    Abstract: This book highlights processes, impacts and management practices of bamboo expansion occurring in areas where it is distributed around the world. Although not conceptually plant invasions, bamboo expansion has been considered an “invasion” based on its characteristics and the impacts it caused on adjacent ecosystems it expanded into, including altered element cycling, transformed soil microbial community compositions, decreased biodiversity, fluctuated primary productions, etc. However, the processes and impacts during or after complete expansion and the underlying mechanisms of successful expansion, are still unclear. The ecological effects of bamboo expansion are not given full consideration and are not thoroughly understood. Based on the latest studies, this book synthesizes research progress of bamboo expansion effects on the soil abiotic environment, soil microbial community compositions, plant characteristics, ecosystem biodiversity, element cycling process, and ecological effects of primary management practice, etc. This book will provide a thorough understanding of ecological changes following bamboo expansions, benefit the effective control of expanding bamboo with respect to decreased biodiversity and mitigation of global change, and accurate prediction and evaluation of bamboo expansion impacts currently and in the future occur around the world. This book presents critical points that need further investigation based on the latest findings, which will be helpful for ecological researchers, policymakers, forestry workers, or graduate and PhD students. .

    Notes: The laser shocking to the Al2O3 ceramics was proceeded, and the fracture microphologythat formed from the strong laser shock processing (LSP) was analyzed by the Scanning electronmicroscopy (SEM). It was discovered that the feature of ceramics responds differently when thelaser energy was changed. The brittle fracture that consists of intergranular fracture and cleavagefracture was the main mode under high energy laser shocking (laser pulse enegry: 42J); themacroscopical fracture characteristic was the radial crack. When the laser energy reduced to a fitlevel (25J), the brittle fracture of ceramics appears to the characteristic of plastic deformation, itsfracture microphology appears lots of slippage lines, and the macroscopical feature of radial crackunder 42J become subulate crack. While the energy reduced to 15J, the Al2O3 ceramics did notfracture, its micro-hardness ascended, a feature of micro-plastic deformation was existed under thelow energy. The reason of the brittle materials appears to the feature of plastic deformation wasanalyzed

    Notes: Abstract An improved time domain polyreference method for global modal identification is presented in this paper. A time domain preprocessing technique is developed to reduce the effects of random noise contamination on measured data. Compared with the polyreference complex exponential technique, the size of the estimation problem is considerably reduced and the judgment on the required computational order is made easier and more reliable in the low signal-to-noise ratio cases. A total least squares algorithm with singular value decomposition for parameter estimation is adopted to minimize the bias error. A better procedure for residue calculation is proposed, which takes residual terms into account in time domain.

    Notes: Plague, caused by Y ersinia pestis, is one of the most dangerous diseases that impressed a horror onto human consciousness that persists to this day. Cases of plague can be normally controlled by timely antibiotic administration. Streptomycin is the first-line antibiotic for plague treatment. In this study, a DNA microarray was used to investigate the changes in the gene expression profile of Y. pestis upon exposure to streptomycin. A total of 345 genes were identified to be differentially regulated, 144 of which were up-regulated, and 201 down-regulated. Streptomycin-induced transcriptional changes occurred in genes responsible for heat shock response, drug/analogue sensitivity, biosynthesis of the branched-chain amino acids, chemotaxis and mobility and broad regulatory functions. A wide set of genes involved in energy metabolism, biosynthesis of small macromolecules, synthesis and modification of macromoclecules and degradation of small and macro molecules were among those down-regulated. The results reveal general changes in gene expression that are consistent with known mechanisms of action of streptomycin and many new genes that are likely to play important roles in the response to streptomycin treatment, providing useful candidates for investigating the specific mechanisms of streptomycin action.

    Notes: Immunofluorescence microscopy was used to visualize the FtsZ band that marks the site of septation in Sporosarcina ureae. Image analysis indicated that the vegetative division was symmetrically located with respect to the ends of the cells. Fusions of lacZ to the sporulation loci, spoIIA and cotE, of Bacillus subtilis were introduced into S. ureae by mobilization of plasmids containing the fusions from Escherichia coli. The fusions showed similar patterns of sporulation-associated expression in S. ureae to those observed in B. subtilis. Formation of β-galactosidase encoded by the spoIIA–lacZ fusion made it possible to identify early sporulating cells by immunofluorescence microscopy. Analysis of the position of FtsZ bands in cells expressing spoIIA–lacZ indicated that the location of sporulation division was symmetrical with respect to the ends of the cells, in sharp contrast to the asymmetrical location of septation in sporulating Bacilli. It is inferred that asymmetry of location of the sporulation division is not essential for the compartmentalization of gene expression that follows the division.

    Notes: ZnO buffer layers have been used in the hydride vapor phase epitaxy of GaN in order to improve the initial nucleation and growth of the GaN and hence the subsequent materials properties. The specific role of the ZnO buffer layer was investigated by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction. The improvements in the GaN growth behavior are attributed to the formation of a thin surface layer of ZnAl2O4 that results from a reaction-diffusion process between the ZnO and Al2O3. This layer can provide an improved lattice match to GaN as well as change in surface energy affecting the initial growth of the GaN. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
