. The influence of different contents of HA on the morphology, contact angle, roughness, adhesion strength, and in vitro bioactivity of the CS/HA coatings was studied. Results confirmed that, with increasing the HA content, the surface morphology of crack-free CS/HA coatings changed for nucleation modification and HA nanocrystals growth, and consequently, the surface roughness of the coatings increased. Furthermore, the bioactivity of the CS/HA nanocomposite coatings enhanced bone-like apatite layer formation on the material surface with increasing HA content. Moreover, CS/HA nanocomposite coatings were biocompatible and, in particular, CS/10 wt.% HA composition significantly promoted human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) proliferation. In particular, these results demonstrate that the treatment strategy used during the bioprocess was able to improve in vitro properties enough to meet the clinical performance. Indeed, it is predicted that the dense and crack-free CS/HA nanocomposite coatings suggest good potential application as dental implants.

Beschreibung: Surface all-wave net radiation (Rn) is a crucial variable driving many terrestrial latent heat (LE) models that estimate global LE. However, the differences between different Rn products and their impact on global LE estimates still remain unclear. In this study, we evaluated two Rn products, Global LAnd Surface Satellite (GLASS) beta version Rn and Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications-version 2 (MERRA-2) Rn, from 2007–2017 using ground-measured data from 240 globally distributed in-situ radiation measurements provided by FLUXNET projects. The GLASS Rn product had higher accuracy (R2 increased by 0.04–0.26, and RMSE decreased by 2–13.3 W/m2) than the MERRA-2 Rn product for all land cover types on a daily scale, and the two Rn products differed greatly in spatial distribution and variations. We then determined the resulting discrepancies in simulated annual global LE using a simple averaging model by merging five diagnostic LE models: RS-PM model, SW model, PT-JPL model, MS-PT model, and SIM model. The validation results showed that the estimated LE from the GLASS Rn had higher accuracy (R2 increased by 0.04–0.14, and RMSE decreased by 3–8.4 W/m2) than that from the MERRA-2 Rn for different land cover types at daily scale. Importantly, the mean annual global terrestrial LE from GLASS Rn was 2.1% lower than that from the MERRA-2 Rn. Our study showed that large differences in satellite and reanalysis Rn products could lead to substantial uncertainties in estimating global terrestrial LE.

Beschreibung: This paper presents the studies of the development of a high-performance epoxy coating for steel substrates. To this end, it investigated the synergistic effect of incorporating zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles into nanosilica containing epoxy formulations. The mechanical properties of the epoxy coating formulations were improved by modifying the surfaces of the silica nanoparticles (5 wt.%) with 3-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane, which ensured their dispersal through the material. Next, the ZnO nanoparticles (1, 2, or 3 wt.%) were incorporated to improve the corrosion performance of the formulations. The anticorrosive properties of the coatings were examined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) of coated mild steel specimens immersed in 3.5% NaCl solution over different time intervals (1 h to 30 days). Incorporation of the ZnO nanoparticles and the nanosilica into the coating formulation improved the corrosion resistance of the epoxy coating even after long-term exposure to saline test solutions. Finally, to evaluate how the nanoparticles affected the chemical and morphological properties of the prepared coatings, the coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD).

Beschreibung: In the present paper, the identification of the material parameters of a masonry lighthouse is discussed. A fully non-invasive method was selected, in which the material properties were determined via numerical model validation applied to the first pair of natural frequencies and their related mode shapes, determined experimentally. The exact structural model was built by means of the finite element method. To obtain experimental data for the inverse analysis, operational modal analysis was applied to the structure. Three methods were considered: peak picking (PP), eigensystem realization algorithm (ERA) and natural excitation technique with ERA (NExT-ERA). The acceleration’s responses to environmental excitations, enhanced in some periods of time by sheet piling hammering or by sudden interruptions like wind stroke, were assumed within the analysis input. Different combinations of the input were considered in the PP and NExT-ERA analysis to find the most reasonable modal forms. A number of time periods of a free-decay character were considered in the ERA technique to finally calculate the averaged modal forms. Finally, the elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio and material density of brick, sandstone and granite masonry were determined. The obtained values supplement the state of the art database concerning historic building materials. In addition, the numerical model obtained in the analysis may be used in further cases of structural analysis.

Beschreibung: Land-based sources are the key sources of plastic debris, and mismanaged plastic debris can eventually enter the ocean via marine beaches. In this study, the spatial distribution and amount of plastic debris in the land-based source input zone of First Long Beach (FLB), China, which is a major tourist attraction, were first investigated. By using field investigation, sand samples were collected from two sections on FLB adjacent to land-based sources in December 2019, and the plastic debris in the sand samples was quantified and characterized in the laboratory. The amount of plastic debris ranged from 2 to 82 particles/m2 on this marine sand beach. There was a significant difference in plastic debris amount between the transects along the land-based source input zone (p 〈 0.05) due to the impacts of wind, ocean currents, and waves. The most abundant size of plastics was 0.5–2.5 cm (44.4%). Moreover, the most common color was white (60.9%). The most abundant shape of plastic debris fell into the fragment category (76.2%). The plastic debris amounts were significantly correlated with multiple sizes. Our results show that land-based wastewater discharge is a large plastic debris source on FLB under coastal water tide variation. Reduction strategies should be carried out by tracing the various land-based sources of plastic debris.

Beschreibung: Detection of terrain features (ridges, spurs, cliffs, and peaks) is a basic research topic in digital elevation model (DEM) analysis and is essential for learning about factors that influence terrain surfaces, such as geologic structures and geomorphologic processes. Detection of terrain features based on general geomorphometry is challenging and has a high degree of uncertainty, mostly due to a variety of controlling factors on surface evolution in different regions. Currently, there are different computational techniques for obtaining detailed information about terrain features using DEM analysis. One of the most common techniques is numerically identifying or classifying terrain elements where regional topologies of the land surface are constructed by using DEMs or by combining derivatives of DEM. The main drawbacks of these techniques are that they cannot differentiate between ridges, spurs, and cliffs, or result in a high degree of false positives when detecting spur lines. In this paper, we propose a new method for automatically detecting terrain features such as ridges, spurs, cliffs, and peaks, using shaded relief by controlling altitude and azimuth of illumination sources on both smooth and rough surfaces. In our proposed method, we use edge detection filters based on azimuth angle on shaded relief to identify specific terrain features. Results show that the proposed method performs similar to or in some cases better (when detecting spurs than current terrain features detection methods, such as geomorphon, curvature, and probabilistic methods.

Beschreibung: The shipborne high-frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR) platform produces six degrees of freedom (DOF) motion at sea, which affects the performance of radar target detection and remote sensing of ocean surface dynamics parameters. Motion compensation can mitigate the effect of six-DOF motion, but motion parameters (including amplitude and angular frequency) need to be known. Motion parameters obtained by using high precision sensors are affected by the precision error and time delay, thus affecting the effect of motion compensation. To obtain the motion parameters accurately and in real time, a method of identifying the motion parameters by using an artificially transmitted reference radio frequency (RF) signal generated at the shore is proposed. Based on the results of the parameter identification, the reference RF signal and the first-order radar cross-sections (RCSs) modulated by six-DOF motion of the shipborne HFSWR platform can be compensated. The identification of angular frequency is divided into two steps: (1) Preliminary identification results are obtained by using the reference RF signal; (2) the pattern search method is used to further improve the identification accuracy of angular frequency. The amplitude of translation (including surge and sway) can be identified accurately through the reference RF signal. Due to the small amplitude of rotation (including roll, pitch, and yaw), it needs to be identified by the reference RF signal and pattern search method. After identifying the motion parameters, division in the time domain is used for motion compensation. Through the simulation results, both translation and rotation have good motion compensation effects. In addition, the method of using high precision sensors to obtain motion parameters and compensation is compared with the method in this paper, the simulation results of motion compensation show that the latter is better.

Beschreibung: Some special conditions are important for chemical syntheses, such as high temperature and the medium used; unfortunately, uncontrollable influences are introduced during the process, resulting in unexpectedly low repeatability. Herein, we report a facile, environmentally friendly, stable, and repeatable methodology for synthesizing silver nanoplates (SNPs) at 0 °C that overcomes these issues and dramatically increases the yield. This method mainly employs sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium alginate (SA) as the surface stabilizer and assistant, respectively. Consequently, we produced hexagonal nanoplates and tailed nanoplates, and the characterization showed that SA dominates the clear and regular profiles of nanoplates at 0 °C. The tailed nanoplates, over time, showed the growth of heads and the dissolving of tails, and inclined to the nanoplates without tails. The synthesis method for SNPs used in this study—0 °C without media—showed high repeatability. We confirmed that these special conditions are not required for the synthesis of silver nanostructures (SNSs). Furthermore, we constructed a new method for preparing noble metal nanostructures and proved the possibility of preparing metal nanostructures at 0 °C.

Beschreibung: The information of building types is highly needed for urban planning and management, especially in high resolution building modeling in which buildings are the basic spatial unit. However, in many parts of the world, this information is still missing. In this paper, we proposed a framework to derive the information of building type using geospatial data, including point-of-interest (POI) data, building footprints, land use polygons, and roads, from Gaode and Baidu Maps. First, we used natural language processing (NLP)-based approaches (i.e., text similarity measurement and topic modeling) to automatically reclassify POI categories into which can be used to directly infer building types. Second, based on the relationship between building footprints and POIs, we identified building types using two indicators of type ratio and area ratio. The proposed framework was tested using over 440,000 building footprints in Beijing, China. Our NLP-based approaches and building type identification methods show overall accuracies of 89.0% and 78.2%, and kappa coefficient of 0.83 and 0.71, respectively. The proposed framework is transferrable to other China cities for deriving the information of building types from web mapping platforms. The data products generated from this study are of great use for quantitative urban studies at the building level.

Beschreibung: This research group has recently used the new technology Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) for the monitoring and the measurement of airplane flutter. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first such use for this new technology. Traditionally, the measurement of airplane flutter requires the mounting of a very large number of sensors on the wing being monitored, and extensive wiring must be connected to all these sensors. The new system and technology introduced in this paper dramatically reduces the hardware requirements in such an application: all the traditional sensors and wiring are replaced with one fiber optic cable with a diameter of 2 mm. An electro-optical system with the size of a desktop PC monitors simultaneously one or more of such fiber optic cables and detects/characterizes any mechanical disturbances on the cables. Theoretical and experimental results are given.

Beschreibung: Despite the potential implications of a cropland canopy water content (CCWC) thematic product, no global remotely sensed CCWC product is currently generated. The successful launch of the Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) in 2012, Sentinel-2A Multispectral Instrument (MSI) in 2015, followed by Sentinel-2B in 2017, make possible the opportunity for CCWC estimation at a spatial and temporal scale that can meet the demands of potential operational users. In this study, we designed and tested a novel radiative transfer model (RTM) inversion technique to combine multiple sources of a priori data in a look-up table (LUT) for inverting the NASA Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 (HLS) product for CCWC estimation. This study directly builds on previous research for testing the constraint of the leaf parameter (Ns) in PROSPECT, by applying those constraints in PRO4SAIL in an agricultural setting where the variability of canopy parameters are relatively minimal. In total, 225 independent leaf measurements were used to train the LUTs, and 102 field data points were collected over the 2015–2017 growing seasons for validating the inversions. The results confirm increasing a priori information and regularization yielded the best performance for CCWC estimation. Despite the relatively low variable canopy conditions, the inclusion of Ns constraints did not improve the LUT inversion. Finally, the inversion of Sentinel-2 data outperformed the inversion of Landsat-8 in the HLS product. The method demonstrated ability for HLS inversion for CCWC estimation, resulting in the first HLS-based CCWC product generated through RTM inversion.

Beschreibung: The technological growth and accessibility of Unoccupied Aerial Systems (UAS) have revolutionized the way geographic data are collected. Digital Surface Models (DSMs) are an integral component of geospatial analyses and are now easily produced at a high resolution from UAS images and photogrammetric software. Systematic testing is required to understand the strengths and weaknesses of DSMs produced from various UAS. Thus, in this study, we used photogrammetry to create DSMs using four UAS (DJI Inspire 1, DJI Phantom 4 Pro, DJI Mavic Pro, and DJI Matrice 210) to test the overall accuracy of DSM outputs across a mixed land cover study area. The accuracy and spatial variability of these DSMs were determined by comparing them to (1) 12 high-precision GPS targets (checkpoints) in the field, and (2) a DSM created from Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) (Velodyne VLP-16 Puck Lite) on a fifth UAS, a DJI Matrice 600 Pro. Data were collected on July 20, 2018 over a site with mixed land cover near Middleton, NS, Canada. The study site comprised an area of eight hectares (~20 acres) with land cover types including forest, vines, dirt road, bare soil, long grass, and mowed grass. The LiDAR point cloud was used to create a 0.10 m DSM which had an overall Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) accuracy of ±0.04 m compared to 12 checkpoints spread throughout the study area. UAS were flown three times each and DSMs were created with the use of Ground Control Points (GCPs), also at 0.10 m resolution. The overall RMSE values of UAS DSMs ranged from ±0.03 to ±0.06 m compared to 12 checkpoints. Next, DSMs of Difference (DoDs) compared UAS DSMs to the LiDAR DSM, with results ranging from ±1.97 m to ±2.09 m overall. Upon further investigation over respective land covers, high discrepancies occurred over vegetated terrain and in areas outside the extent of GCPs. This indicated LiDAR’s superiority in mapping complex vegetation surfaces and stressed the importance of a complete GCP network spanning the entirety of the study area. While UAS DSMs and LiDAR DSM were of comparable high quality when evaluated based on checkpoints, further examination of the DoDs exposed critical discrepancies across the study site, namely in vegetated areas. Each of the four test UAS performed consistently well, with P4P as the clear front runner in overall ranking.

Beschreibung: Radar images suffer from the impact of sidelobes. Several sidelobe-suppressing methods including the convolutional neural network (CNN)-based one has been proposed. However, the point spread function (PSF) in the radar images is sometimes spatially variant and affects the performance of the CNN. We propose the spatial-variant convolutional neural network (SV-CNN) aimed at this problem. It will also perform well in other conditions when there are spatially variant features. The convolutional kernels of the CNN can detect motifs with some distinctive features and are invariant to the local position of the motifs. This makes the convolutional neural networks widely used in image processing fields such as image recognition, handwriting recognition, image super-resolution, and semantic segmentation. They also perform well in radar image enhancement. However, the local position invariant character might not be good for radar image enhancement, when features of motifs (also known as the point spread function in the radar imaging field) vary with the positions. In this paper, we proposed an SV-CNN with spatial-variant convolution kernels (SV-CK). Its function is illustrated through a special application of enhancing the radar images. After being trained using radar images with position-codings as the samples, the SV-CNN can enhance the radar images. Because the SV-CNN reads information of the local position contained in the position-coding, it performs better than the conventional CNN. The advance of the proposed SV-CNN is tested using both simulated and real radar images.

Beschreibung: The objective of our research is to improve the properties of calcium-sulphate hemihydrate parts printed by binder jetting. In this paper, we show the thermal treatment results when using temperature time ramps on binder-jetted ceramic parts without infiltrating. The results show that the mechanical properties of printed parts are improved substantially. Two different thermal cycles were investigated for their effect on the dehydration process of CaSO4·½H2O using infrared analysis. The thermal-treated samples were compared with respect to porosity, surface roughness, compression strength and dimensional and weight variation. The proposed thermal treatment significantly improves the compression strength in a short time, guaranteeing dimensional stability while providing a good surface. This improvement in mechanical properties offers a great chance for using binder-jetted parts as functional components, for example, in the casting field or the medical sector (scaffolds).

Beschreibung: In this paper we document the design, development, results, performance and field applications of a compact directive transmit antenna for the long-range High Frequency ocean RADAR (HFR) systems operating in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) designated 4MHz and 5MHz radiodetermination bands. The antenna design is based on the combination of the concepts of an electrically small loop with that of travelling wave antenna. This has the effect of inducing a radiated wave predominantly in a direction opposed to that of energy flow on the antenna structures. We demonstrate here that travelling wave design allows for a more compact antenna than other directive options, it has straightforward feed-point matching arrangements, and a flat frequency and phase response over an entire radiodetermination band. In situ measurements of the antenna radiation pattern, obtained with the aid of a drone, correlate well with those obtained from simulations, and show between 8dB and 30dB front-to-back suppression, with a 3dB beam width in the forward lobe of 100∘ or more. The broad-beam radiation pattern ensures proper illumination over the ocean and the significant front-to-back suppression guarantees reduced interference to terrestrial services. The proposed antenna design is compact and straight forward and can be easily deployed by minimal modifications of an existing transmission antenna. The design may be readily adapted to different environments due to the relative insensitivity of its radiation pattern and frequency response to geometric detail. The only downside to these antennas is their relatively low radiation efficiency which, however, may easily be compensated for by the available power output of a typical HFR transmitter. Antennas based on this design are currently deployed at the SeaSonde HFR sites in New South Wales, Australia, with operational ranges up to 200 km offshore despite their low radiating efficiency and the extremely low output power in use at these installations. Due to their directional pattern, it is also planned to test these antennas in phased-array Wellen RADAR (WERA) systems in both the standard receive arrays: where in-band radio frequency noise of terrestrial origin is impacting on data quality, and in the transmit array: to possibly simplify splitting, phasing and tuning requirements.

Beschreibung: Supraglacial liquid water at the margins of ice sheets has an important impact on the surface energy balance and can also influence the ice flow when supraglacial lakes drain to the bed. Optical imagery is able to monitor supraglacial lakes during the summer season. Here we developed an alternative method using polarimetric SAR from Sentinel-1 during 2017–2020 to distinguish between liquid water and other surface types at the margin of the Northeast Greenland Ice Stream. This allows the supraglacial hydrology to be monitored during the winter months too. We found that the majority of supraglacial lakes persist over winter. When comparing our results to optical data, we found significantly more water. Even during summer, many lakes are partly or fully covered by a lid of ice and snow. We used our classification results to automatically map the outlines of supraglacial lakes, create time series of water area for each lake, and hence detect drainage events. We even found several winter time drainages, which might have an important effect on ice flow. Our method has problems during the peak of the melt season, but for the rest of the year it provides crucial information for better understanding the component of supraglacial hydrology in the glaciological system.

Beschreibung: As the use of continuous fiber polymer matrix composites expands into new fields, there is a growing need for more sustainable manufacturing processes. An integrated computational material design framework has been developed, which enables the design of tailored manufacturing systems for polymer matrix composite materials as a sustainable alternative to achieving high-quality components in high-rate production. Trapped rubber processing achieves high pressures during polymer matrix composite processing, utilizing the thermally induced volume change of a nearly incompressible material inside a closed cavity mold. In this interdisciplinary study, the structural analysis, material science and manufacturing engineering perspectives are all combined to determine the mold mechanics, and the manufacturing process in a cohesive and iterative design loop. This study performs the coupled thermo-mechanical analysis required to simulate the transients involved in composite manufacturing and the results are compared with a previously developed test method. The internal surface pressure and temperatures are computed, compared with the experimental results, and the resulting design process is simulated. Overall, this approach maintains high-quality consolidation during curing while allowing for the possibility for custom distributions of pressures and temperatures. This can lead to more sustainable manufacturing by reducing energy consumption and improving throughput.

Beschreibung: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of distributed propulsion systems used on inland and coastal navigation in shallow water. Five layouts were assessed by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. The hull/propulsion layout cases have been analyzed for discrete flow speed values in the range 0–6 m/s. All cases have been examined under restricted draft conditions in shallow water with a minimum of 0.3 m under keel clearance (UKC) and under unrestricted draft conditions in deep water. The results show that distributed propulsion consisting of 6 or 8 (in some cases, even more) units produces noticeable higher thrust effects in shallow water than the traditional layout. Under restricted conditions, the thrust increase between two distributed layouts with different numbers of propulsors is higher, in contrast to deep water, where differences in performance are not so significant.

Beschreibung: Xenogenic collagen-based matrices represent an alternative to subepithelial palatal connective tissue autografts in periodontal and peri-implant soft tissue reconstructions. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the migratory, adhesive, proliferative, and wound-healing potential of primary human oral fibroblasts (hOF) and periodontal ligament cells (hPDL) in response to four commercially available collagen matrices. Non-crosslinked collagen matrix (NCM), crosslinked collagen matrix (CCM), dried acellular dermal matrix (DADM), and hydrated acellular dermal matrix (HADM) were all able to significantly enhance the ability of hPDL and hOF cells to directionally migrate toward the matrices as well as to efficiently repopulate an artificially generated wound gap covered by the matrices. Compared to NCM and DADM, CCM and HADM triggered stronger migratory response. Cells grown on CCM and HADM demonstrated significantly higher proliferative rates compared to cells grown on cell culture plastic, NCM, or DADM. The pro-proliferative effect of the matrices was supported by expression analysis of proliferative markers regulating cell cycle progression. Upregulated expression of genes encoding the adhesive molecules fibronectin, vinculin, CD44 antigen, and the intracellular adhesive molecule-1 was detected in hPDL and hOF cells cultured on each of the four matrices. This may be considered as a prerequisite for good adhesive properties of the four scaffolds ensuring proper cell–matrix and cell–cell interactions. Upregulated expression of genes encoding TGF-β1 and EGF growth factors as well as MMPs in cells grown on each of the four matrices provided support for their pro-proliferative and pro-migratory abilities. The expression of genes encoding the angiogenic factors FGF-2 and VEGF-A was dramatically increased in cells grown on DADM and HADM only, suggesting a good basis for accelerated vascularization of the latter. Altogether, our results support favorable influence of the investigated collagen matrices on the recruitment, attachment, and growth of cell types implicated in oral soft tissue regeneration. Among the four matrices, HADM has consistently exhibited stronger positive effects on the oral cellular behavior. Our data provide solid basis for future investigations on the clinical application of the collagen-based matrices in surgical periodontal therapy.

Beschreibung: To investigate the effect of wave-induced mixing on the upper ocean structure, especially under typhoon conditions, an ocean-wave coupled model is used in this study. Two physical processes, wave-induced turbulence mixing and wave transport flux residue, are introduced. We select tropical cyclone (TC) Nepartak in the Northwest Pacific ocean as a TC example. The results show that during the TC period, the wave-induced turbulence mixing effectively increases the cooling area and cooling amplitude of the sea surface temperature (SST). The wave transport flux residue plays a positive role in reproducing the distribution of the SST cooling area. From the intercomparisons among experiments, it is also found that the wave-induced turbulence mixing has an important effect on the formation of mixed layer depth (MLD). The simulated maximum MLD is increased to 54 m and is only 1 m less than the observed value. The wave transport flux residue shows a dominant role in the mixed layer temperature (MLT) changing. The mean error of the MLT is reduced by 0.19 °C compared with the control experiment without wave mixing effects. The study shows that the effect of wave mixing should be included in the upper ocean structure modeling.

Beschreibung: Due to the growing success of neural machine translation (NMT), many have started to question its applicability within the field of literary translation. In order to grasp the possibilities of NMT, we studied the output of the neural machine system of Google Translate (GNMT) and DeepL when applied to four classic novels translated from English into Dutch. The quality of the NMT systems is discussed by focusing on manual annotations, and we also employed various metrics in order to get an insight into lexical richness, local cohesion, syntactic, and stylistic difference. Firstly, we discovered that a large proportion of the translated sentences contained errors. We also observed a lower level of lexical richness and local cohesion in the NMTs compared to the human translations. In addition, NMTs are more likely to follow the syntactic structure of a source sentence, whereas human translations can differ. Lastly, the human translations deviate from the machine translations in style.

Beschreibung: The current techniques used for monitoring the blasting process in open pit mines are manual, intermittent and inefficient and can expose technical manpower to hazardous conditions. This study presents the application of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems for monitoring and improving the blasting process in open pit mines. Field experiments were conducted in different open pit mines to assess rock fragmentation, blast-induced damage on final pit walls, blast dynamics and the accuracy of blastholes including production and pre-split holes. The UAV-based monitoring was done in three different stages, including pre-blasting, blasting and post-blasting. In the pre-blasting stage, pit walls were mapped to collect structural data to predict in situ block size distribution and to develop as-built pit wall digital elevation models (DEM) to assess blast-induced damage. This was followed by mapping the production blasthole patterns implemented in the mine to investigate drillhole alignment. To monitor the blasting process, a high-speed camera was mounted on the UAV to investigate blast initiation, sequencing, misfired holes and stemming ejection. In the post-blast stage, the blasted rock pile (muck pile) was monitored to estimate fragmentation and assess muck pile configuration, heave and throw. The collected aerial data provide detailed information and high spatial and temporal resolution on the quality of the blasting process and significant opportunities for process improvement. The current challenges with regards to the application of UAVs for blasting process monitoring are discussed, and recommendations for obtaining the most value out of an UAV application are provided.

Beschreibung: Concrete wastewater infrastructures are important to modern society but are susceptible to sulfuric acid attack when exposed to an aggressive environment. Fibre-reinforced mortar has been adopted as a promising coating and lining material for degraded reinforced concrete structures due to its unique crack control and excellent anti-corrosion ability. This paper aims to evaluate the performance of polyethylene (PE) fibre-reinforced calcium aluminate cement (CAC)–ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) blended strain-hardening mortar after sulfuric acid immersion, which represented the aggressive sewer environment. Specimens were exposed to 3% sulfuric acid solution for up to 112 days. Visual, physical and mechanical performance such as water absorption ability, sorptivity, compressive and direct tensile strength were evaluated before and after sulfuric acid attack. In addition, micro-structure changes to the samples after sulfuric acid attack were also assessed by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to further understand the deterioration mechanism. The results show that overall fibre-reinforced calcium aluminate cement (CAC)-based samples performed significantly better than fibre-reinforced ordinary Portland cement (OPC)-based samples as well as mortar samples in sulfuric acid solution in regard to visual observations, penetration depth, direct tensile strength and compressive reduction. Gypsum generation in the cementitious matrix of both CAC and OPC-based systems was the main reason behind the deterioration mechanism after acid attack exposure. Moreover, laboratory sulfuric acid testing has been proven for successfully screening the cementitious material against an acidic environment. This method can be considered to design the service life of concrete wastewater pipes.

Beschreibung: The emergence and outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) had a devasting effect on global health, the economy, and individuals’ daily lives. Timely diagnosis of COVID-19 is a crucial task, as it reduces the risk of pandemic spread, and early treatment will save patients’ life. Due to the time-consuming, complex nature, and high false-negative rate of the gold-standard RT-PCR test used for the diagnosis of COVID-19, the need for an additional diagnosis method has increased. Studies have proved the significance of X-ray images for the diagnosis of COVID-19. The dissemination of deep-learning techniques on X-ray images can automate the diagnosis process and serve as an assistive tool for radiologists. In this study, we used four deep-learning models—DenseNet121, ResNet50, VGG16, and VGG19—using the transfer-learning concept for the diagnosis of X-ray images as COVID-19 or normal. In the proposed study, VGG16 and VGG19 outperformed the other two deep-learning models. The study achieved an overall classification accuracy of 99.3%.

Beschreibung: Incorporating various industrial waste materials into concrete has recently gained attention for sustainable construction. This paper, for the first time, studies the effects of silica stone waste (SSW) powder on concrete. The cement of concrete was replaced with 5, 10, 15, and 20% of the SSW powder. The mechanical properties of concrete, such as compressive and tensile strength, were studied. Furthermore, the microstructure of concrete was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis (EDX), Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-Ray diffraction (XRD) tests. Compressive and tensile strength of samples with 5% SSW powder was improved up to 18.8% and 10.46%, respectively. As can be observed in the SEM images, a reduced number of pores and higher density in the matrix can explain the better compressive strength of samples with 5% SSW powder.

Beschreibung: A method for estimation of the turbulent energy dissipation rate from measurements by a conically scanning pulsed coherent Doppler lidar (PCDL), with allowance for the wind transport of turbulent velocity fluctuations, has been developed. The method has been tested in comparative atmospheric experiments with a Stream Line PCDL (Halo Photonics, Brockamin, Worcester, United Kingdom) and a sonic anemometer. It has been demonstrated that the method provides unbiased estimates of the dissipation rate at arbitrarily large ratios of the mean wind velocity to the linear scanning speed.

Beschreibung: Pansharpening is a typical image fusion problem, which aims to produce a high resolution multispectral (HRMS) image by integrating a high spatial resolution panchromatic (PAN) image with a low spatial resolution multispectral (MS) image. Prior arts have used either component substitution (CS)-based methods or multiresolution analysis (MRA)-based methods for this propose. Although they are simple and easy to implement, they usually suffer from spatial or spectral distortions and could not fully exploit the spatial and/or spectral information existed in PAN and MS images. By considering their complementary performances and with the goal of combining their advantages, we propose a pansharpening weight network (PWNet) to adaptively average the fusion results obtained by different methods. The proposed PWNet works by learning adaptive weight maps for different CS-based and MRA-based methods through an end-to-end trainable neural network (NN). As a result, the proposed PWN inherits the data adaptability or flexibility of NN, while maintaining the advantages of traditional methods. Extensive experiments on data sets acquired by three different kinds of satellites demonstrate the superiority of the proposed PWNet and its competitiveness with the state-of-the-art methods.

Beschreibung: This paper presents a study of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy milling under different lubrication conditions, using the minimum quantity lubrication approach. The chosen material is widely used in the industry due to its properties, although they present difficulties in terms of their machinability. A minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) prototype valve was built for this purpose, and machining followed a previously defined experimental design with three lubrication strategies. Speed, feed rate, and the depth of cut were considered as independent variables. As design-dependent variables, cutting forces, torque, and roughness were considered. The desirability optimization function was used in order to obtain the best input data indications, in order to minimize cutting and roughness efforts. Supervised artificial neural networks of the multilayer perceptron type were created and tested, and their responses were compared statistically to the results of the factorial design. It was noted that the variables that most influenced the machining-dependent variables were the feed rate and the depth of cut. A lower roughness value was achieved with MQL only with the use of cutting fluid with graphite. Statistical analysis demonstrated that artificial neural network and the experimental design predict similar results.

Beschreibung: In this work, we demonstrate how the blockchain and the off-chain storage interact via Oracle-based mechanisms, which build an effective connection between a distributed database and real assets. For demonstration purposes, smart contracts were drawn up to deal with two different applications. Due to the characteristics of the blockchain, we may still encounter severe privacy issues, since the data stored on the blockchain are exposed to the public. The proposed scheme provides a general solution for resolving the above-mentioned privacy issue; that is, we try to protect the on-chain privacy of the sensitive data by using homomorphic encryption techniques. Specifically, we constructed a secure comparison protocol that can check the correctness of a logic function directly in the encrypted domain. By using the proposed access control contract and the secure comparison protocol, one can carry out sensitive data-dependent smart contract operations without revealing the data themselves.

Beschreibung: Healthcare facilities are constantly deteriorating due to tight budgets allocated to the upkeep of building assets. This entails the need for improved deterioration modeling of such buildings in order to enforce a predictive maintenance approach that decreases the unexpected occurrence of failures and the corresponding downtime elapsed to repair or replace the faulty asset components. Currently, hospitals utilize subjective deterioration prediction methodologies that mostly rely on age as the sole indicator of degradation to forecast the useful lives of the building components. Thus, this paper aims at formulating a more efficient stochastic deterioration prediction model that integrates the latest observed condition into the forecasting procedure to overcome the subjectivity and uncertainties associated with the currently employed methods. This is achieved by means of developing a hybrid genetic algorithm-based fuzzy Markovian model that simulates the deterioration process given the scarcity of available data demonstrating the condition assessment and evaluation for such critical facilities. A nonhomogeneous transition probability matrix (TPM) based on fuzzy membership functions representing the condition, age and relative deterioration rate of the hospital systems is utilized to address the inherited uncertainties. The TPM is further calibrated by means of a genetic algorithm to circumvent the drawbacks of the expert-based models. A sensitivity analysis was carried out to analyze the possible changes in the output resulting from predefined modifications to the input parameters in order to ensure the robustness of the model. The performance of the deterioration prediction model developed is then validated through a comparison with a state-of-art stochastic model in contrast to real hospital datasets, and the results obtained from the developed model significantly outperformed the long-established Weibull distribution-based deterioration prediction methodology with mean absolute errors of 1.405 and 9.852, respectively. Therefore, the developed model is expected to assist decision-makers in creating more efficient maintenance programs as well as more data-driven capital renewal plans.

Beschreibung: BiFeO3 nanocrystals were applied as the sensing material to isopropanol. The isopropanol sensor based on BiFeO3 nanocrystals shows excellent gas-sensing properties at the optimum working temperature of 240 °C. The sensitivity of as-prepared sensor to 100 ppm isopropanol is 31 and its response and recovery time is as fast as 6 and 17 s. The logarithmic curves of the sensitivity and concentration of BiFeO3 sensors are a very good linear in the low detection range of 2–100 ppm. In addition, the gas sensing mechanism is also discussed. The results suggest that the BiFeO3 nanomaterial can be potentially applied in isopropanol gas detection.

Beschreibung: For the first time, an original compound belonging to the heptazine family has been deposited in the form of thin layers, both by thermal evaporation under vacuum and spin-coating techniques. In both cases, smooth and homogeneous layers have been obtained, and their properties evaluated for eventual applications in the field of organic electronics. The layers have been fully characterized by several concordant techniques, namely UV-visible spectroscopy, steady-state and transient fluorescence in the solid-state, as well as topographic and conductive atomic force microscopy (AFM) used in Kelvin probe force mode (KPFM). Consequently, the afferent energy levels, including Fermi level, have been determined, and show that these new heptazines are promising materials for tailoring the electronic properties of interfaces associated with printed electronic devices. A test experiment showing an improved electron transfer rate from a tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq3) photo-active layer in presence of a heptazine interlayer is finally presented.

Beschreibung: A possible approach for providing new properties for textiles is the insertion of natural ingredients into the textile product during the process of its manufacture. Myrrh has long been used in medicine as an antibacterial and antifungal material. Polylactide (PLA) is a thermoplastic synthetic biopolymer obtained from renewable resources—and due its biodegradability, is also widely used in medicine. In this study, films and multifilament yarns from modified biodegradable PLA granules with ethanolic and aqueous myrrh extracts were developed and characterized. Optical microscopy was used to determine the surface morphology of PLA/myrrh multifilament yarns. Tensile tests, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were applied to determine, consequently, mechanical, optical properties and degree of crystallinity of PLA/myrrh films and multifilament yarns. The chemical composition of PLA/myrrh multifilament yarns was estimated by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy method. The results showed that it is possible to form PLA melt-spun multifilament yarns with myrrh extract. The type of myrrh extract (ethanolic or aqueous) has a significant influence on the mechanical and optical properties of the PLA films and melt-spun yarns. The mechanical properties of PLA films and melt-spun multifilament yarns formed from PLA granules with aqueous myrrh extract decreased 19% and 21% more than PLA with ethanolic extract, respectively. Analysis of UV-vis spectra showed that, due to the yellow hue, the reflectance of PLA films and melt-spun PLA multifilament yarns modified with myrrh extracts decreased exponentially. The DSC test showed that multifilament yarns from PLA modified with aqueous extract had the highest degree of crystallization.

Beschreibung: This paper primarily assesses the scale of adverse changes to the compressive strength of different types of silicates due to the influence of moisture. The study covers three groups of silicate units of different strength classes—15, 20 and 25—obtained from three different manufacturers. It was demonstrated that in all studied groups, moisture significantly decreased the compressive strength by about 30–40%. In addition, microstructural studies were conducted to analyze the relationship between the specific porosity structure of each group of silicate bricks and their compressive strength. On the basis of SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and EDS (Electron Dispersive Spectroscopy) analysis, the elemental composition of individual silicates was determined and the contact zone between the aggregate and the binder was determined, which largely influenced the obtained compressive strength of each silicates. Next, the study referred to the utility of the normative procedure used to determine the strength class of samples with different geometries and at different moisture concentrations. The results of the calculations showed the high accuracy of the normative-based assessment of strength class, regardless of the manufacturer and the moisture values during examination.

Beschreibung: Additive manufacturing (AM) is the term for a number of processes for joining materials to build physical components from a digital 3D model. AM has multiple advantages over other construction techniques, such as freeform, customization, and waste reduction. However, AM components have been evaluated by destructive and non-destructive testing and have shown mechanical issues, such as reduced resistance, anisotropy and voids. The build direction affects the mechanical properties of the built part, including voids of different characteristics. The aim of this work is an extended analysis of void shape by means of X-ray computed tomography (CT) applied to fused deposition modeling (FDM) samples. Furthermore, a relation between the tensile mechanical properties and digital void measurements is established. The results of this work demonstrate that void characteristics such as quantity, size, sphericity and compactness show no obvious variations between the samples. However, the angle between the main void axis and the mechanical load axis α shows a relation for FDM components: when its mean value μ(α) is around 80 (degrees) the yield strength and Young’s modulus are reduced. These results lead to the formulation of a novel criterion that predicts the mechanical behavior of AM components.

Beschreibung: The objective of this work is to study the geometric properties of surface topographies of hot-work tool steel created by electric discharge machining (EDM) using motif and multiscale analysis. The richness of these analyses is tested through calculating the strengths of the correlations between discharge energies and resulting surface characterization parameters, focusing on the most representative surface features—craters, and how they change with scale. Surfaces were created by EDM using estimated energies from 150 to 9468 µJ and measured by focus variation microscope. The measured topographies consist of overlapping microcraters, of which the geometry was characterized using three different analysis: conventional with ISO parameters, and motif and multiscale curvature tensor analysis. Motif analysis uses watershed segmentation which allows extraction and geometrically characterization of each crater. Curvature tensor analysis focuses on the characterization of principal curvatures and their function and their evolution with scale. Strong correlations (R2 〉 0.9) were observed between craters height, diameter, area and curvature using linear and logarithmic regressions. Conventional areal parameter related to heights dispersion were found to correlate stronger using logarithmic regression. Geometric characterization of process-specific topographic formations is considered to be a natural and intuitive way of analyzing the complexity of studied surfaces. The presented approach allows extraction of information directly relating to the shape and size of topographic features of interest. In the tested conditions, the surface finish is mostly affected and potentially controlled by discharge energy at larger scales which is associated with sizes of fabricated craters.

Beschreibung: Laser irradiation is a popular method to produce microtextures on metal surfaces. However, the common laser-produced microtextures were hierarchical (multiscale), which may limit their applicability. In this paper, a method of two-step laser irradiation, combining first-step strong ablation and sequentially second-step gentle ablation, was presented to produce micron-rough surface with single-scale microtextures. The effect of laser fluence on the Ti–6Al–4V surface morphology and wettability were investigated in detail. The morphology results revealed that the microtextures produced using this method gradually evolved from multiscale to single-scale meanwhile from microprotrusions to microholes with increasing the second-step laser fluence from 0.0 to 2.4 J/cm2. The wettability and EDS/XPS results indicated that attributing to the rich TiO2 content and micron roughness produced by laser irradiation, all the two-step laser-irradiated surfaces exhibited superhydrophilicity. In addition, after silanization, all these superhydrophilic surfaces immediately turned to be superhydrophobic with close water contact angles of 155–162°. However, due to the absence of nanotextures, the water-rolling angle on the superhydrophobic surfaces with single-scale microtextures distinctly larger than those with multiscale ones. Finally, using the two-step laser-irradiation method and assisted with silanization, multifunctional superhydrophobic Ti–6Al–4V surfaces were achieved, including self-cleaning, guiding of the water-rolling direction and anisotropic water-rolling angles (like the rice-leaf), etc.

Beschreibung: The ultrasonic modulation technique, developed by inspecting the nonlinearity from the interactions of crack surfaces, has been considered very effective in detecting fatigue cracks in the early stage of the crack development due to its high sensitivity. The wave modulation is the frequency shift of a wave passing through a crack and does not occur in intact specimens. Various parameters affect the modulation of the wave, but quantitative analysis for each variable has not been comprehensively conducted due to the complicated interaction of irregular crack surfaces. In this study, specimens with a constant crack width are manufactured, and the effects of various excitation parameters on modulated wave generation are analyzed. Based on the analysis, an effective crack detection algorithm is proposed and verified by applying the algorithm to fatigue cracks. For the quantitative analysis, tests are repeatedly conducted by varying parameters. As a result, the excitation intensity shows a strong linear relationship with the amount of modulated waves, and the increase of modulated wave is expected as crack length increases. However, the change in the dynamic characteristics of the specimen with the crack length is more dominant in the results. The excitation frequency is the most dominant variable to generate the modulated waves, but a direct correlation is not observed as it is difficult to measure the interaction of crack surfaces. A numerical analysis technique is developed to accurately simulate the movement and interaction of the crack surface. The crack detection algorithm, improved by using the observations from the quantitative analyses, can distinguish the occurrence of modulated waves from the ambient noises, and the state of the specimens is determined by using two nonlinear indexes.

Beschreibung: Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) are widely used as a proxy for bathymetric data and several studies have attempted to improve DEM accuracy for hydrodynamic (HD) modeling. Most of these studies attempted to quantitatively improve estimates of channel conveyance (assuming a non-braided morphology) rather than accounting for the actual channel planform. Accurate representation of river conveyance and planform in a DEM is critical to HD modeling and can be achieved with a combination of remote sensing (e.g., satellite image) and field data, such as water surface elevation (WSE). Therefore, the objectives of this study are (i) to develop an algorithm for predicting channel conveyance and characterizing planform via satellite images and in situ WSE and (ii) to estimate discharge using the predicted conveyance via an HD model. The algorithm is named River Bathymetry via Satellite Image Compilation (RiBaSIC) and uses Landsat satellite imagery, Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) DEM, Multi-Error-Removed Improved-Terrain (MERIT) DEM, and observed WSE. The algorithm is tested on four study areas along the Willamette River, Kushiyara River, Jamuna River, and Solimoes River. Channel slope and predicted hydraulic radius are subsequently estimated for approximating Manning’s roughness factor. Two-dimensional HD models using DEMs modified by the RiBaSIC algorithm and corresponding Manning’s roughness factors are employed for discharge estimation. The proposed algorithm can represent river planform and conveyance in single-channeled, meandering, wandering, and braided river reaches. Additionally, the HD models estimated discharge within 14–19% relative root mean squared error (RRMSE) in simulation of five years period.

Beschreibung: This study aimed to develop series analytical solutions based on the Mindlin plate theory for the free vibrations of functionally graded material (FGM) rectangular plates. The material properties of FGM rectangular plates are assumed to vary along their thickness, and the volume fractions of the plate constituents are defined by a simple power-law function. The series solutions consist of the Fourier cosine series and auxiliary functions of polynomials. The series solutions were established by satisfying governing equations and boundary conditions in the expanded space of the Fourier cosine series. The proposed solutions were validated through comprehensive convergence studies on the first six vibration frequencies of square plates under four combinations of boundary conditions and through comparison of the obtained convergent results with those in the literature. The convergence studies indicated that the solutions obtained for different modes could converge from the upper or lower bounds to the exact values or in an oscillatory manner. The present solutions were further employed to determine the first six vibration frequencies of FGM rectangular plates with various aspect ratios, thickness-to-width ratios, distributions of material properties and combinations of boundary conditions.

Beschreibung: Conventional technologies for ureteral stent fabrication suffer from major inconveniences such as the development of encrustations and bacteria biofilm formation. These drawbacks typically lead to the failure of the device, significant patient discomfort and an additional surgery to remove and replace the stent in the worst cases. This work focuses on the preparation of a new nanocomposite material able to show drug elution properties, biodegradation and eventually potential antibacterial activity. Poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) or the crosslinked poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)-co-poly(acrylic acid) hydrogels were prepared by the radical polymerization method and combined with a biodegradable and antibacterial filling agent, i.e., flower-like Zinc Oxide (ZnO) micropowders obtained via the hydrothermal route. The physico-chemical analyses revealed the correct incorporation of ZnO within the hydrogel matrix and its highly mesoporous structure and surface area, ideal for drug incorporation. Two different anti-inflammatory drugs (Ibuprofen and Diclofenac) were loaded within each composite and the release profile was monitored up to two weeks in artificial urine (AU) and even at different pH values in AU to simulate pathological conditions. The addition of mesoporous ZnO micropowders to the hydrogel did not negatively affect the drug loading properties of the hydrogel and it was successfully allowed to mitigate undesirable burst-release effects. Furthermore, the sustained release of the drugs over time was observed at neutral pH, with kinetic constants (k) as low as 0.05 h−1. By exploiting the pH-tunable swelling properties of the hydrogel, an even more sustained release was achieved in acidic and alkaline conditions especially at short release times, with a further reduction of burst effects (k ≈ 0.01–0.02 h−1). The nanocomposite system herein proposed represents a new material formulation for preparing innovative drug eluting stents with intrinsic antibacterial properties.

Beschreibung: Quantifying river discharge is a critical component for hydrological studies, floodplain ecological conservation research, and water resources management. In recent years, a series of remote sensing-based discharge estimation methods have been developed. An example is the use of the near infrared (NIR) band of optical satellite images, with the principle of calculating the ratio between a stable land pixel for calibration (C) and a pixel within the river for measurement (M), applying a linear regression between C/M series and observed discharge series. This study trialed the C/M method, utilizing the Harmonized Landsat and Sentinel-2 (HLS) surface reflectance product on relatively small rivers with 30~100 m widths. Two study sites with different river characteristics and geographic settings in the Murray-Darling Basin (MDB) of Australia were selected as case studies. Two independent sets of HLS data and gauged discharge data for the 2017 and 2018 water years were acquired for modeling and validation, respectively. Results reveal high consistency between the HLS-derived discharge and gauged discharge at both sites. The Relative Root Mean Square Errors are 53% and 19%, and the Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency coefficients are 0.24 and 0.69 for the two sites. This study supports the effectiveness of applying the fine-resolution HLS for modeling discharge on small rivers based on the C/M methodology, which also provides evidence of using multisource synthesized datasets as the input for discharge estimation.

Beschreibung: The capture of a target spacecraft by a chaser is an on-orbit docking operation that requires an accurate, reliable, and robust object recognition algorithm. Vision-based guided spacecraft relative motion during close-proximity maneuvers has been consecutively applied using dynamic modeling as a spacecraft on-orbit service system. This research constructs a vision-based pose estimation model that performs image processing via a deep convolutional neural network. The pose estimation model was constructed by repurposing a modified pretrained GoogLeNet model with the available Unreal Engine 4 rendered dataset of the Soyuz spacecraft. In the implementation, the convolutional neural network learns from the data samples to create correlations between the images and the spacecraft’s six degrees-of-freedom parameters. The experiment has compared an exponential-based loss function and a weighted Euclidean-based loss function. Using the weighted Euclidean-based loss function, the implemented pose estimation model achieved moderately high performance with a position accuracy of 92.53 percent and an error of 1.2 m. The in-attitude prediction accuracy can reach 87.93 percent, and the errors in the three Euler angles do not exceed 7.6 degrees. This research can contribute to spacecraft detection and tracking problems. Although the finished vision-based model is specific to the environment of synthetic dataset, the model could be trained further to address actual docking operations in the future.

Beschreibung: The harmonic closeness centrality measure associates, to each node of a graph, the average of the inverse of its distances from all the other nodes (by assuming that unreachable nodes are at infinite distance). This notion has been adapted to temporal graphs (that is, graphs in which edges can appear and disappear during time) and in this paper we address the question of finding the top-k nodes for this metric. Computing the temporal closeness for one node can be done in O(m) time, where m is the number of temporal edges. Therefore computing exactly the closeness for all nodes, in order to find the ones with top closeness, would require O(nm) time, where n is the number of nodes. This time complexity is intractable for large temporal graphs. Instead, we show how this measure can be efficiently approximated by using a “backward” temporal breadth-first search algorithm and a classical sampling technique. Our experimental results show that the approximation is excellent for nodes with high closeness, allowing us to detect them in practice in a fraction of the time needed for computing the exact closeness of all nodes. We validate our approach with an extensive set of experiments.

Beschreibung: In view of the strong constraint zones of the concrete structure on the pile foundation, there are some differences between the calculation results of the isotropic equivalent pile foundation by the volume replacement ratio method and the actual engineering. In this paper, referring to the relevant algorithm of rock mass with anchor, the anchor and rock mass are, respectively, compared to pile and surrounding soil foundation. Eshelby equivalent inclusion theory is introduced into the equivalent mechanical model of soil foundation with pile, and a new equivalent pile foundation algorithm considering anisotropic elastic constant is compiled by Fortran. Three kinds of calculation methods are used to calculate the stress field of the concrete structure of the large pump station on the pile foundation during the construction period, and the stress in the strong constraint zones of the concrete structure are mainly analyzed. It is found that the calculation accuracy of Algorithm 3 is the highest, and the calculation results of Algorithm 2 can be modified by the coefficients to achieve the calculation accuracy of Algorithm 3 and the calculation efficiency is actually improved. Finally, the accuracy of the proposed method is verified by the engineering measured data.

Beschreibung: Computer programmers require various instructive information during coding and development. Such information is dispersed in different sources like language documentation, wikis, and forums. As an information exchange platform, programmers broadly utilize Stack Overflow, a Web-based Question Answering site. In this paper, we propose a recommender system which uses a supervised machine learning approach to investigate Stack Overflow posts to present instructive information for the programmers. This might be helpful for the programmers to solve programming problems that they confront with in their daily life. We analyzed posts related to two most popular programming languages—Python and PHP. We performed a few trials and found that the supervised approach could effectively manifold valuable information from our corpus. We validated the performance of our system from human perception which showed an accuracy of 71%. We also presented an interactive interface for the users that satisfied the users’ query with the matching sentences with most instructive information.

Beschreibung: On 2 February 2018, the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES) ZhangHeng 01 (ZH-01) was successfully launched, carrying on board, in addition to a suite of plasma and particle physics instruments, a high precision magnetometer package (HPM), able to observe the ultra-low frequency (ULF) waves. In this paper, a night time Pi2 pulsation observed by CSES is reported for the first time. This Pi2 event occurred on 3 September 2018, and began at 14:30 UT (02:37 magnetic local time), when the satellite was in the southern hemisphere between −49 and −13 magnetic latitude (MLAT). Kakioka (KAK) ground station in Japan detected the same Pi2 between 14:30–14:42 UT (23:30–23:42 local time). The Pi2 oscillations in the compressional, toroidal, and poloidal components at the CSES satellite and the H-component at the KAK station are investigated by estimating coherence, amplitude, and cross-phase. We noticed a high degree of similarity between the Pi2 event in the horizontal component at KAK and the ionospheric fluctuations in the compressional component at CSES. This high correlation indicated the magnetospheric source of the Pi2 event. In addition, Pi2 is exhibited clearly in the δBy component at CSES, which is highly correlated with the ground H component, so the Pi2 event could be explained by the Substorm Current Wedge (SCW). This interpretation is further confirmed by checking the compressional component of Van Allen Probe (VAP) B satellite inside the plasmasphere, which, for the first time, gives observational support for an earlier model. This ULF wave observation shows the consistency and reliability of the high precision magnetometer (HPM) equipped by two fluxgate magnetometers (FGM1 and FGM2) onboard CSES.

Beschreibung: Aircrafts require a large amount of fuel in order to generate enough power to perform a flight. That consumption causes the emission of polluting particles such as carbon dioxide, which is implicated in global warming. This paper proposes an algorithm which can provide the 3D reference trajectory that minimizes the flight costs and the fuel consumption. The proposed algorithm was conceived using the Floyd–Warshall methodology as a reference. Weather was taken into account by using forecasts provided by Weather Canada. The search space was modeled as a directional weighted graph. Fuel burn was computed using the Base of Aircraft DAta (BADA) model developed by Eurocontrol. The trajectories delivered by the developed algorithm were compared to long-haul flight plans computed by a European airliner and to as-flown trajectories obtained from Flightradar24®. The results reveal that up to 2000 kg of fuel can be reduced per flight, and flight time can be also reduced by up to 11 min.

Beschreibung: High-lying vegetated marshes and low-lying bare mudflats have been suggested to be two stable states in intertidal ecosystems. Being able to identify the conditions enabling the shifts between these two stable states is of great importance for ecosystem management in general and the restoration of tidal marsh ecosystems in particular. However, the number of studies investigating the conditions for state shifts from bare mudflats to vegetated marshes remains relatively low. We developed a GIS approach to identify the locations of expected shifts from bare intertidal flats to vegetated marshes along a large estuary (Western Scheldt estuary, SW Netherlands), by analyzing the interactions between spatial patterns of vegetation biomass, elevation, tidal currents, and wind waves. We analyzed false-color aerial images for locating marshes, LIDAR-based digital elevation models, and spatial model simulations of tidal currents and wind waves at the whole estuary scale (~326 km²). Our results demonstrate that: (1) Bimodality in vegetation biomass and intertidal elevation co-occur; (2) the tidal currents and wind waves change abruptly at the transitions between the low-elevation bare state and high-elevation vegetated state. These findings suggest that biogeomorphic feedback between vegetation growth, currents, waves, and sediment dynamics causes the state shifts from bare mudflats to vegetated marshes. Our findings are translated into a GIS approach (logistic regression) to identify the locations of shifts from bare to vegetated states during the studied period based on spatial patterns of elevation, current, and wave orbital velocities. This GIS approach can provide a scientific basis for the management and restoration of tidal marshes.

Beschreibung: The bimodal-grain-size 7075 aluminium alloys containing varied ratios of large and small 7075 aluminium powders were prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The large powder was 100 ± 15 μm in diameter and the small one was 10 ± 5 μm in diameter. The 7075 aluminium alloys was completely densified under the 500 °C sintering temperature and 60 MPa pressure. The large powders constituted coarse grain zone, and the small powders constituted fine grain zone in sintered 7075 aluminium alloys. The microstructural and microchemical difference between the large and small powders was remained in coarse and fine grain zones in bulk alloys after SPS sintering, which allowed for us to investigate the effects of microstructure and microchemistry on passive properties of oxide film formed on sintered alloys. The average diameter of intermetallic phases was 201.3 nm in coarse grain zone, while its vale was 79.8 nm in fine grain zone. The alloying element content in intermetallic phases in coarse grain zone was 33% to 48% higher than that on fine grain zone. The alloying element depletion zone surrounding intermetallic phases in coarse grain zone showed a bigger width and a more severe element depletion. The coarse grain zone in alloys showed a bigger electrochemical heterogeneity as compared to fine grain zone. The passive film formed on coarse grain zone had a thicker thickness and a point defect density of 2.4 × 1024 m−3, and the film on fine grain zone had a thinner thickness and a point defect density of 4.0 × 1023 m−3. The film resistance was 3.25 × 105 Ωcm2 on coarse grain zone, while it was 6.46 × 105 Ωcm2 on fine grain zone. The passive potential range of sintered alloys increased from 457 mV to 678 mV, while the corrosion current density decreased from 8.59 × 10−7 A/cm2 to 6.78 × 10−7 A/cm2 as fine grain zone increasing from 0% to 100%, which implied that the corrosion resistance of alloys increased with the increasing content of fine grains. The passive film on coarse grain zone exhibited bigger corrosion cavities after pitting initiation compared to that on fine grain zone. The passive film formed on fine grain zone showed a better corrosion resistance. The protectiveness of passive film was mainly determined by defect density rather than the thickness in this work.

Beschreibung: High frequency and spatially explicit irrigated land maps are important for understanding the patterns and impacts of consumptive water use by agriculture. We built annual, 30 m resolution irrigation maps using Google Earth Engine for the years 1986–2018 for 11 western states within the conterminous U.S. Our map classifies lands into four classes: irrigated agriculture, dryland agriculture, uncultivated land, and wetlands. We built an extensive geospatial database of land cover from each class, including over 50,000 human-verified irrigated fields, 38,000 dryland fields, and over 500,000 km 2 of uncultivated lands. We used 60,000 point samples from 28 years to extract Landsat satellite imagery, as well as climate, meteorology, and terrain data to train a Random Forest classifier. Using a spatially independent validation dataset of 40,000 points, we found our classifier has an overall binary classification (irrigated vs. unirrigated) accuracy of 97.8%, and a four-class overall accuracy of 90.8%. We compared our results to Census of Agriculture irrigation estimates over the seven years of available data and found good overall agreement between the 2832 county-level estimates (r 2 = 0.90), and high agreement when estimates are aggregated to the state level (r 2 = 0.94). We analyzed trends over the 33-year study period, finding an increase of 15% (15,000 km 2 ) in irrigated area in our study region. We found notable decreases in irrigated area in developing urban areas and in the southern Central Valley of California and increases in the plains of eastern Colorado, the Columbia River Basin, the Snake River Plain, and northern California.

Beschreibung: Due to the influence of equipment instability and surveying environment, scattering echoes and other factors, it is sometimes difficult to obtain high-quality sub-bottom profile (SBP) images by traditional denoising methods. In this paper, a novel SBP image denoising method is developed for obtaining underlying clean images based on a non-local low-rank framework. Firstly, to take advantage of the inherent layering structures of the SBP image, a direction image is obtained and used as a guidance image. Secondly, the robust guidance weight for accurately selecting the similar patches is given. A novel denoising method combining the weight and a non-local low-rank filtering framework is proposed. Thirdly, after discussing the filtering parameter settings, the proposed method is tested in actual measurements of sub-bottom, both in deep water and shallow water. Experimental results validate the excellent performance of the proposed method. Finally, the proposed method is verified and compared with other methods quantificationally based on the synthetic images and has achieved the total average peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of 21.77 and structural similarity index (SSIM) of 0.573, which is far better than other methods.

Beschreibung: Joint sealant is affected by various environmental factors in service, such as different temperatures, water soaking, ultraviolet and so on. In this paper, the VAE emulsion–cement compositejoint sealant was pretreated under multiple simulation environments. Thereafter, the degradation rules of fixed elongation and tensile properties of joint sealants at different mix proportions were systemically investigated under the action of external environments (temperature, water soaking and ultraviolet), and the influence mechanisms of diverse environmental factors were analyzed. The research results suggested that, under the action of external environments, the VAE emulsion–cement composite joint sealants exhibited degradation effects to varying degrees. After the addition of plasticizer, the joint sealants had reduced cohesion strength in low temperature environment and enhanced flexible deformability. The addition of water repellent improved the water resistance of joint sealants. Meanwhile, adding ultraviolet shield agent partially improved the ultraviolet radiation aging resistance. A greater powder–liquid ratio led to the lower flexibility of joint sealants, but superior water resistance and ultraviolet radiation aging resistance.

Beschreibung: Dryland ecosystems are frequently struck by droughts. Yet, woody vegetation is often able to recover from mortality events once precipitation returns to pre-drought conditions. Climate change, however, may impact woody vegetation resilience due to more extreme and frequent droughts. Thus, better understanding how woody vegetation responds to drought events is essential. We used a phenology-based remote sensing approach coupled with field data to estimate the severity and recovery rates of a large scale die-off event that occurred in 2014–2015 in Senegal. Novel low (L-band) and high-frequency (Ku-band) passive microwave vegetation optical depth (VOD), and optical MODIS data, were used to estimate woody vegetation dynamics. The relative importance of soil, human-pressure, and before-drought vegetation dynamics influencing the woody vegetation response to the drought were assessed. The die-off in 2014–2015 represented the highest dry season VOD drop for the studied period (1989–2017), even though the 2014 drought was not as severe as the droughts in the 1980s and 1990s. The spatially explicit Die-off Severity Index derived in this study, at 500 m resolution, highlights woody plants mortality in the study area. Soil physical characteristics highly affected die-off severity and post-disturbance recovery, but pre-drought biomass accumulation (i.e., in areas that benefited from above-normal rainfall conditions before the 2014 drought) was the most important variable in explaining die-off severity. This study provides new evidence supporting a better understanding of the “greening Sahel”, suggesting that a sudden increase in woody vegetation biomass does not necessarily imply a stable ecosystem recovery from the droughts in the 1980s. Instead, prolonged above-normal rainfall conditions prior to a drought may result in the accumulation of woody biomass, creating the basis for potentially large-scale woody vegetation die-off events due to even moderate dry spells.

Beschreibung: Plasticity and functional diversity of macrophages play an important role in resisting pathogens invasion, tumor progression and tissue repair. At present, nanodrug formulations are becoming increasingly important to induce and control the functional diversity of macrophages. In this framework, the internalization process of nanodrugs is co-regulated by a complex interplay of biochemistry, cell physiology and cell mechanics. From a biophysical perspective, little is known about cellular mechanics’ modulation induced by the nanodrug carrier’s internalization. In this study, we used the polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA)–polyethylene glycol (PEG) nanofibers as a model drug carrier, and we investigated their influence on macrophage mechanics. Interestingly, the nanofibers internalized in macrophages induced a local increase of stiffness detected by atomic force microscopy (AFM) nanomechanical investigation. Confocal laser scanning microscopy revealed a thickening of actin filaments around nanofibers during the internalization process. Following geometry and mechanical properties by AFM, indentation experiments are virtualized in a finite element model simulation. It turned out that it is necessary to include an additional actin wrapping layer around nanofiber in order to achieve similar reaction force of AFM experiments, consistent with confocal observation. The quantitative investigation of actin reconfiguration around internalized nanofibers can be exploited to develop novel strategies for drug delivery.

Beschreibung: Augmented reality can improve construction and facility management by visualizing an as-planned model on its corresponding surface for fast, easy, and correct information retrieval. This requires the localization registration of an as-built model in an as-planned model. However, the localization and registration of indoor environments fail, owing to self-similarity in an indoor environment, relatively large as-planned models, and the presence of additional unplanned objects. Therefore, this paper proposes a computer vision-based method to (1) homogenize indoor as-planned and as-built models, (2) reduce the search space of model matching, and (3) localize the structure (e.g., room) for registration of the scanned area in its as-planned model. This method extracts a representative horizontal cross section from the as-built and as-planned point clouds to make these models similar, restricts unnecessary transformation to reduce the search space, and corresponds the line features for the estimation of the registration transformation matrix. The performance of this method, in terms of registration accuracy, is evaluated on as-built point clouds of rooms and a hallway on a building floor. A rotational error of 0.005 rad and a translational error of 0.088 m are observed in the experiments. Hence, the geometric feature described on a representative cross section with transformation restrictions can be a computationally cost-effective solution for indoor localization and registration.

Beschreibung: Exsolved perovskites can be obtained from lanthanum ferrites, such as La0.6Sr0.4Fe0.8Co0.2O3, as result of Ni doping and thermal treatments. Ni can be simply added to the perovskite by an incipient wetness method. Thermal treatments that favor the exsolution process include calcination in air (e.g., 500 °C) and subsequent reduction in diluted H2 at 800 °C. These processes allow producing a two-phase material consisting of a Ruddlesden–Popper-type structure and a solid oxide solution e.g., α-Fe100-y-zCoyNizOx oxide. The formed electrocatalyst shows sufficient electronic conductivity under reducing environment at the Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) anode. Outstanding catalytic properties are observed for the direct oxidation of dry fuels in SOFCs, including H2, methane, syngas, methanol, glycerol, and propane. This anode electrocatalyst can be combined with a full density electrolyte based on Gadolinia-doped ceria or with La0.8Sr0.2Ga0.8Mg0.2O3 (LSGM) or BaCe0.9Y0.1O3-δ (BYCO) to form a complete perovskite structure-based cell. Moreover, the exsolved perovskite can be used as a coating layer or catalytic pre-layer of a conventional Ni-YSZ anode. Beside the excellent catalytic activity, this material also shows proper durability and tolerance to sulfur poisoning. Research challenges and future directions are discussed. A new approach combining an exsolved perovskite and an NiCu alloy to further enhance the fuel flexibility of the composite catalyst is also considered. In this review, the preparation methods, physicochemical characteristics, and surface properties of exsoluted fine nanoparticles encapsulated on the metal-depleted perovskite, electrochemical properties for the direct oxidation of dry fuels, and related electrooxidation mechanisms are examined and discussed.

Beschreibung: The drilling of holes in CFRP/Ti (Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Plastic/Titanium alloy) alloy stacks is one of the frequently used mechanical operations during the manufacturing of fastening assemblies in temporary civil aircraft. A combination of inhomogeneous behavior and poor machinability of CFRP/Ti alloy stacks in one short drilling brought challenges to the manufacturing community. The impact of the drilling temperature and time delay factor under various cutting conditions on hole accuracy when machining CFRP/Ti alloy stacks is poorly studied. In this paper, the drilling temperature, the phenomenon of thermal expansion of the drill tool, and hole accuracy are investigated. An experimental study was carried out using thermocouples, the coordinate measuring machine method, and finite element analysis. The results showed that the time delay factor varied from 5 (s) to 120 (s), influences the thermal-dependent properties of CFRP, and leads to an increase in hole roundness. Additionally, the thermal expansion of the drill significantly contributes to the deviation of the hole diameter in Ti alloy.

Beschreibung: Salt marshes provide important services to coastal ecosystems in the southeastern United States. In many locations, salt marsh habitats are threatened by coastal development and erosion, necessitating large-scale monitoring. Assessing vegetation height across the extent of a marsh can provide a comprehensive analysis of its health, as vegetation height is associated with Above Ground Biomass (AGB) and can be used to track degradation or growth over time. Traditional methods to do this, however, rely on manual measurements of stem heights that can cause harm to the marsh ecosystem. Moreover, manual measurements are limited in scale and are often time and labor intensive. Unoccupied Aircraft Systems (UAS) can provide an alternative to manual measurements and generate continuous results across a large spatial extent in a short period of time. In this study, a multirotor UAS equipped with optical Red Green Blue (RGB) and multispectral sensors was used to survey five salt marshes in Beaufort, North Carolina. Structure-from-Motion (SfM) photogrammetry of the resultant imagery allowed for continuous modeling of the entire marsh ecosystem in a three-dimensional space. From these models, vegetation height was extracted and compared to ground-based manual measurements. Vegetation heights generated from UAS data consistently under-predicted true vegetation height proportionally and a transformation was developed to predict true vegetation height. Vegetation height may be used as a proxy for Above Ground Biomass (AGB) and contribute to blue carbon estimates, which describe the carbon sequestered in marine ecosystems. Employing this transformation, our results indicate that UAS and SfM are capable of producing accurate assessments of salt marsh health via consistent and accurate vegetation height measurements.

Beschreibung: Accounting for endmember variability is a challenging issue when unmixing hyperspectral data. This paper models the variability that is associated with each endmember as a conical hull defined by extremal pixels from the data set. These extremal pixels are considered as so-called prototypal endmember spectra that have meaningful physical interpretation. Capitalizing on this data-driven modeling, the pixels of the hyperspectral image are then described as combinations of these prototypal endmember spectra weighted by bundling coefficients and spatial abundances. The proposed unmixing model not only extracts and clusters the prototypal endmember spectra, but also estimates the abundances of each endmember. The performance of the approach is illustrated thanks to experiments conducted on simulated and real hyperspectral data and it outperforms state-of-the-art methods.

Beschreibung: Assessments of long-term changes of air quality and global radiative forcing at a large scale heavily rely on satellite aerosol optical depth (AOD) datasets, particularly their temporal binning products. Although some attempts focusing on the validation of long-term satellite AOD have been conducted, there is still a lack of comprehensive quantification and understanding of the representativeness of satellite AOD at different temporal binning scales. Here, we evaluated the performances of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) AOD products at various temporal scales by comparing the MODIS AOD datasets from both the Terra and Aqua satellites with the entire global AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET) observation archive between 2000 and 2017. The uncertainty levels of the MODIS hourly and daily AOD products were similarly high, indicating that MODIS AOD retrievals could be used to represent daily aerosol conditions. The MODIS data showed the reduced quality when integrated from the daily to monthly scale, where the relative mean bias (RMB) changed from 1.09 to 1.21 for MODIS Terra and from 1.04 to 1.17 for MODIS Aqua, respectively. The limitation of valid data availability within a month appeared to be the primary reason for the increased uncertainties in the monthly binning products, and the monthly data associated uncertainties could be reduced when the number of valid AOD retrievals reached 15 times in one month. At all three temporal scales, the uncertainty levels of satellite AOD products decreased with increasing AOD values. The results of this study could provide crucial information for satellite AOD users to better understand the reliability of different temporal AOD binning products and associated uncertainties in their derived long-term trends.

Beschreibung: Human activities are mainly responsible for the Aral Sea crisis, and excessive farmland expansion and unreasonable irrigation regimes are the main manifestations. The conflicting needs of agricultural water consumption and ecological water demand of the Aral Sea are increasingly prominent. However, the quantitative relationship among the water balance elements in the oasis located in the lower reaches of the Amu Darya River Basin and their impact on the retreat of the Aral Sea remain unclear. Therefore, this study focused on the water consumption of the Nukus irrigation area in the delta of the Amu Darya River and analyzed the water balance variations and their impacts on the Aral Sea. The surface energy balance algorithm for land (SEBAL) was employed to retrieve daily and seasonal evapotranspiration (ET) levels from 1992 to 2018, and a water balance equation was established based on the results of a remote sensing evapotranspiration inversion. The results indicated that the actual evapotranspiration (ETa) simulated by the SEBAL model matched the crop evapotranspiration (ETc) calculated by the Penman–Monteith method well, and the correlation coefficients between the two ETa sources were greater than 0.8. The total ETa levels in the growing seasons decreased from 1992 to 2005 and increased from 2005 to 2015, which is consistent with the changes in the cultivated land area and inflows from the Amu Darya River. In 2000, 2005 and 2010, the groundwater recharge volumes into the Aral Sea during the growing season were 6.74×109 m3, 1.56×109 m3 and 8.40×109 m3; respectively; in the dry year of 2012, regional ET exceeded the river inflow, and 2.36×109 m3 of groundwater was extracted to supplement the shortage of irrigation water. There is a significant two-year lag correlation between the groundwater level and the area of the southern Aral Sea. This study can provide useful information for water resources management in the Aral Sea region.

Beschreibung: In the literature of pan-sharpening based on neural networks, high resolution multispectral images as ground-truth labels generally are unavailable. To tackle the issue, a common method is to degrade original images into a lower resolution space for supervised training under the Wald’s protocol. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised pan-sharpening framework, referred to as “perceptual pan-sharpening”. This novel method is based on auto-encoder and perceptual loss, and it does not need the degradation step for training. For performance boosting, we also suggest a novel training paradigm, called “first supervised pre-training and then unsupervised fine-tuning”, to train the unsupervised framework. Experiments on the QuickBird dataset show that the framework with different generator architectures could get comparable results with the traditional supervised counterpart, and the novel training paradigm performs better than random initialization. When generalizing to the IKONOS dataset, the unsupervised framework could still get competitive results over the supervised ones.

Beschreibung: Headland rips, sometimes referred to as boundary rips, are rip currents flowing against natural or artificial obstructions extending seaward from the beach, such as headland or groynes. They can be driven either by the deflection of the longshore current against the obstacle or by alongshore variation in breaking wave height due to wave shadowing in the lee of the obstacle. The driving mechanism therefore essentially depends on the angle of wave incidence with respect to the natural or artificial obstruction. We analyze 42 days of velocity profile measurements against a natural headland at the high-energy meso-macrotidal beach of Anglet, southwest France. Measurements were collected in 6.5–10.5-m depth as tide elevation varied, during the autumn–winter period with offshore significant wave height and period ranging 0.9–6 m and 8–16 s, respectively, and the angle of wave incidence ranging from −20 ∘ to 20 ∘ . Here we analyze deflection rip configurations, corresponding to approximately 24 days of measurements, for which the current meter was alternatively located in the rip neck, rip head or away from the rip as wave and tide conditions changed. Deflection rips were associated with large offshore-directed velocities (up to 0.6 m/s depth-averaged velocities) and tide modulation for low- to moderate-energy waves. The vertical profile of deflection rips was found to vary from depth-uniform in the rip neck to strongly depth-varying further offshore in the rip head with maximum velocities near the surface. Very low frequency motions of the rip were dramatic, ranging 10–60 min with a dominant peak period of approximately 40 min, i.e., with longer periods than commonly reported. The strong offshore-directed velocities measured well beyond the surf zone edge provide new insight into deflection rips as a dominant mechanism for water and sediment exchanges between embayed (or structurally-controlled) beaches and the inner-shelf and/or the adjacent embayments.

Beschreibung: In this work, piezoelectric (PZT) actuators were surface bonded on or embedded in a composite laminate and subjected to an electric voltage across the thickness, resulting in a bending effect on the composite laminate. An analytical expression of the deflection of a simply supported cross-ply composite laminate induced by distributed piezoelectric actuators was derived on the basis of classical plate theory and composite mechanics. The theoretical solution can be used to predict the deformation of the composite laminate. Series of parametric studies were performed to investigate the effects of location, size, and embedded depth of PZT actuators on the composite laminate deformation. The analytical predictions were verified with finite element results. A close agreement was achieved. It demonstrated that the present approach provided a simple solution to predict and control the deformed shape of a composite laminate induced by distributed PZT actuators.

Beschreibung: Roadside vegetation can affect the performance of installed road lighting. We demonstrate a workflow in which a car-mounted measurement system is used to assess the light-obstructing effect of roadside vegetation. The mobile mapping system (MMS) includes a panoramic camera system, laser scanner, inertial measurement unit, and satellite positioning system. The workflow and the measurement system were applied to a road section of Munkkiniemenranta, Helsinki, Finland, in 2015 and 2019. The relative luminance distribution on a road surface and the obstructing vegetation were measured before and after roadside vegetation pruning applying a luminance-calibrated mobile mapping system. The difference between the two measurements is presented, and the opportunities provided by the mobile 3D luminance measurement system are discussed.

Beschreibung: Density-dependent population growth regulates long-term urban expansion and shapes distinctive socioeconomic trends. Despite a marked heterogeneity in the spatial distribution of the resident population, Mediterranean European countries are considered more homogeneous than countries in other European regions as far as settlement structure and processes of metropolitan growth are concerned. However, rising socioeconomic inequalities among Southern European regions reflect latent demographic and territorial transformations that require further investigation. An integrated assessment of the spatio-temporal distribution of resident populations in more than 1000 municipalities (1961–2011) was carried out in this study to characterize density-dependent processes of metropolitan growth in Greece. Using geographically weighted regressions, the results of our study identified distinctive local relationships between population density and growth rates over time. Our results demonstrate that demographic growth rates were non-linearly correlated with other variables, such as population density, with positive and negative impacts during the first (1961–1971) and the last (2001–2011) observation decade, respectively. These findings outline a progressive shift over time from density-dependent processes of population growth, reflecting a rapid development of large metropolitan regions (Athens, Thessaloniki) in the 1960s, to density-dependent processes more evident in medium-sized cities and accessible rural regions in the 2000s. Density-independent processes of population growth have been detected in the intermediate study period (1971–2001). This work finally discusses how a long-term analysis of demographic growth, testing for density-dependent mechanisms, may clarify the intrinsic role of population concentration and dispersion in different phases of the metropolitan cycle in Mediterranean Europe.

Beschreibung: Background: Health benefits from physical activity (PA) can be achieved by following the WHO recommendation for PA. To increase PA in inactive individuals, digital interventions can provide cost-effective and low-threshold access. Moreover, gamification elements can raise the motivation for PA. This study analyzed which factors (personality traits, app features, gamification) are relevant to increasing PA within this target group. Methods: N = 808 inactive participants (f = 480; m = 321; age = 48 ± 6) were integrated into the analysis of the desire for PA, the appearance of personality traits and resulting interest in app features and gamification. The statistical analysis included chi-squared tests, one-way ANOVA and regression analysis. Results: The main interests in PA were fitness (97%) and outdoor activities (75%). No significant interaction between personality traits, interest in PA goals, app features and gamification were found. The interest in gamification was determined by the PA goal. Participants’ requirements for features included feedback and suggestions for activities. Monetary incentives were reported as relevant gamification aspects. Conclusion: Inactive people can be reached by outdoor activities, interventions to increase an active lifestyle, fitness and health sports. The study highlighted the interest in specific app features and gamification to increase PA in inactive people through an app.

Beschreibung: To optimize the mechanical performance of fused deposition modelling (FDM) fabricated parts, it is necessary to evaluate the influence of process parameters on the resulting mechanical performance. The main focus of the study was to characterize the influence of the initial process parameters on the mechanical performance of thermoplastic polyurethane under a quasi-static and high strain rate (~2500 s−1). The effects of infill percentage, layer height, and raster orientation on the mechanical properties of an FDM-fabricated part were evaluated. At a quasi-static rate of loading, layer height was found to be the most significant factor (36.5% enhancement in tensile strength). As the layer height of the sample increased from 0.1 to 0.4 mm, the resulting tensile strength sample was decreased by 36.5%. At a high-strain rate of loading, infill percentage was found to be the most critical factor influencing the mechanical strength of the sample (12.4% enhancement of compressive strength at 100% as compared to 80% infill). Furthermore, statistical analysis revealed the presence of significant interactions between the input parameters. Finally, using an artificial neural networking approach, we evaluated a regression model that related the process parameters (input factors) to the resulting strength of the samples.

Beschreibung: In urban planning and transportation management, the centrality characteristics of urban streets are vital measures to consider. Centrality can help in understanding the structural properties of dense traffic networks that affect both human life and activity in cities. Many cities classify urban streets to provide stakeholders with a group of street guidelines for possible new rehabilitation such as sidewalks, curbs, and setbacks. Transportation research always considers street networks as a connection between different urban areas. The street functionality classification defines the role of each element of the urban street network (USN). Some potential factors such as land use mix, accessible service, design goal, and administrators’ policies can affect the movement pattern of urban travelers. In this study, nine centrality measures are used to classify the urban roads in four cities evaluating the structural importance of street segments. In our work, a Stacked Denoising Autoencoder (SDAE) predicts a street’s functionality, then logistic regression is used as a classifier. Our proposed classifier can differentiate between four different classes adopted from the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDT): principal arterial road, minor arterial road, collector road, and local road. The SDAE-based model showed that regular grid configurations with repeated patterns are more influential in forming the functionality of road networks compared to those with less regularity in their spatial structure.

Beschreibung: The complex failure mechanisms of glass laminates under in-plane loading conditions is modelled within the framework of phase-field strategy. Laminated glass is widely used for structural purposes due to its safe post-glass-breakage response. In fact, the combination of several glass plies bonded together with polymeric interlayers allows overcoming the brittleness of the glass and to reach a pseudo-ductile response. Moreover, the post-breakage behaviour of the laminate is strictly correlated by the mechanical properties of the constituents. Ruptures may appear as cracks within the layers or delamination of the bonding interface. The global response of a glass laminate, validated against experimental results taken from the literature, is carried out by investigating a simplified layup of two glass plies connected by cohesive interfaces through an interlayer. Delamination of the adhesive interface is described, and crack patterns within the materials are fully described. Finally, the proposed approach put the basis for future comparisons with results of experimental campaign and real-life applications.

Beschreibung: This study investigates the robustness of the physically-based hydrological model WaSiM (water balance and flow simulation model) for simulating hydrological processes in two data sparse small-scale inland valley catchments (Bankandi-Loffing and Mebar) in Burkina Faso. An intensive instrumentation with two weather stations, three rain recorders, 43 piezometers, and one soil moisture station was part of the general effort to reduce the scarcity of hydrological data in West Africa. The data allowed us to successfully parameterize, calibrate (2014–2015), and validate (2016) WaSiM for the Bankandi-Loffing catchment. Good model performance concerning discharge in the calibration period (R2 = 0.91, NSE = 0.88, and KGE = 0.82) and validation period (R2 = 0.82, NSE = 0.77, and KGE = 0.57) was obtained. The soil moisture (R2 = 0.7, NSE = 0.7, and KGE = 0.8) and the groundwater table (R2 = 0.3, NSE = 0.2, and KGE = 0.5) were well simulated, although not explicitly calibrated. The spatial transposability of the model parameters from the Bankandi-Loffing model was investigated by applying the best parameter-set to the Mebar catchment without any recalibration. This resulted in good model performance in 2014–2015 (R2 = 0.93, NSE = 0.92, and KGE = 0.84) and in 2016 (R2 = 0.65, NSE = 0.64, and KGE = 0.59). This suggests that the parameter-set achieved in this study can be useful for modeling ungauged inland valley catchments in the region. The water balance shows that evaporation is more important than transpiration (76% and 24%, respectively, of evapotranspiration losses) and the surface flow is very sensitive to the observed high interannual variability of rainfall. Interflow dominates the uplands, but base flow is the major component of stream flow in inland valleys. This study provides useful information for the better management of soil and scarce water resources for smallholder farming in the area.

Beschreibung: The frequency and intensity of flood quantiles and its attendant damage in agricultural establishments have generated a lot of issues in Ethiopia. Moreover, precise estimates of flood quantiles are needed for efficient design of hydraulic structures; however, quantification of these quantiles in data-scarce regions has been a continuing challenge in hydrologic design. Flood frequency analysis is thus essential to reduce possible flood damage by investigating the most suitable flood prediction model. The annual maximum discharges from six representative stations in the Upper Blue Nile River Basin were fitted to the commonly used nine statistical distributions. This study also assessed the performance evolution of the probability distributions with varying spatial scales, such that three different spatial scales of small-, medium-, and large-scale basins in the Blue Nile River Basin were considered. The performances of the candidate probability distributions were assessed using three goodness-of-fit test statistics, root mean square error, and graphical interpretation approaches to investigate the robust probability distribution for flood frequency analysis over different basin spatial scales. Based on the overall analyses, the generalized extreme value distribution was proven to be a robust model for flood frequency analysis in the study region. The generalized extreme value distribution significantly improved the performance of the flood prediction over different spatial scales. The generalized extreme value flood prediction performance improvement measured in root mean square error varied between 5.84 and 67.91% over other commonly used probability distribution models. Thus, the flood frequency analysis using the generalized extreme value distribution could be essential for the efficient planning and design of hydraulic structures in the Blue Nile River Basin. Furthermore, this study suggests that, in the future, significant efforts should be put to conduct similar flood frequency analyses over the other major river basins of Ethiopia.

Beschreibung: The size of the fracture process zone (FPZ) has significance for studying the fracture mechanism and fracture characteristics of concrete. This paper presents the method of assessing the FPZ of Mixed-Mode I-II for quasi-static four-point shearing concrete beams with pre-notched by Lagrangian strain profiles from digital image correlation (DIC). Additionally, it explores the influences of volume rates of the coarse aggregate of 0%, 28%, 48%, and 68%, and the specific surface areas of 0.12 m2/kg, 0.15 m2/kg, and 0.26 m2/kg on the size of the FPZ. It shows that the size of FPZ in four-point shearing concrete beam can be characterized by the displacement field and strain field using DIC. The size of FPZ conforms to linear positive correlation with the volume rate of coarse aggregate, and linear negative correlation with the specific surface area of coarse aggregate. It presents that the crack initiation of the four-point shearing beam with the pre notch is dominated by mode I load, and the propagation and fracture of Mixed-Mode I-II cracks are caused by the combined effect of Mode I and Mode II loading.

Beschreibung: The structural, mechanical, and electronic properties, as well as stability, elastic anisotropy and effective mass of AlN/GaN/InN in the Pmn21 phase were determined using density functional theory (DFT). The phonon dispersion spectra and elastic constants certify the dynamic and mechanical stability at ambient pressure, and the relative enthalpies were lower than those of most proposed III-nitride polymorphs. The mechanical properties reveal that Pmn21-AlN and Pmn21-GaN possess a high Vickers hardness of 16.3 GPa and 12.8 GPa. Pmn21-AlN, Pmn21-GaN and Pmn21-InN are all direct semiconductor materials within the HSE06 hybrid functional, and their calculated energy band gaps are 5.17 eV, 2.77 eV and 0.47 eV, respectively. The calculated direct energy band gaps and mechanical properties of AlN/GaN/InN in the Pmn21 phase reveal that these three polymorphs may possess great potential for industrial applications in the future.

Beschreibung: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been isolated from a variety of tissues using different methods. Active research have confirmed that the most accessible site to collect them is the adipose tissue; which has a significantly higher concentration of MSCs. Moreover; harvesting from adipose tissue is less invasive; there are no ethical limitations and a lower risk of severe complications. These adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) are also able to increase at higher rates and showing telomerase activity, which acts by maintaining the DNA stability during cell divisions. Adipose-derived stem cells secret molecules that show important function in other cells vitality and mechanisms associated with the immune system, central nervous system, the heart and several muscles. They release cytokines involved in pro/anti-inflammatory, angiogenic and hematopoietic processes. Adipose-derived stem cells also have immunosuppressive properties and have been reported to be “immune privileged” since they show negative or low expression of human leukocyte antigens. Translational medicine and basic research projects can take advantage of bioprinting. This technology allows precise control for both scaffolds and cells. The properties of cell adhesion, migration, maturation, proliferation, mimicry of cell microenvironment, and differentiation should be promoted by the printed biomaterial used in tissue engineering. Self-renewal and potency are presented by MSCs, which implies in an open-source for 3D bioprinting and regenerative medicine. Considering these features and necessities, ASCs can be applied in the designing of tissue engineering products. Understanding the heterogeneity of ASCs and optimizing their properties can contribute to making the best therapeutic use of these cells and opening new paths to make tissue engineering even more useful.

Beschreibung: In this paper, interactions of double parallel cracks were studied by performing experiments and numerical simulations. Fatigue crack propagation tests were carried out to measure crack growth rates in the specimens with double parallel cracks or a single crack. Finite element method was adopted to calculate stress intensity factors at the crack tips. Results show that the double parallel cracks at different positions present a shielding effect or enhancement effect on crack growth rates and stress intensity factors. When the double parallel cracks are offset, crack interactions mostly behave as enhancement effects. Empirical formulas were obtained to calculate the stress intensity factor at the “dangerous” crack tip of the double parallel cracks. By modifying the material parameters in Paris equation of the single crack, the double parallel cracks are simplified into a single crack with the same crack growth rates.
