    Notes: Abstract Mathematical models for pressure swing adsorption (PSA) processes essentially require the simultaneous solutions of mass, heat and momentum balance equations for each step of the process using appropriate boundary conditions for the steps. The key model input variables needed for estimating the separation performance of the process are the multicomponent adsorption equilibria, kinetics and heats of adsorption for the system of interest. A very detailed model of an adiabatic Skarstrom PSA cycle for production of high purity methane from a ethylene-methane bulk mixture is developed to study the sensitivity of the process performance to the input variables. The adsorption equilibria are described by the heterogeneous Toth model which accounts for variations of isosteric heats of adsorption of the components with adsorbate loading. A linear driving force model is used to describe the kinetics. The study shows that small errors in the heats of adsorption of the components can severely alter the overall performance of the process (methane recovery and productivity). The adsorptive mass transfer coefficients of the components also must be known fairly accurately in order to obtain precise separation performance.

    Notes: Abstract The stabilities of the solid superacids H3Mo12O40, H3PW12O40, H4SiMo12O40 and H4SiW12O40 in aqueous solution have been measured at various values of pH by use of ion chromatographic analyses. The aforementioned acids are completely decomposed at values of pH, 4.0, 5.2, 7.0 and 11.0, respectively. The stabilities in aqueous solution with respect to pH follow the order H4SiW12O40 〉 H3PW12O40 〉 H4SiMo12O40 〉 H3PMo12O40.

    Notes: Abstract A method has been developed for direct measurement of reaction rates in a continuously operated slurry (CST-) reactor. In contrast to the usual procedure in a two-liquid-phase system the reactor contains only one liquid phase, an aqueous zinc chloride solution in which a ruthenium lanthanoxide catalyst is suspended. The selectivity of benzene hydrogenation with respect to cyclohexene is higher when the new one-liquid-phase procedure is applied. With decreasing degree of benzene conversion the selectivity with respect to cyclohexene approaches 100%. The conclusion is that cyclohexane is formed only by consecutive hydrogenation of cyclohexene.

    Notes: Abstract To determine whether there is a relationship between the composition of soil organic matter and the activity of the soil microbial biomass, the composition of the organic matter in 12 typical arable soils in Northwest Germany was investigated by wet chemical analysis and CPMAS cross polarization magic angle spinning 13C-NMR spectroscopy. The data were correlated with the microbial biomass as estimated by substrate-induced respiration. A strong correlation between the microbial biomass and alkylic C compounds was observed (r=-0.960***). Recalcitrant substances were enriched in this fraction, which were classified as humic acids according to the wet chemical procedure. The microbial decomposition of these humic acids is probably retarded, due to their chemical structure and/or physical bonding, when the soil microbial biomass activity is limited.

    Notes: Abstract Proton-activated currents were examined in patch-clamp recordings from embryonic chick motoneurons. Rapid application of protons evoked a large inward current that peaked and then decayed, presumably due to channel inactivation. A pH shift from 7.4 to 7.1 was sufficient to evoke detectable currents. The shift from pH 7.4 required for half-maximal current amplitude (EC50) was to pH 6.8. In single-channel recordings, activation was achieved within 6 ms at pH 7. The average channel open time was 1.4 ms; the closed-state time constants were 1.0 and 6.2 ms. At pH 6.5, the single-channel conductance was 22 pS, and the reversal potential was similar to the calculated Na+ equilibrium potential. Current amplitude declined by 49% following addition of Ni2+ and increased by 58% as Ca2+ was lowered from 2 to 0.1 mM. Inactivation time constants ranged from 90 to 200 ms as pH varied from 6 to 7; these values did not depend on membrane potential. The reactivation time constant was 22 s. Proton- and glutamate-activated currents summated. Thus, transient decreases in extracellular pH can evoke large inward currents that decay rapidly and reactivate slowly. These currents may occur under pathological conditions that affect extracellular pH.

    Notes: Abstract Phosphorus-doped aluminium oxide thin films were deposited in a flow-type ALE reactor from AlCl3, H2O and from either P2O5 or trimethyl-phosphate. Structural information of the films was obtained from Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra. Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS) was used to quantitatively determine the composition of the films. The P/Al intensity ratios calculated from X-ray fluorescence (XRF) results were in a linear relation with the P/Al concentration ratios calculated from RBS results. For comparison, the intensity ratios of the phosphorus peak (P=O) at about 1250 cm−1 and the aluminium peak (Al-O) at about 950 cm−1 were determined from the IR absorption spectra. The calibration of FTIR peak intensities was done by plotting the intensity ratios of phosphorus and aluminium peaks against the P/Al concentration ratios measured by RBS. FTIR gave also a linear calibration curve with RBS but the method is less suitable for routine analysis of P/Al ratio than XRF.

    Notes: Abstract We have prepared toughened, porous, aminated polystyrene membranes that undergo an increase in reflectance as the pH increases from 6.8 to 8.0. Vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC) is copolymerized with divinylbenzene (DVB) in the presence of a toughening agent, Kraton G1652, a styrene-ethylene, butylene-styrene triblock copolymer, and a porogenic solvent, xylene/ dodecane. The optimum formulation for sensing is 2% DVB (mol DVB/mol VBC), 2% Kraton (g Kraton/g VBC) and 40% (v/v) 2∶1 xylene: dodecane. Benzoyl peroxide is used as the initiator. The components are partially polymerized at 85 °C to a viscosity of 600–800 centipoise. The polymerization is then stopped by reducing the temperature. A drop of the partially polymerized solution is confined between two microscope slides and the polymerization reaction is completed. The resulting membrane is then swollen in 1,4-dioxan and reacted with diethanolamine. These membranes have been incorporated into a pH sensor based on changes in reflected intensity measured through a bifurcated bundle of twenty unbuffered 50/55 core/cladding glass-on-glass optical fibers with numerical apertures of 0.57. The resulting sensor is stable and requires inexpensive optical components, a red-emitting LED as the source and a silicon photodiode as the detector.

    Notes: Abstract Eighteen lakes were added to a published training set of 46 British Columbia (BC) lakes in order to expand the original range of total phosphorus (TP) concentrations. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was used to analyze the relationship between diatom assemblages and environmental variables. Specific conductivity and [TP] each explained significant (P≤0.05) directions of variance in the distribution of the diatoms. The relationship between diatom assemblages and [TP] was sufficiently strong to warrant the development of a weighted-averaging (WA) regression and calibration model that can be used to infer past trophic status from fossil diatom assemblages. The relationship between observed and inferred [TP] was not improved by the addition of more eutrophic lakes, however the [TP] range and the number of taxa used in the transfer function are now superior to the original model. Diatom species assemblages changed very little in lakes with TP concentrations greater than 85 µg 1−1, so we document the development of a model containing lakes with TP≤85 µg 1−1. The updated model uses 59 training lakes and covers a range of species optima from 6 to 41.9 µg 1−1 TP, and a total of 150 diatom taxa. The updated inference model provided a more realistic reconstruction of the anthropogenic history of a highly eutrophic BC lake. The model can now be used to infer past nutrient conditions in other BC lakes in order to assess changes in trophic status.

    Notes: Abstract After three years of a research network project on mineral phosphorus fertilization including five experimental fields located in Europe the first results are discussed. Crop response was very significant to TSP application in the alluvial calcareous polder soil of Netherlands, and in the brown silty acid soil of Scotland, both having a low level of P availability and a high fixation capacity. In the alluvial sandy loam on chalk in England, a response was observed to the first fertilization level equal to the previous crop export of phosphorus. In the brown sandy-silty soil on sand in Germany the highest rate of TSP led to a response in the third year. No effect on the final yields was observed in the brown silt loam of Belgium characterised by a textural B horizon with a high P fixation capacity. The critical values for phosphorus fertilization are discussed as the amount of P needed to maintain a target value of soil phosphorus. Concerning the supply of the different soils, no balance was reached in the Dutch and Scottish soils, a steady state was reached in the English soil with the return of the previous crop removal and the critical value for P was lower than the return of the previous crop export in the German and Belgian soils. According to the eight methods of P determination compared in the network, the P contents in the plow layer were raised in the soils of Netherlands, England and Scotland. They remained at the same level or fluctuated depending on the soil testing methods in Germany and in Belgium. High correlations exist between the different methods used in routine analysis, except for the calcium cloride and calcium acetate lactate method. Annual fluctuations in the soil P were detected at different depths depending on analytical methods and need further research.

    Notes: Abstract To study the titanium effect on P nutrition, a greenhouse experiment withCapsicum annuum L., cv. Bunejo plants growing under differential P fertilization was conducted. All the plants were grown under identical conditions and they only differred in the P fertilization and in Ti supply. Plant biomass production of the Ti-untreated plants was affected by the diminution of the P-feed, but the plants growing under the lowest P supply did not showed any deficiency symptom during the crop cycle. All the Ti-treated plots showed a significative increase of the plant biomass against their corresponding untreated references. The biomass enhancement was mainly caused by the increase of the fruit yield with an absolute enhancement of 62% in the plants growing under the lowest P feed, and of 45% in the plants with a complete P support.

    Notes: Abstract The last three decades, pig breeding has evolved towards a specialised, large scaled, land independent bio-industry in the province of West-Flanders. Subsequently, in certain regions, very high amounts of liquid pig manure are produced each year. This pig slurry is used as a fertilizer at a rate which very often exceeds normal agricultural practices. Because of the nonequilibrium between the phosphorus crop requirements and the P-inputs, phosphates accumulate in the soil. However, the phosphate sorption capacity of a soil is limited. Once the sorption capacity is exceeded, phosphates will start leaching through the soil profile. Since, during winter, in these areas, the groundwater table is situated at a depth of less than 1.0 m, phosphate breakthrough might take place. In the sandy loam soil region (± 1000 km2) of the province, an inventory of the P status of the soil was made. The region was sampled according to a regular grid with 2 km intervals. At random, some sample points were only 500 m apart. This resulted in a total of 296 samplings. In view of fertilizer recommendations, lactate extractable P of the plough layer (0-30 cm) was determined. A maximum value of 101 mg P 100 g−1 of air dry soil, a minimum value of 6 mg P 100 g−1 and a median value of 31 mg P 100 g−1 were found, indicating that for half of the spots monitored, the P status of the soil is high to very high. An oxalate extraction was done to investigate the phosphate saturation of the soil profile (0-90 cm). Based on a critical phosphate saturation degree of 30%, more than half of the soil profiles are phosphate saturated. Phosphate leaching at a rate higher than 0.1 mg ortho-P 1−1 at a depth of 90 cm can be expected. Therefore, a restriction of the P fertilization should be highly recommended. The geostatistical processing of the data using block kriging resulted in a spatial continuous estimate of the phosphate saturation degree. A good agreement was found between the pig density and the phosphate saturation degree of the soil profile.

    Notes: Abstract Research on nutrient losses from agricultural systems should try to relate these losses to farm characteristics. This was done for private farms in two districts in Poland. Using data from a farm survey, nutrient surpluses and Nutrient Use Efficiency (NUE, defined as the ratio of outgoing and incoming nutrients) were calculated for nitrogen and phosphorus. Both nutrient surplus and NUE are relatively high. A model was developed to estimate surpluses and NUE from farm characteristics like location, farm size, fertilizer application level, animal density, grass production and sugar beet or potato area. The results of the model are satisfying for nutrient surplus (R2=0.9) and nitrogen NUE (R2=0.4). Estimation of phosphorus NUE was not satisfactory. High surpluses are associated with high fertilizer applications, high animal density and high grass production while an increasing share of sugar beets leads to lower surpluses. A high nitrogen NUE is associated with low fertilizer applications, low animal density and little grass production, and with a high sugar beet area share. Results suggest that, with exception of sugar beet, fertilizer recovery in Poland is very low. Sugar beet, however, combines high fertilizer applications with low surpluses and high NUE. The outcome of the model can be used in the design of environmental policies. The paper ends with some remarks on the type of measures that can be taken, and the effects these will have on private farms in Poland.

    Notes: Abstract Six Portuguese soils of varying P sorption capacity were incubated aerobically at 30° C without and with added P in order to give 0.1.mg P L−1 in the soil solution. Two methods of measuring extractable P were compared: (i) mixed-bed cation-anion-resin beads in bags and (ii) a simpler method with anion-resin membrane only. The bag method extracted about twice and 1.5 times as much as the strip method, respectively, without and with added P. The relationships were much closer after one extraction for 2 hours (r = 0.982, p 〈 0.01) instead of the cumulative extraction of 24 hours (r = 0.635,p 〉 0.05.). P recovery after incubation was inversely related to some soil properties as organic matter, buffer capacity, selective dissolution Al forms (Alox and Ald) and P sorption. It is suggested that the simpler resin membrane method is more adequate to assess P for many studies of P reaction with soil. A simpler incubation method was tried, consisting of incubation as a soil suspension in water at a high temperature (50° C). The results suggested that this method gave similar results to aerobic incubation, with the advantage that there was no need to measure the required and final water contents of incubated soil.

    Notes: Abstract Orthophosphate (OP) is a major component of irrigation and nutrient solutions. Since OP precipitates may clog drippers, and deviations from intended OP concentrations may adversely affect plant development and yield, an understanding of the mechanisms controlling OP solubility in solutions of various ionic compositions, is essential. The objectives of this study were (i) to suggest guidelines for permitted OP additions to waters of various ionic compositions, so as to avoid OP crystallization and (ii) to predict the decrease in OP concentration as a function of time in supersaturated solutions. Five freshwater sources, used for irrigation in Israel, and representing extremes of pH and of Ca, HCO3 and SO4 concentrations, were tested. Solutions of three different initial OP concentrations (10, 30 and 90 mg Pl−1) and two pH values were prepared in 21 plastic bottles and kept in a dark room at 27 °C. Solution samples were withdrawn from the bottles at predetermined times, filtered and analysed for pH and total OP, Ca and HCO3 concentrations. In all the studied waters and for all initial OP levels the OP concentration (Cp) declined with time. The rate of decrease in Cp was proportional to the difference between the observed and equilibrium Cp values, with a specific rate constant for each water.The pH and the Ca2+ and HCO 3 − activities in solution were influenced by the initial Cp. The equilibrium Cp in all treatments was found to be controlled by octacalcium phosphate (OCP). Available chemical equilibria models allow to calculate the maximum level of OP that can be added to various waters before OCP precipitates, based on water pH and Ca, HCO3 and SO 4 2− concentrations.

    Notes: Abstract An earlier study of phosphate sorption by some savanna soils from Nigeria suggested that increased P sorption when pH was raised might be due to precipitation of exchangeable Al as amorphous polymeric Al species with increased sorption sites. But these savanna soils have Ca as the dominant cation in their exchange sites, and low exchangeable Al. The objective of this study was to determine the role played by Ca in pH-induced P sorption of three savanna soils under continuous cultivation. Phosphorus sorption increased when pH was raised from 4.5 to 7.0. Similarly, Ca retention increased with increasing pH. Regression of P sorption on Ca retention indicated a significant linear relationship in the three soils. Three possible mechanisms were proposed to explain the increasing P sorption with increasing pH: precipitation of Ca-phosphates, Ca-induced P sorption or co-adsorption of Ca and H2PO 4 − or HPO 4 2− as ion pairs or complexes. Available evidence suggests that all three mechanisms can operate together to enhance P retention as pH increases. The paper proposes that increased P sorption by savanna soils when pH is raised is likely to be related to the chemistry and retention of Ca rather than to hydrolytic reactions of Al.

    Notes: Abstract The electrolyte concentration of the soil solution affects the availability of some nutrients in the soil, especially of P, but it is not know at what salt concentration the reactions start to be significantly affected and their magnitude. This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of rates of potassium chloride (KCl) on some soil parameters that determine supplying of P, K, Ca, Mg, and Al in an unlimed acid soil. Increasing rates of KCl (from zero up to 2000 mg K kg−1) were applied to soil samples fertilized with 360 mg P kg−1. Solution (Cli) and exchangeable (Csi) forms of P, Ca, Mg, K, and Al were determined in the treated soil samples after 30-days of incubation; cation activity in solution and their selectivity coefficients were then calculated. Addition of KCl at rates equal to or above 500 mg K kg−1 caused a large relative increase on P in the soil solution (Pli) but a small and insignificant increase on the absolute value of Pli. All forms of soil K increased with increases on K applied, and buffer power for K varied according to the range of soil K. At all KCl rates, K displaced Ca, Mg, and Al from the solid phase to the soil solution, but had no effect on the extractable values. The relative preference of cations for the adsorption sites increased with increase on cation valency, and only those selectivity coefficients involving K were affected by K applied.

    Notes: Abstract Applying urea with acidic phosphate fertlizer increases urea fertilizer efficiency by reducing ammonia volatilization and toxicity to crop from urea hydrolysis. However, urea and triple superphosphate (TSP) are not recommended to be cogranulated because blends might become wet and sticky. Monoammonium phosphate (MAP) is a less acidic P source than TSP, but is compatible with urea. The objective of this study was to evaluate compound NP fertilizer products made from MAP and TSP combinations as P sources with urea. Fertilizer mixtures were pelletized from commercial urea, TSP and MAP with different N:P2O5 ratios and MAP/TSP combinations. Moisture changes during storage, pH of fertilizer solutions, and ammonia volatilization from surface applied fertilizer pellets were measured. Using MAP with TSP in urea-P mixtures reduced moisture increases during storage. Increasing MAP in urea-TSP-MAP combinations increased fertilizer solution pH by over 1 unit as the MAP/TSP-P2O5 ratio increased from 0/100 to 100/0. Adding MAP as 50% of P in urea-MAP-TSP mixtures at 3:1 and 1.5: (N:P2O5) ratios reduced ammonia loss from urea 50% to 60% compared to urea alone; and ammonia loss was similar to that of urea-TSP combinations. A urea-TSP-MAP fertilizer combination could make efficient use of urea-N by crops by reducing ammonia loss from urea hydrolysis.

    Notes: Abstract Batch experiments were carried out to investigate the stoichiometry and kinetics of microbial degradation of toluene under denitrifying conditions. The inoculum originated from a mixture of sludges from sewage treatment plants with alternating nitrification and denitrification. The culture was able to degrade toluene under anaerobic conditions in the presence of nitrate, nitrite, nitric oxide, or nitrous oxide. No degradation occurred in the absence of Noxides. The culture was also able to use oxygen, but ferric iron could not be used as an electron acceptor. In experiments with14C-labeled toluene, 34%±8% of the carbon was incorporated into the biomass, while 53%±10% was recovered as14CO2, and 6%±2% remained in the medium as nonvolatile water soluble products. The average consumption of nitrate in experiments, where all the reduced nitrate was recovered as nitrite, was 1.3±0.2 mg of nitrate-N per mg of toluene. This nitrate reduction accounted for 70% of the electrons donated during the oxidation of toluene. When nitrate was reduced to nitrogen gas, the consumption was 0.7±0.2 mg per mg of toluene, accounting for 97% of the donated electrons. Since the ammonia concentration decreased during degradation, dissimilatory reduction of nitrate to ammonia was not the reductive process. The degradation of toluene was modelled by classical Monod kinetics. The maximum specific rate of degradation, k, was estimated to be 0.71 mg toluene per mg of protein per hour, and the Monod saturation constant, K s , to be 0.2 mg toluene/l. The maximum specific growth rate, μ max , was estimated to be 0.1 per hour, and the yield coefficient, Y, was 0.14 mg protein per mg toluene.

    Notes: Abstract We examined microbial colonization, exoenzyme activity, and processing of leaves of yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera), red maple (Acer rubrum), and white oak (Quercus alba) in three streams on the Allegheny Plateau of West Virginia, United States. Leaf packs were placed in streams that varied in their underlying bedrock geology, and therefore in their sensitivity to the high level of acidic precipitation that occurs in this region. The mean pH of the streams was 4.3 in the South Fork of Red Run (SFR), 6.2 in Wilson Hollow Run (WHR), and 7.7 in the North Fork of Hickman Slide Run (HSR). Through time, the patterns of microbial biomass and exoenzyme activity were generally similar among leaf species, but the magnitude of microbial biomass and exoenzyme activity differed among leaf species. Pectinase activity was greatest in HSR, the most alkaline stream, whereas the activity of exocellulase and xylanase was greatest in WHR and SFR, the intermediate and acidic streams. This variation in the activity of different exoenzymes was consistent with published pH optima for these exoenzymes. Variation in processing rates, both among leaf species and among streams, seems to be related to the level of microbial exoenzyme activity on the leaf detritus.

    Notes: Abstract Phycomyces blakesleeanus sporangiospores responded differently to activation by physical and chemical stimuli. Spores that were physically (heat shock) activated or chemically (ammonium acetate) activated germinated and grew at pH 4.5 with the hexoses glucose, fructose, galactose, and N-acetylglucosamine, and with glycerol and amino acids. Under these conditions, physically activated spores showed a lower, although significant growth with the hexoses fructose, galactose, N-acetylglucosamine and with glycerol. On the other hand, physically activated spores incubated at alkaline pH (pH 7.3) required glucose to germinate; a requirement not observed with chemically activated spores, which showed significant growth in the other hexoses tested. Both physically and chemically activated spores incubated at pH 7.3 were unable to germinate and grow with amino acids and glycerol. These results suggest that there are different targets for activation of the spores by physical and chemical treatments. The levels of the fermentative enzymes alcohol dehydrogenase and lactate dehydrogenase and of the oxidative enzyme NAD+-isocitrate dehydrogenase were higher in cells grown at pH 4.5 in medium containing glucose; however, alcohol dehydrogenase and lactate dehydrogenase appear not to be affected by a change in the pH of the growth medium.

    Notes: Abstract Calcite dissolution rates were measured using a free-drift technique at 25°C, 1 atm total pressure, and various $$P_{CO_2 } $$ in deionized water. The data were corrected for gas phase disequilibrium and fitted to a kinetic expression derived by coupling the mechanistic models of Plummeret al. (1987a) and Chouet al. (1989) to the surface complexation model of Van Cappellenet al. (1993). Corrected dissolution and precipitation rate measurements from previous investigations were combined to our data set and fitted to the same expression. The following reactions provide an adequate description of the calcite dissolution and precipitation mechanism in dilute solutions: for which the overall reaction rate is given by where 〉i are the densities of surface complexes (mol/m2),a i are the activities of dissolved species and,k i are the rate constants corresponding to the above reactions. This rate equation satisfies the principle of microscopic reversibility and applies to both dissolution and precipitation reactions over a wide range of $$P_{CO_2 } $$ , pH and saturation states. The rate constants obtained from fitting the data set to Equation (3) are compatible with values reported by Plummeret al. and Chouet al., as well as yielding a very good estimate of the thermodynamic solubility constant of calcite, K 0 sp .

    Notes: Abstract Surface waters in northern forest ecosystems receive a substantial amount of drainage water from superficial soil horizons enriched in organic matter (SOM). Chemical reactions in the interface between the soil solution andf organic colloides will therefore affect the surface water chemistry. The mobilization of total organic carbon (TOC) and pH was studied as a function of amounts of organically adsorbed Na, Ca and Al in two O and one A horizon, which differed in the likelihood of contributing to the chemistry in runoff, in a forested watershed in northern Sweden. The samples were hydrogen ion saturated, washed and titrated with NaOH, Ca(OH)2 and Al(OH)3 in a constant ionic medium of 0.01 M NaCl in order to give rise to a population of manipulated samples differing in the composition of adsorbed cations. The highly humified SOM accumulated in the Oh and Ah horizons of a Gleysol close to the draining stream was stabilized by flocculating Al (95% of adsorbed metal cations), which resulted in a low release of TOC. These horizons showed a high potential of organic carbon solubility when Al was changed for di- or monovalent cations. Calculations suggested that the release of TOC would increase more than ten times if Al was exchanged for Ca upon liming to pH 6.0. The pH values of all horizons were shown to be determined mainly by the composition of adsorbed mono-,di- and trivalent cations.

    Notes: Abstract Bulk snow samples were collected from the snowpack in open areas along two sampling lines running to the west from the Cu-Ni smelters at Nikel and Monchegorsk, NW Russia, during 1991–1993. The aim of the study was to estimate the area affected by sulphur and heavy metal deposition from the smelters. Snowpack quality was used as an indicator of deposition during winter time. The total sulphur, copper and nickel concentrations in the snowpack decreased significantly (p〈0.001) with increasing distance from the smelters along the sampling line running directly to the west from Monchegorsk. The deposition pattern was similar each winter during 1991–1993. The pH values did not correlate with the corresponding sulphur concentrations, and there was no decreasing pH gradient in the snowpack on moving towards Monchegorsk. The effects of sulphur emissions from Monchegorsk on snowpack chemistry were not detectable on the Finnish side of the border. The 3-year mean of the total sulphur concentration was 0.27 mg/kg, and of the pH values 4.92, along the sampling line running to the west of Monchegorsk. The total sulphur concentrations near the smelters (〈 20 km) varied between 0.37 and 0.95 mg/kg. The effect of the Cu-Ni smelters at Nikel on snowpack quality was not detectable in northern Finnish Lapland. The 3-year mean for total sulphur was 0.20 mg/kg and for pH 4.96 along the sampling line running to the west of Nikel.

    Notes: Abstract Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was investigated inWalterinnesia aegyptia venom and characterized with respect to its kinetic properties. It was found that 4.0 ug of crude venom protein and an incubation time of 4.0 min were suitable conditions for linearity of AChE activity at 25°C. The optimum strength of the sodium phosphate buffer was 0.05 M, and the optimum pH was 7.75. The optimum temperature was 30°C. The activation energy and the heat of activation were observed to be 6510 and 5922 cal/mole. The AChE was specific for acetylthiocholine but it did not hydrolyse butyrylthiocholine. The optimum substrate concentration was 3.0 mM but at higher substrate concentrations, the AChE activity declined. The ASCh concentration ranges for different orders of the reactions were determined and kinetic parameters (Km, Vmax, kcat, and ksp) were established at each order of the reaction.

    Notes: Abstract The kinetics, structural aspects, and phase morphologies were studied for tantalum oxidation in air from 600 to 1000°C for samples of different purity (99.15%, 99.76%, and 99.95% Ta). Regardless of purity, tantalum oxidation in the temperature range of 600–800°C as a rule is governed by a linear rate law. From 900 to 1000°C the initial-stage oxidation is governed by the parabolic rate law, which changes to the linear rate law with time. TGA, XRD, SEM, and AES methods were used. The, effect of purity on tantalum oxidation was shown to be determined by the mechanism of intermediate-oxide formation. They are TaO z (Ta2O) at 600–800°C and TaO at 900–1000°C. The final product of oxidation was β-Ta2O5.

    Notes: Abstract The sulfidizing behavior of Fe−22Cr−4Al−0.15Zr (wt.%) was studied in two atmospheres: S2 vapor over the range 4.4–25.4 Pa and H2−H2S mixtures corresponding to aP S 2 range 0.2–1.297 Pa in the temperature range 973–1373 K. It was found that the constitution of the gaseous phase is of great importance on the corrosion kinetics and the morphology of the corrosion products. Furthermore, a stratification phenomenon during scale growth was observed during the initial sulfidation stage in H2−H2S mixtures containing a sufficiently high H2S partial pressure. This behavior was not observed during tests in puresulfur vapor.

    Notes: Abstract Recent studies of the structure and dynamics of solid-solid interfaces have provided some understanding about the role of the scale-metal interface in the growth of reaction product scales on pure metals. The action of interfacial defects (misfit dislocations, misorientation dislocations and disconnections) in the creation and annihilation of the point defects suporting the diffusional growth of scales is considered. Anion point defects (vacancies/interstitials) supporting scale growth by anion diffusion are annihilated/created by the climb of misorientation dislocations or disconnections in the scale at the interface. For scale growth by cation diffusion, cation point defects (vacancies/interstitials) can be annihilated/created by the climb of interfacial misfit or misorientation dislocations in the metal. Because of their necessarily high density, in most cases, the dominant climb of misfit dislocations would be favored. The blocking of interfacial reaction steps can be a means to retard the scaling kinetics and to alter the fundamental scaling mode. For instance, the interfacial segregation of large reactive element ions can pin the interface dislocations, an action which poisons the usual interfacial reaction step. Such considerations are consistent with the well-known phenomena ascribed to the reactive element effect (REE).

    Notes: Abstract Mixing of acid river water containing aluminium (pH 5.1, Al 345 μg.l−1) with neutral water of a lake (pH 7.0, Al 73 μg.l−1) resulted in water (pH 6.4, Al 245 μg.l−1) with a pH (6.4) and Al concentration (245 μg.l−1) expected to have low toxicity to fish on the basis of current Al toxicity models. However, under semi-field conditions the freshly mixed water (a few sec. after mixing) proved to be highly toxic to brown trout. The fish were exposed to the water at different places along a 30 m channel. At the beginning of the channel acid and neutral water were continuously mixed; the mixed water left the channel after 340 sec. The cells of the gills showed a highly increased rate of cell death by apoptosis and necrosis. Intercellular spaces were enlarged, and many leucocytes penetrated in these spaces. Mucus release was stimulated to depletion. Plasma chloride levels were hardly affected. There was a clear gradient in the deleterious effects on the fish along the channel. The fish at the beginning of the channel (about 12 sec. after mixing of the water), were severely affected, whereas the fish kept at the end of the channel (340 sec. after mixing) were only mildly affected. In the natural situation fish will relatively quickly pass through a mixing zone. In our study we therefore focused on the effects on fish after a 60 min exposure to a mixing zone (5 sec after mixing), with subsequent recovery in a region downstream of the confluence and in neutral water with low Al. The recovery in the downstream area (at the end of the channel, i.e. 5 min after mixing) was clearly hampered when compared to the recovery in neutral water with low aluminium. Thus, a short exposure to the toxic mixing zone followed by a stay in water downstream of this zone, as may occur in nature, is detrimental to migrating trout. We conclude that freshly mixed acid and neutral water contain toxic components during the first seconds to minutes after mixing, that can not be explained by current models on aluminium toxicity.

    Notes: Abstract Since 1993 we are studying three Scots pine ecosystems along a deposition gradient in north-eastern Germany (formerly GDR). Dramatic reductions of pollutant emissions are reported for the period since 1989/90. S-deposition is high at the sites Roesa and Taura (25 kg S ha−1yr−1) compared to Neuglobsow. Inputs of basic cations, especially Ca, by alkaline dust immissions decrease in the order Roesa 〉 Taura 〉 Neuglobsow. The soil solution data show high concentrations of Ca and SO4 at Roesa decreasing drastically along the deposition gradient. The elevated pH values reflect the impact of alkaline dust deposition particularly in the organic surface layer at Roesa. The site Taura received less base cation deposition and is marked by the lowest pH values throughout the soil profile combined with increased Al concentrations in the solution of the mineral soil. Thus, the composition of the soil solutions clearly reflects the different deposition regimes of the past. The element budgets show that large amounts of base cations, sulfur, and, at Taura, also aluminum are actually released from the soils that were previously stored.

    Notes: Abstract The contribution to local wet deposition of emissions from a coal-fired power station at Inkoo on the south coast of Finland has been investigated during a wintertime precipitation event. Making use of intensive radiosonde and weather radar observations of meteorological factors, concentrations of sulphur in deposition due to plume washout were predicted by a short-range deposition model. The model used the scavenging coefficient to parametrize the wet removal of pollutants, and it took into account the wind drift of falling precipitation particles within the plume. The model predictions were then compared with the chemical analysis results from snowfall samples collected within 10 km of the power station during the experiment. The experiment was performed ahead of a deeply-occluded front during a period with strong advection of long-range transported pollutants. No reliable sign of the influence of the power station on the sulphate deposition could be identified. On the other hand, the deviations of acidity from the mean pH-value of 4.1 were concentrated in one sector near the expected area of deposited plume pollutants. If local emissions were responsible for these deviations, the explanation may lie in a slightly incorrectly estimated plume direction or the effects of alkaline fly ash. Nevertheless, definite conclusions cannot be drawn, because only a few collectors happened to be sited in the modelled sector of plume washout and none in its maximum area.

    Notes: Abstract The molecular-scale species distributions and intermediate-scale structure of silicate sols influence the microstructures of the corresponding thin films prepared by dip-coating. Using multi-step hydrolysis procedures, we find that, depending on the sequence and timing of the successive steps, the species distributions (determined by 29Si NMR) and intermediate scale structure (determined by SAXS) can change remarkably for sols prepared with the same nominal composition. During film formation, these kinetic effects cause differences in the efficiency of packing of the silicate species, leading to thin film structures with different porosities.

    Notes: Abstract To reveal the functional role of Glu87 and Trp89 in the lid ofHumicola lanuginosa lipase, site-directed mutagenesis at Glu87 and Trp89 was carried out. The catalytic performance of wild-type and mutated lipases was studied in transesterification reactions in cyclohexane at a controlled water activity. Two different acyl donors were used in the investigation: tributyrin, a natural substrate for a lipase, and vinyl butyrate, an activated ester suitable for fast and efficient lipase-catalyzed transformations in preparative organic synthesis. As acyl acceptor 1-heptanol was used. The Glu87Ala mutation decreased theV max,app value with tributyrin and vinyl butyrate by a factor of 1.5 and 2, respectively. TheK m,app for tributyrin was not affected by the Glu87Ala mutation, but theK m,app for vinyl butyrate increased twofold compared to the wild-type lipase. Changing Trp89 into a Phe residue afforded an enzyme with a 2.7- and 2-fold decreasedV max,app with the substrates tributyrin and vinyl butyrate, respectively, compared to the wild-type lipase. No significant effects on theK m,app values for tributyrin or vinyl butyrate were seen as a result of the Trp89Phe mutation. However, the introduction of a Glu residue at position 89 in the lid increased theK m,app for tributyrin and vinyl butyrate by a factor of 〉5 and 2, respectively. The Trp89Glu mutated lipase could not be saturated with tributyrin within the experimental conditions (0–680 mM) studied here. With vinyl butyrate as a substrate theV max,app was only 6% of that obtained with wild-type enzyme.

    Notes: Abstract Slowly activating vacuolar (SV-type; Hedrich and Neher 1987, Nature 329: 833–835) ion channels provide the predominant membrane conductance of the vacuolar-lysosomal compartment of Vicia faba L. guard cells and sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) taproots. Applying the patch-clamp technique to isolated vacuoles of both tissues, the electrical and pharmacological properties of guard-cell SV-type currents were studied and compared to the sugar beet channel with regard to its modulation by cytoplasmic Ca2+ and pH. This outward rectifier of V. faba guard cells showed a half-maximum activation at 55–60 mV with an apparent gating charge equivalent of z ≈ 4. Studies on the single-channel and whole-vacuole level revealed an extremely high conductance of 280 pS for the guard-cell channels at a mean density of 0.37 μm-2 compared to taproots (120–140 pS at about 0.16 channels per μm2). Guard-cell SV-type channels are weakly selective for cations over anions and lack saturation at KC1 concentrations of up to 1 M. Since in the absence of physiological K+ concentrations, Ca2+ is the major permeable ion, relative changes in the amounts of the two ions might control the permeation process. In spite of their different origins and physiological functions, in guard cells and beet taproot cells, cytoplasmic Ca2+ and protons, both considered as candidates for intracellular signalling in plants, modulate the voltage dependence of SV-type channels. While the two effectors do not alter the single-channel conductance, they strongly interact with the voltage sensor. The calmodulin (CaM) antagonists N-(6-aminohexyl)-5-chloro-l-naphthalenesulfonamide hydrochloride (W-7), trifluoperazine (TFP) and calmidazolium hydrochloride (R 24571) effectively blocked the channel in an antagonist-specific manner. In agreement with the properties of a Ca2+-permeable channel, CaM could be involved in the modulation of the activation threshold of the SV-type channel. We therefore conclude that guard-cell SV-type channels, which might be responsible for the release of K+, Cl- and to a smaller extent Ca2+ during stomatal closure, could serve as an intracellular sensor for changes in cytosolic calcium (calcium-CaM) and pH.

    Notes: Abstract Macroscopic instantaneous and time-dependent currents have been measured in the vacuolar membrane of Beta vulgaris using a patch clamp configuration analogous to whole cell mode. At low cytosolic Ca2+ and in the absence of Mg2+, only an instantaneous current was observed. This current is carried predominantly by cations (PK∶PCl 7∶1, pna∶pcl 4∶1 and arginine is also conducted). The instantaneous current can be activated by ATP4− (e.g., ATP-activated mean K+ current density was −20 mA.m−2 at a membrane voltage of −20 mV) and by increasing cytosolic pH and Mg2+ (raising Mg2+ from 0 to 0.4 mm induced a mean current density increase of −7 mA.m−2 at −20 mV). Such current can be activated by simultaneous addition of putative in vivo concentrations of ATP4−/MgATP/Mg free 2+ (in the presence of bafilomycin to inhibit the vacuolar ATPase) and further modulated by cytosolic pH. With vacuolar K+ concentration greater than that of the cytosol, activation of the instantaneous current would mediate vacuolar K+ release over the range of physiological membrane voltage. It is argued that the ATP4−-activated current, in addition to acting as a K+ mobilization pathway, could provide a counter-ion (shunt) conductance, allowing the two electrogenic H+ pumps which reside in the vacuolar membrane to acidify the vacuolar lumen. A separate time-dependent current, which was not observed at low Ca2+ concentrations (less than 500 nm) could also be elicited by addition of Mg2+ at the cytoplasmic membrane face. This current was stimulated by increasing cytoplasmic pH.

    Notes: Abstract The pH-sensitivity of transepithelial K+ transport was studied in vitro in isolated vestibular dark cell epithelium from the gerbil ampulla. The cytosolic pH (pH iwas measured microfluorometrically with the pH-sensitive dye 2′,7′-bicarboxyethyl-5(6)-carboxyfluorescein (BCECF) and the equivalent short-circuit current (I sc), which is a measure for transepithelial K+ secretion, was calculated from measurements of the transepithelial voltage (V t)and the transepithelial resistance (R t) in a micro-Ussing chamber. All experiments were conducted in virtually HCO 3 − -free solutions. Under control conditions, pH iwas 7.01±0.04 (n=18), V twas 9.1±0.5 mV, R t16.7±0.09 Ωcm2, and I sc was 587±30 μA/cm2 (n=49). Addition of 20 mm propionate− caused a biphasic effect involving an initial acidification of pH i, increase in V tand I sc and decrease in R tand a subsequent alkalinization of pH i, decrease of V tand increase of R t. Removal of propionate− caused a transient effect involving an alkalinization of pH i, a decrease of V tand I sc and an increase in R t. pH iin the presence of propionate− exceeded pH iunder control conditions. Effects of propionate − on V t, R tand I sc were significantly larger when propionate− was applied to the basolateral side rather than to the apical side of the epithelium. The pH i-sensitivityof I sc between pH 6.8 and 7.5 was −1089 μA/(cm2 · pH-unit) suggesting that K+ secretion ceases at about pH i7.6. Acidification of the extracellular pH (pH o)caused an increase of V tand I sc and a decrease of R tmost likely due to acidification of pH i. Effects were significantly larger when the extracellular acidification was applied to the basolateral side rather than to the apical side of the epithelium. The pH osensitivity of I sc between pH 7.4 and 6.4 was −155 μA/(cm2 · pH unit). These results demonstrate that transepithelial K+ transport is sensitive to pH iand pH oand that vestibular dark cells contain propionate− uptake mechanism. Further, the data suggest that cytosolic acidification activates and that cytosolic alkalinization inactivates the slowly activating K+ channel (I sK)in the apical membrane. Whether the effect of pH ion the I sK channel is a direct or indirect effect remains to be determined.

    Notes: Abstract The present study focuses on two closely related topics on ion conductance in toad skins: (i) the interaction of apical protons with the apical voltage-dependent Cl−-activated channels of the mitochondriarich cells, and (ii) the description and characterization of a novel subject, a voltage-dependent H+-activated conductance. The Cl− conductance (G Cl) is activated by tissue hyperpolarization (which leads to apical membrane depolarization) and the presence of Cl− ions in the apical solution. Increasing apical proton concentration (from pH 8 to pH 4) impairs the process of activation of the Cl− conductive pathway, slowing the kinetics of I t activation and reducing the steady-stage values of G t and I t . This effect is markedly voltage-dependent since no effect is seen at V t =−100 mv and is fully present at −50 mV. The voltage-dependence of the pH effect suggests that the critical protonation sites of the apical Cl− channels are not freely exposed to the apical solution but dwell within the membrane electric field. An also coherent interpretation is that titration of apical proton binding sites affects the gating of the voltage-dependent Cl− channels, shifting the conductance-vs.-voltage curve to more negative clamping potentials. Tissue conductance in the absence of apical Cl− ions can be importantly affected by the pH of the apical solution (pH a ), the effect being markedly dependent on the clamping potential. Generally speaking, the effect of rising apical proton concentration can be conspicuous at negative clamping potentials, while at positive potentials changes in tissue conductance were never observed. For a clamping potential of −100 mV, a turning point somewhere between pH a =4 and pH a =3 was observed. Apical acidification to pH 4 has no effect upon tissue conductance while apical acidification to pH 3 leads to a marked, slow and reversible increase of tissue conductance. A striking similitude exists between the voltage-dependent Cl−-gated conductance and the voltage-dependent proton-gated conductance regarding: (i) slow time courses of activation and deactivation, (ii) requirement for a negative clamping potential and the presence of a specific ion species in the apical solution for activation to take place, (iv) instantaneous ohmic behavior, and (v) steady-state rectification. However, so far the results do not permit one to conclude definitely that the voltage-dependent Cl−-gated conductance and the voltage-dependent proton-gated conductance share a common pathway.

    Notes: Abstract Voltage clamp technique was used to study macroscopic ionic currents in Rana esculenta oocytes. Depolarization steps led to the activation of a single type of outward current (I out) when contaminant potassium and calcium-dependent chloride currents were pharmacologically inhibited. The voltage threshold of I out activation was 10 mV and this current, which did not inactivate, presented a deactivation the time constant of 73±21 msec (n=26) corresponding to a membrane voltage of −60 mV. Its reversal potential (E rev) was dependent on the magnitude of the depolarization and also on pulse duration. These changes in E rev were thought to reflect intracellular ion depletion occurring during activation of the remaining outward current. Furthermore, the activation threshold of I out was clearly affected by modifications in extracellular and intracellular H+ concentrations. Indeed, intracellular alkalinization (evoked by external application of ammonium chloride) or extracellular acidification induced a rightward shift in the activation threshold while intracellular acidification (evoked by external application of sodium acetate) or extracellular alkalinization shifted this threshold toward a more negative value. Lastly, I out was dramatically reduced by divalent cations such as Cd2+, Ni2+ or Zn2+ and was strongly decreased by 4 Aminopyridine (4-AP), wellknown H+ current antagonists already described in many cell types. Therefore, it was suggested that the outward current was prominently carried by H+ ions, which may play a key role in the regulation of intracellular pH and subsequent pH dependent processes in Rana oocyte.

    Notes: Abstract Intracellular pH (pH i ), membrane potential (V m ) and membrane conductance (G m ) in fused proximal tubular cells of the frog kidney, were determined at three extracellular pH (pH o ) values, 7.5, 8.5 and 6.5. Imposed changes of pH o by ±1 pH unit induced parallel but smaller shifts of pH i . The alkaline milieu hyperpolarized the cells and increased G m , whereas the acid milieu depolarized and lowered G m . We subsequently introduced a weak acid and its conjugate base (acetic acid/acetate), or a weak base and its conjugate acid (NH3/NH 4 + ), at pH o 7.5, 8.5 and 6.5 to shift pH i -without altering pH o , or to shift pH i against imposed changes of pH o . From these experiments, we observed that under some circumstances V m varied with pH o but without G m or pH i changes, whereas under other circumstances changes of G m occurred during alterations of pH i while pH o and V m remained unaltered. At pH i ≈ 6.5 associated with V m ≈ −10 mV, G m dramatically increased to quasi-infinite values. This increase was not an artifact since G m returned to its control value following recovery to the control solution or in the presence of hyperosmotic solution. In conclusion, we demonstrate a differential regulation whereby V m and G m are controlled by pH o and pH i : pH o modulates mainly V m , and pH i modulates chiefly G m . Furthermore, at pH i ≈ 6.5 and V m ≈ −10 mV, our data reveal a large G m that tends towards infinite values in a reversible fashion.

    Notes: Abstract We have characterized a voltage-sensitive chloride channel from cardiac sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) following reconstitution of porcine heart SR into planar lipid bilayers. In 250 mm KCl, the channel had a main conductance level of 130 pS and exhibited two substrates of 61 and 154 pS. The channel was very selective for Cl− over K+ or Na+ ( $$P_{{\text{K}}^{\text{ + }} } /P_{{\text{Cl}}^{\text{ - }} } = 0.012$$ and $$P_{{\text{Na}}^{\text{ + }} } /P_{{\text{Cl}}^{\text{ - }} } \sim 0.040$$ ). It was permeable to several anions and displayed the following sequence of anion permeability: SCN− 〉 I− 〉 NO 3 − ∼ Br− 〉 Cl− 〉 f− 〉 HCOO−. Single-channel conductance saturated with increasing Cl− concentrations (K m= 900 mm and γmax = 488 pS). Channel activity was voltage dependent, with an open probability ranging from ∼1.0 around 0 mV to ∼0.5 at +80 mV. From −20 to +80 mV, channel gating was time-independent. However, at voltages below −40 mV the channel entered a long-lasting closed state. Mean open times varied with voltage, from ∼340 msec at −20 mV to ∼6 msec at +80 mV, whereas closed times were unaffected. The channel was not Ca2+-dependent. Channel activity was blocked by disulfonic stilbenes, arylaminobenzoates, zinc, and cadmium. Single-channel conductance was sensitive to trans pH, ranging from ∼190 pS at pH 5.5 to ∼60 pS at pH 9.0. These characteristics are different from those previously described for Cl− channels from skeletal or cardiac muscle SR.

    Notes: Abstract This study examines the effects of acute in vitro acid-base disorders on Na+/H+ and H+-ATPase transporters in rabbit kidney proximal tubules (PT). PT suspensions were incubated in solutions with varying acid base conditions for 45 min and utilized for brush border membrane (BBM) vesicles preparation. BBM vesicles were studied for Na+/H+ exchange activity (assayed by 22Na+ influx) or abundance (using NHE-3 specific antibody) and H+-ATPase transporter abundance (using antibody against the 31 kDa subunit). The Na+/ H+ exchanger activity increased by 55% in metabolic acidosis (pH 6.5, HCO 3 − 3 mm) and decreased by 41% in metabolic alkalosis (pH 8.0, HCO 3 − 90 mm). The abundance of NHE-3 remained constant in acidic, control, and alkalotic groups. H+-ATPase abundance, however, decreased in metabolic acidosis and increased in metabolic alkalosis by 57% and 42%, respectively. In PT suspensions incubated in isohydric conditions (pH 7.4), Na+/H+ exchanger activity increased by 29% in high HCO 3 − group (HCO 3 − 96 mm) and decreased by 16% in the low HCO 3 − groups (HCO 3 − 7mm. The NHE-3 abundance remained constant in high, normal, and low [HCO 3 − ] tubules. The abundance of H+-ATPase, however, increased by 82% in high [HCO 3 − ] and decreased by 77% in the low [HCO 3 − ] tubules. In PT suspensions incubated in varying pCO2 and constant [HCO 3 − ], Na+/H+ exchanger activity increased by 35% in high pCO2 (20% pCO2, respiratory acidosis) and decreased by 32% in low pCO2 (1.5% pCO2, respiratory alkalosis) tubules. The NHE-3 abundance remained unchanged in high, normal, and low pCO2 tubules. However, the H+-ATPase abundance increased by 74% in high pCO2 and decreased by 69% in low pCO2 tubules. The results of these studies suggest that the luminal Na+/H+ exchanger is predominantly regulated by pH whereas H+-ATPase is mainly regulated by [HCO 3 − ] and/ or pCO2. They further suggest that the adaptive changes in H+-ATPase transporter are likely mediated via endocytic/exocytic pathway whereas the adaptive changes in Na+/H+ exchanger are via the nonendocytic/exocytic pathway.     Notes: Abstract We investigated the effects of internal pH on Ca-activated, nucleotide-inhibited nonselective cation channels in the basolateral membranes of mouse collecting tubules, using the inside-out variant of the patch clamp technique. pH modulated the channel open probability (P o ), giving a bell-shaped curve peaking at pH 6.8/7.0: P o at pH 6.0 was 11±6% of P o at pH 7.2 and 32 ±7% at pH 8.0. The open and closed time distributions, best fitted to the sum of two exponentials, were differently sensitive to acid and alkaline conditions. Low pH reduced the short and long open times to 38 and 24% of their pH 7.2 values, while high pH produced a 4-fold increase in the long closed time. As previously reported, 4-acetamido-4′-isothiocyanatostilbene-2,2′-disulfonic acid (SITS) induced a quasi-permanent opening of the channel. The inhibition of the channel produced by high pH disappeared in the presence of SITS, while the inhibition produced by low pH was unaffected. These results suggest that the pH dependence of the channel is due to two separate mechanisms. pH was without effect on the ATP-evoked inhibition of the channel, while high pH profoundly reduced the steepness of the AMP inhibition curve, without altering the half-maximal inhibitory AMP concentration.

It was established that under irradiation, the hydrogen atom of the substituted methyl group is transferred to aperi-quinoid oxygen atom to form the corresponding 9-hydroxy1, 10-anthraquinone-1-arylcyanomethides. Dark transformations of photoinduced quinonemethides result from three competing parallel processes: intramolecular transfer of the hydrogen atom, a reaction with a solvent (alcohol), and oxidation by dissolved oxygen. The kinetics of these reactions were studied.

    Notes: Abstract The kinetics of the thermal decomposition of bis(2,2-dinitropropyl)-N-fluoroamine are studied in the liquid phase. The reaction is autocatalytic in a melt. In dilute solution, the reaction rate is described by the first-order law. It is tens of times faster in polar sulfolan than in weakly polar dimethyl phthalate. A mechanism of the decomposition involving the formation of a cyclic transition state at the first, limiting stage of the process is suggested.

    Notes: Abstract Photoreduction of Methyl Orange dye (MOr) by sodium sulfide was studied under steady-state photolysis (λ = 365 nm). The reaction was sensitized by the CdS colloid with the characteristic ∼5-nm particle size. The quantum yield of the reaction is independent of the light intensity when the latter is less than 5 mW cm−2. The form of the dependence of the initial quantum yield of the reaction on [MOr] coincides qualitatively with the adsorption isotherm of the dye on the CdS surface. The reaction kinetics under steady-state irradiation were analyzed. The kinetics in solution as a whole are shown to be adequate to those on a single colloidal particle. On the basis of the experimental data, two types of surfaces of the colloidal particles are suggested (“open” and “covered” with macromolecules of a colloid stabilizer), which significantly differ in the rate at which they establish an adsorption-desorption equilibrium with the solution.

Isobutylene is rapidly hydrated to give 2-methylpropan-2-ol. The presence of formaldehyde in the reaction mixture indicates that the transformations involve the reverse Prins reaction.     Notes: Abstract Relationships between the growth of certain fungi isolated from city waste and pH and temperature were examined by two methods. The tested isolates showed their maximum growth and sporulation at different pHs while temperature requirements were the same (28°C), except forHumicola grisea (43°C).Cladosporium herbarum andH. grisea showed double pH optima. The ranges of pH and temperature for sporulation were more limited than those for the vegetative growth. Although all the tested isolates showed wide tolerances to pH and temperature, the degree of tolerance varied with the isolates. A considerable change from the initial pH of the liquid medium was noted at the end of the experiment.

    Notes: Summary Phagocytic cells of the immune system contain an oxidase that is important for the killing and digestion of engulfed microbes. This is an electron transport chain that transfers electrons from NADPH in the cytosol to oxygen to form superoxide and hydrogen peroxide in the phagocytic vacuole. Absence or abnormality of this oxidase results in the syndrome of CGD, characterised by a profound predisposition to infection. The electron transport chain consists of a flavocytochrome b located in the plasma membrane and membrane of the specific granules. It is composed of a and b-subunits, with apparent molecular masses of 23 kDa and 76–92 kDa, respectively. The b-subunit is a member of the FNR family of reductases with FAD and NADPH binding sites. Based upon the crystal structure of FNR we have constructed a model of the more hydrophilic C terminal half of this b-subunit, which acts as a guide to the organisation of the molecule, and provides a template on which to map mutations in CGD. The location of the heme is uncertain. Electron transport is dependent upon an activation complex of cytosolic proteins including p40 phox , p47 phox , and p67 phox , and the small GTP binding protein, p21 rac . This oxidase system is important for the killing and digestion of bacteria and fungi. This might be accomplished in a number of ways. The oxidase produces superoxide and hydrogen which might be toxic themselves. The hydrogen peroxide can act as substrate for myeloperoxidase which can oxidise chloride and iodide to chlorine and iodine and their hypohalous acids. The proteins contained within the cytoplasmic granules are also very important in the killing process. These are neutral proteinases that require a neutral or slightly alkaline pH for optimal activity. The oxidase transports electrons, unaccompanied by protons, across the wall of the phagocytic vacuole, resulting in an elevation of the vacuolar pH, thereby optimising conditions for killing and digestion of engulfed organisms by these neutral proteinases.

    Notes: Summary The accumulation of neutral red and acridine orange, to indicate differences in vacuolar pH, was studied during embryogenesis of carrot. Neutral red accumulated barely in proembryogenic masses, but was present conspicuously in globular-shaped somatic embryos. From the late globular to the torpedo-shaped stage, it was mainly found in the root side of the somatic embryo. Here, neutral red was predominantly present in large dark-red to purple stained vesicles. In the cotyledons neutral red was found in small orange vesicles. In zygotic embryos of carrot, the dye was uniformly distributed with no specific localization in organelles. During germination, however, neutral red accumulated mainly in regions in the root side and the hypocotyl of the germling. Acridine orange was dispersed erratically in proembryogenic masses with a great variety in intensity. It was quite obviously present in early stages of somatic embryogenesis and restricted to the root side in late globular to torpedo-shaped embryos. Confocal images revealed the vacuolar presence of the fluorescence and the predominant presence in the protoderm. During germination of zygotic embryos the signal changed from uniform to localized, with sharp borders between fluorescent and non-fluorescent regions. Two to three days after the beginning of germination, acridine orange accumulated preferentially in the root tip of the germling. Differences between somatic and zygotic embryos and similarities between somatic embryogenesis and zygotic embryo germination are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The Great Ouse estuary in southern England is a macrotidal estuary with rather coarse sediment. Two intertidal sites were sampled five times over the year at low tide. The sediments are suboxic, organic poor (approximately 1.5% organic carbon). They are composed mainly of detrital quartz and feldspar with some calcite. At both sites the total phosphorus in the sediments ranges from 0.03 – 0.12% dry weight and total iron from 0.42–1.22% dry weight. Of the total phosphorus 20% is organic and 80% is inorganic of which 10% is water extractable. Total iron and phosphorus correlate well and the ratio of iron:phosphorus is 8.4 which is similar to that found when phosphorus is adsorbed by iron oxyhydroxides, suggesting that iron oxyhydroxides are an important substrate for phosphorus sorption in these sediments. Fluxes of phosphorus from the sediment to the overlying water, measured in cores incubated in the laboratory, are low and show no seasonality. The sodium concentration in the porewaters at both sites is variable suggesting that there is movement of water through the sediment to depths of at least 20 cm. This is borne out by variable phosphorus, iron and phosphorus concentrations in the porewaters and ill defined redox zones in the sediments.

    Notes: Abstract The kinetics of hydrolysis of famotidine in aqueous solution was studied by isothermal and nonisothermal method over the pH range of 1.71 to 10.0. Nonisothermal kinetics was studied with the purpose of determining its use in the establishment of the expiration date of pharmaceutical preparations, particularly drugs in solutions and for assessment of stability characteristics of pharmaceutical formulations during the development stage. A comparison of isothermal (55, 70 and 85°C) and nonisothermal kinetics was performed. Aqueous solutions of famotidine were buffered at pH 1.71, 2.24, 2.66, 4.0, 8.5, 9.0 and 10.0 were used. In the nonisothermal studies, the temperature rate of the reaction was continuously varied throughout the experiment. The energies of activation were found to be in close agreement for isothermal and nonisothermal studies, indicating that nonisothermal studies may save considerable amount of time in the early stages of drug development and stability testing. Logk-pH profiles were constructed for 55, 70 and 85°C from the first-order rate constants obtained from isothermal studies at pH values ranging from 1.71 to 10.00. The pH-rate profile indicated that famotidine undergoes specific acid catalysis in the acidic region and general base catalysis in the alkaline region. Hydrolysis in the acidic and alkaline media resulted in the formation of four and five degradation products, respectively. A possible degradation pathway for the acidic and alkaline hydrolysis was discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Mesocosms (1.3 m3) in a eutrophic reservoir were treated with NH4Cl (160 µmol l−1), KH2PO4 (10 µmol l−1) or nothing (control) and sampled after 8 days to determine how P dynamics are related to relative P deficiency. Photosynthetic rate and chlorophyll data suggested P deficiency in ammonium and control mesocosms and no P deficiency with phosphate additions. Biologically available P (BAP) and the ratio of BAP to soluble reactive P (SRP) decreased as P deficiency increased. Log of short-term uptake as a function of log of phosphate concentration exhibited an approximate linear increase in control and N mesocosms; substrate dependent uptake kinetics showed no saturation up to 500 µmol l−1 phosphate. Uptake was independent of phosphate concentration (saturated) in samples from the 10 µmol l−1 P enriched mesocosm. This suggests that P uptake may not saturate at ecologically realistic values in short term experiments under P deficient conditions. Particle associated phosphatase activity was greatest in the 0.2–3 µm size-fraction in all mesocosms, but total activity varied little with P deficiency.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Les échanges de phosphore au niveau de l'interface eau-sédiment couplés á la distribution temporelle de divers éléments chimiques et biologiques ont été étudiés dans divers réservoirs de niveaux trophiques différents, au Maroc et en France. Nos résultats mettent clairement en évidence une influence directe de l'environnement physico-chimique, de la nature géologique des bassins versants et de l'état trophique du lac sur la dynamique du phosphore au sein de cette interface. De plus, il apparait que dans le lac hypereutrophe de Villerest (Roanne, France), le phosphore est majoritairement complexé au fer alors que dans les retenues marocaines, ce sont les complexes phosphore-calcium qui prédominent. Nous préconisons un contrôle drastique des apports en phosphore á travers l'installation et la multiplication d'unités de déphosphatation afin d'éviter d'une part, la prolifération massive de la Cyanobactérie Microcystis aeruginosa á Villetest (Aleya et al., 1994) et d'autre part la dissociation des complexes phhosphore-calcium au sein des retenues marocaines avec libération de phosphore biodisponible.
    Notes: Abstract Phosphorus exchange at the sediment-water interface coupled with several parameters were assessed in several reservoirs with geologically different catchment basins and different trophic status in Morocco and France. The results showed that these exchanges were regulated by a combination of factors: physical chemical variability of the environment, the geological composition of catchment basins and the trophic status of the lake. In the hypereutrophic Villerest, iron-bound phosphorus is the major form of phosphorus trapped by the sediment whereas, in Moroccan reservoirs, calcium-bound phosphorus prevailed. We suggest that a drastic control of phosphorus inputs into the waters must be done through a large program of dephosphatization of tributaries to avoid Microcystis aeruginosa bloom formation in Villerest (Aleya et al., 1993) and calcium-bound phosphorus dissociation in Moroccan reservoirs with upward release of bioavailable phosphorus.

    Notes: Abstract Phosphorus (P) reactivity and bioavailability in lake sediments may be determined by different forms of P and their distribution. Reactive and nonreactive P pools in two shallow subtropical lake sediments (Lake Apopka and Lake Okeechobee) were determined by sequential chemical extraction using 1 M NH4Cl (pH 7.0), 0.1 M NaOH, and 0.5 M HCl, reportedly representing loosely-bound P, Fe- and Al-bound P, and Ca- and Mg-bound P respectively. The sequential P fractionation was tested using pure P compounds and selected P minerals. The scheme effectively separated Fe- and Al-P from Ca-P fractions in an FePO4-AlPO4-Ca3(PO4)2 mixture. Readily available P, defined as the sum of water-soluble P and NH4Cl-extractable P, in the unconsolidated gyttja (UCG) layer (surface 0–30 cm) of Lake Apopka sediments accounted for 10.1 to 23.7% of total P (TP). This sediment P fraction constitutes a large reservoir which may act as a source of P to the overlying water. In subsurface marl layers (134–148 cm depth) of Lake Apopka, NH4Cl-P constituted 〈I% of TP whereas Ca-Mg-bound P and highly resistant P (residual P) accounted for 35 and 64% of TP respectively. Results suggest that 1 M NH4Cl (pH 7.0) and 0.5 M HCl, reported to dissolve carbonate-bound P and Ca-Mg-bound P, respectively, may not be extracting distinct pools of P. Lake Okeechobee mud sediments had low concentrations of readily available P (2% of TP) and were dominated by Ca-Mg-bound P (HCl-P≥58% of TP). Sediments in the littoral and peat areas of Lake Okeechobee, however, had high concentrations of readily available P (9.7 and 17.4% of TP respectively); hence, these sediments may play an important role in internal P cycling. The NaOH-P (Fe-Al-P) concentrations for Lake Okeechobee sediments were strongly correlated with amorphous and poorly-crystalline Fe (p〈 0.01), suggesting that some P reactions in these sediments may be sensitive to changes in physico-chemical conditions such as redox potential and sediment resuspension.

    Notes: Abstract The performance of five types of benthic diatom index (four quantitative methods and a zoning system) to evaluate water quality was tested in rivers in England and Scotland. Significant correlations were observed between the four quantitative indices examined. In the case of SPI (Specific Pollution sensitivity Index) and GDI (Generic Diatom Index), over 80% of the variation in GDI was explained by a bivariate regression on SPI. Samples taken from six sites at four different times of year showed no significant influence of season on any of the indices. The zoning system led to a similar assessment of organic pollution as the SPI and GDI indices , but it was sometimes difficult to determine the zone. This method showed no obvious advantages over the quantitative indices. The high correlation between values for indices based on species and those on genera suggests that for routine monitoring, recognition to the generic level is adequate.

    Notes: Abstract Measurements of the biomass of deepwater rice plants at sites on the three major floodplains in Bangladesh (Ganges, Jamuna, Meghna) with and without fertilizer treatment were made from shortly before the arrival of flood water (June) until it was receding (mid-October). There was usually an approximately linear increase in biomass per unit area with time until September, but subsequently there were marked differences in response, ranging from a continued steady increase to a sharp drop. Difference in the flood pattern were an important factor influencing changes in biomass and productivity. Net productivity (biomass change) measured at different stages in growth ranged from - 73 to + 220 kg ha-1 d-1 in unfertilized fields and from - 141 to + 430 kg ha-1 d-1 in fertilized fields, with mean values of + 130 in unfertilized and + 160 kg ha-1 d-1 in fertilized fields. However,grain yield reflected the increased biomass in only one of four experiments.

    Notes: Abstract Preliminary estimates of the ratio of mangrove forest: shrimp pond area necessary to remove nutrients from shrimp pond effluent are made using budgets of nitrogen and phosphorus output for semi-intensive and intensive shrimp ponds combined with estimates of total net primary production in Rhizophora-dominated mangrove forests in tropical coastal areas. If effluent is delivered directly to mangrove forest plots, it is estimated that, depending on shrimp pond management, between 2 and 22 hectares of forest are required to filter the nitrogen and phosphorus loads from effluent produced by a 1 hectare pond. While such ratios may apply to small scale, integrated shrimp aquaculture — mangrove forestry farming systems, the variability in mangrove hydrodynamics makes it difficult to apply such ratios at a regional scale. Before mangroves can be used to strip shrimp pond effluent more research is required on the effects that high ammonia and particulate organic matter loads in pond effluent have on nutrient transformations in mangrove sediments and on forest growth.

    Notes: Abstract This paper demonstrates how mathematical modeling can contribute to improve understanding of lake behavior. Since the 60's Lake Bourget, one of the largest in France, had been suffering from eutrophication which was checked in 1980 by the diversion of the main sewers entering the lake. A research program was implemented between 1987 and 1990, including an on-site sampling campaign conducted concurrently with thermal and biogeochemical modeling of lake behavior. The model helped provide a better understanding of the ecosystem, displaying some processes hitherto misunderstood: (1) Winter overturn does not reach the bottom of the water column when the weather is mild. This leads to a incomplete reoxygenation of the hypolimnion and to redox conditions inducing the release of orthophosphate from the sediment, (2) Grazing by herbivorous zooplankton is getting more important in the control of spring algal growth as eutrophication of the lake regresses, (3) Settling of particulate phosphorus seems a complex and very important process in Lake Bourget, showing high sedimentation rates for particulate mineral phosphorus.

    Notes: Abstract Purpose. To determine the degradation rates and pathways of GS-522, a potent oligodeoxynucleotide (GGTTGGTGTGGTTGG) inhibitor of thrombin, in serum and plasma. Methods. A stability-indicating, anion-exchange HPLC method was developed and used to determine concentrations of GS-522 and metabolites. Results. In monkey plasma at 2 µM or below, the degradation of GS-522 can be fit to a first-order exponential with a kp obs ~ 0.01 min−1. At 3 µM and above the degradation process deviates from a monoexponential decay profile. An initial fast degradation process is followed by a slower phase with an observed rate constant equal to that observed at 2 µM and below. In monkey serum, the KMand Vmaxare 8.4 µM and 0.87 µM min−1, respectively. Conclusions. The kinetics are consistent with an equilibrium binding of GS-522 to prothrombin in plasma (Kd = 50 nM) which saturates at GS-522 concentrations 〉2 µM. Compared to a scrambled sequence (GGTGGTGGTTGTGGT), with no defined tertiary structure, GS-522 is 4-fold more stable in serum. The metabolic profile in plasma is consistent with a 3′-exonuclease catalyzed hydrolysis of GS-522.

    Notes: Abstract The relationship between the physiological characteristics and changes in the activities of H+ pumps of the plasma membrane and tonoplast of characean cells is discussed. The large size of the characean internodal cells allows us to perform various experimental operations. The intracellular perfusion technique developed by Tazawaet al. (1976) is a powerful tool for analyzing the characteristics and control mechanisms of the H+ pumps (Tazawa and Shimmen 1987, Tazawaet al. 1987, Shimmenet al. 1994) Respiration-dependent changes in the activity of the plasma membrane H+ pump are explained by changes in the supply of energy substrate. Photosynthesis-dependent changes in activities of both the plasma membrane and the tonoplast H+ pumps are explained in terms of changes in the level of inorganic phosphate in the cytoplasm. Cytoplasmic and vacuolar pHs are suggested to be controlling factors forin vivo activities of the H+ pumps. Furthermore, the membrane potential and various ions are considered to bein vivo factors that regulate the activities of the H+ pumps.

    Notes: Abstract A new method for the detection of phase separation and its kinetics through real-time measurements is presented using the dielectric technique. The kinetics of phase separation were determined for a blend of tetramethyl bisphenol-A polycarbonate TMPC and polystyrene PS at different temperatures. The temperature dependence of the rate constant of phase separation was determined. The activation energy of phase separation process is found to be equal to 46 kcal/mole. In addition, it was possible to determine the variation in the composition of the TMPC-rich phase with time. The results obtained were compared with the literature data and were found to be in good agreement.

    Notes: Abstract The availability of phosphorus in many UK forest soils limits growth of Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.). Efficient cycling of P within such systems is therefore necessary for sustained tree growth. Internal cycling of P is an important component of the overall P cycle in forests and the current work aims to quantify the impact of P nutrition on internal cycling and seasonal growth of Sitka spruce. Two-year old seedlings of Sitka spruce were grown in sand culture in the glasshouse for one year. Two treatments were imposed in which trees received either a complete nutrient solution from which P was excluded (-P) or one in which P was applied as labelled 32P (+P). Internal cycling of P was measured directly in plants which had received no P and by difference in those which received 32P. The contrasting P treatments produced an eight-fold difference in P content and a three-fold difference in tree growth between May and October. Root:shoot ratios increased during the growing season from 0.29 to 0.38 and from 0.29 to 0.52 in +P and-P treatments, respectively. In both treatments P was translocated from old shoots to support new shoot growth. P supply did not affect the amount of P remobilised but there was evidence that the rate of remobilisation may have been affected. The partition of remobilised P was affected by current P supply and differed from the partition of current P uptake. Results are compared to those from studies of growth and internal cycling of nitrogen in Sitka spruce.

    Notes: Abstract Norway spruce (Picea abies) was exposed to nutrient solutions containing a range of aluminium (Al) concentrations at several pH levels (3.2, 4 and 5). Root growth was reduced by 100 µM and 400 µM Al at pH 4 and 5, but at pH 3.2 only by 400 µM Al. The Al content of the roots increased with increasing pH. The Al content of the roots was higher at the root tips than at the older root parts at all pH values. Using X-ray microanalysis it could be shown that higher levels of Al at increased pH were mainly due to increased Al contents in root cortex cell walls. In seedlings, mycorrhizal with Pisolithus tinctorius or Lactarius rufus, the Al concentration of cortex cell walls was higher when nitrate (NO3) rather than ammonium (NH4) was the nitrogen (N) source.

    Notes: Abstract Soil solution and solid phase analyses were compared for stubble standing and stubble burnt systems on an acid, acidified and limed Alfisol in north-eastern Victoria. Exchangeable (1 M KCl) aluminium (Al), soil solution total and monomeric Al, pH (water) and soil solution pH were measured to identify any differences in soil acidification between the stubble burnt and the stubble standing treatments. All measures of Al increased with soil depth down to 10 cm in all stubble treatments and decreased in the 10–20 cm soil depth with the exception of lime treatments. Concentrations of low molecular weight organic acids in the soil solution were determined by high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). Aromatic and aliphatic acids were distributed throughout the soil depth (0–20 cm) for the stubble standing treatments but were confined to the 0–5 cm soil depth for the stubble burnt treatment. In this short term field trial (2 years for stubble management), the data suggest that the conventional practice of stubble burning was more acidifying than the soil conservation practice of stubble standing, over the 0–20 cm soil depth for the lime (6 t ha-1) treatments.

    Notes: Abstract Deschampsia flexuosa (L.) Trin. is an abundant grass species in the ground flora of acidic beech forests in southern Sweden. Generally, the species is restricted to a limited soil pH range (pH 4–5). The main objective was to study the influence of different soil acidities on germination, initial root development and on the growth of the species. The experiments were carried out under controlled conditions and designed to simulate the physico-chemical conditions present in the field. By using forest soils within the pH range 4.0 to 8.3 and artificial variation in pH (3.2 to 7.6) of soil-water extracts, it was possible to evaluate the influence of soil reaction and the H+ per se. In all experiments seeds have been used. Germination was significantly delayed in the very acid soil (pH 4.0) in comparison to the germination in soils within the pH range (4.4 to 6.4). Soil substances, other than the H+, might be responsible for this delay in germination, whereas development of the radicle was markedly affected by increasing H+ concentrations. Especially the development of root hairs was sensitive to H+ and was significantly reduced at a pH〈-3.8. By increasing soil acidity the injury symptoms, including curling and discolouring, became more intense and at the highest acidity (pH 3.2) the radicles appeared brown, stunted and the root hairs were lacking. Most favourable growth was obtained at pH 4.4 and 5.0. Soil pH levels above and below this range limited both shoot and root growth. The results showed very good correspondence with observations made in Beech forest soils in southern Sweden, where the species was growing in soils within the pH range 3.9 to 5.1 with a peak growth at pH 4.3. This study shows that in soils at pH≤3.8, the poor development of the radicle may be crucial in the establishment ofDeschampsia flexuosa. Root hair development was more sensitive to soil acidity than radicle elongation. Germination was delayed in very acid Beech forest soils but other factors than the H-ion per se may be responsible for this delay.

    Notes: Abstract White lupin (Lupinus albus L. var. Ultra) and soybean (Glycine max L. var. Elgin) were grown in an acidic soil low an available phosphorus (P) to investigate their different capacities to acquire soil phosphorus. Experiments done in the controlled environment of a biotron were supplemented with four separate greenhouse experiments. Lupin and soybean were grown in monoculture and intercropped on a soil with low available P that was labeled with carrier-free 32P as phosphate. Lupin had significantly lower values of specific activity of 32P and higher values of isotopically exchangeable P than soybean in all cases. The results show that lupin utilizes soil P from a normally non-labile pool of soil P that is not utilized by soybean.

    Notes: Abstract A study was conducted to investigate the effects of phosphorus on nodule formation and function in the Casuarina-Frankia symbiosis. The effects of P on growth and survival of Frankia in the rhizosphere was assessed by examing Frankia growth and survival in flasks of basal nutrient solution. There was no growth in the nutrient solution during the experimental period. However, the viability of Frankia in the nutrient solution without P supply was half that of the initial level, whereas, with P supply, there was only a minor decline during the first week. In a growth pouch experiment, supplying P increased plant and nodule growth, irrespective of P status of the inoculant Frankia culture. There were no effects of P status on any growth or nodulation parameters measured when the inoculants had been standardized on the basis of viability. In a split root experiment, Frankia inoculation and application of P together or separately did not cause any significant difference. This suggests that growth and nodulation respond only to total P supply. Increasing P from 0.1 to 10 μM significantly increased plant growth but not N concentrations. Both nitrogen-fixation and nitrate supported growth were strongly increased as P increased from 0.1 to 1.0 μM. This study indicates that P deficiency limits the growth of host plants more severely than nitrogen fixation processes and P deficiency on nodulation and symbiotic nitrogen fixation in Casuarina cunninghamiana operated indirectly via reducing host plant growth.

    Notes: Abstract The relative uptake rates of N, P, K, S, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, and Al were estimated in beech seedlings pot cultured in the field in six acid soils (treatments). The relative uptake rates were compared with the relative growth rates. The relative uptake rates of N, K and Ca agreed well with the growth rates of the seedlings irrespective of widely differing soil conditions (acid sand-clayey till, pH 4–6). The relative uptake rates of P, Fe, and Al differed from that predicted by the growth rate. The uptake rates of Fe and Al were highest at the lowest growth rates, and the P uptake rate was lower than the growth rate in these treatments. Thus the P availability probably limited growth in an eluvial (E) horizon of a podzol, and possibly in the illuvial (B) horizon of a podzol and in an acid clayey till (Dystric Cambisol). Low P uptake was associated with a tendency towards higher relative root growth rates. In terms of the concept of steady state nutrition the high relative root growth rate in some treatments may be interpreted as an acclimation to low P supply. The P limitation seemed to be related to interactions among Fe, Al and organic compounds of the soil solution.

    Notes: Abstract Soil samples were collected from the litter, humus and five mineral soil layers to a depth of 50 cm in acid, but highly productive, Norway spruce forests in S Sweden and E Denmark for determination of net N mineralization and potential nitrification. The samples were sieved while still fresh and incubated at a constant temperature (15°C) and soil moisture for 74–117 days with periodic subsamplings. Net N mineralization rates, expressed per g organic matter or per g of total N, decreased with increasing depth. Net N mineralization in the ten soils studied ranged from 35 to 105 kg N ha- yr-1, of which the organic horizons contributed 32–74%. Nitrate formation patterns were variable. Almost no nitrification could be detected at pH (H2O) values lower than 4.0. Nitrate was formed in humus layers with pH values of 4.0–4.5, but the nitrification was never complete. By contrast, the nitrification was almost complete at a depth of 10–50 cm, where the pH (H2O) was 4.1–4.5. Addition of CaCO3 stimulated nitrification in the humus layer, indicating the presence of acid-sensitive nitrifiers, while nitrification in the mineral soil was sometimes sthnulated and sometimes inhibited by the addition of CaCO3. Tests with the acetylene block method showed that nitrification, when it occurred, was autotrophic in the humus layer but less easy to characterize in the mineral soil. Thus, further studies are needed to characterize the nitrifier organisms and identify the factors regulating the activity of these organisms. Actual nitrification rates in the field could not be determined, but our findings showed that the B horizon in acid forest soils has a great potential for nitrification. Because N deposition does not appear to decrease in Scandinavian forests, we conclude that an ammonium surplus in the forest floor followed by a downward transport of ammonium to the nitrifying subsoil can increase the risk of nitrate leaching in the future.

    Notes: Abstract Previous laboratory experiments showed that velvet bean Mucuna pruriens is moderately tolerant to the presence of Al (up to 185 µM) in the root environment, but that it only develops a shallow root system in acid soils. Field experiments showed that Mucuna can tolerate acid subsoil conditions in a homogeneous root environment, but avoids subsoil if topsoil is present. Subsequent split-root experiments with a recirculating nutrient solution showed that this subsoil avoidance may be based on an Al avoidance mechanism in the root system. This Al avoidance mechanism, however, was not evident when phosphorus (P) supply to the whole plant was adequate. We thus hypothesized that surface application of P may help to overcome Al avoidance in the subsoil. In a field experiment on an ultisol in Lampung (Indonesia), only a moderate increase in aboveground biomass production was found for a wide range of P application rates, although the soil was low in available P, and the P adsorption isotherm was very steep. An increased P status of the topsoil and an increased P concentration in the aboveground biomass (from 50 to 75 mmol kg-1) had no effect on root development in the subsoil.

    Notes: Abstract The modelling of ion uptake by plants requires the measurement of kinetic and growth parameters under specific conditions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of nine NH inf4 sup+ :NO inf3 sup− ratios on onions (Allium cepa L.). Twenty-eight to 84 day-old onion plants were treated with NH inf4 sup+ :NOf3/sup− ratios ranging from 0 to 100% of each ionic species in one mM solutions in a growth chamber. Maximum N influx (Imax) was assessed using the N depletion method. Except at an early stage, ionic species did not influence significantly Imax, the Michaelis constant (Km) and the minimum concentration for net uptake (Cmin). Imax for ammonium decreased from 101 to 59 pmole cm-2 s-1 while Imax for nitrate increased from 26 to 54 pmole cm-2 s-1 as the plant matured. On average, Km and Cmin values were 14.29 μM, and 5.06 μM for ammonium, and 11.90 μM and 4.54 μM for nitrate, respectively. In general, the effect of NH4 +:NO3 - ratios on root weight, shoot weight and total weight depended on plant age. At an early stage, maximum plant growth and N uptake were obtained with ammonium as the sole source of N. At later stages, maximum plant growth and N uptake were obtained as the proportion of nitrate increased in the nutrient solution. The was no apparent nutrient deficiency whatever NH4 +:NO3 - ratio was applied, although ammonium reduced the uptake of cations and increased the uptake of phosphorus.

    Notes: Abstract We tested the effect of two single species inocula and a mixed inoculum of the native population of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi on the growth response of “criollo” maize (Zea mays L.). To determine the inocula that produced the highest response on maize growth, we conducted a greenhouse experiment at 3 levels of P fertilization (0, 40 and 80 kg ha−1). Inoculation with Glomus mosseae (Nicolson and Gerdemann) Gerd. and Trappe (LMSS) produced the greatest shoot growth rates at the two lowest P fertilization levels. Inoculation with Acaulospora bireticulata Rothwell and Trappe (ABRT) and the native population (NP) resulted in similar shoot growth rates at all P levels. These rates were higher than the non-mycorrhizal control rate at the lowest P level but lower than the control at the highest P level. Also, ABRT and NP had significantly lower shoot growth rates than the inoculation treatment with G. mosseae at all P levels. The non-mycorrhizal control had the lowest growth rate at the lowest P level but its growth rate increased linearly with increased P fertilization. Inoculation with G. mosseae and A. bireticulata produced similar colonization rates which were lower than the native population colonization rate. There was no correlation between colonization and shoot growth rates.

    Notes: Abstract Radiata pine (Pinus radiata) and cocksfoot grass (Dactylis glomerata) were grown in small pots containing grassland soils collected from seven sites in the South Island montane zone. After one year the overall mean dry matter yield of pine exceeded that of grass by a factor of 2.6, and uptake of all nutrients by pine was substantially greater. Mean soil pH was 0.3 units lower after pine growth than after grass. Organic carbon (C), total nitrogen (N), and organic phosphorus (P) levels were 15–19% lower after pine, while total P was 7% lower. Despite greater nutrient uptake by pine, mean mineralisable N and sulphate sulphur (S) levels in the soil were 500% and 200% higher respectively after pine growth than after grass. Inorganic and Bray-2 P levels were 10% and 20% higher respectively. Grass obtained almost all of its P from the inorganic pool, while pine obtained P from both inorganic and organic pools, though mostly from the latter. It is concluded that the differences observed in C, N, and P concentrations in soil indicate higher rates of mineralisation of soil organic matter in the presence of radiata pine than in the presence of cocksfoot grass. Possible implications for pastoral hill land use in New Zealand are discussed. It is suggested that pines incorporated into farming systems either on a rotational basis, or in wide-spaced agroforestry regimes, may be able to increase the rate of mineralisation of organic P, and also of N and S, and increase their availability to pasture species.

    Notes: Abstract Ten Triticum aestivum and two Triticum turgidum conv. durum genotypes differing in Zn efficiency were grown in chelate-buffered nutrient solution at Zn supplies ranging from deficient to sufficient (free Zn activities from 2 to 200 pM, pZn from 11.7 to 9.7). Correlation between the rate of Zn uptake and the Zn efficiency ranking was poor. Uptake of Zn by all genotypes increased linearly with an increase in solution Zn activities, with a slight saturation apparent at 200 pM. Relative amounts of Zn and Fe transported to shoots increased with duration of growth and at higher supply of Zn. With an increase in solution Zn activities, uptake rates of Fe, Mn and Cu dropped in Zn-efficient genotypes and increased in Zn-inefficient ones. While shoot concentrations of Fe did not differ between Zn-efficient and inefficient genotypes at ≥10 pM Zn activity, root Fe concentrations were around 3-fold higher in Zn-efficient genotypes at 2 pM Zn activity. All genotypes accumulated high amounts of P in shoots after 22 d of growth at deficient Zn supply. It is concluded that nutrient interactions, especially at deficient Zn supply, may be influential in determining the level of Zn efficiency of wheat genotypes.

    Notes: Abstract The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that afforestation changes the content and distribution of soil organic carbon, nutrients and pH in the A-horizon of land previously used in agriculture, and that such soil changes depend on stand development. The investigation was evaluated as a completely randomised design with three treatments representing different age classes of trees: 20 years (Y20), 40 years (Y40) and 55 years (Y55). Eighteen trial plots, six per treatment, were established in plantations of Picea abies (L.) Karst. on soils of similar texture and mineralogy. Tree volume was 220 m3 ha-1 in Y20, 400 in Y40 and 440 m3 ha-1 in Y55. Concentrations of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) were significantly higher in the uppermost part of the soil in the older stands Y40 and Y55 than in Y20. The total amount of organic C in the litter layer plus the top 15 cm of the soil differed between age classes, with Y40 and Y55 having the largest amounts. A reference layer (15–20 cm) was used in calculating the amount of soil C that had accumulated in the horizon since afforestation, being about 10 tonnes ha-1 of C in Y20 and 19 tonnes ha-1 in Y40 and Y55. Cation exchange capacity (CEC) and base saturation (BS) was higher in the older stands. Carbon contents and CEC were strongly correlated. In Y40 and Y55, pH was significantly lower than in Y20 in the lower part of the soil horizon. There was a general decrease with depth of C, N, CEC, K+ and Mg2+ in the soil horizon. BS, Ca2+, Na+ and pH showed a somewhat different pattern of distribution, with deceasing values in the upper part of the soil horizon and increasing values in the lower part of the soil horizon.

    Notes: Abstract Nutrient uptake by forest trees is largely dependent on their associated ectomycorrhizal fungi. The presence of extramatrical mycelium produced by ectomycorrhizal fungi allows trees to exploit a larger soil volume. In this paper the effects of macronutrients on the production of extramatrical mycelium are reviewed. It is concluded that elevated levels of nitrogen and, to some extent, phosphorus strongly inhibit the development of extramatrical mycelium. A deficiency of phosphorus, on the other hand, stimulates ectomycorrhizal development. Low levels of phosphorus may offset the negative influence of nitrogen, indicating that the nitrogen effect is indirect. No other macronutrients have been shown to affect extramatrical mycelium significantly, however, very few studies have been made. To explain reduced ectomycorrhizal development under conditions of high N availability, it has been suggested that the host would allocate less carbohydrate to the mycobiont under such conditions owing to a greater demand for carbon by growing shoots. In the present paper an alternative explanation is suggested: The fungus is forced to take up all available nitrogen and must therefore consume the available carbohydrate in order to assimilate it. The surplus of carbohydrates after nitrogen assimilation can then be used to produce fungal mycelium and fruit bodies. However, the total allocation of host carbohydrate to the mycorrhizal fungus is not reduced at elevated levels of N supply. In contrast with previous theories, the present one proposes that it is the fungus, rather than the host which adjusts its carbon allocation patterns to the N supply.

    Notes: Abstract Plantations of radiata pine (P. radiata D.Don) on soils previously under legume based pastures have a high incidence of stem deformity compared with forest soils. A comparison of soil properties and tree nutrition of 5 to 7 year-old radiata pine on former pastures in the first part of the study showed that stem deformity was strongly correlated with mineralisation of soil N and in particular with nitrification. Other soil properties that have changed as a result of pasture improvement, e.g. pH, available P and Mn, were only partially correlated with stem deformity. In the second part of the study, the role of N availability and other soil properties in the expression of deformity was further investigated in a separate field experiment on soils formerly under native eucalypt forest, tobacco cropping, and improved pasture. Young radiata pine plantings were treated with lime, phosphorus, and nitrogen applied as urea and sodium nitrate. Liming increased soil pH by around 1.5 units, raised exchangeable Ca2+ and decreased available Mn. Soil mineral N content was only marginally affected by liming. Superphosphate increased soil available P and raised levels of P in foliage. Changes in soil pH, availability of P, Mn, and B did not affect growth or stem deformity at any of the sites. In contrast, application of N fertilisers at 200 and 600 kg N ha-1 increased mineral N content and stimulated nitrification, particularly at the forest site. The high rate of N fertiliser increased basal area at the forest site by 45%, but also raised the level of stem deformity from 12% to 56%. At the tobacco and pasture sites, this treatment did not increase growth and did not significantly raise stem deformity above the already high basic level of deformity (63%). Implications of stem deformity in young plantations of radiata pine on potential utilisation later in the rotation are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Increased atmospheric deposition of N might eventually lead to P deficiency. The relation between needle P concentration and acid phosphatase activity in the humus layer was studied during 1990–93 in a Norway spruce stand where the water and N and P supplies had been experimentally manipulated since 1988. Treatments included control (C), yearly application of ammonium sulphate (NS), N-free fertilizer (V), granulated wood ash (A), irrigation (I), drought (D) and water plus nutrients in an “optimum” combination (IF). We found indications of a feed-back mechanism for P, where low concentrations in the needles were associated with increased acid phosphatase activity in the humus layer. Acid phosphatase estimations made during moist soil conditions were much more informative than those made during dry conditions. We further argue that a site-specific “base-line” exists for acid phosphatase activity in the soil, mainly originating from enzymes immobilized in the field, but active in the assay. Increased phosphatase activity, above the base line, was generally found in the A, I and NS treatments, but in some cases also in C. Although P and N concentrations were significantly higher in the IF treatment as compared to the C and the D treatments, the P as fraction of N was 0.10 and thus balanced in all cases. In the A and I treatment P:N was around 0.09, while it was only 0.07 in the NS treatment, mainly due to high N concentrations. The latter treatment thus created an imbalanced situation where P additions most likely would have increased tree growth.

    Notes: Abstract The distributions of vascular plants in south Swedish deciduous forests were related to exchangeable (exc) and soil solution concentrations of H+ (pH), Ca, Al and the Ca:Al ratios within these fractions. Topsoils (0–5 cm) of 172 sites with a pHKCl of 3.2–3.9 (corresponding to 3.7–4.4 in soil solution) were used. In the soil solution both total Alt and quickly reacting Alr were determined. Exchangeable concentrations were generally well related to plant distributions, the highest correlation coefficients usually being given by pHKCl〉Caexc〉Alexc.〉(Ca:Al)exc. The (Ca:Al)exc ratio was clearly inferior. Out of the soil solution variables studied, Ca concentration, followed by pH, was best correlated with plant distributions, Alt, Alr, and the Ca:Al ratios having similar and lower coefficients. It is concluded that the use of Ca:Al ratios as a general measure of Al toxicity in controlling plant distributions is rather problematic. It seems difficult to apply evidence for Ca-Al interactions from solution culture experiments to field conditions when measured as exchangeable or soil solution concentrations of the soil.

    Notes: Abstract Herbs and grasses may episodically be exposed to elevated concentrations of potentially toxic elements as H+ and Al3+ due to considerable temporal variability in the chemical composition of soil solutions in the uppermost layer of the soil profile. Greenhouse experiments were performed to test the effect of episodes of different length (1 and 2 weeks) and concentrations of H+ and Al3+ (pH 3.8, 4.0, 4.2 and 4.5; 0, 20 and 70 μM Al) on root and shoot growth, designed to elucidiate the reversibility of growth inhibition. Three forest floor species were studied-Galium odoratum and Lamium galeobdolon, having similar pH distribution ranges in the field and Poa nemoralis which also occurs at slightly lower pH. The plants were grown for 5 weeks (episode and recovering time) in a synthetic soil solution in a flowing solution system without recirculation. The species reacted in three different ways. Galium odoratum was the most sensitive species and seemed to be irreversibly damaged (ceased growth) by 2 week episodes of pH≤4.0 and Al≥20 μM at pH≤4.2. Lamium galeobdolon was about equally sensitive during the episodes but it had a much greater ability to recover. Poa nemoralis was rather insensitive to the episode treatments tested. It is concluded that episodes of elevated H+ and Al3+ concentrations may be decisive for plant performance. It is therefore important to consider the extreme environmental conditions which plants may be exposed to in the field, in addition to long-term averages of e.g. soil solution concentration of potentially toxic elements, when studying species distribution and performance in relation to soil chemical properties.

    Notes: Abstract Climatic and soil factors are limiting rice growth in many countries. In Vietnam, a steep gradient of temperature is observed from the North to the South, and acid sulphate soils are frequently devoted to rice production. We have therefore attempted to understand how temperature affects rice growth in these problem soils, by comparison with rice grown in nutrient solution. Two varieties of rice, IR64 and X2, were cultivated in phytotrons at 19/21°C and 28/32°C (day/night) for 56 days, after 3 weeks preculture in optimal conditions. Two soils from the Mekong Delta were tested. Parallel with the growing experiments, these two soils were incubated in order to monitor redox potential (E h ), pH, soluble Al and Fe, soluble, and available P. Tillering retardation at 20°C compared to 30°C was similar in nutrient solutions and in soils. The effect of temperature on increasing plant biomass was more marked in solutions than in soils. The P concentrations in roots and shoots were higher at 20°C than at 30°C, to such an extent that detrimental effect was suspected in plants grown in solution at the lowest temperature. The translocation of Fe from roots to shoots was stimulated upon rising temperature, both in solutions and in soils. This led to plant death on the most acid soil at 30°C. Indeed, the accumulation of Fe in plants grown on soils was enhanced by the release of Fe2+ due to reduction of Fe(III)-oxihydroxides. Severe reducing conditions were created at 30°C: redox potential (E h ) dropped rapidly down to about 0 V. At 20°C, E h did not drop below about 0.2 V, which is a value well in the range of Fe(III)/Fe(II) buffering. Parallel to E h drop, pH increased up to about 6–6.5 at 30°C, which prevented plants from Al toxicity, even in the most acid soil. Phosphate behavior was obviously related to Fe-dynamics: more reducing conditions at 30°C have resulted in enhancement of available P, especially in the most acid soil.

    Notes: Abstract A model of the interacting global carbon and nitrogen cycles (CQUESTN) is developed to explore the possible history of C-sequestration into the terrestrial biosphere in response to the global increases (past and possible future) in atmospheric CO2 concentration, temperature and N-deposition. The model is based on published estimates of pre-industrial C and N pools and fluxes into vegetation, litter and soil compartments. It was found necessary to assign low estimates of N pools and fluxes to be compatible with the more firmly established C-cycle data. Net primary production was made responsive to phytomass N level, and to CO2 and temperature deviation from preindustrial values with sensitivities covering the ranges in the literature. Biological N-fixation could be made either unresponsive to soil C:N ratio, or could act to tend to restore the preindustrial C:N of humus with different N-fixation intensities. As for all such simulation models, uncertainties in both data and functional relationships render it more useful for qualitative evaluation than for quantitative prediction. With the N-fixation response turned off, the historic CO2 increase led to standard-model sequestration into terrestrial ecosystems in 1995AD of 1.8 Gt C yr−1. With N-fixation restoring humus C:N strongly, C sequestration was 3 Gt yr−1 in 1995. In both cases C:N of phytomass and litter increased with time and these increases were plausible when compared with experimental data on CO2 effects. The temperature increase also caused net C sequestration in the model biosphere because decrease in soil organic matter was more than offset by the increase in phytomass deriving from the extra N mineralised. For temperature increase to reduce system C pool size, the biosphere “leakiness” to N would have to increase substantially with temperature. Assuming a constant N-loss coefficient, the historic temperature increase alone caused standard-model net C sequestration to be about 0.6 Gt C in 1995. Given the disparity of plant and microbial C:N, the modelled impact of anthropogenic N-deposition on C-sequestration depends substantially on whether the deposited N is initially taken up by plants or by soil microorganisms. Assuming the latter, standard-model net sequestration in 1995 was 0.2 Gt C in 1995 from the N-deposition effect alone. Combining the effects of the historic courses of CO2, temperature and N-deposition, the standard-model gave C-sequestration of 3.5 Gt in 1995. This involved an assumed weak response of biological N-fixation to the increased carbon status of the ecosystem. For N-fixation to track ecosystem C-fixation in the long term however, more phosphorus must enter the biological cycle. New experimental evidence shows that plants in elevated CO2 have the capacity to mobilize more phosphorus from so-called “unavailable” sources using mechanisms involving exudation of organic acids and phosphatases.

    Notes: Abstract Atmospheric CO2 concentrations can influence ecosystem carbon storage through net primary production (NPP), soil carbon storage, or both. In assessing the potential for carbon storage in terrestrial ecosystems under elevated CO2, both NPP and processing of soil organic matter (SOM), as well as the multiple links between them, must be examined. Within this context, both the quantity and quality of carbon flux from roots to soil are important, since roots produce specialized compounds that enhance nutrient acquisition (affecting NPP), and since the flux of organic compounds from roots to soil fuels soil microbial activity (affecting processing of SOM). From the perspective of root physiology, a technique is described which uses genetically engineered bacteria to detect the distribution and amount of flux of particular compounds from single roots to non-sterile soils. Other experiments from several labs are noted which explore effects of elevated CO2 on root acid phosphatase, phosphomonoesterase, and citrate production, all associated with phosphorus nutrition. From a soil perspective, effects of elevated CO2 on the processing of SOM developed under a C4 grassland but planted with C3 California grassland species were examined under low (unamended) and high (amended with 20 g m−2 NPK) nutrients; measurements of soil atmosphere δ13C combined with soil respiration rates show that during vegetative growth in February, elevated CO2 decreased respiration of carbon from C4 SOM in high nutrient soils but not in unamended soils. This emphasis on the impacts of carbon loss from roots on both NPP and SOM processing will be essential to understanding terrestrial ecosystem carbon storage under changing atmospheric CO2 concentrations.

    Notes: Abstract Maize (Zea mays L.) haploid cells were cultivated in a 1500 ml aerated and stirred batch bioreactor using modified BM medium. Cell growth was highly affected by pH and dissolved oxygen, and we observed two fairly distinct growth phases. During the first two days after inoculation at pH 5.8, oxygen consumption was high and the cells lowered the pH to a value around 4.3. After this period the pH stabilized at 4.5 and the dissolved oxygen reached a steady level. Decreasing dissolved oxygen concentration leads to lower growth rate and to higher pH. Both events mean stress conditions for the cell culture and probably result in increased genetic variability, and the loss of regeneration capacity. The stress condition during the adaptation phase can be eliminated by decreasing the pH of the medium to 4.7 before inoculation and by keeping dissolved oxygen above 40%. These conditions provide prolonged exponential growth dynamics and the cell suspensions could be the basis of large scale cultures also.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of 3 species of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi on the growth of Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) De Wit. in a phosphorus-deficient and aluminumsulfate (AIS)-treated medium was investigated in a screenhouse experiment. Plant height, root length, nodulation, phosphorus uptake and nitrogen fixation were used as indices of plant performance. While there were significant differences among mycorrhizal plants with respect to these indices, they outperformed their non-mycorrhizal counterparts in all respects except in nitrogen content. Of the 3 mycorrhizal species studied, Glomus etunicatum (Becker and Gerd) was the most efficient, followed by Glomus fasciculatum (Thaxter) Gerd and Trappe, and finally, Gigaspora margarita (Becker and Hall). Both aluminumsulfate and mycorrhizal treatments increased shoot dry weight.

    Notes: Abstract Data on phosphate excretion rates of zooplankton are based on measurements using the pelagic crustacean zooplankton of Lake Vechten and laboratory-cultured Daphnia galeata. In case of Daphnia sp we measured the effects of feeding on P-rich algae and P-poor algae (Scenedesmus) as food on the P-excretion rates at 20°C. The excretion rates of the natural zooplankton community, irrespective of the influence of the factors mentioned, varied by an order of magnitude: 0.025–0.275µg PO4-Pmg−1C in zooplankton (C zp ) h−1. The temperature accounted for about half the observed variation in excretion rates. The mean excretion rates in the lake, computed for 20°C, varied between 0.141 and 0.260 µg Pmg−1C zp h−1. Based on data of zooplankton biomass in the lake the P-regeneration rates by zooplankton covered between 22 and 239% of the P-demand of phytoplankton during the different months of the study period. In D. galeata, whereas the C/P ratios of the Scenedesmus used as food differed by a factor 5 in the experiments, the excretion rates differed by factor 3 only. Despite the higher P-excretion rates (0.258± 0.022 µg PO4-P mg−1 C h−1) of the daphnids fed with P-rich food than those fed with P-poor food (0.105 ± 0.047 µg PO4-P mg−1 C hp−1), both the categories of the animals were apparently conserving P. A survey of the literature on zooplankton excretion shows that in Daphnia the excretion rates vary by a factor 30, irrespective of the species and size of animals and method of estimation and temperature used. About two-thirds of this variation can be explained by size and temperature. A major problem of comparability of studies on P-regeneration by zooplankton relates to the existing techniques of P determination, which necessitates concentrating the animals several times above the in situ concentration (crowding) and prolonged experimental duration (starving), both of which manifest in marked changes that probably lead to underestimation of the ‘real’ rates.

    Notes: Abstract Narragansett Bay is a relatively well-mixed, high salinity coastal embayment and estuary complex in southern New England (USA). Much of the shoreline is urban and the watershed is densely developed. We have combined our data on C, N, and P inputs to this system, on C, N, and P accumulation in the sediments, and on denitrification with extensive work by others to develop approximate annual mass balances for these elements. The results show that primary production within the bay is the major source of organic carbon (4 times greater than other sources), that land drainage and upstream sewage and fertilizer are the major sources of N, and that landward flowing bottom water from offshore may be a major source of dissolved inorganic phosphorus. Most of the nutrients entering the bay arrive in dissolved inorganic form, though DON is a significant component of the N carried by the rivers. About 40% of the DIN in the rivers is in the form of ammonia. Sedimentation rates are low in most of Narragansett Bay, and it appears that less than 20% of the total annual input of each of these elements is retained within the system. A very small amount of C, N, and P is removed in fisheries landings, denitrification in the sediments removes perhaps 10–25% of the N input, and most of the carbon fixed in the system is respired within it. Stoichiometric calculations suggest that some 10–20% of the organic matter formed in the bay is exported to offshore and that Narragansett Bay is an autotrophic system. Most of the N and P that enters the bay is, however, exported to offshore waters in dissolved inorganic form. This assessment of the overall biogeochemical behavior of C, N, and P in the bay is consistent with more rigorously constrained mass balances obtained using large living models or mesocosms of the bay at the Marine Ecosystem Research Laboratory (MERL).

    Notes: Abstract The reaction of cytochromeb 5 with cytochromec has become a very prominent system for investigating fundamental questions regarding interprotein electron transfer. One of the first computer modeling studies of electron transfer and protein/protein interaction was reported using this system. Subsequently, numerous studies focused on the experimental determination of the features which control protein/protein interactions. Kinetic measurements of the intracomplex electron transfer reaction have only appeared in the last 10 years. The current review will provide a summary of the kinetic measurements and a critical assessment of the interpretation of these experiments.

    Notes: Abstract Control and regulation of mitochondrial and cellular respiration by oxygen is discussed with three aims: (1) A review of intracellular oxygen levels and gradients, particularly in heart, emphasizes the dominance of extracellular oxygen gradients. Intracellular oxygen pressure, $$p_{O_2 } $$ , is low, typically one to two orders of magnitude below incubation conditions used routinely for the study of respiratory control in isolated mitochondria. The $$p_{O_2 } $$ range of respiratory control by oxygen overlaps with cellular oxygen profiles, indicating the significance of $$p_{O_2 } $$ in actual metabolic regulation. (2) A methodologically detailed discussion of high-resolution respirometry is necessary for the controversial topic of respiratory control by oxygen, since the risk of methodological artefact is closely connected with far-reaching theoretical implications. Instrumental and analytical errors may mask effects of energetic state and partially explain the divergent views on the regulatory role of intracellular $$p_{O_2 } $$ . Oxygen pressure for half-maximum respiration,p 50, in isolated mitochondria at state 4 was 0.025 kPa (0.2 Torr; 0.3 ΜM O2), whereasp 50 in endothelial cells was 0.06–0.08 kPa (0.5 Torr). (3) A model derived from the thermodynamics of irreversible processes was developed which quantitatively accounts for near-hyperbolic flux/ $$p_{O_2 } $$ relations in isolated mitochondria. The apparentp 50 is a function of redox potential and protonmotive force. The protonmotive force collapses after uncoupling and consequently causes a decrease inp 50. Whereas it is becoming accepted that flux control is shared by several enzymes, insufficient attention is paid to the notion of complementary kinetic and thermodynamic flux control mechanisms.

    Notes: Abstract The kinetic modelling of the respiratory network in plant mitochondria is discussed, with emphasis on the importance of the choice of boundary conditions, and of modelling of both quinol-oxidising and quinone-reducing pathways. This allows quantitative understanding of the interplay between the different pathways, and of the functioning of the plant respiratory network in terms of the kinetic properties of its component parts. The effects of activation of especially succinate dehydrogenase and the cyanide-insensitive alternative oxidase are discussed. Phenomena, such as respiratory control ratios depending on the substrate, shortcomings of the Bahr and Bonner model for electron distribution between the oxidases and reversed respiratory control, are explained. The relation to metabolic control analysis of the respiratory network is discussed in terms of top-down analysis.

    Notes: Abstract Regulation of acid-base homeostasis is essential for mammals and birds. Biotransformation and metabolism of absorbed plant secondary metabolites (PSMs) results in the production of organic acids that threaten acid-base homeostasis. Consequently these acids must be buffered and excreted from the body. The production of an acid load from detoxified PSMs should occur in herbivorous mammals and birds and with most PSMs and so may provide a unifying theme to explain many effects of PSMs on animal metabolism. Since the organic acids will be largely ionized at physiological pH, disposal of the hydrogen ion and the organic anion may proceed independently. Most hydrogen ions (H+) from organic acids are eliminated by one or more of three ways: (1) when they react with bicarbonate in the extracellular fluid to form carbon dioxide and the carbon dioxide is exhaled, (2) when they bind to dibasic phosphate and are excreted by the kidney as monobasic phosphate, and (3) when they are buffered and retained in the skeletal system. The secretion of phosphate ions and ammonium excretion are two ways in which the kidney replaces bicarbonate ions that have been eliminated as carbon dioxide. Secretion in the kidney tubule is an important means of excreting excessive organic anions rapidly. This process is saturable and may be subject to competition from a variety of different metabolites. Lagomorphs have limited capacity to form new bicarbonate from ammonium excretion and may therefore be obliged to excrete other cations such as sodium to balance the excretion of organic anions from PSMs. Acidemia has wide-ranging impacts on animals but browsing mammals and birds may have to break down muscle tissues to provide for urinary ammonium in order to generate bicarbonate for buffering. Acidemia also can affect the extent of urea recycling. Animals consuming browse diets may have to regulate feeding so that the rate of formation of hydrogen ions does not exceed the rate of disposal. The mechanisms by which this could occur are unknown.

    Notes: Abstract A national series of rates × forms of phosphate fertilizer trials has provided a large amount of data on patterns of response of pasture production and soil P tests to forms, rates and frequencies of P fertilizer application over time. A simple mechanistic model of P in pastoral systems has been developed in an attempt to account for the observed patterns. The model considers active P in the soil to be in one of two compartments: undissolved fertilizer P (PF) and a pool of labile, plant-available P (PA). P dissolving from PF enters PA, and P is lost from PA by immobilisation in the soil and by net removal above ground through non-recycled uptake by plants. Both these transfers are taken to follow first order kinetics, with rate constants designated K1 and K2 respectively. Pasture dry matter (DM) production in any year is related to the mid-year value of PA by the diminishing-returns Mitscherlich equation, with nil pasture yield being associated with nil PA. Data from different sites with the same design were combined to give generalised response patterns with which to assess the model. Only the control treatment and treatments receiving triple superphosphate (TSP) and Sechura phosphate rock (SPR) were considered. With a value for K1 corresponding to almost immediate dissolution, the model accounted well for the Olsen soil P test patterns from TSP when K2 corresponded to an annual loss of 16.3% of P in PA and a factor of 10 was used to convert Olsen P to kg P/ha in PA. Pasture DM yield response curves to rates of TSP in individual years were well accounted for when the mid-year value of PA required for 90% relative yield was taken as 130 kg P/ha. The model also accounted well for the difference between response patterns to annual and triennial TSP applications for both soil P tests and DM production. The declines in soil P tests and DM production which occurred in nil P controls were less than model predictions: this could be due to unfertilised pasture making more use of P from greater soil depth or less available forms. Olsen P tests with the higher rates of SPR were always lower than model predictions using a value for K1 derived from chemical measurement of SPR dissolution rates in the trials. However, DM yields from SPR were generally close to model predictions. These divergent results support independent data suggesting that available soil P from reactive phosphate rocks (RPRs) is underestimated by the Olsen P test. The relative success of this simple compartmental model in accounting for generalised response patterns in such a large body of data suggests that it could be a useful starting point for a dynamic P fertilizer recommendation model.
