Description: The six floristic biomes in the Western Cape Province (W.C.P.), namely the Fynbos, Afromontane Forest, Thicket, Grassland, Nama and Succulent Karoo Biomes (Low and Rebelo, 1996), are not only diverse with regard to the variety of plant species and communities occurring there, but also contain a wide diversity of animal species, biogeographical zones, landscapes and natural features, both within the terrestrial and aquatic (freshwater and marine) context. In addition to the topographical diversity of the Cape Fold Mountains, the coastal zone and lowlands, and their transition into surrounding habitats, the W.C.P. experiences a wide climatic diversity too. These features have resulted in an extensive and complex diversity of habitat types which partly explain the rich biological diversity within the W.C.P. Past climatic changes on a global scale have also influenced ecological systems and processes within the W.C.P. to the extent where it is believed that vicariant speciation processes and events during global climatic changes have resulted in evolutionary driving forces that have had significant impacts on the biodiversity within the biogeographical boundaries of the W.C.P. (Vrba, 1985).

Description: Namibia is the most arid country south of the Sahara, with an economy fundamentally reliant on natural resources. The most scarce resource is water, and the main economic sectors are mining, fishing, agriculture, and wildlife-based tourism. The majority of the population live in rural areas, dependent on a wide range of natural resources. Sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity are therefore essential for the future. The question is how to achieve it? One key strategy is to assess -- and where necessary redesign -- economic incentives affecting use of natural resources. This paper illustrates the role of economic incentives in influencing the use of land-based renewable natural resources (RNR). It identify incentives which are being, or need to be, changed to promote more sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity.

Description: 1. In the past 20 years, the world has been swamped with reports, action plans and recommendations aimed at curing the ills afflicting our planet. International conferences, environmental campaigns and scientific studies have all advocated precautionary measures and remedies. 2. Humanity must take account of the amount of pressure the Earth can stand, and adopt lifestyles and development methods that respect nature’s limitations, without necessarily having to forgo the benefits of modem technologies. 3. Biosphere reserves are designed to respond to this dilemma. Their effectiveness hinges on synergy between scientists, conservation and development groups, management authorities and local communities. Such requirements are confirmed by the principles of sustainable development, which also underpin the relevant Conventions - on Biological Diversity, to Combat Desertification, on Climate Change and the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. 4. Biosphere reserves continue to be ideal experimentation sites for the conservation and sustainable management of our environment. It was to boost their ability to promote such a tool that the MAB National Committees and biosphere reserve managers gathered in Dakar (Senegal) in October 1996, and created the AfriMAB Network. 5. The first Technical Workshop for Francophone African Countries to be staged within the framework of the AfriMAB Network sought to explore specific issues involved in implementing the Seville Strategy, and to set an agenda of activities for the following two years.

Description: Renewable natural resources (RNR) are a major source of socio-economic development potential in all developing countries, if they can be conserved, developed and sustainably exploited. For strategic conservation and sustainable exploitation strategies to be implemented, a knowledge of biodiversity at various levels within these RNR has to be investigated and documented in an internationally accepted manner, and preferably as close as possible to the habitat of the resources. However, human and material resources available in developing countries are currently neither sufficiently trained nor sufficient to undertake the appropriate studies. Meanwhile, various forces continue to deplete RNR and their inherent biodiversity. An attractive approach towards study and documentation of the biodiversity of major RNR, while rapidly enhancing the capacities of developing countries, is through appropriate collaborative research and training programmes based in developing countries.

Description: South Africa is in general a dry country, where the vegetation cover is determined by its low mean annual rainfall. As a result most of the country is covered by dry savanna woodland or woodland scrub. Midgley et al (1997) define forests as being closed-canopy plant communities comprising mainly woody plants more than 5m tall and maintain that within this definition patches of forest occur within almost all southern African biomes. Most natural evergreen forests are found in areas of higher rainfall, however, in a narrow broken belt along the southern and eastern seaboard, and in the country’s mountainous regions towards the eastern borders with Swaziland and Mozambique (Figure1) (Low and Rebelo, 1996). Estimates of the area covered by closed canopy forests vary between 0.25% (Low and Rebelo, 1996) and 0.59% of the land surface (DEAT, 1997) while savanna woodlands and plantations make up between 35 and 40%, and 1.4% respectively (Shackleton and Mander, 2000; Owen and van der Zel, 2000). There are approximately 420,000 ha of indigenous closed forest (about 300 000 ha enclosed in protected areas), 32-40 million ha woodlands; and 1.5 million ha of plantation forests.

Description: Coastal lagoons form an integral part of marine fisheries and provide important spawning and nursery grounds for many fish species. The economic contributions of lagoon fisheries have not been given adequate consideration by fisheries authorities. Ghana's 550-km coastline includes over 90lagoons. These lagoons and their wetlands provide valuable products and services, which include supporting the fisheries, absorbing floodwaters and protecting biodiversity. They also serve as roosting, nesting and feeding sites for many species of birds. Through the support of the World Bank and the Global Environmental Facility, Ghana has designated five coastal wetland areas as Ramsar sites due to their importance as fishing areas and as roosting, nesting and feeding sites for waterbirds. These are the Muni-Pomadze Lagoon, the Densu Delta, and the Sakumo, Songhor and Keta Lagoons. The Ghana Coastal Wetlands Management Project (GCWMP) was initiated under the aus-pkes of the Ghana Wildlife Department to undertake studies for the sustained management of the resources in these Ramsar sites. The management of lagoon fisheries depends also on understanding the socioeconomic nature of the fisheries, biological knowledge about the resources and capture characteristics of the fishery.

Description: Tropical forest ecosystems have multiple functions and therefore are great significance for the well-being of people. It is widely acknowledged that forests and trees simultaneously provide a wide range of socio-economic and environmental benefits and values to humankind. They deserve conservation and wise use for the benefit of rural people who are dependent on these forests and for the benefit of humanity in general. Unfortunately, the use of tropical forests has been undertaken with little care about their potential to fulfil many functions and also about their future.

Description: Mounting concern about the impacts of human activities on marine and coastal biodiversity is reflected in numerous international, regional and national policies. The past twenty years in particular have seen a rapid increase in the number of international instruments aimed at addressing the threats to marine and coastal biodiversity, and protecting, understanding and using marine resources sustainably (see Box 1). The most comprehensive and significant of these is the legally binding United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Signed at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in 1992, the treaty came into force in December 1993 and has 175 member countries as parties (as of 15/1/99), including South Africa. Its three objectives, all of which have relevance to marine and coastal biodiversity, are: 1. the conservation of biological diversity; 2. the sustainable use of its components; and 3. the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources.

Description: Located in the Gulf of Guinea, with an area of 322 465 km², Cote d’Ivoire (4°30’ and 10°30’N and 2°30’ and 8°30’W) is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean in the south, Liberia in the south east, Guinea in the northwest, Burkina Faso in the north and Ghana in the east. The coast between Liberia and Ghana is about 540 km length. The country is influenced by the Monsoon (humid) and Harmattan (dry) tropical air masses. These two air masses are separated by the intertropical front that influences the local climate. The climate in southern part, including the coast, is humid tropical and characterized by a climate with four seasons: two dry seasons from November to March and from July to August and two rainy seasons from April to June and from September to October. Forests occupy more than half part of the southern part of the country. Littoral savanna vegetation is found south of the lagoons between Port-Bouet and Grand-Bassam. Pre-lagoon savanna is located north of the lagoons in the dense forest of the south. The littoral zone contains different natural habitats, including five lagoon systems, closed lagoons, swamp forests, mangrove forests (mainly by Rhizophora racemosa and Avicennia africana) The continental shelf, with an area of 12 000 km², has two types of bottom sediments, sandy bottoms in the eastern part and rocky bottoms in the western part. The continental shelf is narrow, with a width that varies between 9 and 18 miles, with a mean of 13 miles. Different types of human activities are conducted in the region, notably agriculture, power generation, timber exploitation, sand extraction, and various industries (e.g. petrol and gas). Several ports are located in this region, including the political capital Abidjan.

Description: This study focuses on assessing the state of population distribution, land cover distribution, biodiversity hotspots and protected areas in global coastal zones. The coastal zone is defined as land within 100 km of the coastline. This study attempts to answer such questions as: how crowded are the coastal zones, what is the pattern of land cover distribution in these areas, how many of these areas are designated as protected areas, and what is the state of the biodiversity hotspots. This study uses globally consistent and comprehensive geo-spatial data sets based on remote sensing and other sources. The application of modern Geographic Information System (GIS) layering methods and consistent data sets has made it possible to identify and quantify selected coastal zones environmental issues and their interconnections. It is expected that such information provide a scientific basis for global coastal zones management and assist in policy formulations at the national and international levels.

Description: Coral reef ecosystems are under increasing natural and anthropogenic pressures, despite their ecological significance and economic importance to mankind. The majority of land based activities and direct human use are borne by these shallow water areas, which interface between land masses and the open oceans. The objective of this paper is to give an overview of the value of coral reef ecosystems and the anthropogenic threats imposed on them, as well as to examine the interactions of coral reef ecological linkages to other coastal and marine habitats and the future of coral reef ecosystems. It is suggested that management measures for the preservation of reef systems must link coastal and marine systems, pay attention to socio-economic factors as well as institutional and legal ones, employ a cooperative approach, and be based on scientific advice.

Description: With a very high forest cover (over 80%) and low population density (below 5 inhbts/km2), Gabon is still a forest biodiversity rich country. Gabon's forests are amongst the richest in Africa in terms of botanical diversity and endemism for example, 22% of plants described in the Flora of Gabon are endemic and the forests of Gabon have more plant species (estimated at 8000 species) than all of the forests of West Africa combined. The fauna is also rich, estimated at more than 190 mammal species, including at least 20 species of monkeys, more than 600 species of birds, 70 species of reptiles and 100 species of amphibians. About 35,000 gorillas and 64,000 chimpanzees dwell in Gabon forests and elephants number between 60,000 and 74,000 individuals. The network of protected area seems adequate in size (about 10% of the territory) but some important ecosystems are still inadequately protected and most of the protected areas are understaffed and under funded. Forest biodiversity loss is probably not critical so far but hunting for bushmeat, often but not always linked to opening of forest areas by logging companies is a serious problem. Gabon is Party to several Conventions (Biological Diversity, CITES, RAMSAR, London, etc.) and a member of the International Tropical Timber Organisation and of the African Timber Organisation. The civil society is emerging but remains fairly weak and is essentially represented by small NGOs developed in urban areas. It has only a small influence on national level decisions about forest and biodiversity. Forest and environment sectors have governed by two major laws that are still lacking a proper set of implementation texts though they were passed in 1982 for the Forestry law and in 1993 for the Environment law. These texts have been developed without integrating requirements from the CBD and without real cross-sectoral integration. The forestry law is currently revised but the new text (likely to pass in 2001) although better than the previous one because the implementation decrees are already written does not really integrate CBD concerns. Gabon has initiated several national planning processes. The NFAP was initiated with the support and under the push of the donor community (especially France) while the NEAP and NASP-BD were essentially a result of the signing of the CBD and were funded by GEF. These various planning exercises have been conducted in parallel without real integration and communication. It seems however that the situation is now improving as in December 1999, a Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Unit (CPSE) was created within the Ministry, under the co-ordination of the General Secretary, in order to: (i) ensure the follow-up and the implementation of the main conclusions and recommendations of NEAP and NFAP, (ii) create a coherent institutional framework within the Ministry, (iii) assure appropriate information transfer to institutional and non institutional stakeholders of the sector, (iv) prepare the financial mechanisms to support the sector. A Letter of General Policy is also prepared by the Ministry of Forestry and Environment to summarize the results of the national exercises of environmental planning (NFAP, NEAP, NSAPBD) and the orientation of the new Forestry Code in terms of policies, operational priorities and axes of implementation for the development of the forestry and environment sectors. This seems a serious effort to have a better integration of environmental and forestry issues. Nevertheless, this is happening as all planning exercises are completed and validated. Some progresses have been made thanks to a reorganisation of the agencies involved in environmental and forestry planning exercises but it remains to be seen if implementation and integration of the new legislations become a reality.

Description: This text is a comparative study of biodiversity conservation practices and policies in Mozambique and Brazil. After a brief discussion of the concept of biodiversity and a general panorama of biodiversity in Mozambique, the author presents a detailed study of the Special Reserve of Maputo in Mozambique. It stresses the specific difficulties faced by conservation in a post war period and the problems to implement objectives, like those of a sustainable development and a participation of local communities, other than the direct protection of elephants which was the main reason for the creation of that reserve. Then, there is a rapid presentation of biodiversity in Brazil, particularly in the State of Ceara where are located the Ecological Station of Aiuba and the Area of Environmental Protection of Baturite which are described. Finally, the author concludes by stressing the importance of the plain participation of local populations and the recognition of their knowledge by the authorities of conservation areas to ensure a real conservation of biodiversity and fully meet the necessities of local dwellers, specially in a country like Brazil where conservation areas are already numerous.

Description: The Western Cape Province (W.C.P.) of South Africa, one of nine provinces forming the country, is generally regarded in South African terms as being “poor” with respect to the number of its mammals when compared to the other eight provinces. This misconception has its origin in the fact that the Western Cape, essentially a winter rainfall region, lies adjacent to one of the richest spots in the world in terms of mammalian diversity, namely the summer rainfall region of the rest of South Africa. In fact only when compared with the rest of our own country can the Western Cape be regarded as having a “poor” mammofauna in terms of biodiversity. However, some of the other Western Cape vertebrate and many of the invertebrate groups do reflect higher levels of biodiversity, as do the plants; and almost all groups show higher levels of endemism. The misconception regarding mammalian diversity in the Western Cape is partially exacerbated by the relatively low biomass mainly due to the low nutrient status which is fairly characteristic of the fynbos biome. The historic distribution of the larger mammals within the W.C.P. is probably better documented than that of any other faunal group in South Africa (see Skead, 1980; Skead, 1987; and Rookmaker, 1989) and the role that mammals played in the development of nature conservation in the W.C.P. is well summarized by Hey (1977).

Description: In 1997, IUCN-The World Conservation Union, with the financial support of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Co-operation and Development, initiated a project to examine the relationship between the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the rules of international trade–those administered by the World Trade Organisation (WTO), in particular. The project was motivated by a widely shared concern that the aims of the CBD, which are essentially to conserve and equitably distribute the benefits of the environment, might be undermined by the WTO, which aims at the liberalisation of trade. Liberalised trade has the potential to integrate economies, regionally and globally, in mutually beneficial ways. But some observers are concerned that it may do so at a cost of impairing the environment and amplifying disparities in wealth, much of which, in poorer nations, is disproportionately represented in endowments of natural resources. Other commentators have claimed to locate synergistic potential, suggesting, for example, that trade law’s anti-subsidy disciplines might be conscripted into the campaign against environmental abuses such as overfishing.

Description: Biotic surveys and a comprehensive literature review were undertaken to improve our knowledge of the biodiversity of Bioko and mainland Equatorial Guinea. Bird and mammal surveys were conducted on the mainland, and herpetological and arthropod surveys on Bioko, providing new information on species distributions and abundance. On the mainland, five areas within the proposed preserve system for Equatorial Guinea; Reserva Natural de Rio Campo, Parque Nacional de Los Altos de Nsork, Parque Nacional de Monte Alen (including Montes Mitra), and Reserva Natural del Estuario del Muni, were examined. On Bioko, the two proposed reserve areas, Parque Nacional de Pico Basilé Reserva Científica de la Caldera de Luba, as well as some lowland areas near Luba were examined. Additionally, genetic data were gathered for birds, and combined with previous data from Cameroon, to assess patterns of genetic differentiation within and across mountains in Cameroon and Bioko. We recorded only one species of bird (Malimbus scutatus) that had not been previously reported for mainland Equatorial Guinea, and no new mammals. However, valuable new information on bird and mammal distributions within Rio Muni are presented. In addition, several species and one genus of amphibians were recorded on Bioko for the first time. Approximately a third of the arthropods, including 372 species of spiders were previously unrecorded, and many are unidentifiable from the literature and may be new species. At least three endemic species of Carabid beetles were also discovered. Conservation implications are discussed in each chapter, and in a separate section (Part V) devoted to conservation recommendations

Description: Renewable natural resources constitute major sources for socioeconomic development of all developing countries, if they can be con-served, developed and sustainably exploited. For its strategic conservation and sustainable exploitation, biodiversity has to be investigated and documented at various levels and in an internationally accepted manner. However, the human and material resources available in the developing countries are insufficient to under-take the necessary studies, while various forces continue to degrade or erode biodiversity; The obvious solution is through collaboration in research and training.

Description: The Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) is designed to safeguard the world's threatened biodiversity hotspots in developing countries. It is a joint initiative of Conservation International (CI), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Government of Japan, the MacArthur Foundation and the World Bank. CEPF supports projects in hotspots, areas with more than 60 percent of the Earth’s terrestrial species in just 1.4 percent of its land surface. A fundamental purpose of CEPF is to ensure that civil society is engaged in efforts to conserve biodiversity in the hotspots. An additional purpose is to ensure that those efforts complement existing strategies and frameworks established by local, regional and national governments. CEPF aims to promote working alliances among community groups, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), government, academic institutions and the private sector, combining unique capacities and eliminating duplication of efforts for a comprehensive approach to conservation. CEPF is unique among funding mechanisms in that it focuses on biological areas rather than political boundaries and examines conservation threats on a corridor-wide basis to identify and support a regional, rather than a national, approach to achieving conservation outcomes. Corridors are determined through a process of identifying important species, site and corridor-level conservation outcomes for the hotspot. CEPF targets transboundary cooperation when areas rich in biological value straddle national borders, or in areas where a regional approach will be more effective than a national approach.

Description: This paper investigates the question of what influence human beings have had on biodiversity in the region of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. A historical analysis has been made of human impact on local ecosystems and species accompanied by statistics on the reduction of habitats and systems caused by urbanisation, cultivation, silviculture and state dams. The major causes of biodiversity loss are identified as being habitat destruction or modification and extractive utilisation. The most important problem is that the government of South Africa does not have an effective environmental management system to ensure wise decision-making. The result has been sectoral ministries empowered with the dual role of both exploiting and preserving natural resources. In 1989 guidelines for Integrated Environmental Management were produced by the Department of Environmental Affairs with an environmental impact assessment procedure. However, the procedure is weak because cumulative and synergistic impacts of development are poorly considered, because the land-use planning framework at the regional and even subregional scale is incomplete, and because there is generally poor understanding of how various land-uses impact on biodiversity. What is more, the procedure hasn't been given force of law due to the worry that the country cannot afford expensive assessment procedures when economic growth is the priority.

Description: consumption needs of the population, it remains difficult to assure the continuity of national resources or to provide for protection of nature. The Convention of Biological Diversity has identified the need for Parties to integrate biodiversity with other sectors of the economy and civil society. Given that EIA is the only instrument available to ensure that consideration is accorded to environmental aspects in economic development plans, it is important that EIA should fully incorporate biodiversity considerations, to ensure that natural resources are taken into account in the development process.

Description: In West Africa (between Ivory Coast and Sénégal), estuarine environments vary from lagoons to high discharge rivers to inverse hypersaline estuaries. This results in a high diversity of estuarine fish species, with an important turnover and a core of ubiquitous species. The species richness of a given estuary depends on the combination of hydrological factors (marine or freshwater dominance) and biogeography (continental biogeographic regions). The catch rate is higher in lagoons and inverse estuaries than in normal estuaries, which can be explained by the predominance of small juveniles in the latter. Clupeids are the most abundant fishes all over the region, but different systems have different dominant species. Assessing the functioning of West-African estuaries provides useful comparisons to Asian estuarine systems.

Description: The coastline of the island of Mauritius is 322 km long and is almost completely surrounded by fringing coral reefs enclosing a lagoon area totaling 243 km. The volcanic nature of the island's origin, the existence of coral reefs and the access to the lagoons of more than 50 rivers and rivulets, determine the diversity of the coastal habitats, flora and fauna. The island has several sandy beaches, protected bays and calm lagoons - factors that have favoured a prosperous tourism industry. Economically, the coastal zone is by far the most valuable segment of the Mauritian territory. Located here are the tourist facilities, secondary residences, ports, fisheries infrastructure and public beaches. Figure 3 gives the changes in coastal land distribution from 1990 - 2000. In this zone billions of rupees are being invested in the form of hotels, infrastructure, water sport facilities, biodiversity conservation, coastal protection and coastal developments in general. Environmental problems which affect the coastal zone are therefore of a very high priority. (Ministry of Environment, 2002)

Description: Prior to the 1960s the biota of the western Indian Ocean inshore marine habitats received scant attention from taxonomists resulting in a poorly known flora and fauna. Fortunately, over the last 40 years there have been considerable developments in the study of marine biodiversity in this region, both from regional scientists and by those based at institutions in Europe and elsewhere. This paper reviews the current status of taxonomic knowledge of the marine biodiversity of the western Indian Ocean, focusing on the macroflora and macrofauna of the intertidal and shallow subtidal environments. The taxonomy of many of the smaller and particularly the softer-bodied invertebrate taxa remains a challenge to specialists, and as a result these taxa continue to be inadequately known from this region. Such groups include sponges, ctenophores, octocorals, polychaetes and tunicates. There is however, considerably greater knowledge on the taxonomy and diversity of groups such as coastal plants, mangroves, seagrasses, macroalgae, scleractinian corals, most crustacean taxa, molluscs, echinoderms, fishes, reptiles and marine mammals.....

Description: Species mapping is a useful conservation tool for predicting patterns of biological diversity, or identifying geographical areas of conservation significance. Mapping can also improve our understanding of the appropriateness of habitat areas for individual species. We developed a new model, PREDICT, for mapping habitat suitability of plant and animal species from incomplete field survey data. PREDICT is a statistical program written for use within a GIS (geographic information system). It produces images and statistics that assess the potential of unstudied areas for wildlife for which presence/absence data and basic habitat information are available. Suitability for a target species is determined within surveyed and non-surveyed squares by a form of weights of evidence. The program measures the degree of association between habitat factors and presence/absence of target species by means of chi-squared tests. The overall suitability weighting of each square, as the sum of all individual habitat factor weightings, is finally displayed in maps depicting areas of highly suitable, suitable, unsuitable and highly unsuitable habitat. The program is corroborated with endemic bird distributions in the island of Bioko, West Africa. Statistical relations between vegetation, rainfall and landscape features of the island and the predicted location of 9 endemic bird taxa are presented. Final confirmation of the accuracy of predictions of the studied bird taxa will ensue from future field observations. However, in a series of misclassification tests of the program, actual distribution detection rate was in excess of 90%. The use of PREDICT can guide investigations of little known species in remote areas and provide a practical solution to identify areas of high rare species diversity in need of conservation.

Description: The Kenyan coastline is about 600 km in length and forms part of the western border of the Indian Ocean. It has an almost continuous fringing coral reef usually running parallel to the coast. Kenya’s territorial sea and Exclusive Economic Zone extend 12 nm and 200 nm respectively, with the total area of EEZ being 118 km2. The Kenyan coast runs in a southwesterly direction from the Somalian border in the north 1o41’S to 4o40’S at the border with Tanzania. Climate and weather systems on the Kenyan coast are dominated by the two distinct monsoon periods. From November to March, the north-east monsoon dominates and is comparatively dry. End of March to September the south-east monsoon dominates bringing heavy rains. Mean annual total rainfall ranges from 508 mm to1016 mm. Relative humidity is comparatively high all year round reaching its peak during the wet months of April and July.

Description: Between 15-26 May more than a thousand government delegates and non-government observers will gather in Nairobi for the Fifth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP5) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (the CBD). One important agenda item that will be under discussion is the use of incentive measures to support the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. This is not the first time that incentives, and especially economic incentives, have been identified as a priority tool for biodiversity conservation. Meetings relating to the implementation of the CBD, at global, regional and national levels, have called repeatedly for the identification, development and use of economic incentives for biodiversity, and for the documentation and sharing of experiences relating to their use.

Description: Nigeria has a coastline of 853 km, a maritime area of 46,500 km2 and an exclusive economic zone of 210,900 km2. The Nigerian coastal area is hot and humid, with an annual temperature range between 26 and 34oC, and the highest temperatures occurring during the dry season (November to March). The total annual rainfall averages between 350 and 600 centimeters. More than 80 percent of the rain falls during the rainy season (April to October) when tropical storm conditions are frequent. Rainfall is usually heavy and occasionally lasts for over 24 hours. Rainfall of about 50mm/hour between July and August are common and results in flash floods. The predominant wind is the rain bearing southwest trade wind from the Atlantic Ocean. During the short dry period, the dust laden north east dry wind from the Sahara desert reaches the coastal areas, producing hazy conditions (Ibe et al. 1985). The Nigerian intertidal mangrove swamps cover an area of about 5,590 square kilometres (Allen 1965). The swamps are separated from the sea by barrier-bar islands that are usually broken by tidal channels. The Niger delta area, which has a flourishing mangrove ecosystem, was formed by long and continuous interactions of sediment laden Niger River water and coastal processes, creating beach-ridges, barrier islands, a fresh water floodplain and brackish mangrove swamp. This coastal habitat is interrupted by a series of estuaries, lagoons and embayments. The total brackish water habitat is estimated as 12,900 km2. The mangroves, wetlands and inter-tidal systems occur in saline soil subject to tidal inundation and occupy a total area of almost 1 million hectares (Okigbo 1984, FAO 1981). Fishing is the main occupation of the coastal communities, with various types of gears being employed. Fishing is conducted in creeks, rivers, estuaries, mudflats, near-shore and offshore. Commercial fishing supports about 440 trawlers, with about three quarters of the fleet targeting the shrimp resources. The mangrove plants and associated halophytic plants are used for building, extraction of tannin; construction works, curing of fish, and other fishing implements. Mineral resources in the coastal and marine waters include petroleum, with an oil reserve of about 21 billion barrels and gas reserve estimated at more than 11 trillion cubic feet. Current production levels are at about 1.9 million barrels of crude oil and 200,000 barrels of gas condensate per day. The current natural gas production is 3,400 million cubic feet per day in the form of associated gas, of which about 340 million is marketed in the domestic market, 340 million re-injected and 2,720 million cubic feet is flared daily. Sand and gravel are exploited onshore and offshore, in the riverbed, lagoons, estuaries and beaches. Millions of cubic meters of sand are dredged annually during oil exploration and exploitation, as well as for the construction industry. Most of the sand mined is used for reclamation of swampy areas, in the block-making industry and construction work.

Description: Blooms of toxic or harmful microalgae, commonly called "red tides," represent a significant and expanding threat to human health and fisheries resources throughout the United States and the world. Ecological, aesthetic, and public health impacts include: mass mortalities of wild and farmed fish and shellfish, human intoxication and death from the consumption of contaminated shellfish or fish, alterations of marine food webs through adverse effects on larvae and other life history stages of commercial fish species, the noxious smell and appearance of algae accumulated in nearshore waters or deposited on beaches, and mass mortalities of marine mammals, seabirds, and other animals. In this report, we provide an estimate of the economic impacts of HABs in the United States from events where such impacts were measurable with a fair degree of confidence during the interval 1987-92. The total economic impact averaged $49 million per year, with public health impacts representing the largest component (45 percent). Commercial fisheries impacts were the next largest (37 percent of the total), while recreation/tourism accounted for 13 percent, and monitoring/management impacts 4 percent. These estimates are highly conservative, as many economic costs or impacts from HABs could not be estimated.

Description: We show that inferences of competence based solely on facial appearance predicted the outcomes of U.S. congressional elections better than chance (e.g., 68.8% of the Senate races in 2004) and also were linearly related to the margin of victory. These inferences were specific to competence and occurred within a 1-second exposure to the faces of the candidates. The findings suggest that rapid, unreflective trait inferences can contribute to voting choices, which are widely assumed to be based primarily on rational and deliberative considerations.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Todorov, Alexander -- Mandisodza, Anesu N -- Goren, Amir -- Hall, Crystal C -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2005 Jun 10;308(5728):1623-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Psychology, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ 08544, USA. atodorov@princeton.edu〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15947187" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Global change will alter the supply of ecosystem services that are vital for human well-being. To investigate ecosystem service supply during the 21st century, we used a range of ecosystem models and scenarios of climate and land-use change to conduct a Europe-wide assessment. Large changes in climate and land use typically resulted in large changes in ecosystem service supply. Some of these trends may be positive (for example, increases in forest area and productivity) or offer opportunities (for example, "surplus land" for agricultural extensification and bioenergy production). However, many changes increase vulnerability as a result of a decreasing supply of ecosystem services (for example, declining soil fertility, declining water availability, increasing risk of forest fires), especially in the Mediterranean and mountain regions.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Schroter, Dagmar -- Cramer, Wolfgang -- Leemans, Rik -- Prentice, I Colin -- Araujo, Miguel B -- Arnell, Nigel W -- Bondeau, Alberte -- Bugmann, Harald -- Carter, Timothy R -- Gracia, Carlos A -- de la Vega-Leinert, Anne C -- Erhard, Markus -- Ewert, Frank -- Glendining, Margaret -- House, Joanna I -- Kankaanpaa, Susanna -- Klein, Richard J T -- Lavorel, Sandra -- Lindner, Marcus -- Metzger, Marc J -- Meyer, Jeannette -- Mitchell, Timothy D -- Reginster, Isabelle -- Rounsevell, Mark -- Sabate, Santi -- Sitch, Stephen -- Smith, Ben -- Smith, Jo -- Smith, Pete -- Sykes, Martin T -- Thonicke, Kirsten -- Thuiller, Wilfried -- Tuck, Gill -- Zaehle, Sonke -- Zierl, Barbel -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2005 Nov 25;310(5752):1333-7. Description: The invasion of Europe by the western corn rootworm, North America's most destructive corn pest, is ongoing and represents a serious threat to European agriculture. Because this pest was initially introduced in Central Europe, it was believed that subsequent outbreaks in Western Europe originated from this area. Using model-based Bayesian analyses of the genetic variability of the western corn rootworm, we demonstrate that this belief is false: There have been at least three independent introductions from North America during the past two decades. This result raises questions about changing circumstances that have enabled a sudden burst of transatlantic introductions.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Miller, Nicholas -- Estoup, Arnaud -- Toepfer, Stefan -- Bourguet, Denis -- Lapchin, Laurent -- Derridj, Sylvie -- Kim, Kyung Seok -- Reynaud, Philippe -- Furlan, Lorenzo -- Guillemaud, Thomas -- New York, N.Y. -- Science.

Description: We addressed the question of bottom-up versus top-down control of marine ecosystem trophic interactions by using annual fish catch data and satellite-derived (SeaWiFS) chlorophyll a measurements for the continental margin of western North America. Findings reveal a marked alongshore variation in retained primary production that is highly correlated with the alongshore variation in resident fish yield. The highest productivity occurs off the coasts of Washington and southern British Columbia. Zooplankton data for coastal British Columbia confirm strong bottom-up trophic linkages between phytoplankton, zooplankton, and resident fish, extending to regional areas as small as 10,000 square kilometers.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Ware, Daniel M -- Thomson, Richard E -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2005 May 27;308(5726):1280-4. Description: The Karoo basin of South Africa exposes a succession of Upper Permian to Lower Triassic terrestrial strata containing abundant terrestrial vertebrate fossils. Paleomagnetic/magnetostratigraphic and carbon-isotope data allow sections to be correlated across the basin. With this stratigraphy, the vertebrate fossil data show a gradual extinction in the Upper Permian punctuated by an enhanced extinction pulse at the Permian-Triassic boundary interval, particularly among the dicynodont therapsids, coinciding with negative carbon-isotope anomalies.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Ward, Peter D -- Botha, Jennifer -- Buick, Roger -- De Kock, Michiel O -- Erwin, Douglas H -- Garrison, Geoffrey H -- Kirschvink, Joseph L -- Smith, Roger -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2005 Feb 4;307(5710):709-14. Description: Many large animal species have a high risk of extinction. This is usually thought to result simply from the way that species traits associated with vulnerability, such as low reproductive rates, scale with body size. In a broad-scale analysis of extinction risk in mammals, we find two additional patterns in the size selectivity of extinction risk. First, impacts of both intrinsic and environmental factors increase sharply above a threshold body mass around 3 kilograms. Second, whereas extinction risk in smaller species is driven by environmental factors, in larger species it is driven by a combination of environmental factors and intrinsic traits. Thus, the disadvantages of large size are greater than generally recognized, and future loss of large mammal biodiversity could be far more rapid than expected.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Cardillo, Marcel -- Mace, Georgina M -- Jones, Kate E -- Bielby, Jon -- Bininda-Emonds, Olaf R P -- Sechrest, Wes -- Orme, C David L -- Purvis, Andy -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2005 Aug 19;309(5738):1239-41. Description: The serpentinite-hosted Lost City hydrothermal field is a remarkable submarine ecosystem in which geological, chemical, and biological processes are intimately interlinked. Reactions between seawater and upper mantle peridotite produce methane- and hydrogen-rich fluids, with temperatures ranging from 〈40 degrees to 90 degrees C at pH 9 to 11, and carbonate chimneys 30 to 60 meters tall. A low diversity of microorganisms related to methane-cycling Archaea thrive in the warm porous interiors of the edifices. Macrofaunal communities show a degree of species diversity at least as high as that of black smoker vent sites along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, but they lack the high biomasses of chemosynthetic organisms that are typical of volcanically driven systems.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Kelley, Deborah S -- Karson, Jeffrey A -- Fruh-Green, Gretchen L -- Yoerger, Dana R -- Shank, Timothy M -- Butterfield, David A -- Hayes, John M -- Schrenk, Matthew O -- Olson, Eric J -- Proskurowski, Giora -- Jakuba, Mike -- Bradley, Al -- Larson, Ben -- Ludwig, Kristin -- Glickson, Deborah -- Buckman, Kate -- Bradley, Alexander S -- Brazelton, William J -- Roe, Kevin -- Elend, Mitch J -- Delacour, Adelie -- Bernasconi, Stefano M -- Lilley, Marvin D -- Baross, John A -- Summons, Roger E -- Sylva, Sean P -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2005 Mar 4;307(5714):1428-34.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉School of Oceanography, University of Washington, Seattle, WA 98195, USA. kelley@ocean.washington.edu〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15746419" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
