Beschreibung: There is a frequent need to measure the frequency stability and phase noise levels of very high performance signal sources that are required for certain spacecraft missions. These measurements need to be done at different locations as the spacecraft subsystems progress through the various stages of development, assembly, test, and integration. Allan Deviation and Phase Noise of high performance sources are generally measured by comparing the unit under test to a reference standard. Five basic requirements are associated with making these kind of measurements: (1) the reference standard performance needs to be equal or better than the unit under test; (2) the measurement system needs to accommodate odd, nonstandard measurement frequencies that can range from 4 MHz to 35 GHz; (3) warm-up frequency drift and aging can corrupt a measurement and must be dealt with; (4) test equipment generated noise must be understood and prevented from limiting the measurements; (5) test equipment noise performance must be verifiable in the field as needed. A portable measurement system that was built by JPL and used in the field is described. The methods of addressing the above requirements are outlined and some measurement noise floor values are given. This test set was recently used to measure state of the art crystal oscillator frequency standards on the TOPEX and MARS OBSERVER spacecraft during several stages of acceptance tests.

Beschreibung: A study was conducted to assess the effects of transmitting a precision clock synchronization signal over a commercial multiplexed fiber optic communication system. This study is an evaluation of the distortion and jitter introduced into the signal by this type of transmission system. An analysis comparing signal quality at the multiplexing and demultiplexing ends of the fiber optic communication system shows that the amplitude and phase distortion added to the clock synchronization signal by the transmission system is minimal.

Beschreibung: Historically, Maximum Time Interval Error (MTIE) and Maximum Relative Time Interval Error (MRTIE) have been the main measurement techniques used to characterize timing performance in telecommunications networks. Recently, a new measurement technique, Time Variance (TVAR) has gained acceptance in the North American (ANSI) standards body. TVAR was developed in concurrence with NIST to address certain inadequacies in the MTIE approach. The advantages and disadvantages of each of these approaches are described. Real measurement examples are presented to illustrate the critical issues in actual telecommunication applications. Finally, a new MTIE measurement is proposed (ZTIE) that complements TVAR. Together, TVAR and ZTIE provide a very good characterization of network timing.

Beschreibung: For proper operation of today's large digital private networks, high quality synchronization must be achieved. A general telecommunication performance objective is to maintain long-term frequency accuracy of ten parts per trillion at all synchronous digital equipment in the network. Many times, however, this is not achieved in private networks. Low quality clocks, errored transmission facilities, and incorrectly designed synchronization plans are often cause for poor performance. It is shown that properly-designed private networks can operate with long term frequency averages between ten parts per trillion to ten parts per million. These performance levels can adversely impact customer applications. The most demanding applications are digital and voice band data, encrypted voice, facsimile, and video. In a typical private network operating at 0.01 parts per million, the user would experience reduced data throughput, dropped encrypted calls, unreadable facsimile pages, or interrupted video transmission dozens of times per day. The major contribution to poor private network synchronization performance is the interaction of Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) clocks and the network facilities used to distribute timing. The performance of typical CPE clocks and facilities, and their impact on customer applications, are discussed. CPE clock performance issues, along with private network architectural constraints, make synchronization planning extremely difficult. Planning is usually costly and requires specialized expertise.

Beschreibung: A new method that uses round-trip paths to accurately measure transmission delay for time synchronization is proposed. The performance of the method in Synchronous Digital Hierarchy networks is discussed. The feature of this method is that it separately measures the initial round trip path delay and the variations in round-trip path delay. The delay generated in SDH equipment is determined by measuring the initial round-trip path delay. In an experiment with actual SDH equipment, the error of initial delay measurement was suppressed to 30ns.

Beschreibung: A coded time/date information dissemination system (CTD), based on telephone lines and commercial modems, is now in its experimental phase in Italy at IEN. This service, born from a cooperation with other metrological laboratories (TUG, Austria, SNT, Sweden, VSL, The Netherlands), represents an attempt towards an European standardization. Some results of an experimental analysis in which a few modems were tested, both in laboratory conditions and connected to the telephone network, in order to evaluate the timing capability of the system are given. When the system is used in a one-way mode, in many practical cases the modems delay turns out to be the main factor which limits the accuracy, even more than the telephone line delays. If the two-way mode is used, the modems asymmetry, i.e., the delay difference between transmission and reception, is almost always the most important source of uncertainty, provided the link is not including a space segment. Comparing the widely used V.22 modems to the old V.21 ones, the latters turn out to be better both in delay time (30-100 ms V.22, and 7-15 ms V.21) and asymmetry (10-50 micro-s V.22, and 10 ms V.22). Time transfer accuracies of 10 micron-s (same turn) to 100 micro-s (long distance calls) were obtained in two-way mode with commercial V.21 modems.

Beschreibung: Millisecond pulsars are galactic objects that exhibit a very stable spinning period. Several tens of these celestial clocks have now been discovered, which opens the possibility that an average time scale may be deduced through a long-term stability algorithm. Such an ensemble average makes it possible to reduce the level of the instabilities originating from the pulsars or from other sources of noise, which are unknown but independent. The basis for such an algorithm is presented and applied to real pulsar data. It is shown that pulsar time could shortly become more stable than the present atomic time, for averaging times of a few years. Pulsar time can also be used as a flywheel to maintain the accuracy of atomic time in case of temporary failure of the primary standards, or to transfer the improved accuracy of future standards back to the present.

Beschreibung: The knowledge of vegetation dielectric behavior is important in studying the scattering properties of the vegetation canopy and radar backscatter modelling. Until now, a limited number of studies have been published on the dielectric properties in the boreal forest context. This paper presents the results of the dielectric constant as a function of depth in the trunks of two common boreal forest species: black spruce and trembling aspen, obtained from field measurements. The microwave penetration depth for the two species is estimated at C, L, and P bands and used to derive the equivalent dielectric constant for the trunk as a whole. The backscatter modelling is carried out in the case of black spruce and the results are compared with the JPL AIRSAR data. The sensitivity of the backscatter coefficient to the dielectric constant is also examined.

Beschreibung: We compare model predictions of cometary water group ion densities and the solar wind slow down with measurements made by the Giotto Johnstone plasma analyzer implanted ion sensor at the encounter with comet Grigg-Skjellerup (G-S) on July 10, 1992. The observed slope of the ion density profile on approach to the comet is unexpectedly steep. Possible explanations for this are discussed. We present also a preliminary investigation of the quasilinear velocity-space diffusion of the implanted heavy ion population at G-S using a transport equation including souce, convection, adiabatic compression, and velocity diffusion terms. Resulting distributions are anisotropic, in agreement with observations. We consider theoretically the waves that may be generated by the diffusion process for the observed solar wind conditions. At initial ion injections, waves are generated at omega approximately Omega(sub i) the ion gyrofrequency, and lower frequencies are predicted for diffusion toward a bispherical shell.

Beschreibung: Large-amplitude ultralow-frequency wave structure observed on both sides of the magnetic pileup boundary of comet P/Halley during the flyby of the Giotto spacecraft have been analyzed using suprathermal electron density and magnetic field observations. Upstream of the boundary, electron density and magnetic field magnitude variations are anticorrelated, while in the pileup region these quantities are clearly correlated. Both in front of and behind the pileup boundary the observed waves are quasi-perpendicular wave structures as a minimum variance analysis shows. A detailed comparison of our observations in the prepileup region with theoretical and numerical results shows that the mirror mode mode waves may have been generated by a mirror instability driven by the pressure anisotropy of the ring-type distributions of the heavy (water group) pickup cometary ions.

Beschreibung: Solid state SiS2 is proposed as the material responsible for the recently discovered 21 micrometer emission feature that is observed in the carbon-rich circumstellar shells of certain protoplanetary nebulae. Sulfurized SiC, or SiS2 mantles on grains of either SiC or a:C-H are discussed as possible forms for which no spectroscopic laboratory observations yet exist. The identification with a relatively minor species and required special abundance ratios are consistent with the low incidence rate that the 21 micrometer feature presents in the population of carbon rich objects. It is also consistent with the lack of a good correlation between the 21 micrometer feature and the other solid-state spectroscopic features that have been observed in protoplanetaries that would be expected if the feature arose from molecules composed of H, C, N, and O. SiS2 condensate is consistent with the circumstellar shell temperature range, T(sub CS) approximately equal to or less than 150 K, at which the feature appears, and the available mass of SiS2, M(sub SiS2) approx. = 5 x 10(exp -6) solar mass, that is possible in the circumstellar shell.

Beschreibung: Because changes in the Earth's environment have become major global issues, continuous, longterm scientific information is required to assess global problems such as deforestation, desertification, greenhouse effects and climate variations. Global change studies require understanding of interactions of complex processes regulating the Earth system. Space-based Earth observation is an essential element in global change research for documenting changes in Earth environment. It provides synoptic data for conceptual predictive modeling of future environmental change. This paper provides a brief overview of remote sensing technology from the perspective of global change research.

Beschreibung: We present six ROSAT Position-Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) observations of Seyfert 1 galaxies chosen to have low Galactic line-of-sight absorption (N(sub H) approx. = 10(exp 20)/sq cm). As expected, it is found that all of these sources possess significantly steeper spectra below approximately 1 keV, than that observed at higher X-ray energies. In addition we find evidence for soft X-ray spectral features, which are best parameterized as line emission at approximately 0.63 keV in NGC7469 and approximately 0.75 keV in ESO198-G24. We examine these results in the light of the accuracy of the PSPC spectral calibration. We suggest that Seyfert galaxies are a class of object whose spectra are similar to the diffuse X-ray background in the soft X-ray band. We suggest these data provide the first direct evidence that the sources which dominate the background differ as a function of energy.

Beschreibung: NASA's Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) carries three scientific instruments to make precise measurements of the spectrum and anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation on angular scales greater than 7 deg and to conduct a search for a diffuse cosmic infrared background (CIB) radiation with 0.7 deg angular resolution. Data from the Far-Infrared Absolute Spectrophotometer (FIRAS) show that the spectrum of the CMB is that of a blackbody of temperature T = 2.73 +/- 0.06 K, with no deviation from a blackbody spectrum greater than 0.25% of the peak brightness. The first year of data from the Differential Microwave Radiometers (DMR) show statistically significant CMB anisotropy. The anisotropy is consistent with a scale invariant primordial density fluctuation spectrum. Infrared sky brightness measurements from the Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE) provide new conservative upper limits to the CIB. Extensive modeling of solar system and galactic infrared foregrounds is required for further improvement in the CIB limits.

Beschreibung: We report on the evolution in the X-ray spectrum of the transient X-ray pulsar EXO 2030+375 during part of an outburst in 1985 May-August. The overall continuum spectral shape is similar to that of other accreting pulsars and can be represented by a power-law spectrum modified at low energies by significant absorption and at high-energies either by an exponential cut-off or by the effects of cyclotron scattering. As the luminosity decreased by a factor of approximately 100, the X-ray spectrum became harder with the photon index decreasing from 1.83 +/- 0.01 to 1.29 +/- 0.01. In addition, the high-energy cutoff decreased from 20 to 10 keV during the same interval. If the cutoff is interpreted in terms of cyclotron resonance scattering, then this implies a magnetic field strength that decreased from 2.6 x 10(exp 12) G to 1.3 x 10(exp 12) G. This variation implies that the cutoff energy does not provide a reliable measure of the surface magnetic field strength in this system.

Beschreibung: A more appropriate title for this talk would have been 'Measurements of Large Scale Structure from X-ray Background Fluctuations'. While it has long been recognized that the X-ray Background (XRB) is primarily of a cosmological origin (with z less than a few), it has recently become apparent that surface brightness fluctuations in the surveys of the XRB can be used to trace the distribution of matter in much the same way as complete catalogs of individual objects. The distance which is probed is related to the angular resolution of the detector; for the HEAO-1 A2 experiment, which provides the best all-sky data base for the XRB in the 2-20 keV band, the effective depth is a few 100 Mpc.

Beschreibung: In 1970 the International Astronomical Union (IAU) defined any object's north pole to be that axis of rotation which lies north of the solar system's invariable plane. A competing definition in widespread use at some institutions followed the 'right hand rule' whereby the 'north' axis of rotation was generally said to be that of the rotational angular momentum. In the case of the latter definition, the planet Neptune and its satellite Triton would have their 'north' poles in opposite hemispheres because Triton's angular momentum vector is in the hemisphere opposite from that of Neptune's rotation angular momentum. The IAU resolutions have been somewhat controversial in some quarters ever since their adoption. A Working Group has periodically updated the recommended values of planet and satellite poles and rotation rates in accordance with the IAU definition of north and the IAU definition of prime meridian. Neither system is completely satisfactory in the perception of all scientists, and some confusion has been generated by publishing data in the two different systems. In this paper we review the IAU definitions of north and of the location of prime meridian and we present the algorithm which has been employed in determining the rotational parameters of the natural satellites. The IAU definition of the prime meridian contains some ambiguities which in practice have been 'specified' by the numerical values published by the IAU working group but which have not yet been explicitly documented. The purpose of this paper is to explicitly document the algorithm employed by the IAU working group in specifying satellite poles and rotation rates.

Beschreibung: Small hydrocarbon grains in the vicinity of a supernova could be annealed by the absorption of several far-ultraviolet photons to produce the tiny diamonds found in meteorites. These freshly-synthesized diamond grains would be bombarded by the heavy ions and neutrals in the supernovae outflow and would thereby acquire the distinctive noble-gas isotopic signature by which they were first isolated. Only diamonds formed relatively close to supernovae would acquire such a signature, since grains formed farther out would be subjected to a much diluted and less energetic plasma environment.

Beschreibung: We have considered equilibrium configurations of a white dwarf and a red dwarf companion in AM Herculis type binary system where the red dwarf is assumed to have an intrinsic centered dipole field, and the white dwarf an offset dipole or a centered dipole plus a quadrupole field, and the interaction is purely magnetic. The restoring torque, due to the system being perturbed from its stable equilibrium configuration, is compared with the accretion torque. The results are used to show that the observed alignment of the main cyclotron emission region relative to the red star can be explained quite simply by these models without having to invoke gravitational torques. We also provide a possible explanation of the observation that the more strongly accreting pole has the weaker field strength in the few systems where fields have been determined at both poles.

Beschreibung: IUE observations taken during the 1988 January normal outburst of Z Cha are presented and a detailed comparison with the 1987 April superoutburst is made. The most important difference from the superoutburst is that the normal outburst continuum flux shows less than 10 percent orbital variation away from the eclipse, implying that there is no 'cool' bulge on the disk to occult the brighter inner disk periodically. The implications for the outburst mechanism in the types of outburst are discussed. The evolution of the continuum flux distribution and emission-line fluxes, the modulation of the continuum and line fluxes with orbital phase, and the behavior of the mideclipse spectral during normal outburst are investigated.

Beschreibung: A detailed spectral analysis of five X-ray observations of Mrk 841 with the EXOSAT, Ginga, and ROSAT satellites is reported. Variability is apparent in both the soft (0.1-1.0 keV) and medium (1-20 keV) energy bands. Above, 1 keV, the spectra are adequately modeled by a power law with a strong emission line of equivalent width 450 eV. The large equivalent width of the emission line indicates a strongly enhanced reflection component of the source compared with other Seyferts observed with Ginga. The implications of the results of the analysis for physical models of the emission regions in this and other X-ray bright Seyferts are briefly examined.

Beschreibung: The hard X-ray spectrum of AGNs is nonthermal, probably arising from an electron-positron pair cascade, with some emission reflected off relatively cold matter. There has been interest in models on which protons are accelerated and create relativistic electrons on interaction with a local radiation field. It is shown here that a sufficient column density of protons can lead to runaway pair production: photons generated by the relativistic pairs are the targets for the protons to produce more pairs. This can produce X-ray fluxes with the characteristics observed in AGN. The model predicts the maximum ratio of luminosity to source size as well as their spectrum in the early phases. The same mechanism may also be able to create the knots of synchrotron-radiating pair plasma seen in sources such as 3C273.

Beschreibung: The contribution of scattered light to the total nebular emission is determined on the basis of linear polarization measurements at 1.25, 1.65, and 2.2 microns of the visual reflection nebulae NGC 7023 and NGC 2023. The percentage polarization of NGC 7023 slowly increases from 0.3 to 1 micron, with peak polarizations of up to 26 percent at 1.25 micron, then rapidly decreases, with values of 4-7 percent at 2.2 microns. This is interpreted as implying that scattered starlight contributes most to the SW emission, while unpolarized emission from small grains or large molecules dominates at longer wavelengths. IR polarization and surface brightness measurements are combined to derive the intensity of scattered light, which is then compared with scattering models. While the near-IR emission of both NGC 2023 and NGC 7023 is dominated by small-grain or large-molecule emission, IR scattered light plays a larger role in NGC 2023 than in NGC 7023.

Beschreibung: The existence of the periodic component seen in NGC 6814 with Exosat at 12,000 +/- 100 s is confirmed by a power spectrum and folded light curve analysis of unevenly sampled Ginga data. A comparison of the power spectra produced from simulated light curves with that observed enables the intrinsic shape of the power spectrum of the source to be determined despite the distortions introduced by the window function. The best estimate for the period is 12,132 +/- 3 s, where the error is that derived from simulations. An upper limit to the rate of change of period of about 10 exp -9 is inferred if the light curves are truly phase-coherent, but as this is not required by the data, the conservative upper limit is not greater than 5 x 10 exp -7. The large amount of power in the periodic component and its stability both suggest occultation of the source as its origin.

Beschreibung: The collapse of cold, initially spherical systems with varying degrees of central condensation is investigated. The way in which the final shape of a collapsing system depends on the initial density law is examined. For an initial stellar number density rho varies as r exp -n, where n is in the range 0-2.5, the final, nearly prolate shape is given by a/c is approximately equal to 1.28(1 + 0.16 n), where a/c is the ratio of long to short axes of the inertia ellipsoid computed from the moment of inertia tensor of the most tightly bound 80 percent of the mass. The properties associated with the final states in the present computations are also studied. The collapsing systems develop an anisotropic halo dominated by radial orbits surrounding an isotropic core as predicted by Burkert (1990).

Beschreibung: Gamma radiation above 100 MeV in energy has been detected from the radio pulsar PSR1706-44. The gamma emission forms a single broad peak within the pulsar period of 102 ms, in contrast to the two narrow peaks seen in the other three known high-energy gamma-ray pulsars. The emission mechanism in all cases is probably the same, the differences arising from the geometry of the magnetic and rotation axes and the line of sight. Gamma-ray emission accounts for as much as 1 percent of the total neutron star spindown energy in these pulsars, much more than emerges at optical or radio frequencies. Thus, study of this emission is important in understanding pulsar emission and evolution.

Beschreibung: The properties and evolution of the major outburst experienced by Comet Halley at 14 AU during February-March 1991 are studied. It is found that the observed halo is a segment of a conical surface populated by solid particles ejected from a localized, temporarily activated region on the sunlit hemisphere of the spinning nucleus. The total mass of the ejecta was at least 10 exp 12 g and CO was probably the prime driver, accelerating the smallest grains to a terminal velocity of about 45 m/s. The mass loading of the gas flow by particulate matter is enormous, with the mass production rate exceeding the expected production rate of CO by a factor of several tens.

Beschreibung: A detailed abundance analysis of Cr, Fe, Mn, Ca, and Ti in the Ap star 53 Cam from IUE high-resolution spectra has been performed. It is found that UV lines give significantly lower abundance than visible lines for Cr and Fe. Theoretical spectra of Cr II line calculated with the stratified chromium abundance distributions predicted a priori by the diffusion-mass loss model match well both visible and UV lines. The spectral shape of the Ca II K line and its variation are well accounted for by the diffusion model with mass loss. A spectrum synthesis with a stratified abundance well reproduces the observations. These findings provide convincing evidence for stratification in the photosphere of 53 Cam.

Beschreibung: A model for the IR emission and extinction properties of small dust particles is used here to compute the IR emissions in the IRAS photometric bands for a set of isolated, spherical, and nonhomogeneous clouds heated by the local interstellar radiation field. It is predicted that the IR limb brightening (LB) in the IRAS photometric bands caused by selective absorption of UV photons of different energies in the cloud generally happens for central extinctions over 4 mag at 12 microns and greater than 10 mag at 100 microns and intermediate extinctions for the other IRAS bands. The surface brightness in the four IRAS bands is limited to about 0.4, 0.6, 3, and 10 MJy/sr at 12, 25, 60, and 100 microns respectively when no strong density discontinuity is present at the cloud edge.

Maps of burning and topographic position were significantly associated with variation in GVI, biomass, and Bowen ratio. The stratified design did not significantly alter the estimated site-wide means for surface climate parameters but accounted for between 25 and 45 percent of the sample variance depending on the variable.

Beschreibung: During the intensive field campaigns of the First International Satellite Land Surface Climatology Project (ISLSCP) Field Experiment (FIFE) in May-October of 1987, several nearly simultaneous measurements were made with low-altitude flights of the L-band radiometer and C- and X-band scatterometers over two transects in the Konza Prairie Natural Research Area, some 8 km south of Manhattan, Kansas. These measurements showed that although the scatterometers were sensitive to soil moisture variations in most regions under the flight path, the L-band radiometer lost most of its sensitivity in regions unburned for many years. The correlation coefficient derived from the regression between the radar backscattering coefficient and the soil moisture was found to improve with the increase in antenna incidence angle. This is attributed to a steeper falloff of the backscattering coefficient as a function of local incidence at angles near nadir than at angles greater than 30 deg.

Beschreibung: We explore the implications of the IR-radio correlation in star-forming galaxies, using a simple physical model constrained by the constant global ratio q of IR to radio emission and by the radial falloff of this ratio in disks of galaxies. The modeling takes into account the diffusion, radiative decay, and escape of cosmic-ray electrons responsible for the synchrotron emission, and the full range of optical depths to dust-heating photons. We introduce two assumptions: that dust-heating photons and radio-emitting cosmic-ray electrons are created in constant proportion to each other as part of the star formation activity, and that gas and magnetic field are well coupled locally, expressed as B proportional to n exp beta, with beta between 1/3 and 2/3. We conclude that disk galaxies would maintain the observed constant ratio q under these assumptions if the disk scale height h(0) and the escape scale length l(esc) for cosmic-ray electrons followed a relation of the form l(esc) proportional to h(0) exp 1/2; the IR-to-radio ratio will then depend very weakly on interstellar density, and, therefore, on magnetic field strength or mean optical depth.

Excellent ground reference information and a fine-resolution DEM allowed precise assessment of the applicability of the methods under investigation. The results of the study presented here demonstrate the weakness of the classical cosine correction method for radiometric correction in rugged terrain. The statistical, Minnaert and C-correction approaches, however, yielded an improvement of the forest classification and an impressive reduction of the visual topography effect.

Beschreibung: Development of a first-order radiative transfer model for predicting backscatter from tree canopies has been underway at the University of Michigan Radiation Laboratory for some time. This model is known as the Michigan Microwave Canopy Scattering (MIMICS) model. This article presents the second-generation MIMICS model (MIMICS II) which accounts for canopies with discontinuous (open) crown layer geometries. MIMICS II models open crown layers by treating the location, size, and shape of the individual tree crowns as random variables. The backscattering coefficients for the canopy are then determined by introducing statistics derived from these parameters into the radiative transfer solution. Application of the radiative transfer equations to the discontinuous canopy geometry is presented. The resulting model is a robust fully polarimetric solution that is applicable over a wide variety of canopy architectures. Model simulations are compared to results generated with the continuous canopy model. The effect of the open crown geometry is found to be most significant at shallow incidence angles and at high frequencies for trees with well-developed crowns. Under these conditions, the gaps in the crown layer give rise to a notable increase in crown layer transmissivity which allows the radar to see through to the lower layers of the canopy more easily, thereby directly affecting the backscatter contribution of the trunks and ground.

Beschreibung: It is proposed that H2O masers in star-forming regions occur early in the expansion of thin shells swept up by high-velocity winds from young massive stars. In W49N, confinement of the shell by a density distribution with an axial cavity can explain both the velocity field and the shape of the mass distribution. A modified version of the thin-shell code of Mac Low and McCray (1988), including radiation cooling, is used to model dynamically the expanding shell.

Beschreibung: Experimental studies are performed on some coniferous trees (Austrian pine, Nordmann spruce, and Norway spruce) to investigate the relation between the tree architecture and radar signal at X-band. For a single tree, the RCS is measured as a function of the scatterer location at 90 deg incidence. It is found that the main scatterers are the leafy branches and the difference between sigma(vv) and sigma(hh) is significant at the upper portion of the tree. At the lower portion of the tree, sigma(vv) and sigma(hh) have almost the same level. For a group of trees the angular trends of sigma(vv) and sigma(hh) are measured. It is found that the levels of sigma(vv) and sigma(hh) are of the same order, but their angular trends vary from one tree species to the other depending on the tree species structure. The interpretation of these experimental results is carried out with the help of a theoretical model which accounts for the structure of the tree. According to this theoretical study, the major scattering trend is due to the leaves, while the perturbation to the angular trend and the level difference between sigma(vv) and sigma(hh) are due to the branch orientation distributions (i.e., the tree architecture).

Beschreibung: I discuss the most recent model of inflation. In first-order inflation the inflationary epoch is associated with a first-order phase transition, with the most likely candidate being GUT symmetry breaking. The transition from the false-vacuum inflationary phase to the true-vacuum radiation-dominated phase proceeds through the nucleation and percolation of true-vacuum bubbles. The first successful and simplest model of first-order inflation, extended inflation, is discussed in some detail: evolution of the cosmic-scale factor, reheating, density perturbations, and the production of gravitational waves both from quantum fluctuations and bubble collisions. Particular attention is paid to the most critical issue in any model of first-order inflation: the requirements on the nucleation rate to ensure a graceful transition from the inflationary phase to the radiation-dominated phase.

Beschreibung: Observations of the IMF carried out from October 1990 to February 1992 during the in-ecliptic phase of the Ulysses mission are presented. The observations were made between 1 and 5.4 AU during a different phase of the solar cycle from previous missions. The large-scale reorganization of the solar coronal fields following the maximum in Solar Cycle 22 generated numerous transient events, causing large-scale disturbances in interplanetary space, particularly during the first half of 1991. From about the middle of 1991, solar activity apparently decreased, resulting in fewer transient events, allowing the formation of corotating interaction regions (CIRs) recurring in successive solar rotations. Observations of the IMF reflect this temporal evolution in solar activity. However, the average orientation of the IMF, the observed sector structure, and the evolution of the CIRs show that the dynamic interaction of transient events with evolving stream-stream structures in this heliocentric distance range results in significant deviations from the expected IMF topology, even when signature of the transients is less apparent.

Beschreibung: The direction angle sensitivity of agricultural field backscatter is studied. The direction angle is defined as the angle between the incident plane and the perpendicular to the row direction. Maximum backscatter power from an angricultural field is expected to occur when the furrow induced slopes are oriented towards the radar, i.e., for a 0 deg direction angle. This effect is known as the cardinal effect. Because of the way the looks are formed in the NASA/JPL airborne synthetic aperture radar (AIRSAR) processor, each look corresponds to a slightly different squint angle. This provides a unique data set to analyze the cardinal effect, as it allows simultaneous observations of the backscatter of a field for sixteen different direction angles. The backscatter variations of the agricultural fields with direction angle at P-, L-, and C-bands is described. The observed variations in backscatter are compared with model predictions. The model predicts that the maximum backscatter occurs for a 0 deg direction angle, but underestimates the backscatter variations with direction angle by more than 10 dB.

By modifying the operating procedure of this two antenna interferometer, a technique has been developed to enable interferometric measurements to be made simultaneously at two different baselines. The availability of such data allows measurement of the decorrelation process of the ocean in greater detail. The coherence time of the ocean surface can be measured at high resolution over large areas. In addition to the L-band interferometer, a C-band along-track interferometer has been developed. It allows C-band dual-baseline measurements to be made simultaneous with the L-band measurements. The dual-baseline technique and AIRSAR implementation are described, and some example data are presented.

A new class of vegetation indices, or 'minus specular' vegetation indices, is defined to account for the effects of specularly reflected light. The purpose of the joint field campaign was to observe and exchange methodologies with Russian scientists with regard to the development of remote sensing techniques for the early detection and assessment of forest decline damage believed to be associated with atmospheric deposition and/or insect and disease infestations. Several types of passive and active remote sensing measurements were made in conjunction with biophysical measurements on vegetative samples collected from four study sites representing a strong elevational gradient. Relatively cloud-free SPOT data were also acquired over the study area. Moderate canopy damage was recorded at the mid-elevation site (3400 ft/1037 m). The lowest levels of damage were recorded at the lowest elevation site (2300 ft/701 m.) At all sites, east versus west flagging of the canopy was noted (i.e., full canopy on the west-facing side of the canopy, significantly less foliage on the east-facing side).

Beschreibung: Earth photography from the Space Shuttle is used to examine the ice cover on Lake Baikal and correlate the patterns of weakened and melting ice with known hydrothermal areas in the Siberian lake. Particular zones of melted and broken ice may be surface expressions of elevated heat flow in Lake Baikal. The possibility is explored that hydrothermal vents can introduce local convective upwelling and disrupt a stable water column to the extent that the melt zones which are observed in the lake's ice cover are produced. A heat flow map and photographs of the lake are overlaid to compare specific areas of thinned or broken ice with the hot spots. The regions of known hydrothermal activity and high heat flow correlate extremely well with circular regions of thinned ice, and zones of broken and recrystallized ice. Local and regional climate data and other sources of warm water, such as river inlets, are considered.

Land surface structure is characterized at increasing length scales by considering three basic landscape elements: (1) partial to complete canopies of herbaceous vegetation; (2) sparse obstacles (e.g., shrubs and trees); and (3) local relief. Measured parameters of land surface geometry are combined to obtain an effective aerodynamic roughness length which parameterizes the total atmosphere-land surface stress.

Beschreibung: An iterative parallel region growing (IPRG) algorithm previously developed by Tilton (1989) produces hierarchical segmentations of images from finer to coarser resolution. An ideal segmentation does not always correspond to one single iteration but to several different ones, each one producing the 'best' result for a separate part of the image. With the goal of finding this ideal segmentation, the results of the IPRG algorithm are refined by utilizing some additional information, such as edge features, and by interpreting the tree of hierarchical regions.

Beschreibung: Radar backscatter measurements over the Konza Prairie were obtained by means of C- and X-band scatterometers as a part of the first ISLSCP Field Experiment (FIFE) to determine soil moisture. Nearly simultaneous radar and radiometer data sets were collected along two transects that coincided with direct soil-moisture measurements. The results show that radars can be used for soil-moisture estimation over the complete transect, whereas radiometer sensitivity to soil moisture is drastically reduced over regions left unburned for many years. A combined rough-surface/volume scatter model was formulated. Calculated and measured scattering data are compared to determine the sensitivity of the scattering coefficient to different surface treatments.

Beschreibung: The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data processing algorithm used by the Alaska SAR Facility (ASF) for the European Space Agency's first Remote-Sensing Satellite (E-ERS-1) SAR data are examined. Preprocessing highlights two features: signal measurement, which includes signal-to-noise ratio, replica measurement, and noise measurement; and Doppler measurement, which includes clutter lock and autofocus. The custom pipeline architecture performs the main processing with controls at the input interface, range correlator, corner-turn memory, azimuth correlator, and multi-look memory. The control software employs a flexible control scheme. The Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) format encapsulates the ASF products. System performance for SAR image processing of E-ERS-1 data is reviewed.

It is shown that such perturbations arise entirely from the gravitomagnetic components of the local metric which exist because of the relative motion of the sun with respect to the Earth. In the case of general relativity, the net perturbation has an amplitude of 3 cm for the lunar range.

Beschreibung: Two approaches to accelerating the method of complete linearization for calculating NLTE model stellar atmospheres are suggested. The first one, the so-called Kantorovich variant of the Newton-Raphson method, consists of keeping the Jacobi matrix of the system fixed, which allows us to calculate the costly matrix inversions only a few times and then keep them fixed during the subsequent computations. The second method is an application of the Ng acceleration. Both methods are extremely easy to implement with any model atmosphere code based on complete linearization. It is demonstrated that both methods, and especially their combination, yield a rapidly and globally convergent algorithm, which takes 2 to 5 times less computer time, depending on the model at hand and the required accuracy, than the ordinary complete linearization. Generally, the time gain is more significant for more complicated models. The methods were tested for a broad range of atmospheric parameters, and in all cases they exhibited similar behavior. Ng acceleration applied on the Kantorovich variant thus offers a significant improvement of the standard complete-linearization method, and may now be used for calculating relatively involved NLTE model stellar atmospheres.

Beschreibung: We have constructed high resolution IRAS maps of the B209 star forming region in the Taurus complex. By combining survey scans with pointed observations using advanced techniques specially developed to handle IRAS data in crowded fields, we have constructed images that reveal two new premain-sequence (PMS) objects. One of these, IRAS 04114+2757G, has FIR colors close to those of typical T Tauri stars and is probably associated with a faint stellar object visible on the POSS prints. The other new PMS source, IRAS 04111+2800G, is a deeply embedded object not detected at 12 microns and not optically visible. The object is projected close to the center of an ammonia core. Our detection of compact blue and red shifted (C-12)O emission peaks around the position of IRAS 04111+2800G confirms the PMS nature and youth of this object. We have examined the reasons for the exclusion of IRAS 04111+2800G and IRAS 04114+2757G from the IRAS Point Source Catalog and estimated the incompleteness of the currently known sample of embedded PMS stars in Taurus. The implications for the determination of evolutionary time scales in low mass star formation are discussed.

Beschreibung: The Giotto spacecraft carried two different instruments - the JPA and the IMS - for the observation of hot ions in the coma of P/Halley. Although there are many similarities in the time and distance profiles of the plasma flow parameters (bulk velocity, number density, and temperature) computed from the two data sets, there are also some significant differences, especially at cometocentric distances less than 500,000 km. The principal discrepancies between the JPA results presented by Formisano et al. (1990) and the IMS observations are: (1) the IMS did not detect the levelling off of the speed and temperature profiles that Formisano et al. interpreted as flow stabilization; (2) the IMS detected differential north-south flow between the solar wind and cometary ions for only a brief interval when the magnetic field was oriented nearly southward, whereas Formisano et al. reported more extensive differential north-south flow that was independent of the direction of the field; (3) the JPA ion densities were factors of 2 to 4 higher than the IMS ion densities which, in turn, were an order of magnitude greater than theoretical values.

Beschreibung: We present new theoretical calculations for the red wing of the Lyman-alpha profile. Close collisions with neutral and ionized hydrogen lead to the formation of the pseudomolecules H-H and H-H(+) with the appearance of satellite features near 1600 and 1400 A. The calculations include multiperturber effects, which are responsible for the formation of H3 and H3 with features near 1950 and 2600 A. The theoretical absorption profiles are included in stellar atmosphere codes and used to predict synthetic spectra for DA white dwarfs of intermediate temperatures (20,000 to 8000 K). These new calculations offer a unique opportunity to determine accurate effective temperatures and surface gravities for the variable ZZ Ceti stars.

Beschreibung: The paper discusses the occurrence and properties of disks around young stars, emphasizing in particular how these may relate to planet formation and the evolution of the solar system. The global properties of such disks often resemble those attributed to the primitive solar nebula, suggesting that conditions appropriate for planet formation commonly accompany the birth of low-mass stars. Disk masses, between 0.001 and 1 solar mass, are generally lower than those of the stars, and may represent only a fraction (less than about 10 percent) of the total system mass. From the paucity of near-IR radiation from some disks it is inferred that the inner regions there are gaps where the opacity from small particles becomes vanishingly small. Evidence is presented to the effect that gaps in the inner disks develop preferentially in the oldest objects, suggesting that, with time, matter is lost or accumulates into large particles such as planetesimals, which cannot yet be detected.

Beschreibung: Theoretical results predicting yields of various isotopes in nova outbursts are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on the stardust and gas-phase chemical anomalies that may be contributed to the Galactic ISM by classic novae. It is concluded that most of the heavy isotope anomalies are produced by about 25 percent of novae that occur in systems containing massive O-Ne-Mg white dwarfs. The dust-production scenario for novae is summarized, and it is argued that explosions on O-Ne-Mg white dwarfs may lead to the formation of dust grains that carry the Ne-E and Mg-26 anomalies. Quantitative constraints are placed on the degree to which classical novae participate in the production of chemical anomalies, both in the primitive solar system and on a Galactic scale.

Beschreibung: We present new observations of the H-alpha line profile for five main-sequence A-type stars, where very high SNRs were achieved. A search for weak asymmetries was carried out to detect a stellar wind, but the many telluric absorption lines in this range prevent us from taking the full benefit of the high SNRs. This situation was improved by modeling the telluric absorptions to remove them from the observed spectra, but the H-alpha profiles were nevertheless found to be quite symmetric. We calculated the profile of the H-alpha line for a grid of model atmospheres of an A-type star including a weak wind, in order to assess an upper limit on the mass loss rate. The asymmetry is found to be sensitive to the velocity law and to the turbulent velocity of the wind, but its first moment depends much less on them. The upper limits deduced on the mass loss rate are between 1 and 2 x 10 exp -10 solar mass/yr. An improvement up to a factor 10 could be anticipated if new observations could be secured from a much drier location, achieving similar SNRs.

Beschreibung: The LBV characteristics of the new LBV candidate WRA 751 suggested by Hu et al. (1990) are studied in greater detail. A comparison is made with observational characteristics of the well-known LBVs Ag Car and HR Car using photometric and spectroscopic data of Hu et al. supplemented with an IUE spectrum and direct CCD images in H-alpha, blue, and red. It is found that the spectra of WRA 751 and HR Car discussed in this paper are similar to the minimum-phase spectrum of AG Car and therefore resemble the Of/WN 9 spectral type. The characteristics of the optical, near- and far-UV (IUE) spectra of the Fe II spectrum in these wavelength regions is due to continuum fluorescence. The H, He I, Fe II and forbidden Fe II emission lines are formed in different parts of the stars' envelopes, corresponding to their expanding velocities. It is concluded that WRA 751 has properties which fit well the LBV properties at minimum-brightness phase, and possesses circumstellar material with observational properties similar to those of the known LBVs AG Car and HR Car.

About 150 instruments, most of which are remotely operated, have been installed at the field site to monitor ground atmospheric conditions, precipitation, interception, soil-water status, and energy flux. This paper describes the nature of the field experiment, instrumentation and sampling rationale, and presents preliminary findings.

Beschreibung: We have detected forbidden O I 63 micron and forbidden Si II 35 micron emission from the oxygen-rich, M2 lab supergiant, Alpha Orionis (Betelgeuse). The forbidden O I line flux is 2.4 +/- 0.2 x 10 exp -18 W/sq cm, and the forbidden Si II line flux is 0.9 +/- 0.4 x 10 exp -18 W/sq cm. These fluxes are consistent with the thermal model of Rodgers and Glassgold (1991), which indicates that the emission arises in dense, warm gas in Alpha Ori's inner envelope and implies that nearly all of the available O and Si is in atomic form. This is the first reported detection of FIR, fine-structure emission from the inner or transition region of a circumstellar envelope, where molecules and dust are expected to form.

Beschreibung: Simple and easy to implement elementary function approximations are introduced to the spectral window functions needed in calculations of model predictions of the cosmic microwave backgrond (CMB) anisotropy. These approximations allow the investigator to obtain model delta T/T predictions in terms of single integrals over the power spectrum of cosmological perturbations and to avoid the necessity of performing the additional integrations. The high accuracy of these approximations is demonstrated here for the CDM theory-based calculations of the expected delta T/T signal in several experiments searching for the CMB anisotropy.

This is in keeping with the emission bands' generation by a mixture of variously sized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) whose smallest species have been dehydrogenated in the vicinity of SVS 3. Beschreibung: Hydrodynamic pulsation models are matched with observations of globular cluster RRc stars to derive masses, luminosities and temperatures as functions of two observables: pulsation period, P1, and Fourier phase parameter, phi sub 31. We find that mean RRc masses and luminosities increase, and mean temperatures fall, with decreasing cluster metallicity. The Oosterhoff dichotomy is explained as mainly a temperature effect, while hints of a new dichotomy (in RRc mass and luminosity) are found among certain Oo II clusters. A provisional RR Lyrae distance scale emerges for the RRc stars in the form of a relation between luminosity and the two observables, P1 and phi sub 31. Finally, the scheme we propose passes three independent tests: (1) it reproduces the observed hierarchy of relative luminosity among a large sample of RRc stars in Omega Centauri; (2) it yields mean RRc masses which are fully consistent with the RRd masses derived for the clusters M68 and M15; and (3) it gives an LMC distance modulus in agreement with that obtained by other methods.

Beschreibung: The slope of a gamma-ray burst spectrum determines how the burst flux decreases as the cosmological redshift z increases. This provides a test for the presence of a cosmological redshift in a sample of gamma-ray bursts. Many bursts have spectra characterized by a frequency-dependent power-law index, so a burst subset can be created by requiring that each subset member have a power-law index of the given value at a low frequency and an index of a different given value at a high frequency. If all bursts in this subset are at z much less than 0.1, then the flux at low frequency will change proportionally with the flux at high frequency. If, however, z greater than 0.1 for most bursts, then the linear dependence of the high-frequency flux on the low-frequency flux disappears at the flux characterizing the spatial cutoff in the log N-log C(max)/C(min) diagram. This signature of the cosmological redshift generally persists when gamma-ray bursts are given a broad distribution of intrinsic fluxes and spectral shapes. The characteristics that a burst distribution must have to mask the cosmological redshift are discussed. The limitations of this test are observational, arising primarily from errors in measuring the photon flux and in determining the spectral index of the burst spectrum.

Several analyses were performed illustrating the utility of the AVIRIS over a dark water scene. Image-derived chlorophyll concentration compared extremely well with that measured with bottle samples. A bathymetry map of the shallow parts of the lake was constructed which compares favorably with published lake soundings.

Beschreibung: The synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) emission model for gamma-ray bursts is capable of producing narrow line features for a variety of modelled field strengths, primary electron injection distributions and burst luminosities. Multiple resonant scattering with synchrotron continuum photons efficiently traps and cools pairs in the ground state to an average energy where the Compton energy loss rate is zero. Annihilation between pairs in these cooled distributions can be very efficient. For isotropic injection of primary electrons, there is an anti-correlation of the intensity of the angular-binned emission between the portions of the continuum spectrum below the cyclotron peak and above the annihilation line feature. Small-angle emission dominates the continuum above the annihilation line feature and is smooth through the line up to the pair production cut-off, which can be above several MeV for small enough angles. The angle-averaged annihilation line is made of components which can have peak emission centered at energies away from 511 keV, due to Doppler shifting. For beamed injection, the annihilation line breaks up into relatively narrow components in the angular emission, which sum into a broad feature in the angle-averaged emission.

Beschreibung: The effects of external heating on the stability of hot accretion disks are studied in some detail. It is known that geometrically thin, optically thick, nonirradiated accretion disks have two distinct branches in the surface density mass-accretion rate plane: the upper branch is radiation pressure-dominated and is unstable against thermal and secular perturbations, while the lower one is gas-pressure-dominated and is stable. We show quite generally that, even when disks are strongly irradiated, the upper branch remains unstable and the lower branch remains stable; the lower branch, however, can become radiation pressure dominated, if the irradiating flux, F(irr), is kept constant. A stable, radiation pressure dominated state thus appears. If F(irr) changes in proportion to the mass-accretion rate through the disk, the instabilities associated with radiation pressure dominated disks cannot be removed. Some observational implications are discussed in the context of long-term variations of low-mass X-ray binaries.

Beschreibung: Inflation is found to naturally provide mechanisms for the direct generation of cosmic turbulence on the same scales as those on which density perturbations are formed. Since the observational constraints on turbulence could translate into constraints on inflation itself, these results call for a reexamination of the issue of cosmic turbulence. It is found that by the end of inflation, the amplitude of the generated turbulent velocity has been suppressed by a factor approximately greater than 10 exp 100. Inflation therefore assures the absence of turbulence on scales of galaxies and clusters of galaxies. In addition, it is shown that the density fluctuations generated by inflation can excite longitudinal turbulence after they reenter the Hubble radius at later cosmic epochs.

Beschreibung: Remotely sensed optical and microwave data can be synergistically used to infer land surface properties. Optical data can be used to estimate surface albedo, radiation absorption by vegetation canopies and their photosynthetic efficiencies. Vegetation canopy reflectance at red and near-infrared wavelengths can be used to correct for vegetation effect on microwave emissivities at low frequencies for estimating soil moisture. Optical data can also provide information about surface and air temperatures, precipitable water vapor, cloud top temperature and its water content. This information can be utilized to correct microwave data for atmospheric effects. These points are illustrated with theoretical analyses and by application to satellite data. The basic physical mechanisms operative at the various wavelengths are also discussed.

Beschreibung: Quantitative use of remote multispectral measurements to study and map land surface evapotranspiration has been a challenging issue for the past 20 years. Past work is reviewed against process physics. A simple two-layer combination-type model is used which is applicable to both vegetation and bare soil. The theoretic analysis is done to show which land surface properties are implicitly defined by such evaporation models and to assess whether they are measurable as a matter of principle. Conceptual implications of the spatial correlation of land surface properties, as observed by means of remote multispectral measurements, are illustrated with results of work done in arid zones. A normalization of spatial variability of land surface evaporation is proposed by defining a location-dependent potential evaporation and surface temperature range. Examples of the application of remote based estimates of evaporation to hydrological modeling studies in Egypt and Argentina are presented.

Beschreibung: Important problems are discussed concerning the effects of shock geometry on the injection of thermal particles and the process of standard Fermi particle acceleration in general. In pursuit of a self-consistent model that simultaneously describes shock structure and particle acceleration in shocks of arbitrary obliquity, a Monte Carlo simulation developed for parallel shocks is generalized to address oblique geometries. Attention is given to initial results concerning the ways in which injection and acceleration efficiency varies with obliquity and Mach number.

Beschreibung: The paper examines the (C-12)/(C-13) isotope ratio in the solar neighborhood on the basis of observations of the (C-12)(O-18) and (C-13)(O-18) J = 1-0 transitions in four interstellar clouds located within 500 pc. The (C-12)/(C-13) ratio in these sources ranges from 57 to 74, and its weighted average is 62 +/- 4, with thermal noise and line formation uncertainties contributing about equally to the probable error. These values indicate moderate chemical evolution in the local star neighborhood since the formation of the solar system, in good agreement with model prediction of the current carbon ratio in the local interstellar medium.

Beschreibung: Decorrelation of the radar signals with time, which is indicative of changes in the surface occurring during the period of time spanned by the images, is examined. It is concluded that the decorrelation effects due to thermal noise can be easily evaluated and removed, while those due to slight angular changes between flight tracks are negligible. Spatial baseline and rotation-induced decorrelation can be derived using the Fourier transform of the impulse response intensity, and increases linearly with baseline or rotation in an ideal system. Empirical results confirm that as the baseline increases, the overall correlation decreases due to spatial baseline noise.

Beschreibung: The general properties of the high energy AGN continuum are reviewed with particular emphasis on the connection between radio loud and radio quiet AGN in the broad context of the dynamics of accretion onto a black hole. Arguments are provided indicating the possibility that the emission from radio loud AGN originates at distances much larger than a few Schwarzschild radii from the black hole and hence the role of pairs in defining the observed spectrum is limited. A connection is made between the radio and high energy continuum of AGN.

Beschreibung: It has been suggested that gamma-ray burst light curves may consist of many superposed flares with a duration shorter than 30/microsec. If true, the implications for the interpretation of burst data are enormous. With the launch of the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory, four predictions of Mitrofanov's (1989) suggestion can be tested. Our results which contradict this suggestion are (1) the photon arrival times are not correlated between independent detectors, (2) the spectral hardness and intensity does not depend on the detector area, (3) the bursts seen by detectors which measure photon positions do not see microsecond flares, and (4) burst positions deduced from detectors with different projected areas are close to the positions deduced from time-of-flight differences between separated spacecraft. We conclude, therefore, that gamma-ray bursts are not composed of microsecond flares.

Continuum light curves, and a multi-epoch line analysis are presented. In addition, a single epoch optical-UV spectra obtained with the HST/FOS is discussed. The optical-UV continuum fits approximately the 'canonical' fv varies as V exp 1/3 power low expected for thermal emission from steady state accretion disk. The emission line spectrum contains prominent high ionization lines of C IV and N V. Weaker lines are seen at intermittent epochs, including some of lower ionization. The derivation of galactic reddening which has significant implications for distance estimates is discussed. Comparisons with previous SXT sources are considered.

Beschreibung: Recent observations of the Galactic center region indicate the presence of a narrow gamma-ray line feature at 170 keV, and theoretical speculations suggest it may result from Compton backscattering of the 511 keV annihilation radiation. The high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometer on HEAO 3 observed the Galactic center in the fall of 1979 and in the spring of 1980. In view of the recent developments, the HEAO data were re-examined to search for this new feature and to look for possible correlations with the 511 keV line emisison. No evidence for such Compton backscattered radiation was found and the derived upper limits for emission in a line feature near 170 keV were well below previously reported fluxes, indicating possible time variability.

We calculate gamma-ray emission via bremsstrahlung and inverse Compton scattering by propagating an unbroken electron power law injection spectrum and employing a Galactic emmissivity model derived from COSB observations. To maintain the low energy electron population capable of producing the observed continuum via bremsstrahlung, a total power input of 4 x 10 exp 41 erg/s is required. This exceeds the total power supplied to the nuclear cosmic rays by about an order of magnitude.

Beschreibung: The study reports observations of positron annihilation radiation from the inner region of the Galaxy which show that there are two components of the radiation: a steady, diffuse Galactic component and a variable component from discrete, presumably compact sources. The existence of the variable component is supported by the ensemble of all narrow FOV 511 keV line observations, including recent detections with OSSE. The fit of this ensemble to a time-independent source distribution can be excluded at the approximately 3-sigma level. The same ensemble, combined with the broad FOV SMM observations of Galactic 511 keV line emission, sets constraints on the Galactic distribution of the diffuse component.

Beschreibung: An overview of the early results of EGRET, one of four instruments carried on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, is presented with regard to observations of pulsars, bursts, galactic diffuse radiation, and active galaxies. The June 11, 1992 solar flare was observed in gamma rays with energies from the threshold of detection to energies over 1 GeV. Detailed time histories and energy spectra were obtained for the Crab and Vela pulsars, with one of the Vela pulses being quite sharp, approximately 2 percent of the total period. Several gamma-ray bursts were recorded. The one on May 3, 1991 was seen in EGRET's spark chamber system, which made it possible to determine a position. The quasars 3C 279, which has a redshift of 0.538, was seen in high energy gamma rays in both June and October 1992.

Beschreibung: We present a detailed spectral and temporal analysis of a long ROSAT PSPC pointing centered on the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548. The spectrum is particularly complex, with a two-component model favored, confirming the existence of the soft excess in this source. In addition, an absorption feature arising from highly ionized oxygen in the line of sight has been detected, consistent with an origin in the 'warm absorber' which has been found to be a common feature in Seyfert galaxies observed by Ginga. The energy and depth of the feature should allow us to constrain the density and geometry of the absorbing gas, which may lie close to the central continuum source. NGC 5548 was in a low X-ray state during the observation, brightening by a factor of about 2 on a time-scale of about 2 d. Time-resolved spectral analysis shows a change in the ratio of the hard and soft fluxes, consistent with reprocessing models.
