    Description: Transient solutions were obtained for a square region of heat conducting semitransparent material cooling by thermal radiation. The region is in a vacuum environment, so energy is dissipated only by radiation from within the medium leaving through its boundaries. The effect of heat conduction during the transient is to partially equalize the internal temperature distribution. As the optical thickness of the region is increased, the temperature gradients increase near the boundaries and corners, unless heat conduction is large. The solution procedure must provide accurate temperature distributions in these regions to prevent error in the calculated radiation losses. Two-dimensional numerical Gaussian integration is used to obtain the local radiative source term. A finite difference procedure with variable space and time increments is used to solve the transient energy equation. Variable spacing was used to concentrate grid points in regions with large temperature gradients.

    Description: In the present paper, direct numerical methods by which to simulate the spatially developing free shear flows in the transitional region are described and the numerical results of a spatially developing plane wake are presented. The incompressible time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations were solved using Pade finite difference approximations in the streamwise direction, a mapped pseudospectral Fourier method in the cross-stream direction, and a third-order compact Runge-Kutta scheme for time advancement. The unstable modes of the Orr-Sommerfeld equations were used to perturb the inlet of the wake. Statistical analyses were performed and some numerical results were compared with experimental measurements. When only the fundamental mode is forced, the energy spectra show amplification of the fundamental and its higher harmonics. In this case, unperturbed alternate vortices develop in the saturation region of the wake. The phase jitter around the fundamental frequency plays a critical role in generating vortices of random shape and spacing. Large- and small-scale distortions of the fundamental structure are observed. Pairing of vortices of the same sign is observed, as well as vortex coupling of vortices of the opposite sign.

    Description: A novel modeling technique is developed and applied to the long-wavelength gravity, topography, and internal density structure of Venus. The focus of this study is to employ data on the gravity and topography of Venus, which are obtained from the Pioneer Venus Orbiter mission, to enhance understanding some key aspects of the internal structure of the planet. A modeling strategy utilizing 'stokeslets' or basic units of slow viscous flow (governed by the Stokes equations) to duplicate the observed gravity and topography is implemented.

    Description: The growth and development of a horseshoe vortex system in an incompressible, three-dimensional turbulent junction flow were investigated experimentally. A streamlined cylinder mounted with its axis normal to a flat surface was used to generate the junction vortex flow. The flow environment was characterized by a body Reynolds number of 183,000, based on the leading edge diameter of the streamlined cylinder. The study included surface flow visualizations, surface pressure measurements, and mean flow measurements of total pressure, static pressure, and velocity distributions in three planes around the base of the streamlined cylinder, and in two planes in the wake flow. Some characterizations of vortex properties based on the measured mean cross-flow velocity components are presented. The results show the presence of a single large, dominant vortex, with strong evidence of a very small corner vortex in the junction between the cylinder and the flat surface. The center of the dominant vortex drifts away from both the body and the flat surface as the flow develops along and downstream of the body. The growth and development of the core of the large, dominant vortex are documented.

    Description: The nonlinear resonant-triad interaction, proposed by Raetz (1959), Craik (1971), and others for a Blasius boundary layer, is analyzed here for an adverse-pressure-gradient boundary layer. We assume that the adverse pressure gradient is in some sense weak and, therefore, that the instability growth rate is small. This ensures that there is a well-defined critical layer located somewhere within the flow and that the nonlinear interaction is effectively confined to that layer. The initial interaction is of the parametric resonance type, even when the modal amplitudes are all of the same order. This means that the oblique instability waves exhibit faster than exponential growth and that the growth rate of the two-dimensional mode remains linear. However, the interaction and the resulting growth rates become fully coupled, once oblique-mode amplitudes become sufficiently large, but the coupling terms are now quartic, rather than quadratic as in the Craik (1971) analysis. More importantly, however, new nonlinear interactions, which were not present in the Craik-type analyses, now come into play. These interactions eventually have a dominant effect on the instability wave development.

    Description: Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) focusing can be achieved either based on accurate ephemeris data or on an autofocusing process. For the Magellan project, such a decision must be made in the early phase of Magellan SAR system design. The analysis of the emphemeris requirement is complicated. The analysis given by the author leads to the conclusion that empheris data obtained from the Magellan navigation system provide sufficient accuracy to meet the Magellan image resolution requirement.

    Description: Direct numerical simulations were made to examine the local structure of the reaction zone for a moderately fast reaction between unmixed species in decaying, homogeneous turbulence and in a homogeneous turbulent shear flow. Pseudospectral techniques were used in domains of 64 exp 3 and higher wavenumbers. A finite-rate, single step reaction between non-premixed reactants was considered, and in one case temperature-dependent Arrhenius kinetics was assumed. Locally intense reaction rates that tend to persist throughout the simulations occur in locations where the reactant concentration gradients are large and are amplified by the local rate of strain. The reaction zones are more organized in the case of a uniform mean shear than in isotropic turbulence, and regions of intense reaction rate appear to be associated with vortex structures such as horseshoe vortices and fingers seen in mixing layers. Concentration gradients tend to align with the direction of the most compressive principal strain rate, more so in the isotropic case.

    Description: The Magellan prime mission involves mapping the planet of Venus once around its rotational axis. The Magellan synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data processing facility processes all SAR data collected by the Magellan spacecraft into image data on an orbit-by-orbit basis. About 1700 million bits of radar data were collected. A complete description of the Magellan SAR Data Processing Facility is provided with emphasis on key design features of the data processors that satisfied the project data processing requirements. A summary of the attained data processing performance is included, as well as a brief discussion of some of the constraints and considerations regarding the applicability of the processors to meeting the data processing goals anticipated for the follow-on mission phases (i.e., cycles II, III, and beyond).

    Description: The effects of convection on diffusive-convective physical vapor transport process are examined computationally. We analyze conditions ranging from typical laboratory conditions to conditions achievable only in a low gravity environment. This corresponds to thermal Rayleigh numbers Ra(T) ranging from 1.80 to 1.92 x 10 exp 6. Our results indicate that the effect of the sublimation and condensation fluxes at the boundaries is 10 increase the threshold of instability. For typical ground based conditions time dependent oscillatory convection can occur. This results in nonuniform temperature and concentration gradients at the crystal interface. Spectral analysis of the flow field shows regions of both periodic and quasi-periodic states. Low gravity conditions can effectively reduce convective effects, thus resulting in uniform temperature and concentration gradients at the interface, a desirable condition for crystal growth.

    Description: The difficulties connected with conventional maps of Phobos and Deimos are largely overcome by producing maps in digital forms, i.e., by projecting Viking Orbiter images onto a global topographic model made from collections of radii derived by photogrammetry. The resulting digital mosaics are then formatted as arrays of body-centered latitudes, longitudes, radii, and brightness values of Viking Orbiter images. The Phobos mapping described was done with Viking Orbiter data. Significant new coverage was obtained by the Soviet Phobos mission. The mapping of Deimos is in progress, using the techniques developed for Phobos.

    Description: Physical and chemical weathering processes that might be important on Mars are reviewed, and the limited observations, including relevant Viking results and laboratory simulations, are summarized. Physical weathering may have included rock splitting through growth of ice, salt or secondary silicate crystals in voids. Chemical weathering probably involved reactions of minerals with water, oxygen, and carbon dioxide, although predicted products vary sensitively with the abundance and physical form postulated for the water. On the basis of kinetics data for hydration of rock glass on earth, the fate of weathering-rind formation on glass-bearing Martian volcanic rocks is tentatively estimated to have been on the order of 0.1 to 4.5 cm/Gyr; lower rates would be expected for crystalline rocks.

    Description: This review of the long-term dynamical behavior of Mars covers secular variations of the orbit, oscillations of the obliquity, and polar wandering. Calculations of the large-scale obliquity oscillations of Mars are updated using the most recent orbit theory and contrasted with the earth. The motion for Mars is characterized by about 100,000-yr oscillations driven by differential spin axis and orbit plane precession rates during which the obliquity may change by as much as about 20 deg. The possible role of spin-orbit secular resonances to the spin axis histories of the earth and Mars is also considered. Numerical integrations of the equations of motion indicate that Mars may have passed through resonance as little as 5 Myr ago and that obliquities approaching about 45 deg could have been achieved during such an event.

    Description: Deformation of the Martian lithosphere and the various theoretical formulations used to model its behavior on local, regional, and global scales are studied. An overview of the various classes of tectonic features found on Mars is presented. The tectonic record on Mars, which provides the basic framework for interpreting theoretical thermomechanical models in terms of major tectonic events and provinces is summarized. The thickness of the elastic lithosphere is estimated using its response to local surface loads, and significant spatial variability is found, with values ranging from 20 to 300 km. A comparison of the major radial graben systems with theoretical stress models shows that more than one mechanism of lithospheric deformation is required to produce its enormous extent.

    Description: The paper summarizes the fundamental gravity field constants for Mars and a brief historical review of early determinations and current-day accurate estimates. These include the planetary gravitational constant, global figure, dynamical oblateness, mean density, and rotational period. Topographic results from data acquired from the 1967 opposition to the most recent, 1988, opposition are presented. Both global and selected local topographic variations and features are discussed. The inertia tensor and the nonhydrostatic component of Mars are examined in detail. The dimensionless moment of inertia about the rotational axis is 0.4 for a body of uniform density and 0.37621 if Mars were in hydrostatic equilibrium. By comparing models of both gravity and topography, inferences are made about the degree and depth of compensation in the interior and stresses in the lithosphere.

    Description: Soviet and American spacecraft exploration of Mars over the past quarter century is reviewed. Data on the earliest Soviet attempts to send spacecraft to observe the planet are presented. Of the series of spacecraft that were announced (designated Mars 1 to Mars 7), none fulfilled all its scientific goals, but some good photographs and other important data were obtained. Of the six spacecraft in the Mariner series, two failed, but Mariner 4 first revealed the cratered surface of Mars, and Mariner 9 discovered all the major geologic features. The Viking mission, with its two Orbiters, two Landers, and its 6-yr duration, surpassed in quantity and variety of data all other missions combined. The Phobos mission ended in two failures, but the second of the two spacecraft acquired significant new data about Mars and Phobos. An appendix listing special issues of journals containing collections of papers about Mars is provided.

    Description: Telescopic observations of Mars, from those of Galileo in 1610 to the late 19th century, were summarized by Flammarion (1892, 1909). Major compilations of knowledge of Mars were produced by Antoniadi (1930) and de Vaucouleurs (1954). Polar cap composition was debated until the discovery by the Viking mission that the north and south perennial polar caps are composed of different materials. Spacecraft data indicate a rich and diverse geologic history as well as many unsolved puzzles. An annotated list of books about Mars is provided.     Description: An upwind-biased, point-implicit relaxation algorithm for obtaining the numerical solution to the governing equations for 3D, viscous, hypersonic flows in chemical and thermal nonequilibrium is described. The algorithm is derived using a finite-volume formulation in which the inviscid components of flux across cell walls are described with a modified Roe's averaging and Harten's entropy fix with second-order corrections based on Yee's symmetric total variation diminishing scheme. Newton relaxation of the fully coupled equation set is employed on a cell-to-cell basis. Under-relaxation of the inviscid and over-relaxation of the viscous contributions to the residual are implemented. Computational work is easily partitioned among many processors in an asynchronous, dynamic mode for convergence acceleration. An overview of the physical models employed herein for thermochemical nonequilibrium is included. Several test cases and comparisons with experimental data are presented involving hypersonic flow over blunt bodies which illustrate the qualitative and quantitative capabilities of this approach.

    Description: Radio emission is frequently produced at twice the electron plasma frequency 2fp in the foreshock region upstream of the terrestrial bow shock. Observations of this emission provide a remote diagnostic of solar wind parameters in the foreshock. Using ISEE-3 radio data, we present the first evidence that the radio intensity is proportional to the kinetic energy flux and to other parameters correlated with solar wind density. We provide a qualitative explanation of this intensity behavior and predict the detection of similar emission at Jupiter by the Ulysses spacecraft.

    Description: Attention is given to an empirical model for transition to turbulence in oscillatory flows in straight tubes. Designed after a correlation for transition of a boundary layer on a flat plate, the model yields the laminar flow momentum thickness Reynolds number that must be met before transition to turbulence will occur. The transition point is located by comparing this to the actual momentum thickness Reynolds number. A scheme is proposed for estimating the momentum thickness Reynolds number in terms of the position within the cycle, the maximum value of the diameter Reynolds within the cycle, Re(max), and the dimensionless frequency, Valensi number. Results from an experimental study of oscillatory flow in a tube are employed to develop the model. When the flow is determined to be turbulent, it is proposed that a fully-developed, steady flow friction coefficient be applied. When the flow is laminar, the assumption of fully developed flow cannot be made; thus, a method is suggested for estimating the friction factor.

    Description: The paper examines evidence that the Martian climate undergoes quasi-periodic variations, including the polar layered terrain, differences between the residual polar caps, and the current net southward flow of H2O. The driving functions for these variations are oscillations in the elements of the Martian orbit coupled with precession of the Martian spin axis. These 'astronomic variations' control the distribution of the insolation, which in turn influences the partition of volatiles between atmospheric and surface reservoirs. The major effects anticipated at low obliquity are growth of the polar caps, substantial decrease in surface pressure, cessation of duststorms, release of CO2 from the regolith, and poleward migration of H2O ground ice. At high obliquity, the mass of the perennial polar caps decreases and permanent CO2 frost disappears, CO2 desorbs from the regolith at high latitudes, the surface pressure may increase to several times its current value, and the atmospheric dust load increases.

    Description: Radar studies of Mars have provided measurements of surface texture on scales of centimeters to hundreds of meters and measurements of surface material properties. Texture (rms surface tilts and estimates of small-scale roughness) may be inferred from dispersion and/or polarization of the radar echo; material properties (reflectivity of dielectric constant) are derived from echo strength. Mars is a diverse target; depending on location, rms surface tilts have been found to vary over the range 0.25 to 10 deg while reflectivity covers at least 3 to 13 percent. Plains units are the most variable, having both the smoothest and roughest surfaces, cratered terrain can be considered predictable and 'average' by comparison. Recent data identify scattering by small structures (perhaps rocks on or near the surface) as playing a more important role than previously recognized. Scattering by the residual ice cap near Mars' south pole is particularly unusual. The present state of radar surface studies is summarized.

    Description: This paper presents a 2D axisymmetric combined conduction and radiation model of a multizone crystal growth furnace. The model is based on a programmable multizone furnace (PMZF) designed and built at NASA Lewis Research Center for growing high quality semiconductor crystals. A novel feature of this model is a control algorithm which automatically adjusts the power in any number of independently controlled heaters to establish the desired crystal temperatures in the furnace model. The control algorithm eliminates the need for numerous trial and error runs previously required to obtain the same results. The finite element code, FIDAP, used to develop the furnace model, was modified to directly incorporate the control algorithm. This algorithm, which presently uses PID control, and the associated heat transfer model are briefly discussed. Together, they have been used to predict the heater power distributions for a variety of furnace configurations and desired temperature profiles. Examples are included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the PID controlled model in establishing isothermal, Bridgman, and other complicated temperature profies in the sample. Finally, an example is given to show how the algorithm can be used to change the desired profile with time according to a prescribed temperature-time evolution.

    Description: The cooling arrangement of the Space Shuttle Main Engine High Pressure Oxidizer Turbopump (HPOTP) incorporates two jet rings, each of which produces 19 high-velocity coolant jets. At some operating conditions, the frequency of excitation associated with the 19 jets coincides with the natural frequency of the turbine blades, contributing to fatigue cracking of blade shanks. In this paper, an alternate turbine disk cooling arrangement, applicable to disk faces of zero hub radius, is evaluated, which consists of a single coolant jet impinging at the center of the turbine disk. Results of the CFD analysis show that replacing the jet ring with a single central coolant jet in the HPOTP leads to an acceptable thermal environment at the disk rim. Based on the predictions of flow and temperature fields for operating conditions, the single central jet cooling system was recommended for implementation into the development program of the Technology Test Bed Engine at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center.

    Description: The Magellan synthetic aperture radar (SAR) produces Venus surface images from data collected by the SAR carried on board the Magellan spacecraft. The core of the primary Magellan SAR processor is the digital correlator subsystem (DCS). The pipeline DSC architecture enables the Magellan primary SAR processor (PSP) to achieve real-time data processing capability. The implementation and performance of the DSC are described. Hardware (H/W) constraints that influenced the processing algorithm design are highlighted.

    Description: The Magellan (MGN) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) processing radiometric compensation algorithm is described, and the effective pointing error caused by the terrain is examined. It is shown how the range centroid can be computed from spacecraft ancillary data with an accurate topographic model. In cases where such data are not available, a technique is presented to estimate the range centroid from the coherent radar echoes. This technique is demonstrated using MGN SAR data.

    Description: The suitability of the acetate replication method for monitoring the growth of small cracks is discussed. Applications of this technique are shown for cracks growing at the notch root in semicircular-edge-notch specimens of a variety of aluminum alloys and one steel. The calculated crack growth rate versus Delta K relationship for small cracks was compared to that for large cracks obtained from middle-crack-tension specimens. The primary advantage of this techinque is that it provides an opportunity, at the completion of the test, to go backward in time towards the crack initiation event and 'zoom in' on areas of interest on the specimen surface with a resolution of about 0.1 micron. The primary disadvantage is the inability to automate the process. Also, for some materials, the replication process may alter the crack-tip chemistry or plastic zone, thereby affecting crack growth rates.

    Description: A random-code technique has been used at Arecibo to obtain delay-Doppler radar images of the full disk of Mercury. Anomalously bright features were found at the north and south poles. The north polar feature is oblong (4 by 8 deg) and offset from the pole. The smaller south polar feature is mostly confined to the floor of the crater Chao Meng-Fu. The polar locations and radar properties of these features indicate that they may be produced by volume scattering in ice. The images also reveal a variety of more subdued reflectivity features ranging in size from hundreds to thousands of kilometers; some of these appear to have an impact origin.

    Description: A design trade study of the SP-100 heat rejection subsystem (HRSS) was made. A system code was used to evaluate the sensitivity of the HRSS mass and performance to changes. Variations in heat pipe diameter and cross-section, fin length and thickness, armor thickness, and overall configuration and materials were evaluated. The analysis indicates that the minimum system mass occurs for the case with many small diameter heat pipes, with ducting that maximizes the fraction of the heat pipe evaporator perimeter in contact with it.

    Description: The accumulated knowledge on the chemistry and mineralogy of Martian surface materials is reviewed. Pertinent information obtained by direct analyses of the soil on Mars by the Viking Landers, by remote sensing of Mars from flyby and orbiting spacecraft, by telescopic observations from earth, and through detailed analyses of the SNC meteorites presumed to be Martian rocks are summarized and analyzed. A compositional model for Mars soil, giving selected average elemental concentrations of major and trace elements, is suggested. It is proposed that the fine surface materials on Mars are a multicomponent mixture of weathered and nonweathered minerals. Smectite clays, silicate mineraloids similar to palagonite, and scapolite are suggested as possible major candidate components among the weathered minerals.

    Description: The stability of stratified plane Couette flow in a rotating frame is investigated for a case in which the gravitational force is parallel to the rotation vector. Partial differential equations describing the behavior of disturbances in the linear regime are derived. Unstratified flow is stable as long as the angular momentum gradient is positive. If the gradient is negative, nonaxisymmetric disturbances grow as a power law in time, if the gradient is sufficiently steep. In flow which is unstable to convection, all perturbations asymptotically grow at the rate given by the Brunt-Vaisala frequency. If heat diffusion is included, all nonaxisymmetric perturbations now eventually decay as t exp -2, even if the flow is unstable to convection. If heat diffusion and viscosity are weak, nonaxisymmetric disturbances in convectively unstable flow will undergo a large transient growth before their eventual decay.

    Description: Results are presented from an analysis of core samples obtained from different depths of the Chico (New Mexico) L6 chondrite for various cosmogenic nuclides (Be-10, Al-26, and stable isotopes of He, Ne, and Ar). The relationships between the measured abundances of cosmogenic nuclides and cosmogenic Ne-22/Ne-21 ratio were compared with predictions of recent semiempirical models of Graf et al. (1990) and Reedy (1991), and it was found that both models closely reproduce the observed trends and absolute values of the data obtained. Noble gas data indicate that Chico experienced shielding similar to that of Jilin and greater than those of the Knyahinya or the Keyes chondrites. The exposure history for Chico is discussed.

    Description: Results are presented from the analyses of small ballistically dispersed melt samples (occurring in the form of aerodynamically shaped spheres, dumbbells, and teardrops) from the Wabar Crater (Saudi Arabia) and of melts from the Wabar and Nejed meteorites. On the basis of the data obtained and of models for crater forming processes it is concluded that the ballistically-dispersed glasses were formed from material at shallow levels in the target zone where temperatures were higher and where intimate physical contact with the disrupting impactor was achieved. Siderophile element fractionation was completed early, while the impactor was undergoing decompression and prior to mixing with the target glasses.

    Description: We describe an approximate Riemann solver for the computation of hypervelocity flows in which there are strong shocks and viscous interactions. The scheme has three stages, the first of which computes the intermediate states assuming isentropic waves. A second stage, based on the strong shock relations, may then be invoked if the pressure jump across either wave is large. The third stage interpolates the interface state from the two initial states and the intermediate states. The solver is used as part of a finite-volume code and is demonstrated on two test cases. The first is a high Mach number flow over a sphere while the second is a flow over a flow over a slender cone with an adiabatic boundary layer. In both cases the solver performs well.

    Description: The cloud-level atmosphere of Venus takes little more than four days to complete one rotation, whereas the solid planet below has a 243-day period. Computer simulations of the circulation of the Venus middle atmosphere between 40 and 85 kilometers, as driven by solar radiation absorbed in the clouds, reproduce (1) the observed cloud-level rotation rate, (2) strong vertical shears above and below the cloud tops, and (3) midlatitude jets and strong poleward flow on the day side. Simulated circulations converge to yield nearly the same zonal winds when initialized with both stronger or weaker rotation rates. These results support the hypothesis that the observed cloud-top rotation rate is maintained by statistical balance between fluxes of momentum by thermal tides and momentum advection by mean meridional circulation.

    Description: Results are presented of the planetary radio astronomy observations conducted on board Voyager 2, with emphasis placed on the characteristics of the strong (3 to 6 dB) modulations of the broadband smooth Uranian radio emissions recorded from January 27-30, 1986, when the spacecraft was outbound from Uranus. The modulations were characterized by two superposed periods of about 100 sec and about 10 sec. It is suggested that the long-period modulation is due to the magnetopause surface waves, while the short-period modulations are due to the signature of ion cyclotron turbulence above the proton gyrofrequency, related to the magnetopause boundary layer.

    Description: A compositionally based classification scheme for chondrules is proposed that will help in systematizing the wealth of data available and disentangling the effects of nebular and subsequent processes. The classification is not by texture or the composition of a single phase, or a mixture of these two, but rather is a comprehensive, systematic approach which uses the composition of the two main chondrule components. This scheme is applicable to over 95 percent of the chondrules and is easily applied using an electron microprobe. It stresses the original diversity of the chondrules and the complex yet facile way in which they respond to parent-body metamorphism. Results using this classification scheme suggest that arguments against an important role of chondrules in determining the compositional trends of the chondrites have been premature.

    Description: The cooling requirements for an average car sized engine (spark-ignition, V-6, four-stroke, naturally aspirated, about 200 kg, about 100 kW) were looked at for Mars. Several modes of cooling were considered, including forced convection, exhaust, radiation and closed loop systems. The primary goal was to determine the effect of the thinner Martian atmosphere on the cooling system. The results show that there was only a 6-percent difference in the cooling requirements. This difference was due mostly to the thinner atmosphere during forced convection and the heat capacity of the exhaust. A method using a single pass counter-flow heat exchanger is suggested to offset this difference in cooling requirements.

    Description: Space-time correlations were used to study compressibility effects on large structures in mixing layers. Two high-Reynolds number mixing layers with M(c) = 0.51 (case 1) and 0.86 (case 2) were studied. The results indicate that the structures in case 1 are similar to those in the incompressible case, but less organized. The structures in case 2 are highly three-dimensional, with a good spatial but a poor temporal orgnization. The streamwise correlations showed a decay rate four to five times greater for case 2 relative to case 1. While the spanwise correlations for case 1 showed trends similar to incompressible mixing layers, the behavior of case 2 was very different. The pressure fluctuations in the fully developed region of case 2 displayed significant rms variation in the spanwise direction with a well-defined pattern. Based on these measurements, the structures in case 2 seem to be of a horseshoe type, transversely spanning the mixing layer with the head in the low-speed side and the legs inclined in both the x-y and the x-z planes.

    Description: A two-dimensional nonlinear evolution equation is studied which describes the three-dimensional spatiotemporal behavior of the air-liquid interface of a thin liquid film lying on the underside of a cooled horizontal plate. It is shown that the equation has a Liapunov functional, and this fact is exploited to demonstrate that the Marangoni effect can stabilize the destabilizing effect of gravity (the Rayleigh-Taylor instability), allowing for the existence of stable localized axisymmetric solutions for a wide range of parameter values. Various properties of these structures are discussed.

    Description: A least-squares finite element method, based on the velocity-pressure-vorticity formulation, is developed for solving steady incompressible Navier-Stokes problems. This method leads to a minimization problem rather than to a saddle-point problem by the classic mixed method and can thus accommodate equal-order interpolations. This method has no parameter to tune. The associated algebraic system is symmetric, and positive definite. Numerical results for the cavity flow at Reynolds number up to 10,000 and the backward-facing step flow at Reynolds number up to 900 are presented.

    Description: The Ulysses URAP experiment has detected Jovian radio emissions in the VLF range at distances from Jupiter in excess of 1.5 AU. The URAP observations represent the first synoptic observations of Jupiter in the VLF band, from 3 to 30 kHz. In this band lie the low-frequency extent of the bKOM emission, the escaping continuum emission, and the Jovian type IIIs. Initial results indicate that the continuum varies in frequency with the solar wind ram pressure at Jupiter, whereas, the Jovian type IIIs appear to be controlled to some extent by the planetary rotation, often appearing when system III longitude 100 deg faces the spacecraft.

    Description: A method is proposed for detecting Jovian global oscillations using IR heterodyne measurements in the lower stratosphere of the planet. Measurements of the S(0) and S(1) lines over a period of a few nights permitted the detection of modes with periods of 5 to 20 min and of Doppler shifts corresponding to velocities as low as 1 m/sec (which is less than the value reported by Schmider and Mosser, 1990 from observations of the Jovian troposphere in the visible range.     Description: Magalhaes and Borucki (1991) reported that Voyager-2 images of Jupiter contained bright spots due to lightning activity that was confined to two narrow altitude bands centered at 49 deg N and 13.5 deg N latitude and to a single region near 60 deg N latitude. This paper describes the Voyager 2 imaging observations in detail and associates the positions of the lightning features in the images with particular cloud features. The energetics of the lightning storms on Jupiter is examined. It is found that the ratio of the energy dissipated by Jovian lightning to the thermal flux available to drive convection motions is about 3 decades larger than the terrestrial ratio.

    Description: Four of the SNC meteorites of putative Martian origin are falls. Two of these fell on October 3: Chassigny in 1815 and Zagami in 1962. The probability of this coincidence arising from random fall days is approximately 1 in 60. If this coincidence is not the result of chance, it suggests that some of the SNC meteorites are derived from a meteoroid stream. In that Chassigny and Zagami span nearly the full range of SNC lithologies and histories, the coincidence of fall days is consistent with suggestions that all of the SNCs came from a single site (impact crater) on their parent planet.

    Description: A subsonic and a supersonic problem are respectively treated by an upwind line-relaxation algorithm for the Navier-Stokes equations using inner iterations to accelerate steady-state solution convergence and thereby minimize CPU time. While the ability of the inner iterative procedure to mimic the quadratic convergence of the direct solver method is attested to in both test problems, some of the nonquadratic inner iterative results are noted to have been more efficient than the quadratic. In the more successful, supersonic test case, inner iteration required only about 65 percent of the line-relaxation method-entailed CPU time.

    Description: The current distribution of atmospheres among Ganymede, Titan, and Callisto are presently accounted for by a process of competition between impact erosion and impact-furnished supply of atmosphile-laden late veneers. Titan's lower impact velocities have allowed it to accommodate an atmosphere, while Callisto and Ganymede remain barren. The model applied entails that the threshold impact velocity for atmospheric cratering by icy impactors be in the 10-14 km/sec range, consistent with the implications of the Schmidt and Housen (1987) crater-energy scaling for nonporous targets.

    Description: The Unified Radio and Plasma Wave (URAP) experiment has produced new observations of the Jupiter environment, owing to the unique capabilities of the instrument and the traversal of high Jovian latitudes. Broad-band continuum radio emission from Jupiter and in situ plasma waves have proved valuable in delineating the magnetospheric boundaries. Simultaneous measurements of electric and magnetic wave fields have yielded new evidence of whistler-mode radiation within the magnetosphere. Observations of auroral-like hiss provided evidence of a Jovian cusp. The source direction and polarization capabilities of URAP have demonstrated that the outer region of the Io plasma torus supported at least five separate radio sources that reoccurred during successive rotations with a measurable corotation lag. Thermal noise measurements of the Io torus densities yielded values in the densest portion that are similar to models suggested on the basis of Voyager observations of 13 years ago. The URAP measurements also suggest complex beaming and polarization characteristics of Jovian radio components. In addition, a new class of kilometer-wavelength striated Jovian bursts has been observed.

    Description: Submicrometer- to micrometer-sized particles were recorded by the Ulysses dust detector within 40 days of the Jupiter flyby. Nine impacts were recorded within 50 Jupiter radii with most of them recorded after closest approach. Three of these impacts are consistent with particles on prograde orbits around Jupiter and the rest are believed to have resulted from gravitationally focused interplanetary dust. From the ratio of the impact rate before the Jupiter flyby to the impact rate after the Jupiter flyby it is concluded that interplanetary dust particles at the distance of Jupiter move on mostly retrograde orbits. On 10 March 1992, Ulysses passed through an intense dust stream. The dust detector recorded 126 impacts within 26 hours. The stream particles were moving on highly inclined and apparently hyperbolic orbits with perihelion distances of greater than 5 astronomical units. Interplanetary dust is lost rather quickly from the solar system through collisions and other mechanisms and must be almost continuously replenished to maintain observed abundances. Dust flux measurements, therefore, give evidence of the recent rates of production from sources such as comets, asteroids, and moons, as well as the possible presence of interstellar grains.

    Description: Two distinct renormalization-group (RG) approaches are applied to Navier-Stokes turbulence: epsilon-RG and recursive RG. Epsilon-RG takes into account only nonlocal interactions and utilizes an infinitesimal subgrid (unresolvable scale) shell limit. Recursive RG takes into account both nonlocal and local interactions and does not require an infinitesimal subgrid shell limit to be taken. The role of local interactions and the introduction of RG-induced nonlinearities are discussed and clarified.

    Description: Start-up and subsequent operation of a low-temperature heat pipe requires the liquid phase of the operating fluid to be continuously pumped back to the evaporator by the capillary action of the wick. If the pipe has been in an environment where ambient temperatures are below the freezing point of the working fluid prior to start-up, the frozen fluid in the condenser and adiabatic region scan prevent initial flow to the evaporator, causing dryout of the evaporator before all of the working fluid is in the liquid phase. This paper examines the time-dependent wall and vapor temperature profiles along the axial length of a low-temperature heat pipe during start-up from the frozen state, and freeze-out during a normal operation by applying a subfreezing temperature fluid through the condenser. In addition, the experimental transient frozen start-up wall temperature profile is compared with a two-dimensional numerical phase-change model. A successful start-up method using a pulsed power input is presented.

    Description: Results from direct numerical simulations are presented to show that the weakly nonlinear results of Daudpota et al. (1988) are in error with respect to the influence of the Tollmien-Schlichting wave on the Dean vortex. The results of a new weakly nonlinear theory are then presented, and it is shown that the new results are consistent with the direct numerical simulations.

    Description: Empirical formulas are fitted to existing theoretical absorption spectra of H2-H2 pairs in the far-infrared allowing the inclusion of dimer absorption, parameterized with the height dependence of the para-hydrogen profile, in the calculations. Comparison between synthetic and Voyager IRIS spectra shows that once the dimer absorption is included it is now possible to reproduce the hydrogen portion of the IRIS spectrum to within the precision of the measurements.

    Description: During the Ulysses inbound cruise to Jupiter the Unified Radio and Plasma Wave (URAP) experiment observed a variety of the planet's radio components in the frequency range below 1 MHz. Most of these emissions were already detected by the Voyager Radio Astronomy and Plasma Wave experiments, however, with much less sensitivity and different spectral coverage. These different radio components within the URAP dynamic spectra are identified, and their appearance with the previous Voyager observations are compared.

    Description: The source crater of the youngest and largest of the tektite strewnfields, the Australasian strewnfield, has not been located. A number of lines of evidence indicate that the Muong Nong-type tektites, primarily found in Indochina, are more primitive than the much more abundant and widespread splash-form tektites, and are proximal to the source. In this study the spatial distribution of Muong Nong-type tektite sites and chemical character have been used to indicate the approximate location of the source. The variation of Muong Nong-type tektite chemical composition appears to be caused by mixing of two silicate rock end-members and a small amount of limestone, and not by vapor fractionation. The variation in composition is not random, and does not support in situ melting or multiple impact theories. The distribution of both Muong Nong and splash-form tektite sites suggest the source is in a limited area near the southern part of the Thailand-Laos border.

    Description: This paper confirms and extends the results of Szabo et al. (1991) (which demonstrated some similarities of the Neptune's polar cusp region to the earth's cusp), but uses a different approach requiring plasma and vector magnetic field quantities. In addition, various MHD properties of the cusp-magnetopause boundary, which separates the cusp from the magnetosheath allowing thermal anisotropy, are obtained, including the magnetopause (MP) normal, mass, and normal momentum flux, the boundary speed (and thickness), and their relationships. Results demonstrate that the MP velocity is composed of two components: a propagation speed and the other component consistent with the rotational motion of the magnetosphere.

    Description: Thermal mechanisms active in Titan's atmosphere are discussed in a brief review of data obtained during the Voyager I flyby in 1980. Particular attention is given to the greenhouse effect (GHE) produced by atmospheric H2, N2, and CH4; this GHE is stronger than that on earth, with CH4 and H2 playing roles similar to those of H2O and CO2 on earth. Also active on Titan is an antigreenhouse effect, in which dark-brown and orange organic aerosols block incoming solar light while allowing IR radiation from the Titan surface to escape. The combination of GHE and anti-GHE leads to a surface temperature about 12 C higher than it would be if Titan had no atmosphere.

    Description: Problems associated with the numerical computation of highly nonlinear equations in computational fluid dynamics are set forth and analyzed in terms of the potential ranges of spurious behaviors. A reaction-convection equation with a nonlinear source term is employed to evaluate the effects related to spatial and temporal discretizations. The discretization of the source term is described according to several methods, and the various techniques are shown to have a significant effect on the stability of the spurious solutions. Traditional linearized stability analyses cannot provide the level of confidence required for accurate fluid dynamics computations, and the incorporation of nonlinear analysis is proposed. Nonlinear analysis based on nonlinear dynamical systems complements the conventional linear approach and is valuable in the analysis of hypersonic aerodynamics and combustion phenomena.

    Description: Improved values for the masses of the Uranian system and the satellites Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, Oberon, and Miranda are obtained on the basis of an analysis of the Doppler-tracking data and star-satellite imaging from the Voyager 2 spacecraft combined with earth-based astrometric satellite observations. Masses are expressed as the product, the universal gravitational constant times the mass of the body, in units of (cu km/sq s). The satellite masses are (4.4 +/- 0.5) for Miranda, (90.3 +/- 8.0) for Ariel, (78.2 +/- 9.0) for Umbriel, (235.3 +/- 6.0) for Titania, and (201.1 +/- 5.0) for Oberon. Quoted errors are standard errors and are the present assessment of the true rather than the formal errors. The Uranus rotational pole orientation angles and gravity harmonic coefficients were fixed at the values determined by French et al. (1988) from stellar occultations of the Uranian rings observed from both the earth and Voyager 2 and from the occultation of the spacecraft radio signal.

    Description: A stereo examination was conducted for clusters in three-dimensional proper element space within a sample of both numbered and faint Palomar-Leiden Survey (PLS) asteroids. The clusters were then objectively filtered for small Poisson probability of chance occurrence; 104 were accepted as families with 4- to 12-member populations, and are interpreted as impact-generated. Structure is common in the well-populated families: the better-sampled families are accordingly discussed in terms of their geometry and taxonomy. Some families are very rich in faint PLS members.

    Description: Using a theoretical analysis of fundamental equations and a numerical simulation of the flow field, the statistically homogeneous motion that is generated by buoyancy forces after the creation of homogeneous random fluctuations in the density of infinite fluid at an initial instant is examined. It is shown that analytical results together with numerical results provide a comprehensive description of the 'birth, life, and death' of buoyancy-generated turbulence. Results of numerical simulations yielded the mean-square density mean-square velocity fluctuations and the associated spectra as functions of time for various initial conditions, and the time required for the mean-square density fluctuation to fall to a specified small value was estimated.

    Description: There is a weak positive feedback mechanism between the astronomy and meteorology of Mars. The mechanism is this: the seasonal waxing and waning polar caps cause small changes in Mars' dynamical flattening. Because the changes in flattening are out of phase with the sun, there is a net annual solar torque on the planet which increases the angle between the equatorial and orbital phanes. On the basis of Viking observations of the present climate and simple atmospheric models of past climates, these seasonal shifts of mass between the atmosphere and polar caps are capable of secularly increasing Mars' obliquity by about 1 or 2 deg since the origin of the solar system. Thus, the climate, driven largely by the axial tilt, reacts back on the planet and slightly enhances the seasons on Mars as time progresses. More sophisticated models will probably not change this result much; therefore this mechanism probably produced only minor changes in Mars' climate. It causes negligible changes in the axial tilt and climate of the earth.

    Description: Multispectral images of the lunar western limb and far side obtained from Galileo reveal the compositional nature of several prominent lunar features and provide new information on lunar evolution. The data reveal that the ejecta from the Orientale impact basin (900 kilometers in diameter) lying outside the Cordillera Mountains was excavated from the crust, not the mantle, and covers pre-Orientale terrain that consisted of both highland materials and relatively large expanses of ancient mare basalts. The inside of the far side South Pole-Aitken basin (greater than 2000 kilometers in diameter) has low albedo, red color, and a relatively high abundance of iron- and magnesium-rich materials. These features suggest that the impact may have penetrated into the deep crust or lunar mantle or that the basin contains ancient mare basalts that were later covered by highlands ejecta.

    Description: The applicability of a multigrid technique to block-structured, body-fitted meshes is examined focusing on three different strategies. In the first strategy data are exchanged between blocks in each stage of a five-stage Runge-Kutta time-stepping scheme which keeps a possible time lag between blocks to a minimum, but requires a large amount of I/O operations and storage. The second strategy is based on performing a complete Runge-Kutta cycle within a block before switching to the next. In the third strategy both a complete Runge-Kutta cycle and the residual evaluation for the restriction operator are done within a block, allowing a minimum of I/O and storage. The inviscid flow around a wing-body/engine-pylon configuration was computed on a mesh consisting of 11 computational blocks. It was found that both the first and the second strategies delivered converged results, but the third failed due to larger time lag between blocks.

    Description: We have obtained minimum age estimates for the sand units underlying the two largest meteorite deflation surfaces in Roosevelt County, New Mexico, USA, using thermoluminescence dating techniques. The dates obtained ranged from 53.5 (+/- 5.4) to 95.2 (+/- 9.5) ka, and must be considered lower limits for the terrestrial ages of the meteorites found within these specific deflation surfaces. These ages greatly exceed previous measurements from adjacent meteorite-producing deflation basins. We find that Roosevelt County meteorites are probably terrestrial contemporaries of the meteorites found at most accumulation zones in Antarctica. The apparent high meteorite accumulation rate reported for Roosevelt County by Zolensky et al. (1990) is incorrect, as it used an age of 16 ka for all Roosevelt County recovery surfaces. We conclude that the extreme variability of terrestrial ages of the Roosevelt County deflation surfaces effectively precludes their use for calculations of the meteorite accumulation rate at the Earth's surface.

    Description: The Ulysses magnetic field measurements confirmed the general structure of the dayside magnetosphere and showed that the importance of the current sheet dynamics extends well into the middle and outer magnetosphere. On the dusk side, the magnetic field was found to be swept back significantly toward the magnetotail. It is pointed out that the external current densities need to be modified with respect to previous observations on the inbound pass which shows that Jovian magnetic and magnetospheric models are highly sensitive to both the intensity and the structure assumed for the current sheet. Data obtained revealed that all boundaries and boundary layers in the magnetosphere have a very complex microstructure.

    Description: Theoretical treatment is given to the possibility of the existence of propagating confined states in the nonlinear phase equation by generalizing stationary confined states. The nonlinear phase equation is set forth for the case of propagating patterns with long wavelengths and low-frequency modulation. A large range of parameter values is shown to exist for propagating confined states which have spatially localized regions which travel on a background with unique wavelengths. The theoretical phenomena are shown to correspond to such physical systems as spirals in Taylor instabilities, traveling waves in convective systems, and slot-convection phenomena for binary fluid mixtures.

    Description: An implicit finite volume lower-upper time-marching method which efficiently solves the complete Navier-Stokes and specied equations in a fully coupled fashion is the basis of the present 3D numerical program for simulating the supersonic reacting flows of H2 in air. The chemistry model incorporated has nine species and 18 reaction steps. Calculations are presented for flowfields of underexpanded hydrogen jets that are transversely injected into the supersonic airstream within scramjet combustors; the shock structure, separated flow regions around the injector, and combustion-product distributions are clearly represented.

    Description: A finite-difference solution for steady natural convective flow in a concentric spherical annulus with isothermal walls has been obtained. The stream function-vorticity formulation of the equations of motion for the unsteady axisymmetric flow is used; interest lying in the final steady solution. Forward differences are used for the time derivatives and second-order central differences for the space derivatives. The alternating direction implicit method is used for solution of the discretization equations. Local one-dimensional grid adaptation is used to resolve the steep gradients in some regions of the flow at large Rayleigh numbers. The break-up into multi-cellular flow is found at high Rayleigh numbers for air and water, and at significantly low Rayleigh numbers for liquid metals. Excellent agreement with previous experimental and numerical data is obtained.

    Description: The paper describes a new operatorial approach to the study of turbulence, based on the general algebraic properties of the filtered representations of a turbulence field at different levels. The main results of this analysis is the averaging invariance of the filtered Navier-Stokes eaquations in terms of the generalized central moments, and an algebraic identity that relates the turbulent stresses at different levels. The resolved turbulence is defined, the algebraic consistency rules that relate these resolved quantities to the turbulent stresses at different levels are derived, and their possible uses in subgrid modeling is discussed.

    Description: The Wilcox (1988, 1991) k-omega model for eddy-viscosity turbulence does not require damping functions in the viscous sublayer, and its equations are less stiff near the wall. It has been designed to predict the requisite wake length in equilibrium, adverse pressure-gradient boundary-layer flows. When applied to free shear layers, however, a strong dependency of its results on the freestream value of omega has been noted. This feature is presently investigated via the self-similar equations for incompressible equilibrium boundary layers.

    Description: The Yakhot and Orszag (1986) renormalization group (RNG) theory of turbulence has generated a number of scaling law constants in reasonable quantitative agreement with experiments. The theory itself is highly mathematical, and its assumptions and approximations are not easily appreciated. The present paper reviews the RNG theory and recasts it in more conventional terms using a distinctly different viewpoint. A new formulation based on an alternative interpretation of the origin of the random force is presented, showing that the artificially introduced epsilon in the original theory is an adjustable parameter, thus offering a plausible explanation for the remarkable record of quantitative success of the so-called epsilon-expansion procedure.

    Description: A modeling effort is presented for the nature of the stratospheric haze on Titan, under several simplifying assumptions; chief among these is that the aerosols in question are of a single composition, and involatile. It is further assumed that a one-dimensional model is capable of simulating the general characteristics of the aerosol. It is suggested in this light that the detached haze on Titan may be a manifestation of organized, Hadley-type motions above 300 km altitude, with vertical velocities of 1 cm/sec. The hemispherical asymmetry of the visible albedo may be due to organized vertical motions within the upper 150-200 km of the haze.

    Description: The equations determining the linear growth rate omega characterizing a convectively unstable fluid with Rayleigh number R(u) bounded below by an impenetrable free boundary and above by a convectively stable fluid with Rayleigh number R(s), are solved numerically. Using the analytical Rayleigh-Benard growth rate omega (RB) as a convenient functional form, it is possible to fit the numerical values for omega if the vertical wave number k(z) = n(pi) and the Rayleigh number R(RB) are taken to be functions of R(s), R(u), and the horizontal wave number k-perpendicular rather than n = integer as in the Rayleigh-Benard case. In addition, contrary to Rayleigh-Benard convection, in which the critical Rayleigh number is fixed, it is found that R super (cr) sub u is variable in the presence of a stable layer, (i.e., it depends on R(s)).

    Description: Some measures of the intrinsic complexity of the near wall turbulence are reviewed. The number of modes required in an 'optimal' eigenfunction expansion is compared with the dimension obtained from the calculation of Liapunov exponents. These measures are of the same order, but they are very large. It is argued that the basic building block element of the near wall turbulence can be isolated in a small region of space (minimal flow unit). When the size of the domain is taken into account, the dimension becomes more manageable.

    Description: The dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy in incompressible turbulence is investigated using a two-scale DIA. The dissipation rate is shown to consist of two parts; one corresponds to the dissipation rate used in the current turbulence models of eddy-viscosity type, and another comes from the viscous effect that is closely connected with mean velocity shear. This result can elucidate the physical meaning of the dissipation rate used in the current turbulence models and explain part of the discrepancy in the near-wall dissipation rates between the current turbulence models and direct numerical simulation of the Navier-Stokes equation.

    Description: The author is developing a new type of turbulence model in which a new one-point quantity, the eddy structure tensor, carries information about the two-point structure of the turbulence. The model was motivated by the observation that conventional one-point turbulence models based only on the turbulent stresses do not predict the rapid changes in state that are found when anisotropic homogeneous turbulence is subjected to mean rotation, and hence are fundamentally incorrect for rotation. The model appears to give topologically correct predictions for the changes in stress state and structure state under all types of rapid distortions of homogeneous turbulence.

    Description: In developing turbulence models, various model constraints were proposed in an attempt to make the model equations more general (or universal). The most recent of these are the realizability principle, the linearity principle, the rapid distortion theory, and the material indifference principle. Several issues are discussed concerning these principles and special attention is payed to the realizability principle. Realizability (defined as the requirement of non-negative energy and Schwarz' inequality between any fluctuating quantities) is the basic physical and mathematical principle that any modeled equation should obey. Hence, it is the most universal, important and also the minimal requirement for a model equation to prevent it from producing unphysical results. The principle of realizability is described in detail, the realizability conditions are derived for various turbulence models, and the model forms are proposed for the pressure correlation terms in the second moment equations. Detailed comparisons of various turbulence models with experiments and direct numerical simulations are presented. As a special case of turbulence, the two dimensional two-component turbulence modeling is also discussed.

    Description: The epsilon-budget was computed from the direct simulation data (DNS) of Kim (1990) for developed channel flow at Re(tau) = 395. The relative magnitude of the terms in the epsilon-equation is shown with the aid of scaling arguments, and the parameter governing this magnitude is established. The modeling of the terms in the equation is then addressed in the context of eddy-viscosity k-epsilon models. Some existing models for the sum of all source and sink terms in the epsilon-equation are tested against DNS data, and an improved model is proposed on the basis of these data.

    Description: The various flow regimes that occur in rotating isotropic turbulence and their associated turbulence structure are studied. Direct numerical simulations are conducted for moderate and rapid rotation rates and comparisons are made with the predictions of generalized Eddy Damped Quasi-Normal Markovian (EDQNM) approximations. It is shown that at high rotation rates the nonlinear transfer terms remain small and that the development of the spectrum is through pure viscous decay. This shows that the effect of rapid rotation on the turbulence kinetic energy is through the shutting off of the production term in the dissipation rate equation. At moderate and relatively rapid rates, the rotation causes a discernible anisotropy to develop in the integral length scale with a mild trend toward a two-dimensionalization of the flow. As the flow decays, the Rossby number decreases, leading again to the shutting off of the nonlinear transfer terms. For extremely rapid rotation rates, the anisotropies in the integral length scales are small and direct numerical simulation results are in good agreement with rapid distortion theory.

    Description: A two-dimensional oscillating flow analysis was conducted simulating the gas flow inside Stirling engine heat exchangers. Both laminar and turbulent oscillating pipe flow were investigated numerically for Re(max) = 1920 (Va = 80), 10,800 (Va = 272), 19,300 (Va = 272), and 60,800 (Va = 126). The results are compared with experimental results of previous investigators. Predictions of the flow regime are also checked by comparing velocity amplitudes and phase difference with those from laminar theory and quasi-steady profile. A high Reynolds number k-epsilon turbulence model was used for turbulent oscillating pipe flow. Finally, the performance of the k-epsilon model was evaluated to explore the applicability of quasi-steady turbulent models to unsteady oscillating flow analysis.

    Description: The Neptune flyby in 1989 added a new planet to the known number of magnetized planets generating nonthermal radio emissions. We review the Neptunian radio emission morphology as observed by the planetary radio astronomy experiment on board Voyager 2 during a few weeks before and after closest approach. We present the characteristics of the two observed recurrent main components of the Neptunian kilometric radiation, i.e., the 'smooth' and the 'bursty' emissions, and we describe the many specific features of the radio spectrum during closest approach.

    Description: A numerical study is conducted to simulate the shock-induced combustion in premixed H2-air mixtures. Two types of bodies, blunt (spherical projectile) and sharp (wedge), are considered in the study. A nine-species, 18-step finite-rate H2-air chemical reaction mechanism coupled with the Navier-Stokes equations is solved. The flow field over the blunt body is found to be unsteady, when the projectile velocity is same as the Chapman-Jouget velocity of the mixture. The unsteadiness is caused by the periodic instabilities originating in the stagnation zone. Numerical results show good qualitative agreement with the ballistic range shadowgraph. In addition, the frequency of oscillations, determined by using the Fourier power spectrum, is found to be in good agreement with the experiment. The flow field over the wedge is found to be stable for the conditions considered in this study. The oblique detonation wave structure is investigated and the important flow features are discussed.

    Description: The barotropic, orographically-forced intraseasonal oscillations of the Martian atmosphere are presently analyzed by means of a single-layer shallow-water model. An oscillation with 85-Martian day mean period is noted in a time-series of the model global atmospheric angular momentum, and its robustness is verified. The oscillation has a standing zonal component whose centers of action are located upstream and downstream of salient orographic features. A resemblance arises between the oscillation's northern-hemisphere features and those of the terrestrial 40-day oscillation.

    Description: NASA-IRTF observations of Neptune's disk-averaged spectrum are presently used, in conjunction with a lower-resolution spectrum, to furnish a more reliable absolute intensity calibration of portions of Neptune's disk-averaged spectrum. The temperature profile adopted is consistent with the size and shape of the H2 J = 3-1 quadrupole feature detected in the emission. High-resolution measurements of (C-13C-12)H6 and (C-12)2H6 imply C-12/C-13 of 78 +/- 26; this is consistent with solar and telluric values.

    Description: An attempt is made to diagnose the annual-average mean meridional residual Jovian large-scale stratospheric circulation from observations of the temperature and reflected sunlight that reveal the morphology of the aerosol heating. The annual mean solar heating, total radiative flux divergence, mass stream function, and Eliassen-Palm flux divergence are shown. The stratospheric radiative flux divergence is dominated the high latitudes by aerosol absorption. Between the 270 and 100 mbar pressure levels, where there is no aerosol heating in the model, the structure of the circulation at low- to midlatitudes is governed by the meridional variation of infrared cooling in association with the variation of zonal mean temperatures observed by IRIS. The principal features of the vertical velocity profile found by Gierasch et al. (1986) are recovered in the present calculation.

    Description: The motion of small, monodisperse particles in fluid was studied in a horizontal, cylindrical container rotating about its axis. One instigation for the study was the common requirement for mixed-phase, chemical or biological reactors to maintain particles in suspension for extended periods. A cylindrical, rotating reactor can allow long-term particle suspension without particle collisions and resulting agglomeration. The purpose of this study was to verify parametric effects and optimize the time of particle suspension. The theoretical and experimental results were obtained for inert, constant-diameter particles of nearly neutral buoyancy. The centrifugal buoyancy and gravitation terms were both included in the equations of motion. Laser illumination, photography and computer imaging were used to measure experimental particle concentration.

    Description: The moon's surface, unlike the Earth's, displays a comparatively clear record of its past bombardment history for the last 3800 Myr, the time since active lunar tectonism under the massive premare bombardment ended. From Baldwin's (1987) tabulation of estimated ages for a representative sample of large lunar craters younger than 3800 Ma, six major cratering episodes can be discerned. These six bombardment episodes, which must have affected the Earth too, appear to match in time the six major episodes of orogenic tectonism on Earth, despite typical resolution errors of +/- 100 Myr and the great uncertainties of the two chronologies. Since more highly resolved events during the Cenozoic and Mesozoic Eras suggest the same correlation, it is possible that large impacts have influenced plate tectonics and other aspects of geologic history, perhaps by triggering flood basalt eruptions.
