    Description: Active volcanoes characterized by open conduit conditions generate sonic and infrasonic signals, whose investigation provides useful information for both monitoring purposes and studying the dynamics of explosive processes. In this work, we discuss the automatic procedures implemented for a real-time application to the data acquired by a permanent network of five infrasound stations running at Mt. Etna volcano. The infrasound signals at Mt. Etna consist in amplitude transients, called infrasound events. The adopted procedure uses a multi-algorithm approach for event detection, counting, characterization and location. It is designed for an efficient and accurate processing of infrasound records provided by single-site and array stations. Moreover, the source mechanism of these events can be investigated off-line or in near real-time by using three different models: i) Strombolian bubble; ii) resonating conduit and iii) Helmholtz resonator. The infrasound waveforms allow us to choose the most suitable model, to get quantitative information about the source and to follow the time evolution of the source parameters.

    Description: We present the first nitrogen isotope data from hydrothermal fluids of Graciosa, Terceira and S. Miguel Islands (Azores, Portugal), together with helium isotope composition. 15N values are slightly enriched in light isotopes (from -0.7‰ to -2.2‰) with respect to air, while 3He/4He ratios range from 5 to 6 Ra in Sao Miguel island and from 8 to 9.1 Ra in Graciosa and Terceira islands. The latter values are similar to those found in olivine phenocrysts of basalts (Moreira et al., 1999; Madureira et al., 2005). Such isotope signatures seem to point to the presence of two different deeply-derived end-members: a 3He-rich primitive end-member evident in Terceira and Graciosa islands samples and a 3He-poor end-member characterizing samples from S. Miguel island. According to Madureira et al. (2005), the He primitive component which is more evident in the central parts of the Azores archipelago has to be related to a lower mantle contribution into the prevailing MORB component. On the contrary, the origin of the radiogenic crustal component is still open and debated between the contribution of recycled terrigenous sediments (Turner et al., 1997) and oceanic mantle lithosphere (Schaefer et al., 2002). Since 15N values from fluids vents and inclusions in basalt glasses were discovered to be good geochemical tracers of magma genetic processes, we determined molecular and isotope nitrogen composition (15NN2) in some hydrothermal fluids with the aim to provide additional information on the mantle composition beneath the Azores archipelago. Based on the N2/36Ar ratio we computed for each samples the 15N values of the non-atmospheric nitrogen (15Ndeep). Volatiles emitted from Graciosa and Terceira islands seem to have a common deep nitrogen isotope signature of about -1.5‰ likely resulting from a mixing between lower mantle (15N from 1‰ to 4‰) and upper mantle (15NMORB from -3‰ to -7‰). On the other hand, the 15Ndeep feeding the fumaroles at S. Miguel is close to -5.5‰. Such a 15N-depleted values seem to indicate a probable nitrogen origin from a deep source derived from the recycling of ancient oceanic plate into the upper mantle (MORB). rather than from the recycling of terrigenous sediments transported on top of the descending plate that should have lead to 15N-enrichments.

    Description: Fogo volcano is an active central volcano, with a lake filled caldera, in the central part of São Miguel Island, Azores, whose current activity is limited to hydrothermal manifestations such as active fumarolic fields, thermal and CO2 cold springs and soil diffuse degassing areas. It is affected by important active tectonic structures, with high seismic activity and practically continuous micro-seismicity. A recurrent feature from the seismicity observed in volcanic regions is the occurrence of clusters of similar earthquakes, whose origin can be attributed to the repeated action of a similar source mechanism at the same focal area. Doublets/multiplets were identified in this study within a catalogue of small magnitude (usually 〈 3) volcano tectonic events recorded in 2003–2004 by a selection of stations around Fogo volcano. All events have been cross-correlated and pairs whose waveforms exhibited a cross-correlation coefficient equal to or higher than 0.9 were analysed using the coda-wave interferometry technique. Subtle velocity variations found between events highlight a seasonal cycle of the velocity patterns, with lower velocity in winter time and higher velocity during summer months. Those results, together with quantitative differences between the same doublets at different stations, exhibit an excellent correlation with rainfall. A seasonal effect can also be broadly seen in the seismicity occurrence, and some of the swarms recorded over the two year period occur during the wettest season or close to episodes of abundant (above average) rainfall. Moreover, temporal and spatial analysis of several swarms highlighted the lack of any mainshock–aftershock sequence and organized migration of the hypocenters. This is suggestive of a very heterogeneous stress field. Vp/Vs is found to be lower than usually observed in volcanic areas, an occurrence likely related to the presence of steamy fluid associated with the geothermal system. Taken together, these observations suggest that pore pressurisation plays a major role in controlling a considerable part of the recorded seismicity. The geothermal fluids around Fogo massif have been identified as derived from meteoric water, which infiltrates through Fogo Lake and the volcano flanks and flows from south to north on the northern flank. All those elements seem to point to a role played by rainfall in triggering seismicity at São Miguel, possibly through pressure changes at depth in response to surface rain and/or an interaction with the geothermal system.

    Description: We analyze the volcano seismicity recorded during the 2007 eruption of Stromboli. Data-set is composed of the continuous recordings of a three-component broad-band seismometer and of a strainmeter. Starting from the characterization of the standard activity as a stationary phase of equilibrium, we investigate the non-equilibrium phase of the effusive process. A statistical analysis of the explosions reveals that the occurrence is always driven by a Poisson process as for the standard activity, even approaching the effusion phase, with the only difference in shortening the inter-times just during the effusion. A slightly different process can be advocated for the swarms of the explosions, because a maximum in the distribution of inter-times can be evidenced. Regarding the amplitudes of the explosion-quakes, they have a log-normal distribution until the effusion onset as in the standard Strombolian activity. The actual departure from that stationarity seems to be traced by an early deformative response at very long period. It appears as a transient oscillating signal characterized by a period of about three days that modulates the explosion amplitudes. In a conceptual organ pipe-like model it is related to the chocking of the pipe. The successive activity can be interpreted as the response of volcano to restore the equilibrium condition.

    Description: Mt. Vesuvius (southern Italy) is one of the volcanoes that poses the greatest risk in the world because of its highly explosive eruptive style and its proximity to densely populated areas. The urbanization around Mt. Vesuvius began in ancient times, and the impact of eruptions on human activities has been severe. This is testified to by the ruins of Pompeii, which are covered by the products of the plinian eruption that took place in A.D. 79 (Sigurdsson et al. 1985), and more recently by the published reports of the eruptions that occurred from 1631 to 1944. For these reasons, Mt. Vesuvius was also one of the first volcanoes to be equipped with monitoring instruments. Pioneering instrumental observations began just before the second half of the 1800s, when the Vesuvius Observatory was founded in 1841 (Imbò 1949). At that time, Vesuvius was very active (Ricciardi 2009), and its effusive and explosive eruptions often caused damage to the surrounding areas. At the same time, it was a famous tourist attraction that drew travelers from all over the world (Gasparini and Musella 1991). Since the middle of the 1800s, at least 12 eruptions have occurred that have been superimposed on persistent intra-crater activity that has been characterized by Strombolian explosions and by the formation of small lava lakes. The last eruption occurred on 18 March 1944 and marked a change in the status of Mt. Vesuvius, as it entered a closed-conduit phase that persists today. Following this last eruption, a change occurred in the 1960s, as documented by an increase in the occurrence rate of earthquakes. Since 1972, the monitoring of Mt. Vesuvius has improved over time and become more systematic, so that there is a remarkable dataset relating to the current phase of quiescence. Over more than a century and a half of observations, many monitoring instruments have been used for Mt. Vesuvius, including early seismometers, several of which are now kept in the Museum of Volcanology of the Vesuvius Observatory. The present monitoring system is based on seismological, geodetical geodetical, and geochemical observations performed using an instrumental network that was designed on the basis of the current state of the volcano while also taking into account the likely scenario of future unrest.

    Description: In this paper, a sensitivity analysis and procedure development for volcanic-plume sulfur dioxide and ash retrievals using ground thermal infrared camera have been carried out. The semiconductor device camera, considered as a reference, has a spectral range of 8–14 μm with noise equivalent temperature difference that is better than 100 mK at 300 K. The camera will be used to monitor and assess the hazards of Mt. Etna volcano to mitigate the risk and impact of volcanic eruptions on the civil society and transports. A minimum number of filters have been selected for sulfur dioxide (SO2) and volcanic ash retrievals. The sensitivity study has been carried out to determine the SO2 and volcanic ash minimum concentration detectable by the system varying the camera geometry and the atmospheric profiles. Results show a meaningful sensitivity increase considering high instrument altitudes and low camera-elevation angles. For all geometry configurations and monthly profiles, the sensitivity limit varies between 0.5 and 2 g · m−2 for SO2 columnar abundance and between 0.02 and 1 for ash optical depth. Two procedures to detect SO2 and ash, based on the least square fit method and on the brightness temperature difference (BTD) algorithm, respectively, have also been proposed. Results show that high concentration of atmospheric water vapor columnar content significantly reduces the ash-plume effect on the BTD. A water vapor-correction procedure introduced improves the ash retrievals and the cloud discrimination in every season, considering all the camera geometries.

    Description: L’Italia e l’Indonesia hanno avviato nel 2005-2006 un progetto di cooperazione sulle tematiche della mitigazione del rischio vulcanico. Nell’ambito di questo progetto è stata individuata la zona ovest di Sumatra come area di intervento. In particolare è stato preso in considerazione il vulcanoMarapi. Questo vulcano ha avuto frequente attività eruttiva nelle ultime decine di anni. L’ultima eruzione si è verificata nel 2004. La sua attività, sebbene di moderata intensità, pone un problema di protezione civile, poiché dal 1980 ad oggi ha causato diversi feriti e alcune vittime tra i turisti che hanno visitato l’area craterica sommitale. Allo scopo di monitorare lo stato di attività del Marapi, nell’ambito del citato progetto è stata realizzata una rete sismica a larga banda composta da 4 stazioni e basata su sensori Guralp GMG-40T da 60s di periodo e su acquisitori di tipo GAIA2, prodotti presso l’Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia. La strumentazione è stata portata dall’Italia ed è stata installata da un gruppo di lavoro formato da italiani ed indonesiani. Oltre all’installazione della strumentazione in campagna è stato necessario allestire un vero e proprio Centro di Monitoraggio presso l’Osservatorio di Bukittinggi, in prossimità delle pendici nordoccidentali del vulcano, dotato di calcolatori per l’acquisizione, l’analisi dei dati e la loro archiviazione. Il sistema per ilmonitoraggio sismologico realizzato alMarapi costituisce un importante strumento di prevenzione del rischio associato all’attività di questo vulcano e sta permettendo di creare un ricco data set utile a caratterizzare la sismicità della struttura vulcanica e dell’area circostante. Da un’analisi preliminare dei dati registrati nel periodo 19/10/2006 - 24/11/2008 si evidenzia che il vulcanomanifesta una sismicità di tipo VT ed LP. Nell’ agosto 2007 sono stati inoltre registrati segnali probabilmente attribuibili a modesta attività esplosiva nell’area sommitale. Italy and Indonesia started a cooperation project in 2005-2006 to cover issues for the mitigation of volcanic risk. In this project, the west area of Sumatra was identified as the area for intervention. In particular, the Marapi volcano was considered. This volcano has shown frequent eruptive activity over recent decades, with the last eruption occurring in 2004. Although its activity is of moderate intensity, it creates a civil protection problem, because since 1980 it has resulted in several injuries and a number of deaths among the tourists who visit the summit crater area. To monitor the activity of Marapi volcano as part of this project, a broadband seismic network has been implemented that consists of four stations based on Guralp GMG 40T sensors with period of 60 s and on GAIA2 data-loggers, which are produced at the INGV. The instrumentation was brought from Italy and was installed by a working group comprising Italians and Indonesians. In addition to the instrumentation in the field, it was necessary to set up a monitoring centre in the Bukittinggi Observatory, which is near the north-western slopes of the Marapi volcano. This is equipped with computers for data acquisition, analysis and archiving. The system for seismological monitoring that has been realized atMarapi volcano is an important tool in the prevention of the risk associated with this volcano, and it is providing a rich dataset that will be of great use for the characterization of the seismicity of the Marapi volcanic structure and the surrounding area. A preliminary analysis of the data recorded during the period 19/10/2006 - 24/11/2008 evidences that the volcano shows VT and LP seismicity. In August 2007 were also recorded signals probably attributable to small explosive activity in the summit area.

    Description: The number of tornillo events has recently increased at the Vulcano Island, Italy. While only 15 tornillos were recorded during 2004–2006, 584 events occurred in 2007–2008. They were located just below La Fossa Crater at depths ranging between 0.1 and 1 km b.s.l. During two intervals in 2007–2008 increases in the number of tornillos took place at the same time as temperature and geochemical anomalies were observed. The spectral content of the tornillos, generally characterized by one–two dominant spectral peaks near 6 and 10 Hz, varied over time, with changes also noted in the quality factors. The simplest source mechanism proposed for tornillos is the free eigenvibration of a fluid volume within a crack or a conduit. Based on this model, we propose a causal relationship between the temperature and geochemical anomalies and the increases in numbers of tornillos. As the amount of hydrothermal fluids increases during the anomalies, the upward flux of fluids grows. The consequent changes in the pressure, temperature and dynamics of the system of cracks and conduits result in the generation of tornillos. Based on the fluid-filled crack/conduit model, the shallow depths of the sources and the values of the quality factors, the fluid within the resonant crack/conduit was inferred to be an ash–gas or water droplet–gas mixture. Moreover, the observed variations in the wavefield can be caused by small changes in the location of the source, in the source mechanism, or in the medium in between the source and the seismic station. Finally, another peculiar feature of tornillos is the amplitude modulation that can be explained as a result of a beating phenomenon.

    Description: Nitrogen isotopes , N2/36Ar and 3He/4He were measured in volcanic fluids within different geodynamic settings. Subduction zones are represented by Aeolian archipelago, Mexican volcanic belt and Hellenic arc, spreading zones – by Socorro island in Mexico and Iceland and hot spots by Iceland and Islands of Cabo Verde. The δ15N values, corrected for air contamination of volcanic fluids, discharged from Vulcano Island (Italy), highlighted the presence of heavy nitrogen (around +4.3 ±0.5‰). Similar 15N values (around +5‰), have been measured for the fluids collected in the Jalisco Block, that is a geologically and tectonically complex forearc zone of the northwestern Mexico [1]. Positive values (15N around +3‰) have been also measured in the volcanic fluids discharged from Nysiros island located in the Ellenic Arc characterized by subduction processes. All uncorrected data for the Socorro island are in the range of -1 to -2‰. The results of raw nitrogen isotope data of Iceland samples reveal more negative isotope composition (about -4.4‰). On the basis of the non-atmospheric N2 fraction (around 50%) the corrected data of 15N for Iceland are around -16‰, very close to the values proposed by [2]. In a volcanic gas sample from Fogo volcano (Cabo Verde islands) we found a very negative value: -9.9‰ and -15‰ for raw and corrected values, respectively.

    Description: Stress can undergo rapid temporal changes in volcanic environments, and this is particularly true during eruptions. We use two independent methods, coda wave interferometry (CWI) and shear wave splitting (SWS) analysis to track stress related wave propagation effects during the waning phase of the 2002 NE fissure eruption at Mt Etna. CWI is used to estimate temporal changes in seismic wave velocity, while SWS is employed to monitor changes in elastic anisotropy. We analyse seismic doublets, detecting temporal changes both in wave velocities and anisotropy, consistent with observed eruptive activity. In particular, syn-eruptive wave propagation changes indicate a depressurization of the system, heralding the termination of the eruption, which occurs three days later.

    Description: We have investigated thewavefield properties of the seismic signals generated by the explosions of Volc´an de Colima (M´exico). We have analysed these properties to understand the initial mechanism that triggered the explosive events. Our study is focused on the direct waves coming from the crater area. Thus, we have analysed a set of moderate volcanic explosions at Volc´an de Colima that was recorded by a small aperture seismic array over two periods: October 2005 and April 2006. We can distinguish two types of explosions, Vulcanian and ash-free events. Both types of explosions share the same characteristics, that is a long-period signal (not related to any type of emission) before the arrival of high frequency phases, and a later high frequency signal directly related to ash or gas emission. We have applied the Zero Lag Cross Correlation technique to obtain backazimuth and apparent slowness of the incoming waves. We have also applied polarization analysis to the record of every detected volcanic explosion. By comparing the results of both of these analyses, we have been able to identify the dominant wave types that comprise the seismic wavefield and infer in time and space a possible primary source mechanism that would trigger the volcanic explosions. We have observed an apparent slowness variation of the first onset of the long-period (LP) signal with a possible upward migration of the source; the depth of the source has been identified at a range between 2.6 and 3.3 km below the crater, associated with the range of measured apparent velocities relative to the first onset of the LP signal.

    Description: Fracture reactivation is a widespread process in nature even though evidence of magma-induced reactivation is less documented. Here we provide evidence of the reactivation of a fracture system on the upper flank of the Mt. Etna volcano and consider its possible implications in understanding the recent volcanic and tectonic activity. A NNW–SSE trending fracture, partly accompanied by magma emplacement in the form of a laterally propagating dike, formed in 1989 on the upper SE flank of Etna. Lava effusions in 1991–1993, 2001, and 2006 were associated with volcano-tectonic (VT) seismicity and ground deformations on the upper part of the volcano, which document the seismogenetic involvement of the 1989 fractures, although without eruptive phenomena along the discontinuity. In addition to the aforementioned episodes of VT seismicity, differences in the characteristics of the background seismic radiation (volcanic tremor) were measured at stations close to these fractures during the eruptive activity on 24 November 2006, for which more detailed volcanological and seismological time histories are available. Moving on from these findings, we analyze volcanic tremor data recorded close to the summit and along the S flank of the volcano to highlight the interactions between seismic radiation and the 1989 fracture system. Centroid location of volcanic tremor and wave field characteristics at stations of the permanent local seismic network of Etna highlight the guidance role played by the 1989 fractures during the eruptive activity on 24 November 2006. In addition, the collected data shed light on hitherto unknown structural features, which appear to connect the volcano summit to the lower SE slope and also play an important role in controlling the instability of the E flank. More generally, this study shows how (1) using an integrated approach, it is possible to link apparently different features to a common structure, showing uniform and distinct dynamics relevant at the volcano scale, and (2) fracture reactivation can also occur by means of magma intrusion, playing an important role in the transfer of magma within a volcanic edifice.

    Description: We conducted geophysical–geochemical measurements on a ∼2 kmN–S profile cutting across the Pernicana Fault, one of the most active tectonic features on the NE flank of Mt. Etna. The profile passes from the unstable E flank of the volcano (to the south) to the stable N flank and significant fluctuations in electrical resistivity, self-potential, and soil gas emissions (CO2, Rn and Th) are found. The detailed multidisciplinary analysis reveals a complex interplay between the structural setting, uprising hydrothermal fluids, meteoric fluids percolating downwards, ground permeability, and surface topography. In particular, the recovered fluid circulation model highlights that the southern sector is heavily fractured and faulted, allowing the formation of convective hydrothermal cells. Although the existence of a hydrothermal system in a volcanic area does not surprise, these results have great implications in terms of flank dynamics at Mt. Etna. Indeed, the hydrothermal activity, interacting with the Pernicana Fault activity, could enhance the flank instability. Our approach should be further extended along the full extent of the boundary between the stable and unstable sectors of Etna for a better evaluation of the geohazard in this active tectonic area.

    Description: Assessment of the hazard from lava flow inundation at the active volcano of Mount Etna, Italy, was performed by calculating the probability of lava flow inundation at each position on the volcano. A probability distribution for the formation of new vents was calculated using geological and volcanological data from past eruptions. The simulated lava flows from these vents were emplaced using a maximum expected flow length derived from geological data on previous lava flows. Simulations were run using DOWNFLOW, a digital-elevation-model-based model designed to predict lava flow paths. Different eruptive scenarios were simulated by varying the elevation and probability distribution of eruptive points. Inundation maps show that the city of Catania and the coastal zone may only be impacted by flows erupted from low-altitude vents (〈1500 m elevation) and that flank eruptions at elevations 〉2000 m preferentially inundate the northeast and southern sectors of the volcano as well as the Valle del Bove. Eruptions occurring in the summit area (〉3000 m elevation) pose no threat to the local population. Discrepancies between the results of simple, hydrological models and those of the DOWNFLOW model show that hydrological approaches are inappropriate when dealing with Etnean lava flows. Because hydrological approaches are not designed to reproduce the full complexity of lava flow spreading, they underestimate the catchment basins when the fluid has a complex rheology.

    Description: By using new high-resolution (2 m) digital elevation model derived from the 2005 LiDAR survey of Mt. Etna volcano (Italy), our study measured the classical morphometrical parameters for scoria cones, i.e. Wco (cone width), Wcr (crater diameter), H (cone height) as well as volume, inclination of cone slope and substrate, and a number of other parameters for 135 scoria cones of Mt. Etna. Volume and age distribution of cones shows that there is no direct structural control on their emplacement in terms of Etna's rift zones. The cones are progressively smaller in size toward summit, which can be explained by the large volcano's feeding system and progressively frequent lava burial toward top. A careful analysis of H/Wco ratio (determined as 0.18 for other volcanic fields worldwide) shows that this ratio strongly depends on (1) the calculation method of H and (2) lava burial of cone. For Etnean cones, applying an improved method for calculating H relative to the dipping substrate results in a significantly lowered standard H/Wco ratio (0.137), which in turn questions the validity of the classical value of 0.18 in the case of large central volcanoes. The reduction of the ratio is not only due to methodology but also to the common lava burial. This can be expressed even better if Hmean is used instead of Hmax (Hmean/Wco = 0.098). Using this measure, at Etna, well formed cones have higher ratios than structurally deformed (e. g. double or rifted) cones. Furthermore, although the sampled scoria cones at Etna have formed in a relatively narrow time interval (〈 6500 yrs BP), there is a slight decrease in H/Wco corresponding to erosional changes detected globally (H/Wco = 0.143, 0.135 and 0.115 for three age classes of Etna's scoria cones, corresponding to average slopes of 26.6, 23.9 and 23.7°). Because the morphometrical effect of position on a dipping substrate as well as lava burial exceeds the effect of erosion, we call attention to use caution in simply using the H/Wco ratio of scoria cones for detecting age, especially on large active volcanoes.

    Description: Following the January 17, 2002 catastrophic eruption of the Nyiragongo Volcano (Democratic Republic of Congo) located in the western branch of the East African Rift, a great effort has been devoted to the seismic surveillance of this volcanic area. The 2002 eruption destroyed one/tenth of the city of Goma, leaving more than 100,000 homeless. In order to correctly monitor the seismic activity at Nyiragongo volcano for both scientific and civil defence purposes, the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia in cooperation with GVO (Goma Volcanological Observatory), between November 2003 and May 2004 installed a new telemetered seismic network consisting of seven digital stations. The network is operational and seismic signals are continuously recorded at the GVO. In this study, we focus mainly on two aspects: (1) the deployment, in the field, of this new digital seismic network and the related real-time data acquisition system, and (2) the first results from a preliminary data analysis based on 6-month seismic recordings. Based on the waveforms and spectral analysis, long-period and very long period events (both, tectonic and volcanic-tectonic earthquakes), have been detected. Furthermore, we succeeded in locating more than 100 earthquakes. These results should strongly encourage the use of such a network data for seismotectonic studies of the area.

    Description: We use a kinematic GPS and laser range finder survey of a 200 m-long section of the Muliwai a Pele lava channel (Mauna Ulu, Kilauea) to examine the construction processes and flow dynamics responsible for the channel–levee structure. The levees comprise three packages. The basal package comprises an 80–150 m wide ′a′a flow in which a ∼2 m deep and ∼11 m wide channel became centred. This is capped by a second package of thin (〈45 cm thick) sheets of pahoehoe extending no more than 50 m from the channel. The upper-most package comprises localised ′a′a overflows. The channel itself contains two blockages located 130 m apart and composed of levee chunks veneered with overflow lava. The channel was emplaced over 50 h, spanning 30 May–2 June, 1974, with the flow front arriving at our section (4.4 km from the vent) 8 h after the eruption began. The basal ′a′a flow thickness yields effusion rates of 35 m3 s−1 for the opening phase, with the initial flow advancing across the mapped section at ∼10 m/min. Short-lived overflows of fluid pahoehoe then built the levee cap, increasing the apparent channel depth to 4.8 m. There were at least six pulses at 90–420 m3 s−1, causing overflow of limited extent lasting no more than 5 min. Brim-full flow conditions were thus extremely short-lived. During a dominant period of below-bank flow, flow depth was ∼2 m with an effusion rate of ∼35 m3 s−1, consistent with the mean output rate (obtained from the total flow bulk volume) of 23–54 m3 s−1. During pulses, levee chunks were plucked and floated down channel to form blockages. In a final low effusion rate phase, lava ponded behind the lower blockage to form a syn-channel pond that fed ′a′a overflow. After the end of the eruption the roofed-over pond continued to drain through the lower blockage, causing the roof to founder. Drainage emplaced inflated flows on the channel floor below the lower blockage for a further ∼10 h. The complex processes involved in levee–channel construction of this short-lived case show that care must be taken when using channel dimensions to infer flow dynamics. In our case, the full channel depth is not exposed. Instead the channel floor morphology reflects late stage pond filling and drainage rather than true channel-contained flow. Components of the compound levee relate to different flow regimes operating at different times during the eruption and associated with different effusion rates, flow dynamics and time scales. For example, although high effusion rate, brim-full flow was maintained for a small fraction of the channel lifetime, it emplaced a pile of pahoehoe overflow units that account for 60% of the total levee height. We show how time-varying volume flux is an important parameter in controlling channel construction dynamics. Because the complex history of lava delivery to a channel system is recorded by the final channel morphology, time-varying flow dynamics can be determined from the channel morphology. Developing methods for quantifying detailed flux histories for effusive events from the evidence in outcrop is therefore highly valuable. We here achieve this by using high-resolution spatial data for a channel system at Kilauea. This study not only indicates those physical and dynamic characteristics that are typical for basaltic lava flows on Hawaiian volcanoes, but also a methodology that can be widely applied to effusive basaltic eruptions.

    Description: On 28 December 2002, new vents opened on the flanks of Stromboli, just below the summit craters, interrupting the persistent activity of the volcano with a 7-month-long effusive eruption. We here report on the plagioclase size distribution (PlgSD) in lava samples collected following the chronology of the 2002–2003 eruption. Data reveal a linear PlgSD similar to that found in samples of normal Stromboli activity, indicating that the switch from Strombolian explosive to effusive activity is not associated with changes in texture. Nevertheless, the crystal size distribution slopes and intercepts exhibit slight sinusoidal temporal variations that are here ascribed to a magma supply mechanism able to induce “resonance” in the crystal size distribution, with an amplitude that depends on the supply rate.

    Description: DEMs derived from LIDAR data are nowadays largely used for quantitative analyses and modelling in geology and geomorphology. High-quality DEMs are required for the accurate morphometric and volumetric measurement of land features. We propose a rigorous automatic algorithm for correcting systematic errors in LIDAR data in order to assess sub-metric variations in surface morphology over wide areas, such as those associated with landslide, slump, and volcanic deposits. Our procedure does not require a priori knowledge of the surface, such as the presence of known ground control points. Systematic errors are detected on the basis of distortions in the areas of overlap among different strips. Discrepancies between overlapping strips are assessed at a number of chosen computational tie points. At each tie point a local surface is constructed for each strip containing the point. Displacements between different strips are then calculated at each tie point, and minimization of these discrepancies allows the identification of major systematic errors. These errors are identified as a function of the variables that describe the data acquisition system. Significant errors mainly caused by a non-constant misestimation of the roll angle are highlighted and corrected. Comparison of DEMs constructed using first uncorrected and then corrected LIDAR data from different Mt. Etna surveys shows a meaningful improvement in quality: most of the systematic errors are removed and the accuracy of morphometric and volumetric measurements of volcanic features increases. These corrections are particularly important for the following studies of Mt. Etna: calculation of lava flow volume; calculation of erosion and deposition volume of pyroclastic cones; mapping of areas newly covered by volcanic ash; and morphological evolution of a portion of an active lava field over a short time span.

    Description: A series of computer microtomography experiments are reported which were performed by using a third-generation synchrotron radiation source on volcanic rocks from various active hazardous volcanoes in Italy and other volcanic areas in the world. The applied technique allowed the internal structure of the investigated material to be accurately imaged at the micrometer scale and three-dimensional views of the investigated samples to be produced as well as three-dimensional quantitative measurements of textural features. Thegeometryof thevesicle (gas-filledvoid) network in volcanic products of both basaltic and trachytic compositions were particularly focused on, as vesicle textures are directly linked to the dynamics of volcano degassing. This investigation provided novel insights into modes of gas exsolution, transport and loss in magmas that were not recognized in previous studies using solely conventional two- dimensional imaging techniques. The results of this study are important to understanding the behaviour of volcanoes and can be combined with other geosciences disciplines to forecast their future activity.

    Description: Seismic, deformation, and volcanic gas observations offer independent and complementary information on the activity state and dynamics of quiescent and eruptive volcanoes and thus all contribute to volcanic risk assessment. In spite of their wide use, there have been only a few efforts to systematically integrate and compare the results of these different monitoring techniques. Here we combine seismic (volcanic tremor and long‐period seismicity), deformation (GPS), and geochemical (volcanic gas plume CO2/SO2 ratios) measurements in an attempt to interpret trends in the recent (2007–2008) activity of Etna volcano. We show that each eruptive episode occurring at the Southeast Crater (SEC) was preceded by a cyclic phase of increase‐decrease of plume CO2/SO2 ratios and by inflation of the volcano’s summit captured by the GPS network. These observations are interpreted as reflecting the persistent supply of CO2‐rich gas bubbles (and eventually more primitive magmas) to a shallow (depth of 1–2.8 km asl) magma storage zone below the volcano’s central craters (CCs). Overpressuring of the resident magma stored in the upper CCs’ conduit triggers further magma ascent and finally eruption at SEC, a process which we capture as an abrupt increase in tremor amplitude, an upward (〉2800 m asl) and eastward migration of the source location of seismic tremor, and a rapid contraction of the volcano’s summit. Resumption of volcanic activity at SEC was also systematically anticipated by declining plume CO2/SO2 ratios, consistent with magma degassing being diverted from the central conduit area (toward SEC).

    Description: Influences of distant earthquakes on volcanic systems by dynamic stress transfer are well documented. We analyzed seismic signals and volcanic activity at Mount Etna during two periods, January 2006 and May 2008, that clearly showed variations coincident with distant earthquakes. In the first period, characterized by mild volcano activity, the effect of the dynamic stress transfer, caused by an earthquake in Greece (M = 6.8), was twofold: (1) banded tremor activity changed its features and almost disappeared; (2) a swarm of volcano‐tectonic (VT) earthquakes took place. The changes of the banded tremor were likely due to variations in rock permeability, caused by fluid flows driven by dynamic strain. The VT earthquake swarm probably developed as a secondary process, promoted by the dynamically triggered activation of magmatic fluids. The second period, May 2008, showed an intense explosive activity. During this interval, the dynamic stress transfer, associated with the arrival of the seismic waves of the Sichuan earthquake (M = 7.9), affected the character of the seismo‐volcanic signals and on the following day triggered an eruption. In particular, we observed changes in volcanic tremor and increases of both occurrence rate and energy of long period events. In this case, we suggest that dynamic stress transfer caused nucleation of new bubbles in volatile‐rich magma bodies with consequent buildup of pressure, highlighted by the increase of long period activity, followed by the occurrence of an eruption. We conclude that stresses from distant earthquakes are capable of modifying the state of the volcano.

    Description: Rapid extension and active normal faulting in the western extremity of the Corinth Gulf are accompanied by fast coastal uplift.We investigate Pleistocene uplift west of Aigion, by attempting to date remains of marine terraces and sedimentary sequences by calcareous nannoplankton and U-series analyses. Net uplift initiated recently, due to abandonment of an older rift-bounding fault zone and increase in activity on the presently active, coastal fault zone. This change apparently coincides with an abrupt slow down (or, termination) of secondary fault block tilting within the broader hangingwall block of the older zone, indicated by an angular unconformity that dates in the early part ofMIS10 ( 390–350 ka BP, preferably, in the earlier part of this period). Net uplift driven by the coastal zone resulted in the formation of MIS9c (330 ka) and younger terraces. The formation of the unconformity and the initiation of net uplift coincide temporally with a 300–400 ka unconformity recognized by recent studies in a wide area offshore Aigion i.e. they could be part of an evolutionary event that affected the entirewestern part of the Corinth Rift or, a large area therein. Uplift rate estimates at four locations are discussed with reference to the morphotectonic context of differential uplift of secondary fault blocks, and the context of possible increase in uplift ratewith time. Themost reliable and most useful estimate for uplift rate at the longitude of the studied transect is 1.74–1.85mm/year (time-averaged estimate for the last 240 ka, based on calcareous nannoplankton and sequence-stratigraphic interpretation)

    Description: The shape of volcanic particles is an important parameter holding information related to physical and geochemical processes. The study of particle shape may help improving knowledge on the main eruptive processes (fragmentation, transport and sedimentation) during explosive activity. In general, volcanic ash is formed by different components, namely juvenile, lithic and crystal particles, each one characterized by peculiar morphology. Moreover, quantifying the shape of pyroclasts is needed by the most recent dispersal models that consider shape parameters as input data to simulate tephra dispersal. However, measuring and quantifying the particle shape of volcanic particles are hard challenges especially when the number of the particles to investigate is high and the size small (e.g. sub-millimetric). Several methods are currently used in volcanology, the most common probably being quantitative shape analysis by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), based on the acquisition and subsequent analysis of digital images. Here, we describe a new methodology to measure the shape of volcanic particles by CAMSIZER®, a compact laboratory instrument developed by Retsch Technology (see http://www.retsch.com) for the simultaneous measurement of particle size distribution and particle shape of incoherent materials in the range of 30 µm to 30 mm, based on digital image processing. The sample is fed in from a vibrating feed channel that controls particles falling through the measurement field, where images of the particle are recorded by two digital cameras (Basic and Zoom) with different resolutions. Software, created by Retsch Technology, enables digital image processing to provide grain-size and shape parameters. This instrument, very common for quality control in industry, research and production monitoring of very different kinds of materials, has been installed at Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Sezione di Catania (INGV-CT) to measure and validate grain-size distribution of volcanic particles (Lo Castro and Andronico, 2008; 2009). Recently, we made a new study to assess its use in analysing the shape of volcanic particles. Size and shape of particles are calculated by applying a number of mathematical models related to different geometric parameters that influence the final results. Measures of shape parameters (e.g. Feret diameter, roundness, symmetry, width, length) are performed under a high resolution scanning of each particle in 64 different directions. In order to study volcanic particle shape characteristics, we performed different tests on volcanic and non-volcanic materials, considering the most commonly used shape parameters. Finally, we compared and validated the obtained results with those carried out by binocular microscope image analysis on the same samples. Furthermore, on the basis of these measurements, a clustering analysis is proposed. In particular, the Self Organized Map (SOM) and the K-means algorithm have been used jointly in order to partition a generic sample of volcanic ash particles into subsets sharing some common shape features. A fuzzy c-mean analysis has also been used to verify and compare results. These analyses were aimed at developing an automatic shape clustering of the volcanic ash particles. Preliminary results of both image analysis and statistical testing are shown to understand if CAMSIZER is a suitable tool for quantifying and characterizing volcanic particle shapes.

    Description: Grain size distribution is a key parameter in physical volcanology to describe and characterize tephra fall deposits. Walker (1973) used grain size parameters to propose a classification scheme of explosive volcanic eruptions. More recently, the role of grain size populations of eruptive mixtures at the vent has been widely considered a crucial input parameter for the application of numerical models simulating both plume and tephra dispersal (e.g. Cioni et al., 2003; Andronico et al., 2008; Scollo et al., 2008). Grain size analysis can be performed by various techniques that differ in their applicability, technology and affordability. The most commonly used technique is sieving, performed by a nested column of sieves arranged in decreasing order of aperture size (http://www.ivhhn.org/). Sieving can be performed manually or by machine shaking, usually in the particle range from 64 mm to less than 32 µm. Both these procedures are cumbersome, time-consuming and subject to many errors. Here, we present a new methodology to measure the distribution of volcanic particles by CAMSIZER® (Figure 1), an instrument developed by Retsch Technology GmbH (Haan) and Jenoptik AG (Jena) in Germany (see at http://www.retsch.com). CAMSIZER is a compact laboratory instrument for the simultaneous measurement of particle size distribution and particle shape of incoherent materials in the range of 30 µm to 30 mm, based on digital image processing. The sample is fed in from a vibrating feed channel that controls particles falling through the measurement field, where images of the particle flow are recorded by two digital cameras (Basic and Zoom) with different resolutions (Andronico et al., 2009). The Basic camera provides the analysis of the larger particles, while the Zoom camera focuses on smaller particles furnishing high resolution images of the finer classes of the wide measuring range. Software created by Retsch Technology enables processing digital images and providing grain size and shape parameters. Although this instrument is becoming very common in industry for quality control, research and production monitoring of very different kinds of materials, it has never been used before in volcanology. CAMSIZER has recently been installed at Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Sezione di Catania (INGV-CT) to measure grain-size distribution of volcanic particles within the volcanic monitoring activity of Eastern Sicily (Lo Castro and Andronico, 2008). As is well-known, this area is characterized by the presence of two of the most active volcanoes in the world, Mt. Etna and Stromboli, which commonly produce large quantities of tephra (e.g. Rosi et al., 2000; Alparone et al., 2007). The use of CAMSIZER on volcanic products ranging from fine lapilli to ash have allowed us to obtain detailed particle size analysis and drastically reduce the work and measuring time needed in classical sieve analysis. To optimize these objectives, CAMSIZER has been tested on different materials, not only volcanic, in order to calibrate the instrument and compare results with those obtained by sieving. In particular, we present results derived by two different kinds of test: the first regards repeatability by measuring the same sample several times to determine the accuracy of the instrument, the second concerns the compatibility between sieve analysis and CAMSIZER results. Our work suggests that CAMSIZER may constitute a good tool to improve grain size analysis in volcanology and thus help in tephra hazard assessments.

    Description: Satellite image such as Landsat 5 TM scene provides excellent representation of Earth and synoptic view of large geographic areas in different band combination. Landsat TM images allow automatic and semi-automatic classification of land cover, nevertheless the software frequently may have some difficulties in distinguishing between similar radiometric surfaces. In this case, the use of Digital Elevation Model (DEM) can be an important tool to identifydifferent surface covers. In this study, several False Color Composite (FCC) of Landsat 5 TM Image, DEM and the respective draped image of them, were used to delineate lithological boundaries and tectonic features of regional significance of the Payen Volcanic Field (PVF). PVF is a Quaternary fissural structure belonging to the back-arc extensional area of the Andes in the Mendoza Province (Argentina) characterized by many composite basaltic lava flow fields. The necessity to identify different lava flows with the same composition, and then with same spectral features, allows to highlight the improvement of synergic use of TM images and shaded DEM in the visual interpretation. Information obtained from Satellite data and DEM have been compared with previous geological maps and transferred into a topographical base map. Based on these data a new lithological map at 1:100.000 scale has been presented.

    Description: We present a numerical approach for modelling the complex sub-surface volcanic processes and associated geophysical signals. This method is based on the one-way coupling of the dynamics of a magmatic system and the response of the host rocks. The two systems are modelled independently, by two different numerical codes, that solve the equations of motion for the magmatic fluid and the equation of elasto-dynamics for wave propagation in the surrounding medium, respectively. Synthetic geophysical signals can be obtained and compared with those recorded by monitoring networks. The final aim is to understand how the complex physics of magma dynamics, coupled to its hosting medium, translates into geophysical data that can be measured and interpreted in order to understand sub-surface magma dynamics and forecast the short-term volcanic hazard. We applied this method to the Campi Flegrei volcanic system (southern Italy) and investigated the convection and mixing dynamics induced by the arrival of new CO2-rich magma into a hypothetical shallow magma chamber. The pressure waves originated by this system are propagated in the surrounding rocks, and the associated broad-band ground displacement and gravity anomalies are evaluated at the Earth’s surface.

    Description: We propose a method for analyzing the polarization of three-component digital recordings using the discrete wavelet transform (DWT). This method allows for the automatic detection and separation of seismic phases that have a coherent linear or elliptical polarization. It can be correctly used in the analysis of seismic signals relating to volcanic activity because they arise from a complex wave field that consists of near-field and far-field components that have frequency-dependent polarization. First, the analytic extension of the signal is decomposed using DWT, then each single component is used to determine a local complex polarization vector in the timescale domain. This analysis reveals the presence of seismic phases with coherent polarization over a range of DWT scales and finite temporal intervals. Using the orthogonality property of the DWT, it is possible to isolate a single coherent component, reconstructing it in the time domain and computing the full polarization tensor. This procedure can be fully automated, introducing a quantitative definition of wavelet polarization coherence on the DWT dyadic grid. A recursive algorithm (called POLWAV) starts from the wavelet coefficient with the highest modulus, and then selects all of the neighbors that show coherence with it above a given threshold. We show how the POLWAValgorithm can be used for separating wave-field components and for detecting coherent seismic phases on continuous recordings. Example applications to actual seismic recordings at Stromboli Volcano (Tyrrhenian Sea) are presented.

    Description: During the early stages of the 2004–2008 Mount St. Helens eruption, the source process that produced a sustained sequence of repetitive long-period (LP) seismic events also produced impulsive broadband infrasonic signals in the atmosphere. To assess whether the signals could be generated simply by seismic-acoustic coupling from the shallow LP events, we perform finite difference simulation of the seismo-acoustic wavefield using a single numerical scheme for the elastic ground and atmosphere. The effects of topography, velocity structure, wind, and source configuration are considered. The simulations show that a shallow source buried in a homogeneous elastic solid produces a complex wave train in the atmosphere consisting of P/SV and Rayleigh wave energy converted locally along the propagation path, and acoustic energy originating from the source epicenter. Although the horizontal acoustic velocity of the latter is consistent with our data, the modeled amplitude ratios of pressure to vertical seismic velocity are too low in comparison with observations, and the characteristic differences in seismic and acoustic waveforms and spectra cannot be reproduced from a common point source. The observations therefore require a more complex source process in which the infrasonic signals are a record of only the broadband pressure excitation mechanism of the seismic LP events. The observations and numerical results can be explained by a model involving the repeated rapid pressure loss from a hydrothermal crack by venting into a shallow layer of loosely consolidated, highly permeable material. Heating by magmatic activity causes pressure to rise, periodically reaching the pressure threshold for rupture of the ‘‘valve’’ sealing the crack. Sudden opening of the valve generates the broadband infrasonic signal and simultaneously triggers the collapse of the crack, initiating resonance of the remaining fluid. Subtle waveform and amplitude variability of the infrasonic signals as recorded at an array 13.4 km to the NW of the volcano are attributed primarily to atmospheric boundary layer propagation effects, superimposed upon amplitude changes at the source.

The NNW-SSE fracture system is located on the mid-upper SE flank of the volcano, and has experienced significant seismic activity during the past two decades. By using excellent documented records of seismic and volcanic activity on 24 November 2006 (the latter encompassing Strombolian activity, lava fountaining, ash fallout, pyroclastic flows, and lava emission from multiple vents at the Southeast Crater), we analyze the interaction between seismic radiation and the afore-mentioned fracture system. Our results highlight the importance of this system in controlling the polarization properties of seismic waves 17 years after its formation. In addition, the SE end of the 1989 fracture zone extends into several active faults, suggesting that they represent a single long structure, which plays an important role in the volcano-tectonic dynamics of Etna. Finally, this study shows how fracture reactivation can also occur by means of magma intrusion, strongly controlling the transfer of magma within a volcanic edifice.

These eruptions potentially can produce extensive flows that can inundate densely populated communities of the lower slopes (Guest and Murray, 1979; Behncke et al., 2005). Satellite remote sensing can be used during effusive eruptions to help monitoring the volcano, by determining effusion rates of the flows, aiding in hazard management. The degassing that takes place when magma is rising to the surface can be regularly monitored using ultraviolet spectroscopic methods (e.g. Andres et al., 2001, Sutton et al., 2001). Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) fluxes have been derived from correlation spectrometer (COSPEC) measurements at Mt. Etna (Italy) on a regular basis since 1987 (e.g. Caltabiano et al., 1994; Allard, 1997; Andronico et al., 2005; Burton et al., 2005; Burton et al., in press). Previous studies have compared field-based effusion rates with the measured SO2 fluxes to determine how much of the degassed magma is erupted onto Etna’s flanks in the form of lava flows (Allard, 1997; Harris et al., 2000). However, most of these studies examine bulk volumes erupted over an eruption rather than examining the short-term variations during eruptions. Determining the amount of lava erupted and/or the balance between the amount supplied and the amount erupted remains an unresolved issue. The main objectives of this paper are to examine such short-term variations using satellite-based effusion rates along with regularly measured SO2 fluxes. Using these measurements we determine how and when the volume of supplied magma is balanced by the volume of erupted lava during individual effusive eruptions.

    Description: We merge volcanological, structural, and volcanic tremor data to shed light on a fissure system opened on the upper SE flank of Mt. Etna, Italy, in 1989. The system propagates to about 6 km from the Southeast Crater (SEC), and although it is formed by dry (non-eruptive) NNW-SSE fissures, it was active throughout several eruptive episodes after 1989, such as in 1991-1993 and (at least in part) in 2001, 2004-2005, and 2006. Particularly, we focus our attention on a paroxysmal eruptive episode on 24 November 2006, which encompassed different eruptive styles, such as lava fountaining and effusion, and violent Strombolian explosions, involving several eruptive vents on and near the SEC. This event was documented by detailed field and aerial surveys and remote video cameras. The characteristics of the seismic radiation are analyzed considering: frequency content, wavefield properties, and centroid location of the volcanic tremor source. The synoptic analysis of volcanic phenomena and volcanic tremor data document that: i) an aborted intrusion of magma rose to ~2000 m above sea level in the late evening of 24 November, along the NNW-SSE direction from below the SEC towards the 1989 fracture system, ii) the fissures opened in 1989 strongly affected, approximately 17 years after their formation, the modality of propagation of the seismic energy radiation within the upper volcanic edifice. Besides the role played by the 1989 system on the properties of seismic radiation in 2006, the present study allows to postulate probable links between contiguous fault systems in the upper SE flank of Mt. Etna. Based on the structural framework on a volcano-wide scale, our results do indeed sketch out a hitherto unknown continuity of some faults affecting the southeastern flank, which might also shed some light onto the complex phenomenon of flank instability in the eastern sector of the volcano.

    Description: Active volcanoes characterized by open conduit conditions generate sonic and infrasonic signals, whose investigation provides useful information for both monitoring purposes and studying the dynamics of explosive processes. In this work, we discuss the automatic procedures implemented for a real-time application to the data acquired by a permanent network of five infrasound stations running at Mt. Etna volcano. The infrasound signals at Mt. Etna consist in amplitude transients, called infrasound events. The adopted procedure uses a multi-algorithm approach for event detection, counting, characterization and location. It is designed for an efficient and accurate processing of infrasound records provided by single-site and array stations. Moreover, the source mechanism of these events can be investigated off-line or in near real-time by using three different models: (1) Strombolian bubble; (2) resonating conduit and (3) Helmholtz resonator. The infrasound waveforms allow us to choose the most suitable model, to get quantitative information about the source and to follow the time evolution of the source parameters.

    Description: We investigated the banded tremor activity occurring at Mt. Etna volcano between August-October 2008 during the 2008-2009 eruption. The banded tremor occurred in episodes lasting 25-30 minutes with intervals in between the episodes of about 25 minutes. Seismic signal analyses showed that the banded tremor was characterised by spectral contents, wavefields and source locations that differed from the “ordinary” volcanic tremor. The infrasound recordings exhibited an intermittent infrasonic tremor alternating with the banded tremor episodes. Finally, nonlinear analyses suggested that banded tremor system can be considered chaotic, implying: i) sensitive dependence on initial conditions, suggesting not only that a banded tremor system requires particular conditions to generate, but also that slight variations of these conditions are able to greatly change the features of the banded tremor or even to stop it; ii) long-term unpredictability, that is, the impossibility to forecast the long-term evolution of the banded tremor. On the basis of all these results and analogies with geyser models, we suggest a model of banded tremor that invokes alternating recharge-discharge phases. Banded tremor is due to “perturbations” in shallow aquifers, such as fluid movement and bubble growth or collapse due to hydrothermal boiling, triggered by the heat and hot fluid transfer from the underlying magma bodies. This heat-fluid transfer also causes an increasing pressure in the aquifer leading to fluid-discharge. During this process the seismic radiation decreases and, if the fluid-discharge is well coupled with the atmosphere, acoustic signals are generated.

    Description: Stromboli is considered one of the most active volcanoes in the world, and its persistent but moderate explosive activity is only interrupted by occasional episodes of more vigorous activity accompanied by lava flows. A new effusive eruption began in late February, 2007 and was characterised by intense seismic activity throughout the whole period. The accurate seismic signals analysis showed the presence of families of events with similar waveform signatures (i.e. multiplets) located beneath the crater region. Since traditional location techniques do not allow obtaining reliable hypocentres, our analysis focused on high precision locations of the seismicity, in order to better define the source geometry of the events. Hypocentres, therefore, have been relocated considering two steps: the first, based on a robust probabilistic approach, is used to find the absolute position of the clusters; the second exploits a master-event concept for the relative location of the events. Finally, the shape of the clusters and the temporal migration of the foci were correlated with the eruptive phases. The results show that the occurrence of a cluster of events is related to the opening and closure of a vent opened in the Sciara del Fuoco slope and, in particular, to the intrusion of a dike injected by central conduit in a radial direction, whereas another cluster lies in a narrow vertical volume positioned under the crater area. The geometry of the clusters suggests a source region depicting the shallower feeding system. Overall, the results highlight that the high precision locations method is an efficient and quick tool to obtain a better understanding of the magmatic processes occurring during an ongoing eruption.

    Description: La Rete Sismica Mobile (RSM) in dotazione al Centro Nazionale Terremoti (CNT) è da anni impiegata nell’attività di monitoraggio in occasione di emergenze sismiche e vulcaniche ma soprattutto in numerosi progetti scientifici con particolare riguardo allo studio di dettaglio di specifiche aree e/o strutture sismotettoniche. In numerose occasioni gli esperimenti di acquisizione di nuovi dati sismici e le emergenze sismiche o vulcaniche degli ultimi anni hanno visto una collaborazione con altre unità di reti mobili sia interne all’INGV (la Sezione di Catania, la Sezione di Milano-Pavia e l’Osservatorio Vesuviano di Napoli) che esterne (ad esempio il Centro Ricerche Sismologiche di Udine). All’inizio del 2009 Jesús M. Ibáñez Direttore dell’Instituto Andaluz de Geofísica Universidad di Granada ha proposto alla RSM del CNT di partecipare all’esperimento di sismica passiva da realizzare al Teide, complesso vulcanico nell’isola di Tenerife, nell’ambito del Progetto di ricerca finanziato “High resolution imagin of seismogenetic volumes in active volcanoes, Tenerife and Deception Islands, and its significance for volcanic hazard assestment” (HISS). L’esperimento, iniziato il 10 novembre 2009 proprio con l’installazione di una delle 6 stazioni messe a disposizione dalla RSM del CNT, avrà la durata di circa un anno. In questo rapporto tecnico viene descritta la campagna di installazione della RSM del CNT.

    Description: In this paper, a novel methodology to measure trajectory and terminal velocity of volcanic ash in laboratory is presented. The methodology consists of: i) planning a lab-scale experiment in order to reproduce the sedimentation processes of fine volcanic ash based on the principle of dynamic similarity; ii) realizing the experimental set-up using a glass tank filled with glycerine, a web-cam based vision system and a dedicated image post processing tool able to estimate the position and the terminal velocity of any particle falling in the tank; iii) performing a calibration procedure to accurately estimate the uncertainty on particle velocity; iv) comparing the experimental results with estimations obtained by some particle fallout models available in literature. Our results shows that there is a good agreement between experimental terminal velocities and those obtained applying a model which includes information on particle shape. The proposed methodology allows us to investigate how the particle shape affects the sedimentation processes. Since the latter is strategic to improve the accuracy on modeling ash fallout, this work will contribute to reduce risks to aviations during explosive eruptions.

    Description: A seismic noise recording experiment has been carried out in the Campi Flegrei volcanic area from March 9 to 26, 2009 in the framework of the INGV-DPC 2007-2009 agreement (Project V1 – UNREST). The project aimed at the realization of an integrated method for the definition of the unrest phases at Campi Flegrei. 21 digital three-component seismic stations equipped with broad band seismometers have been added to the existing 11 digital stations already deployed in the area. The preliminary results show a correlation between the seismic noise level and the anthropic activity, whereas the meteorological conditions seem affecting the low frequency seismic noise. These results are important to define the detection thresholds of the seismic signals generated during a possible renewal phase of the volcanic activity.

    Description: In this work the dune model introduced by Sauermann et al. (2001) is extended and applied to investigate the formation of different dune shapes on Mars and on Earth as function of wind directionality and sand availability. The formation of sand dunes on Mars under the present atmospheric conditions of the red planet is studied and conclusions about wind speed, migration velocity of dunes and changing wind regimes on Mars are presented. Field measurements of the shape of coastal transverse dunes are presented and the formation of coastal dune fields is explained. Finally, the formation of linear dunes by bimodal wind regimes is calculated. The simulations explain the appearance of exotic bimodal dune shapes in areas of low sand availability on Mars and on Earth.

Darauf aufbauend war es möglich, unter erstmaliger Verwendung von computergenerierten 3D-Modellen, die Kenntnisse über die Vorerzgebirgs-Senke unter Einbindung neuer Gesichtspunkte zu erweitern.Auf der Basis der vom Autor entwickelten geologisch-tektonischen 3D-Modellen der Steinkohlenreviere von Zwickau einschließlich des Mülsenfeldes sowie Lugau/Oelsnitz und unter Berücksichtigung der Ergebnisse neuerer Kartierungen und Untersuchungen in diesen Gebieten, werden Vorstellungen zur möglichen geologischen Entwicklung der Vorerzgebirgs-Senke dargelegt. Dabei wird ein vollständiges Bild der Beckenentwicklung, beginnend ab Westfal B/C (Flöha-Becken) bis rezent für den Senkungsraum dargestellt.Insgesamt flossen in die Auswertung 27 Flözverbreitungskarten (M. 1:5.000) der ehemaligen Steinkohlenreviere, 121 Schachtprofile, 139 Bohrungen (〉100 m) und ca. 50 geologischtektonische Profilschnitte unterschiedlicher Orientierung ein.     Description: Marine snow, underwater cameras, particle flux, aggregation, suspended particulate matter, particle transport. - This study focusses on the vertical distribution and transportation pathways of marine particles off NW-Africa with aid of optical methodologies. A profiling camera system and a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) was used for in-situ observations on the distribution, transport processes and sinking behaviour of marine particulate matter. Between the regional areas of investigation Cape Blanc, Dakhla and Cape Bojador significant differences could be observed with respect to distribution and transportation patterns. These differences are primarily related to the different primary production conditions between the investigation areas. Primary production is the most important factor for the abundance of particulate matter, where highest particle concentrations in the entire water column were seen off Cape Blanc. Next to primary production, water depth, currents and density gradients are factors influencing the particle distribution patterns. With respect to the prevailing transport processes, the Cape Blanc region is characterised by vertically orientated transport patterns. The present study indicates that the Permian-Triassic or Karoo phase of rifting was not responsible for the separation of East- and West-Gondwana, since that rift system failed in the Late Triassic. Instead the breakup of Gondwana occurred in the Late Liassic.     Description: Für die vorliegende Arbeit wurden aus dem alpinen Paläozoikum im Westabschnitt der Nördlichen Grauwackenzone schwachgradig metamorphe klastische Sedimentgesteine untersucht. Anhand der Sedimentpetrographie sowie der chemischen Analyse und 40Ar/39Ar-Datierung enthaltener detritischer Hellglimmer war die Provenienz des klastischen Detritus abzuleiten. Alle drei Untersuchungsmethoden erbrachten unabhängig voneinander ähnliche Aussagen zum Aufbau des Liefergebiets der klastischen Sedimentgesteine. Damit konnten die paläozoische Entwicklung der Nördlichen Grauwackenzone detaillierter entschlüsselt und bisher noch offene Fragen beantwortet werden.Die klastischen Abfolgen der Nördlichen Grauwackenzone können mehr als 2000 m Mächtigkeit erreichen. Ihre Sedimentation umfasst den Zeitraum vom Ordovizium bis in das Karbon. Anhand der Untersuchungen zur Petrographie erwiesen sich die untersuchten Sandsteine als quarzbetonte Grauwacken oder Subgrauwacken. Ihr Matrixanteil ist hoch, Quarz überwiegt deutlich gegenüber Feldspat- und Gesteinsklasten. Der überwiegende Teil der Modalanalysen zeigt für das klastische Material die Herkunft aus einem kontinentalen Bereich ("Continental Block Provenance"). Nur wenige Proben aus den stratigraphisch jüngsten Bereichen der klastischen Abfolgen belegen die Herkunft ihres Detritus aus einem in Abtragung befindlichen Orogen ("Recycled Orogen Provenance").

    Description: In the unglaciated areas of Antarctica, lake sediments act as archives of the regional environmental and climatic history. In most cases, the records are restricted to the Holocene. Amongst the few exceptions are lakes in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, southern Victoria Land, which are known to have remained mostly ice-free during the Last Glacial Maximum. Within the scope of an U.S.-American-German expedition in austral summer 2002/2003, several sediment cores were recovered from the three major lakes in the Taylor Valley: lakes Fryxell, Hoare, and Bonney. In order to reconstruct the late Quaternary regional environmental and climate history, sedimentological, biogeochemical, mineralogical, and chronological investigations were conducted on the sediment sequences recovered from Lake Hoare (core Lz1020) and East Lake Bonney (core Lz1023) within the scope of this thesis. Sediment cores from Lake Hoare with a maximum length of 2.3 m mainly consist of coarse-grained material and penetrate back into the late Weichselian, when Taylor Valley was occupied by the large proglacial Lake Washburn. This lake was dammed by the advanced Ross Sea ice sheet at the valley outlet and was mainly fed by meltwater of the ice sheet.     Description: Eleven lakes and ponds and three lacustrine sediment sequences from coastal East and North-East Greenland were studied for recent hydrological and phytoplankton characteristics and for palaeolimnology, respectively. The limnological survey of lakes and ponds from Store Koldewey in summer 2003 revealed cold, monomictic, thermally unstratified, alkaline and likely oligotrophic water bodies. The diatom phytoplankton, present in six lakes and dominated by four species, varied distinctly between the lakes. The results give information about the recent status of the ecology of these High Arctic freshwater bodies. The sediment sequences were investigated for their chronology, changes in physical and biogeochemical properties, macro- and microfossils, grain-size distribution and in the case of one sequence for its elemental profiles using XRF. The palaeolimnological studies address different time intervals at various temporal resolutions with particular attention to the latitudinal differences of late Quaternary climatic and environmental changes along the coast of East and North-East Greenland.     Description: Die mio-pliozänen Ablagerungen im NNW SSE streichenden Monastir-Florina-Ptolemais-Kozani/Servia-Graben beherbergen das größte zusammenhängende Braunkohlevorkommen in Bereich des Balkans. Das Becken erstreckt sich von Monastir (F.Y.R.O.M.) im Norden bis hin zur Region von Elassona im Süden (Makedonien/GR). Es umfasst eine Gesamtfläche von ca. 120 kmø. Mittlerweile werden ca. 71 % des elektrischen Energiebedarfs der Hauptstadt Athen durch die Energiegewinnung aus dem MFPK/S-G gedeckt. Diese rhythmisch entwickelten Lignitvorkommen zeigen, neben den bedeutenden wirtschaftlichen Aspekten, ein großes Potential für eine Paläoklima-Analyse des nordöstlichen mediterranen Raums. Das Neogen zeigt einen multiplen Wechsel von Kalt- und Warmzeiten mit vereinzelt deutlich höheren Temperaturen als heute an (Bradley, 1999). Die Ursachen hierfür können u.a. auf Variationen der Erdbahnparameter zurückgeführt werden, welche Schwankungen in der Insolation verursachen und somit das atmosphärisch-ozeanische System steuern. Zeitreihenanalysen belegten bereits in den 70er bis späten 90er Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts diese Variationen innerhalb mariner (Hays et al., 1976; Imbrie & Imbrie, 1980) und kontinentaler Ablagerungen (Santarelli et al., 1988, van Vugt et al., 1998. The melting of the big freshwater reservoirs will not only increase the global sea level, but will also influence the ocean currents. Therefore, it will be of particular interest to improve the currently available numeric climate models to achieve more accurate statements about climatic change and its consequences. In this work, the evaluation and the different applications of GPS and altimetry data will be described in respect to enhance models. The antarctic area of investigation, Dronning Maud Land (DML), is of particular interest for German polar research, because both the overwintering station Neumayer and the summer station Kohnen are located within it.     Description: Im Jahre 2002 fiel bei strukturgeologischen Kartierungen zur Untersuchung der rezenten Tektonik des Rheinischen Schiefergebirges erstmalig eine auffällige lineare Anordnung von Nestern Hügel bauender Waldameisen entlang von geologischen Störungszonen auf. Stichprobenartige Untersuchungen anderer, kleinräumiger Gebiete in Mitteleuropa führten zu ähnlichen Beobachtungen. In den meisten Gebieten fanden sich aktive Störungszonen an oder in der Nähe der Ameisennester. Diese, zunächst nur oberflächlichen Beobachtungen führten zu der Hypothese, dass das Auftreten von Nestern Hügel bauender Waldameisen an aktive, gaspermeable geologische Störungszonen gebunden sein könnte. Ein automatischer Inversionsalgorithmus basiert auf der Idee der evolutionären Berechnung. Die dargestellten Methoden werden auf die Interpretation der gravimetrischen Anomalien der Hellenischen Subduktionszone angewendet.     Description: Central Asia is characterized by a number of spectacular tectonic units such as the Tibetan Plateau, the Tien Shan intra-continental mountain belt and the Altyn Tagh strike-slip fault. Deformation of the lithosphere of these units is not well understood. In this dissertation, an attempt is made to answer the following tectonic questions: To what extent do the tectonic units formed in the upper crust in the course of the convergence between India and Eurasia weaken the underlying lithosphere? How is the Tibetan Plateau gravita-tionally compensated along its northern boundary? Do the Altyn Tagh and/or West Kunlun faults persist as vertical strike-slips throughout the crust and mantle lithosphere, thus representing a fundamental plate boundary? Which dynamic processes in the crust and mantle of the Tien Shan are responsible for intra-continental mountain building? What characterizes the local stress field in the Tien Shan and what causes the deformation of these mountains? To answer these questions, the elastic plate theory is used to interpret gravity and topography data, and in turn to derive specific characteristics of the lithospheric structure in Central Asia. Theoretical deflection of the elastic plate or plates were calculated using the 3D and 2D finite-difference methods.     Description: Mit dem Ziel der Rekonstruktion des jungquartären Klimawandels im südlichen Kaokoland (NW-Namibia) und einer daraus resultierend zu erstellenden regionalen Klimastratigraphie wurden sedimentologische und geochronologische Untersuchungen von äolischen Sandablagerungen und fluvial/aquatisch abgelagerten Beckensedimenten durchgeführt. Das Untersuchungsgebiet im nordwestlichen Namibia ist durch ein arides Klima gekennzeichnet, kann aber aufgrund der geologisch bedingten Kleinkammerung seines Reliefs in klimatische Gunst- und Ungunsträume für menschliche Besiedlung gegliedert werden. Die bislang vorliegenden Rekonstruktionen der Klimageschichte dieser Region gehen von einer seit dem Tertiär andauernden Aridität aus. Die quartäre Klimaentwicklung ist durch hygrische Fluktuationen geringer Ausprägung gekennzeichnet. Anhand der sedimentologischen und geochronologischen Ergebnisse wurde eine bis 16 700 Jahre vor heute zurückreichende Stratigraphie erarbeitet, in der Änderungen des Klimas dokumentiert sind. So sind um 8000 und um 4500 Jahre vor heute zwei feuchtere Phasen nachweisbar. Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchungen äolischer Sande belegen für die Folgezeit die seit mindestens 2000 Jahren vor heute andauernde Trockenheit mit ausgeprägter äolischer Dynamik. Die fluvial/aquatische Ablagerung der Beckensedimente endet im südlichen Kaokoland um 15 500 Jahre vor heute. Die nachfolgend einsetzende Phase äolischer Aktivität kann mit dem Aufbau der Wüstenlösse’ im nördlichen Kaokoland korreliert werden. Weiterhin wurde gezeigt, dass die feuchteren Phasen am Namib-Rand nicht die Intensität und Dauer aufweisen, wie sie östlich des Untersuchungsgebietes festgestellt wurden. Nicht zuletzt wird anhand der sedimentologischen Ergebnisse der untersuchten Dünen eine bisher nicht beschriebene Genese von Pseudoechodünen’ aus Sandrampen aufgezeigt.

    Description: Ein transversales Störungssystem im Nahen Osten, die Dead Sea Transform (DST), trennt die Arabische Platte von der Sinai-Mikroplatte und erstreckt sich von Süden nach Norden vom Extensionsgebiet im Roten Meer über das Tote Meer bis zur Taurus-Zagros Kollisionszone. Die sinistrale DST bildete sich im Miozän vor etwa 17 Ma und steht mit dem Aufbrechen des Afro-Arabischen Kontinents in Verbindung. Das Untersuchungsgebiet liegt im Arava Tal zwischen Totem und Rotem Meer, mittig über der Arava Störung (Arava Fault, AF), die hier den Hauptast der DST bildet. Eine Reihe seismischer Experimente, aufgebaut aus künstlichen Quellen, linearen Profilen über die Störung und entsprechend entworfenen Empfänger-Arrays, zeigt die Untergrundstruktur in der Umgebung der AF und der Verwerfungszone selbst bis in eine Tiefe von 3-4 km. Ein tomographisch bestimmtes Modell der seismischen Geschwindigkeiten von P-Wellen zeigt einen starken Kontrast nahe der AF mit niedrigeren Geschwindigkeiten auf der westlichen Seite als im Osten.     Description: The glacial-isostatic adjustment in Iceland resulting from the recent melting of the Vatnajökull ice cap is controlled by the viscosity distribution in the earth's interior and by the details of the melting history. Interpretations of the results of GPS and gravity measuring campaigns in the time interval 1991-2000 and 1992-1999, respectively, by means of laterally homogeneous earth models for the determination of the lithosphere thickness, the asthenosphere thickness and the asthenosphere viscosity have so far been not fully satisfactory. In particular near the ice margin, the fitting of the computed land uplift and gravity change to the observational data was inadequate, which may be related to the neglegt of the Iceland plume in the laterally homogeneous earth models. In the present study, a program package is used for the modelling of the land uplift and gravity change that allows the computation of load-induced perturbations of a Maxwell-viscoelastic, incompressible, self-gravitating, spherical earth model. To simulate the presence of the plume below the Vatnajökull, an axisymmetric viscosity distribution is used, where the plume radius and the plume viscosity are free parameters. Based on seismic results, a 6-km-thick lithosphere is assumed above the plume, which thickens to 35 km in the peripheral region of the plume. The melting history of the Vatnajökull is founded on interpretations of geomorphological and climatological investigations and is simulated by a load co-axial with the plume with parabolic profile and time-dependent radius. The results of the modelling favour a plume radius of ~80 km and a plume viscosity of (0.3-1.0) x 10^{18} Pa s.

    Description: Die Methode der Böschungsertüchtigung mit Erdbetonstützscheiben ist ein etabliertes Verfahren. In der Vergangenheit entwickelte Bemessungsverfahren für Böschungen mit Stützscheiben konnten sich bis heute nicht durchsetzen. Stattdessen behilft man sich in der Praxis mit einer Art Ersatzverfahren. Mit diesem Verfahren wird die Standsicherheit der Böschung mit Stützscheiben teilweise unzutreffend ermittelt. Dies wird in der Arbeit begründet und anhand von Beispielen verifiziert. Die Tragwirkung der Stützscheiben kann nur durch räumliche numerische Berechnungen ausreichend genau erfasst werden. Es wird eine zwingend erforderliche Typisierung der Stützscheiben bezüglich ihres Tragverhaltens und des Bruchmechanismus durchgeführt. Die erreichbare Stabilisierungswirkung der Stützscheiben hängt wesentlich von der Scheibengeometrie und dem Scheibenabstand ab. In der Arbeit werden für einen Scheibentypen der Versagensmechanismus, das Tragverhalten sowie deren Einflüsse ausführlich analysiert und anschließend ein Bemessungsverfahren hergeleitet. Für weitere Scheibentypen werden Vorschläge für mögliche Bemessungsverfahren angegeben.

    Description: Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde mittels sedimentologischer, petrographischer und geochemischer Methoden die ozeanographische Entwicklung der frühen Paratethys hin zu einem Randmeer während des Eozän/Oligozän-Übergangs rekonstruiert. Als Probenmaterial dienten Sedimentabfolgen aus fünf ausgewählten Bohrungen im ober-österreichischen Molassebecken. Die Lage der Bohrungen entspricht einem Transekt über den nördlichen Beckenbereich.     Description: Die Virtuelle Fachbibliothek GEO-LEO ermöglicht seit diesem September Wissenschaftlern die gleichzeitige Recherche in über 50 Dokumentenservern im In- und Ausland . Damit setzt GEO-LEO die Open-Access-Prinzipien für Geo- und Montanwissenschaftler vollständig um. Bereits seit Anfang des Jahres bietet die Virtuelle Fachbibliothek mit ihrer Publikationsplattform GEO-LEOe-docs Wissenschaftlern die Möglichkeit ihre Arbeitsergebnisse und Publikationen direkt im Internet zugänglich zu machen. Als sogenannter Data-Provider stellt GEO-LEO die Metadaten der aufgenommenen Dokumente anschließend über die standardisierte OAI-PMH-Schnittstelle zur Verfügung um die weltweite Zugänglichkeit der Dokumente wesentlich zu verbessern. Als Service-Provider erlaubt GEO-LEO nun auch die simultane Recherche und den direkten Zugang zu etwa 24.000 Volltexten auf weltweit verteilten Dokumentenservern. GEO-LEO, die von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) geförderte Virtuelle Fachbibliothek Geowissenschaften, Bergbau, Geographie, Thematische Karten, macht als Metasuchmaschine viele für Geo- und Montanwissenschaftler wichtige Informationsressourcen über ein zentrales Fachportal auffindbar. Das Internetangebot der Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen (SUB Göttingen) und der Universitätsbibliothek „Georgius Agricola“ der Technischen Universität Bergakademie Freiberg (UB Freiberg) bündelt dabei den Nachweis und Zugriff auf geowissenschaftliche Informationsressourcen, um Wissenschaftlern, Studenten und der interessierten Öffentlichkeit die Recherche nach relevanten Informationen zu erleichtern. Neben den digitalen und analogen Beständen der beiden Sondersammelgebietsbibliotheken UB Freiberg und SUB Göttingen stehen Kataloge und Datenbanken weiterer geowissenschaftlich relevanter Institutionen zur Verfügung. Derzeit weist GEO-LEO etwa 6 Millionen Informationsressourcen nach. Regelmäßig kommen weitere Datenbanken und Kataloge hinzu, die das Angebot weiter vergrößern. Mit der Publikationsplattform GEO-LEOe-docs und der integrierten Suche über verschiedenste Dokumentenserver wird der Zugang zu Volltexten erheblich verbessert und die Virtuelle Fachbibliothek für ihre Nutzer noch attraktiver.

    Description: Die Durchführung und Auswertung hydraulischer Pumversuche sind Standartaufgaben der Hydrogeologie bzw. Grundwasserhydraulik. Trotz des reichhaltigen Angebots an Fachschrifttum bestehen beim praktischen Einsatz, der Durchführung und Auswertung von Pumpversuchen erhebliche Defizite. Dies ist darauf zurückzuführen, daß einerseits die meisten Bearbeiter nur gelegentlich mit diesen Arbeiten befasst sind, andererseits das Fachschrifttum nur unzureichende Angaben zu 〉〉rein handwerklichen〈〈 Aspekten macht. Aus diesem Grunde ist der Herausgeber in der ersten Schrift dieser Reihe (GILLBRICHT, 1996) auf eine Reihe von typischen Bearbeitungsfehlern und Möglichkeiten zu ihrer Vermeidung eingegegangen. In dieser Nachfolgeschrift sollen weitere Hinweise für die praktische Durchführung und Auswertung von Pumpversuchen, insbesondere im Licht neuerer Entwicklungen, gegeben werden, sowie an Hand von Beispielen die Vorgehensweise näher erläutert werden. Alle verwendeten Beispiele stammen aus Lockergesteinsgrundwasserleitern der norddeutschen Tiefebene, überwiegend aus dem Großraum Hamburg.
