Beschreibung: We evaluated the ability of constitutive and inducible defenses to protect trees and restrict herbivore reproduction across the endemic, incipient (i.e., transitory), and eruptive phases of a native bark beetle species. Host defenses were major constraints when mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins) populations were low, but inconsequential after stand-level densities surpassed a critical threshold. We annually examined all lodgepole pines (Pinus contorta Douglas var. latifolia) in six 12–18 ha stands for 3–6 years for beetle attack and establishment as beetle densities progressed through various population phases. We also assayed a suite of tree physiological and chemical attributes and related them to subsequent attacks during that year. Rapidly inducible defenses appeared more important than constitutive defenses, and total monoterpenes were more important than particular constituents. Trees that exude more resin and accumulate higher monoterpene concentrations in response to simulated attack largely escaped natural attacks when populations were low. In stands where beetles had reached incipient densities, these defenses were ineffective. Larger diameter trees had more pronounced defenses than smaller diameter trees. As populations increased, beetles selected increasingly larger, more resource-rich trees, despite their better defenses. When populations were too low for cooperative attack, beetles exploited trees weakened by lower-stem insects. Behavioral plasticity allows beetles to persist at endemic levels until conditions shift, after which positive feedbacks predominate.

Beschreibung: Forest disturbance history reconstructions in the eastern US commonly rely on the analysis of a single tree-ring series per individual. However, this method can result in an underrepresentation of radial growth releases and canopy disturbance events. We analyzed paired tree-ring series from 884 Quercus alba L. individuals to quantify discrepant patterns of intratree release frequency, magnitude, and initiation years. We also developed a model for Q. alba that accounts for this underrepresentation of releases. Of the 884 trees analyzed, 216 exhibited radial growth releases. Only 13 of these 216 trees recorded the same canopy disturbance events in both series. Through analysis of a single growth-ring series per tree, a minimum of 39 and a maximum of 241 releases could be detected from the trees in the data set. Of the total number of release events, 238 (85%) occurred only in one of the paired tree-ring series. For stand development studies requiring the frequency of canopy disturbance alone, a multiplicative factor of 1.72 can provide the information necessary without deviating from the standard practice in the eastern US of collecting and analyzing a single increment core per tree. Studies requiring spatially and temporally explicit information regarding disturbance should extract and analyze two or more tree-ring series per individual.

Beschreibung: The relative abundance of two codominant Mediterranean tree species, shade-tolerant Quercus ilex L. and shade-intolerant Pinus halepensis Mill., is inversely correlated along aridity gradients, but this pattern is not explained by seedling responses to water or light availability, suggesting that subsequent life history stages may explain forest composition. To test this hypothesis, we calibrated statistical models of sapling growth and height–diameter allometry as functions of light availability and climatic variation as well as models of sapling mortality as a function of growth history. Contrary to the expectation of a sun–shade growth trade-off, P. halepensis grew faster than Q. ilex saplings at both low and high light levels. Low precipitation and aridity suppressed sapling growth rates, but no evidence of a shade–drought growth trade-off was found either. Pinus halepensis sapling mortality was strongly growth dependent, exhibiting high mortality rates at low growth, but the mortality of Q. ilex saplings was not. Height–diameter allometric variation was higher in low- than in high-light environments and was more pronounced with respect to changes in light than climatic water. Our results suggest that interspecific differences in sapling mortality and plasticity, rather than growth, may control species distributions at the mesic end of the aridity gradient.

Beschreibung: Stand structure is a key attribute of forest ecosystems. Mixed-tree plantations are widely felt to be the appropriate option for providing a broad range of goods and environmental services and to reduce susceptibility to natural hazards. However, the debate continues whether mixed plantations can achieve greater financial return than monocultures can. In this study, mixed-species stands of conifers and hardwood species were analyzed in consideration of economically relevant factors. Growth performance and resistance to hazards and pests are widely noted in the literature and are of general economic interest. Thus meta-analyses of relevant studies were conducted to test the following hypotheses: (1) mixing tree species has no significant influence on growth performance or resistance against hazards and pests and, if refuted, (2) mixing tree species causes mainly negative effects on growth performance and resistance against hazards and pests. However, a positive impact of mixing tree species was proven for resistance against windthrow and pests. The meta-analysis on growth performance just as well indicates a positive effect of mixing tree species. Overall, these positive results underscore the need for a large number of additional studies to examine different silvicultural systems to develop optimal management prescriptions to benefit from positive interactions.

Beschreibung: Sampling with probability proportional to prediction (3P sampling) is useful where the variable of interest to a forest inventory is costly to measure and where there exists a cheaper to measure auxiliary variable, which correlates positively with the variable of interest. Two forms of 3P sampling, termed “classical” and “point-” 3P sampling, have received some use in forest inventory. However, both have limitations that have restricted their use mainly to estimation of tree stem wood volume for timber sales over small forest areas in North America. A more general form of 3P sampling, termed here “ordinary” 3P sampling, has been all but ignored to date. It has potential for use in inventory of a broad range of forest attributes, both floral and faunal and both commercial and environmental, across large or small forest areas. Using a common mathematical approach, the present work derives the estimators of the population mean for these three forms of 3P sampling. Their properties are compared with simple random sampling through Monte Carlo simulations based on two example forest populations. The work lays a basis from which 3P sampling might develop further and enjoy wider application in forest inventory than has been the case previously.

Beschreibung: Extreme climate events are frequently important factors associated with episodes of forest decline. A recent oak decline event and concurrent outbreak of a native wood-boring beetle, the red oak borer ( Enaphalodes rufulus (Haldeman)), occurred throughout Arkansas Ozark and Ouachita Mountains. To investigate the role of drought and stand maturity on northern red oak ( Quercus rubra L.) decline, we analyzed tree-ring growth patterns and their relationships to climate from 815 live and 161 recently dead Q. rubra. While younger Q. rubra exhibited faster growth rates and stronger climate relationships than older Q. rubra, some individuals within all stands that originated 〉60 years ago were susceptible to growth decline or mortality. A significant growth interaction occurred among the three age classes identified where currently healthy Q. rubra were initially growing at slower decadal rates than currently declining or recently dead Q. rubra and later transitioned to higher growth rates than the others. These differences appear to be related to carbon allocation patterns towards rapid aboveground and (or) belowground growth early in development that led to later decline and (or) mortality. Decline in growth and weakening tree growth – climate relationships appeared to be initiated by an unusually severe and sustained drought in the early 1950s.

Beschreibung: The emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), is a devastating, invasive insect pest of ash trees, Fraxinus spp., in North America. Using a simulation model, we evaluated three potential management options to slow the spread of A. planipennis in discrete outlier sites: (i) removing ash trees to reduce available host phloem resource, (ii) girdling ash trees to attract ovipositing female beetles and destroying the trees before larvae complete development, and (iii) applying a highly effective systemic insecticide. Simulations indicate that systemic insecticide applications provided the greatest reduction in the radial spread of A. planipennis. In simulations in which management options were applied only within a 300 m radius from the origin of the infestation, insecticide applications reduced the radial spread by 30% and larval consumption of ash phloem by 40% beyond the treated area. In contrast, girdling ash trees reduced the radial spread by 15% and larval consumption of ash phloem by 20% beyond the treated area. Both of these management options significantly reduced the spread of A. planipennis when treatments were applied 1 to 4 years after infestations were initiated. Reducing ash phloem by removing ash trees decreased population size within treated areas but did not reduce the radial spread, population size, or larval consumption of ash phloem beyond treated areas.

Beschreibung: Modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR), and specific gravity (SG) are important properties for determining the end-use and value of a piece of lumber. This study addressed the variation in MOE, MOR, and SG with physiographic region, tree height, and wood type. Properties were measured from two static bending samples (dimensions 25.4 mm × 25.4 mm × 406.4 mm) representing each wood type (corewood and outerwood) at heights 2.4, 7.3, and 12.2 m from three trees sampled from 135 loblolly pine ( Pinus taeda L.) stands distributed across the natural range of the species. An analysis of variance was conducted to detect the effect of physiographpic region, height, and wood type on each property. Significant regional variation was observed for MOE, MOR, and SG for both wood types with high values in the Gulf and South Atlantic Coastal Plains compared with other regions. A significant height-related trend in MOE, MOR, and SG within a tree was identified; MOE and MOR increased in corewood and decreased in outerwood with height. Maps showing regional variation in MOE and MOR at different heights by wood type were produced and showed significant variation for both properties.

Beschreibung: Knowledge on the range of variability of montane European forests is hampered by limited data on the natural disturbance regime and by the small size of old-growth remnants. We studied the mixed Fagus – Abies – Picea Lom forest reserve (55.8 ha) in Bosnia and Herzegovina at three different scales: a grid of 40 sampling points to describe the structural characteristics and their range of variability, three transects to analyse gap size and gap fraction, and a 1.1 ha permanent plot to reconstruct age structure and disturbance history. The forest is characterized by a high volume of living trees (763 m3·ha–1 in the 55.8 ha core area and 1160 m3·ha–1 in the permanent plot) and of coarse woody debris (327 and 383 m3·ha–1, respectively). The percentages of forest area in canopy and expanded gaps are 19% and 41%, respectively. The median canopy gap size is 76.9 m2 and ranges from 11.1 to 708.0 m2. There are large (up to 120 cm diameter at breast height) and very old trees (441, 432, and 416 years for silver fir ( Abies alba Mill.), Norway spruce ( Picea abies (L.) Karst.), and European beech ( Fagus sylvatica L.), respectively). During the last three centuries, the disturbance patterns have been characterized by single-tree or small group mortality. In central Europe, this forest is at the end of a gradient from forests characterized by intermediate disturbances to those where very small-scale processes predominate.

Beschreibung: Models were built to relate site index to biophysical variables and stand structure for seven conifer species grown in plantation. Reduced models without stand structure were also derived to allow the prediction of site index even when information on the stand is unavailable. Biophysical variables tested were degree-days, aridity, summer precipitation, vapour pressure deficit, and soil water-holding capacity. The stand structure was accounted for using a Shannon evenness index of diameter at breast height distribution. Both full and reduced models had low to moderate R2 values and were slightly biased for most of the species. The results indicate that while correlations between phytometric and biophysical site indices are rather weak, those between plantation yield predicted using both indices and volume observed in the field are reasonably high (above 0.80). The biophysical site index models derived in this study could be used for strategic planning to estimate plantation yield or allowable cut for each of the seven conifer species.

Beschreibung: We investigated questions about the ability of broad silvicultural strategies to achieve multiple objectives (reduce disturbance losses, maintain the abundance of preferred species, mitigate fragmentation and loss of age-class diversity, and sequester aboveground carbon) under future climate conditions in Siberia. We conducted a factorial experiment using the LANDIS-II landscape disturbance and succession model. Treatments included varying the size and amount of areas cut and the cutting method (selective or clearcut). Simultaneously, the model simulated natural disturbances (fire, wind, insect outbreaks) and forest succession under projected future climate conditions as predicted by an ensemble of global circulation models. The cutting method and cutting rate treatments generally had a large effect on species and age-class composition, residual living biomass, and susceptibility to disturbance, whereas cutblock size had no effect. Cutblock size affected only measures of fragmentation, but cutting method and cutting rate often had an even greater effect. Based on the results, we simulated a “recommended” strategy and compared it with the current forest management practice. The recommended strategy resulted in greater forest biomass, increased abundance of favored species, and reduced fragmentation, but it did not significantly reduce losses by disturbance. No single strategy appears able to achieve all possible forest management objectives.

Beschreibung: A mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins) epidemic has caused widespread mortality of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud. var. latifolia Engelm.) trees across western North America,. We characterized the initial effects of beetle-induced mortality on forest structure and composition in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. In 2008, we surveyed stand structure and tree species composition across lodgepole pine dominated forests in the western portion of the Park. We defined five lodgepole pine forest types to describe variability in pre-epidemic forest conditions. This forested landscape appears to be resilient to the effects of the beetle. Surviving trees, including both canopy trees and saplings, were plentiful in most of the post-epidemic forests, even after accounting for anticipated future mortality. Subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa (Hook.) Nutt.), Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii Parry ex Engelm.), and aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) had modestly higher relative abundances after the epidemic. Lodgepole pine remained the dominant species on approximately 85% of the landscape. The impact of the outbreak on forest structure and composition varied considerably among the five forest types, suggesting that post-epidemic forest developmental trajectories will vary according to pre-outbreak stand characteristics. Active management efforts to regenerate lodgepole pine forests, e.g., tree planting, will likely not be necessary on this landscape.

Beschreibung: In several processes of the forest products industry, an in-depth knowledge of log and board internal features is required and their determination needs fast scanning systems. One of the possible technologies is X-ray computed tomography (CT) technology. Our paper reviews applications of this technology in wood density measurements, in wood moisture content monitoring, and in locating internal log features that include pith, sapwood, heartwood, knots, and other defects. Annual growth ring measurements are more problematic to be detected on CT images because of the low spatial resolution of the images used. For log feature identification, our review shows that the feed-forward back-propagation artificial neural network is the most efficient CT image processing method. There are also some studies attempting to reconstruct three-dimensional log or board images from two-dimensional CT images. Several industrial prototypes have been developed because medical CT scanners were shown to be inappropriate for the wood industry. Because of the high cost of X-ray CT scanner equipment, other types of inexpensive sensors should also be investigated, such as electric resistivity tomography and microwaves. It also appears that the best approach uses various different sensors, each of them having its own strengths and weaknesses.

Beschreibung: Because climate can affect xylem cell anatomy, series of intra-annual cell anatomical features have the potential to retrospectively supply seasonal climatic information. In this study, we explored the ability to extract information about water stress conditions from tracheid features of the Mediterranean conifer Juniperus thurifera L. Tracheidograms of four climatic years from two drought-sensitive sites in Spain were compared to evaluate whether it is possible to link intra-annual cell size patterns to seasonal climatic conditions. Results indicated site-specific anatomical adjustment such as smaller and thicker tracheids at the dryer site but also showed a strong climatic imprint on the intra-annual pattern of tracheid size. Site differences in cell size reflected expected structural adjustments against cavitation failures. Differences between intra-annual patterns, however, indicated a response to seasonal changes in water availability whereby cells formed under drought conditions were smaller and thicker, and vice versa. This relationship was more manifest and stable at the dryer site.

Beschreibung: Validation of predictive models in remote sensing requires a good coregistration of field and sensor data sets. However, previous research has demonstrated that Global Navigation Satellite System survey techniques often produce large positioning errors when applied to areas under forest canopies. In this article, we present a repeatable methodology for analyzing the effect of such errors when validating models that predict tree-height distributions from LiDAR data sets. The method is based on conditional probability theory applied to error positioning and includes an error assessment of the surveying technique. A technical criterion for selecting the plot radius that avoids significant effects of positioning errors was proposed. We demonstrated that for a plot radius greater than 10 m, the effects of positioning errors introduced by a phase-differential device were insignificant when studying forest tree-height distributions.

Beschreibung: It is fundamental for monitoring and assessment of national forest biomass to develop generalized single-tree biomass models suitable for large-scale forest biomass estimation. However, the compatibility of forest biomass estimates among different scales is a real problem. Based on the aboveground biomass data of Masson pine (Pinus massoniana Lamb.) in southern China, generalized single-tree biomass equations applying to national and regional forest biomass estimation were constructed using the dummy variable model method, which provided an effective approach to solving the compatibility of forest biomass estimates among different scales. The results show that aboveground biomass estimates of individual trees with the same diameter are different to some extent among the forest origins and geographic regions and that a dummy model with specific (local) parameters is better than a population-average model. The dummy variable model can be applied to develop other generalized compatible models such as tree volume equations.

Beschreibung: Burned forests represent high-quality habitats for many deadwood-dependent species. Yet, post-fire conditions may vary greatly within and among burns and thereby may affect habitat suitability for these species. We studied habitat selection of nesting black-backed woodpeckers ( Picoides arcticus Swainson) in recently burned spruce-dominated boreal forests. Our objectives were to (i) identify factors involved in snag selection for both nesting and foraging and (ii) examine selection of nest sites within the burned landscape. A total of 92 nests and 1612 foraging observations were used to investigate snag selection. Our results show that both pre-fire forest conditions and fire severity are important in determining the quality of burned forests for black-backed woodpeckers. This species selected large snags for both nesting (〉20 cm DBH) and foraging (〉15 cm DBH). Woodpeckers selected deciduous and degraded “pre-fire” snags for nesting whereas black spruce snags that had been created by fire and that were moderately burned were preferred for foraging. Nest sites were concentrated in burned mature stands and supported higher densities of large snags (e.g., 〉15 cm DBH). Our results suggest that burned forest patches of at least 20 ha and composed mainly of burned mature and old-growth forests should be maintained during post-fire harvesting. The decrease in the amount of late seral stands in managed forest landscapes raises concerns about the future availability of high-quality burned forests for this species.

Beschreibung: Tree regeneration at treeline is often inhibited by harsh climatic conditions and ecological constraints such as the presence of a continuous lichen cover. The objective of this study was to verify if recent climate warming and increased caribou (Rangifer tarandus L.) activity, which destroys the lichen cover, could act synergistically to increase black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) regeneration. We collected cones produced in 2006–2007 to compare seed viability with data from 1989 to 1995. We conducted experimental plantations (field and controlled conditions) to determine if germination and seedling emergence were higher in disturbed environments where mineral soil was exposed. We sampled naturally established seedlings to evaluate the relationship between the year of establishment and caribou activity and to compare growth in disturbed and undisturbed environments. We found that seed viability was significantly higher in 2006–2007 compared with 1989–1995. The number of germinated seeds per cone increased by a factor 〉1000. Germination and seedling establishment were higher in the disturbed environment (mineral soil). Finally, although seedling establishment in areas with continuous lichen cover was rather constant over the last 50 years, 73.5% of the seedlings recorded on bare mineral soil became established in the years following high caribou activity. Our results suggest that climate warming and caribou activity are likely to act synergistically to promote black spruce regeneration at treeline.

Gray genome sequence. Several fully sex-linked SSR markers were identified and mapped to a central position on the male P. tremuloides map of linkage group XIX. For the SSR markers tested here, the position on the assembled P. trichocarpa genome sequence is known, allowing sex-linked markers to be assigned to the central region of scaffold/chromosome 19 of P. trichocarpa. The sex linkage of the SSR markers was validated in other P. tremula × P. tremuloides crosses and also tested in Populus alba L. and Populus nigra L.

Beschreibung: Radiation is the main energy source for snowpack warming and melt in mountain needleleaf forests, and runoff from these forests is the main contributor to spring river flows in western North America. Utilizing extensive field observations, the effect of needleleaf forest cover on radiation and snowmelt timing was quantified at pine and spruce forest sites and nearby clearings of varying slope and aspect in an eastern Canadian Rocky Mountain headwater basin. Compared with open clearing sites, shortwave radiation was much reduced under forest cover, resulting in smaller differences in melt timing between forested slopes relative to open slopes with different aspects. In contrast, longwave radiation to snow was substantially enhanced under forest cover, especially at the dense spruce forest sites where longwave radiation dominated total energy for snowmelt. In both pine and spruce environments, forest cover acted to substantially reduce total radiation to snow and delay snowmelt timing on south-facing slopes while increasing total radiation and advancing snowmelt timing on north-facing slopes. Results strongly suggest that impacts on radiation to snow and snowmelt timing from changes in mountain forest cover will depend much on the slope and aspect at which changes occur.

Beschreibung: Effective tools must be developed that include consideration of biodiversity in the traditional forest planning process. The objective of this study is to present a spatial habitat suitability model that could be included in the optimization of long-term forest planning where the problem can be solved with an exact solution method. This could be an advantage, since, e.g., many forest planning systems available today are designed for problems that could be solved with an exact solution method. The habitat model consists of two parts: suitability assessment of stand-wise conditions and spatial conditions. To investigate whether the model works in a realistic setting, we used a case study and applied the model to the habitat demands for Hazel Grouse ( Bonasa bonasia L.). The results from the case study indicate that the model is effective for including spatial habitat consideration and that the model could be used for creating different degrees of the clustering of habitats. Further, the loss in net present value as a result of the spatial habitat demands was limited in the case study. We suggest that this modeling approach could be extended to other species with large area requirements and add to the existing tools for forest biodiversity assessment in forest management planning.

Beschreibung: Are the dynamics of natural subalpine spruce ( Picea abies (L.) Karst.) forests of central Europe governed by stand-replacing disturbances caused mostly by winds or by moderate disturbances resulting from bark beetle outbreaks? We analyzed tree-ring series from subalpine spruce forests in two mountain ranges of the Western Carpathians to determine the frequency and severity of disturbances and their effects on tree recruitment. The boundary-line method was employed to identify significant growth releases, interpreted as results of disturbances. In both study areas, major releases were not numerous but were regularly distributed over time. We found no evidence for stand-replacing disturbances. This result contrasts sharply with earlier findings from the Western Carpathians. The age structure of the forests studied indicates that the amount of tree recruitment was greater 150–200 years ago than in the subsequent 150 years. Our results suggest that stand dynamics in the forests analyzed are driven by numerous events of limited spatial extent and that stand-replacing disturbances are not necessary for the development of unimodal age structure.

Beschreibung: Forest tree ingrowth is a highly variable and largely stochastic process. Consequently, predicting occurrence, frequency, and composition of ingrowth is a challenging task but of great importance in long-term forest growth and yield model projections. However, ingrowth data often require different statistical techniques other than traditional Gaussian regression, because these data are often bounded, skewed, and non-normal and commonly contain a large fraction of zeros. This study presents a set of regression models based on discrete Poisson and negative binomial probability distributions for ingrowth data collected from permanent sample plots in the Acadian Forest Region of North America. Models considered here include regular Poisson, zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP), zero-altered Poisson (ZAP; hurdle Poisson), regular negative binomial (NB), zero-inflated negative binomial (ZINB), and zero-altered negative binomial (ZANB; hurdle NB). Plot-level random effects were incorporated into each of these models. The ZINB model with random effects was found to provide the best fit statistics for modeling annualized occurrence and frequency of ingrowth. The key explanatory variables were stand basal area per hectare, percentage of hardwood basal area, number of trees per hectare, a measure of site quality, and the minimum measured diameter at breast height of each plot. A similar model was developed to predict species composition. All models showed logical behavior despite the high variability observed in the original data.

Beschreibung: An infestation of Asian longhorned beetle (ALB) ( Anoplophora glabripennis (Motschulsky)) was detected in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 2008. The discovery of this pest, previously only seen in urban environments of North America, led to the unprecedented establishment of a 243 km2quarantine zone that included urban parks, neighborhoods, and natural forests. Because ALB behavior in forested stands is virtually unknown, two closed-canopied forested stands (Bovenzi and Delaval) infested with ALB within this zone were sampled during 2008–2010 to document stand conditions, assess ALB host selection, and determine ALB impact on tree growth. Thirty-two percent of the Acer sampled in Bovenzi were infested with ALB compared with 63% in Delaval. In Delaval where three maple host species were available, ALB was found more often in Acer rubrum L. than in Acer saccharum Marsh. or Acer platanoides L. Radial growth patterns did not differ between ALB-infested and uninfested Acer trees in Bovenzi. In contrast, ALB-infested trees in Delaval were significantly older and larger than uninfested trees and exhibited slower radial growth and ring width index patterns compared with uninfested trees. Results suggest that if left uncontrolled, ALB can readily disperse into natural forest landscapes and alter the makeup of North America’s hardwood forest region.

Beschreibung: The stilbenes pinosylvin (PS) and its monomethyl ether (PSM) provide natural decay resistance to Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris L.) heartwood timber. For growing trees, the inducible stilbene production serves as a defence against biotic and abiotic stresses. To improve the potential of reforestation material to produce stilbenes, we assessed the possibilities of selective harvesting from seed orchards. Half-sib progenies growing in a field trial and their grafted mothers in seed orchards were surveyed for several chemical and dimensional heartwood characteristics. The correlations between the clonal means of grafted mothers and the family means of their progenies were high for concentration of PS (r = 0.83, p = 0.000) and PSM (r = 0.60, p = 0.010) and for heartwood density (r = 0.72, p = 0.001). For these traits, the narrow-sense heritabilities (h2) estimated from the progeny trial and the broad-sense heritabilities (H2) in seed orchards were high as well. For the concentration of PS, both h2 (0.67) and H2 (0.81) showed the highest values of any trait. The selective collection of Scots pine seed from seed orchards is a promising way to obtain seedlings that possess genetic potential for active defence and to produce high-quality heartwood as mature trees.

Beschreibung: Tree basal area (ba) or diameter at breast height (dbh) are universally used to represent tree secondary growth in individual tree based growth models. However, the long-term implications of using either ba or dbh for predictions are rarely fully assessed. In this analysis, Δba and Δdbh increment equations were fit to identical datasets gathered from six conifer and four hardwood species grown in central Maine. The performance of Δba and Δdbh predictions from nonlinear mixed-effects models were then compared with observed growth measurements of up to 29 years via a Monte Carlo simulation. Two evaluation statistics indicated substantial improvement in forecasting dbh using Δdbh rather than Δba. Root mean squared error (RMSE) and percentage mean absolute deviation (MAD%) were reduced by 14% and 15% on average, respectively, across all projection length intervals (5–29 years) when Δdbh was used over Δba. Differences were especially noted as projection lengths increased. RMSE and MAD% were reduced by 24% when Δdbh was employed over Δba at longer projection lengths (up to 29 years). Simulations found that simulating random effects rather than using local estimates for random effects performed as well or better at longer interval lengths. These results highlight the implications that selecting a growth model dependent variable can have and the importance of incorporating model uncertainty into the growth projections of individual tree based models.

Beschreibung: Root and butt rot is the most destructive disease of conifers in the Northern Hemisphere, but little is known about the dynamics of yield loss in stands of different ages, site types, and species composition. This study aimed to estimate butt rot incidence, causal fungi, and related wood yield loss in Picea abies (L.) H. Karst. stands in Latvia. A total of 24 745 stumps were examined on 318 forest sites, and 21.8% of them contained rot. There was a positive correlation between stand age and butt rot frequency. Proportion of other tree species in a stand had no influence on incidence of the rot, but significant differences were observed among different forest site types. The length of decay columns in 114 stems analysed was 6.6 ± 2.6 m on average. Based on the observed butt rot frequencies in Latvian P. abies stands of different age classes, volumes of decay-degraded wood in a fully stocked stand would comprise about 19.7 m3·ha–1 at the age of 40 years, 57.4 m3·ha–1 at 60 years, 54.9 m3·ha–1 at 80 years, 63.1 m3·ha–1 at 100 years, and 91.8 m3·ha–1 at 120 years, corresponding to 6%–16% of a total standing volume.

Beschreibung: Inasmuch as LiDAR is becoming an increasingly prominent tool for forest inventory, it is timely to develop a framework to understand the statistical properties of LiDAR-based estimates. A model-assisted approach to estimation and inference when using LiDAR as a tool to inventory aboveground forest biomass is presented. An empirical example is also presented, yet the article’s focus is largely methodological. The sampling plan in the example is viewed as a two-stage design, with slightly different primary sampling units between the profiling and scanning laser surveys. A regression estimator is presented that uses biomass data from the Norwegian National Forest Inventory as the response variable and laser-derived variables as covariates. A major thrust of this article is the presentation of the variance of the estimators of total biomass and biomass per hectare as well as variance estimators.

Beschreibung: Sustaining forest ecosystem functions and services under climate change is a major challenge for forest management. While conceptual advances of adapting coupled social–ecological systems to environmental changes have been made recently, good practice examples at the operational level still remain rare. The current study presents the development of adaptation options for 164 550 ha of commercial forests under the stewardship of the Austrian Federal Forests (AFF). We used a comprehensive vulnerability assessment as analysis framework, employing ecosystem modeling and multicriteria decision analysis in a participatory approach with forest planers of the AFF. An assessment of the vulnerability of multiple ecosystem goods and services under current management served as the starting point for the development of adaptation options. Measures found to successfully reduce vulnerability include the promotion of mixed stands of species well adapted to emerging environmental conditions, silvicultural techniques fostering complexity, and increased management intensity. Assessment results for a wide range of site and stand conditions, stand treatment programs, and future climate scenarios were used to condense robust recommendations for adapting the management guidelines currently used by AFF practitioners. Overall, our results highlight the importance of timely adaptation to sustain forest goods and services and document the respective potential of silvicultural measures.

Beschreibung: In forestry, science-based seed transfer systems, the foundation of effective reforestation programs, will likely be used in some form to mitigate the negative effects of climate change. In this study, we developed fixed and focal point seed transfer systems for interior spruce ( Picea glauca (Moench) Voss, Picea engelmannii Parry ex Engelm., and their hybrids) in British Columbia, Canada, and compared the effectiveness of both systems. Growth, phenology, and physiology traits were measured for 112 populations, and population means were transformed to principal components that were modeled using climate variables and multiple regression analysis. Compared with the fixed seed zone system, the focal point system had a greater area of seed use for a given risk of maladaptation. The relationship between growth and adaptive distance (i.e., adaptive similarity between test populations and populations local to test sites) was used to calculate critical seed transfer distances for focal point seed zones, which were defined according to expected forfeiture of growth. Changes in climate observed over the past 100 years and predicted in the next one third of a rotation were used to calculate appropriate assisted migration distances and develop methods for incorporating assisted migration into a focal point seed transfer system.

Beschreibung: Sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) is a keystone species in the northern hardwood forest, and decline episodes have negatively affected the growth and health of sugar maple in portions of its range over the past 50+ years. Crown health, growth, survival, and flower and seed production of sugar maple were negatively affected by a widespread decline event in the mid-1980s on the unglaciated Allegheny Plateau in northern Pennsylvania. A long-term liming study was initiated in 1985 to evaluate responses to a one-time application of 22.4 Mg·ha–1 of dolomitic limestone in four northern hardwood stands. Over the 23-year period ending in 2008, sugar maple basal area increment (BAINC) increased significantly (P ≤ 0.05) in limed plots from 1995 through 2008, whereas American beech (Fagus grandifolia Ehrh.) BAINC was unaffected. For black cherry (Prunus serotina Ehrh.), the third principal overstory species, BAINC and survival were reduced in limed plots compared with unlimed plots. Foliar Ca and Mg remained significantly higher in sugar maple foliage sampled 21 years after lime application, showing persistence of the lime effect. These results show long-term species-specific responses to lime application.

Beschreibung: Silvicultural treatments that aim to improve tree growth rates also have the potential to alter physical characteristics of the tree stem and thus affect the recovery of solid-wood products. We tested the hypothesis that manifest crown asymmetry in thinned Eucalyptus nitens (Deane & Maiden) Maiden plantations was affecting the development of stem shape. The crown and stem characteristics of 15 E. nitens trees from a 22-year-old thinning trial in northeastern Tasmania were examined. The trial had been thinned 16 years previously. Lowering the intensity of local intraspecific competition through thinning increased the crown dry mass in the north-facing aspect. No direct link was found between crown dry mass distribution and stem eccentricity. The direction of pith eccentricity at 3.0 m height was confined to the northwest and southeast sectors and averaged 11%; the degree of noncircularity in stems at 3.0 m height was strongly related to the ratio of stem diameter to total height squared. These results suggest that the dynamic loading from wind exposure plays a greater role in determining the extent and direction of pith eccentricity and stem cross-sectional circularity in E. nitens than does the static load from asymmetrical crown dry mass distribution.

Beschreibung: The study developed a conceptual framework for partitioning the components of diameter increment to potentially detect the influence of environmental changes. This process consisted of two steps. First, a multiplicative decomposition diameter increment model was introduced to evaluate the influence of ageing, site quality, competition status, and thinning effects on individual tree growth. Second, generalized additive models were applied to identify the nonlinear dynamic of growth trends caused by environmental changes. The conceptual framework was then applied to Norway spruce ( Picea abies (L.) Karst.) growing in southwest Germany. The database consisted primarily of tree ring series collected from trees cut from long-term experimental stands. Also, stand-level data were available from periodical remeasurements of these plots. The developed analytical technique effectively removed non-environment-related effects (ageing, site quality, and stand dynamic) from the growth signal provided in the diameter increment series. Growth trends deducted from estimates based on either nonlinear least squares, generalized nonlinear least squares, or nonlinear mixed-effects approaches displayed quite similar patterns. In general, the trend in diameter increment showed a long-term increase from the 1920s into the 1990s with a midterm depression in the 1940s that was followed by a significant decrease in the recent past.

Beschreibung: Nursery irrigation regimes that recharged container capacity when target volumetric water content reached 72%, 58%, and 44% (by volume) influenced Pinus ponderosa Douglas ex Lawson & C. Lawson growth more than either a 1:1 (by volume) Sphagnum peat – vermiculite (PV) or a 7:3 (by volume) Sphagnum peat – sawdust (PS) medium. Exponential fertilization avoided confounding irrigation and fertilization. Temporary nitrogen (N) immobilization in PS caused transient allometric differences prior to hardening. Subsequent release of immobilized N during the onset of hardening, when daily N flux decreased from 4.2% to 1.6%, allowed PS seedlings to avoid foliar N dilution experienced by PV seedlings. Media yielded seedlings with similar final morphological characteristics, although PS seedlings had improved N status. At onset, particle density and volumetric water content were similar for both media, but PS held about 10% more water than PV at all water potentials at experiment conclusion. Exposure to the driest water content (44%) decreased seedling growth and root N status compared with cohorts that were provided ample moisture (72%). Despite maximum tissue heterogeneity within samples and regardless of irrigation regime, seedlings became 1.3‰ more depleted of13C as the growing season progressed. Refinement of sampling procedures, with focus on ontogenetics, may improve subsequent use of stable carbon isotopes in nursery research.

Beschreibung: In forest inventories, regression models are often applied to predict quantities such as biomass at the level of sampling units. In this paper, we propose a model-based inference framework for combining sampling and model errors in the variance estimation. It was applied to airborne laser (LiDAR) data sets from Hedmark County, Norway, where the model error proportion of the total variance was found to be large for both scanning (airborne laser scanning) and profiling LiDAR when biomass was estimated. With profiling LiDAR, the model error variance component for the entire county was as large as 71% whereas for airborne laser scanning, it was 43% of the total variance. Partly, this reflects the better accuracy of the pixel-based regression models estimated from scanner data as compared with the models estimated from profiler data. The framework proposed in our study can be applied in all types of sample surveys where model-based predictions are made at the level of individual sampling units. Especially, it should be useful in cases where model-assisted inference cannot be applied due to the lack of a probability sample from the target population or due to problems of correctly matching observations of auxiliary and target variables.

Beschreibung: One of the assumed advantages of variable-retention (VR) harvesting over clearcut harvesting is reduced postharvest leaching losses of nitrogen. We test this assumption by synthesizing results from long-term field trials in a meta-analysis. Overall, clearcutting significantly increased soil NO3-N concentration, NO3-N as a proportion of soluble inorganic nitrogen (SIN), N concentration in leachates, N flux, nitrification rates, and pH, but not total N, NH4-N, SIN concentration, ammonification, or N mineralization rate. The proportion of soil NO3-N in deciduous forests increased immediately and returned to preharvest levels within five years; the effect was delayed in coniferous forests, but levels remained elevated for several years. Deciduous leaf litter decomposed faster and needle litter decomposed more slowly on clearcut sites than in uncut forests. Single-tree selection caused smaller changes in NO3-N than removal of groups of trees (i.e., gap creation) and led to smaller increases in NO3-N as a proportion of SIN than clearcut harvesting. High levels of retention (〉70%) were required to maintain uncut stand N-cycling characteristics. Postharvest NO3-N levels could be predicted from NO3-N availability in the uncut forests.

Beschreibung: Existing literature investigates the effect of the number of cored trees per plot (N) on chronology statistics. The present study sought to highlight (i) the effect of N on the reliability of both chronology and climate–growth relationships and (ii) its variability across five European tree species with differentiated ecophysiological patterns. Fifty-eight pure, even-aged forests were sampled across France. For each plot, dendroecological investigations were carried out using chronologies built from 28 to three trees. Chronology reliability was studied using the mean intertree correlation (rbt) and the expressed population signal (EPS), whereas the climate–growth relationships were evaluated through the bootstrapped correlation coefficients (BCC). The accuracy of the dendroecological investigations decreased with decreasing N: EPS and BCC approached zero, implying that the signal common to all trees weakened. Thus, most of the significant correlations became nonsignificant when the sample size decreased from 28 to three trees per plot. Differences were found between species. For a given sample size, the shade-intolerant species Quercus petraea and Pinus sylvestris displayed lower intertree differences in growth-index series (higher rbt) and higher EPS than the shade-tolerant species Abies alba, Fagus sylvatica, and Picea abies. These latter species also displayed a greater sensitivity to sample size decrease, with a stronger BCC weakening and a higher proportion of changes in correlation significance. The EPS threshold of 0.85 was reached for around six to 10 trees for shade-intolerant species versus 20–30 for the shade-tolerant ones and generally corresponded to a mean correlation precision of around 0.06. We finally propose a general method to estimate this precision.

Beschreibung: Reports of drought-associated forest mortality have increased around the world, but the mechanisms of mortality are rarely direct in nature. Biotic agents may kill trees that could otherwise recover and can perpetuate and expand mortality after the stress is relieved. Sudden aspen decline (SAD) has caused rapid, widespread branch dieback and mortality of quaking aspen ( Populus tremuloides Michx.). We compared insects and diseases in 162 damaged and neighboring healthy plots to determine contributing factors and their ecological roles. Cytospora canker, bronze poplar borer, and aspen bark beetles were the most common agents in damaged plots and correlated with crown loss and other factors related to SAD. This was the first documented outbreak of Trypophloeus populi , an aspen bark beetle. As bark beetles and bronze poplar borer increased in damaged stands, they tended to attack trees with healthier crowns. Environmental stress may have directly affected the success of these agents by increasing host susceptibility followed by a density-dependent increase in the insects’ invasive ability. In contrast, Cytospora canker had an identical relationship to crown loss in healthy versus damaged plots, suggesting that it was not limited by inoculum but responded to host susceptibility. Most other pathogens and insects contributed little to SAD and appear to be primary or weakening agents. The biotic agents of mortality in a decline differ greatly from primary agents and play complex and varied roles in healthy versus declining stands.

Beschreibung: Over time, chronic small-scale disturbances within forests should create distinct stand structures and spatial patterns. We tested this hypothesis by measuring the structure and spatial arrangement of gaps and canopy patches. We used airborne LiDAR data from 100 sites (cumulative 11.2 km2) in the Pacific Northwest, USA, across a 643 year chronosequence to measure canopy structure, patch and gap diversity, and scales of variance. We used airborne LiDAR’s ability to identify strata in canopy surface height to distinguish patch spatial structures as homogeneous canopy structure, matrix–patch structures, or patch mosaics. We identified six distinct stand structure classes that were associated with the canopy closure, competitive exclusion, maturation, and three patch mosaics stages of late seral forest development. Structural variance peaked in all classes at the tree-to-tree and tree-to-gap scales (10–15 m), but many sites maintained high variance at scales 〉30 m and up to 200 m, emphasizing the high patch-to-patch heterogeneity. The time required to develop complex patch and gap structures was highly variable and was likely linked to individual site circumstances. The high variance at larger scales appears to be an emergent property that is not a simple propagation of processes observed at smaller spatial scales.

Beschreibung: One of the challenges often faced in forestry is the estimation of forest attributes for smaller areas of interest within a larger population. Small-area estimation (SAE) is a set of techniques well suited to estimation of forest attributes for small areas in which the existing sample size is small and auxiliary information is available. Selected SAE methods were compared for estimating a variety of forest attributes for small areas using ground data and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) derived auxiliary information. The small areas of interest consisted of delineated stands within a larger forested population. Four different estimation methods were compared for predicting forest density (number of trees/ha), quadratic mean diameter (cm), basal area (m2/ha), top height (m), and cubic stem volume (m3/ha). The precision and bias of the estimation methods (synthetic prediction (SP), multiple linear regression based composite prediction (CP), empirical best linear unbiased prediction (EBLUP) via Fay–Herriot models, and most similar neighbor (MSN) imputation) are documented. For the indirect estimators, MSN was superior to SP in terms of both precision and bias for all attributes. For the composite estimators, EBLUP was generally superior to direct estimation (DE) and CP, with the exception of forest density.

Beschreibung: This paper deals with the response of silver fir ( Abies alba Mill.) growth to climate, mainly drought, presenting data from southern Kosovo, for which only little information is available. Two cores from 55 dominant trees were extracted at two sites representing the limits of the natural distribution of silver fir. We built 80- and 112-year-long chronologies for each site. Comparison of both ring width chronologies showed that they were diverse. Pointer year analysis indicated that high spring temperatures and ample rainfall (1082 mm) influenced positively silver fir growth (wide ring), while low spring temperatures and scarce precipitation had an inverse effect. Bootstrapped response functions confirmed that April and May temperatures of the current growth year influenced positively silver fir growth at the low-elevation site, while the July precipitation of the previous growth year had a negative influence. At the high-elevation site, warm previous December temperatures had a positive influence on silver fir growth. Drought indices indicated two periods (1953–1961 and 1994–2001) with moderate drought. Correlation analysis between silver fir radial growth and drought indices revealed that the impact of drought on radial growth was significant at the time scale of 1.5 months during the summer months.

Beschreibung: During the last decades, the average number of fires per year increased significantly. A twofold increase was observed in the Mediterranean Basin, whereas in the western United States, the increase was fourfold. Regional models for burn severity estimation are necessary to avoid time consuming and costly fieldwork at each individual site. Furthermore, the estimation errors should be assessed by burn severity classes to avoid overestimating models accuracy. To develop such models, this study assessed the relationship between the composite burn index (CBI) and several spectral indices across five burned sites in northeastern Spain. The nonlinear models coupled with spectral indices containing information from the short wavelength infrared provided the best statistical fit of the data at most individual sites and for the pooled data set. The estimation errors for highly burned sites were well below 10%, but for burned sites of low and moderate severity, the errors increased significantly. A strong linear relation was found between burn severity at the plot level and understory and overstory composites. This study demonstrates (i) the model consistency at the regional level and (ii) the need for new estimation methods in areas affected by low to moderate burn severities, even for relatively homogeneous forests.

Beschreibung: A mixed integer programming model was developed to estimate the delivered cost of woody biomass, including the costs associated with stumpage, bundling (if any), extraction, storage, loading and hauling, and chipping–grinding under different woody biomass handling systems. The model was designed to optimize a woody biomass based biofuel facility’s location with the objective of minimizing the total annual delivered cost of woody biomass under resource and operational constraints. The model was applied in the central Appalachian region within the state of West Virginia. Results showed that the optimal plant location would be at Addison or Grantsville in West Virginia, depending on the system used when daily demand is 900 tonnes of dry woody biomass. For that base-case scenario, the average delivered cost ranged from $2.30·GJ–1 to $3.02·GJ–1 across the systems. Extensive sensitivity analysis was performed under different scenarios, including biomass availability and purchase–stumpage price, demand, extraction distance, and fuel pricing. The delivered cost was mostly affected by woody biomass demand. Skidding distance had the least impact on the delivered cost. The results would be useful in facilitating the research and economic development of woody biomass utilization for bioenergy in the region.

Beschreibung: Conventional management of shoreline forest in harvested boreal landscapes involves retention of treed buffer strips to provide habitat for wildlife species and protect aquatic habitats from deleterious effects of harvesting. With shoreline forests being considered for harvest in several jurisdictions, it is important to determine the potential impacts of this disturbance on birds. In this study, responses of riparian- and upland-nesting birds to three levels of harvest (0%–50%, 50%–75%, and 75%–100% within 100 m of the water) in shoreline forests around boreal wetlands were assessed 1 year before and each year for 4 years after harvest relative to unharvested reference sites. Upland-nesting species showed variable responses to harvest, with greatest declines in abundance of interior forest nesting species (e.g., Ovenbird, Seiurus aurocapillus L.) with the highest levels of harvest. Shrub-nesting and generalist species increased in abundance in harvest treatments relative to reference sites. Riparian birds showed little response to harvest, suggesting that shoreline forest harvest has little effect on their abundance up to 4 years after harvest. Retention of small buffers may not be an effective management strategy for conservation of birds occupying shoreline forests, particularly interior forest nesting species. We suggest that alternatives to conventional buffer management be explored.

Beschreibung: In light of a significant increase in the warming trend observed in recent decades in semi-arid Mongolia, tree-ring attributes and anomalies were analysed to detect potential changes in the growth–climate relationship. In a moisture-limited environment, an increase in temperature could cause a shift in the seasonal response of trees to climate. Chronologies were developed for the dominant tree species (Larix sibirica Ledeb., Pinus sibirica Du Tour, and Pinus sylvestris L.) from north-central Mongolia. In addition to annual ring width, both earlywood and latewood width were measured, and tree-ring anomalies such as false rings and light rings were systematically identified. Earlywood width was mainly associated with precipitation in the year prior to ring formation and early growing season conditions. Temperature was associated with current year growth and mainly influenced latewood development. False rings were good indicators of early summer droughts, whereas light rings were mainly associated with a cold end of summer. A seasonal shift in the significance of monthly climate variables was observed in recent decades. This displacement presumably resulted from changes in the timing and duration of the growing season. Tree growth starts earlier in spring and is now affected by late summer to early autumn climate conditions.

Beschreibung: Urban systems analysis and especially the seminal contributions of the Globalization and World Cities Research Network (GaWC) so far mainly rely on the analysis of national and international office geographies of advanced producer services firms. This paper shows how the geography of demand-supply relationships and associated knowledge flows adds important qualitative information to the office geographies of the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. It contributes to our understanding of intercity relations and networks—and thus of urban systems more generally. We illustrate our approach by looking at private equity firms and their knowledge management strategies in Germany. Empirically, we analyze private equity firms’ business relations and networks with external partners as well as their geographical organization. While private equity firms’ geographical organization in Germany is characterized by decentralized concentration with nodes in Frankfurt and regional financial centres, there is evidence that among the latter Munich plays a special role. Only in Munich has private equity—cross-fertilized by other local financial actors—initiated a self-supporting development which strengthens Munich as a financial centre. The paper illustrates how the dynamics of private equity and its knowledge management lead to Germany’s financial system having a more tiered structure and how qualitative network analysis can help deepen our understanding of urban systems development.

Beschreibung: Coastal alpine forests are highly vulnerable to oceanic climate trends, yet these diverse environmental interactions remain poorly understood. We used a multispecies perspective to try to better assess the radial growth response of alpine treeline species within the Northeast Atlantic region of North America to climate variables using bootstrapped correlation analysis. The four species present, black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.), white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss), balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.), and eastern larch (Larix laricina (Du Roi) K. Koch) were sampled in an effort to capture tree–climate sensitivity that is representative of this entire alpine treeline. The climate–growth relationships of spruce trees were comparable with those reported in other Labrador studies, but spring drought sensitivity as reported for coastal northern white spruce trees was not observed. Rather, high levels of precipitation suggest that drought did not limit the radial growth of any of the four species. The relatively small number of statistically significant correlations between monthly climate variables and fir and larch trees suggests that factors other than climate limit their radial growth. The multispecies approach better highlighted the range of species-specific relationships between alpine treeline forests and maritime climates (monthly temperature and precipitation) found at the treeline ecotone.

Beschreibung: The tree mortality model plays an important role in simulating stand dynamic processes. Past work has shown that the disaggregation method was successful in improving tree survival prediction. This method was used in this study to forecast tree survival probability of Chinese pine (Pinus tabulaeformis Carrière) in Beijing. Outputs from the tree survival model were adjusted from either the stand-level model prediction or the combined estimator from the forecast combination method. Our results show that the disaggregation approach improved the performance of tree survival models. We also showed that stand-level prediction played a crucial role in refining outputs from a tree survival model, especially when it is a very simple model. Because the forecast combination method produced better stand-level prediction, we prefer the use of this method in conjunction with the disaggregation approach, even though the performance gain in using the forecast combination method shown for this data set was modest.

Beschreibung: Post-stratification is used to reduce the variance of estimates of the mean. Because the stratification is not fixed in advance, within-strata sample sizes can be quite small. The survey statistics literature provides some guidance on minimum within-strata sample sizes; however, the recommendations and justifications are inconsistent and apply broadly for many different population structures. The impacts of minimum within-strata and total sample sizes on estimates of means and standard errors were examined for two forest inventory variables: proportion forestland and cubic net volume. Estimates of the means seem unbiased across a range of minimum within-strata sample sizes. A ratio that described the decrease in variability with increasing sample size allowed for assessment of minimum within-strata sample requirements to obtain stable estimates of means. This metric indicated that the minimum within-strata sample size should be at least 10. Estimates of standard errors were found to be biased at small total sample sizes. To obtain a bias of less than 3%, the required minimum total sample size was 25 for proportion forestland and 75 for cubic net volume. The results presented allow analysts to determine within-stratum and total sample size requirements corresponding to their criteria for acceptable levels of bias and variability.

Beschreibung: Land-use history can play a significant role in shaping forest communities. We considered the effects of agricultural land-use legacies on the distribution of non-native invasive plants a century after abandonment in a watershed in western North Carolina, USA. Forest sites that were previously in cultivation and abandoned ca. 1905 were compared with nearby reference sites that were never cultivated. The most common invasive plants were Celastrus orbiculatus Thunb., Microstegium vimineum Trin., and Lonicera japonica Thunb. Formerly cultivated sites and plots positioned downslope from roads had the most invasives. Soil cation concentration and pH were positively correlated with invasive presence and abundance. Historic agricultural plots where the successional tree Liriodendron tulipifera L. was dominant had the highest soil cation concentrations and soil pH and the greatest abundance of invasive plants. Disentangling the cause–effect relationships between land-use history, the biotic community, and the abiotic template presents a challenge, but understanding the role of land-use legacies may provide important insights regarding the mechanisms underlying the establishment and spread of invasive plants in forest ecosystems. Our results suggest that land-use history at Bent Creek may be facilitating plant invasion indirectly by causing a shift in overstory community composition that in turn creates more suitable understory conditions for shade-tolerant invasive plants.

Beschreibung: Estimates of aboveground biomass and nutrient stocks are commonly derived using equations that describe tree dimensional relationships. Despite the widespread use of this approach, there is little information about whether equations specific to stand age are necessary for accurate biomass predictions. We developed equations for small trees (2–12 cm diameter) of six species in four young northern hardwood stands. We then compared our equations with equations used frequently in the literature that were developed in mature stands (Whittaker et al. 1974. Ecol. Monogr. 44: 233–252). Our equations for yellow birch ( Betula alleghaniensis Britt.) predicted 11%–120% greater stem wood for individual trees compared with the equations from Whittaker et al. and, on average, 50% greater aboveground yellow birch biomass in the four stands that we studied. Differences were less pronounced for sugar maple ( Acer saccharum Marsh.) and American beech ( Fagus grandifolia Ehrh.); our equations predicted, on average, 9% greater aboveground stand biomass for sugar maple and 3% lower biomass for American beech compared with Whittaker et al. Our results suggest that stand age may be an important factor influencing the aboveground allometry and biomass of small yellow birch trees in these developing northern hardwood stands.

Beschreibung: The emerald ash borer (EAB) ( Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire) is a nonnative phloem-feeding beetle that was accidentally introduced near Detroit, Michigan, two to three decades ago. North American ash ( Fraxinus spp.) exhibit little or no resistance, and as this insect species expands its range, extensive mortality results. Previous studies of the impacts of EAB, typical of most insect and disease impact studies, utilized data acquired from sites with known infestations and cannot be used to make regional estimates of change on forest land. By contrast, this study investigated the regional impacts of EAB on the affected resource using information from a large-scale forest inventory (Forest Inventory and Analysis program of the US Department of Agriculture, Forest Service) previously implemented to estimate regional forest resources. Results indicate that since 1980, ash has been increasing throughout many of the Great Lakes States but EAB is reversing this trend in recently invaded areas. Within 50 km of the epicenter of the EAB invasion, a major decline was observed after 2004. For growing stock (trees at least 12.7 cm diameter at breast height), average ash volume decreased from 12.7 to 3.2 m3·ha–1 and mortality increased from 0.1 to 1.4 m3·ha–1·year–1 on timberland between the 2004 and 2009 inventories.

Beschreibung: Logging residues are increasingly being extracted for bioenergy purposes. This study estimates how extraction of fine woody debris (FWD) may affect the overall habitat availability for 577 species of wood- and bark-inhabiting basidiomycetes, beetles, and lichens in Sweden using Norway spruce ( Picea abies (L.) Karst.) as their primary substrate. We combined modeling of (i) the amount of various types of woody debris available throughout a forest rotation in managed forests with (ii) a classification of each species’ associations with different types of wood. In three different regions, we compared a scenario with no logging residue extraction with three different levels of extraction. Our results suggest that the extraction may cause a 35%–45% reduction in aboveground FWD and a more than 20% decline in the potential amount of substrate for about 50% of the species (affecting basidiomycetes and beetles more than lichens). The intensified forestry during the last century has, however, steadily increased the production of FWD. Furthermore, no red-listed species is primarily associated with logging residues of Norway spruce. Therefore, the current situation in Sweden with extraction of 70% of Norway spruce FWD on 50% of the clearcuts probably constitutes a minor contribution to the regional extinction risks.

Beschreibung: The hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae Annand) is an invasive hemipteran that poses a major threat to eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carrière) forests in the United States. We conducted three surveys over a five-year period that assessed the density of hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) and a second invasive pest, the elongate hemlock scale (EHS; Fiorinia externa Ferris), overstory hemlock mortality, and hemlock regeneration in ~140 hemlock stands (mean size, 44 ha; range, 7–305 ha) within a 7500 km2 north–south transect of southern New England (USA). In each stand, we rated HWA and EHS density on 50 hemlock trees using a 0–3 scale (0, none; 1, 1–10 organisms/m branch; 2, 11–100 organisms/m branch; 3, 〉100 organisms/m branch). Data on the presence or absence of regeneration were taken in 2005; in 2007 and 2009, we quantitatively assessed regeneration by counting the number of hemlock seedlings in three 16 m2 plots per stand. In 2005, 81% of sampled stands had HWA, 72% had EHS, and 66% had hemlock regeneration. In 2007, 86% of sampled stands had HWA, 79% had EHS, and 46% had hemlock regeneration. In 2009, 91% of stands had HWA, 87% had EHS, and 37% had hemlock regeneration. The proportion of stands with hemlock regeneration declined 46% between 2005 and 2009, and hemlock seedling density declined 71% between 2007 and 2009. A best-fit model selection algorithm found that this decrease was inversely correlated with stand-level adelgid density. There was no correlation between the change in seedling density and stand-level density of the elongate hemlock scale. The apparent decline in regeneration suggests that the ecosystem-level changes currently occurring in southern New England may be difficult to reverse.

Beschreibung: Despite their ecological importance, the role and effects of insect outbreaks on stand dynamics of the northern boreal forests in North America have still to be demonstrated. The study was conducted between the 51st and 52nd parallels in Quebec, Canada, to identify mechanisms governing regeneration of high-latitude stands by investigating variations in growth of trees during stand development. Chronologies of tree-ring width and individual dynamics of growth in height and volume were assessed in black spruce ( Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P) of one even-aged and five uneven-aged stands. Uneven-aged stands contained trees up to 340 years old and representing almost every age class. Several growth reductions were observed that were synchronized between stands and were characterized by high amplitudes but different percentages of affected trees. These reductions were followed by marked growth releases. Even if the absence of nonhost species prevented the building of chronologies that could confirm the origin of growth reductions, the findings suggested that spruce budworm ( Archips fumiferana Clemens [syn.: Choristoneura fumiferana (Clemens)]) outbreaks contribute to the formation and maintenance of the uneven-aged structure of older black spruce stands at high latitudes.

Beschreibung: Airborne laser scanning based forest inventories employ two major methods: individual tree detection (ITD) and the area-based statistical approach (ABSA). ITD is based on the assumption that trees are of a certain form and can be delineated using airborne laser scanning techniques, whereas ABSA is an empirical method based on the relations between area-level forest attributes and laser echo height distributions. These two methods are compared here within the same test area in terms of their usefulness for estimating mean forest stand characteristics and tree size distributions. All evaluations were performed using leave-one-out cross validation. The average errors in volume and basal area did not differ significantly between the methods. ABSA resulted in overall better accuracies when estimating the diameter and height of the basal area median tree and the number of stems, whereas ITD produced significantly biased estimates for the number of stems and the mean tree size. Tree size distributions were estimated with slightly better accuracy using ABSA. More comprehensive investigations revealed that both methods were not able to estimate forest structure (tree size distribution and spatial distribution of tree locations), which in turn, affected the estimation accuracies.

Beschreibung: A convenient method is necessary for assessing the availability of soil nitrogen in plantation Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) stands in the Pacific Northwest. The objective of this research was to use soil parent materials (SPMs) and soil nutrient regimes (SNRs) to determine the most efficient method to characterize soil nitrogen availability in Douglas-fir stands. It was hypothesized that SPMs and SNRs would effectively separate stands with distinctive climate, site, and soil characteristics and forest floor and soil carbon and nitrogen reserves. At 60 Douglas-fir stands, SPMs and SNRs were determined, and soil particle percentages, soil depth, and forest floor and soil nitrogen and carbon contents were measured to a depth of 1 m. Soils of sedimentary origin and very rich and rich SNRs contained greater nitrogen and carbon contents than those from glacial and igneous origins and medium SNRs. Sedimentary SPMs and very rich SNRs were developed from older parent materials and had significantly greater soil depths and finer textures than those from glacial SPMs and medium SNRs. SNRs and SPMs are recommended as good estimators of soil nutrient pools and soil characteristics in Douglas-fir plantation forests of the Pacific Northwest.

Beschreibung: Wood formation requires a continuous supply of carbohydrates for structural growth and metabolism. In the montane belt of the central Austrian Alps, we monitored the temporal dynamics of xylem growth and nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC) in stem sapwood of Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris L.) during the growing season of 2009, which was characterized by exceptional soil dryness within the study area. Soil water content dropped below 10% at the time of maximum xylem growth at the end of May. Histological analyses have been used to describe cambial activity and xylem growth. Determination of NSC was performed using specific enzymatic assays revealing that total NSC ranged from 0.8% to 1.7% dry matter throughout the year. Significant variations (P 〈 0.05) of the size of the NSC pool were observed during the growing season. Starch showed persistent abundance throughout the year, reaching a maximum shortly before onset of late wood formation in mid-July. Seasonal dynamics of NSC and xylem growth suggest that (i) high sink activity occurred at the start of the growing season in spring and during late wood formation in summer and (ii) there was no particular shortage in NSC, which caused P. sylvestris to draw upon stem reserves more heavily during the drought in 2009.

Beschreibung: Terrestrial lichens are an important part of the winter diet of forest-dwelling caribou ( Rangifer tarandus caribou (Gmelin, 1788)), and developing forest management guidelines to support high lichen biomass could enhance both individual- and population-level health of this threatened species. Our objective was to develop an index to assess terrestrial lichen biomass available to caribou at the landscape scale using ecoforest maps based on forest characteristics (age, density, and height) and geographical variables (slope, altitude, and latitude). We sampled 439 sites within 8340 km2 of the spruce–moss domain located 〉100 km north of the Saguenay River (Quebec, Canada). Since they are known to support terrestrial lichen, we sampled only spruce-dominated stands older than 50 years, representing 41.8% of the study area. Using a two-step approach, we first modeled lichen occurrence and thereafter lichen biomass in sites where lichens were found. Lichen occurrence was positively correlated with latitude but negatively with stand age, height, and density. Lichen biomass was primarily a function of altitude and tree density. Using this index could prioritize conservation of areas that are most likely to contain high lichen biomass, thus favoring caribou population maintenance in logged landscapes.

Beschreibung: Partial cuts are increasingly proposed to maintain habitats for species negatively affected by clearcutting, even if their benefits on nonpasserine birds and large mammals are still poorly documented. Our main objective was to evaluate effects of commercial thinning (CT) on spruce grouse ( Falcipennis canadensis L.), a game bird of the boreal forest. Because this species is known to be associated with a dense vegetation cover, we hypothesized that habitat use would be lower in treated sites. In spring 2006, we evaluated site occupancy in 94 forest stands (50 CT and 44 uncut stands) in Quebec by visiting each on three occasions during the breeding season (March–May). Additionally, during the molting period (May–July), we used radiotelemetry to monitor habitat use by 19 males. As compared with uncut stands, results show that a lower proportion of CTs were used in spring (39% versus 60%, after accounting for detection). During the molting period, CTs were also used less than expected according to their availability. The significant reduction of lateral and vertical forest cover in CT may explain these results. We conclude that even if CT is perceived beneficial for wildlife, it does not completely fulfill the needs of species associated with dense understory vegetation, such as spruce grouse.

Beschreibung: Hybridization frequently occurs among poplars, both naturally and artificially, hindering identification. Over 32 million clonal poplars, predominantly hybrids, have been planted throughout the Canadian prairies over the past century, making confirmation of genomic identity important. We developed a genotyping assay that rapidly diagnoses four compatible Populus species ( Populus balsamifera L. and Populus deltoides Bartr. ex Marsh.: indigenous, Populus laurifolia Ledeb. and Populus nigra L.: exotics) and their hybrids found throughout this ecozone. First, we sequenced 23 genes from representative provenances of the four Populus species to discover single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Second, we developed and validated a medium-throughput genotyping assay of 26 diagnostic SNPs within these genes. We used this assay to genotype 198 trees from natural populations as well as 30 clones (pure species and hybrids), including those broadly distributed by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Agroforestry Development Centre since 1910. This suite of SNPs has the resolving power to correctly identify pure species and hybrids of Populus. We confirmed the identity of clones of well-documented origin, complex hybrids with exotic components, and paternity of open-pollinated progenies from breeding programs. This diagnostic tool should prove useful for efficient molecular fingerprinting of breeding material and for further studies of interspecific gene flow on the Canadian prairies.

Beschreibung: Natural frequency (f) and damping ratio (ζ) are important dynamic parameters that affect the likelihood of tree failure. Much work has investigated these parameters on conifers, but few data exist for open-grown deciduous trees. Considering the risk to people and property from tree failures in residential areas, a better understanding of f and ζ for open-grown deciduous trees is warranted. We measured free vibrations of Bradford pear (Pyrus calleryana Decne. ‘Bradford’) and chestnut oak (Quercus prinus L.) to calculate f and ζ. Subsequently, we remeasured trees after pruning and leaf-drop to investigate the effect of each treatment on f and ζ. While testing one species, an ice storm provided a serendipitous opportunity to investigate the effect of ice accretion on f and ζ. For both species, f did not differ with respect to the cycle for which it was measured or the direction in which the tree swayed. Different types of pruning variably affected f and ζ, but the effect of leaves superseded the effect of pruning, as well as ice accretion. Pruning trees to reduce the likelihood of wind-induced failure may thus be of limited value if significant wind events typically occur when trees are leafless.

Beschreibung: To develop silvicultural strategies for restoring longleaf pine ( Pinus palustris Mill.) savannas, mortality and growth of overstory pines and midstory hardwoods and abundance and species richness of herbs were studied for 14 years after pine thinning and nonpine woody control. Pine cover in thinned stands was about half of that in nonthinned stands through year 5, but it lagged by only 8% and 3% in years 9 and 14, respectively, because of vigorous crown responses. Despite a cumulative mortality of 64% of hardwood stems from prescribed fires in years 0, 4, and 9, hardwood basal area in thinned stands (2.1 m2·ha–1) was three times that in nonthinned stands (0.7 m2·ha–1) in year 14. Thinning was associated with 13%–22% more cover and six to eight more species of herbs in years 3–8 but only 6% more cover and two more species in year 14 because of accelerated growth of pine cover and hardwood basal area. However, similar increases in cover and richness of herb species in the woody control treatment were retained through year 14 because it had sustained reductions in hardwood and shrub abundance. Silvicultural strategies that substantially delay encroachment by pines, hardwoods, and shrubs will be those most effective at retaining herb species in longleaf pine savannas, including planting pines at wide spacing, periodic thinning and woody control, and frequent burning.

Beschreibung: Thinning, the selective removal of some trees from a forest, is one way forest managers can reduce the probability that a forest will be susceptible to attack by bark beetles. Although this method has been shown to be effective, it is not clear whether the effect arises when pre-outbreak populations are small or during the epidemic phase when outbreaks are growing. We adopted a population dynamics approach to determine if the effect of limit or basal area thinning could be observed in the form of differential beetle recruitment using lodgepole pine ( Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud.) and ponderosa pine ( Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex P. & C. Laws.) mortality data from previously published studies as a proxy measure of mountain pine beetle ( Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins) population size. We found that mountain pine beetle populations exhibit density-dependent population dynamics that are influenced by the silvicultural history of their host’s stand. Thinning did not change the epidemic equilibrium but instead caused a shift in dynamics from linear to nonlinear. In a validation test, the models developed for thinned and unthinned stands predicted reproductive rates in independent locations. These data also suggest the epidemic dynamics of mountain pine beetle may be sensitive to perturbations and to systematic trends associated with climate variability and climate change.

Beschreibung: Stand age is often hard to measure accurately. Measurement error in age affects height estimates when height is projected from one age to another age. In this study, our objective was to derive an estimator for the variance of the component of projection error associated with the error in age. To evaluate the estimator, a simulation approach was employed and the results showed that the estimator worked well in most cases. When the variance of the error in age increases and the projection is forward, however, the estimator might not work as well as in other cases. Another objective was to examine how the error in age behaved under different height–age models and to what extent it affected height and site index estimates. The effect of the error in age depended on its magnitude, the height–age model, initial value of dominant height and age, and projection length. It was also shown that the effect was sometimes negligible, but it could be considerable in other cases. Data from 80 ponderosa pine ( Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex Laws.) trees in British Columbia, Canada, were used in an illustrative example.

Beschreibung: A two-stage sampling strategy is proposed to assess small woodlots outside the forests scattered on extensive territories. The first stage is performed to select a sample of small woodlots using fixed-size sampling schemes, and the second stage is performed to sample trees within woodlots selected at first stage. Usually, fixed- or variable-area plots are adopted to sample trees. However, the use of plot sampling in small patches such as woodlots is likely to induce a relevant amount of bias owing to edge effects. In this framework, sector sampling proves to be particularly effective. The present paper investigates the statistical properties of two-stage sampling strategies for estimating forest attributes of woodlot populations when sector sampling is adopted at the second stage. A two-stage estimator of population totals is derived together with a conservative estimator of its sampling variance. By means of a simulation study, the performance of the proposed estimator is checked and compared with that achieved using traditional plot sampling with edge corrections. Simulation results prove the adequacy of sector sampling and provide some guidelines for the effective planning of the strategy. In some countries, the proposed strategy can be performed with few modifications within the framework of large-scale forest inventories.

Beschreibung: Sudden oak death is dramatically altering forests throughout coastal California, but little is known about the communities that are assembling in affected areas. This emerging disease, caused by the exotic pathogen Phytophthora ramorum (S. Werres, A.W.A.M. de Cock), has had especially severe effects on tanoak ( Notholithocarpus densiflorus (Hook. & Arn.) Manos, Cannon & S.H. Oh), a broadleaf evergreen that is abundant in forests dominated by coast redwood ( Sequoia sempervirens (D.Don) Endl.). Tanoak, a valuable food source to numerous wildlife species, is unlikely to successfully regenerate in diseased areas, and thus, affected redwood forests are transitioning to a novel state. In this study, to predict which species might replace tanoak, we investigated regeneration patterns in heavily impacted stands in Marin County, California. Our main findings were as follows: (i) despite reductions in canopy cover, there is no evidence that any species other than tanoak has exhibited a regenerative response to tanoak mortality, (ii) the regeneration stratum was dominated by redwood and tanoak (other tree species were patchy and (or) scarce), and (iii) some severely affected areas lacked sufficient regeneration to fully re-occupy available growing space. Our results indicate that redwood is likely to initially re-occupy the majority of the ground relinquished by tanoak, but also provide evidence that longer-term trajectories are unresolved, and may be highly responsive to management interventions.

Beschreibung: Technological growth in production and efficient utilization of input factors are the two biggest contributors to total factor productivity (TFP). TFP of the four major forest industries (logging, pulp and paper, sawmill, and veneer and plywood industries) of Ontario are compared by analyzing their production structures using duality theory in production and costs. The study uses annual data of output and four inputs — labour, capital, energy and materials — from 1967 to 2003. Different restrictions on the translog cost function are applied to each industry to determine the cost function that best describes each industry’s technology, which is further used to estimate Morishima elasticities of substitution, own-price and cross-price elasticities, rate of technological change, and TFP. The production structure of sawmill and veneer and plywood industries is found to be linear homogeneous and homothetic, and that of logging and pulp and paper industries is non-homothetic. Further, Hicks neutral technological change for all four industries is rejected, indicating that the production structure in all four industries is biased in favour of certain inputs and against others. This suggests that policies that improve the efficiency of each industry should focus on input-saving factors of that industry, thereby improving its competitive position.

Beschreibung: Old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest provide a unique opportunity to examine tree species – soil relationships in ecosystems that have developed without significant human disturbance. We characterized foliage, forest floor, and mineral soil nutrients associated with four canopy tree species (Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirbel) Franco), western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.), western redcedar (Thuja plicata Donn ex D. Don), and bigleaf maple (Acer macrophyllum Pursh)) in eight old-growth forests of the Oregon Coast Range. The greatest forest floor accumulations of C, N, P, Ca, Mg, and K occurred under Douglas-fir, primarily due to greater forest floor mass. In mineral soil, western hemlock exhibited significantly lower Ca concentration and sum of cations (Ca + Mg + K) than bigleaf maple, with intermediate values for Douglas-fir and western redcedar. Bigleaf maple explained most species-based differences in foliar nutrients, displaying high concentrations of N, P, Ca, Mg, and K. Foliar P and N:P variations largely reflected soil P variation across sites. The four tree species that we examined exhibited a number of individualistic effects on soil nutrient levels that contribute to biogeochemical heterogeneity in these ecosystems. Where fire suppression and long-term succession favor dominance by highly shade-tolerant western hemlock, our results suggest a potential for declines in both soil Ca availability and soil biogeochemical heterogeneity in old-growth forests.

Beschreibung: The purpose of this study was to quantify the effects of climate change (in the form of elevated air and soil temperatures) on transpiration and sap flux rates of black spruce ( Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP). Five treatments were established in northern Manitoba, Canada, with the experimental design consisting of heated and control blocks. Air and soil temperatures were maintained approximately 5 °C above control temperatures using greenhouse chambers. Two of the chambers also included controls to maintain ambient vapor pressure difference (VPD). Sap flux (JS), was not significantly different among treatments in the May or July time periods. However, JS was significantly greater for heated VPD controlled trees than for trees in all other treatments when averaged over the entire study period. JS was positively correlated to photosynthetic photon flux density for all trees. Lower photosynthetic photon flux density in chamber treatments resulted in the creation of models used to estimate JS and canopy transpiration (EC) values that were used in the analysis. Average daily and cumulative growing season EC values were significantly greater for the heated VPD controlled treatments than for other treatments. The results from this study suggest that EC of boreal black spruce will increase if VPD remains unchanged while air temperatures increase.

Beschreibung: Constructing models can be complicated when the available fitting data are highly correlated and of high dimension. However, the complications depend on whether the goal is prediction instead of estimation. We focus on predicting tree mortality (measured as the number of dead trees) from change metrics derived from moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer satellite images. The high dimensionality and multicollinearity inherent in such data are of particular concern. Standard regression techniques perform poorly for such data, so we examine shrinkage regression techniques such as ridge regression, the LASSO, and partial least squares, which yield more robust predictions. We also suggest efficient strategies that can be used to select optimal models such as 0.632+ bootstrap and generalized cross validation. The techniques are compared using simulations. The techniques are then used to predict insect-induced tree mortality severity for a Pinus radiata D. Don plantation in southern New South Wales, Australia, and their prediction performances are compared. We find that shrinkage regression techniques outperform the standard methods, with ridge regression and the LASSO performing particularly well.

Beschreibung: Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has high potential as a rapid nondestructive approach to identifying wood species and estimating properties that affect their utilization. This study found that NIRS could differentiate certain wood species groups. True firs (balsam fir ( Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) and subalpine fir ( Abies lasiocarpa (Hook.) Nutt.)) could be distinguished from pine and spruce in eastern and western spruce–pine–fir, respectively, more than 95% of the time. Western hemlock ( Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.) could be differentiated from amabilis fir ( Abies amabilis Douglas ex J. Forbes) in the Hem–Fir species group with about 90% accuracy. Average wood moisture content (MC) of air-dried southern pine and western redcedar ( Thuja plicata Donn ex D. Don) samples wood could be estimated by NIRS ±10%–30% at high moisture contents and more accurately (±2%–5%) below 30% MC. Conditioned samples of amabilis fir had predicted MCs within 2%–3% of measured values in the 0%–30% MC range. However, the broad applicability and response of NIRS to a number of factors may be its greatest weakness, since measurements for a specific response, such as MC or species differentiation, may be confounded by the effects of other variables, such as surface roughness and localized density differences. It is recommended that instrumentation with a relatively large probe (large illumination area) be used to average such variables in the sample.

Beschreibung: Forest edge length is important for landscape ecological analysis, including the analysis of fragmentation. In this paper, we estimate forest edge length using field sample data from the German National Forest Inventory as an example. The complex plot design of many large-area forest inventories allows for the estimation of forest edge length at different spatial resolutions. As expected, estimates depend on the spatial resolution: longer estimated edge lengths resulted from observations at finer spatial resolutions. From the comparison of estimated edge lengths at different spatial resolutions, conclusions about the irregularity of forest edges can be drawn: more irregular forest boundaries resulted in greater differences between the estimated lengths for different spatial resolutions. One conclusion is of particular relevance: reported forest edge length values are meaningless unless their spatial resolution is also reported. The analysis presented is an add-on to the standard estimations from a forest inventory, producing additional, ecologically meaningful information. It is contended that many more nonstandard analyses of forest inventory data are possible either immediately or with minor modifications to the plot design.

Beschreibung: The choice between even- and uneven-aged forest management is a topical issue as the negative impacts of clear-felling are being increasingly criticized and the profitability of even-aged management has been questioned. This study compared these management systems in spruce and pine stands in terms of timber, carbon, and bilberry benefits, all of which can be predicted with reasonable accuracy and quantified in terms of money. Management was optimized by maximizing the total net present value (NPV) of the three benefits in a steady-state situation. The currently recommended type of even-aged management was also included in the comparisons. Uneven-aged management was the best in terms of the total NPV and with respect to bilberry benefits (NPV of bilberry harvesting). It was also better than even-aged management in terms of timber benefits when the discount rate was more than 1%. The ranking was less clear in terms of carbon sequestration and discounted carbon benefits.

Beschreibung: Assessing forest productivity is important for developing effective management regimes and predicting future growth. Despite some important limitations, the most common means for quantifying forest stand-level potential productivity is site index (SI). Another measure of productivity is gross primary production (GPP). In this paper, SI is compared with GPP estimates obtained from 3-PG and NASA’s MODIS satellite. Models were constructed that predict SI and both measures of GPP from climate variables. Results indicated that a nonparametric model with two climate-related predictor variables explained over 68% and 76% of the variation in SI and GPP, respectively. The relationship between GPP and SI was limited (R2 of 36%–56%), while the relationship between GPP and climate (R2 of 76%–91%) was stronger than the one between SI and climate (R2 of 68%–78%). The developed SI model was used to predict SI under varying expected climate change scenarios. The predominant trend was an increase of 0–5 m in SI, with some sites experiencing reductions of up to 10 m. The developed model can predict SI across a broad geographic scale and into the future, which statistical growth models can use to represent the expected effects of climate change more effectively.

Beschreibung: Despite the significance of interannual variation of soil respiration (RS) for understanding long-term soil carbon dynamics, factors that control the interannual variation of RS have not been sufficiently investigated. Interannual variation of RS was studied using a 6-year data set collected in a subtropical plantation dominated by an exotic species, slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm.), in China. The results showed that seasonal variation of RS was significantly affected by soil temperature and soil water content (SWC). RS in the dry season (July–October) was constrained by seasonal drought. Mean annual RS was estimated to be 736 ± 30 g C·m–2·year–1, with a range of 706–790 g C·m–2·year–1. Although this forest was characterized by a humid climate with high precipitation (1469 mm·year–1), the interannual variation of RS was attributed to the changes of annual mean SWC (R2 = 0.66, P = 0.03), which was affected by annual rainfall frequency (R2 = 0.80, P 〈 0.01) and not rainfall amount (P = 0.84). Consequently, precipitation pattern indirectly controlled the interannual variation of RS by affecting soil moisture in this subtropical forest. In the context of climate change, interannual variation of RS in subtropical ecosystems is expected to increase because of the predicted changes of precipitation regime.

Beschreibung: In the Andes of Chile, two valuable Nothofagus tree species coexist (Nothofagus dombeyi (Mirb.) Oerst. and Nothofagus nervosa (Phil.) Krasser). They could provide an opportunity for mixed plantations because of their ecological differences. In a mixed plantation with a checkerboard design on a good site where the two species naturally coexist, we evaluated their performance according to aspect and type of competition. Nothofagus dombeyi had a greater survivorship (90% vs. 65%) and growth (twice in diameter and 20% greater in height). Forking was significantly lower in N. nervosa (23% vs. 70%). Aspect did not significantly affect the performance of N. dombeyi. The north aspect had a significant negative effect on survivorship of N. nervosa, but aspect did not significantly affect growth or forking of this species. The aspect – type of competition interaction was only significant for N. nervosa in diameter and marginally significant in height. The checkerboard design allowed for a clear separation of interspecific and intraspecific competition in this mixed plantation. Interspecific competition favored growth of N. nervosa on the north aspect (facilitation) and was detrimental to N. nervosa on the south aspect (competition). These results have a direct application when planting mixtures of species of complementary ecological characteristics that can increase the value of the plantation.
